I just wanna talk about stuff and it's going to be a little hater-y so if you like starkid you probably don't wanna read this.

I really liked "the guy who didn't like musicals"- the story didn't get slowed down by the music and, like "twisted" the songs weren't there just to make the play a musical. But I was interested in the story universe whatever of hatchetfield, seemed interesting and I didnt want to spoil it for myself- so as far as I knew, it was a series of musicals that were about this one town getting destroyed over and over, which sounded funny. So I watched "black friday" and boy was it hard to get through. Every single song stopped the story and just seemed to be there to be like "wow, cant this person sing good? Listen to them sing high notes for a really long time." And like. Obviously the fans are fans of the people, so its also playing into "you know this guy listen to him sing". But none of the music actaully pushed the plot forward? Like it was a lot of repeating themselves and in black Friday the only song that would actually make sense is the toy commercial. But I dont really want to listen to three two minute songs in a row about some character singing about their past. And in a completely different genre theres "Trail to Oregon". A fun idea, and I see why people like it but like. The music is just there to be there, not really a reason for it to be a song- it just stops the story and also I feel like starkid is really at its strongest when there aren't little gags that are nothing. Like if you want to have people emotionally invested in your silly show, then you have to give them a rope. I know trail to Oregon is just a silly show- but it couldve been so much more if you didn't let silly gags be gags. Like in "the guy who didn't like musicals" theres little gags like someone ruining the coffee and so people in the office don't drink it or the tossing around of keys, which are small things that you might miss but they pay off. In Oregon, grandpa gets shot and nothing comes of it? At least as far as I got- i watched most of the show and stopped cause it just wasn't my cup of tea, so the small things might pay off- but I dont really like when shows do that kind of stuff. Anyways. All this to say- i think starkid has really good potential. But they can do better. Hold themselves to a higher standard. Songs in a musical should progress the plot and one off gags are *really good* if they pay off later.

not to get too political, i feel like the whole "respectability politics" thing was heavily embraced and expected of angels considering the symbolism of their existence, and it was probably pushed even more so among angels of color like mammon, simeon, and raphael

mammon falling from grace allowed him to not have to live up to the celestial realms rigid respectability politics. yes, he still has to maintain some sort of professional front considering his status in the devildom, but he's able to be prideful in who he is and how he acts without anyone breathing down his neck for speaking or presenting himself in a certain way
