UMD Video: A History of film on the PSP

The 1990s through to the early 2000s was a frantic time in the development of portable media devices, from mini TVs to CD and cassette players, and of course phones, MP3 players, and video game consoles. By 2010, consumers could take entire libraries of media content wherever they went. Movies and TV shows, however, were relatively late to the party, limited by large file sizes and the bulkiness of laptops and portable DVD players at the time.

Various attempts were made in the late-nineties and early-noughties to bring affordable video-playing devices to the market, including the VideoNow unit that would play kids TV shows in black-and-white. In 2004 Nintendo entered the market in collaboration with 4Kids Entertainment in the form of GBA Video: cartridges that stored episodes from children's shows and even a few movies for playback on the Game Boy Advance. The quality of the footage wasn't great, however, with GBA Video playing in 240x160 resolution—and with a chugging frame rate. Sales weren't great and the format didn't catch on.

Nevertheless, GBA Video did prove that distributors could use the existing install-base of portable game consoles to sell more than just games. Console manufacturers were beginning to realise this too—Nokia's N-Gage was a phone/game console cross-over that could also play video and music, while Nintendo's DS line of devices were marketed as digital planners and cognitive training tools as well as gaming units. Sony, meanwhile, had experience in the multimedia game with their PlayStation 2 home console. The inclusion of the ability to read DVDs was a major coup, giving Sony a big edge over competitors like Sega's Dreamcast.

With the success of the PS2, it was perhaps only natural that Sony would try to replicate this multimedia magic when they entered the portable console space with their PlayStation Portable, launched in December 2004 in Japan, March 2005 in North America, and September 2005 in Europe. Of course, a properly portable device was never going to be big enough to support DVDs, so they had to develop a brand new format that was up to the task. Sony's solution? The Universal Media Disc, or UMD.

UMD is a proprietary miniature optical disc format that can hold 1.8GB of data. It came encased in a plastic shield to protect it from knocks and scratches, and was only ever used for the PSP. When the PSP was revealed during Sony's press conference at E3 2004, Kaz Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, stressed that Sony saw this console as a multimedia platform, and that the UMD would support full-length films, branded as UMD Video, as well as games. Trailers for Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy XII: Advent Children were shown playing on a PSP unit, and when the US launch date came, the first 1 million PSP Value Packs (priced at $250) contained a Spider-Man 2 UMD. Masa Chatani, Chief Technology Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, expressed great enthusiasm in media interviews, saying: 'In the U.S. We have already met with the major studios. They pretty much love the PSP and the quality of the UMD.'

Sony announced an initial UMD price range of $19.95 to $28.95, with the lower range applying to movies previously released on DVD, and the higher range for new films launching on UMD and DVD at the same time. Each UMD would contain the full-length movie encoded in 720x480, the same as an average DVD, but this would be scaled down to 480x272 when playing on the PSP's screen. Due to storage constraints (the average DVD could hold 4.7GB of data to the UMD's 1.8GB), special features such as deleted scenes and 'making of' reels would often be completely absent. And unlike PSP games, UMD Videos were region-locked.

Despite these limitations, early signs were encouraging for UMD Video. Within a few months the format could boast 70 available titles in the US and over 500,000 overall sales. Available titles grew to over 200 within half a year, including pornographic titles in Japan, encouraged by the PSP's own strong sales. Two movies released by Sony Pictures, Resident Evil 2 and House of Flying Daggers, passed 100,000 sales within a month—whereas the first DVD to pass that mark, Air Force One, took 9 months. Sony UK chief Ray Maguire said in October 2006 that Sony was 'pretty pleased with UMD,' commenting that it had 'a fantastic attachment rate'.

It wasn't long before cracks began to show, however: and that isn't just a reference to the UMD casing's tendency to break, rendering the disc unusable. Film studios and retailers started to express concerns about the format's long-term sales performance. In the US, Wal-Mart and Target had already begun pulling away from UMD Video in early 2006, while anonymous executives from Universal Studios Home Entertainment told the Hollywood Reporter in March 2006: 'It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb, like Blu-ray.' An executive from Paramount similarly said of UMD: 'No one's even breaking even on them.' In response to such criticism, Benjamin Feingold of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment blamed the disappointing sales on people ripping DVDs and then playing them on PSP via the SD card slot.

Sony began teasing an adapter to play UMD on television, and the company continued to show public optimism about the format even as major studios and retailers pulled the plug entirely. PSP senior marketing manager John Koller told Pocket Gamer in June 2007 that: 'The future of movies on UMD is great. We saw a 35 per cent growth year-on-year from 2005 to 2006, which clearly demonstrates a growing interest.' Significantly, sales in Japan had jumped tenfold following major price-cuts. Koller said this was also the result of movie distributors 'calibrating' their UMD offerings to target the PSP's primary user base: males under the age of 25. This helps explain the composition of UMD Video's library, which is heavily weighted towards action, sci-fi, and comedy films.

Despite the positive signals coming from Sony, from 2007 things started to get quieter on the UMD Video front. In part this was down to the industry's growing focus on digital distribution, and while Koller insisted that the digital pivot did not spell the end for UMD, in 2009 Sony launched the digital-only PSP Go model. And, of course, the company scrapped UMD support altogether for its next portable console, the PlayStation Vita.

Nevertheless, the UMD Video library continued to grow steadily. The most complete list online counts over 650 video discs, but the list is missing many known entries, and the real figure may be more in the region of 800. When compared to the 36 cartridges released for GBA Video, UMD Video looks like a runaway success, with far greater support from third parties and a much more diverse library including action films, comedies, TV shows, anime, live music concerts, cinema classics, Chinese hits, horrors, and yes, adult films. All three Matrix films and all eight Harry Potter films were released as UMDs, along with numerous Batman movies, Academy Award-winning masterpieces like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and episodes of popular TV shows such as Doctor Who. ***

Sony Pictures released its last UMD Video discs in 2010, and the final releases overall came from Warner Home Video in 2011 with a full 8-UMD Harry Potter box-set. And with that, so ended the last major attempt at a game console-specific proprietary video format. With so many easy ways to watch video content in our hands today, it is very unlikely that we will see anything like it again.

These discs haven't yet become a major focus in the collecting world, but there are reasons to believe that might change. In 2018 UMD Video entered into the top-10 most-contributed formats on Filmogs. And as the noughties become more distant and the PSP becomes a 'retro' console, I suspect UMD Video will take its proper place as both an interesting oddity and a genuinely intriguing piece of media history.

@vbartilucci Yes, OMG Yes.  While I consider myself basically the same age as Super Sentai and I take solace in knowing Ultraman and Kamen Rider will always be older than I am.  There are a few things that I have considered staples of my life that I am older than.

For example, I am older than the ATARI VCS/2600 which was released in 1977.

That automatically means I am older than Nintendo as a video game company (not as an entity though thank goodness as they were a playing card company starting in 1889).

The final Showa Era (well official Showa Era) Godzilla film was released the year I was born with Terror of Mechagodzilla.

Come the beginning of next month, I will have lived during the reign of three Japanese Emperors (Showa, Heisei and Reiwa).  For context, there were only two Eras before Showa (Meiji and Taisho) since the foundation of modern Japan in 1868!

I have lived through two entire cycles of the Godzilla franchise: Heisei and Millennium and am in the middle of a third, the Legendary Era.

Oh and every generation of the console wars from the weird Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision struggle in the early 1980s to the Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis and then Playstation vs. Saturn vs. Nintendo 64 to the end of Sega as a console manufacturer with the failure of the Dreamcast (R.I.P. Dreamcast) and its replacement by Microsoft and their X-Box Consoles.

Oh and I have seen EVERY SINGLE Star Wars movie first run in the theater starting with a Drive-In showing of the original in 1978 when I was three!

Not to mention the rise of the Internet, online gaming and streaming services threatening to make physical media entirely obsolete.  I have lived through a lot, seen so much change and I am glad I have.

The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is a home video game console that was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the successor to the PlayStation and is the second installment in the PlayStation lineup of consoles. It competed with Sega's Dreamcast, Microsoft's Xbox, and Nintendo's GameCube in the sixth generation of video game consoles.

Announced in 1999, the PlayStation 2 was the first PlayStation console to offer backwards compatibility for its predecessor's DualShock controller, as well as for its games. The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all time, selling over 155 million units, with 150 million confirmed by Sony in 2011.[10] More than 3,874 game titles have been released for the PS2 since launch, and more than 1.5 billion copies have been sold.[11] Sony later manufactured several smaller, lighter revisions of the console known as Slimline models in 2004 and well on, and in 2006, announced and launched its successor, the PlayStation 3.

Even with the release of its successor, the PlayStation 2 remained popular well into the seventh generation and continued to be produced until January 4, 2013, when Sony finally announced that the PlayStation 2 had been discontinued after 13 years of production – one of the longest runs for a video game console. Will Nintendo end up like Atari and Sega? | Israel Joffe

In the early 1980s, after years of being on top of the world, Atari made the fatal mistake of investing millions of dollars into an E.T. video game, based on the wildly successful film of the same name, only to see it flop. It is regarded as the biggest flop in video game history. Landfills were filled with millions of unsold E.T games due to many publications labeling it as the ‘worst video game of all time.’

Then came the crash.

The video game crash of 1983, also known as 'Atari shock' in Japan, was a massive recession of the video game industry that occurred from 1983 to 1985. Revenues that had peaked at around $3.2 billion in 1983, fell to around $100 million by 1985. The crash was a serious event that brought an abrupt end to what is considered the second generation of console video gaming in North America.

The crash almost destroyed the then-fledgling industry and led to the bankruptcy of several companies producing home computers and video game consoles in the region, including the fastest-growing U.S. company in history at that point, Atari. It lasted about two years, and many business analysts of the time expressed doubts about the long-term viability of video game consoles.

There were several reasons for the crash, but the main cause, according to Electronic Games Magazine was the saturation of the market with hundreds of mostly low-quality games which resulted in the loss of consumer confidence. The full effects of the industry crash would not be felt until 1985.

Stores stopped promoting video games and Time Magazine as well as other publications said that ‘video games’ were a fad destined to the go the way of the ‘pet rock.'

But then Nintendo came along and proved all the critics wrong.

According to Steven Kent, author of 'The Ultimate History of Video Games,' sometime after the crash, Nintendo approached Atari about using their name to promote a revolutionary and advanced 8-bit system. Nintendo didn't believe their own name carried any weight in America. So Atari initially agreed. Until they saw a competing system known as Coleco Vision showcasing Donkey Kong at an electronics convention. Enraged at the thought that Nintendo gave them the rights to Donkey Kong behind their back, the deal went nowhere.

Nintendo had to go it alone.

And they did. The Nintendo Entertainment System made its debut in the United States in 1985.

They knew that stores had no confidence in video games and were not ready to start putting them up in their computer section.

Using a brilliant marketing scheme, Nintendo included a robot known as ROB with the Nintendo Entertainment System and stores began selling the system in the toy section, rather than the computer section and it took off.

Before long, over 30 million consoles were sold, eventually topping out 61 million consoles.

Nintendo was king in America, Sega was number two and Atari went down to number 3.

Fast forward to 2005.

Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the hand held gaming industry with the Game Boy Advance and DS and kids everywhere loved Pokemon but they became a distant number 3 in the home console wars. The Nintendo Cube was in third place compared to Sony’s PlayStation 2 and the XBOX.

Nintendo had to do something revolutionary if they didn't want to end up just making video games for other systems which was the ultimate fate of Sega and Atari.

Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto, the man responsible for legendary games like Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. and more, felt that video game controllers, with all their buttons were just way too complicated. He wanted something that anybody could just pick up and play with.

The Nintendo Wii came out in 2006 as a system that lets you control the action on screen with your hands and body as opposed to only a controller.

And it was a monstrous success.

Before long, the competing systems, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were just relegated to 2nd and 3rd place against the new juggernaut Nintendo created.

Their stock went from $19 a share all the way to more than $120 a share.

Nintendo was king once again.

Then in 2012, Nintendo felt it was time to move to the next level and introduce the Wii U.

But it wasn't a huge success.

The Wii U debuted in November of 2012 and was off to a strong start with over 400,000 units sold that month. However, sales started to dwindle in January as the Wii U sold only 57,000 units in the US.

By comparison, the original Wii sold 435,000 in January 2007, two months after launch.

Some suggest that Nintendo may have made the ‘Dreamcast’ error.

That error is when a console maker decides it is time to advance to the next level, way before their competition does. It is this mistake than sank Sega’s Dreamcast in early 2000s, which has been dubbed one of the most underrated systems of all time because of its high quality games but lack of promotion from retailers.

Gamers just weren't ready yet to buy a new system after investing their money in games for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation and that is what lead to the downfall of Sega's Dreamcast and ended their nearly two decades stint in manufacturing consoles. Today, they make video games instead of consoles.

Some industry figures have claimed that the Wii U is not in fact an 8th generation console, with many citing the hardware as the reason and thus the problem when promoting the system against the technically superior XBox One and Playstation 4.

Reggie Fils-Aime, COO of Nintendo of America, however, has noted that similar comments were made in 2006 when the Wii first launched and that the Wii ended up taking a majority share in the console market anyway.

There is no telling what Nintendo will do now that Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One are hammering away at their share of the market.

Even their most recent handheld system the Nintendo 3DS, followed by the 2DS failed to live up to expectations and their stock took a beating.

Still, Nintendo maintained its 9 million Wii U sales forecast for the fiscal year through 2014. Wii U software showed improvement in the Q2 period, reaching 5.27 million units, a 400 percent jump on the previous quarter. Nintendo has credited the software growth to key first-party releases such as Pikmin 3 and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD with more classic titles still to come.

If history proves anything, Nintendo doesn’t give up easily and with tons of titles like Zelda, Super Mario, Pokemon, Metroid and millions of loyal fans, it doesn't look like Nintendo is ready to go the way of Sega and Atari just yet.

Long time Nintendo fan and e-commerce expert Joshua  Rabinovitch, says dependence on classic titles just isn’t enough. “Nintendo has to get ‘virtual’ and get over the fear of Virtual reality” he said.

“When Virtual Boy collapsed in the 1990s, it took the wind out of them for that type of technology, but with this new push for virtual reality by Oculus and Sony, they have to do something revolutionary like come out with a virtual system.  Unlike the 1990s, technology is finally ready and the public is clamoring for it.”

History of the Console Wars

Video games have become a huge societal norm. They are, in a way, everywhere around us. Video games are played on computers, home consoles, arcade cabinets and even on our smartphones, arguably, the most personal devices that we have. At any given moment, someone is playing a video game. It is one of the most profitable industries in entertainment, even more so than Hollywood, but it wasn’t always like this.

Before the dawn of video games, console manufacturers had to duke it out and vie for the consumer’s attention. And with this competition came the console wars. There are 8 “generations” of home video game consoles that all compete for the coveted spot in our living rooms. Here they are in a nutshell:

Second Generation: While the first generation started four years before this generation, there was no true “console war.” It was simply the Magnavox Odyssey which became the first home console.

The second generation is what spawned the infamous console wars, with the introduction of the Fairchild Channel F, Atari 2600, Magnavox Odyssey 2 and the Intellivision. The Atari 2600 quickly beat out the competition as the most popular console, with other manufacturers even including Atari 2600 adapters.

Third Generation: Following the video game crash of 1983, a new player emerged on the scene with what was to become one of the most influential video game consoles of all time: the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). SEGA also released their console, the SG-1000, during this generation. People didn’t know it at the time, but SEGA and Nintendo would become rivals for generations to come. However, Nintendo won out the third generation console war. This generation also introduced far better graphics.

Fourth Generation: This generation in particular had a large amount of influence over the gaming industry as a whole, as it spawned some of the most popular video game titles and characters in history, like Sonic the Hedgehog, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, and Street Fighter II. Nintendo was still the largest player in the world with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) although SEGA had a large amount of success with the SEGA Genesis. This generation also saw the end of an era, with the once reigning Atari having to end its home console venture after the failure of the Atari Jaguar.

Fifth Generation: Another significant era in the industry’s history, the fifth generation brought a new face in the console wars: Sony’s Playstation. Originally intended to be a CD extension to the SNES through a unique partnership between Sony and Nintendo, the Playstation later became its own individual console after the deal fell through. An unexpected hit, the Playstation went on to become a major contender (eventually winning this generation) in the console wars, selling a whopping 102 million units throughout its lifetime. The Nintendo 64 and SEGA Saturn were also released during this time, with Nintendo only selling some 30 million units and SEGA selling a measly 9.5 million. But Sony wasn’t done yet.

Sixth Generation: Possibly the biggest year for the gaming industry, as it gave us the world’s best-selling console: the Playstation 2. Featuring enhanced graphics, a sleek design and unbeatable exclusives, the Playstation 2 sold a staggering 150 million units. Nintendo was still a major player in the industry. Nintendo’s Gamecube saw moderate success, with 21 million units sold, but it was beaten by another newcomer: Microsoft’s Xbox. The computer software company finally decided to enter the ring and duke it out with companies with well established histories. And against all odds, they managed to come in second place, with the original Xbox selling roughly 24 million units. And with every beginning, there must also be an end. SEGA’s Dreamcast, although somewhat popular, failed to break through to the market, causing SEGA to end production and halt any further hardware releases.

Seventh Generation: Also dubbed the “HD Generation,” this particular era gave rise to high-definition graphics, and consoles that could do more than simply play video games. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all released their newest consoles to the public: the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, respectively. While Sony had incredible success the past two generations, selling some 250 million consoles combined, they came into this generation rather cocky. Although powerful, the Playstation 3 was bulky and expensive, turning gamers off and prompting the hardcore gaming community to choose the Xbox 360. Microsoft’s newest console had more power than it’s predecessor, but was still affordable and featured a wide range of console exclusives and a massive online gaming community. And yet, even with the apparent success over Sony, Microsoft could not best the oldest company still in the fight: Nintendo’s Wii. The console focused on innovative motion controls, and with the release of the popular Wii Sports title, which came bundled with the console at purchase, consumers couldn’t stay away. While hardcore gamers stuck with the Xbox 360, casual gamers of all ages flocked to the Wii, giving Nintendo its first console war win since the fourth generation, with a whopping 101 million units sold.

Eight (Current) Generation: Here we are. The current generation of console gaming. We have had many successes and failures to this point. It has been a whirlwind, but the adventure to today has been well worth it. Currently, the three major consoles fighting it out are the Playstation 4, the Xbox One and the Nintendo Wii U. Nintendo seemed to have rested on their laurels of the Wii’s success, considering not much innovation was brought with the Wii U. However, it did mark the first time that Nintendo made a console capable of high-definition resolution. Unfortunately, it’s lack of third-party support, online gaming community and power caused it to sell only 13 million units. That leaves Microsoft and Sony. While Sony seemed to have learned their lesson from the PS3, by making the PS4 more affordable, sleeker, offering a better online community and focusing heavily on gamers and the gaming community, Microsoft seemed to have taken the exact opposite approach. The Xbox One’s clunky, massive design, lack of gamer-friendly features, and exorbitant price point alienated gamers, making the PS4 the darling of the industry. As of this writing, Sony is currently winning this generation’s war, with an estimated 60 million unit sales, compared to the Xbox One’s estimated 30 million. Who knows how long this generation will last? It could be another 5 years, or maybe even shorter. Whatever the case is, I’m incredibly excited to see what these three major companies bring to the table for the next generation, and how hard they will be fighting to solidify their place in the console wars.

Just in case you are wondering who we are talking about it is the, yeah nah. You will need to listen in to find out.
