Stardust’s plans had not gone…well, they had not gone according to plan.

Damn mercenaries.

Detaching from station.

They heard the ship announce, the voice muffled through the crate in which they’d been crammed. Their legs and arms ached from being bent in one position for so long.

Damn that cosmic bounty hunter too!

The ship jostled a little when it decoupled from the station, engines revving a little boost as they pushed away, no doubt heading back toward the border with Solar Court and the drop off with their cousin.

Cosmic clapped his hands as if cleaning them, and they could practically hear the smug smile on his face when he announced, “We are getting back on course before pirates or mercenaries or whoever else you’ve talked to can catch up.”

The control panel beeped as he set some new command before footfalls finally neared Stardust’s dark prison.

For long seconds, he didn’t say anything. Was he just standing there? Or had he snuck away?

Panic rushed through their chest, making their arms spasm uselessly. They weren’t sure they could keep calm much longer. They’d been reassuring themself that he would pop the lid when he was done. This had been fair, they supposed, considering how they’d left him tied to a chair for a day. But they couldn’t stay inside the box much longer. It was too tight. They needed to move. They needed to breathe!

“Okay,” Cosmic said and they actually held their breath with hope. “I’m going to open the box. If you kick me, I’m going to leave you in there for a day. Deal?”

It wasn’t a hard decision.

Knock. Knock.

They might kick him anyway, but at least right now they meant it when they promised.

The latch rattled when he flipped it, popping the lid and slowly pushing it back. Did he really think they’d spring at him like a snake?

They sat up, squinting even against the low lighting of the ship’s deck.

“Aw, look at you,” the bounty hunter cooed with false sympathy. “It’s almost like things went exactly the way I said they would…”

Stardust rolled their eyes, slowly lifting their bound arms, muscles and joints aching.

“Come on, stand up.” He helped them, his hands catching them under their arms and lifting. “I see you got some new handcuffs, very stylish. No, I think I’ll leave those on you this time. But we’ll get rid of the gag… I can’t wait to hear you talk your way out of this.”

They glared daggers at him when he didn’t remove the cuffs and instead found the edge of the tape on their face, ripping it free.

Pain shot through their mouth, jolting down their chin.

His amusement was gone, like the pain had been his too. “Oh shit, your lip. Hang on.”

Stardust stood in the crate, wrists bound, and busted lip gushing down their chin. Blood dripped on the front of their shirt and thudded like thick raindrops on the box. They lifted their bound hands to catch the drops, like they needed to contain the mess, but Cosmic was back, gently pushing their hands back down to let the blood fall.

He dabbed their chin with a warm cloth, holding it to their bottom lip. “You’re really not doing yourself any favors out here, Stardust… At this rate you’re going to end up with a scar. Though, I’m sure they can get rid of that back in the prime.”

They could. Scars were erasable. They wouldn’t even have to go to a specialist. Every medical room was outfitted with a kit for repairing skin. They didn’t even stock bandages or gauze in the prime, because no one had a cut long enough to need one. Stardust had barely had a bruise before leaving home, not for lack of earning them, but because they were always treated before they could heal.

Cosmic pulled the cloth away, getting a look at their lip and tsked. He dabbed again, cleaning before coming at the cut with an antibacterial glue. It stung but soon that turned into a numbing that spread over their whole lower lip. “Hu-doud-meh?” Stardust tried to ask, rolling their eyes at the garbled mess of words that struggled to form around what felt like a lip four times its size.

The bounty hunter smirked. “How did I find you?”

Stardust nodded. They were tired and sore. Space outside the prime hurt. They hadn’t expected that. Honestly, they thought they knew pain before. They’d had a habit of getting into duels in their second and third decade. Once, in a fight for Contessa’s honor, Stardust had taken a canon shot to the leg. They’d been surprised when the antiques actually fired and then infinitely more so when they didn’t move out of the damn way of the ball hurling through the air at them.

Cosmic cleaned up their face. “You remember when I was mending your bumps and scrapes last time?”

Stardust nodded, trying not to let their thoughts stray when he wiped up the blood from their jaw and down their neck. If they stood very still, would he sponge bath them right there on the deck of his ship?

“I put nanite trackers in you when I was patching you up. They’re floating around your bloodstream. They’ll decay and stop transmitting in a couple weeks but, until then, you’re mine, Stardust.”

They stared at him. He was joking.

He stared right back, warm cloth still at their throat. “I’m not going to lose you.”

Heat rushed their face. Trackers? He’d put trackers in them? They wanted to be outraged, they were! They definitely were! But… the way he was looking at them and the earnest conviction in his voice.

The bounty hunter smiled, that twist of his lips full of smug delight. “And I’m not going to make the mistake of letting you wander around freely either.” He took a step back and held out the bloody cloth.

Stardust snatched it from him, rubbing their hands clean. “You said you’d get me home. You promised,” they garbled, mouth still cottony.

“Home?” he squinted like he wasn’t sure he remembered the wording exactly. “I did… Yeah, I did promise to get you home. But I thought—”

“It doesn’t matter what you thought, you said—”

“It kind of does matter what I thought,” he cut in. “Are you really trying to invoke my sense of honor to help you right now?”

Stardust opened their mouth to say yes, but caught the word because they were scared it would work and he would die for it. They’d been relieved when they heard him on the mercenary ship, not because he was their rescue, but because it meant they hadn’t gotten him killed by stealing his ship and leaving him tasered onboard.

The intercom bleeped once before the voice of the ship chimed, Incoming call. L-Class Yacht.

Stardust’s heart lurched just like it had every time that call came during the last day. They shook their head. “Don’t do it…”

“Don’t answer?” Cosmic laughed. “Yeah, right. Back in the box, Stardust.”

They tried to get out of the box but he caught their shoulder, too easily pushing them down. They grabbed at him with their bound hands, struggling but they were already down in the metal crate again. “Wait! Don’t tell them where we are. Don’t tell them you’ve seen it!” He shushed them like this wasn’t a big deal and he had it handled, palming the back of their head to keep them from hitting it before closing the lid.

“Fuck!” Stardust shouted, kicking at the inside of the box.

Incoming call— the ship began but he cut it off.

“Yeah. Answer call.”

Static crackled. Stardust held their breath to hear. Which one was calling? They’d been too scared to find out. Too scared to give anything away if they talked to one of their cousins. They weren’t even sure which one they were hoping it would be, but the instant they heard his voice—they knew they had been praying it wouldn’t be Genesis.

Red

It was a pretty good sketch, she had to admit. Even with the loss of her normal pencils, she had managed to turn the singular red colored pencil she had scrounged up into a beautiful landscape. Most everything here on Mars was red anyways, so it hadn’t looked too off, although a few extra colors would have been nice. When she got back to base, she would need to repack her travel kit. 

Speaking of base, it was time to get going. She had left early that morning to get to the solar panels before the sun fully rose. A few of them had been giving some weird readings, and she had been sent to fix it. After brushing the brick-red dust off the surface, she had stayed for a few hours to ensure that they were now functioning optimally. With the last readout uploaded to her suit, it was time for her to go home. 

Each step puffed up clouds of red dirt behind her, each of them billowing away in the light wind blowing across the surface. She tucked the sketch into a pocket as she walked, eager to get home. It could go on the fridge. Rory would like it.

The ground crumbled beneath her feet, sending her careening down the slope. She hit the bottom with a thud, her route down clearly marked by a darker red streak where she had slid. Her oxygen tank was still attached, thankfully, and her suit appeared intact. She ran her hands over her body, checking for any damages she hadn’t initially noticed. Her hand came away red. Huh. That was new. Twisting as much as possible, she could just see the liquid dripping down to the ground, forming a slow puddle. As the adrenaline of the fall faded, her side hurt. A lot. 

She activated the comm unit in her helmet, hoping to reach the base for a pickup. Silence was her only reply. Either the hole she was in was blocking short range communications, or she had damaged her comm unit in the fall. She continued to try, refusing to give up yet, when a beeping interrupted her. A quick glance at her HUD showed the problem. Her injury had breached her suit. Oxygen was leaking into the surrounding atmosphere, and it would not take long before she was out.

“Hey Al, you’re still over by Mars, right?”

“John, you know exactly where I am right now. What do you need?”

“I’m getting a weird signal from the surface. It could very well be nothing, but since you’re in the area anyways…”

“You want me to go over there and check it out.” Alan finished, already changing direction. “I’m on it. Send me the coordinates, and I’ll be there ASAP. But if this is a false alarm, you owe me dinner.”

“Understood, Thunderbird Three. Transmitting the coordinates now.”

Her oxygen levels were long past where she would normally allow them to fall, deep into the red portion of the gauge. She had tried to pull herself out of the hole, but there were no handholds. The pain in her side had flared every time she moved, so now she had taken to sitting propped against the wall, trying to conserve oxygen as much as possible. 

She occupied herself by staring at the stars, watching the sun sink past the horizon and its more distant cousins appear one by one. One caught her eye, initially looking like a shooting star, but continuing in a blazing red trail. She idly wondered what it could be, too weak from blood loss and lack of oxygen to care much. 

She tracked it across the sky until it came to a stop right next to her hole, the shiny red rocket glowing in the faint light. Her eyes slipped closed as something seemed to descend from the side of the ship.

When she opened them again, there was a red gloved hand reaching for her. It took a monumental effort to take it, but as soon as she did, it lifted her confidently into the air. She pressed her helmet into the red of his baldric, and felt safe.
