There is a city that froze in the midst of summer. It has remained frozen ever since, stuck in time when they were promised safety, but instead were taken to their graves. The city is frozen, reliving the horrors of a newborns blood staining the earth, wind carrying the echoes of screams from chests and throats of grieving mother, wives, daughters, sisters still searching for the bones of her children, husbands, fathers, brothers...
Srebrenica remains frozen, coming alive every year only during the very days that had turned it into a mass grave, when more pieces of those who are lost forever are put to rest. Their loved ones remain haunted, taunted by the perpetrators who deny the genocide they've committed, who threaten to repeat it, who use it as a joke, as a way to inflict pain, even now, 28 years later.
8372 civilians were killed in a " UN safe zone". Every year, on July 11th, more of them are found and given a proper burial, most of them incomplete as the bodies were scattered, some after death while the mass graves were dug, others when they dug them up to move the bodies to hide their crimes.
So many are still missing, so many grieving families never found closure before they too passed. Remember what happened in Srebrenica, don't forget those of them out there who are still actively threatening to "finish the job".

Massacre In #Srebrenica
Srebrenica, BOSNIA - JULY 1995: Bosnian women and children pictured at the Tuzla airport set up as a refugee camp for those fleeing Srebrenica. In July 1995 the worst case of genocide since World War II took place at Srebrenica in Bosnia. Over a period of five day Bosnian Serb army took control of the small spa town and separated Muslim males from their families. Over 7,000 men and boys were systematically murdered in the fields and valleys around the area. (Photo by Tom Stoddart/Getty Images)

‘It’s not just Israel on trial’: Bosnian war survivor’s support for genocide case Arnesa Buljušmić-Kustura fears case against Serbia 30 years ago will become precedent and is calling on UN court to act Geneva Abdul Geneva Abdul @GenevaAbdul Thu 18 Jan 2024 02.00 EST Last modified on Thu 18 Jan 2024 06.56 EST After watching South Africa’s case against Israel at the UN court last week accusing the state of committing genocide in its military campaign in Gaza, Bosnian war survivor Arnesa Buljušmić-Kustura felt compelled to act. As a child living under siege in Sarajevo, her relatives were among the 100,000 killed during the 1992-95 war. While her father survived being imprisoned in a concentration camp, the remains of other relatives have yet to be found. At the age of five, she recalls being shot at by a sniper while collecting water from aid trucks. Reminded of the atrocities of the war and the Srebrenica genocide, she fears the landmark case brought against Serbia for genocide in The Hague decades ago – which found that genocide did take place in Srebrenica but cleared Serbia of direct intent to commit genocide – will become the precedent for other genocide cases. “It is crazy that 30 years later we are still in the same position, having the same discussions,” said Buljušmić-Kustura, a genocide educator in London. “We’re really on the precipice right now where it is not just Israel that is on trial, in a way it is the entire international humanitarian law and the framework of it.” After watching proceedings in The Hague last week, Buljušmić-Kustura has gathered more than 1,000 signatures from Bosnian genocide and war survivors across Bosnia, the US and the UK in an open letter to the international court of justice (ICJ). It calls on the UN court to prevent the repetition of history by implementing the “provisional measures” put forward by South Africa requiring actions, such as a ceasefire, to mitigate the risk of genocide. ...For Ahmed Hrustanović, the letter to the ICJ is a small act that survivors can take. “That court could [have] stopped the war in former Yugoslavia, but they didn’t. So they now have the chance to make it better for the people in Palestine. They didn’t help us, and what happened? Genocide in Srebrenica,” Hrustanović said.

High-Level commemorative event to mark the First International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.
Srebrenica marks one of the darkest chapters in modern human history. The war that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia claimed more than 100,000 lives in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995, mostly of Bosnian Muslims, and displaced more than two million others. The list of atrocities committed during that time is overwhelming, but Srebrenica, without a doubt, became its darkest chapter. Previously declared as the UN "safe area," 8,372 women, men, and children were systematically executed in July 1995 in and around the town of Srebrenica, the largest atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.
On 11 July, the people of Srebrenica will gather yet again around silent tombstones in Potočari to mark the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide. This year, they will add 14 more to the 6751 already standing in the Memorial Centre Potočari. 14 families will finally have closure. Pain, however, will remain forever.
On this day, 11 July, International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica, pursuant to the General Assembly Resolution 78/282, we will add our voice in remembering their names and commemorating all innocent lives lost. But we will also send a strong message of hope, the resilience of the human spirit, and the power of justice.
Organized by the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the UN and cosponsored by the Permanent Missions of Albania, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Rwanda, Slovenia, Sweden, Türkiye to the UN.

"Not a day passes, nor single night, that some tiny voice in me doesn't whisper, that the blood isn't rushing in my ears, reminding me; I'm just a braid of war-torn DNA, genocide is sewn into my veins, my blood is made up of that which has been spillt. I'm just some disordered symptom of a modern ethnical cleansing."

Srebrenica was declared in 1993 a safe zone by the UN, and it fell in. In 6 days, over 8000 Muslim men, children, and elderly people were killed and burried in mass graves.
Rafah was declared a safe zone by Israel, and it was a lie. The Palestinian people keep getting killed and displaced from the area. We don't even know the full count yet with how much Rafah keeps getting bombed.
Can the international community please, PLEASE stop failing people who are in dire need of help?

Survivor recalls horrors of #Srebrenica
(10 Jul 2021) Through tears and in between fraught silences, Devla Ajsic refuses to remain quiet any longer, as she walks around the former Dutch U.N. compound where she was sexually abused over 20 years ago. Ajsic was 21-years-old and three months pregnant in July 1995 when she was repeatedly sexually assaulted in Srebrenica while her fiancé and thousands of other mostly Muslim men and boys were taken away and executed in Europe's only acknowledged genocide since World War II. For decades, Ajsic did not talk openly about the horrors she endured after Bosnian Serb forces stormed the eastern Bosnian town in July 1995, in the waning months of the Balkan country's 1992-95 war. "I locked it all inside for 26 years and suffered in silence", said the now 47-year-old Ajsic, steeling herself to finally speak publicly about her past on the eve of the 26th anniversary of the massacre on Sunday. When Bosnian Serb forces captured Srebrenica, which had been declared a U.N. "safe haven" for civilians in 1993, about 30,000 of its terrified Muslim residents rushed to the U.N. compound at the entrance to town in the hope that the Dutch U.N. peacekeepers there would protect them. However, the outgunned and outnumbered peacekeepers watched helplessly as Serb troops took some 2,000 men and boys from the compound for execution, raped the women and girls, and then bused the women, children and elderly to Bosnian Muslim-held territory. Ajsic said she was sexually assaulted and tortured for three days before departing Srebrenica in one of the last buses packed with refugees. "The things they did to me, they tied me to a desk, my neck and my chest were blue from bruises, I was sprawled naked on that table," she recounted, sobbing. The Associated Press typically doesn't name sexual abuse victims except in cases where they opt to speak publicly. Ajsic said the Serb soldiers drugged her, clouding her mind, but even so she was acutely aware she was not the only woman kept bound and subject to horrific abuse in a hangar of the then-U.N. compound. She believes her personal nightmare, including the loss of the fetus she had to abort after fleeing Srebrenica, is dwarfed by the week long Bosnian Serb killing spree in which over 8,000 mostly Muslim men and boys from the town perished. Most of the victims were hunted down and executed as they tried to flee into nearby forests. Their bodies were plowed into hastily dug mass graves and then later excavated with bulldozers and scattered among other burial sites to hide evidence of the crime. Many wives, mothers, sisters and daughters of those killed in Srebrenica have dedicated their lives to fighting for the truth about what happened to their men. Yet, in over a quarter-century, only a handful have publicly spoken of the sexual abuse they suffered during the fall of Srebrenica. The women stubbornly stood their ground when confronted with political opposition to their request to set up a memorial cemetery across from the former Dutch U.N. base, where on every July 11 since 2002 they have reburied the remains of their loved ones. So far, the remains of more than 6,600 people have been exhumed from mass graves, identified by forensic analysis and reburied at the site. The remains of 19 more victims will be laid to rest there Sunday. Srebrenica's Bosniak Muslim women were also key to cases brought against the United Nations and the Netherlands over the failure of the Dutch U.N. troops to protect the town's civilians in 1995, and the adoption of a European Parliament resolution commemorating July 11 as the Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.

saw someone on twitter, whose family is in gaza, say the same thing: her sister told her that israelis are executing palestinian men and boys aged over 16, abducting them, forcing them to strip. these are displaced civilians and survivors. some people are defending the forceful stripping by saying that the purpose is to ensure there's no bomber vest/weapons which is ridiculous bec if that was the purpose, why are they taking pictures like trophies and circulating them online? why do they even suspect civilian men and boys trying to find safety with their families to be wearing a bomber vest? israelis have been releasing videos of stripping and beating palestinians since oct 7 - many of the palestinians victimized this way have been from the west bank. palestinians held in israeli jails are also stripped and beaten in a way that is hauntingly reminiscent of american crimes in abu ghraib prison in iraq.
#idk how ppl r tryna explain away this thing#ur telling me these people bombed hospitals but forcecully stripping men is where they draw the line?#they are depraved and perverted they enjoy torturing palestinians like this#guess they learn from the american soldiers#free palestine#palestine#gaza#from the river to the sea palestine will be free#glory to the martyrs#long live palestine#death to israel#long live the resistance#abu ghraib#bosnian genocide#srebrenica

UNGA President remarks at the High-level Commemorative Event on the occasion of the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.
His Excellency, Elmedin Konaković, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I thank the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina for their invitation to this solemn gathering.
In April 1993, the United Nations Security Council declared Srebrenica a safe area.
Yet, in July 1995, this supposed sanctuary became the site of the largest massacre in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
Over 8,372 lives were lost, thousands were displaced – and entire families and communities were devastated.
Nearly three decades after this horrific chapter of History, survivors and their families continue to draw strength from their pursuit of justice and reconciliation.
Both the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice have recognized this massacre as an act of genocide.
The lessons of Srebrenica are clear: intolerance and bigotry – when allowed to flourish – culminate in atrocities beyond comprehension.
We must always remain vigilant and guard against rhetoric that dehumanizes, degrades, and discriminates against a particular group.
Because such rhetoric is always rooted in hate, and – left unchecked – always leads to unspeakable evil.
While it is essential to prosecute the remaining perpetrators of the Srebrenica genocide, we cannot accept any attempt to simply forget or deny the enormity of what transpired.
We simply cannot allow this to happen.
The United Nations General Assembly’s designation of 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica is therefore a timely act – to not only recognize the victims and their families; but also pay tribute to survivors who have tirelessly fought to keep the memory of Srebrenica alive and ensure that such atrocities never happen again.
Upholding this responsibility is fundamental to the mission of the United Nations.
Genocide denial will neither lead to justice nor peace, and every nation – regardless of its distance to Bosnia-Herzegovina, or its own history – has a responsibility to uphold international court decisions that bring justice to survivors and prevent genocide within its own borders.
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, this commemoration is more relevant than ever – as divisive rhetoric and attempts to create divisions run wider, louder, and deeper than ever before, around the world.
It offers a chance for significant societal transformation.
From Europe to the Middle East, this period of global upheaval prompts essential questions about our way of life, our shared future – and how we treat one another.
As we approach the thirtieth anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in 2025, let us reflect on and learn from this darkest chapter in our history, to help prevent its tragic repetition.
This commitment demands that we acknowledge the profound suffering of survivors and the families of victims.
It requires unwavering opposition to any denial, distortion, or falsification of incontrovertible facts.
And above all, it calls on us to relentlessly pursue justice and truth – for that is the only path to fostering sustainable peace and genuine reconciliation.
Let us use this new International Day to honour those lost, educate [future] generations, unite communities, and combat hate in all its forms – I repeat: in all its forms..
This is essential to ensure that everyone – regardless of race, faith, or nationality – feels safe in their communities.
I leave you with the wise words of Maya Angelou, the famed African American writer:
“History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.”
To write a brighter future acknowledging the truth about the Srebrenica genocide is essential — not only as a matter of justice for its victims, but as a cornerstone for lasting peace.
I thank you.
