Prompt / Castles in the Clouds

The guillotine dropped with a whizzing and wet, angry thunk. The girl shivered, waiting her turn on the platform. She tried to look around her, the jeering faces, the red caps, the noise and an older man praying beside her. She knew she had to be brave.

But in that moment, the dust and the neighing of horses, the soldiers, the beat of their drums, the sound of the blade being lifted, the sound of the body removed, it spun and it tipped off its axis.

She felt a hand on her elbow. It dragged her, stumbling, forward. She couldn’t see through the tears.
