Unsounded is an amazing comic with wonderful characters and dialogue. I have read it one and a half times now, and I think I have found satisfactory answers to a very important question. What are the characters' opinions on trans people?
Duane Adelier: I think he would be supportive of trans people if he met and talked to one. He would still need a bit more convincing to accept non-binary genders though, and he'd probably still be casually misogynistic.
Sette Frummagem: She would probably be supportive but would also make transphobic jokes occasionally, no matter what boundaries any individual trans people have set. I'd put the rest of the Frummagem family in this category, with varying degrees of disrespect, except from Anadyne, who i think would be just supportive, as she is not interested in petty bouts of one-ups-manship.
Mathis Quigley: I don't think he cares for trans people. But only because he is generally misanthropic, not because he is particularly bigoted. Nevertheless, I wouldn't expect any allyship from him.
Matty: He's a sweet baby boy. He would definitely be supportive.
Jivi: He would be supportive, but he would be prickly about it initially. Like he might get one's name or pronouns wrong and when they correct him he'd get mad, but I think that eventually he would get over it and be normal about it.
Emil Toma: There is a point where Mathis debates Duane's humanity but Emil is like "you say your name is Duane and I accept it and that's how I'll treat you". So I think he would be supportive of trans people. If a trans person committed crimes against the crescian queen, Emil would definitely use their correct name and pronouns as he arrested them.
Elka: She would be generally positive, but she would misgender a trans person she thinks did something bad.
Bastion Winalils: Supportive, but he may or may not be a chaser.
Queen Sonorie: Of course she is supportive of trans people. However, her plans as a politician do not include them, as she believes she has much more pressing matters to attend to.
General Bell: If Bell lived in the current real world he would be a youtuber that made videos about being an alpha male, so I'm pretty sure he would be a transphobe.
Cutter: Transphobic, but only because he hates everyone already.
Starfish: Transphobic. He would commit hate crimes.
Murkoph: Supportive. He would commit hate crimes.

Obviously, there are style differences between the two shots, but I am Obsessed at how Sette's perception of Bastion has affected her memory of him.
The right image is much earlier in the comic, chapter 4 to be precise, well before Sette or the audience learns a sliver of the truth concerning the mission she and Duane are on. Here, Sette remembers Bastion as bored, arrogant, and mysterious, and despite the apparent details, there's a softness to the memory.
The left image is today's page, and Sette's memory has sharpened, depicting Bastion as something more malignant and smirking, a villain hiding the true mastermind of the plan in plain sight. The further this plot has gone, the more Bastion and his role in it has unsettled Sette, and I feel like you can really pick up on that here at the eleventh hour.

Fanfiction idea for a less upsetting writer than I:
Chea x Matty (platonic) with Chea as a burgeoning young mech pilot with eyes on the Peaceguard, copiloting a brand new Sonorie Tortoise (mkII) with Matty after a split seam dropped the squish-haunted copper beans from Chitz all over the interior during a tour with his friend, where they immediately integrated with whatever space was left in the pymaric work for the spreader. Matty’s a little hampered in that his sight is now permanently tethered to a mountain ogre’s face, but Vienne’s spreader technology was hyper-compatible with the Uaid squishes and it’s now a marvel on par with the original field spreader’s when compared to it itself.
Also they spar with Sette-and-Boo

Whumptober 2024 - 02 - "Trust Issue"
"It were in a periodical," Sette said again, walking tiny circuits around her attack zombie as he rummaged through his bag, "For wives and husbands to stop 'em throwin' bottles at each other and the neighbours poundin' on their wall. It were all drawn out in detail, with black eyes on everyone, the most brill art I seen ever."
"We are not wed," said Duane, pulling out his journal, a few tins of sardines, a stack of blank envelopes. "Anteit vaosa, you are certain the compass is lost? I would wager a rib I wrapped it again in its silk and replaced it in its case!"
"Probably you ate it. Listen to me and what I'm sayin'! In this periodical it said this thing makes one person trust the other! It ain't only for wives!"
Duane looked up at her like a hair in his soup. "Why don't you go into town and purchase a new compass? I will give you the money for it." Sette kicked him, for educational purposes.
"I'll navigate us by the stars! We Sharteshanians is born celestial navigators! Now here, you stand there on the path where I marked the spot with the sticks, and then ya fall back inta me arms and I catch ya!"
"You'll be crushed."
Sette chortled. "You don't hardly weigh more'n a gob of spit. I got the angle figured, and I'll stop ya hittin' the hard and cold dirt, and you'll see the Frummagems got only the purest of intentions for ya and you can trust us easy as breathin'."
Duane opened his disgusting corpse mouth to contradict this last assumption, and Sette waited for the words to fall out. Stared at him, expecting it. Challenged him! He should breathe anyway like a normal person, and it was pure stubbornness that he didn't!
Wisely, he swallowed it back, then dutifully stood and planted himself atop the crossed sticks like a great grey mainmast, his cloak billowing sail-like in the breeze. Sette positioned herself behind him. She spread her arms.
"A swoon comes upon ya!" she prompted, "Oh, a paroxysm from that last brain ya ate, it musta been spoilt! Good and fortunate that Sette Frummagem awaits to trustfully catch you in your moment of vulnerableness!"
Sette watched the back of his hood, anticipating. It wibbled slightly. One boot twitched indecisively in the dust.
Then: "Did you steal the compass?"
Sette huffed and threw up her arms.
"There's no savin' this marriage!"

Duane Adelier is like a really cool uncle that is eloquent but also fun, has interesting stories to tell, is great with kids, but then is also racist against albanians and romani people.
Sette Frummagem is what if Andrew Tate was a little girl.

and because i now HAVE to: riven and bastion
We are entering slight AU, non-canon compliant territory because it's the only way the twist with Riven is possible, but as long as we have fun, right?
Bastion should be focusing on the Silver, on Duane and Sette getting where they need to go, of ensuring Lady Ilganyag's plan is carried out. And he is! But he just can't get that Sharte rogue out of his mind.
Because a glamour, a true glamour, shouldn't exist, should be impossible, and yet there she was, wearing one as easily as you please. Did she know? Surely, she must know! But then, why hasn't anyone moved on this? Taken advantage of it for military use or espionage? Where is the money, and why hasn't Jeb Beadman either claimed the pymaric innovation for himself or prevented its existence if he can't?
Bastion needs answers, and he needs to study that Sharte like a bug. If he could crack the spellwork, he'd never require another patron again, could fund his every ambition and flight of fancy. He can't quite believe she herself was capable of such a feat of spellery. Aside from standing out in Sharteshane with her pink hair like a pimple on an arse, he sensed nothing remotely special about her. Could that be it? How much can a true glamour mask from all sight?
When Bastion confronts Riven, he expects her to deny everything, to deflect, to attack him. He's ready for every possibility except for what he receives: her utter cluelessness. When he demands after her real appearance, she argues that she's always looked like herself and that must've smoked too much purple weed. He plucks a pink hair from her head, shows her it's turned white, and wants to wring her neck when she rolls her eyes and calls him blind. "My hair's just light, ya arse!"
As much as that conversation goes nowhere, Riven eventually probes her da about it like "listen to this chucklesome lipflap," only her da doesn't laugh. He tells her she is glamoured and some horror-show experiment from her Copper mother and long-dead Plat father. That it was all he could do for her biological father to get her out of there and have them both live as expats. But it shouldn't change anything. She's more a Sharte now than she is whatever Aldish mutant they tried to make her—even if he cannot say how long she has to live.
Riven can't get out of there fast enough. She doesn't know what any of this news means. Alderode is supposed to be a bad story that doesn't quite feel real, not her origin. Coppers, Plats, what does any of that shite even mean? She's in a subsidiary of the Frummagem gang; if and when she dies, it'll be with a dagger in hand and another in her back.
By the time she returns, resolved, everything has changed. Nary's left, and the power vacuum he's left behind has ripped through the ranks. Bodie's emerged as the new gang leader, and Riven's da, her adoptive da, is dead. And she didn't even do what was expected of her, taking him out herself, wasn't there to defend the family. She's unfit to lead it.
(And she realizes that she wouldn't have wanted to kill him, but to protect him—the way she should've protected Sette while betailed girl was here, but she hadn't been brave enough or strong enough to do it.)
Bastion's job to coax her towards Alderode becomes easy. He can help her discover who her father was, if her mother still lives. Together, they can uncover the secrets of her existence and whether she is doomed to early aging and death or a longevity that leads to madness (or something new in between). If Riven hurries, she may also be able to help Sette and make up for her mistakes.
Not that Bastion intends to let her reach Sette. The route he gives her leads along a very different path.
He has Timofey monitor Riven's progress while he's busy and checks in on her when he's not. It's never too early to begin theorizing and experimenting with her glamour and what pymary is behind it, and Lady Ilganyag doesn't interfere.
Riven doesn't trust Bastion, but he's all she has while she's mourning the life and future she once had. He can answer questions about Alderode that she never believed she would need to ask. There is also an intense intimacy he brings to his examinations and treatments of her that she isn't used to. Isn't something like this supposed to be clinical and painful? Sometimes it's the latter, but Bastion is well practiced in drawing pleasure out of pain.
Bastion is also obsessive when it comes to all things pymary, particularly when it involves something he doesn't understand. The endless questions pile up. (Does the Dammakhert recognize her, or is she like a Soud? Will she react to the Etalarche curse? Could the secret behind her glamour help stop the transfer of the Weeping Plague? How is it done? What is it? What is she?) And it becomes all too easy for Riven to feel that Bastion's obsession with her condition translates to an obsession for her. The lines blur and blur.
Because of course Bastion's poking and proding becomes flirtatious and sexual. He can't not around a warm body and a pretty face, and Riven is a fun blend of prickly and easily flustered and so endearingly, foolishly brave. It's heady to find a Sharte that is capable of being corruptible outside of lawbreaking. (And maybe Bastion is darkly bitter that a Sharte criminal still possesses nobility and idealism with more clarity and ease than he does. Part of him wants to test and taint that with some darkness while another part of him is helplessly drawn to it all the same.)
The closer she gets to Bastion, the more curious about him she gets. Why does he always look like shite? (She's worried.) What, exactly, does he do for the Black Tongues? (Nothing. They're having creative differences at the moment.) Who is Tittybird? ("A nosy old bitch and the love of my life.") There are times he spills his guts and times he's elusive, but Riven can't seem to breach past his wall in either case. Increasingly, she is determined to do so. What's real in there? Now they're both like obsessive med students, studying each other like bugs.
So if this push-and-pull, give-and-take dance they're doing is what gets her to Alderode faster, where his equipment and the real fun work can begin, all the better.
I'm also enjoying the thought of Riven doing what she does with every person she wides up liking on any level, and that's acquire stuff for them that reminds her of them or that she thinks they'll like. It's her love language. I imagine Bastion will be amused by this (especially if she acknowledges Tirnasday), but he'll quickly get over it once she starts leaving too much random shit in his already disgusting hideaway lol

Man Unsounded is really good, and I’m surprised in a good way to see how recognized it is among the folks taking these polls.
if you only recognize it but aren’t keeping up oh boy howdy do in suggest you do so 👀👀 shit has popped off in major ways, with interesting story turns and character arcs that feel very poignant, complex, and rarely seen in other works. If you read it and fell off, catch up again! It’s on the final chapter of book 1, so climaxes are coming at us hard and fast. It will probably be complete by year’s end- and then comes kickstarters and the wait for Book 2!
Oh right another thing to say about Unsounded- this comic is honestly as top of the line as you can get when it comes to updates- regularity, consistency, quality. It’s M-W-F but author and artist Ashley Cope will often drop multiple pages as best serves the flow of the update, and then take a break to make up for them. And she has only missed updates because of hurricanes! This woman is a workhorse and is reliable and just- this is a labor of love, a great work of art, and I recommend whole heartedly.
The story revolves around two traveling companions- Sette Frummagem, a girl with a tail that is the daughter of a Crime Boss, and Duane Adelier, the uniquely intelligent zombie blackmailed hired to protect her as she travels across the country to settle a family debt.
Of course, they aren’t the only ones on the road, and Sette and Duane find themselves running into a slave smuggling ring and a pair of foreign cops again and again. Their stories converge and eventually explode. Unsounded ponders what it means to be human, to love, to live, to die, to be remembered, and to be forgotten.
So a few things about Unsounded since I’m like, propagandizing it-
1. Be mindful of all the trigger warnings, but don’t let that scare you off. In terms of content, I’d say if you can stomach the plot of Berserk (even if you don’t like it, as I don’t) then Unsounded is just fine. But also, yeah, be mindful of violence (including sexual) to men, women, and children, as well as gore and body horror.
2. Within the fandom there’s talk of the “Sette Filter” in chapter one, with many people deciding to drop the comic there because of her. I guess I don’t get it since I love Sette, but also if you find her grating after chapter one try to keep an open mind. She IS the Main Character (one of them) so you’ll be spending a lot of time with her. Give her empathy and patience, and she will repay you, I promise.
So yeah. Read Unsounded.
