is Korkie like obi wan’s son is that fanon whats the lore behind Korkie 👀
OH BAYLARDO, MY DEAR, YOU'RE GONNA LOVE THIS ONE.
Korkie is Duchess Satine Kryze's nephew in the Clone Wars show that shows up in a handful of episodes. It's been implied in the show that Satine probably raised Korkie/was VERY involved in his upbringing. He is a teenager (probably about 15-17???) And does some heartfelt sleuthing with his school buddies and also saves Satine a couple times. Cute lil buddy.
This is him:
The very popular fanon for Korkie is that he is actually Satine and Obi-Wan's son because:
- Bo Katan is the only canon sibling of Satine we know of and she is too young to be Korkie's mom.
- Satine and Obi-Wan fell in love and spent a year on the run together before The Phantom Menace, and the timeline matches up for Korkie to have been born shortly after that year (ie Satine found out she was pregnant right after Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon would have left Mandalore to return to their usual Jedi duties on Coruscant).
- Korkie has a very similar facial structure to Obi-Wan and hair. He also has a lot of similar mannerisms and (not to get too Red String here), there are some shots of him in the show that parallel some shots and movements of Obi-Wan in a way that makes the ole associative brain go brrrrrrrrr.
- The writers/showrunners have implied on a few occasions that their original intention was for Korkie to be a secret Obi/Satine love child and they have never denied that in canon. The actors that voice Obi-Wan and Satine on the show seem to also be pretty in-favor of the theory and make a lot of comments and jokes about it too.
- Rumor has it there were discussions of making Rey a Kenobi via a Satine/Obi-Wan child and the logical conclusion would be that they were probably looking at Korkie to be her father.
The assumption is that Satine never told Obi-Wan (since he was ready to leave the order for her anyway) and so Obi-Wan has no idea he has a kid. Satine would have hidden the pregnancy and then presented Korkie as her infant nephew or, perhaps, as a Foundling she was adopting as a nephew.
I like this theory because there are some DELICIOUS political ramifications for Satine (Mandalorians hating Jedi and her being a young leader of a new government of a world recovering from a long and bloody civil war that almost wiped their whole population out), as well as character stuff with her deciding to hide Korkie's parentage and raising him on her own as her nephew. Also the whole Satine and Obi-Wan thing where they have a duty to each of their peoples and the conflict between the people they belong to that causes them to part ways is VERY TASTY and then the two of them coming back together during a war to be very Divorced But Still In Love is just my favorite thing. Piling a secret love child on top of all that just adds a LAYER I really enjoy hehehe.
#CONGRATS BAYLEY YOU JUST UNLOCKED MY FAVORITE OLD HYPERFIXATION#OLD FAITHFUL#IF YOU WILL#Anyway this is very canon to me#TBH I forget it isn't actually canon canon sometimes#its so tasty#spawns some very angsty and delicious fanfics#This theory has been eating at my brain for like 8 years its practically a fine vintage at this point#but yeah Satine hiding Korkie away and doing everything to protect him but also kinda wishing Obi-Wan was there to see their son#but also knowing that Obi-Wan has his duties and she has hers and large portion of the galaxy will literally fall apart without them#MMMMMMM HEHEHEHEHE

22, 30, 15, , 2 - worm
17, 23, 1, 8- candelle
24,18,19,31- ophie
— 𝕤𝕝𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕝𝕪 𝕠𝕓𝕤𝕔𝕦𝕣𝕖 𝕕𝕟𝕕 𝕔𝕙𝕒𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕖𝕣 𝕢𝕦𝕖𝕤𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤 — (i’m a million years late answering this bc of school and also bc of anxiety abt my characters again :’) sorry
— 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕨𝕠𝕠𝕕 . aka loud leopard-dragonkin lesbian
2.) do they consider themselves an optimist? Pessimist? Realist? What are they like in actuality? Wormwood likes to consider herself an optimist, at least out loud. She often finds herself torn amongst her party members and, despite her chaotic disposition, in effort to maintain peace when things go awry. (It’s rare, but it does happen.) That means that whatever strife they’re facing, she wants to be the one to grin as widely as she can and tell them it’s nothing they can’t handle - and so far, it hasn’t been! Inside, Wormwood is much more reflective. She had to leave her partner behind for months, and as much as she liked to tell herself it couldn’t possibly damage their bond, the realistic part of Wormwood knows that most people don’t handle being separated for months at a time very well. She’s willing to admit that of her own relationship, but if someone like Beloved worried about the same thing, Wormwood would perish that thought as quickly as she could. (I ACTUALLY ALREADY ANSWERED 3 OF THESE FOR WORM HERE so i’m just gonna link back to em dfjhsdfsdh) — 𝕔𝕒𝕟𝕕𝕖𝕝𝕝𝕖 . aka sad sad tears of a clown 1.) What does your character typically keep in their pockets? Candelle doesn’t keep anything extraordinary in her pockets. (She also doesn’t have much pocket space to begin with.) She tries to keep things like spare change and a pair of scissors, needle, and thread on her (for emergent sewing reasons) at all times, but she does usually wind up with the occasional wrapped candies. The only unnecessary things she keeps with her are pink rouge and a deck of oracle cards. 8.) What is something they cannot resist? Donuts. Candelle’s favourite food growing up was donuts - she favoured jelly-filled with sprinkles, and her mother would always let her have one when she was playing particularly well in their practice sessions. They remind Candelle of happy times with her mother, when she was little and her biggest worries in life were making friends with any new performers and whether or not a sprained ankle would heal in time for their next show. Since joining the Zhentarim, Candelle finds them very rarely. They were made by a woman who lived with the circus when she was a child, and in Waterdeep she hasn’t found any that are particularly the same as the ones she had. 17.) Does your character swear? What's their favorite phrase/word? No, Candelle doesn’t really swear - and if she does, it’s done so subconsciously that she wouldn’t remember she said it. It’s not really on principal, either, she just tries hard to be very gentle-handed with her words, and to her, swearing would not help get her point across. 23.) Would your character want to be famous? Why or why not? Probably not. Candelle doesn’t really think much about herself as a performer anymore. When she was little, she wanted to be a famous performer and have people come from all over to see her. She wanted to be so spectacular that she transformed into a fairy and people would be in awe of her dance and performance that they would go home feeling magical. Since then, the veil of innocence has been lifted substantially from her eyes. She won’t readily admit this to anyone, but Candelle doesn’t really know if there’s such a thing as providing pure joy. There are fleeting feelings, but they’re just illusions. That isn’t what she wants to put into the world. She never wants her actions to be a temporary bandage, and so fame and all of it’s sparkling lights has lost a lot of its gilding for her. Candelle actually isn’t sure what she would do once she’s completed her goals. She prefers not to try and think about it, because she doesn’t want to distract herself from her resolution. — 𝕠𝕡𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕚𝕒 . aka series of unfortunate events in a 30 yr old woman who is legally only 3 18.) How does your character act when they want to seem inviting? Ophelia is pretty unassuming as a person overall. She’s very tiny, and her face is rather sad; there’s nothing innately intimidating about her. She doesn’t have to do a lot to convince people to lower their guard around her, but she seems to be quite awkward when she thinks she’s being comforting. (In fact, the record number of children she has made cry on accident in this campaign is kind of insane.) If she was going out of her way to try and be welcoming, she might not know where to begin because she doesn’t think she’s “unwelcoming” to begin with. Forcing a smile is probably awkward. Putting her hair back makes her self-conscious. If it was a desperate thing, then perhaps she could sink into another false facade like Bethany, the cheerful and stab-happy gang recruit, but she does hate to quit being Ophelia. Maybe put her knives away? Offer tea? She just doesn’t know. 19.) How does your character act when they want to seem threatening? A threatening Ophelia is somewhat easier. Her eldritch inclination, missing arm, and collection of suspicious vials of liquid is usually enough to rattle nerves for strangers. (Despite her charisma, Ophelia is never the party member who should do the talking.) If she wanted to strike fear in the hearts of others, then peeling off her face to reveal a new one, summoning tentacles from the dark void, or smiling seems to do the trick for her.
24.) What's a controversial food opinion they would have? Ophelia hates bacon. It’s the absolute worst thing you can give her. She’s eaten it on very few, rare occasions, because it was all they had or Hakem was kind enough to make breakfast, but she would rather scrape her teeth on a blackboard or stab herself in the eyes with needles than eat bacon. It’s greasy, it smells rotten, and it’s worse than her hatred for salt-cured or jerkied meats. 31.) Can your character visualize actual concepts in their head? Or are they just vague thoughts? Ophelia can visualize concepts, but she cannot convert them into understandable descriptions or images. For instance, the theory of music having a shape association is something Ophelia actually can envision, where a triangle appears at a crescendo or a squiggle accentuates a held note. However, she could not begin to draw this, nor could she even explain why she can envision such a thing. It may be a side-effect of the synthetic brain.

I hate what school does to people. God, I hate it so bad, it destroys the love of learning that anyone ever had.
I adore writing. I adore history, I adore science, I'm a nerd through and through. I failed or barely got a C in every English class I ever took until last year. I failed writing assignments left and right. History has almost completely lost its luster for me because of school, I wrote like, a ten page essay on Harriet Tubman when I was like 10 for fun, and now I deflate at having to learn anything in history, because it's not fun and exciting anymore, it's bland and boring and tedious and repetitive. Until last year, I hadn't enjoyed a science class for real since elementary school. Where were the experiments? Where was the the dissection that I had been told was in high school science? It was read and perform this experiment that had no practical work. Here's this really interesting theory, instead of testing it in a fun way, how about we chew gum instead?
And it's not just me. I was talking to W tonight and we picked him up from his house to go to the movies, and he's a war buff! He teases me about knowing most every fact about the revolutionary war like the back of my hand and getting a little too passionate when I talk about it, but he knows more about the world wars than I could ever imagine knowing. He finds our history classes boring as all hell, and idiotic. And he's not wrong, you can't study for a test if all of your notes have been collected by the teacher. He reads quickly and religiously, he's read several long ass books in a single day because he just eats that shit up. He's failed every English class he's taken in high school. And that's disgusting. He's the kind of nerd that should be thriving in school, but he's not even sure if he's going to graduate. I'm still ahead in school, I'm overcompensating by a lot, I'm most definitely graduating, but it's cruel to know that school has fuck all to do with learning, and all to do with control.
W has ISS for two days next week because the librarian hates him. That's bullshit. He's the kid she should love, he used to go to the library at lunch every day, he reads so so much, he should be teachers pet, but he isn't. Guess who is? Me. I go there so so rarely. I go when my class field trips over for the day, I go when I have to run errands as TA, and that's pretty much it. I lost my love of reading because of school, so I avoid it like the plague. Books I've had to read in school were so rarely good, so often deemed classic just because they're old, that the idea of reading "good" books, made me queasy. If old man and the sea is a "good" book, no books are actually good. My reading level is high as fuck, I'm able to read AND write at a college graduate level, but that wasn't enjoyable. Back when I was like 8 and reading at the level of someone twice my age, I refused to read things that weren't from the children's section. I read magic tree house and Junie b Jones and the rainbow magic series. I refused to read Harry Potter. It was long and scary and my school had us reading long scary books that were even smaller. I still haven't finished the fourth book, I can't sit through it all, it's just too damn long, I lose interest.
I have audible, and my parents and I have books we listen to together, it makes the reward of paying attention better, because then I can rant about that one part I loved, or the part that pissed me off. We can get really excited when a book we just read is getting a sequel. You can't imagine the joy me and my dad felt when we found out the sequel to neverwhere was released the month before we had finished the book. The elatedness all three of us felt when we found out Andrea Vernon and the corporation for ultra human protection got a second book. Before we got this like last year, I think the last time I read for pleasure was... Probably when I was ten. So eight years ago. And it's so dumb!!! The last time I had read a new book that hadn't ever been introduced to me before that I enjoyed reading in class one hundred percent, every word, was Fahrenheit 451 in 8th grade, that wasn't even allowed by the school. If I included rereads it would be Beowulf last year, but I read it in 7th grade originally.
I don't hate a man for all seasons, or Jane Eyre, I quite enjoy them honestly, but it's not because of the book alone. The community part of it was what made it fun. Plays are meant to be performed, and not read, so we all played parts in class. Jane Eyre is really fun to bitch about, especially in a class of 13 women. Why is she letting him treat her like that, why does she like this about him, honestly she should kill this prick, etc etc. I knows so much about this time period and yet I can't help my modern brain kicking and telling me to forget the time period and just get angry at the characters, but I'm engaged, I'm excited, I'm getting passionate and heated in an argument about it, I'm invested, and that means Bronte did her job.
I enjoy books. I enjoy absorbing the contents of books, but the act of sitting still, often times alone, with a book and reading makes me forget violently. I lose my train of thought, I get distracted, I lose interest because the engaging parts are only so common in the books, it won't be high action all the time, and once it isn't I'm bored. It's a bad habit of mine, it's why I don't really read. I get upset that my parents haven't read Jane Eyre because I want to talk about it, and I can't. I hate that with shows and movies too, I hate having this cool reference that would perfectly fit in this conversation, but nobody knowing what I'm talking about.
This has gone a little off on a tangent, but god, I hate school, because I used to be like W and devour books rapid speed, and now I can't stand to read most of the books I have bought because the act of reading makes me uncomfy. I hate school because I should love my government class, I want to be a lawyer, a good portion of the class talks about the revolution, and instead I nap and bitch about the teacher because it made such a cool subject boring.

Complimentary Practices for Yogasanas
There is much to be said for the practices outside of yogasanas that support & enrich the practice we have on the mat.
During my time at Atmavikasa my teachers have gradually introduced us to ‘complimentary practices’ which can all combined deepen our practice, allow for detox (Physical, Mentally & Emotionally), give reverence to the traditional Hatha yoga system & philosophies, and last but not least further our spiritual work.
They can give you the energy to reflect upon yourself. Build the good intentions from the inside - easier with high energy( Water, Fruits/Veg, Barefoot Walking, Chanting, Pranayama, Meditation, Philosophy & Sungazing).
The most simple yet effective practices are given first:
Drinking Water
4 Litres of water minimum per day is needed for our bodies to function properly.
2 Litres per day (1 litre at a time, 2 separate times)
First one in morning after Asana, Pranayama & Kriya Practice
Second litre drank after mediation/class late afternoon 5:30pm
Temperature preferably room temperature/warm water allows your body to maintain homeostasis, optimally flushing out toxins and replenishing the cells.
We drink at once continuously to:
Rehydrate: After seven or eight hours of sleep, your body becomes dehydrated. Drinking water upon waking helps increase the flow of oxygen, and aids in the production of muscle and blood cells.
Jumpstart your metabolism: Drinking water in the morning can boost your body’s metabolism by about 24%, which can aid in maintaining a healthy weight.
Flush out your toxins: When you drink water in the morning before eating, you help to purify your colon, allowing nutrients to be absorbed more easily. Your kidneys also function better when you’re getting enough fluids.
Energise your brain: When you’re dehydrated, your brain is operating on low fuel. This can cause you to feel tired, drained, may lead to headaches, and you may even experience mood fluctuations.
Prevents & cures diseases: While you sleep your body repairs itself, replenishes energy and balances hormones. The result is toxins and other waste materials being released and waiting to be flushed out.
Be mindful that drinking water is one thing, however absorption & retaining is another.
Depending on nutrition & lifestyle factors, will govern the % of the water you drink that is being absorbed.
Salt intake, sugar, stress, coffee which will excite your nerves will have a connection to absorption. Along with your sleep regularity/patterns and of course the amount of toxins that you have in your body.
When you are constipated, this will not allow you to absorb the water.
Ironically the main cause of constipation is dehydration.
Drinking water when you wake up will not only cure dehydration but it will help relieve constipation, help to keep you regular and promote a morning bowel movement.
To check levels of dehydration, firstly you can watch the dryness of the mouth, if your lips are dry then you need more water. Also your urine if not clear/odourless it means you need more water to not only hydrate your body and cells but also to help your organs detoxify the waste you are holding onto.
Fruits and Vegetables
So here we come to the key aspect of healing, removing the impurities of the mind & deep connection to your true nature, which of course will allow much space for a pure practice.
Its a huge topic, massive industry, everybody has ‘the diet’ or ’the nutritional answer’ etc, so sometimes it can be difficult knowing what information to trust & how to discern.
It can be difficult to jump transition into a raw diet, so it must be taken slowly.
My teacher described the analogy that if you put a child into a room, with all different types of food, it will go for the natural food like fruits & vegetables that you can eat straight away without cooking/processed foods etc.
My teacher has recommended to read books/works by Dr T.C Fry & Herbert M. Shelton who champion the ideas of the Natural Hygiene health system. Would be worth having a look at for further research
(https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/natural-hygiene)
youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm14UgVrFNo
Our digestive systems have got so conditioned to cooked food, let along sugary, spicy & salty foods.
With each food there will be 3 elements stored in the body: gross, middle and subtle elements. The gross will become manifested in our body to excrement, the middle part is transformed into flesh, and the subtlest part goes to form the mind.
So it would be fair to say (but perhaps not verifiable other than from direct experience itself which requires discipline) that certain foods carry specific energies that will affect your body on all of these 3 levels.
Almost like a code or vibrational frequency that has been inbuilt from the cosmic intelligence contained with each matter. Reading on the Yoga Sutras & other Yogic philosophies will help cement these ideas on mind, matter & energy.
“When the food is pure, the mind becomes pure. When the mind becomes pure, memory becomes firm. And, when a man is in possession of firm memory, all the bonds which tie him down to the world are loosed.” Swami Budhananda
Our systems are not used to the prana that comes in from Yogasanas (Mediation, Pranayama, and all other complimentary practices). Sometimes are unable to handle the nerve energy that comes in, unless your body & mind knows how to handle this energy then there will be wastage along with misdirection of prana spent. So the importance is clearly there that we need foods that can keep the prana balanced & stabilised.
Prana = the energy that flows in the nerves. Comes out both as physical + mental energy.
Work from a policy of inclusion & exclusion; gradually start noticing the differences in your mind fluctuations, nerve energy, calmness & physical effects on the body.
My teachers greatly approve of Bananas - this fruit will give you great nutritional benefits along with sufficient calories for fruit, but furthermore to this it will disturb you the least out of all the foods(your mind & body).
Here is a blog that I written on the wonder of bananas, please feel free to read further here:

Sungazing
The Science of Staring at the Sun - The sun is the bringer of life to all existence on this planet.
The theory is that the sun is the force of all life, and staring at it can infuse the body with large amounts of energy.
Our ancestors understood the relation between the sun and health. From the Aztecs to the ancient Egyptians, many past societies revered sungazing as an esoteric practice for high-ranking priests and shamans.
Here are important instructions for sungazing that must be followed strictly.
Timing: For beginners 5-10 minutes per day. In 2-3 months of daily practice, you can increase to 15 minutes
Types:
Active - Directly looking at the sun
Passive - Face to sun (eyes closed) feeling 3rd eye.
Conditions
Well Hydrated
Barefoot ( Grounded - Circuit complete)
2 hours after sunrise in the morning / 2 hours before sunset early evening.
10-30 seconds look directly at the sun
Stand on the mud - then you can go for barefoot
Benefits for sungazing
Nerves get more strength
Helps with hormonal issues
Improves digestion
Biggest Anti-Depressant (Boosts production of melatonin & serotonin)
Rise in energy levels
Increased the actual size of the pineal gland
Not all bodies can absorb the same way, it depends upon the condition of your nerves.
Side related issue - B12
Non- absorption of vitamins (+B12) into the blood, if you don’t get enough sun.
Increase your gut health - to increase also absorption of vitamin B12. We produce it inside our gut - Organic Veggies can help with this if you eat unwashed due to bacteria present in soil.
Also eating with hands ( Indian traditional method), and growing your own herbs / veg at home.
Hira Ratan Manekun(more commonly known as HRM) is a true sungazer and brought it to our Western world. He has founded the Solar Healing centers, and website.
http://solarhealing.com
He is a man who lives off of the energy that the sun provides and water only.
(Sometimes HRM will have tea, coffee or buttermilk for social purposes)
Here is a trailer to a documentary “Eat the sun” where HRM features & discusses his experience with sungazing.
youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM9iDdkKZ7M
In his own words, HRM states that the sun can be used to heal the mind, body and spirit. He also claims that as a result of sun gazing you will have better physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
HRM has gone through three strict long term fasts and during those he was under the supervision and observation of various medical and scientific teams.
Personal Experiences
I have been drinking 4 litres of water per day now for 8 weeks, physically my skin is really clear, I have less appetite than I had previously ( I was dehydrated before). My body feels much lighter & fresher. It’s hard to describe exactly the feeling other than I feel good, fresh and that I can actually feel my body is being cleaned out from past toxins.
I have experienced a deep detox which initially started in the first 2 weeks as physical digestive detox. Some unexplainable things have been happening for example, never ending diahorrea despite fasting with the old rotten meat coming out of my intestines ( that’s what the smell was like anyway - putrid !) it’s key to note that I haven’t eaten meat for over 12 years now. All sorts of junk that has been stored in my intestines for years.
Next was the emotional detox / neurological / psychological (it’s still in process - I must have a lot of karma to resolve) which has been continuing now for 3-4 weeks. I can say since I have never detoxed in this way before, it’s hard to understand what is going on & why; the deeper spiritual reasons behind it. I know in the long run its worth it, to purify & clear out all the impurities of the body & mind once & for all.
To be able stop & remove any future disease from manifesting surely seems like a small temporary pain/discomfort price to pay. I’ll be completely transparent in saying that it really is not easy. Thank you to my Acharya for all her support, energy & guidance.
Aligning your body with nature - instinct.

Political, response to the meme
*squinting* ok I'll dive in
There are definitely more more 2 genders. When we consider the two binary genders, we see a lot of what defines the others as well and the reasons for previous binary gender norms make sense from a historical perspective, but have fallen apart under modern scientific scrutiny. When we talk about gender, many people will simplify it based on genitalia alone, but it is possible to be born with both sexual organs or neither or to be born with one which is not capable of reproduction. Add in the fact that hormones typically correlated with masculine and feminine genders (testosterone and estrogen) can have any appear at varying levels to someone regardless of their gender expression. Also, the X and Y chromosomes only differ slightly. It is extremely common for a male presenting individual to have 2 X chromosomes, or for a female presenting individual to have an XY chromosomal makeup. Studies have also been done showing consistently that transsexuals individuals have brain scans more similar to their identifying gender than that of their birth assigned gender. In short, there are more than 2 binary genders, and what we think we know about those genders is quickly changing.
Abortion is absolutely justified, but since individual human suffering doesn't appear to have effected your opinion of the matter, consider what was written in a favorite book of mine Freakonomics. Abortion makes sense from a societal perspective. As many of you will be more aware than I, there was a massive and violet crime wave in the 80's. Then it kind of stopped, after abortion was made legal. Extreme poverty, addiction, mental illness, and other conditions strongly linked with criminality are also the kinds of things that may lead a woman to decide to have an abortion. In short, if those kids had continued being born when criminal conduct was predictable, we would've just seen a continuation of that psychopathic violence. You may say to me, that child deserves the right to live regardless of the possibility of a criminal future. You might say that those predictions make no moral guidance to the life that has been made. To that I tell you that without a neurological system, it isn't a life. The first Heartbeat identified is an electrical impulse with no self awareness whatsoever. If you believe life begins at conception, please consider the possibility of twins. The twins begin as one clump of cells, then divide into two when only one was conceived at first. Do we now have one soul divided in two? What about cases where one twin consumes the other in the womb? Soul math is hard, and not at all rooted in fact. The fact is that medical issues and huge financial commitments and other major factors make planning a family a difficult decision, and those decisions are not made easier by you, the government, or anybody else telling those involved what to do.
Guns don't kill people by themselves, that's true. And yet the US is one of the only countries in the world where the ownership of a gun is considered an unalienable right, beyond that of the sense of security of those around you. Other countries require complex permits, huge annual taxes and fees, ongoing education, and proof of responsible ownership practices. If you calm down for just a second, you may notice that with each violent outburst, ie, school shootings, these same points get brought up again and again and yet somehow no gun rights activists are willing to look at how that specific shooter got that specific gun. Background checks aren't going to hurt you, but they might save some 3rd graders. Being a registered gun owner isn't going to endanger your family anymore than a vehicle registration has resulted in your car being stolen, but it will help to trace and identify how violent offenders are getting their weapons. It may surprise you to know that countries with stricter gun laws don't have as much gun violence as we do, but they really really don't. They're not free of it, but its less enough that we deserve to have a conversation about what gun rights limitations people are open to. We owe it to our kids. The fact schools have been closed and we haven't had a bunch of school shootings this year has been amazing. Now let's see what else we can do to keep it going. Illegal immigrants aren't illegal.
Most illegal immigrants were here legally originally, for example, overstaying a legal passport visit. The road to legal immigration is very difficult and can span decades. The legal process is arduous, and unless you have a lawyer and a strong grasp of the English language, it is designed to leave a lot of people behind. Its expensive, technical, inherently racist, and confusing. If we all want safe borders AND a melting pot then we need to reform that antiquated and unnecessary process. If you witness, or are the victim of a crime, you should be able to go to the police without fear of deportation. You should be able to go to the hospital without worrying the doctor will tell the cops you're here illegally. You should be able to live here within the law without worrying ICE is going to tear your family apart. Any perceived injustice over skipping the legal immigrants process is far outshadowed by the global crime of separating families. It is considered an act of genocide, and it is abhorrent.
Obamacare isn't perfect, but it has improved on what was there. When we talk about access to medical care, you need to look at it through the lense of social justice. If there is anything about you that an employer might judge you for (race, color, gender, orientation, religion, etc) then you've currently got a harder time getting medical insurance because our insurance system is so strongly linked with employment. Healthcare should be considered a right. I might be great at taking my meds and going to the doctor regularly, but if others in my community don't have the ability to see the doctor, they will he less able to fight off infection which will require me to see those professionals more often. Similarly, WEAR YOUR MASKS. Obamacare isn't that, but it is a step toward that obvious and necessary conclusion.
Higher taxes for the wealthy are absolutely a good thing. While we're here squabbling over how to pay for childcare or major surgery, billionaires are off buying yachts and multiple homes and stocks which don't feed back into our communities. Mass hoarding of wealth is a part of why we can't afford the social welfare services we need to maintain dignifies for the whole of the US. Seriously, if you made $5,000 a day since the day Christopher Columbus landed in the America's, you STILL wouldn't have one billion dollars. There is NO REASON one person would need that much money. And yet people are willing to shoot each other over dollar amounts less than $100 to feed themselves. Those taxes could go toward food banks or infrastructural improvements that sustain our communities and create jobs to create alternatives to the harshest existences we see today. The wealthy need to pay their share. Amazon, Walmart, and fast food companies pay their employees the minimum, causing those employees to draw on social welfare programs. Those companies should be paying living wages and the taxes our country need to thrive. We're being highway robbed, and instead of blaming others competing for your jobs or the social changes libs are asking for, why not look at the people who make it impossible for us ALL to thrive? I'm not saying eat the rich, I would never SAY that. But for real, what good does it do all of us to have one multimillionaire in our country? What good does it do the planet to have a lot of them? Their jets ruin our ecosystems. Their wealth is obtained by exploiting vulnerable populations and low paid workers. The laws we all abide by don't apply to those extremely wealthy because the law doesn't have the capacity to prosecute them effectively.
If you make less than $400k a year, you won't be effected at all by Biden's tax plan. The funds you make in excess of $400k will be the only funds effected. That means that if you make $450k, only that $50k will be taxed at the higher bracket rate than the bulk of your income.
Tax the wealthy, and let's get some bridges and stuff please?
Disrespecting the anthem isn't nearly as offensive as telling people how to protest. Ours is the only country with a national anthem at every sporting event. We sound crazy to people from other countries. The fact is that Colin Kaepernick was trying to highlight some real grievances with real, known, and simple solutions. The 8 Can't Wait project highlights those steps much better than I ever could. The fact is that a moment of silent kneeling brought about a movement, and that our country has been persecuting people of color for centuries. Google Critical Race Theory for more here. Other forms of protest have been similarly denied their due, and so here we are. We saw the protests in our cities. We've seen the video of George Floyd getting murdered over a $20 bill. We've heard all about Breonna Taylor. We've been completely ignoring the concerns Colin Kaepernick and others were trying to tell you about and it matters. Black Lives Matter more than your anthem, your flag, or any sport ever will. You aren't supposed to be pledging allegiances to a flag, the land, the law, or any one president, you're pledging allegiances to a people indivisible and regardless of race or religion or anything else. Until you can honor that pledge, your words are as meaningless as the contents of my toilet.
Not understanding the science of climate change is not an argument against it. It's complex, but not insurmountable. It's more than just where trash goes, it's also things like the large change in the gas types in our atmosphere since the industrial age began. It's also the way chemicals keep ruining our water supplies. It's also the way that the global sea level is rising, the temperature of our earth is increasing. It's the way that weather is becoming more extreme. It's the way that the evidence of these facts, and their causes, are all extremely well documented. These are all proven fact which are no longer denied by any reputable scientist today. The steps needed vary from simple to difficult, but they're necessary, and they'll stimulate our economy beyond what we can imagine today. The projects required to redo what our grandparents built will be enormous, and they'll require upkeep. Upkeep that will improve the lives of those working those positions.

SunGazing
Published July 12, 2019 | By shirleytwofeathers
SunGazing was a popular practice in ancient times. Mayans, ancient Egyptians, Indians and many other ancient cultures strongly believed in the power of Sun. They believed that it could heal diseases, put an end the need of food, and even make telepathy a real possibility.
The practice of SunGazing closely resembles its name. At sunrise and/or sunset, when the sun is closest to the earth, SunGazers stand barefoot on the earth and look directly at the sun for 10 seconds. Every day, 10 seconds are added and some SunGazers eventually reach a duration of 44 minutes.
The theory is that the sun is the force of all life, and staring at it can infuse the body with large amounts of energy. So much so that, Hira Ratan Manek, one of the SunGazers featured in the documentary, Eat the Sun, claims to have gone eight years without eating. He has been “eating” a steady diet of solar rays, and claims that this is all he needs for nourishment.
It may sound like a myth, but some scientists, have acknowledged the power of SunGazing. Nikola Tesla once talked about these super human abilities. He said,
‘My idea is that the development of life must lead to forms of existence that will be possible without nourishment and which will not be shackled by consequent limitations. Why should a living being not be able to obtain all the energy it needs for the performance of its life functions from the environment, instead of through consumption of food, and transforming, by a complicated process, the energy of chemical combinations into life-sustaining energy?’
Our ancestors understood the relation between the sun and health. From the Aztecs to the ancient Egyptians, many past societies revered SunGazing as an esoteric practice for high-ranking priests and shamans. Today, it is experiencing a resurgence in popularity and SunGazers claim it has its benefits.
The benefits of the practice are said to be as follows:
It activates our pineal gland and boosts production of melatonin and serotonin which are also called feel-good hormones. The hormones are also supposed to be the reason behind the increased energy level.
It is known to stimulate the growth of pineal gland. Generally pineal glands shrink with age, but with SunGazing, the result is otherwise.
SunGazing provides nutrition to both mind and body which provides for our energy requirement. Hence, human can get rid of the need to eat food which promotes weight loss in a healthy way.
Sungazing is an interesting practice that touches the spiritual and psychological realms, which are very personal things. Everyone is wired a little differently and this practice isn’t for everyone, nor is it something I recommend. If you choose to partake, do your own research, be careful, be cautious, and document your experience.
Important Disclaimer:
The human eye is very sensitive, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can lead to solar retinopathy, pterygium, cataracts, and often blindness. Studies have shown that even when viewing a solar eclipse the eye can still be exposed to harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation.
SunGazing With Your Eyes Closed
The practice of SunGazing with your eyes closed is actually more powerful than SunGazing with your eyes open and can be done safely all day long. With them closed, the visible light spectrum is blocked but the other than visible light spectrum penetrates the cranium – x-rays, gamma rays, microwaves etc.
The after image which is present when you SunGaze or stare at a candle or light source, is actually the biophotons in your head illuminating. Biophotons are very healing – that is why they discredit that after image and refer to it like it is a mirage, and just to be ignored.
The biophotons react to other than visible light – the light that penetrates the cranium when your eyes are closed and you look at the sun. Biophotons will expand and fill the entire cranium and then the whole body, as you focus on the inner Light, that Light becomes more coherent.
The coherent light is a more potent healer than anything else we have on earth. Illness and disease cannot exist inside a coherent energy field. There are 13 different LIGHTS inside the head – corresponding to Jesus and the 12 disciples – these are the Light frequencies required to cleanse and purify the Pranic body – the 2nd body up – not to be confused with the aura – to accomplish ascension – the Jesus thing.
But Wait, There’s More!
I found another article about SunGazing that I thought was interesting and worth a look if this interests you. The article was written by Stasia Bliss for The Guardian Express (guardianlv.com):
NASA Confirms -Super Human Abilities Gained Through Sungazing
Ever wanted to be in more than one place at a time? That’s right, I’m talking about the super-human abilities that can be gained by those who follow the protocol for what’s known as sun-gazing, a valid practice recently confirmed by NASA.
Many proponents of this ancient technique, used by many cultures such as Mayan, Egyptian, Aztec, Tibetan and Indian yoga, report not only healing benefits to common illnesses, but obtaining super-human abilities such as advanced telepathy and going completely without the need for food.
Another Disclaimer: Do not engage in sungazing practices without proper training and medical supervision. Permanent eye injury and blindness may occur. Do not attempt to change your diet and live on sunlight or water alone. Before attempting any radical spiritual or dietary practice, seek qualified medical advice and spiritual supervision.
What is Sun Gazing?
Sun gazing (also known as sun-eating) is a strict practice of gradually introducing sunlight into your eyes at the lowest ultraviolet-index times of day – sunrise and sunset. Those who teach the practice say there are several rules to the practice. First, it must be done within the hour after sunrise or before sunset to avoid damaging the eyes. It is important to only look at the sun when it is orange or red according to the ancients. Looking at the sun when it is yellow or white, or uncomfortable in any way is not recommended.
Second, you must be barefoot, in contact with the actual earth – sand, dirt or mud; and finally, you must begin with only 10 seconds the first day, increasing by 10 second intervals each day you practice. Following these rules make the practice safe, says sources.
Nikolai Dolgoruky of the Ukraine calls himself a ‘sun-eater’. He has been practising sun gazing for the past 12 years and has largely subsisted off solar energy since he began. Others have reported losing the need for food after only 9 months of sun gazing (by which time the practitioner has worked up to a maximum of 44 minutes).
After 9 months of practice, you need only walk barefoot on the earth for 45 minutes per day, 6 days in a row to further the process of what has been initiated by sun gazing.
Sun-gazing is a practice also called the HRM phenomenom, coined as such after Hira Ratan Manek, the man who submitted himself to NASA for scientific testing to confirm that he does indeed possess the almost ‘super-human’ ability of not eating, gained through his dedication to this interesting marvel.
Funded by NASA, a team of medical doctors at the University of Pennsylvania observed Hira 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 100 days. NASA confirmed that he was indeed able to survive largely on light with occasionally a small amount of buttermilk or water during this time.
What happens to the body during Sun Gazing?
During your first 3 months of practice, the suns energy is moving through the eyes and charging the hypothalamus tract, says those who have studied this technique and used it. This Science/Medical Team wanted to observe and examine his retina, pineal gland and brain, therefore this observation team was led by Dr. Andrew B. Newberg, a leading authority on the brain and also featured in the recent movie “What the Bleep Do We Know”, and by Dr. George C. Brenard, the leading authority on the pineal gland.
Initial results found that the grey cells in HRM’s brain are regenerating. 700 photographs have been taken where the neurons were reported to be active and not dying. Furthermore, the pineal gland was expanding and not shrinking which is typically what happens after mid fifties and its maximum average size is about 6 x 6 mm, however for HRM, it has been measured to be at 8 x 11 mm. The hypothalamus tract is the pathway to the rear of the retina which leads to the brain.
The brain then, over time, becomes activated by the energy supply being received by the sun. You will first experience a relief of mental tension and worry, since most worry is fuelled by the energy received by the foods we eat. Since food gets it’s energy from the sun, it is said to be readily available to sun-eaters without the trouble of digestion. Though hunger is said to eventually cease, it is fine to continue eating regularly during initial stages, until appetite disappears naturally.
Another benefit early on is said to be an increase in confidence and an ability to easily solve your problems, as you are without tension. Everyone has at least a bit of psychosis, but during the first few months of sun gazing practice, it is reported that these attitudes go away and a positive nature gracefully replaces the old persona full of fears.
By the end of 3 months, the gazing time will have increased to 15 minutes per day.
Reports on sun gazing say that the bad qualities normally associated with any person will gradually disappear and good qualities will remain, explaining that ‘bad qualities’ only develop in the absence of sunlight. Bad qualities like anger, fear, jealousy, lust – are said to disappear – and be replaced by a certain confidence and ‘spiritual knowing’ that senses more purely the heart of an issue.
At 3-6 months of gazing, the studies show that physical diseases start to disappear.
They say that by the time one is gazing 30 minutes per day (building up 10 seconds per day) all the colours of the sun will have reached the brain. Color therapists attribute their healing of certain diseases to flooding the body and brain with the particular colour that is lacking – depending on the ailment.
For example, in liver disease, the colour green is deficient. The kidneys need red, and the heart, yellow. All of the organs and all of the systems are said to respond to different colours of the rainbow, which is why it is also recommended to eat a diet rich in a variety of colours. It is recommended during the 3-4 month period that you use autosuggestion to see your body already healed of any perceived weakness or disease.
This action will facilitate the process of returning to wholeness.
As you continue the process, it is reported that after 6 months, the energy stored from the technique is no longer being used for repairing the body or the mind and can move now into supporting you in gaining more super-human abilities.
How can we take in sunlight?
How can the body take in sunlight in such a manner as to sustain life? Is it possible that some of our dormant “junk” DNA may become active and allow us to utilise Solar Energetic Factors in the same way that plants do? Let us examine a possible method.
There is a pathway from the retina, to the hypothalamus, called the retino-hypothalamic tract. This brings information about the dark &light cycles to supra-chiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus. From the SCN, impulses along the nerve travel via the pineal nerve (Sympathetic nervous system) to the pineal gland. These impulses inhibit the production of melatonin. When these impulses stop (at night or in dark, when the light no longer stimulates the hypothalamus) pineal inhibition ceases, and melatonin is released. The pineal gland is therefore a photosensitive organ and an important timekeeper for the human body.
The unexplored process of energy absorption, transformation, and processing from the Sun may occur here. The activation of pineal gland is a key step in psychic, spiritual and energy transformation processes. Suffice it to say that in this gland, energy processing and distribution can take place. The pineal gland is the subtle controller of all endocrine glands, therefore controlling the endocrine system. Through secretion of melatonin, it also regulates the circadian rhythm, sleep wake cycle and it also slows down ageing process. It has psychic properties and it is said to be the seat of soul or mind.
Sunlight may enter the eyes and be directly stored in the pineal gland. Pineal activation and charging through solar energy could be a vital step in higher evolution. Once activated and charged by the Pineal gland, Solar Energetic factors may be transformed into electrical, magnetic or chemical energies in body. Once processed, this energy must be transported & must be stored somewhere. If the initial processing of this energy starts in the pineal gland, how does it get to the rest of the body?
What’s Beyond Healing?
By seven and a half months of gazing, now at 35 minutes, need and desire for food is dwindling. According to sun gazing experts, food is not actually needed to maintain the body, only energy – and ‘sun-eating’ provides that energy. By 9 months, all taste for food, including aroma, all hunger pains and cravings disappear. Those who make it this far say that they report a noticeable ’change’ in the way their brain feels – like it’s “charged up.” After 9 months of sun-gazing – reaching a maximum of 44 minutes – it is advised that you give up sun-gazing and redirect your attention now to the Earth.
For 6 days straight, one is to walk barefoot on the earth, 45 minutes per day.
During this barefoot walking, the pineal gland is said to become activated. Professional sun gazers and those researching the science say that each toe is connected to a specific gland, and by walking barefoot on the Earth, you activate these glands. The big toe is thought to be aligned with the pineal gland, the second toe with the pituitary, then the hypothalamus, thalamus and finally the pinky toe correlates to the amygdala. Walking barefoot, with the sun now falling on the top of your head, practitioners claim to create a sort of magnetic field in and around your body that recharges you and your brain.
Apparently this walking barefoot part is the most important aspect of the practice. As you continue walking on the Earth, this is when the magic really begins. The pineal gland is activated more and more by this walking procedure. Intellect is said to increase, along with memory. The pineal gland has navigational and psychic capabilities, meaning telepathy, the possibility of flight… now we are getting somewhere! Have you ever thought you would like to have your body in more than one place at a time? Well, sun-gazing is said to be the magical key to such abilities.
If you can barefoot walk 45 minutes every day for a year – you are golden. At that point, only a maintenance of 3-4 days a week is necessary to maintain the capabilities you have acquired.
Are there any dangers?
Doctors and eye care professionals caution against looking directly at the sun, saying that it will damage the retina. However, if done correctly, sun-gazing at the correct times of day, sunrise and sunset, studies show there is no risk of damaging the eyes.
Those who have been sun gazing for many years have had their eyes checked to show no damage, though it is advised that you have your eyes checked in the first few weeks of your practice, so you can know for yourself.
To sum it all up…
Remember, it’s 10 seconds the first day, at sunrise or sunset, adding 10 seconds per day each day there after. After 90 days of accumulative gazing equaling 44 minutes, you cease the gazing and start the barefoot walking 45 minutes per day for 6 days. At this point, I could imagine, hey – if you made it this far, what’s a year of barefoot walking an hour per day to keep it all? You will have to try it out and see for yourself.

Would you rather:
1. Go apple picking V.S. Go on a hayride. (I feel like ‘hayride’ probably means something very specific and obvious that I nonetheless have no idea about due to cultural mismatch.) 2. Scary V.S. Sweet. (Not that you’d know it given how I talk to people I don’t know well, I guess, but I am a high-strung critter with a low tolerance for being freaked out by things.) 3. Sweaters V.S. Boots. (Sweaters are nice in theory, but in practice my hot-blooded self will roast if I’m not wearing something that can be opened up to at least some extent. Not that I wear boots a lot either, but that has more to do with the fact that I only own two pairs, one of which is Swedish-bought winter boots that are overkill for the British weather pretty much all but two days of the year.) 4. Socks V.S. Mittens. (Honestly, I’ve hated wearing both since I was a kid, but I dislike socks slightly less and shoes are often uncomfortable without them.) 5. Bonfires V.S. Football. (Bonfires are warm. Football is either sweaty and nasty if you’re playing it, or freezing cold if you’re still and watching it. Also it’s boring.) 6. Trick or Treating V.S. Watch Scary movies. (My brief education in Spanish involved multiple horror films and I hated every minute of it. People get alarmed when you spend half an hour curled up in your chair with your hands over your ears.) 7. Apple Pie V.S. Pumpkin Pie. (Not that we ever make pumpkin pie in this house. The US takes Hallowe’en seriously, Britain makes an attempt but just doesn’t do it as well, and then there’s my family...) 8. Halloween V.S. Thanksgiving. (Swede living in Britain, so no Thanksgiving, and there isn’t really another autumnal holiday I could think of that would make sense to substitute in.) 9. Bake Pie V.S. Bake Cookies. (I cannot bake but cookies aren’t exactly special enough for me to put the effort in either.) 10. Rain V.S. Fog. (I’ve been woken up by rain a bunch of times in the last week from the storms and it’s nice.) 11. Black Cats V.S. Owls. (I love them both, but you can get closer to black cats.) 12. Ghosts V.S. Wizards. (Ghosts are just very upsetting as a concept. Don’t make me think about mortality too hard please and thank you.) 13. Harry Potter V.S. Halloweentown. (I know what Harry Potter is. Although at the age I read the books, they were... very scary.) 14. Go Hiking V.S. Sleep in. (Going out for a walk makes the rest of my life feel more manageable.) 15. Cinnamon V.S. Nutmeg. (I found a coffee with cinnamon and cardamom in it in Sweden and it was the best thing I’ve tasted all year.) 16. Reading V.S. Writing. (Both is good, but writing makes me feel more productive.) 17. Hot Chocolate V.S. Tea. (In general I’m pretty meh about both - I had the spiced chai tea we serve at work yesterday and could barely taste it until it’d been steeping for nearly 15 minutes - but I drink a fair bit of rooibos to pad out the caffeine.) 18. Live in a Cabin In a Forest V.S. Have it be Fall 24/7. (Forests are nice and cabins are cozy. Seasonwise, I would rather the weather make its mind up than wobble between almost summer and almost winter for months on end.) 19. Candy Apples V.S. Caramel Apples. (While I have no memory of trying either, the concept of candy apples is perplexing me a bit. What does one do to the apple to make it a candy apple?) 20. Blankets V.S. Pillows. (More than one blanket is rarely necessary, in my experience.) 21. Roasted marshmallows V.S. Roasted Chestnuts. (Not that I’ve had roasted chestnuts, but I know I like roasted marshmallows.) 22. Coffee V.S. Apple Cider. (Never tried apple cider, but when the owner of the coffee shop you work at thinks you drink your coffee amusingly strong...) 23. Red Leaves V.S. Orange Leaves. 24. Braids V.S. Bows. (Should have learnt to do braids before I cut half my hair off, I did like the way they looked, but anything beyond bunches was more than my lazy ass could handle.) 25. Scented Candles V.S. The Smell of Fresh Baked Goods. (My kitchen incompetence does bias me somewhat, but I like candles.) 26. Carve Pumpkins V.S. Make Pumpkin Pie. (At least you get something potentially nice out of making the pie? Assuming you like pumpkins. Which I’m not entirely sure I do. I mean, I know I’ll eat the seeds, but that’s all.) 27. Pumpkin Spice Lattes V.S. Chai Tea Lattes. (I’ve tried both exactly once, not being a big fan of lattes, but my memory of the pumpkin spice is ‘this tastes like knock-off gingerbread’ and my memory of chai latte is at least generally positive.) 28. Coats V.S. Oversized Sweaters. (See above about sweaters.) 29. Beanies V.S. Berets. (I’m sure berets are cute and all but have you met winter) 30. Candy Corn V.S. Peanut Butter Cups. (I’ve never had either to the best of my knowledge.) 31. S'mores V.S. Apple Crisp. (I’ve had s’mores a couple times. Sticky, but not unpleasant. Apple crisp is a mystery.) 32. Jump In a Pile of Leaves V.S. Swing on a Tire Swing. (Swings in general hit a point of soothing repetition for me.) 33. Corn Maze V.S. Haunted House. (Getting lost is fine and my dad taught me how to get through mazes. Getting scared constantly is less so.) 34. Bob For Apples V.S. Visit a Pumpkin Patch. (If I’m going to get soaked I would rather it be from rain.) 35. Whipped Cream on Hot Chocolate V.S. Marshmallows on Hot Chocolate. (Dairy and I have a difficult relationship that hot chocolate alone will strain. Although from my coffee shop experience, cream and marshmallows tend to go hand in hand.)
My brain is doing the name bloop thing, but if anyone feels like talking about their opinions on autumnal things, feel free to consider this a vaguetag.

– My Keto, Good-For-Your-Gut Ice Cream I’ve Been Eating Every Night
I love to tinker with new recipes. This week I created a trademark “Gut-Healing Keto Ice Cream.” It’s very simple to make, satisfies evening cravings, and quite frankly, I am a fiend for ice cream or anything ice-cream-like.
Ingredients: – 6 egg yolks – 4 scoops Thorne Mediclear SGS (chocolate flavor) – 8 droppers-full Omica Organics vanilla stevia – 1 teaspoon sea salt – 1 can BPA-Free full-fat coconut milk
Blend on high for 5 minutes. Refrigerate overnight for a “pudding” texture or freeze overnight for an “ice-cream” texture. If freezing, I like to pull it out of the freezer 30-60 minutes before consuming (e.g. before dinner) to soften. For added calories, sprinkle with a chopped-up, frozen Kion Clean Energy Bar and you will be in food nirvana, guaranteed. Enjoy!
– “Healthy” Nicotine Gum I’ve Discovered
I’m a huge fan of nicotine as a cognitive stimulant. As a matter of fact, you can click here to read the top 28 benefits of nicotine (and side effects to be aware of). Problem is, most nicotine gum and sprays are chock full of artificial sweeteners and chemical fillers. Enter Lucy gum: a new formulation of nicotine gum which is an improvement on the texture and taste of existing options like Nicorette. Their flavor chemists developed three signature flavors with very low amounts of artificial nasties – flavors that taste amazing and cover up the harshness of nicotine. Use code: BEN10, and that will give you $10 off a subscription at LucyGum.com! Enjoy, and use responsibly.

The Bountiful Benefits of Bone Broth: a Comprehensive Guide
The Weston A. Price Foundation and advocates of the Paleo and Primal lifestyles favor bone broth for its wide array of nutrients that are difficult to find in any other food source. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride has made bone and meat stock the foundation of the GAPS protocol because of its ability to heal and seal the gut lining and reduce overgrowth of harmful microbes. Chicken broth has also been suggested to reduce the migration of immune cells during illness. These are just some of the many reasons to love bone broth. Bone broth is mentioned in dozens of articles on my blog, but I haven’t really provided a thorough analysis in a single, convenient place for my readers. So here it is: everything you need to know about bone broth! In this research-dense article, I will cover the role of broth in traditional cultures, the nutritive components of bone broth, the numerous health benefits, and the best ways to source it.
Bone broth in traditional cultures
A South American proverb says “good broth will resurrect the dead.” While this is certainly a stretch of the imagination, the ability of broth, and chicken broth in particular, to treat the common cold has long been touted as ancient folk wisdom. Scientists at the University of Nebraska sought to test this folklore in 2000 and found that in vitro (in a Petri dish), some components of chicken soup were able to inhibit the migration of innate immune cells called neutrophils, effectively acting as an anti-inflammatory that could, in theory, reduce symptoms of illness (1). Whether this effect occurs in vivo (in a living organism) is still unclear, but this preliminary data suggests that our ancestors may have been onto something. We’ll explore the bone broth–immune system connection more in a later section. Evidence of the existence of soup can be found as far back as about 20,000 BC (2), and it’s well accepted that broth of some sort was, and remains, a staple in many traditional cultures. In Danish and German culture, large hens were specifically reserved for making soup, and the cooked meat was retained for other dishes or added back to the soup. In East Asian diets, dishes like miso sometimes contain meat stock. In Greece, beaten eggs mixed with lemon are commonly added to chicken broth as a traditional remedy for colds and digestive upset. Chicken soup in Hungary usually included organs like chicken liver and heart, while in Vietnam and the Philippines, beef bone marrow was used as the base for making soup. In India, chicken soup is popularly sold by roadside vendors in the winter and takes on many different forms. Chicken soup was a traditional dish of Jewish kitchens; it has even been called “Jewish penicillin” and is used to treat and prevent illness. In American tradition, chicken soup was prepared using old hens that were too tough to be roasted or cooked but still made excellent soup. Unfortunately, the only soup that most Americans eat today is canned, highly processed, and devoid of nutrients.
This comprehensive resource on bone broth benefits includes all the latest research.
Traditional cultures wisely practiced nose-to-tail eating and consumed all parts of the animal, including the skin, cartilage, tendons, and other gelatinous cuts of meat. This provided a balanced intake of all the amino acids necessary to build and maintain those same structures in the human body. Some anthropologists have even suggested that in some regions of the world, early humans were scavengers rather than hunters, using tools to crack open the bones of carcasses left by lions and other large predators to expose the rich bone marrow (3). Unfortunately, many modern cultures have lost the practice of whole-animal eating, and the old-age tradition of having a pot of broth constantly simmering on the hearth has been lost in favor of modern convenience, microwaves, and highly processed canned soups. Bringing bone broth back into the modern diet offers a simple and delicious means of obtaining the nutrition from parts of the animal that traditional cultures prized.
Bone broth: a nutrient gold mine
Bones contain an abundance of minerals as well as 17 different amino acids, many of which are found in broth as proteins like collagen and gelatin. Though the exact nutritional content varies based on the bones used, cooking time, and cooking method, the following nutrients are consistently found in most bone broths. Collagen With 28 different types, collagen makes up about 30 percent of the protein in your body (4) and is the main component of connective tissues like cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone, and skin. It is also present in the blood vessels, cornea, and lens of the eye. The name collagen comes from the Greek “kólla,” meaning “glue,” and the suffix “-gen,” which means “producing.” In fact, early glue was made from collagen more than 8,000 years ago, likely by boiling the skin and sinews of animals (5). In addition to providing structure, collagen also plays an important role in tissue development and regulation (6, 7). Gelatin When collagen is simmered, it forms gelatin. This hydrolysis of collagen is irreversible and results in the breakdown of long collagen protein fibrils into smaller protein peptides. However, its chemical composition is very similar to its parent molecule, collagen (8). Gelatin is what gives bone broth or stock its Jell-O-like consistency once it has cooled. Glycosaminoglycans Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are complex carbohydrates that participate in many biological processes. They can attach to proteins in order to form proteoglycans, which are integral parts of connective tissue and synovial fluid, the lubricant that surrounds the joint (9). If the connective tissue, such as tendons, ligaments, and cartilage, is still attached, the bones in broth will provide our bodies with the whole spectrum of GAGs, including keratan sulfates, dermatan sulfates, chondroitin sulfates, and hyaluronic acid, which are the raw materials for skin, bone, and cartilage formation. Glycine Glycine is an amino acid that makes up more than a third of collagen. It also acts as a neurotransmitter, binding to glycine receptors present throughout the nervous system and peripheral tissues. Signaling through this receptor is particularly important in mediating inhibitory neurotransmission in the brainstem and spinal cord (10, 11). Proline Proline is an amino acid that makes up about 17 percent of collagen. The addition of hydroxyl groups to proline significantly increases the stability of collagen and is essential to its structure. Though small amounts of proline can be manufactured in the body, evidence shows that adequate dietary proline is necessary to maintain an optimal level of proline in the body (12, 13). Proline is not typically thought of as a neurotransmitter, but it is able to weakly bind to glutamate receptors and glycine receptors (14). Glutamine Glutamine is yet another important amino acid found in bone broth and is the most abundant amino acid in the blood (15). It is one of the few amino acids that can directly cross the blood–brain barrier (16). Intestinal epithelial cells and activated immune cells eagerly consume glutamine for cellular energy (17, 18). Bone marrow Inside the center cavity of the bone is the bone marrow, consisting of two types, red and yellow. Both types contain collagen. Red bone marrow is the site of manufacturing for new immune cells and red blood cells, while yellow marrow consists of healthy fats (19, 20). It is thought that important nutritional and immune support factors might be extracted from marrow during cooking, but the bioavailability of these factors has not been studied. Minerals Bone is also full of minerals, including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and zinc (21). An acidic medium is necessary to extract these minerals from food. When making broth, always add a splash of vinegar or other acid in order to extract the most minerals from the bone.
Bone broth and your health
At this point, I hope you have a solid understanding of the components of bone broth. Now let’s get on to the health benefits! Skin health Skin is composed of two layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis, or upper layer, is composed of keratinocytes and is largely responsible for skin barrier function. Underneath is the dermis, a dense matrix of collagen, along with some GAGs, that provides structural and nutritive support (22). Keratin, collagen, and GAGs are abundant in bone broth, particularly if the skin from the animal is included in the cooking process. In a 2014 randomized and controlled trial, collagen consumption significantly improved skin elasticity and tended to improve skin moisture content (23). Collagen scaffolds are widely used in medical applications to promote tissue regeneration and heal wounds (24). One study in mice found that supplementing the diet with gelatin was able to protect against UV-induced skin damage (25). GAGs offer additional skin benefits. The GAG hyaluronic acid has been shown to promote skin cell proliferation and increase the presence of retinoic acid, which improves the skin’s hydration (26), and dermatan sulfate has been shown to aid in cell turnover and wound repair (27). Metabolic and cardiovascular health Remember glycine, an amino acid that is particularly abundant in bone broth? Glycine plays a role in blood sugar regulation by controlling gluconeogenesis, the production of glucose in the liver (28), and has even been suggested to counteract some of the negative effects of dietary fructose consumption (29). Glycine has also been shown to reduce the size of heart attacks (30). Furthermore, glycine balances out methionine intake. Muscle meats and eggs are high in methionine, an amino acid that raises homocysteine levels in the blood. High homocysteine is a significant risk factor for serious diseases like heart disease, stroke, mental illness, and fractures and increases our need for homocysteine-neutralizing nutrients like vitamins B6, B12, folate, and choline (31). Those eating lots of animal protein need adequate glycine to balance out the methionine from meat, and you’ll get that from bone broth. For more information, check out Denise Minger’s awesome presentation in which she discusses this very issue. Muscle and performance Glycine is also important for the synthesis of hemoglobin and myoglobin, which transport oxygen throughout the blood and muscle tissue, respectively (32). Glycine also increases creatine levels, which leads to an increase in anaerobic (high-intensity) exercise capacity, and stimulates the secretion of human growth hormone (HGH), which may enhance muscle repair (33, 34, 35). Recent evidence suggests that proline may play a role in regulating the mTOR cellular signaling pathway, which integrates signals from nutrients, growth factors, stress factors, and cellular energy status to affect cell function and growth. Proline, together with other amino acids, activates mTOR, resulting in enhanced muscle protein synthesis (36). Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the chemical form of energy in the body that can be used to perform work. Phosphorus is required for the formation of this compound, and ATP cannot be biologically active unless bound to a magnesium ion. Phosphorus deficiency has been shown to reduce muscle performance (37, 38). Both phosphorus and magnesium are present in bone broth in modest amounts. Bones and joints It should be pretty obvious that the best way to get the nutrients necessary to build bone is from bone itself! Drinking bone broth provides all of the raw material for building healthy bones: calcium, phosphorus, amino acids, and more. A deficiency of the raw materials for building bone can result in a number of different conditions. For example, osteoporosis is associated with reduced levels of collagen and calcium in the bones (39, 40). Of course, you’ll also need the nutrients required to support the building process, like vitamins D, K2, and C. (To learn more about building healthy bones and where to get these nutrients on a Paleo diet, check out this article.) As for joint health, lubrication by GAGs is the key to a full range of motion, whereby part of one bone can slide smoothly and painlessly over part of another. Sure, you could buy expensive supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate to keep your joints healthy, but why, when these and a host of other beneficial nutrients can easily be obtained from bone broth? After all, GAGs are not the only component of broth that improves joint health. Collagen supplementation has been shown to reduce joint pain in athletes (41). Gut health A healthy colon contains a single tight layer of epithelial cells, a thick mucus layer, and a diverse collection of microbes. Microbial dysbiosis and a thinning of this mucus layer can quickly compromise the integrity of the epithelial barrier. Microbes and dietary proteins can then “leak” into the bloodstream and invoke an inflammatory response by the immune system. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of bacterial cell walls, stimulates a particularly robust immune response (42). Bone broth is a staple of gut-healing diets, and rightfully so! Gelatin absorbs water and helps maintain the layer of mucus that keeps gut microbes away from the intestinal barrier. In a mouse model, gelatin supplementation reduced the severity of colitis by strengthening the mucus layer and altering gut microbiota composition (43). Gelatin and glycine have also been shown to reduce the inflammation caused by LPS (44, 45). Glycine has been shown to protect against gastric ulcers as well (46). Glutamine also helps maintain the integrity of the gut mucosa and intestinal barrier (47). Digestion Bone broth has so many benefits to gut health that I had to make digestion its own section! Drinking broth with meals is an excellent way to aid digestion. Glycine stimulates the production of stomach acid, which is essential for the proper digestion of food (48). Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) is surprisingly common in developed countries and can lead to a number of health issues. Glycine is also an important component of bile acid, which is released to aid in the digestion of fats in the small intestine (49). Bile acid is important for maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels. The presence of gelatin in the gut also draws fluid into the intestine, improving gut motility and supporting healthy bowel movements. Low blood levels of collagen have been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (50). Detoxification, liver, and kidney health Recently, there has been some concern regarding the lead toxicity of bone broth. However, the vitamins and minerals that are abundant in bone broth, and in Paleo diets in general, can protect against the harmful effects of toxins like lead. Glycine also stimulates production of glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant (51). In animal models, glycine has been shown to speed recovery from alcohol-induced fatty liver disease (52), protect liver cells against hypoxia (53), and improve survival after liver transplantation (54). In humans, glycine reduces oxidative stress in patients with metabolic syndrome (55). Proline plays a role in apoptosis, the process by which the body breaks down old cells, clears up waste products, and recycles raw materials for use in healthy cells (56). Proline can scavenge free radicals, effectively acting as an antioxidant (57). Glutamine, on the other hand, acts as a nontoxic nitrogen transporter, carrying amine groups safely through the bloodstream to the kidney. In the kidney, the conversion of glutamine to glutamate regulates acid–base balance by producing ammonium (58). Eye health Yes, bone broth may improve eye health. The cornea consists of three primary layers: an outer epithelial layer, a middle layer, and an inner endothelial layer. Hyaluronic acid stimulates proliferation of the epithelial cells that line the cornea (59) and is commonly used during eye surgery to help replace lost fluids (60). The middle, or stromal, layer is largely made of collagen, keratan sulfates, and chondroitin sulfates. Keratan sulfates have been shown to be essential to the transparency of the cornea (61), while chondroitin sulfate has been shown to influence the development of neural pathways in the retina (62). The amino acid glycine has also been shown to delay the progression of cataracts in a rat model of diabetes (63). Brain health Numerous components of bone broth influence the nervous system. The healthy fats in bone broth, particularly if made with marrow bones, provide a source of fuel and raw material for the brain. After all, more than 60 percent of the human brain is composed of fat (64). Glycine has been shown to protect against neuronal death after ischemic stroke (65) and likely plays a pertinent role in the development of the brain in the womb and during the first few months after birth (66). Calcium is essential for nerve conduction. When a nerve cell is stimulated, the influx of calcium triggers neurotransmitter release, allowing the signal to be passed on to the next nerve cell. Calcium deficiency affects this transmission and can result in symptoms of depression, insomnia, and hyperactivity. Lastly, chondroitin sulfate plays an important role in regeneration and plasticity in the central nervous system (67), meaning it is essential for learning and memory. Mood and sleep Bone broth can also improve both mood and sleep. Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it can decrease anxiety, promote mental calmness, and help with sleep (68). One study found that three grams of glycine given to subjects before bedtime produced measurable improvements in sleep quality (69). Unlike methionine, glycine does not compete with tryptophan for transport across the blood–brain barrier (70). Tryptophan is the precursor (raw material) for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being. Serotonin, in turn, is a precursor to melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep–wake cycles. This is why a diet that includes bone broth and fattier cuts of meat can help prevent the depression and insomnia that some people may experience when eating a diet high in methionine-rich lean meat and eggs. Immune function While ancient folk wisdom suggests that bone broth can cure the common cold, modern science has confirmed that the components of bone broth do indeed influence the immune system. For example, glycine receptors have been identified on the outer surface of several different types of immune cells (71, 72). The effect is a dampening of the immune response, resulting in reduced inflammatory signaling molecules and oxidative stress that may reduce damage to lungs and other tissues (73). The GAG heparin sulfate has been shown to influence B cell function, T cell function, and macrophage activity (74).
Where to source bone broth
To summarize, bone broth has an incredible number of potential health benefits and is rooted in a long history of human use. It makes an excellent addition to any diet and can be used in a multitude of dishes. Bone broth can be made at home or it can be bought pre-made. Homemade bone broth is simple to make. Ask your local farmers if they have soup bones, or roast a whole pastured chicken and save the bones for making broth. Chicken feet, chicken necks, calves’ feet, and marrow bones are particularly valuable additions to broth. You can find a good basic recipe over at the Weston A. Price Foundation website. Pre-made bone broth is also a good option. Be sure to:
Buy broth that is organic and made from pasture-raised animals or wild-caught fish (this minimizes the toxins and maximizes the nutrients you get from the bone broth).
Avoid cans and other containers that contain bisphenol A (BPA), a potent endocrine disruptor, or other BPA substitutes.
Check out my favorite brand of broth: Kettle and Fire uses bones of organic, pasture-raised animals along with organic vegetables, sea salt, and herbs, all slow-simmered for 24 hours.
However you choose to get your hands on this liquid gold, be sure to make bone broth a staple in your diet! Now I want to hear from you. Did you know the benefits of bone broth? Has bone broth improved your health? Let us know in the comments!

Why You Need to Be Taking L-Theanine
People often ask me why I use supplements. After all, our hunter-gatherer ancestors didn’t take them. Our ancient ancestors didn’t take them, nor did our medieval ones or our pre-industrial ones. In fact, nutritional supplementation is one of the most modern inputs you can imagine and, in a perfect world while eating a perfect diet, it should be unnecessary.
But the world is not perfect. We don’t have the same foods available to us that our ancestors ate during the formative years of our evolution, and even if we did, modern farming practices altered mineral levels in the soil. Supplementation can restore some semblance of a “natural” food environment.
Overcoming the stressors of modernity, however, is harder, because it’s not a matter of avoiding the wrong foods and eating the right ones then smoothing out the rough patches with smart supplements. Modern stressors are mostly unavoidable. You have to deal with them. Endure them. And that’s where supplements can really help. Like L-theanine.
What is L-Theanine?
One of my favorite anti-stress supplements is L-theanine. It’s an amino acid found in green and white tea that is structurally similar to glutamine, GABA, and glutamate. It crosses the blood-brain barrier after oral dosing, appearing in the hippocampus and increasing alpha-waves in the brain in less than an hour. It’s clearly “doing stuff” up there. But what are the benefits?
L-Theanine Benefits
The majority of L-theanine’s benefits revolve around our response to stress and anxiety. L-theanine takes the edge of things. More specifically and in addition, L-theanine:
Reduces stress
Lowers anxiety
Improves performance
Smoothes out the effect of caffeine
Improves sleep
Restores immune function
Protects against alcoholic liver damage
L-Theanine as a Stress Reducer
When you meditate, your brain is pumping alpha waves. When you’re having a restful morning with . not much to do but hang around and quietly enjoy your time, you’re alpha wave-dominant. When you’re sitting on the beach listening to the waves lap the shore, a brain scan would reveal a ton of alpha wave activity. And when you take 50 mg of L-theanine, your alpha brainwaves kick in after about an hour.1
L-Theanine as an Anxiety Buster
L-theanine isn’t a benzodiazepine. It won’t brute force your brain into an overwhelming state of supreme chill. For L-theanine to reduce your anxiety, you must actually be anxious. Now, much anxiety is hidden, even to ourselves. We may not know that we’re anxious about something. We may not recognize it. So theanine can really help, as long as there’s something for it to help against.
The downside is that it’s subtler than taking a pharmaceutical anti-anxiety med; you don’t “feel it” as much as taking something like xanax. The upside is that it doesn’t make you drowsy and it’s non-addictive. In fact, most people tolerate theanine so well that researchers have been unable to identify a toxic dose. I’m not suggesting you take an entire bottle, of course. There may be a toxic dose, somewhere, somehow. But subjects have taken 400 mg of L-theanine every day for 8 weeks straight without apparent ill effect.
L-Theanine as a Performance Enhancer
L-theanine is most effective at improving the cognitive performance of people undergoing stress. In studies, this takes the form of artificially stressful environments—loud noises, oppressive rules, that sort of thing. In real life, stress is more unpredictable, and I’d argue that most of us are in stressful environments, even if we’re not consciously aware of it. If you’re lucky enough to live a totally stress-free life, L-theanine may not help your performance.
Here’s what I mean: In subjects doing mental tasks in a stressful environment, taking theanine improved performance, reduced blood pressure, and lowered subjective stress-anxiety levels.2
L-Theanine and Caffeine
If you get the jitters or anxiety from caffeine, have 100-200 mg of L-theanine with it. The combination has been shown to smooth out the effects of caffeine and reduce anxiety while retaining performance. That’s why you feel awake and alert after a cup of tea, but without the jittery feeling that coffee gives you.
L-Theanine: Sleep Enhancer
Much like its relationship with mental performance, the ability of L-theanine to enhance sleep depends on the psychological status of the individual.
If you suffer from anxiety or stress, L-theanine has been shown to improve sleep quality and efficiency and reduce sleep latency and usage of sleeping meds.3
If you’re a kid with ADHD, 400 mg of L-theanine can help with sleep quality.4
If you’re being treated for clinical depression, 250 mg of theanine per day should help reduce sleep disturbances at night.5
If you’re being treated for schizophrenia, 250 mg of daily L-theanine should improve sleep quality.6
But if you have good sleep and good mental health, L-theanine won’t be a big boost to your sleep quality—unless you have significant stress in your life (which most do).
L-Theanine for Immune System Restoration
Back about 20 years ago, I developed an anti-stress supplement meant to combat the overreach and overtraining so many endurance athletes experience. Like me. See, I would get dozens of colds each year. Even though I looked healthy and fit, my immune system was constantly playing catch up. All my running and training didn’t leave any resources for the rest of my physiology. Everything was devoted to recovery.
That supplement, originally called Proloftin but now called Adaptogenic Calm, included L-theanine in addition to four other key anti-stress ingredients. I developed it to fix my own issues, and sure enough, it worked (and as it turned out, many others had the same problem).
As we can see from recent research, it wasn’t just placebo. In one study, endurance athletes supplemented with a cysteine and L-theanine product starting ten days prior to training. They ran immune tests before and after training, and the group who got the cysteine and L-theanine supplement had lower C-reactive protein, lower neutrophil count, and higher lymphocyte levels, indicatives of a lower inflammatory and immune load.7
L-Theanine and Liver Health
We don’t have direct evidence of isolated L-theanine improving a person’s liver’s resistance to things like alcohol, but we do have two other lines of evidence.
First, the animal studies that show supplemental L-theanine protects the liver against alcohol-induced injury and increases liver glutathione content (the antioxidant we use to detoxify ethanol).89
Second, the many observational studies linking green tea consumption to improved liver health and robustness, like the one where green tea consumption seemed to protect against fatty liver.10
L-Theanine: Dosage You Should Take
Oral doses as low as 50 mg have been shown to induce alpha brain waves in healthy humans and doses up to 600 mg per day have been safely tested. Generally, people can tolerate an awful lot of L-theanine without any problems. In fact, you’d have to eat hundreds of grams of pure L-theanine powder to even approach the LD50.
How I Use L-Theanine
The most common way I take L-theanine is by popping a few caps of Adaptogenic Calm, the anti-stress supplement I’ve been making and using for over a decade. You don’t have to take Adaptogenic Calm to get L-theanine, but I’m pretty happy with the synergistic effects of the ingredients.
On the rare occasion I feel acutely stressed out, I’ll take some L-theanine powder under my tongue and let it sit there. L-theanine is water-soluble, so in theory it should absorb sublingually. It certainly feels like it does—I get an almost immediate effect. The taste is subtly sweet. Not something you seek out, not something you avoid either.
You can also get it from green tea, but it will be difficult to hit the 100/200 mg mark found to be most effective in clinical trials through tea alone. Average theanine doses in a cup of green tea range between 25-60 mg. It’s doable, especially if you luck out with a theanine-rich source of tea—you just have to drink a good amount.
That’s it for my take on L-theanine. All in all, it’s a great compound to keep on hand and, perhaps, take on a regular basis. Very little downside, almost all upside.
Have you ever tried L-theanine? Notice anything? How do you use it yourself?
Thanks for reading, everyone.

How Long Does It Take to Have an Empty Stomach?
By Dr. Mercola The question posed in the headline is a common one learn by doctors everywhere: “How long does it take to have an empty stomach? ” It’s an important question for anyone taking prescription drugs because what the hell are you feed and sip, as well as the timing of your snacks, can affect the course certain medications work. Beyond that, there is currently appreciate in becoming aware of the health benefits associated with regularly emptying your stomach. If your first belief, when you hear the words “empty stomach, ” is a negative one, it’s time to update your thinking. Not simply are you able live on an empty stomach, you can also thrive. In my experience, emptying your stomach as a daily habit — through intermittent fasting or another safe type of fasting — can boost your health and well-being. The influences can be so radical that you actually may be able to reduce( or potentially eliminate) your use of prescription drugs as your health improves. Taking Medications? How Do You Know When Your Belly Is Empty? “Ask Well, ” a medical question and answer aspect presented in The New York Times, 1 recently fielded this investigation: “Many medications should be taken on an empty stomach. How do you know when your belly is evacuate? ” Dr. Richard Klasco, assistant prof of emergency drug at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who provided the answer, wrote, “Two hours after eating is a petroleum rule of thumb. A more accurate answer depends on the stimulants you are taking and your medical conditions.”2 Klasco goes on to note that experiment on gastric emptying — the length of hour it takes for your stomach to return to empty after a snack — has been going on since the 1940 s. Over the years, the experimentations have changed based on scientific and medical improvements. Since 1966, nuclear medication, which involves the use of a small amount of radioactive material to eject photon vigor, has remained as the established criterion for quantifying gastric emptying. Says Klasco: 3 “Standards for such testing have been set by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society and the Society of Nuclear Medicine. They state that a normal stomach should be 90 percentage evacuate after four hours.4 The difference between service standards and the earlier examine probably reflects differences in meat. Solids take longer to digest than liquids; flabs take longer to digest than protein or carbohydrates. The[ U.S .] Food and Drug Administration[ FDA] … defines an empty belly as ‘one hour before eating, or two hours after eating.'” Klasco indicates the FDA’s two-hour rule is only an estimate, which means your stomach “will probably not be completely empty” after two hours, he asserts.5 In addition, Klasco emphasizes the fact that the expectations for an empty belly vary widely from medication to medicine. It’s best, he says, to spoke the packet set that accompanies all prescription drugs dispensed in the U.S. and to clarify any uncertainties with your doctor. The insert includes, Klasco says, each drug’s FD-Aapproved prescribing datum. It is often located glued to the medicine packet in the shape of a tightly folded, fine-print flyer.”6 For easier see, you may want to review the insert details online at DailyMed, an internet site operated by the U.S. National Library of Medicine — a limb of the National Institutes of Health( NIH) — that contains more than 105,000 detailed drug listings.7 With respect to stomach emptying and drugs, Klasco mentions some medical conditions, like diabetes, can delay gastric emptying, whereas a bariatric surgery can accelerate it.8 Again, check with your doctor to find out the best evacuating guidelines for your particular situation. How Fasting Positively Affects Your Mitochondria and Your Health By far, the best and quickest itinerary to an empty belly is to stop eating, otherwise known as fasting. This simple act of forgoing meat for a certain period of time not only ensures belly emptying, but it have now been validated as a powerful lifestyle tool for combating insulin resistance and obesity, as well as chronic diseases like cancer and many other health problems. Not merely does fasting upregulate autophagy and mitophagy — two of your body’s natural cleansing procedures necessary for optimal cellular renewal and part — but it also triggers the generation of stem cells. Beyond that, cyclically abstaining from meat and then initiating refeeding also massively encourages mitochondrial biogenesis, the process by which brand-new mitochondria are created. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of your cells, producing about 90 percent of the vigour being generated in your figure. Because energy is needed to support almost every bodily process, without healthy mitochondria you will be more vulnerable to illness and illnes. Your mitochondria likewise act as the coordinator for apoptosis — programmed cell death — an important process to ensure the deaths among malfunctioning cells that might otherwise degenerate into cancer. There’s even prove showing fasting can help prevent or even overrule dementia because it helps your figure clean out toxic debris. The reason for this is because when autophagy increases, your torso starts breaking down and recycling old protein, including the beta amyloid protein in your brain that is believed to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. While water-only fasting can be extremely beneficial for those struggling with excess load and/ or Type 2 diabetes, compliance can be difficult. Fortunately, research has confirmed that similar answers, although it is not as profound, can be achieved through intermittent fasting. This type of fasting involves following a meal-timing schedule where you’re fasting for at the least 16 hours every day and feeing all of your meals within a six- to eight-hour window. Are You Caught in a Cycle of Grazing and Snacking? Fasting Can Help In the occurrence you’ve not yet considered trying intermittent fasting, I would like to once again remind you of the enormous health benefits associated with this practice. You may be avoiding intermittent fasting because you associate “fasting” with starvation or simply because it seems too daunting and challenging to attain the necessary adjustments. As mentioned, the goals and targets with this type of fasting is to forego meat for at the least 16 hours per day. As such, you will want to hop-skip either the first or last-place snack of the working day.( I recommend the first snack .) As such, you will consolidate all of your calorie intake into the remaining cube of eight or fewer hours. I have had great success with intermittent fasting and highly recommend you take your first banquet at around lunchtime. I also admonish you avoid devouring anything at least three hours before you go to bed. The theory of intermittent fasting is still catching on in the U.S ., a country plagued by all-day grazing and the continuous accessibility of meat round the clock. While grocery stores and eateries used to close by 8 or 9 p. m ., many establishments now remain open until midnight and some 24 hours per day, seven days a few weeks. Authors of a 2017 learn published in the periodical Nutrients, reviewing 35 years of snacking demeanor by American adults, stated: 9 “Results show that snacking remains a significant component of the U.S. diet and the meat expended at these snacks — sugar-sweetened beverages, desserts and sweets and salty snacks — are not the types of meat recommended by the U.S. dietary guidelines.” If you realize constant snacking is crippling your health, please examine my “Intermittent Fasting Infographic” for detailed information about this mode of eating and the recommended period windows you are able to establish. If forgoing eating for 16 hours seems overwhelming at first, given a smaller objective and work your behavior up. If your experience is anything like excavation, the hours you set aside to give your body’s digestive and other systems a break from meat will grow health benefits beyond your imagination. In hour, as you begin to realize some of the health benefits, you will likely become more motivated to do intermittent fasting on a regular basis. The Health Benefits Available From Intermittent Fasting When done well, intermittent fasting delivers a number of impressive health benefits. You will certainly discovered others that are meaningful to you beyond what is listed below. Research demonstrates intermittent fasting: 10, 11, 12 * Increases your cognitive function — Intermittent fasting improves your cognitive purpose by providing your brain with its favor fuel: fat instead of glucose. Studies indicate intermittent fasting are contributing to the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s because of the boost in brain-derived neurotropic factor( BDNF ), a protein that is both neuroprotective and brain-stimulating. * Minimizes food cravings and thirst stabs — While you may think you’ll be depriving your figure through fasting, the truth is it is a helpful technique known to eliminate cravings and reduce hunger stabs. It does this mainly by moving your figure away from dependence on glucose for energy. * Normalizes your insulin and leptin sensitivity — Your body’s blood sugar tier is closely regulated not only by insulin, but likewise by leptin. Both hormones affect your food intake and load, as well as your risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes. As mentioned, intermittent fasting shiftings your form away from being dependent on glucose, which then curtails your carbohydrate craves, thus normalizing your insulin and leptin sensitivity. * Promotes cellular regeneration — Intermittent fasting promotes cell regeneration by triggering autophagy, a natural, “self-eating” process your torso uses to recycle damaged cells. It helps inhibit cancerous rises and the process of developing chronic disease. If you are eating throughout the day every day, your form has very little time for restore and rehabilitation. By imparting it a break from eating, your figure can alter its focus to growing brand-new cells, cleaning up cellular debris and removing poisons — activities it cannot perform otherwise. * Shifts your torso to ignite flab for fuel — Restriction your meat intake forces your figure to switch away from glucose to igniting fat as a source of energy. This change often results in weight loss and is conducive to other betterments based on the fact fat is a more efficient and longer-burning fuel. Contraindications Associated With Intermittent Fasting To be successful with intermittent fasting you will want to ensure your doctor approves and that you do not have a serious medical precondition for which it would be contraindicated. By the behavior, fasting beyond 24 hours is not recommended for children. A better style to aid a child lose weight is to restrict or remove refined grains and sugary meat from their diet. Fasting may not be recommended if you are TAGEND * Malnourished — If this is your situation, you will want to put your places great importance on eating healthier, most nutritious food and adding supplements as needed * Pregnant or breastfeeding — As a mom this is necessary a incessant render of nutrients protecting your baby’s health rise and progress; fasting could set both the health of you and your babe at risk * Taking drug — If you’re on drug, check with medical doctors before taking up fasting. That said, even if your doctor approves, you’ll need to take care with drugs that must be taken with food. Metformin, aspirin and similar medications can cause stomach upset or belly ulcers when taken on an empty belly. The danger of fus is especially high if you’re on diabetic medication. * Underweight — If you have a figure mass indicator( BMI) of eighteen. 5 or lower, fasting is not safe for you because it may increase the stress on your torso and/ or cause you to lose more weight. Tips to Ensure Your Success With Intermittent Fasting While you can simply restrict your devouring window to eight or fewer hours while continuing to eat and booze whatever you crave, you’ll get a lot more out of fasting if you TAGEND * Drink spate of sea and other health liquids — During fasting, make sure you’re getting enough liquids to keep yourself feeling full and satisfied. Boozing clean, pure water and beverages such as organic coffee and tea — in moderation — will be contributing curb meat cravings, especially as you two are begin fasting. As you might reckon, drinking booze, vigor drinks, soda and other unhealthy beverages would be counterproductive to fasting. * Eliminate processed foods from your diet — One of the advantages of fasting is detoxification. As such, you’ll recognise more health benefits by devouring whole foods such as organic vegetables, healthy flabs and grass fed meat. By eliminating processed foods from your diet, you will support your form in healing and detoxification. * Incorporate practise into your daily routine — Operating out in a fasted nation can deliver amazing outcomes. Without a ready furnish of glucose and glycogen from which to outline — because it has been depleted over the course of your fasted state and has already been to be replenished — your body is forced to adapt and pulling from the only energy informant available: fat stored in your cells. Some of those kinds of exercise I recommend include: high-intensity interval teach, extending, strolling, weight training courses and yoga. * Make sleep a high priority — Getting about eight hours of quality sleep a darknes will do wonders for your health. Most adults are chronically sleep-deprived, which has numerous negative health effects, including increasing the health risks of accidents and chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer. * Receive aid from your best friend and family — It is very important for you to have the support of your friends and family, specially the people with whom you live, as you undertake intermittent fasting. These tribes can share the travel and spur you in moments of weakness when you two are tempted to give up. With some thoughtful planning and careful consideration, you can empty your stomach and unleash a whole new level of health through intermittent fasting. For even better results and to maximize your fat-burning potential, I indicate you mix intermittent fasting with a cyclical ketogenic diet. For all the details on how to do this, please refer to my clause “Why Intermittent Fasting Is More Effective Blended With Ketogenic Diet.” Read more: articles.mercola.com http://dailybuzznetwork.com/index.php/2018/10/23/how-long-does-it-take-to-have-an-empty-stomach/

But you’ll probably be asked to invest up-front. Options may include $60 for the Training Kit, $219 for the Basic Body Kit, $649 for the Advanced Body Kit, or $949 for the Ultimate Body Kit. You’ll probably also be encouraged to register a Zinzino4Free Kit on AutoOrder. That will set you back anywhere from $44 to $109 a month.
4. Is Zinzino a scam? No, Zinzino is a publicly traded company selling real products. But you need to do due diligence before joining. There may be better options for improving your health and making some extra money.
5. What is Zinzino’s BBB rating? They aren’t listed by the BBB.
6. How long has Zinzino been in business? Since 2005
7. What is Zinzino’s revenue? 540.3 million Swedish Kroner (about 601.6 million USD)
8. How many Zinzino distributors are there? No numbers have been released online.
9. What lawsuits have been filed? In 2017, Truth in Advertising found misleading income claims among Zinzino’s marketing. [1]
10. Comparable companies: Young Living, Melaleuca, Kyani
Does this mean you should get involved?
Product-wise this company might be legit, but if you’re just interested in the business opportunity, there are better options out there…

Either way, here’s 17 things you need to consider before joining Zinzino.
#17. Founded in 2005, expanded globally
They got off to a pretty sad start, to be honest. But when they introduced health products, they took off running and were named the growth business of 2011.
They just came to the U.S. in the fall of 2013, and at this point, the good old red-white-and-blue still only accounts for 4% of their sales. [2]
But they’re still just getting started.
In 2016, they started plans to explode geographically, with aggressive expansion into multiple new markets, including Germany (watch out, Vorwerk), Europe’s largest market for direct sales. [3]
#16. Sellers engage in lying
MLM distributors are not shy when it comes to fabricating their products, but Zinzino’s take it to a new level.
In Iceland, in 2015 the company had to send a warning to its sellers for making false health claims, such as that the oil fights ADHD, Asperger’s and dyslexia. [4]
#15. Warnings issued against the company
The false claims have gotten so bad that the Danish Consumer Council lawyers warn people to stay away from both Zinzino products and their recruitment.
They describe Zinzino’s practices as “on the edge of the law.” [5]
#14. Basically reselling marked-up products
Eventually, they made enough in revenue to buy Biolife, the manufacturer of the fish oil and test that they sell, but before that, customers could easily buy their oils directly from BioLife at a cheaper price. [6]
And still, customers can buy their coffee products (like Organo Gold) much cheaper directly from the manufacturer.
You buy their coffee in a subscription for 12 months, so you get new pods every month. It costs about $349 for the machine and initial order, then another $33/month after.
Purchasing through the manufacturer, the machine alone is $234. You can then order a month’s supply of pods for $26 rather than $33. [7]
Basically, new customers are paying a huge markup on product just to get the rights to resell Zinzino products in hopes of a future payoff.
#13. Health and wellness niche selling nutritional supplements
Zinzino sells both nutritional and coffee products. Their popular nutritional products include…
LeanShake with various weight loss challenges (lose 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds, etc)
BalanceOIL various packages, wild fish oil + quality olive oil
Their coffee products are coffee machines and coffee pods. They still don’t offer coffee products in many of their countries, including the U.S. [8]
Overall, health products are about 75% of their sales while coffee is about 25%. [9]
#12. Their oil supposedly cures a dangerous imbalance all humans have
This is their major selling point.
Basically, we all have these omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, but we don’t have enough, and we don’t have the proper balance between the two. This is the root, they claim, of many of our health problems. [10]
To prove that you have an imbalance of fatty acids, they even sell a (pricey) BalanceTest that, after sent back, will give you results of your omega-3 and omega-6 levels.
When you inevitably have an imbalance, they claim their oils and shakes can help adjust and solve it. For many customers, this balance is improved after a few months, but…
#11. Not the best way to get fish oil
Studies have shown that we do need more fish oil, but getting it from actual fish is highly preferable. [11]
Basically, the EPA content in your blood increases a lot faster and more sustainably when you eat fish versus when you take supplements. [12]
#10. Premiere customer program
Commit to a 6-month subscription and you become a premier customer and get discounted product.
For example, the LeanShake lose 5 pounds challenge costs $249 for a one-month initial order, but it’s $108 a month if you subscribe
#9. Headquartered in Sweden
Most of their market is still in Europe, as you can see from this map. But they have offices and factories in both Norway and the US as well as plans for expansion.
#8. Decent revenue
While they’re no Coca-Cola, their revenue has increased to an impressive $601.6 million annually.
So, they’re making some money. But are their distributors?
#7. FREE to join
This is a big plus. Basically no risk for you, so why no?
There’s no fee to become an independent distributor and no purchase requirements, which almost never happens in MLM.
#6. Compensation plan
Distributors pocket the difference between wholesale and retail price.
They can earn anywhere from 10-50% profit depending on the product. That’s a huge difference, and it’s important to remember that most if not nearly all their distributors probably fall on the lower end when it comes to profit.
If you build a premier customer base (customers with monthly subscriptions), you can get 1-30% on their monthly orders. Again, huge range. 30% is great, while 1% is literal pennies on the dollar.
If you build a team of partners, you can get another 1-15% off their premier customer base. AGAIN, 1%? What?
You must be active to receive commission, which means ordering a minimum amount of product every month. So while it’s free to join, you really do have to spend money to get anything out of it.
#5. Revenue sharing program
They do a revenue sharing program too. In the range of 20-40 euros monthly (4-8 shares) in shares if you hit certain levels.
#4. Founded and run by controversial Norwegian businessman Finn Ørjan Sæle
This man built up Nature’s Own to be the largest networking company in Scandinavia.
Impressive, right?
Yeah, until it completely tanked in the mid-2000s due to “questions about the legality of their sales model”. [13]
#3. Return policy is kind of useless
They have a 90-day return policy, but you have to return the products unopened and unused, and there’s a 10% restocking fee.
Kinda defeats the purpose of a return policy. Usually, you’d try the product, figure out you don’t like it, and THEN ask for your money back.
But it is helpful for new distributors, as they can order a bunch of product, and if they decide to quit, (in theory) they send a written notice and return product they couldn’t sell.
#2. Publicly traded on NASDAQ through First North
They are a public company technically, but First North is an unregulated unofficial branch for smaller companies and “growth” companies. Trading started for Zinzino 2014. [14]
#1. Their valuation has decreased steadily
They peaked at the end of 2014 and have steadily declined since then. Their 1-year return is -17.43%. [15]
Things aren’t looking good.
Recap
Zinzino isn’t a bad company at all. If you like the products and have a market, go for it. But as far as a money making opportunity goes, your time could probably be better spent.
Look, I’ve been involved with network marketing for over ten years so I know what to look for when you consider a new opportunity.

8 People Who Taught Us to Love Our Bodies in 2017
New Post has been published on http://foursprout.com/health/8-people-who-taught-us-to-love-our-bodies-in-2017/
8 People Who Taught Us to Love Our Bodies in 2017
Generally speaking, 2017 was pretty rough. We can all agree hate reared its ugly head way too many times. But it also forced us to find common ground—and realize we’re not so different after all, no matter what we look like.
With the year (finally) coming to close, we want to celebrate all the regular people who made the biggest difference in how we see ourselves. Check out these eight inspirational badasses who shared their stories and changed the way we look at our bodies.
1. The Woman Who Reminded Us to Love the Things We Can’t Change
This is apart of me I’m not changing. 🚫 Not only do I not have the finances to chance this part of my body, I don’t have the emotionality to change it. To actually undergo the surgery I’ve researched and phoned in about so many times, I can’t do it. ❌ I don’t blame others for going through it, it’s just not something that I can do. I honestly don’t even hate this part of me anymore, through #embracethesquish I have found more and more women who help me accept this part of myself. 🌸 There’s nothinggggg to be ashamed of. A body part that doesn’t look like the body parts you’ve seen PLASTERED in the media, doesn’t make it wrong. Yes it’ll feel wrong to embrace. Yes it’s counterintuitive to love yourself as is. Yes there will be moments where you’re not fucking good at accepting yourself. And you’ll truck through all of them, just like you have with the last x amount of years of yourself. When I get messages from my friends, people from my city, women from other countries, on different continents, within different cultures that tell me I help them love themselves a bit better, I end up loving myself a bit more in the process. GOOD ATTRACTS GOOD. If what you’re doing right now DOESNT feel good, STOP. Start doing something that might be a little scary (but may be a little fun) and try something new. Chasing yourself in circles fuelled by dislike, hate, negativity will NOT equal out to a positive, well balanced, harmonious, loving, soothing, body, mind or soul. If could all just embrace the squish a little more maybe we wouldn’t be as rigid to ourselves and to others. #selflovebootcamp #selfloveisthebestlove #beyourownhero #beautybeyondsize 💞💞💞💞💞

When Kenzie Brenna lost a ton of weight, it didn’t disappear without a trace. It became loose skin, which is what happens to pretty much everyone. So what makes Brenna so special? Rather than obsessing over and hating her imperfections, Brenna started the process of learning to love and accept them. She reminded us how important it is to embrace our bodies as they are instead of pinching and prodding and falling into a circle of self-hate.

2. The Guy Who Reminded Us Not to Take the Wellness World Too Seriously
COMPLEX CARBS // Still think that delicious beige food is bad for you? You’re wrong. Why? Let me spell it out for you… . . 1) They taste fucking great and make you happy. 2) They’re brain food. Your think tank runs on glucose and is actually your hungriest organ, using up a load of energy each day. Eating carbs keeps you sharp and awake. (Omg that’s actual science stuff. I’m not even taking the piss. I have no idea where that came from. It just slipped out, sorry.) 3) Dr Heinz and his Alphabet Spaghetti are a prime example of just how complex (and therefore great for your IQ as well as energy levels) carbs can be. You don’t see Algebraic turkey steaks or String Theory coconut oil, do you? Exactly 4) Is anyone else hungry looking at this picture? I am. And I’ve just eaten it. 5) sorry, I’m rambling now. Maybe my glucose is probably low. I should probably have a bag of chips. 6) Speaking of chips. Sunday hangovers would be a whole lot worse without the warming blanket of deep-fried beige to coddle you back to health after too many bottles of blue WKD the night before. . . So, actually, the issue of carbs isn’t complex at all. It perfectly simple. Tell TOWIE to fuck off and say yes to Carbs before, during, after, in and around Marbs. You deserve it.
A post shared by Wellness Ted (@wellness_ted) on Nov 19, 2017 at 5:42am PST
As the husband of Insta-famous health blogger @wellness_ed, Edward Lane (a.k.a. @wellness_ted) knows too well how artificial the online wellness community can be. (Does anyone actually flex like that all the time? Do they ever eat anything other than salads?!) Lane created a parody Instagram to tell the world that NOPE, nobody looks like that all the time. And there’s definitely no reason anyone should feel obligated to. In case you forgot, you don’t need six-pack abs to be healthy.

3. The 105-Year-Old Who Still Teaches Yoga
If you think you’re too old to do the splits, think again. Lil Hansen is 105 years old and still teaches yoga once a week at the senior center in her hometown of Ludington, Michigan. She’s been doing it for years and has no plans to stop anytime soon. A viral news article published by Hansen’s hometown news station reminded the world that yoga (and fitness) is for every body, not just young ones.

4. The Woman Who Called Out Shapewear for What It Is
Same girl, same day, same time. 💛 Not a before and after. Not a weight loss transformation. Not a diet company promotion. 💛 I am comfortable with my body in both. Neither is more or less worthy. Neither makes me more or less of a human being. Neither invites degrading comments and neither invites sleezy words. 💛 We are so blinded to what a real unposed body looks like and blinded to what beauty is that people would find me less attractive within a 5 second pose switch! How insanely ridiculous is that!? 💛 I love taking these, it helps my mind so much with body dysmorphia and helps me rationalise my negative thoughts. 💛 Don’t compare, just live for you. There is no one on this planet who’s like you and that’s pretty damn amazing don’t ya think. The world doesn’t need another copy, it needs you. 💛 We are worthy, valid and powerful beyond measure 💙🌟 (If you don’t pull your tights up as high as possible are you really human?)
A post shared by Milly Smith 💛🌻☀️👑 (@selfloveclubb) on Jan 29, 2017 at 10:45am PST
Celebs and regular people alike swear by shapewear and its (admittedly amazing) smoothing powers. But Milly Smith, a body-positivity advocate, took to Instagram to remind us how dangerous shapewear can be for our self-perception. It’s important, Smith said, to remember we’re all attractive and worthy whether we have our Spanx on or not.

5. The Plus-Size Model Who Highlighted the Beauty of Every Body
As a photographer and plus-size model, Silvana Denker knows how unwelcoming the world can be to plus-size women. To fight back and (literally) highlight the beauty of every body, Denker made a photo project called “Metallic Curves,” where she painted plus-size women in silver and gold paint to capture all their curvy beauty.

6. The Mom Who Redefined What “Bikini Body” Means
Kirsten Bosly, a 41-year-old mother of two, spent years avoiding taking photos with her kids because of how self-conscious she was. But after realizing that one day, photos would be all her kids had left of her, she decided that how she looks in a bathing suit means nothing to the people who love her. The result was an adorable photo at the beach with her kids, which she posted on Facebook along with a super-inspiring message about letting go of shame.

7. This “Big Girl” Who Proved You Can’t Judge Someone Based on Their Appearance
Here’s to the big girls who work out. I’ll be honest — it still makes me cringe to refer to myself as big, but at 5’9 and 200+ lbs. it’s an accurate descriptor. I’ve worked out 4-6 days a week every week since February of 2010. That’s almost 7 years. I’ve been vegetarian since August 2015 and vegan since March 2016. I have practiced Transcendental Meditation for 2 years. I eat so many vegetables. I’m healthy AF. And yet my BMI places me squarely in the “obese” category. That’s right — not even overweight. Straight-up obese. My doctor’s office file says I have non-morbid obesity. I don’t think of it that way. I think of my body in terms of the fact that I just did a 52-minute @fitnessblender lower-body workout and I feel great. When I was young, a kid and a teen and even into my 20s, I believed the people who told me I was out of shape, unathletic. I love my dad dearly, but he was one of them. I felt humiliated to huff and puff and turn red and drip sweat when I exercised. I hated to be worse at *anything* than anyone. I saw exercise as punishment. I believed Jillian Michaels when she said I should want to die in the midst of a workout. But I overcame it. I still struggle with my body. But I don’t struggle with how I feel in it. I feel fantastic in it. So fuck BMI and fuck diet culture and fuck Lululemon for not carrying my size. But it doesn’t matter because my workout pants don’t need to cost $90. Here’s to the big girls. We are amazing. And if you’re a big girl who doesn’t work out, you’re amazing too. You have nothing to prove.
A post shared by Katie Karlson (@katieakarlson) on Jan 10, 2017 at 9:29am PST
Katie Karlson is a total badass. She’s 5’9″, weighs more than 200 pounds (yep, that makes her obese according to her BMI), is vegan, and has worked out four or more days per week for the last SIX years. In a powerful Instagram post, Karlson explained how messed up it is that everyone assumes big girls (and guys) are lazy or unfit and how the fitness industry doesn’t cater to her size.

8. The Nude Yogi Who Wants You to Love Your Naked Body
When I was younger I tried to make myself look shorter. At first when I was in primary school I was jelous of my tinier friends… They were so cute. People were lifting and holding them in their arms and it looked fun. I felt giant. Also at the same time I did team gymnastic and one year I didn’t qualify for the team like all of my friends did and it was obviously the “first team”. Nobody ever told me why but in my mind it was because I was too tall. I was one head taller than others in that team and because it’s also an aesthetic sport, it would make the team unbalanced. ❤ Eventually boys came in the game… I was taller than all nice boys and I hated it. In particular in all discos where the dance was slow… I tried to have bad posture on purpose to look as short as possible. ❤ Until I started to do modelling I thought that I’m never going to be able to use high heels. That I’m too tall to enjoy beautiful shoes. (And in the “model world” I was hoping that I would be even taller!) ❤ It would have been nice to know at a young age that one day my height could and will be my strenght which I really like. At festival concerts I can see well over all the heads. I don’t need chairs to get to the top closet. Etc. Now I’m proud and very grateful of my every centimeter. I just wanted to tell you how I struggled for many years with my height, if this can give hope to some who are in same situation. 😊 #NYGyoga

Nude Yoga Girl might look like she has zero insecurities (she is posing naked, after all), but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In a candid Instagram post, the anonymous yogi-slash-photographer reminded us we’re all insecure—but that doesn’t mean we should hide behind our fear. She opened up about her journey coming to terms with her height and how yoga helped her love her body just how it is.

The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in ‘Healthy’ Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola Are you eating a healthy, whole food diet yet still struggle with weight gain and health problems? Part of the problem might have to do with lectins. Dr. Steven Gundry,1 author of "The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in 'Healthy' Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain," makes a strong case for a lectin-free diet. While trained as a cardiothoracic surgeon, Gundry now specializes in treating patients holistically, focusing on food. He's been director of The International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine for the past 17 years. Before that, he was a clinical associate at the National Institutes of Health, where he invented devices that reverse cell death associated with acute heart attacks. He's also been a professor of surgery and pediatrics at the Loma Linda School of Medicine and chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma University Medical Center. I read about 150 books per year, most of which relate to health. Many of these books I can read in less than an hour, because they're just saying the same old thing. Gundry's bookis not one of those. It's a great resource filled with novel information. What Are Lectins? Download Interview Transcript From an evolutionary standpoint, any creature, including plants, has a built-in imperative to grow, thrive and propagate. Plants, being rooted into the ground, cannot outrun a predatory insect. Instead, plants use chemistry for self-defense. One of the plant kingdom's self-defense systems is lectins — not to be confused with lecithin or leptin. Lectins are plant proteins, sometimes called sticky proteins or glyca-binding proteins, because they seek out and bind to certain sugar molecules on the surface of cells. There are many types of lectins, and the main difference between them is the type of sugar each prefers and binds to. Some — including wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), found in wheat and other grass-family seeds — bind to specific receptor sites on your intestinal mucosal cells and interfere with the absorption of nutrients across your intestinal wall. As such, they act as "antinutrients," and can have a detrimental effect on your gut microbiome by shifting the balance of your bacterial flora — a common precursor to leaky gut. "I like to think of it as they hack into our communication system, or any predator's communication system," Gundry says. "For instance, in insects, they attack a sugar called sialic acid which, among other things, sits between the endings of nerves. One nerve talks to the other nerve by acetylcholine jumping through that space. Sialic acid allows that to happen. Lectins bind to sialic acid and so interrupt nerve transmission. If you think about it, paralyzing an insect is a great defense system because if the insect can't move, bingo, you've solved the problem. One of the things I've learned through the years through my patients is we're just a giant insect to a plant. What may happen to an insect fairly instantaneously by eating some plant lectins may take years in us, who are giant insects, to manifest. It may manifest as neuropathy, it may manifest as brain fog, arthritis or heart disease. But the longer I do this, the more I'm convinced that almost every disease process … can be traced back to … plant lectins. That's a long-winded explanation for how plants don't like us. They absolutely don't want to be eaten. They've had 400 million years to work out defense systems — a really long time." The Role of Your Microbiome One of the things that struck me about Gundry's approach is that it targets the mitochondria and the microbiome, both of which are vital for optimal health. Few physicians, even those in the integrative medicine field, fully understand the importance of mitochondrial function, but Gundry certainly does. And, while the human genome has received a majority of the scientific attention, the bacterial microbiome genome is actually far more important. As noted by Gundry: "Our microbiome is, I think, our early warning system, because about 99 percent of all the genes that make up [the human body] are actually nonhuman, they're bacterial, viral and fungal … [from which] we've uploaded most of the information about interacting with our environment … because the microbiome is capable of almost instantaneous changing and information processing that we actually don't have the ability to do. We're beginning to realize … that the microbiome is not only how we interact with plant materials … like lectins, but probably more importantly, our microbiome teaches our immune system whether a particular plant compound is a friend or foe [based on] how long we've known that plant compound. There are lectins in everything. But the longer we've interacted with lectins and the longer our microbiome has interacted with them, the more our microbiome kind of tells our immune system, 'Hey, guys, it's cool. We've known these guys for 40 million years. Chill out. They're a pain, but we can handle them.' From an evolutionary perspective, if you look at modern foods — say the grains and the beans, which we started interacting with 10,000 years ago, which is a blink of time — our microbiome [regards them as] foreign substances … [T]here's no lectin speed dating in evolution." The Importance of Mitochondrial Function With regard to mitochondria, "mitochondrial flexibility is one of the unique things that make us human," Gundry says, comparing the human race to a "fat-storing ape." Whether you ascribe to the evolutionary theory or not, humans and apes have many genetic similarities, but the ability to store fat is a unique human feature. No other great apes can do that. Chimps, gorillas and orangutans carry 3 percent body fat. Few humans could ever achieve that low of a body fat percentage unless we were near death from starvation. "The reason we're designed to [store fat is to] be able to access fat for fuel," Gundry says. "The reason why [humans] have been able to take over all parts of the world … [is] because we can cycle back and forth, having our mitochondria use fat for fuel or glucose for fuel. We're designed to shift very quickly … even within 24 hours. [Most people] no longer have that metabolic flexibility [because] we've been constantly bombarding our mitochondria with an overload of glucose as a fuel, and that really underlies, I think, most disease processes." How Intermittent Fasting Boosts Mitochondrial Flexibility One of the strategies Gundry recommends and uses to improve his own metabolic flexibility is intermittent fasting. For nearly a decade now, he's been fasting for 22 hours a day, five days a week, from January through June 1, which means he eats all his calories for the day during a two-hour window. On the weekends, he eats lunch and dinner. "I don't eat breakfast. I don't eat lunch. I eat my calories between 6 and 8 o'clock at night. I do that because my wife and I are at home at that time. If I was really smart, I would [eat] earlier in the day, but, you know, you've got to be practical in one way or another … In summer, I'll have a smoothie with some MCT oil in it, half an avocado, some romaine lettuce, spinach, half a lemon and a little bit of vanilla or stevia. Then I won't eat lunch. At dinner, same sort of thing, I try to pack all of my calories in between 6 and 8 o'clock at night … [June 1], I finished my winter fast, if you will. Now, why do I do that? [Historically], food was a rare thing to find [during the winter]. Again, our metabolic advantage is we're really good at starvation. It's what allowed us to survive. We know that during food scarcity, not only do our mitochondria rev up, but more importantly, our entire immune system and genetic monitoring basically says, 'Look, times are tough. We don't know when the next good food supply is going to come. We've got to make it through to that next period. We're going to look at every cell in our body. We're going to look at whether they're pulling their own weight. Are they odd? Are they not very fuel-efficient? We're going to jettison that. We're going to create apoptosis until these cells commit suicide.' It's kind of like if we were in a hot air balloon and we're heading for the mountain and we're going to crash, we've got to start throwing things overboard to get more lift. I think that's a fundamental principle that you've known for a number of years and that I've certainly preached for a number of years. The more we understand that that's how successful aging occurs and study successful agers, one of the things that's fascinating, particularly in an animal model, is that this intermittent fasting, this challenging [your mitochondria], is the way to do it." Although I used to do 14- to 16-hour intermittent fasts, because I felt that it was wise to increase glycogen stores prior to strength training, I have come to realize that's not true. In fact, it's counterproductive, as carbs after strength training can increase insulin and diminish IGF-1 response and blunt the anabolic stimulus. So now I am fasting for 18 to 20 hours a day and do all my strength training in a fasted state. That may sound challenging, but I can confidently assure you, from personal experience, that once you are fat adapted there are no cravings. Additionally, I recently interviewed Dr. Dale Bredesen, who wrote the book "The End of Alzheimer's: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cogntive Decline," in which he discusses how ApoE4 is a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's but ONLY if you don't intermittent fast. If you do, it will likely actually decrease your risk for the disease as its biological function is to allow us to go for longer periods of time without food. The Importance of Ketogenic Cycling Gundry also understands the importance of cycling in and out of nutritional ketosis. While your body is still burning sugar as its primary fuel, you'll want to be quite strict about not going over your net carb allotment. But once your body has regained the metabolic flexibility to burn fat, it's really important to cycle in and out or on and off. I suggest doubling, tripling or even quadrupling your net carbs two days a week, because the metabolic "magic" actually happens during the refeeding phase. As noted by Gundry: "You have to look at it evolutionarily. It really was feast or famine. When we hit large amounts of food, whether it was a fruit tree or whether it was honey or a wildebeest or a mastodon, there was no food storage system. People tend to forget that nobody walked out of their cave and said, 'What's for breakfast?' There was no refrigerator to have organic berries in every day. When we chanced upon fuel, then our beautiful design [allowed us to] eat large quantities of [food] and store it as fat. Because, very shortly, whether it was a period of drought, whether it was a period of winter, we were going to regress. I'd like people to think of circadian rhythms. Obviously, we have a 24-hour clock. We have a moon clock. We have seasonal clocks. What I like people to think of is that we have a period of every year where [we're in] a growth cycle … That's the time of growth and it's a time to reproduce. Then there's a time of involution, whether it's a tree dropping its leaves, whether it's an animal hibernating. That's the time where we kind of take stock of everything. That yin and yang, that flow that would happen every year on seasonal basis has completely been lost. We have to have periods where we consume excess calories, then we have to have periods where the exact opposite happens. Years ago, after my first book came out, I was invited to Phoenix, Arizona, by a blogger named John Kiefer. Kiefer said you should burn fat for fuel most of the time. But every week, you should have what's called "carb nite loading." He chanced upon this by accident, but he made a career out of it. I picked his brain and he picked my brain. I think he's absolutely right." Lectins Are Strongly Associated With Autoimmune Diseases of All Kinds Since we just talked about carb-loading at least once or twice a week (once you've regained the ability to burn fat for fuel), it's worth stressing that these ought to be healthy carbohydrates, and ideally lectin-free. While intermittent fasting and eating a ketogenic (high-fat, low-carb, moderate protein) diet will dramatically reduce your risk of chronic disease, lectins may still cause trouble. One of the primary issues is autoimmune diseases. "One of the things I talk about in the book that really made me hyper-focused on lectins was a friend of mine who was a very early adopter of my first program. I call him Tony in the book. Tony had really bad vitiligo. That's … where the [skin] pigmentation is lost. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease. What happens is we attack the pigment-forming cells in our skin called melanocytes. Melanocytes are actually modified neural cells. They migrate from the neural crest to our skin in embryonic development. When Tony started my program, a few months later, he came up to visit me. He said, 'You're not going to believe this. My vitiligo is gone.' I'm looking at him and I'm going, 'Wow. That's impressive.' He said, 'How did that happen?' I could have said, 'Well, this is a very anti-inflammatory diet. It's high in antioxidants.' But because I'm a researcher, I said, 'No. That's too simple.' I said, 'Melanocytes. Neural Cells. What's the target of lectins in insects? Neural cells! Could it be that lectins are why [his body is] attacking his neural cells? What I've done is I've removed lectins from his diet.' I lost track of him for a number of years. I was on a health panel in New York City two years ago. I saw him and he's covered with vitiligo again. I said, 'What happened?' He says, 'You know. I fell off [the diet]. I really need to get back on.' I said, 'This is a great experiment. Come on. Here's the list. Go for it.' We were just on a panel at Harvard two months ago. He's chairing the panel. He says, 'I've got to show you — everybody — the vitiligo's gone because I took lectins back out of my diet. It sounds silly but here's the proof.'" Molecular Mimicry One way by which lectins cause harm is through molecular mimicry. They resemble proteins in the thyroid gland, in your joint spaces and in nerves. They mimic myelin sheath proteins. The reason why lectins will in one person cause vitiligo or psoriasis, and in another attack the thyroid or cause rheumatoid arthritis, is still unknown. What is known is that one of the underlying factors in all of these disease processes is the penetration of the gut wall by lectins and their co-travelers, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), also known as endotoxins, which tend to elicit very strong immune responses. "One of the things I found in all my autoimmune patients is they had profoundly low levels of vitamin D … Interestingly, when you finally seal the gut … all of a sudden, their vitamin D levels went sky high and I could back down on the dosage. Vitamin D is essential to tell the stem cells at the bottom of the crypts in the villi to grow and divide. Without vitamin D stimulating them, they just sit there and don't repair the gut. I think plants are so intelligent, it's shocking. I think one of the plant strategies is that if you have low vitamin D, because you can't absorb it, then you can't repair your gut. You're a horrible predator. You won't reproduce. You won't walk. Vitamin D is really one of the keys to autoimmune disease. Lectins are the other key. I've been blessed by knowing thousands of autoimmune patients who I call "canaries," because they react almost instantaneously to lectins. It's interesting. Everybody has their own certain lectin or lectins that they really react to. This morning I had a woman who has rheumatoid arthritis. Her rheumatoid markers or anti-CCP3 markers have gone up. Her IL-17 had gone up. I said, 'All right. What are you doing? What's going on?' She said, 'No, no. I'm perfect. I know your list backwards and forwards.' I said, 'No. There's something.'" A Sample Case History of Crohn's Disease As it turns out, she's been eating raw (unpeeled) almonds, and almond peels contain lectins. Another patient's markers went up after going on a cashew binge, forgetting that cashews are an American bean and hence high in lectins. The answer for autoimmune patients, Gundry says, is to remove lectins from the diet and add vitamin D, which together will help "heal and seal" the gut, thereby preventing the autoimmune response. "I mention a young woman who has Crohn's disease in the book. Her well-meaning doctor at the Mayo Clinic told her that food had nothing to do with Crohn's disease. She had been cured of Crohn's disease with my program. He told her it was the placebo effect. We still laugh at that one. She ate a couple of Christmas cookies after she got off the phone with him. Of course, it was like throwing a bomb in her stomach. She had horrible cramps and diarrhea. We skyped and she said, 'Why don't doctors see this?' Like I talk about in the book, we can't see unless our eyes are open … I was lucky enough that when I met the guy who changed my life, Big Ed, who cleaned out his arteries with diet and supplements, [I had] my eyes open. I said, 'This is not chance. How did [he] do this?' Luckily, because of my evolutionary background, I was able to piece it together." Which Foods Have the Most Problematic Lectins? Lectins are found in many of our most cherished foods, such as: 2,3 ✓ Potatoes ✓ Eggplants ✓ Tomatoes ✓ Peppers ✓ Goji berries ✓ Lima beans ✓ Cashews ✓ Peanuts ✓ Sunflower seeds ✓ Chia seeds ✓ Pumpkin seeds ✓ Kidney beans ✓ Squash ✓ Corn ✓ Quinoa ✓ Soybeans ✓ Wheat ✓ Lentils Another common lectin is the A1 casein protein, found in most of today's dairy cows. I've talked a lot about the benefits of raw milk on my site. The devil's in the details however, and aside from being high in sugar, even raw dairy may cause problems if it has A1 casein. "Casein A2 is the normal protein in milk, besides whey. It's present in sheep, goats and water buffalos. But, most of the cows in the world are now casein A1 producers. They make a lectin-like protein called casein A1, which is metabolized in our gut to make beta-casomorphin, which is a very interesting thing. They can attach to the beta cell of the pancreas and incite an autoimmune attack on the pancreas. I and others are pretty convinced that [many cases] of Type 1 juvenile diabetics is because of the casein A1 in milk. I've been convinced through the years that not only is it the problem, but people who think they're lactose intolerant or that milk gives them mucus, it's the casein A1 … Raw milk is great, as long as it came from the right cow … [Some] Jerseys are A1 and [some are] A2. Holsteins are A1." More and more people are now starting to recognize this, and there are even grassroots movements pushing for A2 milk in California and Ohio. Jeni's Ice Cream gets all her milk from Snowville Creamery, which is an A2 farm. "I've actually talked to those people. They get it," Gundry says. There have even been attempts to introduce A2 milk on a larger scale, but each attempt has been crushed by the American Dairy Council, for obvious reasons. Wheat — Going Beyond Gluten Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) is another problematic lectin, found in wheat. Compared to WGA, gluten is a minor problem. According to Gundry, WGA is one of the most efficient ways to induce heart disease in experimental animals. WGA binds to insulin receptor sites. Normally, a normal hormone will dock on a receptor site, give its information and then release. Pseudo hormones like WGA, on the other hand, dock on the receptor permanently. Gundry explains: "If they hit the insulin receptor on a fat cell, they turn on lipoprotein lipase and pump sugar into the fat cell, turning it into fat constantly. In muscle cells, the exact opposite happens. They'll attach to the insulin receptor in the muscle cell [and] block insulin from delivering sugar into the cell. I see so many long-distance runners who are carboholics, who look like concentration camp survivors because they're really cachectic and sarcopenic because they block the insulin receptors in their muscles … The lectins, like WGA and galactans in beans are miraculous ways of making us store fat … [T]he only way we've ever been able to fatten an animal for slaughter is to give them grains, beans and some antibiotics. If that's how we fatten animals, that's how we fatten us. It works really well." Not All Bread Is the Same If you've ever traveled to Europe, you may have indulged in some bread and noticed you didn't experience the same type of problems you have when eating bread in the U.S. The reason for this is because the lectins are removed when you use traditional methods of raising bread, which is still popular in Europe. "Europe [has] always used traditional methods raising bread. They use yeast or sourdough. Yeast and bacteria are actually pretty good at breaking down the gluten molecule and other lectins," Gundry explains. Europe also does not permit the use of glyphosate to desiccate wheat, which has become common practice in the U.S. Glyphosate is also used on many conventional grains, including beans and flax, so it's in the animal meats we eat, it's in our baked goods, and even in wine produced in the U.S. According to Gundry, glyphosate potentiates gluten to people who are not even gluten-sensitive, and interferes with your liver's ability to manufacture the active form of vitamin D. Glyphosate also chelates important minerals, disrupts the shikimate pathway, decimates your microbiome and increases leaky gut, which allows more of the LPSs into your bloodstream. Since it works synergistically with the lectins, it really delivers a double-whammy. "[Glyphosate] hits cytochrome P450. It's one of the reasons the Europeans are so far [ahead] on health," Gundry says. "It's one of the reasons why so many of my patients can go to Europe, eat their traditional diet and think they're cured and now they can start eating bread. They come back and eat a piece of bread and, bam — the whole thing starts all over again." On Vegetarianism and Other Diets As mentioned, Gundry was a professor at Loma Linda University, a Seventh Day Adventist facility. Seventh Day Adventists are typically vegetarians, and while not an Adventist, Gundry did eat a vegetarian diet for about 15 years during his time there. "I've never been sicker in my life. I used to weigh 228 pounds despite running 30 miles a week and running half marathons on the weekend and going to the gym one hour every day, wondering why I had high blood pressure, prediabetes and heart disease … Quite frankly, we have a fabulous orthopedic department at Loma Linda, because grains are pretty doggone mischievous for that. Through the years, I've been good friends with the head of the Adventist Health Studies, a cardiologist. One of the things I've learned from following the Adventists and following Gary Fraser is that … certain animal proteins do contribute to aging. In the Adventist health study, the vegan Adventists have the longest life span. Behind them are the lacto-ovo vegetarians, then behind them are the pescetarians. Then finally, there are the real cheaters who eat chicken … It is interesting that the longest living of the Adventists, who are very long-living, are the vegans. I take care of a lot of vegans because of my association with Loma Linda. As a general rule, the vegans are some of the unhealthiest people I have met. The reason is they're grain- and bean-itarians. They are not vegetable eaters. I have nothing against a high vegetable diet … The other thing we see in the vegans is they somehow think they will convert short-chain omega-3 fats into EPA, the long-chain omega-3 fats. They absolutely and positively do not. Our brain is about 70 percent fat; 50 percent of that fat is DHA. There are beautiful longitudinal studies showing people with the highest omega-3 index have the largest brains as they age, and the largest areas of memory in the hippocampus. People with the lowest levels of omega-3 index have the most shrunken brains and the smallest areas of memory. Vegans have no excuse anymore. There's algae-based DHA." Fruit and Berries — Seasonal Treats Gundry's first rule is that what you stop eating is more important than what you start eating. "It's absolutely true," he says. "If you take away certain foods, you'll be amazed [to find] that it's certain foods that are the troublemakers." His second rule is, take care of your gut microbiome. Rule No. 3 is "fruit might be as good as candy." While he doesn't expound on the importance of burning fat for fuel in his book, that's really part of the equation. Once you're able to burn fat, fruit can be a healthy carbohydrate to add once or twice a week. "Exactly. I think part of the problem is the vast majority of Americans are insulin-resistant. One of the things that people should realize is that the modern fruit has been bred for sugar content … One of the things I ask people to do initially is give fruit the boot. Fructose is a major toxin. We take fructose directly to our liver and detoxify it into triglycerides and uric acid. It always amazes me the number of people with gout who consume more concentrated fruit, like wine or beer. Beer is one of the underlying reasons that they have gout. The other thing people should realize is that fructose is a direct renal toxin. The more fructose I can get out of people, the better. Having said that, once you get to a point where you have metabolic flexibility, I think things like berries are probably one of the best ways to carbohydrate load on the day you decided to do that … Sweet potatoes are great as well, [and] I'm a big fan of taro root. Years ago [in June] … my wife and I were at a Santa Barbara farmers market. I was taking these gorgeous organic peaches and putting them into my bag. She says, 'Hey, wait a minute. Aren't you the guy who says give fruit the boot?' I said, 'Yeah, yeah. But it's June and it's time to eat fruit.' She says, 'OK, smart guy. Let's do this. This summer, we're going to give up fruit to see what happens' … So, we gave up fruit for one summer. We didn't change anything else in our diet. My wife lost 6 pounds and I lost 8 pounds. It brought home to me that, again, our ancestors and the reason we have two-thirds of our tongue devoted to sweet taste is we are great fruit predators. Fruit was only available once a year. We utilized that fruit to gain weight for the winter … [Now] we can have it 365 days a year, but that's not normal. So, always keep that in mind." More Information To learn more, I highly recommend picking up a copy of "The Plant Paradox," especially if you've already cleaned up your diet and still struggle with excess weight and/or health problems. Certainly, anyone with an autoimmune disorder would be wise to take a closer look at lectins. It's really vital information that can help optimize your health, and that of your family. It's a great read, with the perfect balance between science and practical recommendations. If you've been following the "Fat for Fuel" approach, it's just a minor tweak. But it's a very important tweak that I wish I would have known about earlier. If I had, I would have dedicated a chapter to lectins in my book. I will however incorporate this information in my "Fat for Fuel Cookbook," which will be published this fall.
