Assorted pictures I took at On traXS 2024 in the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht, NL.
These are nowhere near all of the layouts that were there, it was just too damn hard to physically get to everything because of the crowds.

This day I went to the Railway Museum with my daughter. She enjoyed herself with the 'roller coaster' and the other attractions. I had my tripod with me and had a great time. Heute war ich mit meiner Tochter im Eisenbahnmuseum. What is your favourite place
a) in the UK?
b) in Germany?
c) elsewhere?
thanks for the ask anon!!!!!
taking this more as like holiday destinations or places i've occasionally visited rather than places i go to regularly bc i live near there (also don't want to doxx myself)
a) Folkestone, particularly the indie bookshop there! my lovely cousin lives there so we visit a fair bit and it's just such a beautiful seaside town with some wonderful independent businesses and a great arts scene
b) Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg! i am such a sucker for miniature replicas of things idk why it's just so good, and Miniatur Wunderland had so many amazing things in it. not somewhere i visited on my year abroad though so i'd love to go back there. in terms of places in the city where i was for my year abroad - the cat café! so so lovely many nice fluffy friends and good food
c) i went on some really lovely holidays as a kid but was Straight Up Not Having A Good Time for most of my childhood bc AuDHD so most of my old holiday memories are of me being overwhelmed or sad even if the things we did were themselves really nice and it's only really been recently that i've enjoyed trips i've gone on bc i can actually regulate my feelings and deal with stuff now! yay!
so saying that - probably Utrecht! i visited it this year and i just love the Netherlands, frikandelbroodje, kroketten, hagelslaag, canals, Dutch, Nijntje, the spoorwegmuseum, the speelklokmuseum, the brunch restaurant we went to... also travelling alone really helped me with my confidence and i was able to be really mindful and actually experience what i was seeing so yeah!
thanks for the ask!!!!

NWR Roster Headcanons: Edward the Blue Engine
As promised, here’s my headcanons for Edward. I hope you enjoy them.
Built in 1896 as Furness Railway N° 36, it was originally intended that he would pull express trains like the other Seagulls. But they quickly discovered his reputation for shy steaming and had him assigned to lesser duties.
When Edward first arrived on the North Western Railway to help finish construction, he still wore his Furness livery and number, only gaining his blue livery after being purchased  in 1920.
During the period where he was confined to the sheds, Edward first developed his knack for storytelling after hearing the cleaners trying to scare each other with ghost stories.
Although it was glossed over in the books, Edward was completely worn out by the war’s end, and was thus only steamed up in emergencies, only being fully overhauled in 1952 due to a maintenance backlog at Crovan’s Gate.
By 1956, it was clear that he could no longer keep up with his banking duties. This led The Fat Controller to purchase Bertha to permanently take over as banking engine. Edward then served as the utility engine until 1959, when Donald and Douglas took on this role.
While undergoing repairs following his infamous exploit, he somehow became pen pals with NS N° 107, a steam engine on display at the Spoorwegmuseum. The two still exchange letters to this very day. With a little help from humans, of course.
In 2014, Edward was repainted in Furness Red for the NWR Centenary, only regaining his blue livery in 2016.
And, that’s Edward’s post done. Next up is Big Green himself, so look forward to Henry’s post.

(The Railway Museum) ‘’The most exciting train station in the Netherlands’’
Location: Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands Price: 17,50 / Train workers 10,- Duration: 2,5 - 5 hours Transport: The train stop ‘’Utrecht Maliebaan’’ is right in the museum. Language: Dutch / English Activities: look inside old trains, Roller-coaster, drive in a train simulation, Theater. Date of visit: Friday 14th of April 2023 Website
I was standing on the sation of Utrecht deciding what museum to visit today, when i heard the broadcasting station voice say ‘’the train the Het Spoorwegmuseum leaves in 10 minuuts’’.
So it was clearly a sign. I went to the museum before some weeks back, but then there was a convention for miniature train builders. It was so full and warm in there that I immediately left and went to Het Waterliniemuseum. So today it was time to give it another try.

Take the train As a parking ticket costs 12 euro, they really want to push you to come by train. This because the museum is also an actually working train station. From Utrecht, you can go to platform 2 and take the train right to into the museum right next to the ticket scan. If you miss the train since it only goes once every hour, or half hour in summer. You can also walk from Utrecht Central and be there just as fast as the train. The first part of the museum is before the ticket scan, so you can go in there for free, this part already has an old station build in 1874, and you can go into Queen Juliana’s train from the 1950’s.

The old trains The main attraction is probably the olds trains that are parked there, some you can even walk in. The oldest steam locomotive here is form 1865, thats more than 150 years old! If you go outside, it will teach you more about the different jobs they're where, like the train chef or the railroad crossing guard. Outside is also a wooden waggon that was used to transport Jewish people to the camps. Inside you can listen to different stories from people wo surpived it or at least theyre story survived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Active Learning In the lab you can do experiments that will teach you how train work, test out different wheels, or how does the break work with air pressure? At the end, you can design your own train, and make the exam to see if you can get the high score. At the Vuurproef you can step into a simulation to see if you could control a steam train.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Almost a themepark In the Steel Monsters part you can go inside a rollercoster, this really makes a difference. it feels like this museum is not just a museum, but almost a theme park. Since it also has a playground and a Jumbo Exspress, with is a outdoor trainrails for young kids, its like a mega miniature train.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Too much to see I only had 3 hours in the museum and i missed out on ‘’The great discovery’’ where you go into the mine shafts and see a replica of the very first steam locomotive in the Netherlands from 1839. And even ride on it if you go on the right day. I went to ‘’Dream journeys’’ But I missed out on the theater show they do daily. Lastly, I missed out on the turntable they have, where you can look at even more trains.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Would I pay the price: Maybe, it's a bit expensive but there's a lot to do
Would I revisit it: Yes i only had 3 hours to walk around and i didnt yet see everything
Who do I recommend it to: Young families, train workers, train enthusiasts.
Interactive:         5 Educational:      5 Storytelling:       4 Price:                4 Memorable:       4
Total score: 4,4
