not to be a bitch but like. im kind of sad we missed out on alina’s suffering because of her living sainthood and her subsequent martyrdom when she destroys the shadow fold in the books?? (DISCLAIMER ITS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE IVE READ THEM SO MY MEMORIES ARE FUZZY) but like. i always really enjoyed the parts where she was like. forced into hiding in the cave systems and was stuck under the “protection” and obsession of the apparat who was shoving her around and making her be a protector of pilgrims instead of letting her fight on behalf of the grisha and i enjoyed seeing her struggle with the waning of her powers as she was stuck underground and i enjoyed how her hair went stark white from the stress and duress of using her powers and the amplifiers and how it marked her so visibly and unquestionably as the living saint and i really enjoyed how in the end of the third book she “dies” alongside aleksander and gets to shuffle off the mantle of her sainthood knowing she did her duty and gets to have the life of simple happiness and freedom she WANTED from the beginning, and like the reclamation of her home in the orphanage she was raised in and like. letting the sun summoner saint die alongside the darkling and there was just something really compelling to me about alina losing and sacrificing her powers alongside mal sacrificing his as the firebird yk?? and i know this “ending” as it is rn makes more sense for the ambitions of the show runners bc its more open ended than having their saint die after doing what she was meant to do but also like. idk. im curious to see which parts of the book they continue to weave into the narratives they have planned for the series and which parts are going to be forever on the wayside

A Story of her Own
This is the story of a Sun Summoner that is much much older than the Darkling and is looking for her own haven if one might say. Can Aleksander be that for her? Is it even what she's looking for? Well you'll have to read the story to know ;)
Tumblr media
Art on the moodboard is from Abel Klaer
Back in 2021, after watching Shadow and Bone for the first time, I somehow got inspired and started writing. And the result was this, my very first fanfic, A Story of her Own.
To be honest, there are a lot of cringe parts specially in the beginning and you can tell I'm newbie writer, but I'm still super proud of it. What I'm less proud of is that it's still not finished, but I've been working a lot on it recently so maybe I'm finally going to complete this.
I am taking a looooot of liberties in this, regarding canon, the magic system, the history of the world. But I do think it's at least coherent. Also there's a lot of smut because... I like that.
Chapters: 41/~70
Fandom: Shadow and Bone (TV), The Grisha Trilogy - Leigh Bardugo
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Rape/Non-Con
Relationships: The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova/Alina Starkov, The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova/Zoya Nazyalensky, Mal Oretsev/Alina Starkov, Zoya Nazyalensky/Mal Oretsev
Characters: The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova, Alina Starkov, Mal Oretsev, Baghra (The Grisha Trilogy), Genya Safin, Zoya Nazyalensky, Ivan (The Grisha Trilogy), Fedyor Kaminsky, Nikolai Lantsov, Nina Zenik
Additional Tags: Darklina - Freeform, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Happy Ending, Endgame The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova/Alina Starkov, Romance, Angst, Fluff, Smut, Mutual Pining, Simp The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova, BAMF Alina Starkov, Morally Grey Alina Starkov, Sankta Alina Starkov, Older Alina, Older Woman/Younger Man, Who's scheming really ?, Morally Ambiguous Character, different POV, Minor Character Death, mild graphic depiction of violence, Implied/Referenced Suicide attempts, annoying pet names, Mention of triggering subjects coming in the future, Potentially more graphic depiction of violence coming in the future, Unlucky Zoya, Sun Soldier Malyen, BFF Genya, We hate Baghra, Scheming Nikolai, Apparat is not a bad guy, Several Explicit Sex Scene, Dubious Consent, Light Dom/sub, Oral Sex, Dream Sex, Manipulative sex, Rough Sex, Minor sex scene between The Darkling / Zoya (before Alina), Minor oral sex scene between Malyen / Alina, Personal interpretation of how amplifiers work, Personal interpretation of different grishaverse myths, Mainly based on the show, And the Wiki, English is not my 1st language, English is not my beta’s 1st language either, This thing is a full story (with plenty of smut for fun), Rated non-con because, Dream sex she doesn't know is not really a dream, Kissing while the other is not aware, NO rape
Summary:
Everyone always supposed the Sun Summoner would appear one day, the Darkling first, but somehow, they never imagined that maybe she was already there, among them.
Or how Alina is much older than she looks like and is playing a game of her own.

SHADOW & BONE SEASON 2 THOUGHTS
SPOILERS AHEAD - read at your own risk
Ok, I think I made it clear enough
So, yesterday I finished watching the second season of S&B and I have contrasting thoughts.
Let's start with the good ok?
THE ACTORS. Cannot stress this enough. That is definitely a bunch of very talented people. They had one job and boy if they delivered. I liked everyone but my favourite performances were the ones of Freddy Carter (the Bastard of the Barrel psychotic gaze couldn't have been done better, and also his relationship with Inej... chef's kiss – straight out from the books) Amita Suman (if possible she did an even better job than in the first season, I loved Amita in every scene, from the fight ones to her SCENE with Kaz, and especially what she says to him after that "Hope is dangerous", which I don't think is very much in line with the Inej from the book, but it fits really well in the storyline of the tv series) Daisy Head (THE WOMAN WAS AMAZING, thank god she was given a bigger role in this season! the way she portrayed Genya was brilliant, the hurt, the shame, the fear you could read everything from her face, simply brilliant) Patrick Gibson (my love Nikolai, he also did a very good job and I liked his transitioning from a very swaggering and outgoing performance of Sturmhond, to his portrayal of Nikolai – I've seen some critics in the way he portrayed Nikolai, but in my opinion it couldn't have been better. Sturmhond is not the same as Nikolai otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to create the alter ego; for as much as he has the confident exterior, Nikolai is extremely thoughtful (and I think that you can recognise that by reading KOS/ROW) and Patrick was able to show the thought process that we read in the books, so I liked him). All the others were all extremely good, Ben Barnes off the charts as always, Jessie Mei Li and Archie Renaux did a brilliant job to give us Malina (sometimes definitely too diabetic but alright), the rest of the Crows, Danielle, Kit, Jack and Calahan were AMAZING, they embodied their characters perfectly (Wesper was done beautifully, different than the books, but Kit and Jack are so good that it just came flawless anyway; Helnik was pure angst and I LOVED IT). Also special mentions to Lewis Tan and Anna Leong Brophy because they NAILED the twins performance.
Then we have the plot. Now I wouldn't discard the thing as necessarily bad, because in its own right it wasn't. The issue with book adaptations is that we have such high standards given by the books that we always expect too much. I have to say, some things I liked some things I didn't. Shadow & Bone parts I have to say I'm partial to the second book, especially the whole attack at the Little Palace is just one of my favourites scenes ever and it felt a bit meh. Other issue they have not tackled at all was the religious role Alina had (especially with Tamar and Tolya that in the tv series look more like Nikolai's sidekicks) that instead I wanted to see. A character that basically disappears is the Apparat: I don't like the guy but he was kind of important (how he always schemes around, how he imprisoned Alina, now he's just a guy that gives shady advice to everyone who'd listen). I wish I could have seen more Zoya simply because I love her very much and the fact that she and the Darkling didn't have any type of scenes together is absurd to me. All the scenes where Nikolai was were better in my opinion but I may be a little biased, but I just don't want him to pine over Alina for too long! Not with Zoya right there! But we'll see. Also the whole thing Mal/Alina/Darkling was done in a pretty good way; could have been done better? obviously, but since the objective was not to copy word by word from the books I think it went well. Six of Crows parts I liked how they portrayed Kaz (his childhood story I wanted to cry everytime), very on point BUT I didn't like how rushed it was the vengeance against Pekka Rollins; it was done too quickly for the sake of giving the Crows something to do the first half of the season and it deserved more time for me. I like the new dynamics with the integration of Nina and Wylan, but once again we couldn't really see much of it because there was always someone else and never just the Crows. I've said it before but I'll say it again, Wesper was majestic, Jack must have understood Wylan to a soul level because it was the same as reading Leigh words. I don't particularly mind the fact that Wesper had a thing before rather than not having met at all. Also Jesper embracing its powers was really nice if not a bit rushed. Then, KANEJ SCENES PEOPLE. The talent of Amita and Freddy shone through so brightly it's amazing (the "How will you have me" scene pierced me to the core – not to mention Inej's dream.... ughh so good). KOS foreshadowing They killed David and I was so not okay with that, but then I thought "Did they though?" bc there was no body no anything, so maybe and I say maybe he still alive somewhere (he better be bc he has to marry Genya and be happy and I'll be in denial until it is confirmed). WHEN THE BEE LANDED ON ZOYA SHOULDER the scream that came out of me people thought I was possessed I swear. Nikolai as he finds out he's the nichevo’ya was really well done. What Nina said to Zoya "someone will sweep you off your feet so hard you won't know what hit you" I wanted to cry, I swear if they don't give me Zoyalai next season I'll riot. I didn't particularly enjoy the Genya,Zoya and Alina triumvirate, but I'm feeling it may be short lived. (Also Zoya's "I could fix him" energy is what we want in S3)
Now for what may happen next, I'm really happy about the jurda parem storyline because it affects everyone in different ways. I hope that now that they'll tackle KOS it won't become the Alina show pt 2 but they'll give Zoya the story she deserves. I need Zoya to be the general and right hand of the King and Alina is kind in the middle of that but then I thought that Alina will probably go on her own journey with the fact she has the sword to return to Shu Han and now dark powers and so she may enter her villain era with maybe Mal bringing her again on the right path (also let's not forget that the tree the Darkling goes into is in Shu Han, so I think they'll play around with that a bit), idk honestly all I care at this point is that by the end Alina's hair have to be white. I hope the Crows finally free poor Matthias from Hellgate and finally finally go do the Ice Court heist, that it has been a long time coming.
All in all I honestly liked the season, there was only one main issue that affected everything else: too many characters. In Italian there is a saying "troppa carne al fuoco" which means literally "too much meat on the fire" which translates to the fact that there were too many things to follow to do it properly. Too many stories to follow, too many people on the move with too many things to accomplish, and even with good writing it can easily become a shitty thing. So whatever it is to come (hopefully season 3 and also the rumoured SOC spinoff) I'm glad they are planning to separate the cast.
Ok I'm done.

GOLDENE ZEITALTER-TYP:INNEN!

hi helloo, i'd just written a novel in ur askbox about s&b and then tumblr crashed and it was all lost :') maybe for the better because it was a total mess of thoughts lmao so let me try to summarise my feelings a bit (im sorry this turned out REALLY long)
i HATE that they speedran s&s and r&r in the most bullshit way possible. the entire amplifier hunt was basically removed, at least journey-wise - they just. find the sea whip in that one cave and then they go to morozova's workshop and thats it?? wheres the shu han quest. where the fuck is the ACTUAL spinning wheel. and why is alina not hounding everyone to find the firebird??? she's supposed to be obsessively seeking it now, why does she barely seem to care? also where's the actual ending to siege and storm. WHERE is my darkling & alina fight. wheres her being saved by mal... where's her white hair !!!! idk that scene was my favourite and once i knew we were getting a tv show i really wanted to see this on screen :((
all the characters and relationships they cut... harshaw, misha, ONCAT, tamar&nadia (because lbr they basically weren't there), honestly i even missed sergei and stigg (who i'd barely even remembered before), nadia and adrik as siblings even. they just cut all these people and their journeys with alina for what, a fetch quest for a magic sword?
also, where's the apparat and the soldat sol? we hear people call alina 'sankta', sure, but the entire religious part of ruin and rising is just. completely sidelined. which is really weird because it's so important!! tolya and tamar's faith is basically nonexistent and i don't like it at all
the whole firebird reveal was soooo boring. like i'm sorry but that scene in the book? absolutely perfect. but in the show... it's just a story! baghra just tells mal and thats it! honestly this entire season was so much telling and not showing too, soooo much exposition and it just really didnt work
now then. ive put this off long enough but. the fucking ending. dude... i don't even know where to begin. how do you fuck up the rewrite of your book so badly that the entire moral of your book is just. completely lost?? literally the entire trilogy is built on the "what is infinite? the universe and the greed of men" quote. you CANNOT disregard that in this way. the point of the entire story is that alina's greed is punished! she loses her powers and she loses mal (sort of). the fold is destroyed by her power but not by her, because she never should have had that much power! now... she loses nothing. she has her power, she has three amplifiers, she brought mal back with merzost (which is still. insane to me like i legit laughed out loud when that happened) and now she's general of the second army and also soon probably queen of ravka??? she doesnt lose ANYTHING to her greed.
and with the ending too... where the hell are they going to take this next? because theyre sure as hell not following the kos duology storyline, what with alina now being nikolai's general instead of zoya (which im also. really pissed off about because zoya's story is SO important and theyve just. shoved her to the side)
i also have some thoughts about the crows and how theyve been handled of course i just don't feel as passionately about them (also because they shouldnt have been in this show in the first place but thats just my opinion <3) but i do wonder how theyre gonna start the soc spinoff when theyve basically done so much of the crooked kingdom plot already? and inej is literally already sailing and finding slavers like... i have no idea how theyre going to dothis spinoff and make everyone happy
very small last points but im so mad that they did the "an ordinary life full of ordinary things" line and then decided to. include nikolai? what the actual fuck? and then they didnt even GIVE malina their ordinary life... sorry im so so angry about this ending
i'm sure ive got more to say but this is already wayy too long and i don't wanna bother u anymore but ive just been mad for 3 days straight and really needed to get this off my chest <3 im really disappointed that theyve managed to screw up my favourite book series of all time so i'm just going to reread r&r and forget this season exists :D hope u have a nice day and thank u for reading this dump slfksdj
RIP but ty for venting!!! i totally get everything you’re saying. all of this comes down to the writers smashing basically all of the books into one season for NO reason. all of the things that make the trilogy & duology interesting & compelling & complex are gone bc there’s no time to show them. it’s constantly going GO GO GO with the plot, & for what?? nothing got added to these characters this season, i didn’t feel any impact during any of the big reveals, i didn’t get any emotional payoff from these characters’ journeys.
& why change the ending the way they do? eric’s already said that a season 3 would go back & touch on s&s things they didn’t address. so this ending is meant to draw out alina & mal’s stories, but why do it this way? why backtrack like that? you could certainly draw out the trilogy without speed-running the original ending like this, but that doesn’t fit whatever weird narrative he has for the crows ig.

shadow & bone is just objectively such a bad tv show! pained having to say so 🫡 but it's not even just how they spun up the grishaverse books in a blender and pasted together different exciting-sounding bits, it's like, as storytelling? it's so bad? they don't even name some of the characters until the 4th ep? there is no build to any relationship or plot point. (my poor father is so confused until i give him an extra 45 min rundown of what happened/what should have happened after each episode)
it just... hurts a little that somehow this is how they treat stories at big production companies? it reminds me of watching an adaptation of my favorite book as a girl (ella enchanted) and seeing them completely miss the heart of the tale.
yes, six of crows is by far the more popular duology. and, yes, Leigh Bardugo really grew and flourished as an author as the grishaverse went on. but there is still a touching, and exciting, and heart-wrenching story to experience in the shadow and bone trilogy.
what i truly don't understand is — an author already gave you an entire plot laid out, beats & twists & growth & everything? and you still mess it all around?
i know if i were Leigh, i would feel pained watching them take some of my very beloved characters (the crows) and giving them "backstories" but just cheaply snatching important plots from future books and tossing them into a plot. i always think that leigh bardugo is a queen of plot twists, and they work because she has laid a groundwork! the tension builds to them, there are all these struggles and little hints that we receive, and then, wham, everything falls together. in the show, there is nothing behind them. maybe it seems like a nice little trick, but the weight of these choices isn't there. (for example, the crooked kingdom plotline?? like that "job"/"heist" grabs at you, because of all the strings that are being pulled, all the hurt and anger and persistence that these characters are working through and pursuing... and the show just completely takes away the chance to ever build towards that moment.)
the show doesn't let us sit with experience. it immediately wants us to like characters, to read into future romances (or just to be slapped with romance right off the bat), to think that it's an epic show. but part of the wonder of a good story is trudging along with the characters through every moment of growth and pain and joy. that's what makes those other moments impactful.
i was trying to explain to my dad that the end of the second book (siege and storm, which they seem to have crammed into the 4th episode) should hit you like losing Gandalf in the fellowship of the ring. like we've toiled and climbed towards success and then had to just watch as everything crumbled.
there is nuance, and fun, and dread in the trilogy. ravka and its politics are complicated and interesting. where is the apparat? sankta alina? there are discourses, moral considerations, the dichotomy of an old world struggling with old problems as a new world is breaking through that we could have explored. the spinning wheel? is that? these characters deserved more.
(there are so many smaller things I could pick at. there's something about both genya's and alina's choices being altered (lessened?)... in how genya acquires her scars and how alina is at her engagement party when the darkling's attack happens... it feels like something is taken away from them (like how Ella's agency and powerful choices are taken away from her in the movie Ella Enchanted) ... i have to sit with that thought more. sturmhond/nikolai and his wonderful character and mind and inventions. why they wrote a whole fanfiction for the darkling and his little group in the house, with him coughing blood like we're supposed to worry about him...)
with this story presented in this way, it is evident that the show's creators didn't take the journey of the books, didn't feel the emotions, didn't listen to the heart of the stories. a real story is not about clever fights, saucy winks, and incensed speeches. the real story is the trek, the series of choices, the ways characters must grow. and the way we grow & feel with them.
this started out as a silly little rant after finishing the 4th ep, oops. (& note, i also haven't finished the season yet.) i am just feeling so much and sense that maybe my thoughts are not coming out so clearly here, but sometimes you just gotta spill.
also my dad is most concerned about "the guy in the jail. is he going to get out? have they gotten him out?" (i think Matthias might be his favorite character)

Idk. There's just something about Inej meeting Alina in the show I don't like. Because in the books, Alina doesn't want to be worshiped, and you know she doesn't want to be worshiped - she doesn't even want to be a saint. But by the time Six of Crows comes around, she's divorced herself from that life entirely - there is no pain in people worshiping an already martyred saint. She made the decision that she would give up that life and that name at the cost of never getting to say anything about that life.
But in the TV show, Inej is worshiping a person who she met. A person who does not want to be worshiped. A person who can say as much. Book Inej would have immense respect for Alina if they met, but she would also respect Alina's wishes - which she didn't in the show, even if she had every opportunity.
I'm also generally not a fan of the way Alina's sainthood was pre-ordained in the show rather than being an intentional result of manipulation of her image; that very manipulation of her image and the subsequent loss of autonomy are so important to her character. But the fact that people were waiting for a saint in the show cheapens that a lot; it's like, well yeah, it sucks that Alina is getting this image of sainthood pushed onto her, but it would have happened to anyone. No one is to blame for her being a saint.
But there were so many people to blame in the books! The Apparat, mostly, but also the Darkling and even Nikolai to a degree. That manipulation is so twisted in the books, but in the show, it's just another Situation, and it feels so much more random

Panthers väntade inte på övertid
Tumblr media

GOLDENE ZEITALTER-TYP:INNEN!
🥂☕️🫶🏽🍵🫖💕🧃🍺🖖🏽🍷🥛
