Okay, the above is FANTASTIC. Definitely read it all!
The following is me expanding on the above for Science Fiction settings (and I suppose fantasy too).
If creating a futuristic or alien world, think less about what might "look cool" and more on what is actually practical for people (or aliens) to use.
Is the wheelchair easy to transfer into? As in move from a bed to the chair? Having arm rests that can move up and out of the way can help, leg rests that can be moved to one side to allow wheelchair to be pushed up closer, and other moveable parts.
Is it comfortable for the person? Do they need further cushioning or additions to stabilize parts of their bodies? Seatbelts to keep them in place? Tilt or reclining if unable to stay upright for long?
How will the wheelchair be transported over longer distances? Can it fold up easily?
Wheels need to be easy to push (for self-propelling chairs). This is why self-propelling chairs have a wheel design and don't something like tract wheels.
If a powered chair is needed, what type of joystick is best for maneuvering it? Is it easy to transfer in and out of without causing injuries? What is the top speed? (Don't make it too fast as that can cause injuries). Is it easy to replace the battery?
If this is a fantasy world with magic, how can magic improve the mobility of someone with a physical and/or energy-limited disease? Does magic power the wheelchair to move? Is there a joystick or some sort of activation the user does to start up the magic and control the movement of the chair?
Here's a good chart for what to consider when designing a wheelchair for a human. This can be adapted for aliens by considering the body parts of an alien in a similar manner:
Tumblr media
For an alien, think about how many appendages does the alien have and the shape/contours of the body:
Will it need arm rests for most of the upper body appendages?
What type of foot rests will they need for lower body appendages? (Is the feet or ends of appendages hooves? Human-like? webbed? Paws? Octopus-like? It can help to draw the appendage then draw ways to support it so it doesn't drag on the ground or get tangled up in other parts of the wheelchair.)
Does the alien have wings? If it can't fly due to wing injuries or defects, will they need a back designed with a holding spot for wings with cushioning for the back itself? (Try to avoid making "holes" for the wings since in an accident the surrounding parts of the wheelchair could collapse and slice the wings off.)
Does it have tails? Is there a holding spot for the tail that cushions it or allows movement? (Try to avoid designing a hole for the tail because in case of an accident, the back of the wheelchair could slice that tail off, which sounds painful).
How much core strength does the alien have? Such as in the torso or within its head supports (such as a neck)? Will it braces for those parts to hold it up?
How much strength in its core (torso), appendages, etc. does the alien have? If it's missing strength in those areas, then what support is needed? Will a powered version be needed if lacking the strength to self-propel?
This isn't comprehensive of course. Mostly questions to get people thinking.
Also, it's fine to ask me questions about this in asks. I love to worldbuild and talk shop like that. (Just don't ask me questions about how or why I am disabled. Focus on questions about worldbuilding and crafting characters. Thanks.)
Thanks for reading. And thank you to the OP for the awesome guide for present-day wheelchairs!

A guide to designing wheelchair using characters!
I hope this helps anyone who's trying to design their oc using a wheelchair, it's not a complete guide but I tried my best! deffo do more research if you're writing them as a character

Writer's tips: Mothers
There are more types of Mothers than just 'Sweet, Maternal, Doting ( ꈍᴗꈍ)' and 'Mean, Abusive, Evil (눈‸눈)'. Parenting is a spectrum and not every good or bad mom is the same.
If said mother is going to be killed in order to be used as backstory material for your Main Character, consider giving them a defining personality or real connection with their child. Even if they're going to die, they should at least feel alive before you axe them for the sake of a tragic backstory.
Pregnancy does not instantly turn a woman into a weak, helpless object that can barely stand on their own. Childbirth does not turn a woman into a perfect kind happy mother. Characters who become Mothers tend to end up losing most of their canon personality and become a stock mother character for their Future Main Character Child, consider the Character's actual personality when interacting with their own child, can help with making their bond more unique and even more heartbreaking when you murder them for backstory material. ; )

Why put the accountability on them? Especially when they have proved that they are either not worthy of your trust or lack basic sensibilities. If you are tired of childish behaviour, then step away from childish people. Just how much will you try to school them? If you are tired of late night thirst trap texts asking “do you wanna come over tomorrow?” don’t respond. Text them the next day in the afternoon and say “I’m good, thanks for asking. You?”. If they reply saying “point taken” you can continue talking. My point really is though that at this stage of your life, you need to downsize  — downsize on the bullshit, on the dissatisfying, on the unnecessary. Would have loved to not have to use these adjectives for people but what to do? It is what it is. Petites misères de la vie humaine. Little miseries of human life. But really, though, you have the power. Take charge. Not of others but of your own life. You are not a dead fish to go with the flow. And you are not a disinterested bystander in your own life. You are not somebody that things just happen to. You are many things, but you are not passive. Never passive. Active voice, active choices.

When Porter Robinson said, ". . . What I'm always trying to do in the studio is I'm trying to write my own favorite song." It reminds me of how I'm always in my room, trying to write my own favorite story.
We all have something to create as our own favorite. Favorite song, favorite drawing, favorite painting, favorite story. . . Something to love so deeply because it means so much to us and serves us a thing to hold on to when life pushes us off the edge, keeping us grounded.
Love and appreciate your creations. Nobody else can love it as much as you do;)

I love reading reader insert fics where the reader ended up with a secret kid with the romantic pairing and they meet years later. But in these reader inserts a lot of times he recognizes the kids is his based on how they look. But here’s the deal. I, the reader, am brown. My kid will have brown skin. They will have dark hair and dark eyes. The features of a lot of characters I read about would either be cancelled out with my genes or they’re traits that we already share so it wouldn’t make sense that they could recognize the kid as their through shared traits.
Also, the kids are always given the most generic white name… I don’t mind having to read y/k or y/d or y/s or whatever you have to come up with to make inclusion work.
Just, I guess, keep this in mind when writing reader inserts where the reader has kids.

we were talking about equivocation (manipulating certain words to completely change an argument) in my critical thinking class and we were looking at these two headlines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the left is a headline from CNN. the right is a headline from Fox News. both are aggressively biased towards isreal (as per usual for the mainstream american press that is profiting off of this war). i know we talk a lot a lot about bias in headlines and in content, but i feel like its incredibly important when something somewhat new happens.
while Fox is more transparent about it's bias, both headlines completely ignore that the majority of people dead are civilians. beyond that, this is classified as a terrorist attack, and is praised in american media.
anyway, things to think about.
