NEW FOR JUNE
https://cruelnaturerecordings.bandcamp.com/
1) Clara Engel 'Sanguinaria'
Ten new songs of transfiguration from the Toronto-based artist, accompanied by electric and acoustic guitars, talharpa, gudok, lap steel, melodica, and percussion. A mystical work, mixing classical and dark folk wanderings with misty soundscapes, which creates an abstract, new world atmosphere.
2) BAKER JA LEHTISALO 'Crocodile Tears'
A collaborative album of new wave industrial doom songs by Nadja’s Aidan Baker and Circle / Pharaoh Overlord's Jussi Lehtisalo. A sort of '80s New Wave/AOR aesthetic with a heavy/noisy/shoegaze/industrial sound.
3) TUNNELS OF ĀH 'THE SMEARED CLOTH (2012 - 2018 UNEARTHED)'
TUNNELS OF ĀH is Stephen Āh Burroughs (HEAD OF DAVID / FRAG)
"The Smeared Cloth: 2012 - 2018 Unearthed" is a double-album compilation of tracks from the period before the release of "Lost Corridors" and unreleased recordings from around the time "Surgical Fires" and "Charnel Transmissions" were published. Although compiled from various sessions, the overall sound is exceptionally sonically coherent.
FFO Coil, Psychic TV, Arktau Eos, Z'EV
4) Repo Man 'Me Pop Now'
Repo Man emerged in Bristol in 2011, reshaping 'rock groop' sturm-und-clang into subnormal forms, son-of-Oldham vocal slurries, oozing free sax splatter and shards of punishing guitar bliss. If you ever freaked to The Fall, Sonic Youth, Swans or Ornette Coleman then Repo may be your ticket to oblivion.
5) Charlie Butler 'Parts Unknown'
Charlie Butler is a Lanarkshire based artist who began a series of solo releases in 2021 exploring psychedelic, ambient, heavy and hypnotic sounds.
Parts Unknown" is Butler's first full solo release since moving from Reading to Lanark.
Two lengthy slowcore / post-rock / drone tracks in the vein of Papa M, Jesu, Godspeed, etc.

Peter Lorre Movie Timeline
Peter Lorre was never a “horror” actor.
Horror was Hollywood’s unfortunate typecasting. If anything, he’d say of himself that he played roles of “psychological terror” - which takes intellect and insight. But he was also a gifted comic actor and took his turn as a romantic lead.
Enjoy this marvelously nuanced, talented actor in his films below. If a link doesn’t work or you don’t see one, try searching on YouTube, archive.org, ok.ru, Vimeo, and Dailymotion. All else fails, hopefully you can buy it from Amazon, eBay, or a rare film site.

BEAVER DAM - Robert Irving Johnson, 87, of Beaver Dam, Wis. went to meet his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. Several family members were able to travel there, and he passed in peace surrounded by loved ones singing, reading scripture, and holding his hand.
The youngest of three siblings, Bob was born on June 13, 1934, in St. Paul, Minn. The family was part of a large Baptist church there. Bob placed his faith in Jesus Christ at age seven to save him. At the age of twelve, his father passed away and his family moved to St. Croix Falls, Wis. After graduating from high school there, he took a year of medical training while working at a blood bank in St. Paul. However, his growing burden for the lost led to his calling to be a pastor. He went to Bob Jones University, where he met his wife, Joan Huber, and they were married on July 28, 1956. He then continued his education in ministerial studies at Northwestern Baptist Bible College, followed by three years at Central Seminary, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree, and became a pastor.
Bob pastored in Wisconsin for 44 years, at churches in Hillsdale, Hartford, Plymouth, and New Holstein. Finally, he pastored in Beaver Dam for 23 years before retiring. His ministry focused on building up struggling churches, both spiritually and physically. As a result, he oversaw the construction of two beautiful church buildings in Plymouth and Beaver Dam. He was also instrumental in founding Baptists for Life of Wisconsin, an organization that establishes crisis pregnancy centers throughout the state. After retiring, he remained active in church ministry, leading Bible studies and preaching in churches as needed.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan Johnson; and sister, Sue (Alvin) Matson; his son, Bill Johnson; and four daughters, Linda (Gary) Sugden, Diane (Alan) Capps, Cheri (Jeremy) Spaulding, Julie (Heath) Unruh; and daughter-in-law, Ronda (Steve) Johnson; grandchildren, Leah (Stephen) Franklin, Christin (Matt) Ohman, Joe Johnson, Mitch (Hannah) Johnson, Heather (Eric) Pulkowski, Justin (Sarah) Sugden, Brad (Haley) Capps, Austin Sugden, Kaylie Spaulding, Sarah Unruh, Robby (Holly) Capps, Kendra Spaulding, Kelly Unruh, Alida Sugden, Jayse Capps, Jack Spaulding, Luke Unruh, and Holly Unruh; great-grandchildren, Andrew Ohman, Natalie Franklin, Olivia Ohman, Meredith Franklin, Sophia Franklin, Alex Ohman, Ethan Franklin, Charles Pulkowski, Madelyn Ohman, Violet Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Evelyn Franklin, Riley Johnson, Owen Franklin, Delaney Franklin, Lucy Sugden, David Capps, and Landon Johnson. He is further survived by nieces, nephews and relatives.
Bob is preceded in death, reunited in glory with parents Harold and Gertrude; and step-father, Roy Sturm; his brother, Dick Johnson; his son, Steve Johnson; and grandsons, Nick Johnson, and Davin Unruh.
A visitation for Pastor Johnson will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at HARMONY BAPTIST CHURCH in Beaver Dam, Wis. A service celebrating his life will commence at 1 p.m. in the same building. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam, ending in a light dinner at Bible Baptist Church, across the street from the cemetery. A Livestream of the funeral will be available to view on the Harmony Baptist Church Beaver Dam's Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the following charities: The Access Women's Center of Madison - A Pro-Life Organization The Damascus Road Project - An Anti-Human Trafficking Organization.
Bob led with a servant's heart and influenced the lives of many. He was a genuine and caring pastor, loving husband, father, and grandfather, a hard-working, honest and humble man. He will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
The Koepsell-Murray Home in Beaver Dam is serving the family. Online condolence may be made at www.koepsellfh.com.

SBT GRVL Recap
The inaugural SBT GRVL event drew plenty of interest when it was announced last fall, selling out within just six days of registration opening. It got still more attention by subsequently offering $28,000 in equal prize money for men and women and by managing to draw an impressive 30% female participation. On August 18, 2019, we were there in Steamboat Springs, Colorado to see firsthand exactly what all the hype was about.
Courses
Promoted by Mark Satkiewicz, Amy Charity and Ken Benesh, SBT GRVL offered three distances to riders. The “Black” course comprised 141 miles of mixed terrain which included sections of pavement and about 70% gravel roads. The “Blue” and “Green” courses were 99 miles and 37 miles, respectively, with similar pavement-to-gravel ratios. The rolling landscape, cattle ranches and hard-packed gravel roads, or “groads,” served up fast and competitive races while also providing a scenic tour of what makes Steamboat Springs and the surrounding area so attractive.
#SBTPARITY
When Mark, Amy and Ken realized that SBT GRVL had sold out within just six days, their excitement was undermined when they saw the numbers of women versus men who had registered. Similar to other large, single-day events, there were far fewer women signed up. In an effort to boost women’s participation, #SBTPARITY was born, and a plan was devised to encourage more female participation by promoting interviews with already registered ladies and extending registration exclusively for 200 additional spots for women only. Their plan worked. Boasting an impressive 400 total registered women, SBT GRVL achieved a 30% female participation rate, a percentage they hope to increase in the upcoming years to 50%.
Results
To no one’s surprise, with such a large payout equally split between men and women, each field composed of some heavy hitters which included current and former World Tour road racers, national champions and the other legends in the gravel racing scene. In the women’s pro field, Brodie Chapman (Team Tibco-SVB) put in an impressive ride to be crowned the first female champion followed by teammate Lauren Stephens, Sarah Sturm, Alison Powers and Nina Laughlin. In the pro men’s field, the King of Gravel, Ted King, took home the victory followed by Payson McElveen, Jacob Rathe, Colin Strickland and Jonathan Baker.
Contest Winner
BikeFlights.com co-promoted a contest earlier this year to award the lucky winner a free entry and round-trip shipping to SBT GRVL. Our recipient, Julie, traveled from Kalispell, Montana with her family and competed in the “Green” course event. As a first-time gravel event racer, Julie crushed it and then expressed her interest in attending other similar events in the future!
BikeFlights.com Staff
Two of our very own BikeFlights.com staff members took part in this year’s event and came away happy with meeting their goals, enjoying the community and experiencing Steamboat Springs. Customer Support Team Manager Cynthia Frazier and her teammates on The Meteor Intelligentsia squad tackled the “Black” course. Rocky Mountain Marketing Manager Michael Potter took part in the “Blue” course. Each boasted impressive finishes and enjoyed a scenic tour of the region, while also competing.
“I had an amazing time riding with my teammate Rachel. We stopped at every aid station and enjoyed the views!” said Cynthia. “We laughed and suffered with smiles on our faces!”
We’re all looking forward to attending again next year. Mark your calendars for August 16, 2020, and come join us!

Wake the devil
HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL JUNE - OCTOBER 1996 BY MIKE MIGNOLA, JAMES SINCLAIR AND DAVE STEWART
SYNOPSIS (FROM HELLBOY WIKIA)
Part One The comic opens on the northern coast of Norway, inside the Arctic Circle, where a Zinco helicopter is landing in front of the castle that was seen as the end of Seed of Destruction. The head of the company, Roderick Zinco, breaks into the castle and is confronted by Karl Kroenen, Ilsa Haupstein and Leopold Kurtz but Zinco explains that he saw Grigori Rasputin, and promises them use everything he has.
One year later, in SoHo, New York City the Nazis kill the curator of a wax museum, Howard Steinman, otherwise known as Hans Ubler. At the B.P.R.D. Headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut, Tom Manning and Kate Corrigan brief the agents about the life of Vladimir Giurescu and the fact that he could never die because when the full moon shines down on him at Castle Giurescu he heals himself. In 1944, Heinrich Himmler proposed project Vampir Sturm and a Nazi delegation, led by Ilsa Haupstein was sent to recruit Giurescu. After meeting with Giurescu, Hitler ordered the arrest, execution and destruction of the Giurescu family. However, it is possible that reveal the museum curator, could have smuggled Giurescu's body out of Germany before his corpse was burnt. The B.P.R.D. is concerned that someone might try to re-animate Giurescu in his Castle. However, there are three possibilities as to where Castle Giurescu is, so Tom Manning splits the agents into three groups; Hellboy on his own, Abe Sapien with Mr. Clark, and Liz Sherman with Bud Waller and Sidney Leach.
In Romania, Ilsa Haupstein opens the stolen box with Giurescu's corpse and orders the soldiers to take it to a specific room. Meanwile, in Norway, Kurtz and Kroenen watch Ilsa and it is revealed that they are manufacturing their own army. Back in Romania, The agents are all on a plane where Abe Sapien talks to Hellboy about the involvement of Project Ragna Rok because he thinks it's worrying Hellboy. Hellboy jumps out of the plane and his jetpack explodes, crashing Hellboy into Castle Giurescu.
Part Two Ilsa orders Unmensch, a cyborg Nazi, to kill Hellboy and they fight until they both fall through the floor. A flashback to Tarmagant Island, 1944 shows Rasputin ordering Ilsa, Kroenen and Kurtz to go to Norway. In the present, Rasputin appears and tells her to leave the castle and that the next time she sees Giurescu that he will be young again. In the castle, Hellboy wakes up with the Nazi gone, leaving behind only his metal arm.
In a near-by village, an old man tells his daughter to leave with her children and to never come back and that it is "too late" for him to leave.
Hellboy follows a trace of blood and finds a man eating the Nazi's leg, who reveals that he is Vladimir Giurescu's father, and that it is the goddess Hecate who brings Giurescu back to life. When Hellboy asks where Giurescu is, the man refuses to tell him and Hellboy burns him to death. When Hellboy leaves the room he remembers the old man said something about a moon door and sees a door with a moon shape on it, and inside is the box with the corpse and the three soldier's heads in front. But he is surrounded by ravens who turn into the Women of Thessaly and start attacking him.
Part Three At Castle Giurescu, Hellboy shoots the Women of Thessaly until Giurescu comes out of his box. When Hellboy tries to kill him, Giurescu turns into a raven and Hellboy stabs him. Giurescu falls into a stone coffin and ends up underground. When Hellboy gets there Giurescu is on the floor with the knife in his chest but then he turns into snakes and gets away. After Hellboy leaves the tomb, Hecate brings Giurescu back to life. Rasputin tells Isla about his life and offers Ilsa Haupstein to be reborn, like he was.
In the ruins of Czege Castle, Romania, Liz Sherman, Bud Waller and Sidney Leach find a door which leads to a huge room with a lifeless homunculus inside. Liz touches a hole in his chest but she can't let go and the homunculus comes to life as Liz is transferring her energy into him. Bud shoots her arm to get her free. The homunculus panics, snaps Bud Wallers neck and escapes.
In Norway, Roderick Zinco brings Kroenen the head of Professor Herman von Klempt, so that Kroenen can include von Klempt in their plans. In Romania, at The Monastery of St. Bartholomew, Stephen, the old man from part 2 tells his brother, a priest, that the town will go back to its "old ways" because he can sense Giurescu but his brother doesn't believe him. Back at Castle Giurescu, Hellboy finds a room full of explosives and sets a timer for them to go off in one hour.
Part Four As Hellboy leaves the castle, he is confronted by Hecate in snake form, who tries to get Hellboy to go back to his "old kind" and tells him that he lost himself in humanity. Hellboy and Hecate start fighting as she tells him that he will bring the end of the world and that he cannot escape his own destiny. Hellboy spears her and they both smash through the wall and her skin and flesh burn in the daylight just as the explosives go off and the Castle blows up with Hellboy just outside.
Abe Sapien and Clark report back to B.P.R.D. HQ, from the ruins of Szentes Castle. They found nothing but see a pillar of smoke from Hellboy's location, and are told to go and find Hellboy.
In Romania, the Baba Yaga's servant, Koku, brings Rasputin an Iron Maiden to initiate Ilsa Hapustein's rebirth, she goes into it and is immediately killed. Rasputin tells Koku that he will be back to see Baba Yaga.
Stephen and two other men find Hellboy's body outside the ruins of Castle Giurescu to drive him to the crossroads.
In Norway, von Klempt tempts Kroenen to join him instead of going along with Rasputin's plans but Kurtz gets angry and tries to kill Von Klempt. Kroenen tries to stop Kurtz and ends up stabbing and killing him.
In Romania, Hellboy is chained to a thick wooden pole. Rasputin tells him that he is there to rot.
Part Five Abe Sapien and Clark land in the Romanian village where everyone's house is boarded up, with crosses painted on the doors and windows. They enter the church and see Stephen's brother standing with Hellboy's signal belt in hand. He is unresponsive and when Cark touches his shoulder, the priest's head falls off and the pair fall through the floor. Clark is impaled on a spike, but Abe survives the fall. Rasputin confronts Abe, and threatens that just as Abe once speared him (in Seed of Destruction) so too would he one day spear Abe. The Priest's decapitated head says "Abraham Sapien. Do you hear... sunken bells are tolling for thee. Out of caverns of Num-Yabisc, dark and terrible deep, the ocean is calling her children home."
At the crossroads, Hellboy is still chained to a thick wooden pole and is confronted by a fully re-animated Vladimir Giurescu on horseback. Hellboy cracks the pole and hits the horse with it, the horse and Giurescu instantly turn into bones. The Iron Maiden turns into snake-like like Hecate and tells Hellboy that he cannot escape his destiny. She swollows him, his horns fully re-grow and he sees the Ogdru-Jahad before he refuses to help end the world and snaps off his horns. He appears back at the crossroads where Kate Corrigan finds him.
In Norway, Rasputin confronts von Klempt, Kroenen and Zinco and temporarily blinds Zinco who accidentally presses a button that blows up the whole castle. In a helicopter above Romania, Hellboy is told that there was no sign of the iron maiden. At the end of the issue, it is revealed that the skeleton of Vladimir Giurescu was in the process of being moved to [B.P.R.D.] HQ, but while it was temporarily placed in storage at the Bucharest airport it disappeared and has never been recovered. It is also revealed that the head of Father Nicholas Budenz never spoke again but continued to be the focus of poltergeist activities, including sudden temperature drops and the levitation of objects, for weeks.
Epilogue At the World Tree, Yggdrasil, the Baba Yaga tells Rasputin that he cannot be a god and that he has failed. She asks Rasputin to stay with her but he decides to go on trying to make himself a god.
REVIEW
This story is the natural continuation of Seed of Destruction. Seems like we never saw Hellboy cut his horns until this moment (kind of spoiled by years of Hellboy in the movies).
The horror element is the strongest one in this story, but you have to appreciate how grounded Hellboy sounds. His dialogues make a lot of sense wherever he is, no matter the circumstance. He is not prone to melodramatic expositions.
Mignola is playing a very long game about Hellboy’s purpose and origins. I think it works for Hellboy because it’s his creation and being an indie product, has its own following that will read everything to stay updated. It’s not that you cannot enjoy this story by itself, but there are too many references and characters from previous stories that are not properly re-introduced.
I give this story a score of 8

The Clumsy Square and the Lady Fair [BNHA] preview
Summary: Iida Tenya is presently the top student of UA Boys Academy, square in shape and personality, working hard for a comfortable square-shaped future following in the footsteps of his brother Sergeant Iida Tensei of the National Police Academy. However, he finds himself deviating from his square-shaped path when he helps a girl from Shiketsu Girls High School from being harassed by a group of perverts! As fate, circumstance, and questionable life choices bring him and Yaoyorozu Momo-kun closer, Iida-kun finds himself needing more and more courage to let things fall unpredictably--and naturally--into place.
Relationship: Iida Tenya/Yaoyorozu Momo; lots of other background relationships to be determined!
Rating: T for language!
Notes/Warnings: So some time ago, I received a suggestion to write a real honest to goodness IDMM fic rather than the sad one I published for YES. For some reason, this is the first thing I thought of!
This is a quirkless AU inspired mainly by Densha Otoko/Train Man. Characters from both the canon story and the spin-off (BNHA: Vigilantes) are set to appear here to support our fav square. Apart from Bakugou’s Potty Mouth (tm) when he appears in the story, I have no real warning other than ‘dorks in love’ (and maybe a little awkwardness in narration since I’m trying out a new style). By my planning this is 11 chapters long, but the chapters are... long lololol so it will take a while before I publish the whole story for real. Just feeling a little impatient so I’m publishing the beginning of the story here!
Our story, simply put, is a love story between two high schoolers who meet, become friends, go through the tumultuous confusion of puberty, and eventually fall in-love. Like most stories worth telling, the events that lead to the lovely outcome isn’t as smooth and easy as it sounds. This comes much to the chagrin of our main character, who likes angular, standard glasses, straight, measured lines, and as such spent his childhood running into walls and breaking his glasses because he doesn’t know how to change directions. But as he is about to learn, the best things in life occur off the beaten path.
Let’s begin with our main character. His name is Iida Tenya, 15 years old and, as his friends and family are prone to tell you before the events of this story, he is single for the same number of years as his age.
There are other important things you have to know about our dear Iida-kun. First, he is a first year high school student at the prestigious all-boys’ school, UA. It is a school of great renown, with various opportunities for sports and science engineering scholarships. Were it a different universe, we’re sure that superheroes would choose this school to fast-track their careers into the world of pros!
Impressively, our main character got into this prestigious school with no problems. In fact, he is the number one student in his class, the track team’s star, and also the class representative. In any other school you’d think that he’d be popular and having the unique problem of getting love letters in his school locker everyday, or receiving a table full of chocolates ever Valentine’s day.
Unfortunately, as mentioned before… this is an all-boys’ school. And even though Iida Tenya-kun is classified as one of the ikemen group in 1A because of his looks, he is surprisingly, severely… unpopular. His fellow students like him enough as Class President, but also tell him outright that he’s too stiff or he’s too stern or he talks like an old man or he’s got a weird way of being fired up and why do his arms do that thing?
(You know, the thing when he chops his hand down like a director’s clapperboard? Or the thing that goes down in the parking lot right before you pay your parking fee? That one.)
Bakugou Katsuki-kun, the top 2 student in their class, as well the top 1 in distemper and volatility, eloquently regarded him as such: a Square. A Square in shape, a Square in personality, and a Square in everything he does. Being Bakugou, he says it with more unreasonable expletives than warranted. Iida-kun doesn’t like it very much, but he has to admit, the square shoe fits too well.
It’s distinctive enough that Iida Tenya-kun isn’t regarded by his many classmates as a romantic prospect or a future rival, which is fine by him, because romance with a boy or a girl is the farthest thing from his mind. But he also isn’t taken seriously a lot of the time, which he minded a lot. He likes his classmates well enough, but nary a day passes that he isn’t laughed at for his different way of doing things.
At the end of the day though, despite all the challenges that accompany a square existence, Iida Tenya-kun is happy the way he is. After all, even though he is single, he has acquaintances and those he even dared to call close friends. Namely, Midoriya Izuku-kun, the top 3 student of their class, and Todoroki Shouto-kun, the top 4 student of his class, who both like him well enough. On odd days that he feels the pang of loneliness, he reminds himself that he has too many responsibilities like class rep work and academics and the track team and living up to his brother’s name to really worry about being 15 years old and single for the same number of years.
He’s… happy the way he is. Perfectly happy as a Square, fitting in the square-shaped future he plotted out for him on a clean, precise sheet of graphing paper. There’s no reason for him to change his shape.
So, back to the story. Our Square Friend is in a rush trying to reach the dorms before curfew at 2100 hours. He’s had a long day of working on class representative matters, training with the Track Team, and cleaning out the 1A classroom for a second time (which he tends to do when Kaminari-kun and Monoma-kun are assigned that day’s cleaning duties). After that, he’s had to rush to the Hosu City Mall, where they are selling the limited edition Ingenium Recipro Boost running shoes. It is extremely necessary because it is the only running shoes appropriate for track. When it comes to running shoes, you shouldn’t settle for anything but the best!
Before he realizes it, it is already 2032 hours and his dormmate Midoriya-kun is already asking where he is. He makes a run for the train and barely makes the 2045 train headed for the UA Campus.
At this time of the evening, there aren’t many fellow students on the train, and the carriages aren’t that full. All the seats are taken, mainly by tired salarymen, housewives who did their shopping, and a few elderlies who are seated with their eyes on the floor.
Oh, but somebody else catches his eye. As he remembers the story later on in his life, this must be the moment when his life changed.
The girl is a fellow student, just like him. The first thing he notices about her is her aura, an elegance he cannot quite explain by her appearance alone. Her eyes were dark like ebony, but bright with intelligence as they scanned through an English copy of Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time.[3] Her hair is similarly dark and shiny, neatly tied behind her head in a ponytail that fell in a curious, spiky spiral that only makes her look more distinctive. Her posture is impeccable--he was sure that her upbringing was similarly refined, just by looking at the way she sat. She is wearing a blazer and a dark skirt that Iida-kun identifies as the Shiketsu Girls’ High School uniform.
And… she looks up at him briefly with a curious look in her eyes.
Oh dear. He might have been staring a tad too long. He instantly averts his eyes and focuses on the floor, trying not to blush. Ah, but his ears are getting warmer and his palms are getting sweaty and any minute now his glasses might fog. How embarrassing.
For the first time in his life, Iida-kun thinks of this sentence, in reference not to a Italian Renaissance fresco (such as the likes of Raphael’s The School of Athens), but to an actual human person:
How… breathtaking!
And almost immediately he fights the urge to karate-chop himself in shame. Iida-kun, do not pick up Kaminari-kun’s unseemly habit of ogling at females!
His stop is five stations away. This breathtaking girl is likely going to get off at a different station, and he’ll probably never get to see her again. It’s a little sad, he admits, but it’s not like he has the means or the will to introduce himself to her under these circumstances… he just has to get a hold of himself and stop staring already.
But the universe isn’t done with Iida-kun just yet. Looking back, this must be the second moment when his life changed.
“Heya, heya, hey-yaaaa! Three Sturm Und Drang Brothers comin’ yer wayyy-ya!”
Three shady-looking individuals clad in tight, dark outfits and identical black beanies enter the carriage, swaggering left and right. A strong stench, which is probably a mixture of alcohol and cigarette smoke, wafts from their general direction.
Including Iida-kun, everybody else on the carriage clamps their nostrils shut with their hands and give in to the impulse to face the floor and avoid all eye contact.
“Where the pretty ladies at, yo--? Come out, come out, and have a good time with us!”
What fiends! What a blatant disrespect for women! How despicable! Iida-kun rants silently. He hears his pulse throbbing angrily in his head, and feels his teeth clench. Somebody needs to do something about this!
But for all the angry thoughts in Iida-kun’s head, he keeps his head down.
“Whaa? Bro, looks like we got the wrong carriage, huuuh?” Iida-kun hears one obnoxious voice say, followed by an ominous chuckle. “What is this, the elderly car? There’re only haggard housewives and grannies and ugly old salarymen here, wuuut?”
He peeks a little to observe their rampage. He sees them appraise all the women in the car one by one, leering at them in the face with a sickening grin. The salarymen, all able-bodied men who are seated near the perverts, are obviously aware of what’s happening, but keep their eyes down.
What are these adults doing? Isn’t anybody going to do anything about this?! He feels his fist tighten a little more, but again, he keeps his head down. Iida Tenya! Maybe you should do something about this! If nobody will do the right thing, doesn’t the duty befall on YOU?
“Man, and I thought we’d have another panty run tonight. This blows! Looks like we’re at the boring part of town…”
What would your older brother, Sergeant Iida Tensei of the National Police Agency, do in this situation?! Don’t let him down! Be brave! Be Brave!
“Oh ho ho! Bros! I found a beaut right here!”
He suddenly hears a high-pitched squeak, followed by the sound of somebody being pulled up to their feet. Iida-kun’s head snaps upward, all apprehensions instantly dissipating.
“Oh lordy! We hit the jackpot here!”
To his horror, the perverts now had the Shiketsu High girl in their grubby grasps. The tallest of the trio held her by the arm, causing her to drop Professor Hawking’s book to the floor. The other two leer at her, pushing their faces very, very close to her personal bubble.
“Hey, cutie? What’s your name? Come on, don’t be a snob. Smile for me, won’t ya?”
Someone… someone has to help… somebody? Anybody? A quiet rage, one that our main character has not felt before ever in his fifteen long years of life, begins to build up in his chest.
“Help me, please!” The girl manages to cry, to which the pervert trio around her only whoops in false offense.
Suddenly, he loses all impulse to keep his head down any further. “You FIENDS! You perverts! Sexual harassers! Let her go this instant!”
Before he even realizes that it is his voice booming out all over the carriage, and it is his loud footsteps thundering towards the scene, he is already there, facing off against the surprised perpetrators and the terrified girl.
“Oh~ is that so, aniki?” The tallest one isn’t even fazed, even when Iida-kun attempts to puff out his chest and appear as the most intimidating square as he could be. He turns to the girl, who whimpers as his unpleasant mug is again near her face. “Oh, I know what you want! You want onee-chan here for yourself, huh? Too bad, we got dibs on her!”
Within the next instant, the other two perverts flank him on the side. Caught by surprise, the usually sturdy Iida is suddenly falling to the ground. He flinches and groans as two of the Sturm Und Drang brothers make quick work of him, stomping him and kicking him until his body started screaming in pain. He hears the muffled gasps and cries of all the other passengers, but not a single one of them stands up, or even dares to look.
He shields his face with his arms when the perverts attack his ‘nerd-glasses’ next. Even then, he sees the despairing look in the Shiketsu girl’s face, as the pervert’s tongue goes nearer and nearer her skin…
“Freeze!”
In the next instant, Iida realizes that the stomping and kicking has stopped, and instead three frenzied yells from above him ring out. Within the next ten seconds, he hears a series of precise fists hitting gasping flesh, clicking noises, and the huff of a job well done.
Stunned, he sees an arm reach out to him. He takes it and sees a handsome face smiling down on him. “It’s all right now, buddy,” he says, as he pulls him up to a standing position.
The Shiketsu girl is still shaking, but she is now standing behind the man and at a safe distance from the perverts, who are now handcuffed together on the floor. They seem to have the breaths knocked out of them and didn’t have the energy to look at the mysterious helpful stranger with consternation.
The passengers seem to awaken from their stupor and have exploded in thunderous applause, all thanks of course to the stranger. Not knowing what else to do, the beat-up high school boy bows his head to him. “Thank you,” Iida supplies weakly.
“No, thank you,” the stranger says, reaching out to shake his hand. “If you didn’t yell at the harassers back then, I wouldn’t have known there was trouble from the other car.”
He then looks at the girl, who is still stunned and shaking in silence. He puts a comforting hand on her shoulder and nods. “How about you, miss? Are you all right?”
The glazed look in her eyes dissipates briefly. “O-Oh! Y-yes, I am n-now.” As if just snapping back to her senses, she bows low in front of the stranger and says, “Thank you v-very much for s-saving me from them! Y-you’re my hero!”
Somehow, the way she says hero rings in Iida’s head and lingers there, an unexplained emotion creeping into his heart.
The stranger laughs it off and shakes his hands in front of him. “Oh, no, it’s my job. See, I’m a police officer. Well, an off-duty one, but a police officer just the same.” He reaches into his pocket and shows them his ID and badge. “I’m Inspector Tsukauchi Naomasa.”
Iida’s jaw drops. A police officer! Just like his beloved older brother, Sergeant Iida Tensei of the National Police Agency! No wait, he’s even more specialized than that, he’s an Inspector! A higher ranking! His glasses shine in respect. Police officers are just too cool!
Not like him, who was definitely uncool just a while ago. He feels his glasses fog in shame.
“And I’ll have to ask you two to hop off with me on the next station,” he continues as he walks closer to the apprehended perverts. When he regards the look of horror on the high school students’ faces, he laughs. “No, I’m not going to arrest you two. But I do need your statements, and I need to make sure you two are safe. All right?”
The two high school students nod in relief.
