7 Tips For Park Hopping At Walt Disney World
Tumblr media
To Park Hop or not to Park Hop? That is the question. No, that isn’t an old Walt Disney quote that Shakespeare stole, paraphrased, and made a bit more famous.  However, it still is a conundrum for many when planning their Disney trip. With a base ticket, you may enter and reenter the same park all day long, as many times as you’d like. Park hopping is about starting at one park and then going to another, or multiple parks, later in the day. There is an expense to adding the Park Hopper option so it shouldn’t be decided without a little consideration. There can be some pretty sweet advantages and adventures to be had by adding the option. Here we have 7 tips, or considerations, for making the most of the add-on and Park Hopping at Walt Disney World:
7. Make It Worth The Cost!
If you’re going to spend the money, we want to make sure you get value out of it.  This should become part of your planning both dining and FastPass+. Or maybe you’d like to take the challenge of hitting all 4 major parks in a single day.  Only once have I done that and it was an amazing experience. I made it a whirlwind day with my son and it is an unforgettable experience that now, 4 years later, he still loves to talk about.  You don’t necessarily have to define it in your plan, although that is ok too. We like to set a plan for the morning and then see where the day takes us. The flexibility to enjoy the evening wherever we like is a very nice perk.
6. Know The Best Routes
There is a cost to the Park Hopping, beyond the price, and that is time.  You’ll want to take a few moments and familiarize yourself with the best travel options.  To the uninitiated, Disney Transportation can be a little confusing at times. For example, if you’re at Hollywood Studios or Epcot you have the option of walking, taking a boat, or the new Skyliner from the International Gateway.  The Magic Kingdom to Epcot means that monorail with a switch at the TTC and possibly the ferry too. Or perhaps you’d like to go to Animal Kingdom from Epcot… it might be faster to walk to Beach Club if you’re near the International Gateway and bus to Animal Kingdom from there rather than walk to the bus terminal in front of Epcot and wait on a park-to-park bus (which depending on the time of year may not be running).  All I’m saying is that there are options. It’s best to have some ideas, rather than just jumping into it. We’re always here to help with any suggestions too.
Tumblr media
5. Hop For Something Special
It may be that the fireworks at Epcot are your favorite, but you want to spend the day at another park.  Park Hopper means that you don’t have to spend your day at the park to enjoy the nighttime show! You can even step that up a notch further and plan to enjoy one of the dessert parties.  Spend your day at Epcot, then take a beautiful boat ride to Hollywood Studios for the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular dessert party. Again, so many fun options are almost limitless.
Tumblr media
4. Planning Your Disney FastPasses
Park hopping can make this a little more difficult than if you’re staying at one park.  But, that’s what we’re here for! 😊 It may seem as though you’d be at a disadvantage since your first 3 advanced selections have to be at the same park.  However, there are ways to still maximize that system. Perhaps we front-load them, get 3 really early passes and then your afternoon/evening you go wherever else you can find some.  Or flip that. Plan on rope dropping a park to hit the popular ride(s) knowing you have FastPasses for a few other must-do attractions somewhere else that evening. Flexibility is key and that is just what the Park Hopper option gives you!
Tumblr media
3. Plan Your Disney Dining
With the Park Hopper options, just like with the fireworks, you’re no longer tied to a park because of where you want to eat.  Personally, I love eating at all of the different countries around Epcot’s World showcase. That certainly doesn’t mean that I want to spend every day at that park.  This way I get to enjoy Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Hollywood Tower of Terror during the day and still get by bratwurst, spaetzle, and oom-pah band on at the German Biergarten in the evening.  Or, if you are having trouble getting a tough reservation like Be Our Guest or Cinderella’s Royal Table on your designated Magic Kingdom day you have some flexibility to make it on another day because you can travel between parks. Check out our dining guide for more details in this area.
Tumblr media
2. A Convenient Location
Park Hopping becomes much easier when your resort is near a park.  Fortunately, with the addition of the Skyliner, even more, resorts are connected to a park now.  When guests are staying in the Magic Kingdom or Epcot area, I’m more likely to suggest adding the Park Hopper option.  With proximity to the parks from these resorts is easy to want to spend an evening at a park rather than your room. Say you were at Animal Kingdom for the day and you’re staying at Beach Club.  Might as well peruse the My Disney Experience app during your bus ride and see if you can’t snag a late Soarin or Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster FastPass that evening. Go enjoy a late attraction and some fireworks before calling it a night. It's totally up to you!
Tumblr media
1. Don't Forget To Take A Break!
There is a temptation to go all out on your Disney vacation.  This is typically a quick and surefire way to wear yourself out and your family. Not that it can’t be done, but it is certainly a more advanced/veteran way of ‘doing Disney’.  We’ve found that adding hopping makes it easier to go back to the resort and take a nice afternoon break.  You can start the day early, take a break, and finish late without everyone immediately becoming exhausted.  There are early magic hours and late magic hours every day and they’re never at the same park. This can also simplify your transportation considerations because there are always buses from the resort to the park and vice-versa.  There are not always park-to-park busses running and only a few of the parks are directly connected by other means. The parks quickly lose some luster and fun if everyone is tired and doing their best "Grumpy imitations."

Disney Movies with WDW Attractions
Tumblr media
So your trip to Disney World is all planned and the entire family is feeling the excitement of anticipation.  That is a good thing, and in fact to help keep the anticipation high you might think about watching some of the many Disney movies and then plan on the attraction. If you search on the internet you will find that a lot of them have something to do with the parks and you could share that with your children.  Below are our top seven picks.
Frozen
In EPCOT there is a Frozen ride in the Norway Country exhibit.  With any luck, you can get fast passes for it and save a lot of waiting time.  The ride is a mild thrill ride on a large boat passing through various scenes reminiscent of the movie, with some of the main characters talking to you as you pass them.  Again, it is a minor thrill ride, but you might want to sit close to your youngest children just in case they need a quick reassuring hug.
Elsa and Anna in the Frozen attraction at EPCOT
In For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration at Hollywood Studios you can sing Let It Go out loud along with some of the characters from the movie. This seated theater experience features stories, songs and special guests from the movie. Check daily schedules for show times.
There is are also character meets and greets where you can speak with Elsa or Olaf the snowman.
Toy Story
Another great Disney movie for your children to watch is Toy Story.  This year at the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival there was a topiary of Andy, the main character.
Andy
Beyond that, Hollywood Studios has a whole new section entirely dedicated to the movie, including the Slinky Dog Dash Rollercoaster.
The rollercoaster is definitely a thrill ride, so be prepared to give more hugs.  In this new area of Hollywood Studios, everything is designed with the movie in mind.  As you enter you pass by a giant Andy doll and will see others as you stroll through the area.  In fact, everything is oversized to give the illusion that you have shrunk down to toy size yourself.  You will most likely run into the Green Army Drum Corp and get to listen to their exciting drum show, scheduled many times during the day.
Alice in Wonderland
Many of Alice's adventures take her to places she has never seen or felt before. Join Alice on the Mad Tea Party in MK, and see her (sometimes with White Rabbit) at the meet and greets nearby. Additionally, she comes to Epcot in the UK pavilion. Purchase Alice merchandise in the nearby UK pavilion shops. Be sure to ask her if she had her tea yet today.
Mad Tea Party
Aladdin
After watching the Disney movie, be your best self and fly on the magic carpets of Aladdin in Adventureland of the MK. Aladdin and Jasmine regularly appear in Agrabah Bazaar or in Epcot's Morocco pavilion. Ask him about his latest adventure on his carpet or bring him an apple to help keep him out of trouble.
Beauty and the Beast
A trip to Hollywood Studios isn't complete without seeing Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage at Hollywood Studios. Be sure to look ahead for show times and get there early. If you want to meet and greet Belle, later on, find her in the France Pavilion at EPCOT. For a fun, interactive meet and greet she appears with Lumiere at the Enchanted Tales with Belle at Fantasyland MK. You may catch a glimpse of her in the Disney Festival of Fantasy parade as well. Beast occasionally will make an appearance after dinner at Be Our Guest also in the MK. You can find Gaston, recovering from his rejection by Belle at Gaston's Tavern in Fantasy land MK.
Beauty & The Beast Live On Stage
Star Wars
Take your pick of which one to watch or better yet watch them all! Whether you are a fan of the 70's movies or a new fan, there are lots to see and do that is Star Wars related. At Hollywood Studios join the Jedi Training Academy, travel with R2D2, and C3PO on Star Tours the Adventure Continues, or follow Captain Plasma up Hollywood Studios BLVD as she commands her squad of stormtroopers in The March of the Order. Kylo Ren, BB-8, and Chewbacca have photo ops at Star Wars Launch Bay. Find lots of Star Wars merchandise at the Star Tours gift shop, including building your own lightsaber.
Another opportunity is Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This extra paid event has Star Wars-themed sweet desserts, specialty drinks and an assortment of charcuterie (shahr-koo-tuh–ree) and cheeses. A charcuterie board most often consists of a variety of meats and cheeses and often fruit or nuts, After enjoying these desserts and drinks, you’ll be escorted to an exclusive reserved-viewing area where you can watch Disney Movie Magic and Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular.
Star Wars Galaxy Edge is scheduled to open on August 29, 2019. This is a highly anticipated star wars land which will immerse you in all things Star Wars related!  You will be able to visit planet Batuu and wander through the village of Black Spire Outpost.  You will even be able to ride the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.  Yes, that is the Millennium Falcon and you join in on a smuggler run.
Star Wars Galaxy edge model
Pirates of the Carribean
Take your pick or watch all five, then set sail with Captain Jack Sparrow on one of his many adventures on the Pirates of the Carribean attraction in Adventureland at the MK. Afterward, take part in the interactive scavenger hunt Treasures of the Seven Seas. Locate hidden treasures throughout Adventureland, while battling enemies with Captain Jack Sparrow. You'll fight pirate enemies like Captain Barbossa and Blackbeard to capture the Treasure of the Pacific, Treasure of the Mediterranean and others. If you succeed in completing all the tasks and gain all the treasures, you'll become an official pirate member of Captain Jack's crew! Captain Jack Sparrow regularly appears nearby.

Comprehensive Star Wars at Disney World Review
As you may or may not know, I just got back from Disney World. Obviously being a diehard Star Wars fan, I was very excited about the Star Wars activities in the parks. Certain things were extremely enjoyable and others were just ridiculous, so I thought for the sake of providing some helpful tips and information as well as giving my thoughts and critiques about the Star Wars experience at WDW, I’d write you guys a review! I’ll go through all the Star Wars attractions as well as my opinions about them, list all the stores for merch, etc.
SO, to start off
HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS
For those of you who are going to Disney World and don’t know this already, Disney World has four major theme parks (in addition to a shopping area and two water parks): the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios.
Hollywood Studios should essentially be renamed, “Hollywood Studios: The Star Wars Park,” because that’s where all the SW stuff is and 90% of the people in that park are there for the Star Wars attractions, which are:
Star Tours: This is the only actual Star Wars ride in Disney World, and it’s got an AT-AT at its entrance. It was originally built as a tribute to the Original Trilogy, but as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s been redone to encompass the prequel and sequel trilogies as well. The ride features C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8, and simulates a trip through space and over planets. Though the ride sends you through hyperspace and into battles, I don’t think it would make anyone sick. My mother is EXTREMELY sensitive to rides and gets bad motion sickness, and she had no trouble at all on the ride. It’s a lot of fun even if you’re not a huge Star Wars fan. Loses points due to the inclusion of Jar Jar Binks, but still absolutely worth it. Warning that you should probably use a Fast Pass to go on this ride, especially if you go on a weekend or during peak season (summer, school vacations, etc). As it is the only Star Wars ride, one of the classic attractions in the park, and one of the only fun rides in Hollywood Studios just in general, it usually has a sizable line.
Star Wars: The Path of the Jedi: This is a 10 minute long movie documenting “Luke’s journey from farm boy to Jedi Knight.” The film theoretically focuses on Luke’s path as he discovers the Force, strives to follow in his father’s footsteps, learns the truth of Anakin’s identity, and ultimately shows Luke’s arc from start to finish throughout the films. Although not as expository as it may have been, given that it includes only existing footage from the films without providing any additional commentary, the editing of the film does do a decent enough job of explaining the Force and showcasing Luke’s story. Voice-overs from Obi-Wan and Yoda as well as footage from the prequels and juxtapositions of Luke’s journey against Anakin’s provide for a fairly significant little movie. The only strangeness comes from the moments where Luke’s journey is sporadically sidelined in favor of what is essentially just highlights from the OT, regardless of whether or not the scenes are relevant to Luke’s path as a Jedi or not. Not exactly a deterrent, just not really what the little movie is advertised as being. What did bother me is that the last few minutes of the film focus not on Luke but on Rey and HER journey with the Force, which of course is again not what the movie was supposed to be about. It also comes off as slightly (read: very) depressing, as of course with the additions of TFA footage, the ending of the film is culminated by the destruction of Luke’s Jedi Order and the failure of his Jedi Path, the corruption of his nephew, and his exile, instead honing in on Rey as the new hero who must find the Force and “fix things.” Very much a sensation of “Luke isn’t the hero and now Rey is the hero instead”. Honestly up to you whether or not you want to sit through it. Despite my disdain for the treatment of the OT characters in the TFA, I still thought it was worthwhile simply for the fact that it was an opportunity to watch OT footage on the big screen for the first 8 minutes, which I’ve never before had the opportunity to do. Also bonus points for including Leia amongst its montage of powerful Force users on the side of the Light. PSA that this film does not run during Extra Magic Hours, so make sure to watch it during regular park hours if you’re interested.
Character Encounters: At Star Wars Launch Bay, in addition to displaying replicas of significant Star Wars props and scenes, you can stand in line to meet Chewbacca or Kylo Ren. I would definitely recommend this if you like either of those characters. You can use your own camera, so you don’t have to pay for the professionally taken photos of the encounter, and I only had to wait five minutes to meet Chewie. The costume was very authentic and the actor inside the suit was very believable as Chewie, to the point where I got choked up because it almost felt real. I obviously didn’t meet Kylo Ren, but I’m sure the experience is a good one for the fans that want to have their picture taken with him. In line you pass replicas of all the Force users’ lightsabers, Luke’s flight helmet, etc. You can meet the characters up until the park closes at 8 PM.
Rogue One Film: Also at Star Wars Launch Bay, there is evidently a ten minute long behind-the-scenes film about the making of Rogue One. I didn’t bother seeing it, but it showed every ten minutes and there was no line, so I would imagine if you’re a big fan of Rogue One it could be an interesting little movie.
Jedi Training: Only available for children ages 4-12. Little kids who are signed up at the beginning of the day (limited spots available) get to train as Jedi Knights and show their skills in battle. The kids seemed delighted when I saw the show, but keep in mind if you have a very shy five year old that the event draws a crowd that may be distressing for certain children. It was definitely super cute however, and could be an awesome experience and memory for children who love Star Wars and lightsabers and such.
March of the First Order: Every hour on the hour from 10-4, Captain Phasma and a troop of stormtroopers march down Hollywood Boulevard (the main street in the park) to the First Order’s theme. While I personally would have appreciated it more if it were OT stormtroopers walking to the Imperial March, it’s still cool to watch, especially if you liked TFA. It definitely has a certain effect on a Star Wars fan to see a stormtrooper marching along in front of you–pretty surreal, and transports you to a GFFA.  At the end of the march, Phasma and the troopers disperse into the crowd and threaten people to show their obedience to the First Order.
Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away: Every hour on the half hour from 11:30-5:30, this show takes place at the center of the park, at the end of Hollywood Boulevard and right in front of the Great Movie Ride. The show incorporates classic Star Wars music, footage from all the existing Star Wars universe films, as well as appearances on stage from Chewbacca, R2, Threepio, BB-8, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Phasma, Kylo Ren, and stormtroopers. I don’t like the new canon, but standing in a crowd of people loving Star Wars while footage from the OT was projected on an enormous screen and the music blasted all around was enough for me to ignore my dislike of Kylo Ren. I must say that the editing of the footage was very well done. Definitely recommend seeing the show at some point!!
Star Wars Galactic Spectacular: This is Hollywood Studios’ end of the night fireworks display, however in addition to the fireworks there is also footage from the films projected on the front of the Chinese Theater (the Great Movie Ride). Like the Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away show, the footage is well cut together, perfectly put to the music, features the characters we all know and love (Luke, Leia, Han, Padme, Anakin, Vader, Yoda, etc etc) and accentuated by lighting effects, fire, lasers, and fireworks. Definitely a must see. Be warned however that it is crucial to have an unobstructed view of the facade of the Chinese Theater, as the projections on the building are the focus of the show, with the fireworks being more an added bonus. If you can’t see the front of the building well, your experience will be negatively affected. The stage on which the Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away takes place will obstruct your view if you stand directly behind it (it’s located right in front of the Great Movie Ride) and there are also trees and the crowd to consider. The Galactic Spectacular starts at 7:45 (the park closes at 8) and crowds started gathering to claim spots an hour in advance. You may want to consider paying to be a part of the dessert party featured in every park for the fireworks display, which essentially gives you access to a roped off, VIP area from which to view the show while being served desserts and drinks.
In addition to these attractions, there is also a Star Wars guided tour you can take that brings you through a behind the scenes look at all the above attractions. In addition, stormtroopers stand outside the Star Wars Launch Bay (the building where the character encounters take place and the replicas are displayed and the Rogue One film is shown) which makes for a good photo opportunity. There’s also a speeder bike to sit on across from the Star Tours ride, obviously for picture purposes. Plus, you can get chocolate Darth Vader cupcakes in the Starbucks on Hollywood Boulevard, which I thought was delightful. It even had a little candy red lightsaber.
Overall it’s a lot of fun to be surrounded by Star Wars fans. I loved seeing all the little kids running around with lightsabers and holding BB-8 and R2 toys, and it’s just awesome to walk through the park hearing Star Wars music wherever you go or turning a corner and seeing a giant AT-AT or going on a ride and jumping to hyperspace. I was pretty happy, despite my very strong feelings about Disney SW canon.
MERCHANDISE AND SHOPPING
I scoured every single Star Wars store and took note of all the available merch, so to save you guys the time I wasted, here’s a run down. Just as a fair warning it should be noted that in every store, the majority of the merchandise is Rogue One primarily, followed by TFA, with OT and PT merchandise almost non-existent.
Stores in Hollywood Studios:
Tatooine Traders: This is the store you emerge into after getting off the Star Tours ride. The merch is pretty subpar, in my opinion, focusing mostly on toys. There’s build-your-own lightsabers and droids parts, some key chains and pins and such, action figures, Star Wars mouse ears, etc. The Star Wars pins are essentially the same in every store in the parks, most of it being Rogue One or TFA themed, with a few Chewbacca, R2, or other such ambiguous pins that could technically be representative of any of the films, despite the fact that the characters originated in the OT. The same goes for keychains. I think the choices were the droids, Chewie, stormtrooper, Kylo Ren, Boba Fett, or Vader. Those are essentially the only characters really featured in anything that’s not strictly TFA or Rogue One merchandise: for example, if the character on a shirt or the action figure in a box isn’t Jyn Erso or Poe Dameron or Rey, chances are it’s a droid or Chewie or a masked character (Vader, Boba Fett, Stormtrooper). Another thing to note is that “dark side” stuff and Empire/First Order merch is for some reason much more prevalent than any rebellion merchandise. As in several of the other stores, this store sells Tsum-Tsums, and is where I purchased the Hoth Leia one. I bought it not only because it was adorable, but also because it was the only Leia product in the entire store. Despite the Episode IV Han and Luke tsum-tsums being available on the Disney Store website, they were NOT sold in Tatooine Traders or in any other store on Disney property. The closest you could get were the Hoth edition Han and Luke tsum-tsums sold in a set with a wampa and taun-taun tsum-tsums (inside a larger taun-taun tsum-tsum) so that if you want Luke and Han to go with your Hoth Leia, you can’t just pay $6 for each of them but $35 for the set with three extra tsum-tsums you probably don’t even want. Again, these little plushies were essentially the only Han, Luke, and Leia items in the entire store, which is why I just went into that detail about freaking plush toys. I don’t think I need to get into the irony of a store called Tatooine Traders not selling any Luke Skywalker merchandise.
Star Wars Launch Bay: The building where you meet Chewie and Kylo Ren and see the Rogue One film and view the replicas also has a store inside. It should be noted that as opposed to other Star Wars stores in the parks, the Launch Bay store sells higher end, expensive collectibles. For example, Star Wars artworks for $150 and up. Star Wars collectible figurines. Customizable Star Wars merch (laptop cases and such) that you pay extra to put your name on. I believe this store also carried the soundtracks to the films, some action figures, and the new canon books. As a result of the “collectible” aspect of the store–ie, it’s catering to the die-hard fans of a certain kind who are willing to put down money to get their hands on the products they want–this is one of the few stores on the property that you’ll find original trilogy or prequel trilogy merchandise. Of course, I couldn’t buy any because it was expensive AF. Unfortunately, for example, there aren’t any cheaper alternatives to the expensive artwork. No posters or prints for fans who can’t afford to drop $350 on an Empire Strikes Back metal framed vintage movie still. I would also just like to briefly express my indignation regarding the fact that the one and only Leia artwork (featuring her in her slave attire, of course) is several times more expensive than any other piece in the store, because, as an employee explained to me, they raised the price when Carrie Fisher died. I was promptly disgusted that already-rich Disney felt the need to make money off her passing. Also, despite the fact that they stock collectible figurines for virtually every Star Wars character in existence (including Han, Luke, jawas, ewoks, Jar Jar Binks, Vader, etc etc) there was no Leia figurine to be found because they don’t carry it.
Legends of Hollywood: THIS STORE IS NOT SHOWN ON THE THEME PARK MAP DISTRIBUTED AT THE GATE. However, the store is located off to the right side of Hollywood Boulevard, past the Starbucks and around the bend, and is another Star Wars merchandise only store. OT posters decorate the outside and the sign over the door claims to have everything for Star Wars film fans. While still not a STELLAR selection, I will say this store probably has the best SW merch in the park. It has slightly less juvenile clothing than other stores and features items other than Rogue One and TFA. It also was the only place in Hollywood Studios where I found the Princess Leia Alex and Ani bracelet (along with the rest of the Star Wars collection) which I was told were selling out very fast. Also in the store were OT Disney-inspired mugs, Loungefly Star Wars purses, wallets, backpacks, etc, among other items. I’d say this store is your best bet for Star Wars apparel or accessories on Disney Property, especially for women.
Mickey’s of Hollywood: Though not a Star Wars specific store, this general Disney gift shop located on Hollywood Boulevard has, like all the general Disney Park gift shops, a Star Wars section. It features, again, lots of Rogue One and TFA merch, Star Wars pins, and smaller items. This store had the his and hers’ “I love you,” “I know” shirts, and was the only store in Hollywood Studios where I found the Han and Leia “I Love You” “I Know” collectible pin set, which apparently is another item quickly becoming increasingly difficult to find. There were also Star Wars “mystery pack” playing cards that included a Leia set, but unfortunately I didn’t buy them because there were twelve different varieties and no way to guarantee that I was purchasing the Leia playing cards. I did find, and this is the ONLY store on Disney property that had it, Princess Leia chocolates.
Stores outside of Hollywood Studios:
Merchant of Venus: This store is located in the Magic Kingdom and is NOT shown on the park map available at the park’s entrance. It is located in Tomorrowland near the Stitch Ride, and apparently used to sell Stitch merchandise that obviously wasn’t selling and instead became the Magic Kingdom’s only Star Wars store. I didn’t really see much in there that I hadn’t already seen in Tatooine Traders, Launch Bay, Legends of Hollywood, or Mickey’s of Hollywood, so I really doubt you’d be missing much by skipping it, unless of course for some reason you don’t go to Hollywood Studios. I believe it had mostly clothes and some toys (like the tsum-tsums and light-up R2 spinny toys and such) with maybe a few other nicer items here and there. Maybe Star Wars luggage? I only remember being underwhelmed.
Main Street Emporium: Located in the Magic Kingdom on Main Street USA. Like Mickey’s of Hollywood, this is a general Disney Store that just happens to have a Star Wars section, but unlike Mickey’s of Hollywood, it’s located in a park more focused on princesses and such, so the selection of Star Wars merch is much smaller. Mostly toys if I recall, and mostly Rogue One. Across the street in the jewelry store you can find the Star Wars jewelry collection.
Mouse Gear: Located in Epcot. Same deal as the Main Street Emporium, essentially, in that it’s Epcot’s general gift shop and it does have a Star Wars section.
Star Wars Galactic Outpost: Located in Disney Springs. This was the most disappointing store in Disney for me. It’s located in Disney’s designated enormous, high-end shopping complex and it’s a store devoted entirely to Star Wars, so logically you’d infer that it has a bigger selection and nicer merchandise than the park gift shops. Wrong. It has none of the nicer items found in Legends of Hollywood. Most of its merchandise can be found in other stores. The only apparel I saw in there that was unique to the store were a few men’s shirts: namely, a few Boba Fett shirts, a Jedi Order shirt, a stormtrooper shirt, a millennium falcon shirt, and a galactic empire shirt. First of all they were only MEN’S shirts and second of all they really weren’t that great at all. The design of the millennium falcon shirt was ugly and so overly THIS IS FOR A MAN!!!!!!!!! in nature (clearly done on purpose) that I couldn’t have even bought it for myself if it had come in my size, and of course the Boba Fett and Galactic Empire shirts were garbage I wouldn’t want to wear anyways. The only reason they’re even standing out to me is because they were some of the first things I’d seen that weren’t Rogue One of TFA.
World of Disney: Also located in Disney Springs, this is the largest Disney store in the world. It had a Star Wars section which had mostly things easily found in all of the other stores (stuffed BB-8s, stormtrooper pillows, action figures and toys, the same Rogue One and TFA apparel and products, etc) but with a few additional finds. I found a set of OT really nice magnets that I bought. This store also had the Star Wars Alex and Ani jewelry in the jewelry part of the store, and some Star Wars back packs and luggage in the accessories part.
All in all, I was extremely disappointed by the Star Wars merchandise in the parks. I ended up buying the Leia Alex and Ani bracelet, a Millennium Falcon mug, the Leia tsum-tsum, the Han and Leia pins, an R2-D2 pin, the Leia chocolate, and the set of magnets. That’s basically all the OT merch sold in all of Disney World, not counting the expensive collectibles sold in Launch Bay. There was hardly any OT merchandise at all–and before anyone argues that it’s because they’re trying to promote the newer films, I’d like to point out that there are FIVE ENTIRE STORES in Disney dedicated to selling ONLY Star Wars merchandise. It is absolutely ABSURD that in five stores devoted to Star Wars, you can hardly find anything with Han, Luke, or Leia on it. That’s not even to mention that the original trilogy is prominently featured in the Star Wars fireworks display and the Star Wars hourly show (as well as the PT), to the point where I’d say they show more OT footage and music during those shows than they feature Rogue One and TFA, and of course much of the replicas displayed in Launch Bay are OT replicas, and there’s an entire attraction in Hollywood Studios that’s supposed to be focused entirely on Luke’s journey. That being said, if you’re going to feature the OT in your attractions and shows and rides–that is to say, if it’s OT things that people are coming to do and see–why would you not then sell merchandise for them?
For any other character in Disney this would not be the case. If there’s a ride devoted to Snow White, or an entire fireworks display featuring Cinderella, you’d better believe you can buy merchandise for those characters and movies featured in the parks. And the whole “only promoting the new films” theory doesn’t even make sense when considering you can buy Disney merchandise for characters like Sleeping Beauty, whose movie is old AF, despite the fact that Disney is simultaneously promoting its new princesses and selling tons of Ana and Elsa and Rapunzel merchandise.
Plus, you’d think it would be a red flag for Disney marketers and researchers to realize that almost every single person in Hollywood Studios is walking around wearing a Star Wars shirt, but not ONE SINGLE PERSON that I saw was wearing one of DISNEY’S Star Wars shirts that they were selling in the gift shops. This is opposed to the other merchandise, where for example you could easily find many people wearing the princess or Mickey Mouse or castle apparel sold in the stores. I found a very nice original logo Disney long sleeve shirt in Epcot that I bought that only had a few colors left because it was selling so quickly and I only found it in two stores, as opposed to the Rogue One and TFA shirts that were sitting on the racks in literally every single store I went into, and not selling.
One has to ask then why the heck Disney wouldn’t do the smart thing and sell what people so obviously would buy: OT merchandise. If the exact same Disney logo shirt that I bought had had a little rebel starbird symbol on the front left over the heart instead of the Disney Logo, and the words REBEL ALLIANCE on the back across the shoulders instead of WALT DISNEY WORLD, it would have sold out in a HEART BEAT. If they stuck some ROTJ and ESB and ANH film poster images on shirts, or did some vintage Millennium Falcon hoodies or some Princess Leia shirts or something, they would sell. But they don’t carry them, which is truly bizarre.
The only explanation I can think of is that Disney came to the same conclusion that JJ Abrams reached when he decided to keep Luke out of the majority of TFA. He stated that he realized that Luke would “take over the story” if he were in it, and that it wouldn’t be about Rey anymore, and that the audience would be more focused on him. So what did he do? He kept Luke out of the story, even though it didn’t make much sense. I think Disney is doing the same thing with the merchandise. If they stocked a ton of amazing original trilogy merchandise, the Rogue One and TFA stuff wouldn’t sell (it’s not really selling as it is. I know because I asked). How many people would be jumping to buy a Krennic shirt if there were super unique and wearable and cool Luke Skywalker or Han Solo or Princess Leia shirts to pick from??? Not many people, that’s for sure. I bet they figured people would be more likely to buy the Rogue One and TFA apparel if it was the only choice they really had, which is a true shame, because there are stores called Tatooine Traders and Star Wars Galactic Outpost and several other STAR WARS STORES and you can’t even get quality Star Wars stuff in them. I’ve bought lovely Star Wars shirts from Kohl’s that are 100x better than literally ANY SINGLE SHIRT that I saw in any of the Disney stores.
I’d also like to point out that the design of the women’s apparel was truly revolting. First of all the material used in the women’s shirts was much thinner and flimsier and lower quality than the fabric used for the men’s shirts. All of the designs for the WOMEN’s apparel looked like they were designed with a ten year old in mind. Like, the shirts would easily fit in with garments sold in Justice for Girls or Limited Too or on that Shake It Up show on Disney Channel where those two preteen girls wore those over-designed outfits covered in sequins and corny designs. While some of the men’s Star Wars stuff was subtle and almost classy–the t-shirts being perfectly acceptable to wear in public, some of the nicer items–like black polo shirts with little embroidered Vaders on the front upper corner–were almost infuriatingly superior to the garish things designed for women. That’s not even to mention that as a woman, your ONLY options for Star Wars apparel are shirts with Jyn on them or shirts with Rey on them, that or one shirt with the Star Wars logo in sparkly font on an ill-fitted top made of thin cotton. No selection whatsoever.
And finally I’d just like to say, that while I had a lovely time and while I do love Disney and Disney World for many reasons, I did feel pretty annoyed that Disney was clearly willing to exploit the OT and Han, Luke, and Leia to get emotional reactions out of the crowd during the fireworks shows and such, and totally on board with exploiting Leia and Han’s love story via the merchandise, but they didn’t care enough at all to even give the original films respectful treatment in the new canon.
Anyways, I hope this is helpful for any future Disney-goers! I’m interested to hear other people’s experiences–did you like the merch? How did you feel about the attractions? Etc. And also of course anyone with a specific question can always feel free to message me and I’ll do my best to provide a helpful answer :)
BTW: I stayed in the Allstar Movie Resort, which had a Star Wars tribute in the lobby and played Star Wars music all the time in the gift shop, food court, lobby, and pool area :)

News Nuggets from Around Disney World
The Christmas season is in full swing at Disney World, and at Rope Drop [dot] Net HQ. The Magic Kingdom has it’s Christmas decorations up (and is having it’s “Very Merry” Christmas Parties), The Studios has its ‘Flurry of Fun”, and Epcot has it’s “International Festival of the Holidays.”
If you’re going to Epcot’s “International Festival of the Holidays” and thinking about trying out some of the food items available at the holiday kitchens, you can find the full menus here. Josh over at easyWDW also has a post with his favorite items, as well as reviews of the individual kitchens:
Canada Yukon Holiday Kitchen
China Shanghai Holiday Kitchen
Cookie Nook
Feast of the Three Kings
France Alsace Holiday Kitchen
Germany Bavaria Kitchen
Italy Tuscany Holiday Kitchen
Japan Hokkaido Holiday Kitchen
Mexico Las Posadas Kitchen
Morocco Tarabaki Holiday Kitchen
Refreshment Cool Post
United States American Holiday Kitchen
Now, with that out of the way, it’s time for the rest of the News Nuggets:
New Spy Glass Grille Restaurant at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort Set to Open in Early 2018 – Not a lot of details outside of “we know that it will feature Coca-Cola Freestyle machines.” Then again, do you really need anything else?
Mark Your Calendars For More Moonlight Magic in 2018 – Since Elyssa and I aren’t DVC members, we don’t track these dates too closely. If you are a DVC member, however, it might be worth checking this out.
List of Interactive Exhibits and More Details Revealed for the NBA Experience at Disney Springs – It’s going to require a separate ticket to do certain things? I thought it was going to just be a big restaurant like the Comcast grill at Uni.
Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen at The Magic Kingdom Radically Alters Menu Once Again – No more mac-and-cheese means I doubt I’ll ever convince Elyssa to eat here again. Josh from easyWDW has a review of the new items..
Permits Filed and Building Placement Revealed for Tron Coaster and Main Street Theater – Nothing exciting is revealed in these permits, but it’s at least some evidence that things are progressing.
Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Returns December 15th, The Last Jedi Scenes Being Added – Adding a little Last Jedi flavor for the holidays.
Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar Releasing “Jingle Cruise” Elephant Mug This Week – If I was already having a drink at Trader Sam’s I might pick one of these up. I’m not interested enough in them to wait in line in the morning for one, though.
Sushi Lands in The Cool Ship at the Magic Kingdom – To someone like me—who isn’t a sushi guy—this seems as strange as when I see sushi in a gas station.
easyWDW Review of Refurbished Room at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort – Josh takes a detailed look at the new Yacht Club rooms. They seem to follow the refurbishment trends of Pop and Coronado (which mirror the wider hotel trend of more minimalist design, with lots of “multi-use” space.) I like the room in the abstract, but I wish they could add a few more “theming” touches (like how the headboard used to look like it had a porthole in it.)
Disney Springs Christmas Tree Trail Debuts Extended Weekend and Holiday Hours – I enjoyed walking the Christmas Tree Trail last year, but this year felt much more cramped and crowded (I’m not sure if there were just more people there because of Santa being at the end, or if the path is actually narrower.)
Bon Voyage Tangled & Little Mermaid Breakfast at Boardwalk Expanded to Offer More Reservations – Now offered through noon (which is fine, since that “breakfast calzone” is a definitely fine for lunch.) I assume this is just for the Christmas season, though.
Disney CEO Iger is likely to extend his term beyond 2019 if Fox deal happens – It feels like Iger pretty much has a Supreme Court style “lifetime appointment’ at this point.
Guests Can No Longer Order Merchandise by Phone or Email from Disney Parks, Will Have to Rely on Shop Disney Parks App & ShopDisney – I never used the other methods, but I usually don’t have many issues with the iOS app.
Ray-Ban Sunglasses Featuring Mickey Mouse Are Back by Popular Demand – I hope this becomes an annual thing (so I don’t feel so much pressure to make sure nothing ever happens to mine.)
Transformation Details Revealed for Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort – Looks like an interesting concept. WDW News Today has a few additional images of the concept art.
Reunion Station at Wilderness Lodge to Offer Disney Vacation Club Members Paid Lounge Experience – Interesting. I wonder if you have to be a “direct purchase” member (or whatever that’s called) in order to do this.
easyWDW Review of Dinner and Chocolate Kitchen Sink Beaches and Cream at Disney’s Beach Club Resort – I share Josh’s thoughts on the food quality. These days, Elyssa and I grab a burger at Crew’s Cup before going to Beaches & Cream for dessert (though we might try Ale & Compass’ burger now.)
New Venues from Patina Restaurant Group, Including The Edison and Maria & Enzo’s, Take Their Place in the Disney Springs Story – “An adults-only scene for guests ages 21 and up” with “gravity-defying aerialists?” Great. (Though it’s probably not the best sign that the dates for the tour have already been delayed for a week.)
First Look: Brand-New Galactic Transformations at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique During Star Wars Day At Sea – There is an adult version. That said, you still have to get on a boat to do it.
Ample Hills Creamery at Disney’s Boardwalk to Offer ‘The Last Jedi’ Ice Cream Flavors – If they’re still there for NYE, I’m sure I’ll give them a try.
That’s it for this edition of the News Nuggets. Elyssa and I recently spent a day at Disney World and tried out Ale & Compass and a few other quick things. Hopefully, we’ll have those thoughts up shortly!
See you next time!

10 Thoughts from the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party
Tumblr media
Disney World has offered firework viewing dessert parties for a while now.  For a set price you get VIP firework viewing and all you can eat appetizers and desserts as well as all you can drink alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.  As someone who has been going to Disney since before the dessert party craze, I have always found the hunt for the perfect fireworks spot part of the nostalgia of Disney World.  I couldn’t see how these parties could be worth the price or the hype; but with my hubbies birthday coming up and the hunt for a perfect gift under foot, I decided to give the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party a try and it was not what I expected.
Here are my 10 first impressions and thoughts during the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party:
1. Wow, this is a lot of food!
I knew it was all you can eat sweets, but I was thinking maybe 5 different types of desserts and a few grape/cheese kebabs …. That was NOT the case.  There were 3 or 4 tables set up just for the food with both appetizer and dessert options.  This easily was enough to turn the Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party into a full meal.  I was so busy enjoying myself (and stuffing my face) that I didn’t get nearly the amount of pictures of all the items; but I will be doing a separate post later, reviewing it and listing them all out.

2. Is that a bartender?
Kind of like the food, I knew there was all you could drink beverages and expected a table of premade, overly sweet, and weak libations… boy, was I wrong.  When you walk into the party area there is a small bar to the left with a bartender shaking and pouring each drink by request.  There were a few pre-mixed, punch style options but this guy also was making rum and cokes and other drinks as asked.  These drinks were not weak by any sense of the word! The punches were good and worth the price you would pay for a single mixed drink at a restaurant.  I was impressed.
3. It’s the dessert of the future!
My favorite part was a table at the back of the room with a container of liquid nitrogen.  They were making these awesome ice cream style Freeze-Fried Nutella Truffles right in front of you.  There was Chocolate and Strawberry toppings!!!  I, of course, had to have one of each and was in heaven with both.  It was so neat watching this be made. The chef cracked them open in your bowl and you got to watch them smoke while you carried them back to your table.  This was by far the coolest part. (Pardon the pun, I could not resist)
A post shared by DisMagic Moment (@dismagic_moment) on Oct 9, 2017 at 4:36pm PDT
4. Where are the chairs?
Other than the tables for the food, there were small (I mean very small) round tables for guests to eat at.  Some were bar height and some were normal table height, but there were no chairs.  Everybody was standing around these tables eating.  At first, I was not thrilled about the thought of having to stand through this entire party, but I soon wasn’t concerned.  The tables were so close together that everyone ended up talking to each other and we got to meet some great people.  It did give it more of a “party” vibe and there was a lot of mingling going on.  We ended up chatting about Star Wars with other enthusiasts which was a neat experience and a total surprise. With all the food, and wanting to try so much, the standing also didn’t seem so bad because we were constantly walking back and forth filling our plates and cups.
5. OMG Storm Troopers!
The party is inside the Star Wars character meet and greet and memorabilia area at Hollywood Studios and because of that there were Storm Troopers walking around occasionally.  They interacted with the guests and were cute with the kids. It was nice getting that much interaction with them, especially when they helped the entire party get through Disney crowds to get to our fireworks viewing area.  This made the event more immersive for sure.

6. One for the road? Don’t mind if I do!
When we first checked in, we were told to grab a drink to take with us and that it was encouraged.  This was not something that you had to tell my husband twice!  The coffee station had cups with lids and we both got drinks to go.  There were also canned soda and bottled water that were unopened and easy to grab on the way out.  I am glad they suggested this because it was nice having something to sip on while watching the fireworks, especially in the hotter parts of the year.
7. This is a serious gift!
They tell you that you are going to get a gift at the party and will be receiving a Star Wars collectors cup.  I was expecting a small cup like the movie theaters give away during the releases, or maybe something like you would see at McDonalds… but no.  Disney did it again and surprised me with one of their $20 huge character cups that are found at some of the stands throughout the park.  Apparently, these are rotated out because past gifts have been Chewbacca themed but we received a huge Tie Fighter cup for EACH PERSON in the party!  These things were so big that they came with a lanyard so you could wear it around your neck to help hold it.  I was afraid we wouldn’t get them into our luggage and wasn’t sure what to do with them when we got home, but it worked out and I found a great use for them in the house that I will post about later.  It ended up being the perfect gift.

8. That’s right! VIP coming through!
Typically, I am not a person that feels the need to be treated like a princess, but Disney is so good about making everyone feel like royalty.  We checked into the party early to get our lanyard/badge and rode a few rides before the party opened.  I felt like a real VIP wearing that around the park for the next hour, but the star treatment hit when we started walking to our VIP firework viewing spot while being led by storm troopers.  We had to walk through the crowd and there were cast members with lights directing people out of our way.  The only thing missing was my crown.
9. This really is the perfect spot!
The roped off area for VIP viewing was bigger than I expected.  Everyone around us was scrunched up together and packed like sardines and I could have done a cartwheel if I wanted to (or was physically able, but that’s a whole other issue).  There were no chairs again, but in hindsight, I don’t see how there could be because the entire crowed is on their feet anyway.   Other than Fantasmic, which is in a stadium seating area, this was the best experience I have ever had viewing a fireworks show.
10.TOTALLY WORTH IT!
I am not going to lie, I had reservations about this experience and its price.  I took a chance and booked it as a birthday gift for the hubby and I am SO glad I did.  These dessert parties have been popping up around Disney World for a while now and I have never been interested in them in the past, but now I am considering going out on a limb and trying a few more.  Considering the $20 gift, a full meal (of appetizers and desserts), and all you can drink, it is a good value and definitely something I would recommend.
