AI model transforms sounds into realistic street-view images, bridging sensory perception

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a generative AI model that transforms audio recordings into highly accurate street-view images, demonstrating the system's ability to replicate the human connection between sound and visual perception.
Using soundscape data from urban and rural areas worldwide, the AI was trained on pairs of 10-second audio clips and corresponding images.
Tests revealed the AI-generated images closely matched real-world scenes, including proportions of greenery, sky, and buildings, with 80% of human participants correctly linking audio samples to generated images. The system also captured architectural styles, object distances, and lighting conditions, inferred from audio cues like traffic noise or insect chirping.
The research highlights AI's potential to extend sensory perception, offering insights into how multisensory factors shape human experiences of places. It also showcases AI's ability to enrich geospatial studies, including capturing the unique characteristics of cities.

it's so fascinating to read someone's work when they write like they're writing a film. by which i don't mean that the narrative reads like a script, but that their descriptions and transitions and imagery essentially function as storyboards. you can easily imagine where shots would be divided up, and who/where a camera would cut to at a certain moment. the way the work has its greatest impact is when you translate the words to film atmosphere and action in your head. it's startling how visually/viscerally someone can write when they've settled into that style and i wish i could write like that
#at the present i'm talking about yuyi as i'm now reading the 九龍城寨 novels and action is SO CLEARLY his strong suit#and the way he uses metaphors and starts new paragraphs and adds descriptions really lends itself to that#but another artist i can think of who does this is gerard way#mcr's lyrics also do this although it's helped by the medium of music having a soundscape to tell a story with too#but the songs are grand and sweeping and the lyrics hit you like a brick and the painting through words is just so good#incidentally. 城寨 is prominently known for its manhua adaptation and gerard was a comic book artist#and that just makes the works make sense for them to be turned into visual mediums#anyways. random analysis of the day i don't know#writing#ashton originals

Meet the crew!
Look what the tide washed in!
Noah (they/them) is the writer of All At Sea and the voice of February. They're currently in the process of completing their MA in English Literature, which focuses on the importance of the found family trope in queer, POC-led narratives. When they're not drowning in books or literary analysis, you can find them staring blearily at a blank Word Doc, or drowning in all the different audio dramas they still need to listen to.
Scotchy @secondhand-coelacanth (any pronouns) is a producer of All At Sea and the voice of Sturgeon. They found their passion for podcasting through working on The Hermit Archives as an editor and minor character, and can't wait to bring more sounds and noises right to your eardrums. When he isn't splicing voice lines for enrichment, or surviving the horrors of academia, Scotchy can be found making music, crocheting, or fishing around for a new hobby to try out.
Louis Wolf @louis-dc (he/they) is a producer of All At Sea, he is a disabled artist/actor based in Colorado. Doing theatre in high school helped to reveal his passion for storytelling, specifically with acting and directing. This has fed in well to a love of dnd. When not playing ttrpgs with friends, Louis can be found playing video games, yelling about superheroes, or watching bird documentaries with their cat. Louis is the assistant producer of Soul Operator, you can hear them as Alex in episode eight of The Grotto and Athena in the upcoming audio drama Forged Bonds. He is creator of upcoming talking head podcast Media Microscope.
Rowan Odom @twinstrangersp (they/them) Rowan, sound designer of All At Sea, is a non-binary creator whose passion lies in creating stories in a post-Covid world, specifically those filled with queerness, love, and horror. They also make time for D&D and random crafts in their spare time! They are one of the Strangers of Twin Strangers Productions and the creator of the studio’s first AD, Syntax. They are also the main editor in the upcoming Rites of Descendancy and can be heard as a voice in The Moon Crown as Aria, and Syntax as Elora.

archive 81 for the ask meme?
Podcast I feel sooooooo normal about.
The medium is integral to the narrative. I've really only seen this executed so well in comics, but A81 also ties it in thematically as well which is very neat.
Soundscaped body horror. But also, body horror of a sympathetic character serving as an effective parallel to disability, as well as being an actual disability. He ultimately grows to feel netural about his "new flesh", without losing the frustration that it happened, it was done to him against his will, or that it changes the way people see and interact with him. Not all of the ways its changed him are for the worse, but it makes his life harder, yet at the end of the day it's still just his body.
I adore that Season 2 considers kindness a strength, but also that Season 3 makes it clear that violence is just as useful an option.
But the story itself builds its surprise in kindness. A horror story using kindness for its narrative twists! It seems obvious written out like that but I'd never encountered this before and got such a kick out of it.
Also, ever notice how many characters get what they want in the end? Either in a good way or an awful one?
It taught me a lot about what I like in a story. I also inadvertently expanded my ability to analyse media because of it.
Clara is such a fascinating character to me. It's arguably implied that her brother started to become "weird" (the way Dan, Rat, Suit, the Rep, Kara, etc are) and got LMG's help to reverse it and that's why she's in their debt. And this is part of the reason Dan makes her so uneasy at first: he's not a person so much as a weird, obsessive, corrupting entity, who she's led to believe chose this. And then he stands up for himself she decides she needs change if she's going to survive. And she does! And they start worrying about each other. And by the time she sees Suit again, it doesn't matter that's Suit's weird: she's a person Clara decides she can trust. Clara's an abrasive character who's fear makes her vicious and is, by extension, constantly working to be better under terrifying circumstances.
^ This was arguably my first successful in-depth character analysis maybe ever. Clara is still very compelling to me, possibly in-part because of it.
Also the S2 straight-bait lmao. Gosh it was a relief they didn't shoehorn in a romance.
I quite like the genre changes between seasons. Feels like the creators are having fun with it. Creating what they want to.
Even the character change going into S3. Chris and Nicholas are really compelling right off the bat.
And Static Man & Nicholas' weird friendship. Do you have to be a good person to be a good friend? Are you bound by circumstance or choice? Dedicating so much of your life to someone you're still a stranger to in so many ways, but closer to than anyone else. They're fascinating.
How complicated and obsurd the rituals are. Also, did you notice in S1 that Jesse is often running weird and specific shit to particular apartments? What's the bet those are ritual components.
Following in from that: great relisten value. All the little details?

Special Interests (autism)
So, I'm autistic, and after years, I've finally put to words that my main special interest revolves around storytelling. I am aware of how that can be a very broad category, but I give it that label purposefully because I have so many other things that I hyperfixate/think about 24/7 that can fall under the category of storytelling--acting, script analysis, musical theater, writing, worldbuilding, music composition, and just stories in general.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I was relistening to The Magnus Archives--great worldbuilding, character development/arcs, incredibly written, voice-acted, and soundscaped, and dozens of other aspects I love paying attention to--and I am now bouncing off the walls because my mortal form cannot contain the joy and energy I feel when listening to the BTS of bringing TMA to life.

“From here on out, you′re mine, all mine” possissive much, fuck off >:) also thats what he greets him with? thats....not...no. he’s been through so much, he fought in a war he never wanted to go to for ten years, he used a wooden horse to finially end the war because he just needed to go back home, he had to kill a child to choose his family, they were safe on their way home when his best friend got killed, then they almost made it home, but the bag was opened, most of his crew died, his men got turned into pigs and he got another round of the gods playing games with him (see: hermes telling Ody not to refuse circe in homers odyssey when she wants to take him to bed, so he doesnt, he cant refuse the demands of gods), once they finially leave their island with his men back as humans, they have to go through the underworld where EVERY loss he had (which are more than he knew) comes back to haunt him, he learns his family is in danger, theres blood in his palace, all his mercy is harming him, so he embraces the thing he never wanted to be - a monster - and when the sirens come, he kills them, but he has to go further than that, the only way to get home is to sacrifice six of his men, so he does, six more men to haunt his dreams, if thats the price he has to pay he will, but his men turn on him, his trusted brother in law, not only opened the windbag, now he also starts a mutiny, the men he tried to bring home so badly betray him, stab him, bind him to a statue and he can do nothing but watch as they kill the cattle, his doom is sealed, zeus shows up and tells him to either choose himself, or his crew, hes a broken man, how much more has he to go through before he can go home? but he has to home to his family, so he chooses, his last decision he has to make, and he sinks into the ocean, thinking maybe, he can finally close his eyes, he needs to go home but he is so tired of suffering he would welcome an end of it...but then he wakes up, on this peaceful island, with a woman next to him, who suddenly puts claim on him, she wants him IN HER BED??? He needs to go home. he’s alive, he survived zeus and poseidon and aelus and circe and the underoworld and the war and-...he became the monster, he knows what to do, just another face in his nightmares to get home

“No one can come or go, my island stays unknown” this, might very well be the worst moment for Ody so far, after EVERYTHING he’s been through. He choose his crew to die, it was supposed to be the last decision, it was supposed to be the climatic event before the end, all the expectations and tensions that rose in him getting set so high but instead..... nothing happens, he gets stuck in “paradise”, no monsters to fight,its not violent, theres no external threads to his life, things should be good, and happy and peaceful. its anti-climatic, and stifling because he has no way to release all this tension, its just stagnation, and all this tension getting internalized, it might very well be worse than having something you can fight against, but Calypso is a goddess, he cant harm her, her spell keeps him stuck on the island, he is powerless. His goal, his reason, his hope impossibly out of reach, all in the hand of this goddess, who doesn’t take no as an answer
“no, no” i love how Jorge wrote another “suffering” thing again, where the last syllable of one speaker gets picked up by the other “unknown” “no” becoming “Unknowno,no” its SO GOOD, but also the implications???? the last time we had this a siren wanted to seduce him and lure him into the water, now its a goddess wanting to lure him into loving and staying with her, again, he tries to find excuses and fend her off, his argumentation is a lot weaker than with the sirens though, he doesnt have a way out, all he can do is refuse and pray she listens, also CALYPSO BITCH THERES NO CLEARER WAY HE COULDVE SAID “NO”; LEAVE HIM BE; HE SAID NO FUCKING ACCEPT THAT HE DOES NOT CONSENT

“There’s something wrong here”, how many times do you think he almost gave in? how many times do you think she was lured in by her spell only to shake the spell off again because he kept feeling that something was wrong, never really falling under her spell, never staying under it for long, because its wrong, this isnt where he needs to be, he needs to get home because his family is waiting at home, theyre in danger.
“I won’t be drawn to love in paradise, not ′til the end of time, there is no way” she just has nothing on penelope. and he will never be interested in calypso as seductive as she tries to be, circe failed, calyspo fails even worse (i love these vocal performances man, theyre SO GOOD)
“You′re mine, all mine” Annnnnd she doesnt take no as answer again, shes so possessive I HATE it, how she drowns out Odys “theres no way - youre mine, all mine” she drowns out and swallows up his voice, ignores him, his voice goes unheard...
and we go back to the clock ticking of the time dive of athena
“Seven years, she’s kept you trapped, out of your control, time can take a heavy toll” SEVEN. YEARS. sagnation for SEVEN YEARS. THIS IS TERRIBlE, Athena sounds so sad...and concerned, from what she’s seen, but just...imagine that, he fought in troy for 10 years, now odys been stuck on this island for almost just as long, and before that he had EVERYTHING ELSE happen to him, feeling powerless against outside forces for YEARS, it weights down in him, all he can do is internalize it, because there is no monster he can fight, but himself. and...we can hear the danger motif in the choir.....because...he’s become a danger to himself....
the soundscape shifts again, we go back into a memory, its raining and windy, at the beach
“Odysseus?”, she geninuely sounds concerened, what could make her concerned i wonder....
“All I hear are screams”,...he...he’s broken, a callback to the underworld, he sounds defeated, hopeless, dissociative
“Ody”...Ody......you dare call him ody? you may have known each other for seven years but you DID NOT treat him right, you have no RIGHT to call him that, the last person who called him Ody was Eurylochus before he signed their doom.

Polites, all his opens, and promises, and he cant live up to it, he tried, he tries so HARD to greet the world with open arms, but he cant, but ruthlessness did not help him either, he misses polites, he was the last person he had at sea who TRULY cared for him, hes having a flashback, PTSD so badly as he is standing at the edge of the cliff, i can just see him falling to his knees, crying and then...

How much longer till we all fall down?”, he hears eurys warning, how much longer till his liuck runs out? his luck has run out, for years now, and hes still stuck, everything has turned bad, the show went south, they all fell down and yet.....
“Waiting..waaiting” his mom....said shed stay inside his heart, he took too long, its been twenty years since he left home, how many other people are waiting for him while is stuck on the island? all these voices are just...inside his head all the time and cant shake them off.
“ooohooooh...ohhh” THE VOCAL PERFORMANCE JORGE- JORGE-... hes just screaming, trying to drown out the voices in his head as he’s breaking down....he wants to let go, he cant let go, he needs to get back home, his family is in danger, theres no one who could help him, the only one, who might have been able to do something, his ally, left him ten years ago, when he defied her, but she is a goddess, if she has any mercy left...maybe...jsut maybe...she could help him...but she wouldnt really listen to him would she? how often has he prayed to her in those years? or has he refused to call out for her in fear of facing more rejection? but...he cant do this any longer, this is ...the very last thing he can do....and so he calls out for her.
“Athena!”, praying that what has been broken can be amended. at least with her.
“He needs my help” and his cry gets heard......athena voice breaks, when she sees how far her friend has fallen.
.....and she decides to do something about it

Something that I think we don't talk about enough is Beetlejuice and all the cartoonish sound effects that follow him.
This is rambly, but I'm making this surface-level analysis/speculation/headcanon everyone else's problem. >:3c
Ignoring the cartoon (since that's expected in the soundscape of an animated show aimed at younger audiences), Beetlejuice himself is accompanied by over-the-top sound effects in the film and musical that just aren't really present for other characters (at least not in the same way they are for him). While it's obviously to make his scenes funnier, I love the idea of them being an extension of his magic. Either he finds it funny for his actions to be accompanied by goofy sounds and times them himself for comedic effect, or they're a totally subconscious thing/he doesn't even need to think about doing it.
Especially in the context of moviejuice being more malicious than his counterparts, it's an unsettling dichotomy of this centuries-old conartist/manipulator being accompanied by goofy noises. And, if he chooses to actively magic these sounds into exiestence when he's interacting with the people he's tormenting, it implies that he enjoys the victims' suffering and finds it funny enough to go the extra mile to make it humiliating. They do seem to be tied more to when his magic is being used rather than happening in response to what he's physically doing.
I feel like the idea of intentional sound effects is true of musicaljuice, too. Yeah, he's meant to be more sympathetic while still being manipulative and selfish, so I feel like he does it to make himself goofier since he's so painfully lonely and lacks social skills (literally being invisible will do that). It could also be because of some anxiety, but I don't want to project too hard. I'd even go so far as to say that he thinks the sound effects make him less-intimidating.
There's some evidence to suggest that the sound effects are intentionally done since musicaljuice breaks the fourth wall in multiple instances across slight variations of the show (DC, Broadway, tour). Whether it's putting on a show to intentionally mislead the Maitlands/Deetzs (and by extension the audience), or trying to come off as funny in the hopes that it'll make up for his more obvious flaws, it's anyone's guess. Personally, with how desperate he is for friends and for someone to break his curse (we know he's not above manipulating people), I'm more inclined to believe it's a little bit of both.
That said, I also like the idea of them being a result of how Beetlejuice (musicaljuice specifically) interacts with the material world. He's an anomally (half-ghost-half-demon) at best and an abomination at worst. There's a part of me that wonders if the physical world outside of the Netherworld cannot handle his very existence without an assortment of "glitches" happening as a result of his mere presence (like the stretching sound that happens when he phases through walls and tables for example).
And, to really stick to my wishy washy thoughts on the whole thing, the toony sound effects are a bit of both. A reminder that the world of the living can't really handle his existence, but he's embraced it and made it his own. It's now a part of his shtick. It defines him as different, but he owns it and has as much fun with it as he can, or manipulates the ability when he sees fit.
And you know I will be abusing the toony sound effects thing in anything I end up writing.

(I'm just getting home from work and able to access the internet again, so sorry this is so late, but...)
Dracula Daily/Re: Dracula (which is the same thing but podcast and lovingly soundscaped and please go listen if you aren't already) is getting into some of my favorite parts now, and I know most of this analysis has been done to death, but there was one thing I wanted to point out.
Last year when Dracula Daily blew up big time, there were a lot of jokes and memes about Quincey Morris' first reaction to the bat being to shoot it. But I think a lot of people forgot about this bit from today's entry:
I have not seen anything pulled down so quick since I was on the Pampas and had a mare that I was fond of go to grass all in a night. One of those big bats that they call vampires had got at her in the night, and what with his gorge and the vein left open, there wasn't enough blood in her to let her stand up, and I had to put a bullet through her as she lay.
(Emphasis mine.)
Quincey is the only one apart from Van Helsing who's seen something like this happen before, even if he assumes it's just a bat and not something worse (and even if he doesn't realize yet, at this point in the story, that that's what's happening to Lucy). He's one of the faster ones to put two and two together. And, crucially, he's already had to kill one helpless thing he loved because of what a vampire (bat) did. The last thing he's going to want is to lose Lucy to such a thing.
Of course he's going to shoot a bat when he sees it. It's a simple, straightforward solution to the problem - shoot the creature, stop it from killing. The other thing to think about is that he's a Texan, most likely a cowman - and if he has the finances to come to England like he has, most likely he (or his family) owns a cattle ranch rather than him just being a hand on one. He's probably familiar with animal attacks on cattle, and knows to watch out for animals attacking humans. At the time, it was commonly assumed that once an animal gets a taste for human flesh/blood, it starts to prefer them. And when that happens, the animal must be killed; there's no going back, whether it was a wild animal or a previously domesticated one.
On another note, if you are interested in "characters who find out the supernatural exists and immediately beat the shit out of it for hurting someone they care about", may I recommend subscribing to the Old Gods of Appalachia Patreon for the low price of $10 a month (even if you just subscribe for one month to at least listen to all seventeen episodes of Build Mama a Coffin) and getting acquainted with one Indiana Boggs?

My personal sound and creative direction analysis of Girls Revolution Project as of November 2024!

I feel like the sound of GRP is a very forward-thinking and refreshing J-pop style, with an emphasis on idol and VOCALOID-inspired sounds. This is evident in their producer lineup which features primarily VOCALOID producers and idol song producers; especially, they feature producers who may not be highlighted as often in Kamitsubaki’s precedent.
A lot of GRP songs focus on the treble aspect of the vocal and instrumental range. With the focus on treble sounds, it creates a soundscape of clarity, lightness; sometimes shimmering, sometimes floating – this focus is part of what makes it have a “refreshing” feeling.
Song structure a lot of the time feels very VOCALOID-inspired as the forefront of inspiration. By this, I mean most of the songs have a sort of 2020s VOCALOID-esque feel and length – short, effective, catchy, stylish. This I feel is one of the core tenants of GRP’s style, and shows the way they diverge from Kamitsubaki precedent in some ways. There's also flavors from the diversity of different idol styles and popular J-pop styles, infusing the VOCALOID song structure with different aspects you wouldn't normally otherwise hear in VOCALOID trends. Overall it's aimed towards a slightly different audience than what Kamitsubaki fans may be used to. It's possible to compare the philosophy behind the sound to Asu and Aru, but the sound itself of course is different.
The songs that I'd say trend to Kamitsubaki’s style precedent more, especially in terms of structure and sound layering, are Fake Night Cinderella, Funeral Flower, and Return to this World. In my personal opinion, these are the “strongest” songs in terms of production. All of these are the debut songs for Sinseiki, Tsumitobatsu, and the entire group respectively. I’d say it's the choice to use this more style to show that a song is more important, and to link them to their core identity in Kamitsubaki. The other songs trend towards GRP’s new signature style based on 2020s VOCALOID song structure.
While the production trends towards VOCALOID, the vocal style is a blend of idol styles and Kamitsubaki’s signature vocal direction. Compared to the rest of Kamitsubaki, GRP has clearly younger voices – likely ranging around 17-22 years old. On top of this, they all have very unique singing styles. It's truly a treat to hear their uniqueness and skillfulness – the Kamitsubaki vocal signature – with the age range of their voices, when others in the same age range wouldn't quite sound like them in terms of technique. In solo songs and covers, their voices have clear unique quirks to them. In group songs, their complementary nature comes out more, adhering to a more idol-style direction.
The music composition and production complements and highlights this youthful, fresh, and unique aspect of their voices and appeal, while also showing off their skill. It really gives you the impression they are next-generation artists – the latest sounds from the J-music soundscape, and the youthful yet skillful unique voices – this is GRP.
Overall, GRP is an expansion of Kamitsubaki’s soundscape to a new audience and style, while still adhering to what makes Kamitsubaki unique – especially in the vocal style and details in production direction.

ttpd is sooo fascinating on an artistic level because on the one hand we have this somewhat stagnant production style that does not really elevate the songs or themes and rehashes the soundscapes of past album releases, and on the other hand the lyricism in part feels derivative of artists who might not exist without Taylor paving their way through her confessional songwriting. there is a sense of Being Stuck on this record that would lend itself well to thorough analysis, but instead every other negative ttpd review feels like a takedown of Taylor Swift The Person.
#i think one thing most reviewers agree on is the production feeling underwhelming#though this - as well as this post in general - is partially a subjective assessment#but yea. ttpd fascinating little thing.#and the artists that i feel it is derivative of are phoebe and ethel cain who both have gotten taylor comparisons#and lana and florence although they Did Their Thing first#idk man fucks me up that nobody talks about this in a way that is genuinely intrigued#fantano review made me so annoyed at some point it's just not music criticism anymore

MY KPOP PREDICTIONS (halfway based on astrology halfway based on my own personal analysis)
reminder this is mainly just my thoughts based on my own research and some studying and is NOT exact fact unless proven to be
later down the road the formation for global groups and foreign members are going to uptick and global training/audition headquarters could happen (personal idea is it'll be most prevalent in the late spring/summer time) . a big guess my moot had is that if the gg katseye's debut is well received, does good numbers, and is successful then the push will go further for diverse/global groups
a company might delve into debuting a "dance group" or a group centered around performance and choreos rather than self made music/vocals OR dance videos to promote groups instead of predebut song releases might happen more often OR young choreographers might start debuting as group members rather than as just choreographers
company hierarchy is going to become VERY obvious and prevalent
the min heejin situation won't be the only legal thing to happen most likely,, also claims of lying, fraud, manipulation and unfair power imbalances might happen more frequently..also business/brand collabs might be torn..companies/idols losing pr, sponsorships and brand deals/ambassadorships
despite the clash or downfall of collaborations there might be more company collabs between each other OR some form of a company merge, or a new company branch from the big 3 might form
everyone and their moms has said this but I agree as well idols past actions and dating histories will be exposed and a layer of privacy for idols might be peeled back..COMPANIES might also get exposed for negligence and harm/mistreatment of idols (hence the fourth prediction)
social media might bite some idols/groups in the ass...im not sure how yet but maybe something revolving social media might accidentally cause negative situations for multiple people under the industry like a screenshot of them flirting with someone or an old post taken out of context
the kpop soundscape might be weird for a moment..like there'll be a random transitional stage at some point and the overall sound might become very random and indescribable before being fully evolved leading to an awkward moment in the industry or in multiple fandoms at least LOLL
