Tumblr media
Seniar is a forty-two-year-old single father with a huge secret: He is not actually who he appears to be at all. After his failure to serve and protect his people, he has left his responsibilities as a general and as royalty and has left all hope of restoring their civilization to its former glory.

One of my favorite ocs of mine is Seniar (Anna's dad) because as flawed as he is, he still does everything in his power to care for and protect his daughter who he raised on his own after he lost everything

People may judge Seniar for hiding his past and their true nature from Anna, instead choosing to run and hide. He is by no means a perfect father or person, but imagine how heartbreaking it is for one's family to advocate for the death of their child. Think then of how the only reason that Anna did not die was that their homeland was ransacked and the people (including his family) massacred, and how the lives of his wife and other daughter were exchanged by fate for Anna to survive.

Seniar doesn't have a "job" per se...
To support himself and his daughter, and his mobile living habits, he returns to Ariya to recollect his family's riches that no longer have use. He then sells the gold and jewels that had once been held by the royals.
Though he does take care to avoid culturally significant pieces and potential contamination pieces. (Wait a second, this material doesn't exist on earth! Where'd it come from???)

Hecathian Surnames Are Confusing
And I have no one to blame but myself
So yes, Hecathian parents and children do not share surnames, instead, aspects are shared depending on circumstances.
The first syllable is typically taken from the mother's surname- in same-sex relationships, it is up to individuals to decide which family to associate a child with.
The amount of syllables comes from the father's surname- in same-sex relationships, this quality is taken from the opposite parent.
The rest of the name's makeup is decided by the parents by blending different pieces of both their first names and surnames for all of their children together to use.
Example:
Natalie Ophia (Natalie's adopted Hecathian surname) + Seniar Ocoltha= Ophelie
There is, however, one family that has one other rule...
The Verairacur family has kept the name in use for the 500 years they've been in power. The Verairacur name is used only by the current leader and their direct heir. All other members of their family are to use traditional naming habits, as the last name of Verairacur is more of a title than a true last name now.
Example:
Sisters, Kesritae Verairacur & Roselle Jakoste

Why does Jacob's weapon matter?
In Chapters 8 & 9, it's revealed that Jacob has a golden sword with a distinctive red gem. This is no ordinary weapon and is one that he only received in Chapter 4 from none other than Seniar Ocoltha. When his team sees this in his possession, they can only respond with shock and confusion, due to this particular sword's nature, history, and cultural symbolism.
In Hecathian mythology (or in this case, elaborate history) there are twelve legendary blades that hold various abilities to assist their wielders. They reflect their holder in their form, both as they lie dormant and in use. These swords are usually held by rulers or influential figures, and this golden sword is one of the most recognizable of all of these legendary weapons.
The blade of Sarodekor drains its enemies' energy with each strike, which has led to many victories in its long existence. No victory stands as notable as the one of its holder Lietasae Verairacur, granting her and her family overarching power across all 18 nations. This blade quickly became a symbol of the royal throne and was always held by the current ruler from that moment on.
Passed down, generation to generation, and during the attack that destroyed their civilization, was given to Seniar after his brother, the king, was killed. For years, Seniar held onto this weapon as the "rightful heir," but never used it or accepted what it meant for him to hold such an artifact.
When Seniar asks Jacob to protect Anna, he gives Jacob the camouflaged blade, both ridding it from his life and passing the sword representing power and leadership to someone he sees as worthy due to his association with his father (as justified as that may be) who Seniar respected and trusted and to mark the influence that Jacob's family now had with the surviving members of their society.
Though taken hesitantly and upon Seniar's insistence, Jacob does choose to wield this blade. The question that is raised by such a choice is what it now means for the sixteen-year-old non-royal to hold the sword that historically determined their ruler and whether it should mean anything at all.

Find the Word
I was tagged by @aohendo; thank you so much!
I'm tagging: @write-nor-wrong, @words-after-midnight, @mrgreatgiant, @j-1173, and @human-still-developing your words are: Worse, Wander, Mindlessly, Join, and Hysteria
My words are: dampen, moist, ripple, cool, and current.
Dampen- Substituted Damp- From "Ruin" Part 1
When it emerged, Lirrynae felt her breath leave her, as this was no wild animal, but something she only recognized from photos within her textbooks. A Chovera daemon was now prowling toward them on all fours, its brown fur raised and talons raking into the dirt.
Behind her, Jenaisa let out a whimper no louder than a whisper, but it was enough to prompt the daemon to pounce. Its strong jaws snapped at where they had been a moment before while Lirrynae threw them both to the ground. Her eyes were wide with panic as she pushed herself quickly to her feet, rushing to pull Jenaisa up beside her. “Go,” she gasped.
“Go where?” her blue eyes were damp and wild with terror, tightening with horror as the monster turned its dark gaze back on them.
“Anywhere,” Lirrynae snapped, pushing her love away while she ran the opposite way, hoping to distract it as it hunched over in preparation for another attack. It rounded on her, and she could only be relieved as she could see Jenaisa’s figure darting behind it.
It snarled, and Lirrynae ignored the shock of fear it sent through her body. If she had been armed, this fight would have been over by now, she would have lunged for it, slitting its throat where it stood. Instead, she was left staring it down with empty hands and an ability that did little in this situation.
Moist- Appears as Moisture- From "Legacy of the Fallen" Chap. 3
Jacob’s feet rattled down the front staircase of the school, tennis shoes squeaking ever so slightly from the moisture brought inside from the spring rainstorm, the bag that was slung over his shoulder bouncing off his hip with each step. When he came to the last step, he pushed himself off with an extra hop, landing a good couple feet away from the base, the echo of his feet bouncing off the white-painted brick.
He couldn’t help his good mood, the last week being more eventful- in a good way- than school had been for a few months. Sure, new students were common, but he, himself, had been the last to join his current group, and Anna had joined so quickly and easily.
He couldn’t help but feel some type of draw to her, though he couldn’t identify exactly why. There was just this familiar feeling about her, just something about her itched the edge of his mind, reminding him of someone, though he didn’t know who. She also just had this overwhelming sense of innocence to her, that if one didn’t even know her name, they couldn’t help but protect her. Just like Rachel had done two days prior. He also couldn’t help but want to help her adjust, after all, he had been a new student not too long ago too. He scanned the hallway junction as he exited the stairwell, checking for her sunshine blonde hair. No sign of her yet. Darn, he couldn’t help the thought as it came to the forefront of his mind even if he tried. He turned into the hallway on his left that ran directly underneath the school’s main entrance. The walls were completely covered by lockers with only three doors on one side, the swarm of students around him sending that slightly claustrophobic feeling that only this hallway accomplished. It was identical to the rest in the building, yet it had the power to make it feel like the lights didn’t shine as brightly, that it was narrower, or that the ceiling was somehow lower than it was.
Ripple- Appears as Ripples- From "Legacy of the Fallen" Chap. 5
“I must point out that she has been raised under the guidance of Seniar Ocoltha,” Mesaiad reminded them all. “I would go to argue that if anyone would tame such a ‘danger’ as you call her, it would be him. The man that we,” she shot a look at Maishear. “And many others knew, would never allow for such a volatile nature in anyone, much less his own daughter.”
“Maybe not purposefully,” Maishear opposed, golden eyes narrowed. “Yet, we also can’t assume that Seniar is that same man we knew then. None of us are the same as we were before, along with thirteen years unaccounted for. As he would be our rightful king, he has gone against his responsibility and sworn duties already.”
That point caused ripples to spread through the council, all eyes daring to look at Kesritae, who had continued to sit in silence. It was as though they weren’t discussing the fate of one of her only living relatives; the conversation having nothing to do with her.
“It is only reasonable to answer these questions by getting a better hold of this situation,” Mesaiad hardly seemed fazed. “I would go to say that Seniar staying away is strictly for his daughter’s safety, as he would know this is our first response to her survival.”
The headmaster didn’t have a comeback, instead standing with a stony expression on his face. “Please discuss among yourselves and prepare to bring forward your judgment.”
Cool- From "Legacy of the Fallen" Chap. 10
“Murder?” Jacob’s blood ran cold, and he sucked in a shaking breath. He fisted his hands, trying, but failing to keep his composure.
His father was hardly affected. The humans found a body of a student within the school. Security footage places you as the last to be with him.”
Asher. He knew it had to have been him, but it made no sense. Something had been deadly wrong, but he had been too distracted to even notice the extent that something could have happened right under his nose. “Me,” he breathed instead.
“Due to this warrant,” his father continued. “You are restricted to the grounds until further notice. This is in addition to you ignoring the order to return, as well as taking this mission at all. You not only put those children in your care at risk, but you have also placed every one of us in danger. There is only so much I can do to cool this fire. In leaving, you also disregarded the responsibilities you hold here.”
Didn’t he know it. Jacob swallowed, subdued a flinch at every point. His mind wandered to Asher, nausea building in his gut as he imagined the boy crumpled on the floor, lifeless. He had welcomed Jacob with little question, showing him compassion from the moment he had sat down beside him on his first day there. Whatever had happened to him, he didn’t deserve it.
Current- From "Ruin" Part 1
She pulled Jenaisa’s body to hers, not caring if their combined weight would pull them both under. Her love’s head lolled against Lirrynae’s shoulder while she gripped her tightly, pressing her face into her soaked hair.
Lirrynae closed her eyes, allowing the ocean to pull at her as she held her tight, the ache settling in her heart. She remained like that, wrapped around Jenaisa’s body as she wept until she could no longer, and the heat had begun to seep from her love. Still, she held on, but she began to fight against the current pushing them back toward the cliff.
Jenaisa was gone, but she would want Lirrynae to continue on. That was what Lirrynae told herself as she swam, following the coastline with Jenaisa’s body pulled against her back.
She didn’t know how long she had been swimming before the land had finally tapered down enough for her to climb onto, her muscles shaking, teeth grit as she pulled herself and Jenaisa out of the heavy water. They were still in the middle of nowhere, but there was no daemon in sight.
She lay on the sand, her whole body on fire, staring up at the same starry sky above. She didn’t want to turn her head and see the pain waiting for her. As her eyelids drooped, she could almost convince herself that they were only sleeping together under the stars, just as she had planned.
