I just finished binge listening to the 2nd and 3rd audio books. I love the characters but I’m also exhausted and annoyed. His Dark Materials doesn’t get to the “dethroning god” part until midway through The Amber Spyglass which would probably be S3 episode 6 of 12 with the final four being romance/reintegrating socety superpowered no more knowing there’s been massive cosmic change but not able to tell anyone. // The funny part is I almost gave up when realising it was going to tackle abramic religion not be fantasy because i’m really over the “god as a flawed human-like being” storytelling device, it’s kind of a dead horse even though HDM was technically released before the flood of media on the topic. It turned out to be a little more complex than that thankfully. // The story’s compelling but it just wasn’t working for me to have the plot move slowly one week at a time even though they’re clearly delighting in bringing every detail to life. It’s kinda like LOTR put in 3 films, the first two are alliance and character building and the final film (or s3 in this case) will be it all coming together and resolution. You can only take so much of Frodo and Sam struggling through the wastelands while the others convince the rest of the world to fight, if you had to space that out over weeks/months? Nah-uh. Nope. I’m out. Ciao!
All I’ve heard about My Hero Academia is that at least it hasn’t done “what if superheroes but grimdark?” but “heroism is in choosing to be good”. It’s not my style at all, stuff like one peice and dbz are just migraine inducing over the top-ness for me.
But yeah, the way things are sold (or told by people who’ve completed the story) are very different from what you actually get for quite a few franchises, I’ve found more fun in one season - one shot - what you see is what you get stuff than plodding through stuff for a payoff. Folks say it’s about the journey and that’s all very nice but it’s up to each and everyone’s personal tolerance and preferences if you want to absorb or re-enter an entire new universe. As it stands Ive got 2 seasons of discovery, picard, the expanse, american gods s2, dr who, the end seasons of the good place and killjoys all waiting because my brain can’t even. At this point i’m watching video essays of media critique of stuff i’ve already seen and considering finding something low stakes and familiar like Stargate Atlantis.
Would I recommend watching Monster the anime to someone in 2012? Absolutely. Would I recommend it in 2020?
Does anyone ever go into a piece of media with a vague idea of what it is about and then get disappointed when that vague idea turns out to be incorrect?
For example, I once heard (in a podcast, probably) that the His Dark Materials books were about a quest to kill God and while that could still happen, at least this far into the television series (Season 2, Episode 2), I have seen little evidence of that being the point.
I used to have more examples, but that is the only one I can think of at the moment. If I think of more, I will add them.
