Karst Stone Paper - journal review
Decided to try out a new brand of journal and thought I'd post a lil review. I didn't find one when I was ordering it, so maybe someone else will find this helpful (:
I bought a Karst A5 dot notebook. Mostly because it was the only really good color red notebook I would find and I was looking for red. Also though, I was really interested in it because the paper is not made from trees. It's made from sustainably recycled stone! I thought it was super cool and ya know, save the environment.
I did a light sketch using a Blackwing pearl pencil. Even with very light pressure, the pencil goes on suuuuper dark. Extremely smooth, zero drag. My pencil was super sharp, and you can tell. There's a lot of raised through on the other side of the page, though it does taper off later in the drawing as my pencil dulled, so if you don't go in with a freshly sharpened, or if you aren't a pencil person, you'd be alright.
Tumblr media
Now, my biggest complaint. (And probably a deal breaker for its intended purpose as my daily journal, still trying to decide.)
Tumblr media
I tried to erase my sketch to go over it in pen, and it will not erase. Not even with ole betsy Staedtler Mars. I eventually gave up trying and just started inking because I was like whelp might as well make this a test subject instead of a sketch in a journal I use every day, at this point.
Ink goes on really well. Honestly, surprisingly well given how much smeared lead it was going over. You can see the ink through the other side, but there is zero bleed through to the other side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if you're ink only, and don't care about being able to erase or use a sharp pencil, this could be the journal for you. But I wouldn't recommend it to a pencil artist or someone wanting to be able to edit their to-do list.

Staedtler's new Mars 502 Lead Pointer Tub box
I’m not sure why, but the most popular video on the Bleistift YouTube channel is a video explaining how to use Staedtler’s lead pointer. How to use a lead pointer tub might not be that obvious. That must certainly a factor contributing to the video’s popularity, but it still doesn’t explain why the video remains popular to this day. Many of the comments show that buyers of the lead pointer…

Thinking about social media and how it still has me feeling like i must stretch myself thin to appeal to the arcane forces of The Algorithm and Trends is making me want to die a little bit so i'll continue being a recluse until i can find a suitable fluid to cradle my brain in that lets me not feel that pressure anymore. I'm still working on thinking of myself as a person and not a performing toy object sort of thing! I'd like my approach and presentation of myself on-line to be maybe not wildly different, but more enthused, "personal," and real. Not a re-invention of myself so much as letting me be ME in the first place! my favorite pencil to draw with on paper is the staedtler mars lumograph 8b and you should give one a try if you feel so inclined

Okay there is no new art or anything today (the how i do stuff is w.i.p.) but i got a few new pencils and a pen last week and i wanted to do a new comparison.
I'm putting it under a cut because it is really not scientific nor professional, simply a random observation from someone who draws as a hobby and i know there is a limited amount of people who would be interested in that.
The pencils in question:
Tumblr media
Faber-Castell (triangle) 2B Faber-Castell 9000 2B Faber-Castell Pitt Matt 2B Faber-Castell Pitt-Matt 4B Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth 1500 4B Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth 1500 2B Koh-i-Noor 1770 2B Staedtler Noris 2B Staedtler Mars Lumograph black 2B Deli 2B Tombow Mono100 2B
The pens in question:
Tumblr media
uni-ball Signo white Sakura Gelly Roll 0.5 white
The comparison
The upper white line is the GellyRoll, the lower white line is the uni-ball. The blended column was blended with one of those woodless white pencils, not a paper blender stump or anything. Also please just ignore how bad i am with the layout
Tumblr media
I mainly kept to the 2B hardness, i'll explain why there is two 4B-s included when i get to them. So let's go over them one-by one.
Faber-Castell (triangle) 2B Trusted friend. Slightly lighter than the usual 2B pencils but it is reliable, looses sharpness somewhat slower than most. Smudges less then most. Mid range price.
Faber-Castell 9000 2B Cool stuff. It is very smooth, blends very nicely, the smudgeing isn't too bad. Upper mid range price.
Faber-Castell Pitt Matt 2B Novelty but for what. I first bought this because i was excited about the supposedly less shine this has over other graphite pencils. Which is exciting, needing less editing after scanning. What i did not know at the time, that for the same saturation you have to purches 2 up to get the same result. So initially i was utterly disappointed with the 2B because i just wasn't able to get the level of depth and darkness that i like. Upper mid range price, not sure i would recommend, but it is fun to try once. Upper range price.
Faber-Castell Pitt-Matt 4B Enter 4B version. This is what a 2B pencil is. This one redeemed the 2B one. It actually is about the same result as the F-C 9000. They are fun but.. not really that special. Yes there is somewhat less shine to them but i don't think they worth the price just for that. Upper range price.
Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth 1500 4B Only included to serve as comparison to the Pitt Matt 4B. Low price range.
Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth 1500 2B Reliable. Reasonably smooth, nothing special but in a good way. Low price range. Holds sharpness relatively well. Low price range.
Koh-i-Noor 1770 2B My oldest friend. Bit scratchier than the K-i-N 1500 but nothing too abrasive. Holds sharpness relatively well. Worst blendability. Cheap.
Staedtler Noris 2B An oldie but a goodie. I know this is many people's favourite, and not without reason. It's nice, reasonably smooth. For my tastes it looses sharpness a bit faster than i'd like. Cheap.
Staedtler Mars Lumograph black 2B Now this one is a new one for me and i am not that floored by it. It is a nice and smooth feeling pencil but i don't feel the step up in price is bigger than the step up in how it feels to use. Upper range price.
Deli 2B This feels very close to the Lumograph actually. I would not be surprised if the goal was a more accessable alternative. It is nice and smooth, very nice blendability. Cheap.
Tombow Mono100 2B Now this. To be honest this is the one where i actually felt like a significant difference. This one is nice to hold, feels so good on paper, it is smooth, blends nicely. I'm loving everything about it. I'd consider this an expensive one, but i'm not mad about it. This one actually has ther shits to cost more than the rest.
For the two white pens, you can see how well they work on graphite. Both is pretty nice, they don't really differ in price either. I am more partial towards the GellyRoll, because it has a bit more opacity to it, but honestly the uni-ball is almost as good and the application of that is much much smoother. So they are about on equal grounds. It all comes down to preference really.
So yeah, that's me for today i guess. ✌🏻

Sofi Black and White 2D Design No. 1, June 6, 2024 Pen & Ink Drawing, 7" x 7"
Supplies used : Kura Toga mechanical pencil (.05 lead) Staedtler Mars plastic eraser, Sakura Microliners (01 & 05) Tombow brush pen, Dick Blick multi media paper.
I Completed this composition today which I had been working on a bit each day for the past 3 days. I really like the composition, but the lines aren't as clean as I'd like them to be. I've got a couple more compositions to work on, but I think eventually I'd like to recreate this one on Illustration Board with my Rapidograph pens. Microliners are ok, but they really can't replace the more traditional version of ink pens.

shoutout to derwent graphic graphite pencils for being so dogshit while daring to be just as if not more expensive than Castell 9000s, Staedtler Mars Lumographs or fucking Koh-I-Noor Hardmuth 1500s

Hi 💜 your demon dean piece is looking wonderful! Would you be willing to share what pencils you like to use?
Hey there... Thank you so much :) He is taking on a life of his own... Yes of course! I have loads…I always start a drawing with my old Derwent graphics 2H which is really smooth and subtle from so much shading. (I've literally been using it for years) Derwent graphics pencils are pretty affordable.
I mainly use the Staedtler mars technico leadholder Clutch Pencil 2mm, they are brilliant, and you can get the leads anywhere. I use a range from 2h to 2B. I also have a set of the traditional Staedtler mars lumograph pencils.
Staedtler also do a really good lead only one called allXwrite…I have two of those.
One of my favourite pencils for the end of an artwork when the darker tones are applied is a Tombow Mono 6B, really soft but very creamy black. Tombow are a great brand. (they also do a great slimline eraser tool for picking out details like hair)
Expensive but very good are the Palomino blackwing pencils…I have three of them, but as a whole they are a bit expensive for me.
You can get low graphite staedtler ones, which are very ‘black’, they are called Mars lumograph ‘black’.
General pencils are a great brand, and do good charcoal pencils, their 6B one is so creamy and very black. I have to order them online as they are a US company.
Also I use wet and dry to sharpen my pencils as well…it gets a nice sharp edge. Hope that's OK? Have a lovely weekend xx

What’s inside my pencil case?
Tumblr media
No sponsorships. No affiliate links.
Some sustainable options, some really freaking not. Most of these have been legitimate game changers.
From left to right:
Pentel pocket brush pen I've had this for years. It's practical but not water resistant unless you refill it with pigment-based fountain pen ink.
Sakura Gelly Roll Not my favourite pen but good in a pinch/on the run. If I'm home and need white ink, I would rather use a dip pen in Daler Rowney FW acrylic ink because it's MUCH more opaque and water resistant and not a single use plastic pen. I do not recommend this pen.
Isograph .20 technical pen. Imagine microns but sans felt tip and infinitely refillable. A bit of an investment but worth it in the long run. mircon prices are out of this world and also single-use plastic.
Not Tuff Stuff?? Used to be called the Tuff Stuff eraser but then got discontinued. Now called the Factis BM2 Mechanical Eraser but I still call it Tuff Stuff because I can't seem to remember the new name until I'm staring at refills in the store. It's the best. It's so much thinner and stronger than a normal mechanical eraser. Changed my life.
Sailor Pro Gear Slim Shikiori 14K The galaxy pen. My daughter. Available in a bunch of colours. The Pro Gear Slim is an """entry level""" gold nib fountain pen. Got it for the price of two switch games and haven't needed to buy a pen since. Also, it always writes. You can fill it with any colour of fountain pen ink you can imagine (clean between colours). Sensory HEAVEN. Mine's inked with Sailor Manyo ink in Sumire.
MUJI wooden mechanical pencil 0.5mm I like this mechanical pencil that's not too long. I'm normally a 0.7 person because I press too hard but I dig it. The wood feels sooooo nice in my hand.
Staedtler 0.5mm pencil lead. 'nuff said.
Pentel Ain eraser.  Works a bit better than Staedtler Mars for me and is smaller so it runs out before it can get hard and crusty.
Whiper Mr correction tape. I like it because it doesn't take up as much space as other correction tape. I don't use it much but I like knowing that if I need to replace the correction tape, I can at least only buy a refill instead of replacing the whole thing. I wouldn't argue that it's sustainable since it still uses plastic tape but hey, it's the lesser of evils in a rare pinch.
I also have a beat up 15cm/ 5" plastic ruler I've had since getting it in my middle school geometry kit. not pictured because I forgot it at home: generic water brush pen.
Everything but the Gelly Roll can be refilled, which I prefer for both the planet and my wallet. I used to be averse to investing in supplies that cost a bit more upfront but very slowly saving up for a splurge has proven to be pretty economical in the long-run.
