“Hey, I heard that a new ice cream place opened up recently and apparently it’s really good. Wanna go there?” You ask Mark. “There’s a new ice cream place? How come I didn’t know that..”

“Probably because you’re always thinking about chemistry!” You snicker, nudging his arm. Mark chuckles, nodding to your words. “Yo, I mean, you’re not wrong.” He replies, a little smile on his face as he turns his eyes from the street to you.

That smile… and that gaze of his made you feel flustered; you made eye contact with him. The way his dark brown eyes met your eyes sent a shiver down your spine. His eyes were the prettiest shade of brown ever and you could get lost in them at any given moment. The way his smile was the absolute cutest, even if it was a tiny smile.

You quickly turned your head away, your eyes meeting the concrete beneath you. Every step you took matched with Mark’s steps, and your shoulders would lightly brush against each other. You didn’t understand why you felt so.. shy around him? It felt like you almost had a crush on him, but you shook away those thoughts, after all, your heart is set on Taeyong, not Mark.

“Oh! Here we are.” You look up at the ice cream parlor. The fairy lights illuminating the dark street you were walking on. The parlor was very cutesy looking. The outside was colored in a baby pink color, and there were decorative candies placed on the walls.

You walk inside with Mark, and the vibes you are getting from his place are just excellent and very cozy. ‘So let’s go see the stars’ by BOYNEXTDOOR played from the speakers, but the music wasn’t loud or quiet. It was just the perfect volume and you could tell whoever controlled the music had good taste. “Dang, this place is nice, yo,” Mark says, glancing around the inside. The ice cream parlor got his approval just from the way it looked.

“Welcome, welcome! How may I help you two on this fine evening?” The worker approaches the front, waving to you and Mark. “Yes, hello, uh,” You greet the worker back… just a bit awkwardly.

You scratch the side of your neck as you look down at all the flavors. All of them make your mouth water. “Can I get.. 2 scoops of vanilla and..”

“Mark, what flavor do you want?” You ask Mark, looking at him, though, you were trying your best to avoid eye contact as you didn’t want your thoughts to run wild again. “I’ll get 2 scoops of watermelon.” He says.

“You two are a couple right? I can tell by the way you two were walking so close to each other when approaching the place.” The worker says as they hand you your ice cream, winking at you and Mark; the both of you getting flustered.

You and Mark take a glance at each other, “Ah.. we’re just—” As Mark was about to say you two are just friends, which would pain him to say as he desired that you two would become more than that, “No need to be awkward around me. Couples are always coming here, I’m used to it.” The worker cuts him off, a chuckle escaping their lips.

“Right...” You take out your wallet to pay for the ice cream but— Mark stops you. “I’ll pay. I’m the one who asked you to hang out anyway.” Mark pulls your hand down, letting his hand linger on yours just for a moment.

Mark takes out his wallet, paying the worker the needed amount. Though you could tell the worker was shipping you two hard, they had a cheeky smile on their face the entire time.

“Thank you, come again lovebirds!” The worker says with a wide smile on their face as they wave goodbye to you two.

You two were sitting on a bench, your shoulders touching. You just finish your ice cream, throwing away the wrapper that was wrapped around the cone. You turn to Mark, who is still eating his watermelon-flavoured ice cream. “You’re finished with yours already?” He asks as he notices your empty hands.

His eyes move from your hands to your face, and his gaze fixates on your face— his eyebrows scrunching as he leans in closer to your face. Your heart skipped a few beats when he leaned in— you were confused about why until...

“You’ve got something near your mouth.” He says, pointing to the spot where you had something. “Oh-!” You wiped your face with your finger, but it didn’t feel like you wiped anything— looking at your finger afterward confirms that.

“Here,” Mark places his fingers under your chin, raising his thumb to wipe the spot off of your face. At that moment— your heart had quite literally felt like it was gonna stop.

You felt his soft breath right on your face, his gentle fingers under your chin, and his thumb wiping some leftover ice cream on your face. Every single one of his movements was so delicate and pleasant. Even from the slightest touch of his, you felt like you could melt away immediately. Your eyes catch a glimpse of the way his eyes are narrowed and focused on your face. The way the midnight blue colored sky and its stars lit up Mark’s face made you blush. You couldn’t deny your cheeks flushing a light pink color.

Mark pauses for a moment once he wipes the stain away; both of your eyes land on the others, though you feel your eyes sneak down to his lips; they look so soft and oh, so kissable. You could feel yourself leaning in closer to his face...

But it’s ruined once the realization hits you of what you're doing and you inhale sharply— Mark backs away, grabbing the wrapper around his cone to wipe his finger from the ice cream. If it wasn’t for you ending the moment, you wouldn’t have been able to control yourself from kissing him, though perhaps it’s better you didn’t kiss him.

Because you like Taeyong, he’s the perfect guy in your mind and he’s the one who you would love to be with and want to be with but, it seems like a specific organ in your body doesn’t agree with your head and mind.

"Why am I getting emotional?" Stella laughed, clasping her hands to her face as her eyes welled with unexpected tears.

"Stell," Harry laughed softly, leaning to fold his fingers around one of her wrists that were still held up to shield her face. "It's weird, isn't it?"

"I just can't believe how much time has gone by, it's a little bit sad." She sputtered, her face contorted slightly with emotions. "But happy at the same time." She looked to him while running her fingers under her eyes. Letting her head fall back into the grass beneath them, she sighed dramatically, letting her breath escape through her mouth. She took deep breaths to try and pull herself together.

Harry leaned back on his elbows, a soft smile on his face as he stared at the moon displayed so clearly in the dark sky above them. He thought about all the experiences this field had given him, to Stella and to their friends. Friends they'd known since they'd started secondary school. He chuckled again at Stella's soft sniffles beside him.

"Don't laugh at me, you sadist." She snapped, tongue firmly in her cheek.

"It's alright, you keep sobbing over there. I'm enjoying the crisp twilight evening." She rolled her eyes but held up a hand to extend to him, which he accepted, linking their fingers and stroking the back of hers with his thumb.

There they were, 28 and 29 years old, reminiscing and mourning the youth that had barely left them. But it was hard to not yearn for the past every now and then. Harry thought back to when he'd told Stella that he was going to audition for the X Factor, everything since then had been a complete blur, with details he wouldn't be able to remember even if he tried to.

"You're off again soon."

"Yeah, next week." He sighed, one hand across his belly, some skin peeking out from where his jumper had ridden up. He smiled thinking about touring again - it was his absolute favourite thing to do, without a doubt.

"Think Ally's little nieces are coming to see you in Cardiff. Her sister's Welsh, she said they're already working on their banners." Stella mentioned her work friend, making Harry chuckle softly and glance her way with eyebrows raised. "At least we know theirs won't be rude ones."

"You never know, I've just about seen it all."

"I respect it, to be honest, some of them are really creative." Stella said, rolling slightly to the side to look at him properly and tapping a hand on his chest. "And honestly, when you write songs like Watermelon Sugar and Cinema what do you expect. Women are horny, too."

"Oh, trust me, if anyone knows that it's me." He scoffed, smirking in her direction before glancing up at the sky again. He sighed, dropping all the way back to rest his head back on the arm that wasn't already occupied holding her hand. "Shame my missus is always 'on nights'."

"I am on nights!" She said rising a bit to look at his face next to her. "Not always, admittedly, but if you think I'm gonna roll over at three in the morning just to get you off on FaceTime you've got another thing coming." She punctuated the sentence by flopping back down onto her back. He brought her hand to his mouth to press a few kisses to the back of it.

They laid in silence again for a while, Stella stared at the rough-looking, wooden swing set that lived in the corner of the expansive field. She could almost see herself, Hannah and Roxanne sitting and swinging slightly as they tried cigarettes for the first time. She rolled her lips into her mouth as she remembered coughing up half a lung after the first drag.

The image melted away to morph into her sitting with Harry as they talked about his X Factor audition, how it went really well, and how he 'could really have a chance, babe.' She watched him hold her 16-year-old hands and tell her that he'd think about her every day that he would be gone and promise that he'd be back to take her to prom.

Harry kept his gaze on the moon above them, unable to stop the thoughts from creeping into his head about their next steps. He knew that Stella needed more than what he was currently able to give her but selfishly, he couldn't imagine being the one to make the decision to walk away. He was about to leave again, for months. Albeit some of it would be in the UK but with Stella working shifts they wouldn't be able to see each other until the tour was truly over.

Where was this all going to end up? They weren't getting any younger and Harry's career had arguably seen its best year to date in 2023. But what if this was its peak? What if this was what everything had led up to and then, that's it? Did he want to come home and settle down? Did he want to go ring shopping and get down on one knee in front of the only woman he'd ever been with? Did he want to admit that it was all coming to an end and become just some 30-something-year-old guy? A husband? A father?

But then, what if this was just the beginning? What if Harry's House was the catalyst to his tenure in this business? Opportunities were continuing to roll in and if he didn't take them now, would they still be there? If he did take them, would Stella still be there?

These were the thoughts that plagued him and they were becoming far more stubborn and continuous.

Sometimes he'd lay in bed at night and think about all the days he'd spent rushing around, the days where he couldn't really be present. Days of precious youth he'd never get back. But who was truly present when they were young? When new days felt as promised as the grass promises to grow and the wind promises to blow. When you feel as if you'll live forever. His entire 20s had been fast and furious, he was only briefly reminded of what slowing down felt like during the lockdowns of 2020.

In One Direction, he was invincible - literally the hottest, youngest thing in the music industry. In everyone's eyes, he could do no wrong. He had cars, houses, and the world at his feet. When it came to women, there were endless options. Something he'd never even imagined for himself. While the other boys had enjoyed a revolving door of girls - something he'd been tempted by many a time - he had kept a relatively healthy relationship with a gorgeous, loyal, funny, smart and caring partner who he could trust and adore.

The shit first hit the fan when Stella had begun to pull away. That was the first time he'd become aware of his own mortality. Of his choices and the power they held. Time had suddenly felt very fleeting and tight. She'd graduated from her midwifery course and was really getting her teeth stuck into the reality of 12-hour shifts and the real-life wake-up call of forging a path for herself. A career.

When she'd stopped answering his FaceTime calls after shows and started declining his offers of joining him on tour, it was the first time his fast-forwarded life came to a shuddering halt. It felt like he was Peter Pan and he was living out the moment he realised his Wendy had grown up without him.

For now, they were a little more settled in their arrangement. Stella missed him when he was away but she enjoyed having her own life. She had her own friends, she was thriving in her rewarding job and was close to her family. But in moments like this, led in the field they'd had their first kiss in, the field they'd had their prom after-party in, the field they'd snuck bottles of warm cider to and drunkenly kissed until they couldn't breathe. Their true home turf. Every dose of nostalgic nausea came washing over Stella to the point she couldn't help but tear up.

She thought about the teenage girl who used to live in Holmes Chapel. She was vibrant and nervous and people-pleasing. She was excited about the future but terrified of failing. She experienced all-consuming love far too early and got hurt more than a few times, and she hurt back in return. She experienced a level of fame and attention that she never really wanted and experienced hatred and vitriol when she was still learning who she was and who she wanted to be. But she did it all, because she was in love.

"It's all been worth it, hasn't it?" Stella turned over to face Harry, leaning up on her elbow. He rolled to lean over her and shuffled closer, putting a palm to her cheek and bringing his lips to press a long kiss to hers. Pulling back, he tucked some hair behind her ear and tapped her cheek lightly with his fingers. She smiled back, a hand curved around his wrist.

"Yeah... I think so."

2023 wrapped: kdrama edition!

taking a page from @dangermousie, here's a list of all the kdramas ive watched this year, in order from least liked to most liked! because i dont have a spotify wrap-up to share :'D

overall i didnt watch too many kdramas this year, and finished less. kind of a "meh" kdrama year for me overall (with 1-2 exceptions). with that in mind, full disclosure that i didnt love a ton of what i watched this year in kdramaland:

we barely knew ye: ones i dropped only a few eps in

sweet home 2. dropped after ep 2. direction it went in is v much not my thing, my fave surviving characters were either killed off or put on the bench, and im not that motivated to see what happens next. might jump back into the franchise if word-of-mouth on s3 is good, we'll see

moon in the day. first ep was actually great and i enjoyed it a lot!! but im not doing cancer storylines rn so that killed momentum. may try this one again later

king the land. watched the first ep. simply did not vibe.

death's game. ditto ^

black knight. i LOVE a good dystopian scifi. this was not that. i was really bored after the first ep and didnt bother with the rest

my dearest. i watched the first ep and liked it, but just wasnt in the mood/wasn't immediately hooked. i'm going to give this one another try when i hit the Angsty Sageuk craving again

dramas i watched at least half of

6. twinkling watermelon.

it's pretty wild to put what i believe is the current #1 show on mydramalist as my bottom pick for the year, especially since it's written by my favorite screenwriter, but here we are. this one is far from objectively the worst drama but it's here because it made me the most mad!! the female lead and second male leads were both off-putting and selfish to me, and the whole drama i was actively rooting for ryeoun's earnest and endearing male lead and shin eun soo's underwritten second female lead to escape and have mother/son adventures on their own away from the rest of everyone else

5. arthdal chronicles: sword of aramun.

sigh. i was a big believer/supporter of this season, even with all of the recasts. but despite a few moments of brilliance, it was overall a slog to watch and just kind of joyless. too much time spent on the ago tribe, too many nonsensical victories and deus ex machina coincidences, and the bag was very much fumbled with some of the characters (particularly saya, who was to me the most interesting character in s1 and you KNOW ljk could have rocked that ruthlessness). positive standouts were kim ok bin flawlessly scene-chewing as taealha and lee joon ki working what he was dealt

4. worst of evil.

adored this drama for the first 2/3rds! it was gritty, neo-noir that reminded me a lot of the old school hong kong crime films like infernal affairs. lots of style, great acting, messy and flawed characters. but the last arc/ending was a boring dud for me. still very much enjoyed the ride up to that point though!

3. perfect marriage revenge.

so! much!! fun!!! just. full commitment to making a show as gloriously makjang/soap operay as it could get and it was a blast watching because of it. made on pocket lint for a budget but it rocked what it had and a special shoutout to lee min young's absolutely fantastically camp evil stepmother. the excitement died down a little toward the end, but still a good time overall

2. the glory, part 2.

a satisfying ending to a really excellent first half. love that the female lead just got to execute revenge and there was no moral or sanctimonious hangups about it. enjoyed the way the ending was set up as "the adventure continues," and all in all this was a really solid and enjoyable dark drama! only thing that was kind of a bummer is that the time split between airing the first and second halves killed the momentum a little, but that's entirely netflix fuckery and not the fault of the show

moving

hands-down the best kdrama i watched this year, and possibly my favorite kdrama ever. i didnt plan to watch this one because im sick of superhero everything, but the cast got me wanting to at least try it and omg im glad i did. great acting from literally everyone, wild action scenes, and just beautiful characters and dynamics across every level. the family narratives are so, so good and the whole show is expertly grounded in the concept of planting seeds so your children can see flowers. please give this one a try if you're on the fence about it!

Favorite ship: juwon and jihee from moving absolutely destroyed me in the like 3 eps they were in, so they win this one. he's a gangster who gets the shit kicked out of him for a living and loves stories with happy endings. she's a weary but always brave sex worker (coded, but still) who decides to trust a lonely man crying in the street. i never thought a motion-sensor light could wreck me the way theirs did. "you have worth to me, and i have worth to you."

Favorite FL: song hye kyo's dong eun in the glory just barely edges out han hyo joo's mihyun in moving. song hye kyo needs to play, like, all the villains and anti-heroes ASAP because that's been the most fun ive had watching her. she took on a dark character and rocked it

Favorite ML: juwon from moving, definitely. to quote my older post:

Moving really said hi this is Juwon. he has scars from gunshots all down his arm. he opened a chicken restaurant. he’s a gangster. he loves pro wrestling because the good guys win. he tried to rip out his own galbladder to prove a point. he’s a proud girl dad. he is unkillable. he stands in the street and cries.

Favorite 2FL: lee min young's incredible, over the top, villainous camp queen lee jung hye from perfect marriage revenge was just so much fun to watch and she ate every single scene she was in. 10/10 would watch her throw lawn chairs in a ballgown all day

Favorite 2ML: i would die for bongseok from moving. precious sunshine child who deserves only the best

Best Cast: im a broken record, but moving. so many characters with such great depth given to them and this was truly an ensemble show A+++

Best WTF: yura eating her paternity results in perfect marriage revenge!!
