The Sarah Jane Adventures is what the Chibnall era of Doctor Who wishes it was:
Diverse ensemble cast led by strong female lead with plenty of presence, that tackles some bold new aliens while revisiting familiar favourites, firmly grounded in Doctor who’s classic history. Kid friendly, yet enjoyable for adults. Strong pacifist, anti-gun morals, cleverly executed in a way that feels natural for the characters, the tone, and the overall story. Importance placed on family dynamics, with some light exploration of adoption, divorce, and being abandoned by parent(s), (and of course, found family). Balanced story telling that allows all characters to show off their personality and skills during an episode.

I'm three years late but I just saw the "Farewell, Sarah Jane" tribute episode and it made me cry. It was a bittersweet, overdue closure to The Sarah Jane Adventures 💜💛

Interacting with USian Doctor Who fans, and speaking to USian friends of mine, I've noticed something that really amuses me!
The US has no concept of 'Family Show' on the whole.
So this post (& the questions to my friends) was caused by a DW post that called DW 'A Children's Show' which... It isn't.
It's a Family Show.
The easiest way to explain it is with the old spinoffs, the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood.
TSJA was a children's show. It was designed and written in such a way that children could watch it alone, with no supervision and while adults might derive some enjoyment from it (because it was well written!) it was aimed, written and produced with children in mind.
Torchwood was an adult show. It was designed and written in such a way that directly excluded children, from violence to horror to sexual aspects, it was not, in any way, intended to be watched by children.
Doctor Who is the middle ground. It's a Family Show. It's designed for children AND adults to watch together. The horror isn't so scary that children would be traumatised (I'm talking the average child. I don't doubt there are episodes that scare children but none to the point of trauma), but the plots are a little more complex and there's plenty in there that's more adult oriented.
Doctor Who is aired prime time on BBC. It's a family evening show, everyone sit down together and watch the silly space man together and then the kids go to bed and adults watch more grown up stuff.
It's written, produced and aired in such a way to include everyone! The jokes and things aimed at children might not appeal to the adults but the rest of the show does! The plots may sometimes fly over children's heads, but there's adults watching with them that can explain (IN THEORY! yes, I know that's not everyone's experience)
I also think this is where a lot of USian criticism of the show comes from.
Some think DW is a children's show, so are surprised by the deeper sides of things because, well, it's for children!
And some think DW is an adult show, so think the things designed to appeal to a younger audience are bad, are cheesy, are out of place.
Please note that this isn't a criticism of USian fans! I love y'all and your inclusion in the fandom!
This is something I have noticed as a Brit that has amused me and I wanted to explain!

wanted to give myself a little art challenge this year by drawing the same subject everyday to see how i progress & to keep myself motivated and on task, ive focused it to one of my special interests (sarah jane adventures, particularly luke smith)! its been so fun so far, the limitation on subject (ive skirted the edges on this rule by including other characters, but lukes the main focus so ill allow it :P) has allowed me to test different brushes and the scheduling has forced me to ease up on my perfectionism anxiety.
anyway!!! just to avoid any confusion, all of these have the @ bannermanroad on it which is my twitter, where ive been uploading these first (and daily), but ill be uploading these here weekly!! heres the first batch [1/1/24-7/1/24]
day one: the lost boy / day two: goodbye sarah jane smith / day three: secrets of the stars / day four: invasion of the bane / day five: unit!luke (outfit based on rani takes on the world: the revenge of wormwood cover) / day six: scene from time schisms! (rtotw2, looks not in line with cover) / day seven: sanjay (“shes the one who told me that sanjay was looking at me in that way” - farewell sarah jane)

HCs for a TSJA & Torchwood crossover.
There are precious few fics about it which I find to be a bally shame™
It takes place over several months. This is its own series.
Starts with the tw team posing as teachers at Clyde, Rani and Luke's school for whatever reason...
Mr Smith is incredibly gracious and polite to Toshiko and Toshiko only. Compliments her in every conversation. It creates all sorts of ridiculous discourse about the Mr Smith/K9 relationship. But that's fine because K9 loves her too. Tbf I don't think Tosh is autistic, more of a undefined neurodivergent, but the way she would react to Mr Smith. All her dreams come true.
Owen and K9 are slagging everyone (and each other) off. Also at one point they have to pair up and Owen gets a pathetic "Why do I get the dog" moment.
Ianto and K9 needlessly formal hyper intelligent sarcastic side characters 🤝 The one liners that would come out of this. Also they bear shocking resemblance to C3PO from Star wars but also that's a cyberman which is a whole other conversation.
Gwen, Rani and Sarah Jane spend the whole time gossiping about anything and everything. Politics, boys, aliens. Rani has yet another Girlboss Mother. I also feel like Gwen and Gita would bicker.
Owen and Clyde bond as the supposedly-streetsmart-third-wheelers with absent fathers of the group and think everything is ridiculous apparently. Together. But there's definitely some sensitive conversations there too.
Ianto and Luke join forces and cause an autism black hole with the astronomical (physical) density of their combined autism. Ianto makes Luke laugh for the first time that isn't "Clyde has told me this is funny :DDD" and teaches him humour that makes sense in his mind. Ofc they both canonically have photographic memories as well so I bet they do competitions over it.
Sarah Jane absolutely dotes on Ianto and can't get enough of him. "Can we keep him?" (As though she doesn't make the decisions) Just finds him so charming and witty and because he gets on so well with Luke as well as being the youngest of the tw team she mothers him to all hell. He doesn't know how to react just is very polite.
Imo Jack/Ianto and Luke/Clyde is a very similar relationship dynamic and Clyde probably asks Jack for advice or smt.
When the team go to Ealing for whatever it is they need to investigate, Jack either sorts out with Sarah Jane for them to move into no. 10 Bannerman Road, god knows they have enough room, or they sort something else out. If they do the first, them all living together is something to get used to and Ianto constantly hides away from mealtimes and stuff because he needs time alone. It's either "My teachers secretly also know about aliens :0" or "My head teacher lives opposite me and is also my friend's dad, and now half my teachers live in my house."
Owen and Rani are very different so they end up never really talking to one another, but when they do it turns out they get on.
I know there aren't many Jack ones. Maybe I'll add some later. Also I'm going to make another post about the Torchwood team as teachers >:)
I would be absolutely honoured if someone took it upon themselves to write this oml

Funniest scene in tsja was when they ended up back in time and stumbled on a police box, to which obviously Sarah Jane went !!!!!!!! And started knocking on the doors yelling for the Doctor, only for normal police man to open it revealing a normal box and for her to immediately remember that oops they’re in the 50s. Police boxes are a real thing and not just a spaceship disguise. Hilarious.
