Saint Camillus de Lellis

Feast Day: July 18

Patronage: the sick, physicians, nurses, hospitals, doctors

Saint Camillus de Lellis was an Italian soldier that overcame his gambling habit and other vices to become a Capuchin Priest. After he received permission from his confessor, St. Philip Neri, he founded the Camillian order to minister to the sick and wounded soldiers, building hospitals and the first field medical units in the battlefield. The red cross symbol was their sign of charity and service. After years of suffering from a battle wound, he died in Rome.

It may have been pointed out before, but St. Agatha is patron saint of sexual assault victims, torture victims, and nurses. It may be part of the hagiography going on with the hospital and Sister Agatha.

I went to Pittsburgh last week to visit my father, who has dementia. It’s getting worse, which means that every time he saw me, he was like ‘when did you get in? how long are you staying?’ Worse, the bad parts of his personality are becoming magnified, which means he’s often ranting about the people taking care of him or droning on about conspiracy theories. (I *do* blame Fox News for at least part of his condition.) In short, dementia is a terrible way to go, I wouldn’t recommend it. But it was nice to drive around Pittsburgh with my mother and older brother. The hills are beautiful; there’s always a sense of mystery when you’re twisting through them. There are stairs everywhere.

Saint Margaret of Antioch 3rd C. Feast day: July 20 Patronage: childbirth, pregnancy, backache, kidney disease, sterility, dying people, against the devil, exiles, falsely accused martyrs, nurses

Saint Margaret of Antioch's life is shrouded in legend. When her father, a pagan priest, found out that Margaret converted to Christianity, he cast her out of the home. She became a shepherdess and attracted the attention of a Roman Prefect whom she rejected. He then had her tortured and she was eventually martyred. It is said that while she was in prison the devil appeared as a serpent and swallowed her but spit her out because of the cross she held. She is one of the popular Middle Ages 14 Holy Helpers and was one of the voices St. Joan of Arc heard.
