I think I have two sides of minds while watching this show. One is to enjoy watching characters and their narratives, the other is to cringe every time they said stupid things like trying to depose the crown prince(or the Queen who has 4 other sons) because he is sick??? or name royal concubines' sons to be the heir instead of the crown prince's son who is next line of throne??? Wtf they are doing...really...

Since there seem to be no horror kdramas in sight this autumn season, I guess I shall have to do with another autumn stable that is somewhat sad, dark or introspective period dramas, and I hope that Under the Queen's Umbrella can at least give me that.
Dry, or even humorous takes in palace life is not something that's everyone's cup of tea unless you are a big fan of the sageuk genre (which I am). So many sageuks are ether too light and fluffy and focus too heavily on the romance that the other plot elements feels so week and watered down that they don't have any bite to it or almost too dry in it's approach to the politics that the pacing and characters sort of suffer because of it.
Aside from the very last episodes of The Red Sleeve and then delicious tragedy that was Bloody Heart I have been less than impressed by the sageuks we have been served this year. Although I must admit that I have not yet watched Alchemy of Souls... mainly because it just looked like any other fantasy romance drama and those have kinda never worked for me. But maybe I shall try to binge it before part two comes out in December.
I have been in a kdrama slump for a bit now, not really enjoying Good Job or Little Women and not really been in the mood for anything. But that's pretty much just me towards anything in general these days. I just don't feel like watching anything. But Under the Queen's Umbrella has always been that on kdrama on the horizon that I have had my eyes on and been excited about. If I was going to try, despte my slump, to watch any kdrama it was going to be that one. And only that one.
What drew me to the Queen's Umbrella was the cast, the fact that it was a women lead and seemed to be a woman focused kdrama and that it was said to be a dark comedy. And a darker, over the top, humorous take on the palace life and court politics or just is something that I quite enjoy. Especially if the drama can still feel very grounded in it's historical setting and still give a somewhat authentic take on that this was how life was for these people in those days, no matter how ridiculous it may look now. This mattered greatly to these people.
Or at least give that illusion, even if some of the laws of the world aren't truly how they were in true historical time. I don't really watch period dramas for their historical accuracies, but do enjoy the illusions and the historical setting. And the story needs to feel grounded in it’s own universe to work.
So far I think that the drama is more somber than humorous. I am not totally seeing the dark humor seeping through, even if I do think it does take a lighter, humorous angle at certain things. It doesn't feel that darker than the humor in The Red Sleeve for example... which wasn't really described as dark comedy. It's just not slapstick. It just feels like a humor in a normal, somewhat serious sageuk drama to me.
When I think dark period drama comedy I think of something like The Great tbh, or even just a dark humored kdrama I think of Psychopath Diary. And this drama is not giving me that... yet at least.
But I adore the little bits of palace life for these women and how they navigate the court and all the rules that comes with it, as a woman. That was something that I really enjoyed in both The Red Sleeve and Bloody Heart and that's just a focal point in these stories that I greatly enjoy and seek out. And I can't wait to see more of it. That truly does hook me into the story. Because two episodes in I care about the Queen and her needs and struggles to keep everything together when it seems like everything is somewhat unraveling around her.
All the different princess do blend together for me at this point, and most of their moms. It's a normal thing at this stage in sageuks (and just in general... irl I don't really remember faces or names unless I interact with people a lot and it's embarrassing) and I don't really care about most of their stories.
I would like some spunky and not so spunky but interesting princesses as well, just to sort of add another layer of the female perspective within the palace since we have the queen, the dowager queen and then the concubines and some of the maids that follow those people. But there looks like that may be a princess there, trapped in a body of a prince, which is a storyline that I hope the drama treats with respect and doesn't fumble and use just to add more drama to the main characters life.
I suspected that might be the case, or perhaps that there was some gay sex or something going on behind close doors in the palace based on the reaction of the queen... and because with these many princess... at least one of them had to be queer.
As always these sageuks are beautiful to look at. One of the many reasons why I am drawn to them and just period dramas in general are the pretty costumes and the pretty people wearing them, the ambiance that period dramas often just carry with it (and there is no better time to watch sad, somber period drama but on a rainy autumn evening) and this season is just perfect for that and the pretty pretty scenery.
We may see these palaces and these hanboks and all of that thousand times over in every period drama, but damn I still audible gasp at my tv whenever they manage to capture that scenery in all it's beauty on screen. I eat it up every damn time. Is it as stunning as The Red Sleeve and Bloody Heart? no... but I do enjoy the pretty pretty scenery and some prettily filmed shots.
