The National Geographic Society Deep-Sea Camera System: A Low-Cost Remote Video Survey Instrument to Advance Biodiversity Observation in the Deep Ocean

There is a growing need for marine biodiversity baseline and monitoring data to assess ocean ecosystem health, especially in the deep sea, where data are notoriously sparse. Baited cameras are a biological observing method especially useful in the deep ocean to estimate relative abundances of scavenging fishes and invertebrates. The National Geographic Society Exploration Technology Lab developed an autonomous benthic lander platform with a baited camera system to conduct stationary video surveys of deep-sea megafauna. The first-generation landers were capable of sampling to full ocean depth, however, the form factor, power requirements, and cost of the system limited deployment opportunities. Therefore, a miniaturized version (76 cm × 76 cm × 36 cm, 18 kg in air) was developed to provide a cost-effective method to observe ocean life to 6000 m depth. Here, we detail this next-generation deep-sea camera system, including the structural design, scientific payload, and the procedures for deployment. We provide an overview of NGS deep-sea camera system deployments over the past decade with a focus on the performance improvements of the next-generation system, which began field operations in 2017 and have performed 264 deployments. We present example imagery and discuss the strengths and limitations of the instrument in the context of existing complementary survey methods, and for use in down-stream data products. The key operational advantages of this new instrument are spatial flexibility and cost-efficiency. The instrument can be hand-deployed by a single operator from a small craft concurrent with other shipboard operations. The main limitation of the system is battery power, which allows for 6 h of continuous recording, and takes up to 8 h to recharge between deployments. Like many baited-camera methods, this instrument is specialized to measure the relative abundance of mobile megafauna that are attracted to bait, which results in a stochastic snapshot of the species at the deployment location and time. The small size and ease of deployment of this next-generation camera system allows for increased sample replication on expeditions, and presents a path forward to advance cost-effective biological observing and sustained monitoring in the deep ocean.

You may be amazed that according to reports, Akshay didn’t use glycerin for his emotional scenes. He said that he used to recall the event of his father’s demise and that made him really cry and shoot the emotional scenes! This emotional drama is based on a real-life personality G.R. Gopinath who founded Air Deccan, India’s first low-cost affordable airline for the common man. Akshay plays his character but is named Vir Mhatre here who is an Air Force pilot-turned-businessman who dreams of opening his own airline. This 2-hour and 35-minute drama is laden with emotions and has Akshay crying frequently. Mhatre had to face emotional, financial, and logistical hardships such as his opinion clash with his father, setbacks driven by corruption, bureaucracy, and betrayal; and worst of all, rivalry with a powerful aviation mogul (played by Paresh Rawal). I would say that having a superstar like Akshay, who is known for being a daredevil action hero, crying like a kid amidst personal, family-related, and career-related challenges can be unacceptable for many. People just don’t seem to enjoy watching him that way! Moreover, the aging Akshay, in certain scenes, has looked horrible in his character of Vir Mhatre. I bet the filmmakers wanted to show that he is toiling hard to set up his dream airline but showing him in an unkempt style with messy hair, a face full of graying beard, and shabby clothes is just not right. Even a well-groomed man can work hard and achieve his dreams. In the quest of making one's dream come true, you need not show the central character in such a shabby and unkempt look. Indeed, Akshay Kumar is one of the most handsome actors in Bollywood and was the heartthrob of every Indian actress once upon a time. But just look at how he has been depicted in this movie. People may despise the character he is playing just because of his awkward appearance. Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan in the romantic track “Saare Ki” from Sarfira https://youtu.be/ykuZWxUBy54?si=k5-9qdS9Ebw5HAFk The biggest drawback of Sarfira is that it is a carbon copy of the 2020 Tamil film “Soorarai Pottru” which stars South’s sensation Suriya. That Tamil film too was written and directed by Sudha Kongara. Even the casting was the same with Paresh Rawal as the villain who played the lead character’s rival businessman. The only difference between Soorarai Pottru and Sarfira is in place of Suriya it's Akshay Kumar. And disappointingly, Akshay in this Bollywood remake just doesn’t seem to match the vibe and hype of Suriya. I don’t know why, but maybe because Akshay has become too old to match the chemistry with his co-star Radhika Madan, or maybe because of his weird unkempt look in the movie, or even maybe because he has been made to cry like a kid which just doesn’t suit his personality. I believe Sudha Kongara has made a big mistake by remaking Soorarai Pottru as Sarfira in Bollywood. It's because many people had already watched that Suriya-starring Tamil drama and this Bollywood remake has nothing new for them. Shot by shot it is an exact copy of that film. Also, the Hindi-dubbed version of Soorarai Pottru is already available on Netflix. People who don’t understand Tamil can very well watch the Hindi version of Soorarai Pottru. Then why waste your time, energy, and money to watch that same movie in theaters that has been remade by Bollywood? Gopinath’s memoir “Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey”, it won’t work out at the Box office. Unfortunately, the film also suffered because nothing much had been done to promote it before its release. This exciting flight for the common man may have succeeded in gaining altitude, but it simply crash lands! Even if the story of Sarfira is appealing and inspiring, it won’t influence you. You may feel lost upon knowing the real story. The fact is, India’s low-cost airline, Air Deccan had shut down long back. So what if it was a flourishing airline business once? Where is it now? People get inspiration from the things that leave their mark but sadly, Air Deccan didn’t. Just as that business didn’t succeed, similarly, this emotionally inspiring drama wouldn’t. The bad news is that the aging Akshay tested COVID-19 positive after this film's release. This is the third time he has been detected with COVID-19. Birthday Greetings to yesteryear Hindi film actress Jabeen Jalil, who turned 83 years today. Jabeen Jalil was a popular actress of hindi cinema of the 50s and 60s. Although She acted in merely 23 Hindi and 4 Punjabi films in her almost 20 year career, She made millions fans of her beauty and wonderful acting. Born in Delhi, Jabeen had her education in Mumbai as her family shifted to Mumbai when Jabeen was young. Jabeen made her film debut with Guzaara(1954)where her hero was Karan Dewan.Her second film was Lutera (1955) where her hero was Nasir Khan. She however got true recognition with her third film, New Delhi (1956) where she played the role of Kishore Kumar's sister Nikki. She got benefitted by the success of New Delhi. In the late 1950s, many films starring her released, including Char Minar, Fashion, Jeevan Sathi, Hathkadi, Panchayat, Raagini, Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane and Raat ke Raahi. In the 60s, Jabeen acted in films like Batwara, Khiladi, Sachche Moti, Taj Mahal and Raju. The Batwara song “Yeh Raat Yeh Fizaayen Phir Aayen Na Aayen” picturised on her and Jawahar Kaul is popular to this day. She also got the National Award for the 1962 Punjabi film Chaudhary Karnail Singh in which her hero was Prem Chopra. Jabeen acted in three other Punjabi movies Kadi Dhoop Kadi Chhaon, Geet Baharaan De and Aye Dharti Punjab Di. Many songs picturised on her were extremely popular including ‘Tum Aur Hum’ (Fashion), ‘Madbhari Yeh Pyaar Ki Palken’ (Fashion), ‘Ta Thaiyya Karte Aana’ (Panchayat), ‘Piya mai hoon patang tu dor’ (Raagini), ‘Qaid mein Hai Bulbul Sayyad Muskuraye’ (Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane), ‘Door Kahin Tu Chal’ (Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane), ‘Aa Bhi Ja Bewafa’ (Raat Ke Rahi), ‘Tu Kya Samjhe Tu Kya Jaane’ (Raat Ke Rahi) and ‘Ek Nazar Ek Ada’ (Raat Ke Rahi). Jabeen quit films in 1968 after wrapping up her career with the film Sweetheart starring Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. Jabeen got married in the year 1968. Her Husband Ashok Kak was of Kashmiri Origin and hailed from Jodhpur. He was the President of the Kodak Company and was the youngest CEO of that time. After moving away from films Jabeen was active in social work also. Jabeen and her family stayed in America for some time. The family moved back to Mumbai in 1998. Today she lives with her husband, son and elderly mother-in-law in her flat in South Bombay, and divides her time between playing the devoted wife and the ideal mother.
