T28/T95 105mm prototype super heavy tank/assault gun. Built during WWII to crack the Siegfried Line in Germany, it was later considered as a possible participant in the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland.
The near 100-ton vehicle was initially designated a heavy tank. It was re-designated as the 105 mm Gun Motor Carriage T95 in 1945, and then renamed in 1946 as the Super Heavy Tank T28.
One of the vehicle’s most distinguishing features was the double sets of tracks it used to reduce the enormous ground pressure it generated. To make the T28 remotely transportable, these tracks had to be removable, otherwise it would be too wide to fit onto any flatcar or trailer.

‖ː‖`What, in your opinion, is the peak o' absurdity in tank-design`?‖ː‖
Imo, the peak of absurdity is superheavy tanks. While they can carry much more armour and heavier weapons, they require far more crew, need more powerful engines, and often have abysmal ranges. This means they need to be transported via rail, which then means that the opposing forces have an easy way to prevent these weapons from reaching the frontlines.
They also have excessive ground pressure - the American T28 Super Heavy Tank had to have a second pair of tracks added to support itself. This in turn also meant that they couldn't cross many bridges, since the sheer mass would cause the bridge to collapse, which would block troops from advancing, and most likely also strand the tank.
In addition, the turret traverse rate was also quite low - this can be seen in some Heavy Tank/Tank Destroyer hybrids too, such as the BT-42 and KV-2. The KV-2 in particular was afflicted with a heavy turret, which raised the centre of gravity so high that the turret couldn't be traversed on a slope, as it would cause the tank to tip over.
Furthermore, the shell size was also problematic - the KV-2's shells were split into two parts to make it easier to load the main gun, while the Maus required two loaders.
In addition, the tanks were often long and tall. In the case of the Maus, while going around a corner, the nose of the tank would be visible far before the gun would be able to poke around the corner, and that's not taking into account the low turret traverse rate. While it certainly had tough armour, Allied forces would not have much trouble disabling the massive tracks, and these tracks took numerous hours to repair. That would give allied forces ample time to destroy the vehicle.
In essence, superheavy tanks were the height of stupidity. While they gave the opportunity for larger weapons and armour, the lack of mobility was a massive and unsolvable issue, and with better penetrating rounds developed and more advanced armour becoming available, the focus shifted to all purpose tanks: Main Battle Tanks like the Challenger 2, M1 Abrams and T-90 were able to outperform any superheavy tank, resulting in them becoming fully obsolete.
