Hello, I read your fic Dreams in the Necromancer House and just wanted to say I'm really enjoying it. The images are so vivid, I don't know how you do it. And so I was wondering if I could ask where did you get your inspiration from. As in, if you add references about certain books or history or traditions where do you find them? Wikipedia? I'm just curious about how to do research. Specifically the tag that says Lovecraftian cults, tbh I have no clue about the H.P.Lovecraft universe. I just think it's really interesting.
Also, I am probably going to read it again because I'm sure I've missed out on some details. Anyways, have a nice day.
Hey, thank you for the thoughtful ask! This is the sort of question writers dream about receiving.
Here is the not-so-secret and not-so-glamorous process for how I compile references for my works (not just this one--this L4D2 series took a LOT of research, and so did that one SuperBat fic).
For me, the earliest creative process is kaleidoscopic: I'll have multiple scenes that don't seem like they all fit together spinning around in my head, and "the plot" is what happens when I try to make them all line up and become one coherent thing. Usually, there are the Scenes Of Pure Inspiration which arrive out of nowhere, followed by the Scenes Of Pure Necessity that have to happen to support the Pure Inspiration, and then one or two Scenes Of Damn Wouldn't That Be Cool that come up as I play different scenarios out in my head. Once it's over, I'll probably discuss the Scenes Of Pure Inspiration from "Dreams" more in detail.
Then I start doing outlines. Yes, I construct outlines for my fanfics, just as I do for my original works. There are far too many tiny moving parts in a story for them not to be contained in an outline--even if you move them to a different spot later, the damn things'll get lost in the sofa cushions if you don't keep them in a container of some kind. (I hope this metaphor hasn't gotten away from me.)
Dreams has three outlines--the one I wrote while still generating ideas, the one I wrote to establish timelines more firmly, and then an annotated one that has all the references I've sprinkled throughout the story. So I do consider this to be a vital part of the process. There will be a fourth notation file I generate when I do my final editing pass after it's all published, too! That one will cover me stating stuff about character histories and little story details, so that (for an example that really happened) I don't have Armitage giving a flask of whiskey to Herbert which later turns into a flask of Everclear.
Now where does the research bit come in? For me, when I do my extremely-detailed outline or when I start writing.
For details regarding history, science, politics, and the like, I generally rely on Googling, same as anyone else (excluding results after the year 2021 if I'm not finding what I need). Better than this, though, is books. I used to collect books that were writers' references--one of my favorites was a guide to poisons, both "the most likely poisons used in a murder mystery" AND "how to design your own poison/toxin/venom". Also guidebooks for TTRPGs, sacred texts, gardening guides, etc. I currently have a book series called "The Home Doctor" that teaches you how to do baseline veterinary and human medicine (according to the early 1900s). I don't have that because I plan on using it for its intended purpose, but I did use it to research a L4D2 fic where someone's leg gets amputated--and I even had the characters in the fic owning those same books!
What really matters for a story like Dreams, though, is thematic feel. I think folks will forgive me if I were to mention a musical band that didn't exist in 1987/8, but far less so if I didn't nail the feel of 1987/8, or of cosmic horror. So while I am writing a story, I immerse not only in the source material (if it's a fanfic), but also in music, movies, books, comics, and etc. that "feel right". I'll draw off those media for further inspiration, because let's face it, creativity is knowing what to steal and how to steal it. (I didn't say that--Tarantino did.)
The key here is that I don't stop interacting with research and creative works when I'm not writing. I'll flip through my books or go down a rabbit hole of "what the hell is THAT scientific concept about" or learn about magical rituals every day that I can. If the compilation of research material looks easy or fast when I do it, it's because I'm always doing it and I know how to narrow it down!
For Dreams, I could go "Oh, here's a list of all the stories and movies and etc. I want to build off of" because I already had all of those things in my mental wheelhouses. If you wanted it, here is a specific list of the actual non-Lovecraftian works that thematically support and inspire Dreams in the Necromancer House:
Prince of Darkness (1987)+
Hereditary (2018)*
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals (2019)
Stir of Echoes (1999)
Mandy (2018)
Skeleton Crew, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, and Everything's Eventual by Stephen King: specifically, "Nona", "1408", "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut", "Gramma"+, "Autopsy Room Four", and "That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French"
Black Butterflies and Heatseeker by John Shirley: specifically "Cram", "Tahiti In Terms of Squares", "The Almost Empty Rooms", "Woodgrains"
The King in Yellow by Robert Chalmers
Twin Peaks
Music: "We Will Commit Wolf Murder" by of Montreal, "Leather Jacket" by Ben Folds Five, "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette, "Over & Over" by Rio Romeo, "No One's Around To Help" by JerryTerry
The Arkham Horror board game
"The Mysterious Stranger/An Angel Named Satan" from The Adventures of Mark Twain
And since you were asking about Lovecraft's universe, here are the stories that went into this particular tale. All of his stuff is treated as being in the public domain, so you can easily find it on sites like Project Gutenberg or wikis:
"The Case of Charles Dexter Ward"+
"The Thing on the Doorstep"+
"The Dunwich Horror"+
"The Colour Out of Space", as well as the film adaptation Color Out of Space (2019)
"Pickman's Model"
"The Call of Cthulhu"*
"The Shadow Over Innsmouth"*
And of course, "Dreams in the Witch-House"+
The ones marked with an * are the most detailed stories regarding what I mean by "Lovecraftian cults", and the ones with a + are good demonstrations of wizardry/magic systems that supported this work.

I'm trying to wrangle all the TSG research into some kind of outline that makes sense, and a few thoughts have come up.
There were a lot of adaptations of The Secret Garden in the late 1980s and 1990s, coinciding with the book's coming into public domain in 1987. This died down for a while, but there's been a resurgence of adaptations and retellings within the past decade or so. These responses to the story would thus have come from people who were likely to have been influenced by such well-known adaptations as the 1993 film or the 1991 musical.
The adaptations of the 80s/90s tended to emphasize gothic elements, like the eerieness of the manor, the tragedy of lost parents, and an interpretation of Colin as the agency-less damsel in distress victim of villainous/misguided adults. They also tended to downplay the more down-to-earth elements, such as the influence of the Sowerbys and Ben Weatherstaff and the practical side of the children's recovery. Mrs. Sowerby, who is the book's personification of ideal parenthood, is notably absent from most of these adaptations. Since these adaptations were so well-known, they have had an impact on many people's understanding of the story, to the point that inventions of these adaptations are often treated as if they come from the book. (For the last time, everyone, Mary's uncle is not a lord, and Burnett never wrote the "whole world is a garden" line or anything like it.)
Therefore, we can look at the more recent adaptations and retellings as responses to not just the book but to earlier adaptations as well. And the influence of these adaptations has probably been a factor in these versions' reframing the story as about traditional grief rather than emotional neglect. It fits in better with the gothic perception of the story, which is more about the Tragedy and Loss and Drama. The elements that were downplayed in 80s/90s adaptations are also either downplayed or entirely omitted in recent versions. For instance, despite Mrs. Sowerby's prominence in the text, she or an equivalent does not appear/plays no meaningful role in such works as The Humming Room, The Misselthwaite Archives, The Secret Garden (2020 film), The Secret Garden on 81st Street, The Edge of In Between (maybe--I need to reread this one to confirm), The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn, and A Bit of Earth, all of which date from 2012-2023. Without a positive maternal figure as a point of comparison and a force for good, the narrative is not interested in examining the effects of failed parenting versus successful parenting, and the themes have to go elsewhere. These are not necessarily "bad" adaptations or poorly done works in their own right! But their themes and priorities often significantly differ from those of the original text. Recent adaptations/retellings have tended to turn into a translation of a translation, and in the process some of the original's essence has been lost.

MORE SCOUT HEADCANONS???? THIS MUTHAFUCKER OUT OF CONTROL!!!!
YALL THOUGHT I WAS DONE⁉️⁉️⁉️BACK WITH IT AGAIN YALL KNOW THE DRILL 🗣️🗣️
He tries to swim in the air if he's held by the waist
He died on December 4th 1987 because he finally listened to something other than Tom Jones for the first time in seven years and melted into a hot radioactive waste full of uranium, radium, graphite, zirconium, titanium magnesium and silicone dioxide. The song was "Walk Like an Egyptian" by The Bangles.
The only facial hair he ever had has a fu manchu
He has ridiculously big earlobes that he gauges when he's 30
He and spy once tricked a bunch of oysters on a beach to come back home with them but spy are them all before scout could even get the seasonings.
SIKE BITCH!!! THESE ARE TOKI HEADCANONS 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Toki Wartooth 🔛🔝❗❗❗
He also has giant earlobes, but every cat he's ever has sucks on them so he can't gauge them
He'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden, in the shade.
He hates everything to do with whipping. Or caning. If he hears a belt snap he starts chewing on his hand until it bleeds.
He was hyperdontia, and his canines are spiked because they're chipped!
He can sew very well, and has a pimp hat with Garfield embroidered on it.
The first American song he ever heard in America was "nasty bxtch" by bustdown.
He claims that the Norse god Loki appears in his room on occasion and leaves him peppers and sweets. This actually DOES happen. but every single time, Toki has been microdosing datura so even he has no idea if it's true.
He Stole a lobster and named it Björk. He's also stolen both hands from a mannequin in a jc Penny's when he was 17 in America.
He came to America when he was 16 years old, very close to 17, and had his 17th birthday in a thrift shop with an old couple.
Got high and called Dr rockso up and said "yous a bitch. Your mom ams a bitch. Your hair ams wack. Yo gear ams wack. Uuuuhhhh, Kafkaesque. Fuckins' pogo the clown bitch.... Okay, loves you rockzo, bye! *+꒰⑅ᵕ༚ᵕ꒱˖♡"
Rockzo was sitting right next to him egging him on.
A fan drove his car over a bridge with his wife inside over him but Charles made sure he never found out.
He listens to music while coloring and Murderface heard him listening to power metal, glam rock, 1980s pop, and death metal. In the midst of it all, pain loomed over them when ave maria began playing. Murderface brought him some garlic pickles after that.
His favorite pony is rainbow dash.
Anthrax doesn't affect him for whatever reason
He has a very faint scar that wraps from one end of his face, over the nose, and across to the other side (I'm not just projecting bro trust 🙏🏼)
His second favorite drink is pineapple fanta he WILL tear that shit up. Put a grocery store clerk outta house and home. Give the landfills somethin to cry about. Nathan walked into his room vaguely frightened and witnessed him surrounded by pineapple sody pop. It dripped from his his hands and walls n shit like a crime scene involving a mace.
Nathan quells his rage with pineapple slices. Pickles carbonated pineapple juice for him in secret and says "hehe quick get in there lil fucker." Skwisgarr lost an eyebrow to this event.
Goes to the Everglades and straight up harasses nature

Book:  Flowers in the Attic
             By V C Andrews
Film:    Flowers in the Attic (1987)
Flowers in the Attic is a 1979 Gothic novel by V. C. Andrews. It is the first book in the Dollanganger Series, and was followed by Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, Garden of Shadows, Christopher's Diary: Secrets of Foxworth, Christopher's Diary: Echoes of Dollanganger and Christopher's Diary: Secret Brother. The novel is written in the first-person, from the point of view of Cathy Dollanganger. It was twice adapted into films in 1987 and 2014. The book was extremely popular, selling over forty million copies world-wide.
Flowers in the Attic is a 1987 American psychological horror film directed by Jeffrey Bloom and starring Louise Fletcher, Victoria Tennant, Kristy Swanson, and Jeb Stuart Adams. Its plot follows four children who, after the death of their father, are held captive in the attic of their abusive grandmother's sprawling estate by their cruel and manipulative mother. It is based on V. C. Andrews' 1979 novel of the same name. At one point Wes Craven was scheduled to direct the film, and had completed a screenplay draft. Producers were disturbed by his approach to the incest-laden story, however, and Jeffrey Bloom ended up with writing and directing duties.

the secret garden: dickon sowerby throughout different adaptations
given how many different adaptations of the secret garden there are, it is inevitable that some of them would use the same ideas. @isfjmel-phleg did a great post on the integration of mary’s mother and colin’s mother being twin sisters that has been used throughout different versions of the story, starting with the 1991 broadway musical. however, there is one popular change that particularly irks me, and that is what i like to call the “left-out dickon trope.”
so just what, exactly, is this trope? it’s simple: dickon sowerby is used as a plot device to “fix” colin and mary, restoring them to their childlike glory, and is cast away at the end of the story. in most adaptations that use this trope, dickon is painted in an almost otherworldly way, as an omniscient character who can sense when it is time for him to leave. he is not a cheerful, childlike boy full of life as he is in the original text; rather, he is dark, mysterious and ethereal.
the trope, as far as i can tell, started in the 1987 hallmark film. it is also present in the 1993 warner brothers film, and after that, the 1994 animated film. however, it is most prevalent in the 1987 film, where dickon is played by barret oliver (“the neverending story”).
oliver plays dickon in a cocky, overly confident way. he is much older in appearance than mary and colin (although colin, played by the two-years-younger jadrien steele, is significantly taller) and acts like he knows more than they do about…everything. near the end of the film, mary and colin are fretting about how they will eventually be sent to boarding schools, and dickon makes an off-handed remark about how they will “be parted” (“we’ll be parted, you and me. but remembrance will keep us friends.”). after this, he leaves the garden—right before archibald walks in to witness colin walking for the first time, the emotional climax of the film. in the final scene of the movie, an older mary returns to the garden and talks with ben weatherstaff. they discuss a letter sent that details dickon’s death in a field during the war, and mary says that dickon always knew he would die surrounded by growing things.
throughout the 1987 movie, there is a black cat, specifically in the scenes featuring future mary. this cat seems to represent dickon, as he is not there in the final scene; perhaps it is supposed to represent his spirit or something otherwise. it paints him as something different than the cousins—someone magical and immortal, which he is not and should not be. this, combined with his arrogant superiority complex, is extremely frustrating and not accurate to the book at all.
in the 1993 movie, dickon carries a bit of this arrogance. he’s a bit of a showoff in my opinion (that scene where he eats the grub, for example). the trait is handled better than in the ’87 version, though, because it can really be passed off as him being older than the cousins and them being slightly in awe of him. however, also like the ’87 film, dickon is completely excluded at the end. he’s set up to be mary’s best friend (or maybe more), but in the end, he is not included in the family’s reunion scene, looking on as a bystander. dickon is constantly seen with a white horse (oh, hello, 1991 musical fans—he actually does have a fine white horse. or pony? you know i think it’s actually a pony. i’m not one to trust on my equine knowledge), and with this steed, he rides away after bringing mary and colin to archibald—it’s almost like he was strictly there for plot convenience the whole time. i really like andrew knott’s dickon, more than many other versions, so it’s very disappointing when he doesn’t make the found family at the end. the 1994 animated adaptation follows this example—there’s a scene at the end where colin asks his father something along the lines of are they a “real family” now, and archibald responds “yes. you, me and mary,” while dickon and martha are never spoken of again).
obviously the 1993 film is the most popular and universally beloved adaptation, and it’s beautifully made. i think that it deserves the spotlight it gets, although i personally am a sucker for the 1949 film (hm. perhaps it’s because dickon isn’t left out or changed to be an ethereal character unlike his book counterpart?!). but the 1993 film tends to focus more on aesthetics and visuals rather than actual character development. for example, colin has his puppet theater, which is adorable, and a beautiful prop, but it doesn’t add much to his character. its existence means he’s more imaginative, right? couldn’t there have been a scene in which he plays with it by himself, showing his neglect and ability to fend for himself mentally as he has no one to do that for him? but there isn’t (although the clip of heydon and kate goofing around with the theater is sweet too). another example is dickon’s exclusion: the overhead shot of him riding away on that white pony going “my work here is done” is much more “cinematically beautiful” than him being a part of the group hug at the end.
in the original book, dickon is so lovable and helpful to mary and colin only BECAUSE he’s so down-to-earth and realistic. mary and colin are almost like caricatures of children in the beginning of the story: old-fashioned, idealistic, and not relatable. they don’t know what a real, “normal” childhood is like until dickon, a real boy with rosy cheeks and life inside comes to meet them. but dickon does not bring mary and colin back to life; he’s just one example to them of the life that they could be living when they begin to heal and grow. he’s not this magical, all-knowing, omniscient being with a superiority complex, and his character doesn’t need to rely on “fixing” mary and colin for plot convenience. they need to grow and learn by themselves, and dickon’s whole character should not be thrown away for the cousins’ sake.

First impression: At first glance, Wendy is a normal girl like any other, for those of high standards or love of danger she may appear boring and sloppy.
Once you get to know them: Wendy has a secret that she kept from everyone for a long time before arriving in Santa Carla. This girl after her parents' divorce found her comfort zone in studying witchcraft on her own. She is a beginner, but don't underestimate her! Under those shy glasses and eyes hides a capable and strong girl if necessary.

★BACKSTORY★
Wendy is the second of three children in the Emerson family. She has always been, unlike Michael and Sam, a model daughter, intelligent at school and polite to people. Unfortunately this quality began to fail when her mother and father separated;
She not only felt abandoned by her father but also uprooted from her home in Phoenix and all her future projects. For this reasons Wendy really has a great resentment towards her father (who, according to her, has not had to give up anything and does not seem to regret having forced his family to leave their city).
In Santa Carla, however, Wendy tried to take her life back in hand and readjust it as best she could, she restarted school after the summer with the intention of being able to then access some good university.
Despite this, life never seems to be quite normal for her...Recently Wendy has approached witchcraft, as a sort of escape valve from heavy family situations. And this made her discover not only a different world in her eyes, but also the attention of dangerous creatures, like The Lost Boys, a group of four vampires looking for trouble in Santa Carla.
Whether acquaintance with vampires can become explosive and menacing or convivial and diplomatic will depend only on the young witch.

The Secret Garden (1987 musical)
At the request of @everafterwhy, and possibly of interest to @marysfoxmask.
This musical (music by Steven Markwick and book and lyrics by Diana Morgan) never made it to Broadway, but it prompted the existence of the better-known Secret Garden musical that did. The producer and set designer of the 1991 musical, Heidi Landesman, after hearing a recording of the Markwick/Morgan production, was unimpressed and teamed up with writer Marsha Norman to do the story better justice.
The recording I listened to dated from 1993 and included a booklet with the synopsis and lyrics, which I’ve transcribed below for reference (reproducing the original’s odd spelling and punctuation as much as possible). The CD isn’t easy to find; I was able to borrow it through interlibrary loan, which your own library might provide if you’re curious.
According to the synopsis, this musical more or less follows the plot of the book, albeit simplified. Some things seem to be omitted or changed. Martha for some reason is in on the secret; it’s not specified when, how, or why. Instead of indignantly rising from his wheelchair to prove Ben’s assumptions wrong, this Colin has no such initiative and is basically peer-pressured by the others into standing (...which is comparable to how the 1991 musical handles it). Susan Sowerby is completely absent, and Mr. Craven is persuaded to come home by a visit from Mrs. Medlock, of all things.
I was not especially impressed with the soundtrack. None of the music was memorable, and having the children played by teenagers or young adults (the garden is said to have been locked for fourteen years, implying the kids have been aged up) was not an effective choice. The cast’s performances were fine, from my inexpert perspective, but the songs were lackluster. Many of the lyrics seemed trite to me, and there’s a lot of needless repetition (”Get Up Miss Mary” and “The Little Rajah” are particularly guilty for this) with little depth or character development. The songs tend to dump obvious information, or heavy-handedly moralize (”Give It a Try” especially), or just plain have nothing to do with anything. Was it necessary to give Ben Weatherstaff a rather sexist solo about why he prefers roses to women? Or do we need to give Martha a whole song about her unseen, plot-irrelevant boyfriend and their plans to be buried together (...which is really off-theme for this story)? Meanwhile, Colin doesn’t even get a solo and seems to be there to repeat what others sing (Dickon, when urging him to stand, even tells him, “Don’t try to talk”?)--again, not unlike how the 1991 musical handled the character.
Dickon’s solo “Nightfolk” is probably the best song of the lot in terms of lyrical quality, I think. On the whole, the 1991 production--whatever my issues with its interpretation of story and characters--is musically more effective, creative, and better written.
But bear in mind that I have no background in music and you can take my opinion with a grain of salt. Take a look below at the summary and lyrics and draw your own conclusions.
Cast (in order of appearance)
Archibald Craven: Peter Gale
Mrs. Medlock: Angela Rook
Martha: Ruth Reaney
Truscott: Toby Morton
Mary: Elizabeth Bolognini
Ben: Tony Watkins
Dickon: Ian Kelsey
Colin: Raoul Bolognini
One day Archibald Craven, master of Misselthwaite Hall on the Yorkshire moors, receives a letter from India telling him that his niece Mary has been orphaned and therefore become his ward. Craven, who is slightly hunchbacked, has never recovered from his wife’s tragic death and has been a wanderer ever since. He leaves on his travels and instructs Mrs. Medlock, the housekeeper, to look after Mary.
Mary arrives at Misselthwaite Hall a miserable, disagreeable and spoilt little girls and Martha, her down-to-earth Yorkshire maid, and Mrs. Medlock have trouble with her on the very first morning - GET UP MISS MARY.
Martha tells Mary to play in the grounds and Mary says she doesn’t know how to play by herself - OTHER LITTLE GIRLS.
Mrs. Medlock, Truscott, the man servant, and Martha remember Misselthwaite Hall as it used to be when Mrs. Craven was alive - MISSELTHWAITE HALL.
Mary finds out from Martha that one of the walled gardens used to belong to Mrs. Craven but has been locked up since she dies. A robin leads Mary to the key which had been thrown away and Mary lets herself into THE SECRET GARDEN.
Martha feels sorry for Mary’s loneliness and sends her young brother Dickon to keep her company. Dickon is a country lad who loves animals. He teaches Mary to whistle like the robin - GIVE IT A TRY.
On an unexpected visit, Craven asks Mary if she wants anything and she says she wants a garden. Mary’s request reminds Craven of his wife, Lillian, and when she goes he pulls aside the curtain over Lillian’s portrait and sings - LILLIAN.
Mary shows Dickon into the secret garden which is badly overgrown and they make plans to get to work on it. When she leave that evening Dickon sings about his friends - NIGHTFOLK.
Mary has been hearing screams in the nights and one night she goes to investigate and finds a boy of her own age crying in his bed. He is Colin, Craven’s son, a delicate boy who thinks he will become a hunchback like his father. He is very spoilt but neglected by his father because he reminds him of his wife. Mary says he behaves like a little rajah she saw in India - THE LITTLE RAJAH - and she sings him to sleep.
Ben, the old gardener, sings to Martha and Mary about his true love - ROSES and in reply Martha sings about hers - DAI AND I.
Dickon and Mary have been taking Colin into the secret garden in his wheelchair and he, like Mary, has begun to change into a happier child. The garden has also been transformed under the children’s love and care and now it is spring - THAT’S SPRING.
Colin improves daily with visits to the secret garden and one one Mary, Dickon, Martha and Ben persuade Colin to try and stand - GIVE IT A TRY.
Mrs. Medlock goes to London to see Craven and says she thinks Lillian would have liked him to come back to Misselthwaite and see his son who has wonderfully improved - LILLIAN (reprise).
Ben meets Craven on his arrival back in Yorkshire and takes him into the secret garden. Craven looks on as Colin, Mary, Dickon and Martha play blind-man’s-bluff with Colin as the blind man. They are singing THAT’S SPRING and stop abruptly when Craven appears. Colin tears off his handkerchief and sees his father. He holds out his hand and Craven, bewildered, holds out his - FINALE.
GET UP MISS MARY
Martha: Get up Miss Mary / Your breakfast is hot;
Mary: I will not, Martha Davis / I will not, I will not.
Martha: Then I’ll have to make you / You can’t stay in bed; / Don’t pull the bedclothes / Over your head.
Mary: Don’t you dare touch me
Martha: Sorry I must.
Mary: If you come any nearer / I’ll scream till I just / Explode, I will
Martha: You won’t
Mary: I will
Martha: You won’t.
Mary: I hate it in Yorkshire it’s windy and cold / There’s no one to play with and everyone’s old; / I hate Mrs. Medlock and Misselthwaite Hall / But you Martha Davies [sic] I hate most of all.
Martha: Don’t make me angry, don’t be so bold / When I give an order you do as you’re told
Mary: I won’t
Martha: You will
Mary: I won’t
Martha: You will
Mary: I won’t
Mrs. Medlock: Be quiet Miss Mary / Be quiet I say;
Mary: I’ll only be quiet / If you go away.
Mrs. Medlock: Now listen Miss Mary get out of bed / Your Breakfast is ready and the sun’s overhead / Take off your nightgown under your wrap / If you don’t behave girl I’ll give you a slap
Mary: I’ll scream
Martha: No you won’t
Mary: I’ll scream
Martha: No you won’t
Mary: I’ll scream
Martha: No you won’t
Mary: I’ll scream
Martha: No you won’t
Mary: I’ll scream and scream until I’m blue / Before I do what you tell me to.
Mrs. Medlock: You may have screamed in India / We’ve heard some funny tales / About them foreign countries / But we never scream in the dales.
Mary: I will
Martha: You won’t
Mary: I will
Martha: You won’t
Mary: I will
Martha: You won’t, you won’t
OTHER LITTLE GIRLS
Mary: I’m so lonely / If only there was / Another little girl.
Other girls have other little girls / To play with / Spend the day with;
Other little girls have other little girls / To talk with / And to walk with;
They race and chase each other / Perhaps they have a brother / And a kind and caring mother / Other little girls;
Other little girls have other little girls / To spend the day with / Skip and play with / Other little girls are lucky / I wish I were a lucky girl.
MISSELTHWAITE HALL
Mrs. Medlock: When she was alive the house was gay / Sunny smiles and laughter every day; / It seemed she made the sun to shine / Or is that just a dream of mine?
Truscott: When she was alive we all had fun / Not just them upstairs but everyone; / Handsome horses filled the stables
Mrs. Medlock: Silver dishes graced the tables.
Truscott: Picnics, parties, dances, a ball; / Oh the world and his wife came to Misselthwaite Hall
Mrs. Medlock: But now that she’s gone / And the dark has grown stronger; / The heart of the house / Is beating no longer. / Now it is quite friendless / No one comes to call;
Truscott: The only faces that you see / Are dead ones on the wall.
Martha: The dining room is shrouded / The silver put away; / Each evening quiet as the last
Martha; Truscott; Mrs. Medlock: Each evening as each day.
Truscott: But when she was alive the house was gay
Martha: Sunny smiles and laughter every day
Martha; Truscott; Mrs. Medlock: It seemed she made the sun to shine / Or is that just a dream of mind.
Martha: Picnics, parties, dances, a ball! / Oh the world and his wife came to Misselthwaite Hall / But now that she’s gone / And the dark has grown stronger;
Martha; Truscott; Mrs. Medlock: The heart of the house / Is beating no longer. / Poor old Misselthwaite Hall.
THE SECRET GARDEN
Mary: I’ve always dreamt of somewhere / Where I would feel at home / A place that I could play in / And call my very own.
Perhaps this secret garden / Behind its wall of stone; / Is what I have been searching for / Where I’ll not feel alone.
If only I could find a key / And open up the door; / I’d find a secret wonderland / That I’ve been searching for.
A very special kind of land / A land of let’s pretend; / Pretend that someone cares for me / And I have got a friend.
[Walking through the gardens, Mary hears the robin, she chases it and stumbles across a key! It is the key to the door into the secret garden. Mary opens the door and enters]
Mary: (spoken) It’s like no other garden I’ve seen before. Everything is grey and misty…I must be the first person to see it in fourteen years. (sung) The robin he must be a friend / For he showed me the key; / And now there are the three of us / The garden, him and me; / Yes, the garden, him and me.
GIVE IT A TRY
Dickon: I thought that I would like to play / A tune upon the flute; / I tried and tried but still no sound / The flute remained quite mute.
I persevered and all at once / The flute began to play; / A merry little country tune / And I was well away.
Now, Miss Mary, You try hard / And really have a go; / Take a breath and purse your lips / And blow and blow and blow!
Give it a try and see and see what happens / You never know until you do / Give it a try and see / Whatever you want could be / After 1, 2, 3 / Give it a try.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes / That’s the only way you learn / If you fail first time / It’s not a crime / Just take another turn. [repeat stanza]
Give it a try and see what happens
Mary: You never know till you do;
Dickon: Give it a try and see
Mary: Whatever you want could be
Dickon: After 1, 2, 3 / Give it a try!
Dickon; Mary: Maybe you will / Maybe you won’t / But how do you know if you don’t / Give it a try / Give it a try!
LILLIAN
Craven: How can I live a life without love? / How can I live without you? / Poets have said without love man’s dead / Nothing could be more true.
Lillian, Lillian / Lovely laughing Lillian / Lillian of the dark brown eyes.
Lillian, Lillian / Lively living Lillian / Lillian how my poor heart cries.
Come back to me for just an hour / Before the flowers fall; / All I have of you now is just / A picture on the wall.
Lillian, Lillian / Lost and loving Lillian / Lillian gone beyond recall.
NIGHTFOLK
Dickon: When the sun sinks and twilight descends / I say goodbye to my daytime friends; / When the moon rises and the stars come out / My friends are nightfolk around and about.
My friend the fox when the evening grows nigh / Puts on his socks and looks up to the sky; / My friend the mole when he gets out of bed / Slips through the hole as the sun becomes red.
Me and my friends will give you a hand / Together we’ll make this garden so grand / Mary your secret’s safe with us / Animals that you can trust.
My friend the stoat when he puts on his hat / Buttons his coat and then visits the rat; / My friend the trout when he opens one eye / Looks round about for the fisherman’s fly. [repeat refrain]
My friend the badger goes roundabout / He’s getting on I’m afraid rather stout;  / But the otter my chum when the stars above gleam / Glides from his home and slides down the stream. [repeat refrain]
When the sun sinks and twilight descends / I say hello to my night-time friends. / Night Folk.
THE LITTLE RAJAH
Mary: He sat upon his elephant / As a knight sits on his charger.
Colin: The little Rajah?
Mary: The little Rajah
Colin: He sat upon his elephant / Just like a charger?
Mary: He was hung about with gold things, / Precious stones and other old things / As he came along the great trunk road
Colin: As he came along the great trunk road
Mary: A million people cheered with joy / As they knelt before this boy
Colin: The little Rajah?
Mary: The little Rajah.
Colin: How very odd, was he a god this little Rajah?
Mary: He was a child just like you
Colin: He was a child just like you
Mary: He was a child just like me
Colin: He was a child just like me
Mary: As he came along the great trunk road
Colin: As he came along the great trunk road
Mary: When he couldn’t go to sleep / Then his servants used to weep
Colin: The little Rajah?
Mary: The little Rajah
Colin: He couldn’t sleep, the servants weep / The little Rajah
Mary: But his Ayah always said / They should sing to him instead / He was just a child like you and me
Colin (sleepily): He was just a child like you and me
Mary: He was just a child like you and me. / He sat upon his elephant / As a knight sits on a charger / The little Rajah / The little Rajah
ROSES
Ben: When I was a lad I was after the girls / And the girls they were all after me; / Alice and Daisy, Clarice and Maisie / Would ask me back to tea. / Then we would walk then we would talk / Don’t knows what we talked about; / We just talked we didn’t do nowt.
When I was a man, things moved very fast / And nothing was faster than me; / Dilys and Phylis, Doris and Jane / And it wasn’t just talking and tea! / But of that stuff I’d at last had enough / God knows I’d no wish to be wed; / So I counted my roses instead.
Roses can’t answer you back / Roses don’t fret if you’re late / Roses don’t say / Where you been all day? / Roses don’t mind if they wait.
A rose don’t go pale / If a man has his ale / Or throw a plate at his nose; / Roses don’t riot / Roses stay quiet / That’s why my love is a rose.
Roses don’t borrow your shirt / Roses don’t thwack you with broom / Roses don’t fuss / And here is the plus / You don’t have to buy them perfume.
‘Cos all that they need / Is a prune and a weed / To help them when it snows; / And when it starts raining / They’re never complaining / That’s why my love is a rose
Girls approaching their forties / Look on the future with gloom / But roses get even more lovely / When they’re in full bloom.
Roses don’t know how to nag / Roses is never a bore / Roses in bed / Just lays down their head / And when they’re asleep they don’t snore.
A rose don’t get cross / ‘Cos she knows you’re the boss / And when her petals close; / Roses don’t cry / They just say “goodbye” / That’s why my love is a rose. / That’s why my love is a rose.
DAI AND I
Martha: I have a boy who lives in the dales / His ma’s from Swansea so I call him Dai, / They live in a mean, red house called “The Chalet” / We don’t want one like that do Dai and I. / We want a little house, high upon the moor. / That is where we’ll live when we are wed, / A lovely modern kitchen, shining spick and span / And upstairs in our room we’ll have a big, brass bed.
Dai and I we will live together / In the wintry weather, we’ll be warm and glad; / Dai and I both of us together / We’ll raise a pretty daughter and a strong, brave lad.
We will go to Chapel with little Beth and Mark / She is in the choir, singing like a lark.
Dai and I won’t want any other person as a lover / All our married life; / We will be happy with each other / For he will be my hubby and I his wife.
Years will come and years will go, hair becoming grey, / Movements getting slower, slower every day. / Dai and I have worked it out between us / There behind the Chapel, where the laurels screen us; / That is where we’ll lie together / Dai and I.
THAT’S SPRING
Dickon: Buds breaking on the barren trees / A soft something in the morning breeze
Mary: That’s Spring?
Dickon: That’s Spring / It makes you want to sing.
Spring is when the farmer sows his summer oats / And when sheep in pastures lose their winter coats; / Spring is when the grocer orders Easter cakes / When the birds start building and the badger wakes.
Spring is when the gardener sees to his delight / That lots of lovely snowdrops have sprung up overnight; / Spring is when the squirrels fluff their bushy tails / Spring is splendid everywhere / But extra good in the dales
That’s Spring!
Mary: That’s Spring?
Dickon: That’s Spring! / That’s Spring, That’s Spring / It makes you want to sing / That’s Spring, That’s Spring / It changes everything; / It makes you want to Laugh Ha! Ha! / It makes you want to fling / Your hat into the air and shout / That’s Spring That’s Spring That’s Spring!
Spring’s the start of cricket. Howzat! The players cry / And each lad at the wicket thinks he’s C. B. Fry / Spring’s when days are brighter and the wind less keen
Mary: When your feet seem lighter and the grass is green
Dickon: Spring’s when things start growing in every garden bed
Mary: And Martha’s cheeks start glowing warm and rosy red
Dickon: Spring’s when Ben’s rheumatics take a bit of a rest
Dickon; Mary: Out of all the seasons it’s the one we love the best!
[Both repeat “That’s Spring, It makes you want to sing” refrain]
GIVE IT A TRY
Ben: I thought that I would like to grow / A real prize-winning marrow; / I made a frame from bits of wood / Took from old wheel barrow.
I tended it both night and day / I watched it grow and grow; / Then took it in a horse and cart / T’ Agricultural show.
The Lord Lieutenant laughed and said / “By gum thou’s got some nouse; / Thou’s grown a winning marrow Ben / As big as Harewood House.”
Ben; Dickon; Mary; Martha: Give it a try and see what happens / You never know till you do; / Give it a try and see / Whatever you want could be / So tell us what happened to you?
Dickon: I thought that I would like to try / To heal a wounded sparrow / Its wing had been quite broke in two / By some lad’s bow and arrow;
Our Martha took one look and said / “To help was all in vain” / But I kept on and suddenly / The poor thing moved again.
Now I kept trying best I could / Until one April day, / When sun were up and wind blew soft / My sparrow flew away.
[All four repeat refrain]
Mary: I thought that I would like to try / And find myself a friend; / I thought that if I found one / My unhappiness would end.
Martha: And so you did Miss Mary dear / And left off being sad; / And now to everyone’s surprise / You’re really not half bad.
Mary: Now Colin you must try to stand / Before the set of sun; / And after standing you must try / To walk and then to run
Dickon: Yes Colin you must try to stand / Yes, really really stand; / Just put your feet upon the ground
Ben: Eh lad, that’s proper grand.
Dickon: Pull yourself right up / No Colin you won’t fall / Stand up straight, shoulders back
Ben: Eh lad, you aren’t half tall.
Dickon: Now take a step, don’t try to talk / And now another…
Dickon; Ben; Mary; Martha: He can walk.
Colin (spoken): I can walk, I can walk, I shall live forever and ever!
[Other four repeat refrain]
Maybe you will, maybe you won’t / But how do you know if you don’t? / Give it a try. / Give it a try!!
LILLIAN (REPRISE)
[Literally just the last half of the original song again]
THAT’S SPRING (REPRISE)
[The “That’s Spring, it makes you want to sing” refrain again, but sung by Mary, Dickon, Ben, Martha, and Colin, the latter partially as a solo]
THE FINALE
Craven: Is this the boy I locked away / Standing straight and true? / I can’t believe how much he’s changed, / I can’t believe he’s you!
I know I haven’t given you / The love a father should / Forgive me son, for what has passed / I ask you if you would.
My heart’s been like this garden / Locked up and alone / Now I must beg your pardon / For the love I’ve never shown.
From now this house will sing again / We’ll open every door/ Together we’ll begin again / It’s Spring again once more / Yes! It’s Spring again once more.
Company: From now this house will sing again / We’ll open every door / Together we’ll begin again / It’s Spring again once more
Craven: Yes!
Company: It’s Spring again once more.

The complete list of films featured in 2021′s “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 403 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This number is up from last year’s count of 327 and is the second-highest number of films I have ever featured in this marathon (behind the 410 films from 2016). Despite the number, this remains only a fraction of the nearly 5,000 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards. This year’s marathon was harder to plan than usual due to the fact it was presented in alphabetical order - with the exception of any write-ups I did.

It’s been a long, long time since Broadway last held a Tony Awards ceremony.
Tonight, after a 27-month hiatus, the event honoring Broadway’s best plays and musicals is back.
There will be plenty of awards — there are 25 competitive categories this year — and lots of speeches.
But the thrust of the evening is a little different: reminding viewers that Broadway has reopened after a disastrously long pandemic shutdown, and hoping that a showcase of show tunes and sentiment will persuade audiences to return. There are now 15 productions running on Broadway, and that number is growing every week, but the pandemic is not over, and tourism remains down, so the industry is looking for a boost.
The event is part streaming, and part network.
This year’s Tony Awards are taking place, live and in-person, at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theater, starting at 7 p.m. Eastern, and scheduled to end at 11.
Most of the awards will be announced during the first two hours, at a ceremony hosted by the six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald. That segment of the evening will be viewable only on the streaming service Paramount+.
The second half of the evening will consist of a concert at which stars of the theater world will perform classic and contemporary show tunes. That portion of the event, called “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!,” will be hosted by Leslie Odom Jr. (a Tony winner for “Hamilton”) and broadcast on CBS, and it will include three big awards, for best musical, best play and best play revival.
Because the coronavirus pandemic is ongoing, the ceremony is restricted in many ways.
The red carpet is shorter than usual. There is no official after-party. (A request for a permit to hold one on the street was rejected by the city.)
And the audience watching in person will be limited — the Winter Garden holds 1,500 people, compared to 6,000 at Radio City Music Hall, where the event was often held in previous years. All of the attendees must show proof of vaccination, and they are being asked to wear masks throughout the event.
The awards ceremony will honor plays and musicals that opened during a pandemic-shortened eligibility period — from April 26, 2019, to Feb. 19, 2020. Only 18 shows were eligible for awards — about half as many as usual — and only 15 scored nominations.
The most-nominated shows are the musicals “Jagged Little Pill,” with 15, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” with 14, and “Tina — The Tina Turner Musical,” with 12, as well as “Slave Play,” which with 12 is the most-nominated play in Tonys history.
The ceremony, originally scheduled to take place in June 2020, has been repeatedly delayed and rethought; the nominations, chosen by 41 theater experts who saw every eligible show, were announced last October, and electronic voting, by 778 producers, performers and other industry insiders, took place in March. The ballots were stored by the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche LLP, which somehow has managed to keep them secret ever since.
There are several unusual aspects to this season’s Tonys race.
All of the nominees for best score are plays — an odd situation caused by the fact that three of the four musicals that opened before the pandemic were jukebox musicals, meaning they did not have original scores, and the fourth was shut out by nominators.
In one category, best leading actor in a musical, there is only one nominee, Aaron Tveit of “Moulin Rouge!” He will win if he gets a positive vote from 60 percent of those who cast ballots in that race.
A starry concert will dominate the televised portion of the evening.
The Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, the two organizations that present the Tony Awards, decided, in discussions with CBS, that the portion of the evening with the broadest reach — that is, on network television — would be primarily a concert.
The goal is to highlight Broadway’s talent, and to remind viewers of the pleasures of live theater, with the hope that some of those viewers will then buy tickets to a show as theaters in New York (and around the world) seek to rebuild audiences.
What kinds of performances can you expect?
There will be, as per tradition, a razzly-dazzly opening number, led by Odom, at the start of the concert, celebrating Broadway and its shows. The evening will appeal to theater lovers’ nostalgia: Jennifer Holliday will recreate her performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from “Dreamgirls” (which opened in 1981); Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell are expected to perform from “Ragtime” (1998); Marissa Jaret Winokur and Matthew Morrison from “Hairspray” (2002); and Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel from “Wicked” (2003).
Each of the productions nominated for the best musical Tony Award — “Jagged Little Pill,” “Moulin Rouge!” and “Tina” — will perform, as always, but this year those performances were recorded in advance inside the theaters where those musicals are running. (Why? To reduce the cost to the pandemic-damaged productions. In ordinary years, producers spend several hundred thousand dollars per musical to staff and stage live numbers at the Tony Awards.)
Two shows that are receiving special Tony Awards will also present live performances. David Byrne will lead the cast of “American Utopia,” his concert show that is now running, for a second time, on Broadway, while Lin-Manuel Miranda will be featured in a closing sketch from “Freestyle Love Supreme,” the improv group he co-founded, which is scheduled to begin its second Broadway run on Oct. 7, followed by a national tour starting in San Francisco.
What else? John Legend will perform with the cast of “Ain’t Too Proud,” a jukebox musical about the Temptations that is slated to resume performances on Broadway on Oct. 16. Daniel J. Watts, a Tony nominee for “Tina,” is expected to perform a spoken-word tribute to the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, which is receiving a special Tony Award for its work on racial justice. And, at some point, Ben Platt and Anika Noni Rose are expected to pay tribute to high school theater students with a song from “Sunday in the Park With George.
”Plenty of other boldface names will be taking part in the broadcast, either as presenters or performers, including Darren Criss, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jordan Fisher, Andrew Garfield, Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cyndi Lauper, John Lithgow, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Black Thought and many others.
The awards show is being executive produced by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, who have put the ceremony together for years. Weiss is also directing the event, and it is being choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, a Tony winner for his work on “Ain’t Too Proud.”
The nominees for best musical are all jukebox shows.
The three nominees for best musical are “Jagged Little Pill,” “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” and “Tina — The Tina Turner Musical.”All of them are jukebox musicals — meaning that their scores consist of previously recorded pop songs — and all of them opened in 2019.
The three nominated musicals are reopening this fall. “Moulin Rouge!,” which is an adaptation of the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, began performances on Friday; “Tina,” which is a biomusical about the life and career of Tina Turner, returns Oct. 8; and “Jagged Little Pill,” a contemporary family drama inspired by the Alanis Morissette album, returns Oct. 21.
Only one show with an original score opened before the pandemic — “The Lightning Thief” — but it was shut out by nominators. Several other musicals with original scores were slated to open in 2020, but didn’t make it to opening night before theaters shut down.A fourth jukebox musical, “Girl From the North Country,” opened right before the shutdown but was deemed ineligible for awards because not enough Tony voters managed to see it. That show, a drama inspired by the songs of Bob Dylan, is scheduled to resume performances Oct. 13.
There are no nominees for best musical revival, because the only one that opened before the pandemic, “West Side Story,” also was not seen by enough voters. And now that production is over — its producers have decided not to reopen it.
Keep an eye on the play categories for some drama.
As hard as it may be to believe, the last time a play by a Black writer won the Tony Award for best play was in 1987, when August Wilson won for “Fences.”
That could change this year, when the leading contender is “Slave Play,” a daring drama by Jeremy O. Harris that uses an imaginary form of couples therapy to explore the lingering impact of slavery. The play scored more Tony nominations — 12 — than any in history; it won strong review from critics and managed to achieve a level of buzz that is rare for any play, although, like most plays, it ended its run without recouping its capitalization costs.
But “Slave Play” was also polarizing, leaving an opening for another drama to claim the prize. The most likely upset would be by “The Inheritance,” a two-part drama by Matthew López about two generations of gay male New Yorkers. That play was heralded in London, but was greeted with far more skepticism in New York; its run was also unprofitable, and was cut a few days short by the pandemic.
The most likely winner in the category of best play revival will be “A Soldier’s Play” or “Betrayal.”
“A Soldier’s Play” is a 1981 drama by Charles Fuller, about the murder of a Black sergeant in the U.S. Army, that won the Pulitzer Prize when it was first published. It was then adapted into a Hollywood film, but didn’t make it to Broadway until 2020. The production, directed by Kenny Leon, starred Blair Underwood and David Alan Grier, and was presented by the nonprofit Roundabout Theater Company.
“Betrayal” is a 1978 play by Harold Pinter about an extramarital affair. The revival was a commercial production, transferred from London, directed by Jamie Lloyd and starring Tom Hiddleston.
And what about the actors?
Eight acting prizes will be given out tonight — four for work in musicals, and four for work in plays.
The musical prizes all have heavy favorites, and the favorites would all be first-time Tony winners.
Look for Adrienne Warren to win the leading actress in a musical prize for her superhuman performance as Tina Turner in “Tina,” and for Lauren Patten to win as featured actress for her showstopping vocals in “Jagged Little Pill.”
Aaron Tveit, the only nominee for leading actor, should easily pick up that prize for playing the bohemian Christian in “Moulin Rouge!” (he needs to win support from 60 percent of those who cast ballots in the category to do so), while his co-star, Danny Burstein, is the favorite in the featured actor category, for playing the impresario Harold Zidler.
The play categories are thought to be much tighter, in part because there are fewer voters — to participate in any Tony race, a voter had to have seen each nominated performance, and that narrowed the pool of qualified voters.
But watch for one possible record to be set: Lois Smith, 90, is a leading contender for best featured actress in a play, for her work in “The Inheritance.” If she wins, she will become the oldest person ever to win a Tony Award for acting, a record previously held by Cicely Tyson, who won at 88.
