Green Lung Renew Connection to the Earth in ‘Woodland Rites’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
London powerhouse-and-a-half GREEN LUNG are back, just one year after capturing the affections of listeners with the Doom Charts-ranking EP, 'Free The Witch' (2018). Their debut LP, 'Woodland Rites' (2019), shows us the London act's true powers, now a five-member strong team with Tom Templar leading the charge on vocals, Scott Masson on guitar, Andrew Cave on bass, Matt Wiseman on Drums, and John Wright on the organ.
"We've been leading up to the themes of Woodland Rites," the band tells me, "since our very first demo Green Man Rising. It's an eight track heavy-psych LP inspired by folk horror and the sense of the uncanny that pervades parts of the British countryside, in the tradition of proto-metal bands like Black Widow, Comus and Coven. Lyrics explore everything from old British folklore like 'Bella in the wych elm' to the Blind Dead movies, and while the emphasis is on heavy psych, wider musical influences are bubbling in the mix, from NWOBHM to Goth rock."
For whatever reason, Green Lung's first record didn't connect with me quite as powerfully as the effort before us. Blending elements of doom, occult rock, and NWOBHM, Woodland Rites is an extraordinarily thoughtful metal record, enhanced by an organ here, vocal harmonies there, singing dual guitars at another crucial moment. Say what you will, Green Lung know how to work their way to a climax! I also loved the way one song lends itself so naturally to another. At times, I had to check to see if I was listening to a B-section of an early section, like some kind of Queen-esque ballade that continues to surprise with unfolding dimensions. The net result was that I was never tempted to leave the record or to skip around to different tracks.

And now we come to the song before us, receiving its worldwide premiere via Doomed & Stoned. "Call of the Coven," Green Lung tells us, "was the last song we wrote for the album, and probably the one that came together quickest. It's a love letter to Blood on Satan's Claw. Fans of the movie will notice that the chorus lyrics reference the chant in the central woodland ritual scene. The song has one of my favourite of Scott's solos on the album and a galloping NWOBHM feel that reminds me of the band Witchfinder General, but I've gender-flipped the lyrics so that instead of getting hunted, the witches are doing the hunting. Green Lung is a pro-witch band!"
I've already tagged this one for me to revisit when Doomed & Stoned considers the Heavy Best of 2019. This is exceptional in every way. Look for Woodland Rites to drop via Kozmik Artifactz on March 20th (pre-order here).
Give ear...
Woodland Rites by GREEN LUNG
Some Buzz
South London-based heavy rock quintet Green Lung have announced details of their debut album. 'Woodland Rites' (2019) will be released on heavyweight vinyl, CD, cassette and digital editions on March 20, the Spring Equinox. The band captured the attention of the international underground in 2018 with the release of their much acclaimed EP, 'Free the Witch,' and spent the year sharing stages with the likes of Conan, Conjurer and Primitive Man before signing to cult Berlin-based label Kozmik Artifactz.
With the addition of new member John Wright on organ, the band have also expanded their horizons musically, voyaging beyond the doomy psych of the EP to explore a spectrum of heavy music. On Let the Devil In they conjure up a blasphemous, arena-baiting hard rock single, while on Templar Dawn they veer into the cavernous (free)masonry of traditional doom metal. The psyched-out, prog-inflected The Ritual Tree attempts to answer the mystery of ‘Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?’ while May Queen is an ergot-tinged ballad of failing harvests and human sacrifice. The overall, irresistible impression is of a young band summoning up the eccentric English spectres of '70s proto-metal, early-'80s NWOBHM and '90s stoner rock and dragging those sounds kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.
Free the Witch EP by GREEN LUNG
Singer Tom Templar said, "With the response to 'Free the Witch,' the introduction of a new member and the chance to write a full LP we've been spurred on to take our sound to the next level -- so expect a pro-witch party album of diabolical riffs, harmonized solos, inescapable hooks and lyrics inspired by folk horror films like The Wicker Man and Blood on Satan's Claw. We hope Woodland Rites will become the soundtrack to many a debauched backwoods Sabbath in 2019."
'Woodland Rites' was recorded and mixed by Wayne Adams (Vodun, Ghold) who reprised his Free The Witch duties at Bear Bites Horse Studios. Mastering was undertaken by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. Woodland Rites will be packaged in hallucinatory artwork by renowned woodcut artist, Richard Wells (The Wicker Man, Doctor Who) on vinyl and CD, with the cassette cover featuring photography by Courtney Brooke.
Green Lung will be on tour in April with Puppy, then touring both the UK and EU with label mates Deathbell in May, with confirmed shows in Paris, London, Liege and Cologne; more information will be available in due course. The band will also appear at HRH Doom vs Stoner alongside Monolord, Orange Goblin and Church of the Cosmic Skull on September 29.
17 April - Southampton - The Joiners 18 April - Bristol - The Exchange 19 April - Birmingham - The Flapper 20 April - Manchester - The Star & Garter 21 April - Glasgow - Garage Attic 22 April - Newcastle - Think Tank 23 April - Nottingham - Bodega Social Club 24 April - Leeds - Brudenell Social Club 25 April - London - Underworld

However, it might continue to change until they get things completed. One of the most typical varieties of supernatural photography is a picture of a ghosting sphere. Project proposal
I began my research into my pathway by Researching salaries, creative freedom and duties of each sector. I have such a range of interests within photography that I struggled to choose one pathway. Something that helped me rectify the problem was a YouTube video called ‘How to choose a direction for your photography career’ in the video it asked two questions ‘what do I want to become known for?’ and what photography when I am doing it makes me lose track of time?’ I decided that I wanted to become known for my morals, reliability, creativity and imagination and the photography which makes me lose track of time is nature and wildlife, travel, product, conceptual and marine/underwater Photography.
I found the personality test very interesting, doing the test allowed me to realise some of my strengths and weaknesses giving me the opportunity to work to improve my weaknesses. This has of course influenced my choice of future career for example I know I wouldn't work well on a fashion shoot because I prefer to work small groups or on my own.
Choosing a sector was a hard decision to make, I want to be able to produce work that I am proud of with a brief that allows me some creative freedom. I have chosen advertising photography with a view to exploring conceptual advertising.
I have chosen this sector because with advertising there are allot of different opportunities for varied briefs like food, clothing, branding and technology.
I also wanted to explore product, interior, postproduction and underwater photography however I've decided that in order to be an advertising photographer I need to to train as one to make it second nature and then if I wish to do the other practices on the side I can.
I have researched into the current trends in advertising photography, the trends correspond with the Getty trends for 2017. New naivety and unfiltered are playing a big part in advertisement because the viewers now want to see relatable advertisements.
Taking this into account I've decided to follow the trend New naivety and virtuality to make it relevant in today's advertising. I have chosen virtuality because we are in the age of constant developing technologies so there will always be a call for technology aimed adverts.
Inspired by the trend new naivety my first shoot it's going to be of a squirrel in the park, using the images of the squirrel I then want to create an amusing advertisement for a technology product. This will be where I incorporate virtuality into the imagery. This shoot will test my ability to use a fast shutter speed to capture the moving animals and my ability to focus. It will also challenge my post-production skills using what I've learned in digital production to copy, paste and position a mobile phone into the photo along with headphones and a logo. I hope that creating a funny and unusual advertising will be memorable to consumer.
My second shoot is inspired by the work of Seymour Templar. He photographs people at social events on their phones, using the LCD screen of the mobile phone to lights the subjects face.
I’m going to have two people sat across from each other at the dinner table, both sat on their phones ignoring one another.
The environment will be low lit and dark apart from the models faces lit up by the LCD screens on their phones. To incorporate a sense of new naivety the models will be wearing party hats to imply socialising and fun contradicting what they are doing in the scene.
Shoot three inspired by the work of Max Cavallari and Eric Pickersgill want to explore the theory of technology taking over and being immersed in social media, how this affects our personalities and interactions with other people. I'm going to ask the public/models to walk in the street going about daily tasks and I'm gonna capture them on their phones ignoring the world around them.
Because funny animals are so on trend within new naivety for my fourth shoot I'm going to do a shoot with my dog, some photos of him being silly which I can turn into an advertisement and some point of view photos by attaching a Go-pro to his collar.
During this project I really wanted to experiment with using Go-pro to perform underwater photography. For shoot five I've decided to do a shoot to advertise either Go-pro itself, a waterproof phone or a brand of wetsuit. I've decided to do this shoot over Christmas whilst at home in Wales. I'll be using the Go-pro hero five with various attachments have also invested in an underwater flash for go-pro, I have not used this yet so I'll need to do a test shoot.
In this module I need to show my technical lighting skills because of this for my sixth shoot I've decided to do a product shoot in the studio using flash lighting. I'll be do a simple product shot of a new item of technology.
For shoot seven I will perform another shoot in the studio using a model, the model will be wearing a VR set. I'm going to use a long exposure to capture moving coloured lights in the background. I may produce this photo by doing two shots one of the lights on one of the model to ensure that the model is in focus.
For shoot eight I'm going to challenge myself with postproduction. I'm going to take a panoramic shot of an open space and then going to edit it to appear as a 360 world. I'm then going to photograph a model in the studio and edit it to appear like they are holding a 360 world. This is to send the message that we are immersed in technology.
My final shoot will be on location. Inspired by John Stanmeyer and his photo of immigrants that was featured in the british journal of photography, The photo will be a few people standing on a hill at night they will be silhouetted with their backs to the camera. The models will be holding up their phones in the air as if they're trying to find signal, It will be low lit with the light of the phones bright. To get the desired lighting that I want for this shoot I may need to use on location lighting.
I will challenged myself by exploring new technologies of underwater photography, I have used a Go-pro underwater before however it has never been for a professional shoot, this will challenge my technical ability to take focused images whilst underwater. This may prove challenging because Me and my surroundings with be constantly moving and controlling what I want in the frame may be a challenge.
I will also be using a piece of kit which i haven't used before, an underwater flash for the Go-pro.
I will be photographing a reflective, shiny object in the studio to challenge my lighting skills, I will need to make a set up bouncing and cutting off light with card to reduce any reflections of flares. I will also be exploring new editing techniques to create advertisements that looks realistic and professional.
I envisage my final work being displayed as large prints.
