Spending some pool time at Solaire Resort and Casino. I must say, this hotel is gorgeous. The room interiors are beautiful and has nice views of the bay. The furnishings are nice, and has a luxe feel.
The pool area is nice too with different places to lounge, and if you’re a high roller, why not rent one of the cabanas? Only word of caution, be sure you have the proper material for swimwear. Funny because I was wearing swim shorts I got from Hollister but before I could jump in, I was stopped by the life guard because he had to feel the material of my shorts. Apparently, the material should be 100% Polyester well mine was a blend of cotton, nylon and polyester and they couldn't allow that because these material tends to clog the pool filter. Talk about major bummer right? I was about to argue that I saw a guy wearing briefs under his shorts (because the band can be seen), I mean he's still wearing something cotton, just inside the shorts. But I was pissed and just took more snaps of myself. Good thing the sun was up and the weather was perfect for a relaxing day at the pool.
To compensate, I just went to the spa and had a nice dip in the Jacuzzi for some R&R.
So guys next time, not to self, make sure you only wear 100% polyester when swimming in pools, OK? They don't care if its Chanel or LV, it should be 100% polyester.

Elegant Korean Grill Dining at Kiwa in Solaire Resort & Casino
With the blossoming of the Korean community in the Philippines, many Korean establishments have started opening all around the neighborhood, most noticeably, Korean barbecue restaurants. These are mostly no-frills hole-in-the-wall family restaurants which bring the flavors of Korea to those craving for this type of cuisine. But for those looking for a more upscale and refined Korean grill dining experience, there is a new place where you can bring your family or date without having to leave smelling of smoke and barbecue.
The recently-opened KIWA Korean Grill Dining at Solaire Resort and Casino promises to deliver an exquisite and authentic Korean dining experience that is unmatched in this side of Southeast Asia. Located at the ground floor near the resort casino’s other fine dining establishments like Red Lantern and Yakumi, KIWA adds a much-needed Korean restaurant to Solaire’s lineup, especially as a third of the casino’s gaming patrons are made up of Korean nationals.
KIWA actually means roof tiles in Korean and this highlights the aesthetic harmony of traditional and modern elements inside the beautifully-designed restaurant.
Brightly-lit lanterns and trees surround the spacious dining area of Kiwa which can accommodate around 184 guests. Most of the luxurious furniture and interiors are imported from Korea and the owners have spared no expense in making sure that Kiwa ranks as the best-looking Korean restaurant in the country.
Each table has its own state-of-the-art griller in the center, perfect for cooking and sharing the finest traditional Korean specialties that are offered on the menu. Kiwa uses only premium ingredients and traditional preparation techniques done by world-class Korean chefs who serve authentic charcoal-grilled seasoned beef ribs and other artisan creations.
Kiwa also has eight private VIP rooms which can be combined to seat from 8 to 48 guests. A fun and festive night awaited as The Hungry Kat, together with my KTG friends, were invited to sample some of the specialty Korean dishes at Kiwa, as well as a couple of new items on their menu.
We were hosted by none other than the lovely Chef Cecille Chang who is the new general manager of Kiwa Korean Grill. I first met Chef Cecille at ultra-hip 71 Gramercy where she also works as the general manager, so I knew we were going to have a great evening.
To make the night more eventful, Kiwa offers a selection of Korean beverages like the Chamisul Soju (P280). A few shots of this soju will definitely make your group more entertaining.
They also offer various premium Korean beers like the Kloud (P220) which has a rich and smooth taste. Fruit shakes, sodas and teas are also available.
The owners of Kiwa Korean Grill also personally dropped by to greet us and to make sure that we get the best Korean grill dining experience we can imagine. Everything at Kiwa is high-quality and top-notch from the furnitures to the grilling system and of course the food itself, which is why many Koreans and local foodies who have a taste for luxury dine at Kiwa.
We started with a few appetizers like the Yuk Hoe which has soy-based raw beef mixed with pear and vegetables. I am quite used to eating sushi and sashimi but seldom do I try raw beef. However, one taste of this soft and tender beef made me change my mind. This is a Korean version of the steak tartare but I like this so much more. The pears are imported from Korea and mixing it together with the beef and egg turns it into a great soft and crunchy appetizer.
Next we had the Jap Chae (P600) which is a Korean noodle dish made with pan fried glass noodles, beef and assorted vegetables. I like eating Jap Chae at BonChon but this version is definitely an upgrade with its smooth and very flavorful noodles and generous toppings and ingredients.
The Kimchi Jeon (P600) or kimchi pancake was a new dish for me but I also liked its crunchy texture mixed together with onions and vegetables. The pancake itself was not really spicy but dip it in the sweet chili gochujang sauce to give it a mild kick.
The Tomato Yangsangchu (P600) was probably the least exciting of the appetizers but probably one of the most lovely to look at. It has seasoned seafood topped on a whole tomato with other mixed vegetables. It does have a refreshing taste to cleanse the palate and get it ready for the next meaty dishes.
Our last appetizer does not even look like an appetizer at all because the Chadol Baki (P1000) is a pan fried beef brisket salad topped with yuzu dressing. The thinly-sliced beef was amazing and this is the type of salad that I would gladly eat everyday.
Now it’s time to get grilling so let’s head on to the main courses, the barbecues! Kiwa uses Grade A+ beef and wagyu imported from the USA and Japan which have the best quality in the world. One of their specialties is the Yang Nyeom Galbi (P1,300/200g) or beef short ribs marinated with a special sweet soy sauce.
Kiwa has built specially designed grillers with underground exhaust systems such that you will not even see the smoke coming out from the grill. Unlike other Korean barbecue restaurant with large overhead exhaust fans, Kiwa places these under the floors so that the diners will not have to come out the restaurant smelling like barbecue themselves. They also use Korean charcoal for the grills which really makes this a truly authentic Korean barbecue.
Since this is a fine dining grill, you don’t have to cook the barbecues yourself because the helpful servers will do all the work for you.
The beef short ribs are cut into bite-sized pieces and the grill does all the magic. These short ribs are just heavenly! Each bite is so tender and so flavorful with the wonderful beefy taste that only charcoal grilling can give.
They also serve a plate of vegetables with garlic and chili sauce if you want to wrap your beef inside them. I prefer eating my beef as is without any need for vegetables, thank you.
Our next barbecue is the Grilled Chicken which is a simple but delicious item as well. The grill and charcoals are actually replaced before they put on the next dish to avoid leaving black char marks on the meats which Koreans do not like. There’s no chance of flavors mixing together because the grill is replaced with every new item.
The freshly grilled chicken is also quite tender and juicy. Filipinos will probably want to order a bowl of rice to go with these wonderful meats so feel free to ask for one. Some of these items are not yet on the menu but Kiwa will be releasing a new menu which includes these dishes soon.
They also served the Grilled Mixed Seafood which has a combination of scallops, prawns, fish and octopus marinated with a soy based sauce. The fresh seafood items had a strong lemony taste after they were cooked but I particularly liked the big juicy scallops.
After those barbecued meats, it’s time to wind down with their version of the Calamari or spicy squid served with noodles and vegetables. This one has a Kimchi-like flavor and you can mix it together with the noodles to create an entirely new dish.
Lastly, we tried their Bibimbap which is a Korean fried rice topped with vegetables, beef and egg. Mix all the ingredients together and you have a rice dish that you can eat on its own. It is also served with seaweed soup.
We also got to try their Patbingsu for dessert. This is a Korean style halo halo with shaved ice combined with red bean paste, watermelon, cereals and mochi. The ingredients are definitely different from the halo halo and I actually like this more, especially with the chewy mochi bits.
Kiwa Korean Grill Dining is set to redefine the restaurant scene as it offers the most upscale and elegant Korean grill dining experience in the counry. Since it opened in January, many Korean patrons and high-rollers have been returning for its exquisite ambiance and authentic Korean dishes. The prices may be steep, but there is nowhere else in the city where you can get the kind of quality and service that Kiwa provides. So come and taste the good life at Kiwa Korean Grill.
