Y'know maybe it's too early to think about this but if we do get another smash game I really want Link to be wearing the archaic tunic with his hair down and have a completely new moveset based on the arm. And for this Zelda to also be wearing the archaic clothes and fight with her light/time powers like she deserves. And this Ganondorf to also have a new moveset that isn't Cap'n Falcon 2 Electric Boogaloo. And for the love of god add Impa to the game already.

A SEMI-REASONABLE 40 CHARACTER SMASH ROSTER

An exercise in indulgence and egoism, and posted as the same.

THE RULES:

1. Characters shall be semi-reasonable! Beatoriche I love you but this needs to be a roster composed of characters who could conceivably actually make it into Smash. They should be from video games, and ideally ones people care about.

2. Characters shall be gender balanced! I separated my picks into four categories: GUYS, GIRLS, and CREATURES AND CHARACTERS, TYPICALLY PLAYER, OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER (like Pikachu or the Animal Crossing Villager). the number of GUYS shall be EQUAL TO OR LESSER THAN the number of GIRLS. I set this restriction on myself and so should you.

3. Characters shall be 40 of them! but you could tell that from the title.

GUYS

MARIO - You have to have this guy. also like it's been like 20+ years since Sunshine can we not give him something other than FLUDD?

DONKEY KONG, LUIGI, NESS, BOWSER, FOX, WARIO - You also have to have these guys. I cut Captain Falcon, as we already had Fox as a Smash original character.

LINK - Someday we will be able to put Link in the CHARACTERS OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER list, but not yet.

KING DEDEDE - Sakurai made this so his faves get a little extra attention. I claim that same right.

SNAKE - Updated for MGSV, naturally.

SONIC (Palette Swap: SHADOW) - I really really don't care about these guys. I kind of actively hate them actually. but they deserve to be here, even if all their moves are the same (turning into a ball and the ball flies at you).

CLOUD - The iconic Final Fantasy pretty boy. Would I prefer Lightning? yeah. but this is the semi-realistic roster.

PHOENIX WRIGHT - I know, preaching to the crowd here. This guy is a tumblr darling behind only his boyfriend Miles Edgeworth. But they've put him in fighting games before! And he totally has a moveset, right? Presenting his badge as a jab, shooting OBJECTION and TAKE THAT! (HOLD IT! is a grab!), submitting paperwork and random items hoping and praying that they'll be accepted as evidence...

Barely missed the cut: Sans Undertale, Sekiro, Shulk, Solaire, Paper Mario, Sora.

GIRLS

SAMUS - You have to have this girl.

PEACH/DAISY - Ideally Daisy would get Luigified (this is the very technical term for when a Smash character starts out as a clone and then gets differentiated) as the Mario Sports Game Representation. But that probably wouldn't happen. Peach is fine. kind of

ZELDA (Breath of the Wild/Tears Of The Kingdom) - The opposite of the Smash Ultimate dynamic. Smash Lscholar Link is old-school Link; Zelda is newer Zelda. Like in Hyrule Warriors she fights using runes on her magic ipad/wii u pad/nintendo switch game console. Bombs, Ice Block, Ultrahand - and the ability to Recall all of them, sending them flying backwards along their trajectories when the attack is reinput. An evil zoner but let's be honest: she already is. Maybe she has a "take a picture" that can stun?

ISABELLE, ROSALINA - both need reworks. Isabelle in particular has the potential to be a Kirby for new players - but hitting with her is so hard that most try her for a round and play Toon Link instead.

BAYONETTA - No notes.

HORNET (Hollow Knight: Silksong) - Clear moveset, fan favorite, zero questions.

D.VA (Overwatch and, fine, Overwatch 2) - The single most popular Overwatch character by far, and a much needed female heavyweight character. Would translate pretty well to Smash as a pushy zippy tank-type.

EDELGARD VON HRESVELG (Fire Emblem: Three Houses/Three Hopes) - big smashy axe, avowed militant atheist, Vriska, Fire Emblem rep. Smash Lsclr's Ike. Slow but dangerous, with surprising range, much like Byleth; unlike Byleth she is an actual character. also her axe twirl has to be a taunt. Also she's canonically bisexual. which would make her the second bisexual smash character after Snake, and the third in my heart after Cloud Strife (Byleth isn't real).

REIMU HAKUREI (Touhou) - Iconic rep from possibly the single most important indie game series.

CHUN LI (STREET FIGHTER) - Honestly surprised they put Ryu in Smash. I feel like if you asked anybody to name a Street Fighter character Chun Li would be first?

UNDYNE (Undertale) - Fine. Susie (Deltarune) is also acceptable.

VI or JINX or SOME LEAGUE OF LEGENDS GIRL (LoL) - as with Sonic I don't care for these but they have undeniably earned their places. Arcane was better than it should have been and I really hope Mel Medarda survives into s2.

SABER (Fate/Stay Night) - It's Saber! I know this seems like a meme pick but I really do think she deserves to be here.

Barely missed the cut: Karlach or Shadowheart, The Silent, Arle Nadja, Vriska

CREATURES AND CHARACTERS, TYPICALLY PLAYER, OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER (like Pikachu or the Animal Crossing Villager)

PIKACHU - You have to have this thing. Brand recognition on par with Santa Claus or Jesus. A creature for sure, even if its tail indicates biological gender.

KIRBY - This is technically a Guy but in practice this is a creature. also I have one less Guy than Girl so I could put him there, but I chose not to.

YOSHI/BIRDO - Put a trans woman in Smash. She's just a Yoshi reskin and that's fine.

MARTH/LUCINA - The other Fire Emblem rep. Why does Awakening get like three characters? may have to make Marth a bit less floaty to make this work but they really should consolidate these two.

POKEMON TRAINER (Charizard, Ivysaur, Squirtle) - good on nintendo for making it possible to play pokemon trainer as a guy or girl.

POKEMON TRAINER 2 (Gengar, Gardevoir, Lucario) - We have so many pokemon and here's three more. swap out one of your choice for Jigglypuff or Mewtwo or Mimikyu or Greninja or whatever, as long as your substitution isn't from Kanto. This pokemon trainer is a bit more of a tryhard, and wears darker clothing. also their pokemon are category balanced: one is a guy, one is a girl, and one is a creature.

INKLING - Kind of a creature and definitely not of either cardinal gender. these kids squids are nonbinary. A good addition to smash; may they goop and bloop for many games to come.

Wii FIT TRAINER - Mix in Wii Sports and Ring Fit and whatever else.

ANIMAL CROSSING VILLAGER/MINECRAFT STEVE AND ALEX/PACMAN AND MS PACMAN - CHARACTERS OF EITHER CARDINAL GENDER

NOAH AND MIO XENOBLADE (XENOBLADE 3) - Like Pyra and Mythra but less gross. Mio has faster short range chakram attacks and mobility; Noah has slower harder-hitting moves.

THE ASSASSIN (Assassin's Creed) - Snake represents Solid, Naked, and Venom; why can't The Assassin be Altair, Ezio, and whoever else?

Barely missed the cut: Duck Hunt, Toad/Toadette.

Polar Pass ~ Finally, the Ideal Roster

Excluding what I have already discussed, there are 16 characters I would change. Starting with 3rd party characters and the Ultimate DLC: Crash/Cortex for (and Coco/Nina because I got rid of Chrom because I got rid of Roy) Pyra/Mythra and Rayman for Min Min. I have already gone over these characters but I'll add some more points. We already had Shulk representing Xenoblade, we did not need more. No one cares about Arms and replacing Min Min with Rayman makes a lot of sense due to reach of their limbs. Throughout this list a lot of replacements are going to be with some similar (and also a lot won't be). For other 3rd party reps I have taken out all of the Mii fighters. The Mii fighters are lame and the Wii series of games was already represented by Wii Fit Trainer, who is a character I don't like to play as but is a very unique addition to the roster. Instead I put in Professor Layton and Bomberman, because I love Professor Layton and I love my friend who suggested Bomberman, and Raiden. Not from Mortal Kombat, although another good choice, but from MGS. MGS kicks ass and I think a tactical super soldier guerilla warfare guy works against a robotic ninja. There needs to be more unique weapon based characters in Smash like spearmen, bombers, and cybernetic ninjas. Raiden is the second most unique character and star of his own game and that's why he's in. For Pokemon: Gardevoir for Jigglypuff, Smeargle for Pichu, and Oshawott for Roy (haha). You can keep Mewtwo, I understand how important they and that first Gen of Pokemon are. Keeping along with replacing Melee characters, Eggplant Man for Dr. Mario and Krystal for Falco. Capitalising on the Mario Movie and the fact that Wrecking Crew already has a stage in smash, and is much better than all the other one off games on NES, is why Eggplant Man is in. Krystal has an ice spear and Falco is mean. Fox, Krystal, and especially Wolf are also way more sexy than Falco. Last two 3rd party reps: Tetris for Isabelle and Eggman for Bowser Jr. . I'm sorry, Isabelle is still lame and Tetris is the best selling game. I do not have to defend myself here. Eggman? Why him above the rest? Simple, everyone else is too much like Sonic. Same thing with MGS, why put in The Boss or Liquid Snake when Raiden is really unique? Tails, Knuckles, Shadow? Too much like Sonic. Eggman is the most distinct and a good replacement for Bowser Jr. who relys on tech. Also, despite making up a lot of villains in platformers, there's not a single mad scientist in Smash (except for Cortex now but shhh). It's Eggman! Now, I'm sorry Mario/Yoshi/Wario, I'm sorry Metroid, I'm sorry Pikmin. No new reps for you. Paper Mario, Shy Guy, Ashley, Chozo, Bulborb. All great choices, the honourable mentions, but I don't think anyone else deserves more reps as bad as Zelda. Darunia for Young Link, Midna for Toon Link, Hestu for Robin, and Tingle for Corrin. Hey, did you know, FE has only sold twice as much as Pikmin? Did you know FE's best selling game has sold a comparable amount to the best selling Pikmin game? I understand, numbers isn't causal to influence and Metroid has similar sales to FE. But 6 is too many. Zelda deserves them WAY more. But why these characters? They are a good representation of species or beloved or really weird. Gorons and Koroks are really cool and show how much more there is to Zelda than elves and a Captain Falcon Clone. Midna is the best companion in any Zelda game. And Tingle is Tingle! There you have it, a roster that gives Zelda and Pokemon its do credits, has very a reasonable amount of 3rd party reps, gives a little more to MGS and Sonic, and shows off a more interesting side of Nintendo's history. WarioWare Characters Ranked by How Likely They'd Get Into Mario Kart

(There's no MoveIt! spoilers here, don't worry, but I do reference Get It Together's postgame and Gold's ending)

Thought I'd do some fun speculation thing on how likely some of the more notable WarioWare characters would get into good 'ol Mario Kart. They don't often appear in Mario spinoffs in the first place, but hey, there's a first time for everything. I'm going off the assumption of a rule of three Wario characters (well, two given what is likely one of the characters is just a skin) getting in and no more, maybe two.

Biker outfit Wario: I think this would be almost a guarantee if we get WarioWare rep. His outfit is strongly tied to the series, and it'd look out of place for there to be rep but you only have yellow overalls Wario. Plus, a biker outfit makes sense for Mario Kart!

Jimmy T: Medium chances, I'd say. He's an iconic character that's been there since day one and has plenty of fans, but compared to others on here, he has tough competition.

Mona: High! Another iconic WarioWare character, she has plenty more popularity and love, not to mention she already drives in a bike and all.

Dribble and Spitz: This is kind of a two-parter, but if they were to come together (which I think is possible, just have Spitz on Dribble's back or something) I'd honestly say high here as well. They HAVE to be together, though; one without the other is just weird, and I'd say them being separate would be low as there'd be other tough and deserving competition for one of those spaces.

9-Volt: Another notable WarioWare character! I'd say his chances are high from his notoriety, and he already got Mario's blessing (well, I assume haha) to use his likeness in the microgames; why not turn it around and throw the kid into the races?

18-Volt: Low, unfortunately. I don't see him being anywhere without 9-Volt, and with both tough competition and me not really seeing him coming in the same way via Dribble and Spitz with 9, I don't like his chances.

5-Volt: Also low. I think she's got some good popularity from being a menacing stage hazard in Smash from the Game and Wario stage and I think she's got more love from fans compared to 18 (at least from what I remember), but 9-Volt takes more priority that for the same reasons as 18, I don't see 5 getting in.

Dr. Crygor: Medium here as well. Similar reasons to Jimmy T: Think he has plenty of fans, but tough competition.

Penny: Medium-high! She came a good while after Crygor, but from what I've seen, she's become much more popular (to the point that she even got a stage and theme song where you play as only her in Get It Together) that she's got some fairly high chances, I'd say, and I feel she can stand on her own without needing her grandpa.

Mike: Low. I don't think he stands on his own very well, not to mention I don't see him taking priority over Crygor and again, tough competition.

Orbulon: Medium. He's a charming character who's got his own piggy spaceship that can easily be adapted into a kart, so I think he's got a fair chance.

Kat and Ana: Medium-low, I'd say. I can see them being together in one, but I dunno, I'm just not thinking they've got good chances compared to the veterans and other high chance characters.

Ashley: Very high. Barring biker Wario, Ashley has the best chances out of everyone here. She's not known for driving, but she's also a long-runner in the series (not the first game-long, but still very long), has a lot of love from the fans, and even seems to be in enough high standing that she got a Mystery Mushroom costume in Super Mario Maker. She didn't even have an amiibo and she got into some kind of Mario game that isn't WarioWare! She's perhaps the best example of the "tough competition" and would likely get in over the others.

Red: Low alone, but he'd probably have a good chance of being with Ashley; I kind of don't see him turning into Ashley's ride in a MK game.

Young Cricket: Medium? He's got a good amount of fans, but I dunno, he just doesn't seem like he'd overcome some of the other options.

Mantis: Low. He's highly tied to Cricket in the first place and I would not like his chances.

Lulu: That's another low. She had her time in the limelight with her introduction in Gold, but that time's since passed and from what I recall, not too many like her.

And that's my theoretical chance evaluations! Personally speaking if they do add WarioWare characters, I'd see both Biker Wario and Ashley getting in then if there's one more spot, Dribble and Spitz in one.

I'm gonna start with why I picked the characters I did. First new character is Impa. Zelda needs a fourth rep, and another Link just isn't the right choice. Sheik has stayed her time, but I feel it should either be the Impa from Hyrule Warriors or Purah to play with some Tears of the Kingdom shenanigans.

Bandana waddle dee is here because Kirby's core four has been incomplete for LONG ENOUGH! This is justice for my boy!

Mewtwo was put in as a placeholder for a new starter. throw in the grass type starter from whatever the most recent Pokemon game is.

Colgate Toothpaste from Fire Emblem is there bc Fire Emblem deserves three reps. Marth to rep classic games, Robin (and I suppose Lucina) to rep the franchise's golden era, and Colgate to rep modern fire emblem.

Waluigi.

Tails and Knuckles are in because I said so. The Sonic franchise has interacted with Nintendo so much that it only feels right to add the rest of Team Sonic.

Noah was added as a second Xenoblade rep, replacing Pyra/Mythra.

Alucard replaces both Belmonts as a Castlevania rep. He just fits better imo.

For other odd roster choices, Isabelle steps up as Animal Crossing's main rep. It just feels right to have Isabelle there instead of... generic self insert main character. Wolf and Lucas were demoted to echo fighters for obvious reasons.

Geno was added as standalone DLC not only because Geno is awesome, but also because having 11 DLC characters would bring the total number to 56 (including random), which can be neatly sorted into a 14x4 grid

The first wave of DLC was the more "kid-friendly" wave. Open with Crash for the old timers, Eggman to round out the core sonic cast (except Amy, but oh well), Rayman because he got ROBBED in Ultimate, Shantae because she's cool and unique, and The Knight to rep the Best 2D Video Game Ever.

Wave 2 is the slightly more mature characters. Open with Bridgett because we love her, 2B because I couldn't think of anyone else, Travis to open the door for truly mature characters. Master Chief is the big one, obviously. I couldn't care less about Halo, but I feel like it might happen. Nintendo likes money and they've added Microsoft characters before. Joker's there as a placeholder for whoever the Persona 6 protag is. I put them on the end to close it out with an echo fighter.

I kinda wanted to be on-brand and put in amongus but I just can't see it being functional in a platform fighter.

i was starting to turn my head to the washed up etho jokes recently was bc someone on my own video was starting to direct conversation into it and was being like, a bit too actually mean about it. like there can be genuine analysis about How someone can beat a player like etho was beat like gem

as in my consensus in a non-joke way: gem, and honestly any experienced MCC player is more than capable than beating someone like him. we focused on etho due to the jokes just before but we saw doc, ren, and xisuma all get destroyed as well. yes etho had more of a rep for it, but its no different really, its just that the joke timed perfectly.

i think etho even said himself, in relation to comments about him doing MCC (i think in someone's stream) was that he didnt think he could keep up with the fast paced ways 'young players' do these days. and hes totally right on that. i mean, there is a SUCH a huge divide between casual and older minecraft players versus the immense number of young minecraft players who are hardcore into MCC and other similar speed games. younger gamers are often way more adept, i think thats a fact. the culture of gaming alone has shifted and e sports are huge along with all the methods those ppl use- MCC is pretty much in that vein.

ANWAYS..... the genuine point is. etho did have a well deserved title and impression of being good at pvp. honestly i dont think hes bad still- but when you put him next to others like gem then its no competition lol. in terms of his current skill i think him, and many others, fall behind just after all those years of playing and 1) not playing as much UHC/death games as before and 2) the overall change of the game. when you prime time was 9-10 years ago in UHC, a lot has changed. and bdubs and etho both joke about not using shields enough but i get it too- i never fuckin use them bc im old school and forget they exist. i would be smashed by someone who is far more accustomed to new methods. i also think the nerves got to him more in those two episodes lol... dying a ton+the joke, then getting destroyed by gem in hc, then returning to lim life only to see gem again. it was funny as hell but it probably didnt help him lmao. in short etho is in a sense, a good player still in those situations. but hes not at the standard that has spawned since more extreme players have come to the front. you dont see Life series full of MCC gamers right? i mean, we see Scott (and martyn as well) doing SO well multiple times and we all know why that is. if we had more MCC players im sure we would see them flourish too.

Bruh!! (10 hour-long rambling incoming)

I'll try to answer in order because there's a lot to go over but overall I agree with so much of what you said!!

Yuri's direction in eng truly is such a shame and I agree that, if this is the only version you've been exposed to and you either somehow did not see the m/m or chose to ignore it, then yeah I guess I can sorta understand why you'd think they're "just bros or rivals and nothing more". In english Yuri does sound like he could and would kill Flynn if needed, and despite the actual text making a point to underline how much they mean to each other, the vocal performance is half the heart of it.

I still find that Sam Riegel does a good job of imitating Mamo's softness and nuance, so to me his voice acting does not damage the perceived relationship as much. Troy though...the example I always point to is early game when Flynn tells Yuri to be careful in Capua Nor and Yuri replies "Stop treating me like a kid". If you go back and compare, the jp and eng versions tell vastly different stories with the same lines! In japanese Yuri sounds lightly amused and even playful which indicates fondness, habit and the knowledge that It's Not That Serious, yet in english he is just short of yelling?? It gives this line a very different undertone and makes it sound like Yuri is genuinely angry there. And this sort of misplaced anger/annoyance keeps happening throughout the whole game, it's infuriating.

It's the exact same as the example you pointed to later in-game when they're fighting in Nordopolica, because yes!!! Yuri IS hurt and choking on barely held-back tears because of Flynn's sudden shift in behavior!!! That's the whole point of the scene!! There's anger, yes, but also betrayal and the latter just does not transpire in english. If anything, he sounds like he IS ready to just kill Flynn right then and there, when in reality he's struggling with the realization that he might have to, after all. English Yuri already made up his mind, whereas Japanese Yuri is still fighting like a madman against the idea.

I truly could go on about the vocal performances forever lmao, I just find Tori and Mamo so goddamn good at their job. Their chemistry is unmistakable and it helps a ton that they're friends irl, too. The mobile games' voice lines really are a blessing, though I would just like to point out that Asteria's Claw arc did not involve Flynn at all, to my biggest dismay. That was entirely thanks to Rays collabing with them and giving us justice in their own app, but in the original Asteria arc it's actually Raven who follows Yuri and snaps him out of it. In a way it makes sense since it's a great opportunity for Raven to repay Yuri for what he did for him in Baction, but I still cannot stop thinking about how much more appropriate Flynn would've been. Alas, Asteria never liked Flynn much (sidelined him real quick after the first arc and then gave him a few non Yuri-related cameos in Estelle's arc later on). Rays, on the other hand...oh they're a fluri and ristelle treasure trove to be certain haha. I won't linger on it here since that would drive me into a tangent so long I would smash the character limit but basically Rays is everything we deserved and I love it so dearly for that.

As for the localization, it truly is the bane of my existence. I'm no expert in Japanese, not by a long shot, but I did graduate with a bachelor's degree in it so I pride myself in at least understanding a good enough chunck of it to be able to give an opinion. And like...as you said, some of it barely makes any sense. I know 2008 seems like ancient times by now but it's still "only" 16 years ago and yet none of it was even updated for the DE, not even a single look-over! Sometime since 2008 the trends shifted and suddenly it was the West that started focusing on LGBTQ rep more, but at that time I still think Japan did it better simply because when it did represent us, it most often chose subtlety over jokes. And as a queer person I'd still prefer being discreet and respected rather than front & center and the butt of the joke.

Vesperia really does feel like a queer game not just because of fluri and ristelle but because it is full with queerness at every corner. Cumore and Yeager are villainous stereotypes but they are outside of the heteronormative norm. Duke defies gender norms and his backstory with Elucifur may raise more than one eyebrow. There's a male NPC in one of the Capua harbors who pines for another guy (I think a "Gary"? Would have to check again). There's these two male NPCs you can see travelling the world together and meet in various town inns. There's Nobis whose sidequest needs you to deliver a "friendship book" to his "friend", after which the reward is a rainbow bookmark. There's this knight in Heliord who's desperately heads over heels in love with Flynn, like not even subtly his text keeps getting more explicit and hornier the more you talk to him throughout the game (he also recognizes Yuri as Flynn's "partner", so....like.....).

Fluri and ristelle are already plentiful, hell ristelle's baby sidequest and their prince & princess roleplay at the Nam Cobanda Isle theater still blow people's minds today, but the little background characters are what solidify this game as fully and unapologetically queer. There's so much non-heteronormativity in Vesperia that whenever the localization shoehorns it in, it clashes harshly with everything else. It just does not belong there, not in this form, not with this intent.

Now I agree with you that act 2 largely contributes to a romantic interpretation of Yuri and Estelle since, to so many, one cannot hug or save someone of the perceived opposite gender without being in love lmao. And to be fair, this arc's writer used a lot of romantic tropes in the Baction and Sword Stairs episodes...truly a wonder why he proceeded to co-write the most aggressively het Tales game to date (Arise) hmmm. I've never held Okuda in high regards, particularly since he wrote a mini afterstory with weird OOC stuff, but at the same time he also did write the Fluri childhood novels which completely destroyed me, so...yeah. Idk if you've played Arise yet but on top of it being an ass game it also truly feels like Okuda rewrote Yuri & Estelle but made it het and canon this time, as if he was rebooting them. It's all the same beats and tropes but made worse and undoubtedly het for the sake of being het. First game I ever nearly threw my controller at by the end.

I'm not saying the "thing" Estelle feels for Yuri is necessarily bad. It could even join the queer readings as a baby bi discovering herself - that's my own interpretation at least. Because as much of an undisputable lesbian rep Rita is, to me Estelle feels very much like a bisexual baby realizing there's more to romance than Guys. While I despise her character (won't get into that now but imo she's very poorly written past arc 1), I still like the idea of her having grown up with just 2 ideals of romance: the knight in shining armor and the mysterious rogue. The ultimate comphet.

So of course she'd fall for them once those idealized archetypes came into her life, because that's what she's been taught to feel in her many books. But as soon as she leaves the castle walls, she comes across several other types of people and sexualities, and comes to realize that huh, she may feel Some Type Of Way about women, too. Not just Rita, but Judith as well (gotta appreciate her obsession with Judy's breasts bc big same). By the end she's been slowly discovering more about herself and has yet a lot to learn, which is why Yuri is there to guide her. Notice that he's always somewhere in the background going "..." and giving them the knowing side eye whenever ristelle do Gay Stuff, even coins their ship name. His gaydar senses she's on the way to realizing what she truly wants, and so he understands that her "crush" on him is merely her latching onto the first guy in her life who not only respected her choices, but also saved her in many perilous situaions. It's literally the Bodyguard/Big Brother Crush (openly supported by the "Child of the full moon & Brave Vesperia" legend) and it happens a lot to young people who are inexperienced with romance but are dying to live it.

All that to say there's a reason why arc 2 in particular feels so weirdly pointed in one direction when the rest of the game is headed in another. It's not all bad, Karol's arc in the Blades is very dear to me and still made everybody in the audience (me included) cry at the anniversary party when they reenacted it, even 10 years later. But Vesperia's story being split in 3 and written by 3 different writers does show especially glaringly there, because its vibes have nothing to do with arc 1 or even arc 3.

On a very personal level, I've always considered Vesperia the queerest game in the Tales franchise, closely followed by Graces since I do agree that Richard and Asbel are definitely stupidly in love with each other (they gave each other a ring goddamnit). My friends and I joke that the execs realized how gay Vesperia was and decided to course-correct halfway through Graces' writing. Mission failed lol.

As a character I really do enjoy Cheria a lot, she's probably the best healer I've ever gotten to play with (Hubert suuuucks). Despite hitting a few of Estelle's beats like being kidnapped, she managed the situation so much better that she immediately became a better heroine in my eyes, only damaged by the heterosexuality she's been thrust in. Poor girl deserves better, and so did Pascal romance-wise (Hubert SUUUUUCKS). And then there's Zestiria, which, while very obviously gay, was a huge disappointment because I was sold a super queer game with super great queer rep, and was given a mess of a story with a mess of characters and really bland vanilla baby gays instead. They're legit dgmw, but nowhere near as powerful as, say, Rosali - they have the spice. Alisha is also one of my all-time favorite Tales heroine along with my beloved Natalia but that is another discussion entirely. Generally though it kills me whenever people hail Zesty as The Mostest Gayest Tales Game Eva when Vesperia is literally right there with all its queer spectrum ready to be seen, enjoyed and aknowledged!

Sigh. Vesperia is nowhere near perfect but it is so dear to my heart because it followed my own journey to queer self-discovery, and made me feel represented when I didn't even know I needed to be. And I will defend the japanese text, voice actors, creators and original intent with all my might because of that.

I am 100 percent with you on preferring the JP line in that cutscene if only because it does feel more powerful (and his voice is SO soft, which is something that frequently gets completely lost in the dub in general. Mamoru carries a much softer tone overall for Flynn, similar to how Yuri's playfulness and carefree vibe got lost in favor of the dub's aim for a more "cool adult guy").

That said, I was not even aware they left the whistle out!!! I haven't bothered with that sidequest because the outfit is readily available for free as DLC.

While I enjoy having Flynn present in the last battle, I wish they'd just had him look back up at the sky and say that right next to Yuri right before the very end of the cutscene (since imo that'd be the best placement for it). No reason not to stick that back in!!!

But removing the whistle is just an outright crime and I am owed a fee from the people who decided that for the devastation I've been inflicted with.

I used to be such a fan of the eng dub but tbh ever since I experienced the original japanese (back when we still called it the PS3 Version lol) I never looked back. The wording is so, so, SO much more layered and leaves little room to misinterpret subtleties and subtext. Like you, I've had many gripes about the localization because sometimes they just plain insert stuff that was never there in the first place - iirc Troy Baker admited that apparently they rushed the dub so hard, sometimes the voice actors themselves were asked to chip in for the translation...he said he loved that (I'll bet), but that might explain why so much of the OG english script was already full of weird phrasings and insertions...add to that the even more sloppy and lazy DE localization and you get only half of the richness of the original japanese.

Also yes Mamo and Tori *are* Flynn and Yuri more than anybody ever could be. Sam and Troy do a good enough job but I agree that Troy may have been directed to play Yuri closer to a traditional "cool bad boy", which is hilarious given how the original Yuri is a twist on that very trope. Unfortunately, Troy gave him this uncharacteristically cold/aggressive edge whenever he talks to Flynn that it makes it sound like he's always annoyed to see him, and it strips their relationship of so much of the softness and playfulness that Tori lends Yuri.

Anyway enough about me ranting because I could go on for about 10 more hours about this issue lmao. Honestly yeah they very well could've rearranged Flynn's cutscene to fit in there at the end, like hell if you can change the entire camera angles of whole scenes you can change that one background, no?? Knowing Tomizawa though that might have been more effort than he was willing to grant this remaster - won't be his last time.

Same for the wolf whistling!! They replaced it with a skit that is just as funny...

....but void of the insane flirting the original had. Idek why they went so far as to change it, it would've been less work to just leave it as it was 😭

Lilligant in Smash

Lilligant is a little taller than Kirby and very light, with below-average speed and power all around. She has the standard two jumps and can wall jump but not wall cling.

Basic Attacks

Jab: A two-hit jab where she swipes forward with the leaves that make up her arms. Can be somewhat spammed.

Dash: Lilligant trips and skids on her face since her tiny root feet clearly aren’t designed for running.

Side Tilt: Similar to her jab, but she only uses one leaf and puts a little more force behind it. 

Up Tilt: Swipes a leaf upwards, using Leaf Blade to extend her reach and add some extra force.

Down Tilt: A small sharp root jabs up out of the ground in front of her.

Forward Smash: Seed Bomb-Throws a seed in front of her that explodes forward. Charging it will increase the power and blast radius.

Up Smash: Same as the up tilt, but with more energy put into the Leaf Blade to make it longer and do more damage.

Down Smash: Petal Blizzard-Pink flower petals swirl around Lilligant, stunning and chip-damaging anyone nearby. Charging it increases the duration, and at full charge a launching burst is added to the end

Grab

Thin green roots come up in front of Lilligant and wrap around the opponent.

Pummel: Leech Seed-The roots glow green and sap the opponent’s health, healing Lilligant by a quarter of the damage dealt.

Forward Throw: Giga Drain-Fires a green ball of energy at the opponent that launches them away and does a decent chunk of damage. Liligant is then healed by half of that.

Back Throw: Makes a creative use of Substitute to switch places with the opponent, then copies Peach’s hip-check move.

Up Throw: Pollen Puff-Uses the roots to lift the opponent above her head, then releases a cloud of pollen that launches the opponent upwards. If Lilligant is on a team and her teammate manages to touch the cloud, they’ll be healed by the same amount of damage that the thrown opponent takes.

Down Throw: The roots drag the opponent down. This doesn’t do any damage, but does leave the opponent buried.

Air Attacks

Neutral Air: Leaves spin around Lilligant for a couple seconds.

Forward Air: Slashes from high to low with Leaf Blade.

Back Air: Return of the hip-check. It might technically be Giga Impact now that I think about it.

Up Air: Pollen Puff again. Has the exact same attributes as the throw version without the lift-over-head buildup.

Down Air: A weaker version of Seed Bomb aimed straight down.

Special Attacks

Neutral Special: Sunny Day-Lilligant takes a moment to form a ball of light above her head that makes the screen brighter for a second. After the animation is done, the ability Chlorophyll means her walk and run will be at 1.5 speed and the starting lag, end lag, and charge time of all her moves will be cut in half. This buff lasts twelve seconds and Sunny Day can be used again immediately after it ends. Lilligant is still able to be attacked during the animation, and if she’s hit before the screen brightens the buff doesn’t activate.

Side Special: Energy Ball-Lilligant fires a ball of green energy forward which explodes if it hits anything or if it travels about a quarter of Final Destination. This can be charged to increase the distance and power.

Up Special: Leaf Storm/Grassy Glide- Ascends a fair distance rather quickly in a spinning column of leaves that stun and do chip damage. Afterwards her arm leaves grow and she glides down with similar physics to Steve’s Elytra, but without the rockets.

Down Special: Synthesis-Lilligant spreads out all her leaves and glows green, healing her by 5% if the move isn’t interrupted. This is the only move that isn’t sped up by Sunny Day, instead boosting the health gained to 10%

Final Smash

Solar Beam-Fires a yellow-green laser the same size and power of Samus’s Zero Beam in any chosen direction, and can adjust her aim slightly while firing. The beam goes through platforms and destructible terrain but not walls or solid stage. If Lilligant is standing on something she can’t do downward angles, but in the air anything goes.

Animations

Entrance: Comes out of a Pokeball.

Idle 1: Brushes at the leaf that makes up her bangs.

Idle 2: Dusts off the sides of her dress.

Side Taunt: Playfully hops in place three times.

Up Taunt: Spins around, then does Leon’s Pose, like the player character can in Sword and Shield.

Down Taunt: Puts one of her leaves up to where her mouth would be and tilts her head, pondering something.

Victory 1: Spins around and strikes a pose with her leaves raised to the sides, like Piranha Plant does during one of its taunts.

Victory 2: Hops around in delight, as a sort of extended version of her side taunt. This keeps going as long as you’re on the results screen.

Victory 3: A bunch of Petilil dance and play around her while she’s standing with her eyes closed in a sort of mouthless smile.

#3rd Party Reps Again, you can make a strong argument for Gordon Freeman, Lara Croft, or Leon Kennedy (but I'd choose Albert Wesker), or even Master Chief, Spyro, Dante, or Shantae but there are only a handful I would add. And, for another self-imposed rule, I would not choose someone who was in another Smash clone or fighting game, sorry Phoenix Wright. Rayman: Rayman was in Sm4sh as a trophy. Ridiculous that he wasn't in. Rayman has now also crossed over with Mario so he, compared to other platformer mascots, deserves a spot on the roster. Tetris: Tetris is the most successful game. It also defined the Gameboy. Bomberman: He'd be really cool. Hudson Soft made the best Mario Parties. I don't really know how to explain this one, my friend said it and I thought it was the best suggestion I've ever gotten. Professor Layton: I have wanted him in Smash for years. Crash Bandicoot: Out of any platformer mascot, the only non-nintendo one who has him beat is Sonic. Every other one is dead, but Crash has somehow been able to return. How do we save Crash from the same fate as Banjo though? Simple, Crash Twinsanity. Crash AND Neo Cortex. And then as a skin, Coco and Nina! I think this would be really unique.

Unpopular opinion, but I genuinely don't understand the "Men are inherently privileged in this society". Like, who's the first to die in wars? Who's always expected to sacrifice themselves and not expect any help? Who's seen as inherently dangerous and violent and thus experience police bias? Who's sexual violence victims are always overlooked and hardly every get any justice? Who's expected to be feminist for equal rights BUT pay for the woman they're not even dating yet? Ik last one isn't a huge deal, I'm saying that it's about always placing the financial burden on a man as if a woman is his child or something.

You may go on about how these issues are invented by men, but if you're a man or society forces you to be one, it doesn't help you anyhow or chanhe the situation. You have to sacrifice yourself, you have to go to the army, you will be ignored as a sa or violence victim. You can be a dead ass 'smash the patriarchy' dude but this won't save you from all of these issues. So where is the inherent privilege? I agree that male privileges do exist, but there are also disadvantages and pretty serious ones. How the fuck are we supposed to ignore all this?

-  Like, who's the first to die in wars?

Let us by way of conclusion repeat the two major findings. The first is the fact that in ongoing wars which occur most often in developing countries, men die more frequently than women in direct armed conflicts, while more women than men die in post-conflict situations of the indirect causes of war. The other finding is the fact that we in general know very little about the conflict related mortality of both women and men in contemporary wars. Both findings hamper policy planning for military and humanitarian assistance. We have no good data on the causes of death in modern wars. Are male casualties a result of deadly wounds or of the lack of medical care or of other war related diseases? What are the causes of female deaths in post-conflict situations?

There really isn’t a good source out there that specifically says who dies more. The numbers you see are just totals of everyone who died.

-  Who's always expected to sacrifice themselves and not expect any help?

As a society, we tend to not care as much when it comes to the well being of men. We see what women go through as more tragic and more deserving of attention and resources when we should be paying attention to both. This is what is referred to as male disposability. 

For example, cancer. 

The 2nd deadliest cancer for women is breast cancer. The 2nd for men is prostate cancer. 

nearly 10,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year. But you wouldn’t know it, from the cancer research funding. The National Cancer Institute spends twice as much funding research on breast cancer than it does on prostate cancer; the National Institutes of health spends almost three times more ($700 million, to prostate cancer’s $250 million).

It’s just in the US that prostate cancer gets lesser funding. The UK only has £12m that goes towards it while breast cancer gets £23m. 

Oftentimes when you hear about cancer and you hear about fundraisers and such, it’s about breast cancer. Shining a light on it isn’t a bad thing, but we shouldn’t overlook what prostate cancer does to men.

Another example is homelessness. In Portland Oregon back in 2015, Mayor  Charlie Hales said  he wants to declare a housing emergency next month with the hope of providing shelter for all homeless women by year's end.

At that time, the percentage of adult women who were homeless was 30% while 58% of adult men were homeless.

-  Who's sexual violence victims are always overlooked and hardly every get any justice?

Oftentimes, this goes unreported and not taken into account. That’s why we see low numbers. There’s this huge stigma that both men and women (some, not all of course) are at fault for. It’s seen as offensive to some that you would even mention it because they think it happens so little and your focus should be on the female victims. 

Human trafficking is one such example. 

Now, mounting evidence, along with the accounts of front-line psychologists and social workers, show that men and boys make up a significant proportion of victims of trafficking, validating Procopio's realization. A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in 2012 estimated that men accounted for 25 percent of trafficking victims globally. Further, the Global Report on Trafficking in Persons estimated that 27 percent of all victims detected globally were children and that of those, one in three victims were boys.

In addition, staff at the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline identified more than 24,000 cases of human trafficking in the United States from 2012 to September 2016. Of those, 13 percent—or more than 3,000—were men.

Internationally, there has been a greater response to male victims of sex trafficking, especially in Asia and the Middle East where the crime is much more rampant. Service providers in the UAE recently opened the first center for male victims of human trafficking in Abu Dhabi and anti-trafficking organizations focusing solely on men such as Urban Light are common in Southeast Asia. In general, there are more foreign organizations working with male victims of sex trafficking because of the high rates of HIV / AIDS in Asia and the global south. Treatment for HIV / AIDS is often part of the rehabilitation and recovery services offered for male victims of sex trafficking. Even in developed countries, there has been a concern for male victims of sex trafficking. For example, in the United Kingdom there is growing awareness of the number of male victims after a report by the Salvation Army stated that 41 percent of human trafficking victims in the United Kingdom were men. Regardless of location or gender, what it really comes down to is that all victims of sex trafficking need a safe place for recovery and rehabilitation.

Granted yes, women make up a large number of victims. However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t recognize that it happens to both. I don’t think a lot of people realize that boys are victims as well. You just don’t think about it. You hear human trafficking and you think of women and girls. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to sound like we shouldn’t have any focus on women and girls, we just need to think about both. We should help both. We should give attention towards both. 

-  Who's seen as inherently dangerous and violent and thus experience police bias?

For all young men, regardless of skin color, police violence was also a leading cause of death between 2013 and 2018. Overall, women are about 20 times less likely to be killed by police than men.

The average lifetime odds of being killed by police are about 1 in 2,000 for men and about 1 in 33,000 for women.

-  Who's expected to be feminist for equal rights BUT pay for the woman they're not even dating yet? 

In a survey on love and finances conducted by Money and SurveyMonkey, 78% of respondents said they think men should pay on the first date. Out of the 4,447 participants, 20 percent disagreed, while 2 percent declined to answer.

Overall, women were slightly less united on the matter. While 85% of men agreed that their wallets should be on the line, only 72% of women said so. This trend held steady with every group except for divorcees, where women slightly edged out the men in answering “yes.”

The gender gap was widest among single people who have never been married: A full third of single women said men shouldn't be expected to foot the bill on the first outing. Also, a quarter of all millennials responded “no” when asked if they thought, in general, men should pay.

The survey does not account for regional disparities or the broad spectrum of relationships outside of the heterosexual. But for now, it appears men are still largely expected to pony up on the first date. So how much will this tradition cost them?

When asked how much was appropriate to spend on a first date, 41% of respondents answered $25 to $49. But many male respondents claimed to be bigger spenders: 43% of men said they expected to shell out between $50 and $99 on a first date.

Chivalry dictates that on a “date,” the man pays, whereas egalitarian ideals suggest that gender should not determine who pays. We examined the extent to which people embrace or reject these competing notions. Unmarried heterosexual participants (N = 17,607) reported their behaviors and attitudes regarding who does and who should pay for dates on a survey posted on NBCNews.com. Although most men (74%) and women (83%) report that both members of the couple contribute to dating expenses after dating for 6 months, most men (84%) and women (58%) reported that men still pay more expenses. Many women (39%) wished men would reject their offers to pay and 44% of women were bothered when men expected women to help pay. Many women, however, were bothered when men won’t accept their money (40%). Nearly two thirds of men (64%) believed that women should contribute and nearly half of men (44%) said they would stop dating a woman who never pays. Nevertheless, the majority of men said they feel guilty when accepting women’s money (76%). These data illustrate how many people are resisting or conforming to traditional gender norms in one telling aspect of dating that historically was related to the male’s displaying benevolent sexism, dominance, and ability to fulfill breadwinner role during courtship.

The answer as to who should pay really depends on the person. A common reason you’ll hear why men should is that they need to make a good first impression, it’s being a gentleman or if he asked, he should pay. Something along those lines. I think regardless of who asks, the first date should be split. That’s just my opinion.

This whole idea of men being “privileged” has done harm. It’s the only problem that has people not seeing that men have their own issues too, but it doesn’t help. It’s pretty hard to see it when you’re constantly being fed this idea that men are always benefiting in society (especially the more narrow you go with sexuality, race, etc.). 

Some people might still see them as  privileged while having their own issues. Others, the more extreme type, don’t see them as having problems. It seems impossible to them. 

And that, everyone, is a huge problem
