sometimes i’m normal about the hunger games and then i remember that in district 12 there’s a wedding ceremony where the couple toasts a piece of bread together in order to signify the beginning of their shared new life and then the main character and her love interest are the girl on fire and the boy with the bread and their first fucking interaction is when he burns a loaf of bread to give to her

is anyone else so excited for the book, but really dreading the movie?

olive-skinned haymitch/seam isn’t a want, it’s a need at this point, but as they are expanding the visual universe and continuing casting white people in every district, it’s making it less canon that katniss, gale, haymitch and the seam are brown and that the divide between seam and merchant is apparent and noticeable. because to them (casting agents, director, etc), besides jessup and a couple extras, BIPOC people only exist in D11, not even in D10 which is located where Central America is today.

and this is no hate to suzanne because i really love the series and i will always support it, i just hate the concept of writing the book and lionsgate making a shit ton of money capitalizing off the world and lessons suzanne is trying to warn audiences. because for some reason the general public spent a good two months thirsting over a dictator and excusing his actions and abuse. and now it’s trendy for people to call zendaya and law roach “katniss and cinna” like katniss’s fashionable moments weren’t occurring under tragic circumstances. these people are the capitol citizens and should be gatekept from them.

there is so much potential for the book though and im still very excited!

no i agree i used to be on the “coryo is just a psycho” side until i re read the book. like the whole point was that we’re supposed to feel for him the way we felt for katniss and it INFURIATES ME when i have to explain that to people

hi just to also chime in, the problem with the hunger games is ironically that it became so popular that it was so watered down in the public conscious, all the copycat katnisses seem to take the aspects of her character that suzanne collins wrote explicitly to be part of the in world propaganda and katniss herself is a very nuanced well written female character, and so yeah when people say ‘for fans of the hunger games’ i also think oh noo nevermind..

personally, i don’t really notice the difference between reading a MMC and a FMC, i enjoy them both the same amount and im ngl i really think that boils down to the quality of writing and also the plot?? for example when i read things like convenience store woman, i see a deep reflection in myself and relate to the MC as a woman, but then you get fifty shades where the MC is unrelatable and doesn’t feel like a real person, and the same with a male narrative i guess?

when it comes to being able to relate to the main character, i think at the end of the day it really comes down to the way the character is written, how real they feel, how they make the reader feel, and their gender should really come secondary to that? another example i guess is lord of the rings? like i never really read the hobbit or lotr thinking that im listening to an MMC’s perspective?? does that make sense? i’m using so many question marks sorry hahaah

but also and finally i think in terms of the current fantasy landscape, an MMC would be refreshing? especially one written with deep feelings, humour and romance??

All true, no lie :) Personally, as long as the character is interesting, I want to read about them, I don't really need to see myself in them, but it's always a plus when I can connect with them on a human level and understand their decisions and motivation. But anyway, yeah, I would read something like that too!

sometimes i wish that the hunger games movies were casted a little differently. do not get me wrong, i absolutely adore jennifer lawrence and josh hutcherson !! their acting was perfect and felt so incredibly real !!! however, i feel like it was harder for people to truly understand what the entirety of the games were, with how much older they looked compared to their actual age in the book. most people in the cast were in their 20s/30s during the filming of the movie, while in the book they were a lot younger. as seen in the "if it werent for the baby" scene; as humans, we sympathize a lot more with the younger people are. specially babies, kids and teens. yes, the movies did show how disgusting and horrible the games were, however, they did not exactly tap into a lot of peoples "they are just kids" mindset. one of the most memorable parts of the movies, however, is rue (and prims) death, which is one of a kid played by a kid. aka: the "they are just kids" mindset. if katniss, peeta, and gale were casted as they were in the books (16, 16, 18) they (being both the movie writers and the audience) would have focused more on the horribleness of it all, rather than the "love triangle" the movie tried to create to get more viewers. this also goes to show about the fact that people seem to dislike katniss' character for being too "mean" and "rude". in the books, we see a scared, traumatized kid, while the movies see a scared, traumatized adult (yes, i know she was a kid in the movies too, but a lot of people see her as jennifers age at the time, which was in her 20s) and as much as we should treat trauma equally, many people tend to show more sympathy, and understanding of the actions for kids with trauma then adults. this goes for gale as well. in the books, even if you dont like his character, you will be able to somewhat sympathize with him and understand how complex he is (+ this only applies you have common media literacy !!) while in the movies, we see an adult making all of his "mistakes", and think "well, he should know better!" if it were an 18-year-old boy in the movies who had just watched almost all of his district die, having to choose who to and who to not save, and then immediately get manipulated by coin (all while struggling with his grief, and anger towards the world) people would have understood him a lot better. while in the movies we get "prim reaper !! haha !!" "peeta is so much better ! i hate gale !!" (i was going to end this rant here, but i have one more thing and im done, i promise !) a lot of people will only watch the hunger games to talk about how hot, or attractive they find the characters, completely missing the point. these are kids. they are not some character whos whole point of being is for your visual approval. i will see an edit of finnick (i know he isnt a kid, but the point still stands) and the caption will be something like "i need him so badly" "on my knees for this man", and all i can think about is how many of you guys are just proving suzannes point. especially when it comes to finnicks plot, and what he went through because of snow at only 16. i will see people talk online about how much they love this ship, or about how attractive they find this character, but i rarely see anything talking about the actual point of the games (this is mainly only the nonreaders though) the movies completely went over half the audiences head, and i think that is similar as to what happened with tbosas too ("omg ! president snow is so hot !!") suzanne is just going to keep writing books and keep making them in movies, until everyone can finally understand the point of it all.

im sorry but gale is over hated. yes his attitude towards katniss and peeta was not great but he was a kid. i think he was like 18 ??? maybe ?? also hes deadass an extremely important revolutionary for the rebel districts and i think people focus way too much on the love triangle aspect rather than the actual point of the books.

hes mostly responsable for getting people out of district 12 when the capital bombed them, throughout the 74th games he kept katniss’s family fed and alive, and he was at the forefront of the rebel fighting.

like, his perspective is also an important one. each character represents a different viewpoint of oppression. hes being called a “manipulator”????😭😭

i just think hes taken out of context a lot and boiled down to a very 2dimensional character whose sole motivator is that hes jaded over his crush liking someone else. i feel like thats such a disservice to the books and to the nuances suzanne collins gave him

im not saying u have to like his character but i just dont see the point in pitting 2 people that have both been victims of violent fascism against each other (peeta and gale)

i also think that coin just straight up took advantage of his want to fight injustice as well as how young he was.

hi betts! thx for writing free ride, its one of my fav. i sent this bcz of your a/n at the end of chap 2: "I don't know where communist frat boy Sejanus or lowkey yandere Lucy Gray came from but they are here and they aren't leaving." im always afraid of characters running on their own when i try to write a fic. im afraid they wont be in character anymore if i let them be. so i try to be careful and meticulous, but instead it stops me from writing. have u ever tried to stop charas when they run on their own because they end up not in character? how do you do characterisation when you write a fic?

whenever i get an ask about how to stay IC, in my heart i'm wiping a cartoonish drop of sweat from my brow and stepping in front of a mountain of comments accusing me of OOC.

it's interesting to me that anxiety about writing OOC comes from a proprietary feeling toward existing characters. both our own proprietary feeling which grants us the interest in writing fanfic about them, but also the reader's proprietary feelings which lead them to go "he wouldn't fucking say that."

there's a paradox there, though. many of us write fic to be self-indulgent. self-indulgence means prioritizing the ideal. the ideal sometimes means taking characters away from their canon selves in order to fit the story we're writing.

my whole motivation for Free Ride is wanting to see how coriolanus would be different growing up in contemporary american capitalism. canonically, he's a tyrant. but we have no idea why or how, in canon, north america became panem. panem is not a free market economy; there's not even evidence coriolanus knows what capitalism is. controlling commerce is one of his greatest anxieties. the idea that the capitol could be once again cut off from necessary imports is what leads him to make virtually every decision he makes in both tbosas and thg. so i think he would detest the idea of a free market, but he would never be a socialist.

which is all to say, a lot of the fic i've written these past few years have been kind of "what if" character studies in lieu of writing meta. with that being the goal, i'm less concerned about the characterization of anyone else. suzanne collins set me up well with developing characters who have a strong voice; ultimately, when people say "he wouldn't fucking say that" i think they mean "he wouldn't fucking say that in that way." in the case of tbosas, with the film and book being so different in terms of characterization, i feel there's a bit of leniency anyway. i'm writing book coriolanus with movie lucy gray and sejanus.

also, i think part of the fun of fanfic is selling your characterization. "yandere lucy gray" is a kind of thesis statement and the fic, i hope, backs up that interpretation. sans fearing for her life, i think lucy gray would be a bored twentysomething who feels like a big fish in a little pond and is eager to indulge in the kind of intensity she craves. canonically, i think you can argue they bring out the worst in each other. consciously, i'd gone into this fic eager to see how coriolanus would develop in this particular circumstance. unconsciously, lucy gray and sejanus's voices developed on their own around the premise.

there have been a few situations where i wrote characters in the entirely wrong direction before catching myself. i think i had about 40k of Digging for Orchids written when i realized i'd written xie lian wrong. i imparted on him my own interpretation of a happy ending. i can't really wrap my head around ambition or the drive for fame, so initially he came to accept his fall from grace and moved on from acting. but i remembered that canonically he's a god and his story is about ascension. in a modern au, household name fame is what would make him happiest. so i had to go back a ways and write in a different direction so i could give him the ending he deserved, even if it's not something i would ever choose for myself.

which is all to say, it's important to acknowledge that what you want for your story and what is "right" (in this case, IC) may sometimes be at odds with each other. sometimes what you want is more important, because that's why you're writing in the first place. but sometimes you can have what you want and also stay IC. in the case of Free Ride, i could write you a paper on the choices i made about coriolanus's characterization. i have dozens of annotations in my copy of tbosas interpreting his canon behavior in a modern context. but my only support for communist frat boy sejanus is that i think it's very funny and also the movie totally mangled his character so i feel slightly more justified in making him who i need him to be for the story.

write the story you want to read. once it's written, you can go back and figure out if some piece of characterization isn't sitting right with you. in writing, all things can be fixed. and if you don't feel like fixing them, you don't have to. it's your story.

Hello! Hope you’re doing well!! I’m not sure you’d like followers to respond to/ interact with your posts w your thoughts in the tags but I just wanted to say that I totally agree w your thoughts on Coryo and Sejanus LOL. Im v surprised (tho I guess I shouldn’t be given how old I am at this point + the no. of fandoms I’ve been in) that people can read them so differently from the novel. Coryo is an unreliable narrator and that makes it kind of fun to read because his pov shouldn’t always be taken as the truth. In fact I think it’s fun to read how differently his peers view him/ his r/s w other people vs what he himself perceives. Sejanus is such a nice, sweet boy and it’s kinda sad that other people don’t read him that way just because the book is filtered through coryo’s thoughts haha. He’s kind and dares to stand up for what he believes in… I think the saddest thing abt his story is that he was genuinely trying to help others directly but unfortunately the people he spoke to weren’t the most honest/ dependable (I don’t think the stuff with the rebels would have gone down well) and he also trusted Coryo (I don’t blame him cause Coryo was the only “nice” person in the Capitol) 😭 I suppose that’s also how difficult it is to deal w people sometimes IRL (in extreme situations). Anyway ya just wanted to share my thoughts :x feel free to ignore if this isn’t something you’re ok with!!

hi nonie! i'm absolutely okay with followers interacting with my tags and posts/coming to talk about this stuff with me! as you can probably tell i've got a lot to say about this stuff - i'm just a chronic in the tag poster lol.

because suzanne collins wrote the ballad of songbirds and snakes in a third person point of view, i think that readers have taken to assuming that what they're getting is an unbiased narrator, when in fact we are still very much getting a biased point of view from coriolanus. sure, we are distanced from his thoughts--not exactly seeing things through his eyes as we did with katniss--but that doesn't mean we don't have access to him and that his thoughts aren't distorting what we are seeing. i've thought a lot about the reasons suzanne collins might've chosen to use third person pov when she used a first person pov for the rest of the novels, and i don't think there was one definite reason. some of the brilliance of suzanne collins' writing lies in the fact that you do have derive these meanings for yourself at times. personally, i like to think that she chose to use third person pov because this story, while very much coriolanus-centric, belonged to characters like sejanus plinth and lucy gray, too.

the fact that this book came out during the trump's presidency isn't at all lost on me. i think what suzanne collins was saying was: look how badly this system failed this once privileged white boy. for all intents and purposes this should make him angry, and here are these district kids who have suffered just as he has. he can relate more to them than he can to any of his capital peers. he knows what it is to hunger and suffer and fight for your life every day, to be made to perform. when coriolanus turns his back on sejanus plinth and lucy gray baird, it is so tragic because he was meant to side with them and yet at the end of the day he turned his back on them because he wanted to be with 'his people.' he upheld this system that had so failed him because he thought people like lucy gray and sejanus plinth were primitive and less than because that's the mindless shit he had been fed his entire life. this is exactly what happened during that election. i've seen countless white people, who are every bit as poor and destitute as the immigrants that seek to come to this country for help -- if not more -- turn their back on them and support trump. even the poorest of whites think they are better than the richest of latinos or black people because this what their systems teach them, and it makes them feel good to think that.

i think that's why sejanus was district 2 turned capital. i believe that this was commentary on how, no matter how far poc and/or immigrants come, these white people will always view them as less than and that the system will never be forgiving of them. i do genuinely believe that coriolanus thought that sejanus' parents would save him in the end, and the fact that they couldn't was so shocking because he had, up until that point, seen the ways wealth had benefited plinth. he could not conceptualize a world where wealth wouldn't get a person what they wanted because he did not know what it was to be district. they did not see sejanus plinth, heir to the plinth fortune. they saw a district rat, a nameless, faceless traitor to kill. it is no surprise that coriolanus snow climbed to the top on the back of sejanus plinth tragic ending, because that's simply what happens every day.

i do understand and don't absolutely hate the conversations people have surrounding sejanus' privilege and what he chose to do with it/ what he chose not to do, but i think to consider sejanus an annoying, selfish character is erroneous. he was a boy who knew that this system would never favor him and was trying his best to envision a world where it might, and yes he did make stupid rash decisions, but at the end of the day what killed him was coriolanus snow and snow's desire for power. sejanus plinth was not stupid for trusting coriolanus snow, either; coriolanus snow was evil for betraying the boy's trust for his own self-serving agenda.

it is hard to live in a world like this. even as a white woman with a mexican father, i have have had to experience the kind of things sejanus did with people talking poorly about him and his family behind his back, and openly to his face. i am not accepted by either side and never will be, just as he wasn't. i will say i do experience immense privilege because of the color of my skin, and i won't ever pretend that i don't know that, but that's what i'm talking about: no matter how much i look like them, and act like them, i will always be a mexican's daughter and i am happy about that fact. i am mexican as much as i am white but it doesn't make the fight i have to struggle because of it any more fun.

The first time i saw you i knew you were the one

It was cold October morning in Cloverfield. Everyone were getting for work or school. Suzanne was walking with her friends today. She was considered pretty but nerdy. She's always with her books and she's not interested in boys wich makes her less popular. James didn't think she was nerdy. To him she was everything that's beautiful. He loved her smile, pretty long hair, blue eyes and everything about her. To him she was perfect. Ever since he saw her in math class they were going to together he couldn't take his eyes off her. She looked so gorgeous and beautiful. If only there was a way to tell her how he feels. Well it's not like she was taken. Not anymore. He just couldn't bring himself to tell her how he feels. He always feels like he's going to make her cry and run away. Now he was staring again at her. She was laughing with her friends. James looked like he just got hit by love gone.

Tyler snapping fingers:James? Earth to James?

James confused:What?

Tyler:You're staring again at her. When is this going to stop man? Just talk to her.

James embarrassed:I can't! Im going to make fool out of myself!

Tyler annoyed:Whatever. See you dude.

James:See you.

James was sure what he's going to do.

Next day James walked over to Jill and asked what Suzanne likes the most. Jill told him that Suzanne liked horror movies and sharks. He went to the store and bought michael myers plushie, some halloween vhs tapes and more shark related stuff. He wrote small letter to Suzanne. After school ended James went to the park where him and Suzanne were supposed to meet. When Suzanne came out of class and opened her locker small letter fell out of her locker:

Dear Suzanne. I'm somone who truly loves you and even though you may not see it I truly believe that you deserve respect and love. Please read this letter and meet me in your favorite park at 5:00 o'clock.

You're truly lover.

Suzanne happily:Oh that's so sweet. I wonder who could possibly write something so poetic. I gotta go see him.

She rushed home to get ready and meet her mysterious lover. Oh how excited she was. She chossed pretty dress and did her makeup.

Suzanne sweetly to herself:Well don't you look nice?

She went downstairs and went out of the house. She walked down the street to the park. She loved this park so much. It was beautiful no matter what time if year it was. She got to the place where she was supposed to meet her lover. To her surprise it was most handsome boy in school. James Carter.

Suzanne shocked:You?

James:Yep me. Surprise.

Suzanne:But I don't understand. Why me? You could have any other girl but not me.

James:Suzanne. Ever since I saw you I could stop looking at you. You're so beautiful and smart and kind. I just know that I want to be with you no matter what.

Suzanne:James I don't know what to say but it's all so sweet.

James:Well now is difficult part.

James kneeled down and took Suzanne hand in his.

James:Suzanne Jones. Will you be my sweet girlfriend?

Suzanne happy:Yes! Yes I will!

James and Suzanne hugged each other happily. That was how beautiful relationship started.

thoughts from chapter 25-end

- i remember the whole showdown quite well so few thoughts from there. but katniss’ mercy itself was breaking the rule. for her to sympathise with her greatest enemy thus far, that’s against the capitol’s rules

- katniss’ instinct even out of the arena is to protect peeta

- the dissonance between katniss screaming for peeta and the capitol attendant offering her a drink is hilarious. as im sure suzanne meant it to be

- the way katniss stares at the gleaming cup of orange juice and decides it untrustworthy for being so “shiny and clean” has got to be foreshadowing for the hijacking right?

- but on a more thematic note it’s the capitol. the orange juice is a capitol

- “not in the capitol accent but the rougher cadences of home.” “a vague comforting feeling that someone is looking out for me.” ugh. this hits different now that we know (i’ve noticed) that it’s the appalachian accent she’s referring to

- they erased her scars not only from the arena but also from her hunting when she specifically wondered what of her person is left without her hunting oh my god even erasing the scars from the arena is erasing her victimhood

- this is where haymitch’s and katniss’ relationship truly begins. the way she runs to him for comfort. the way he is always looking out for her.

- when she realises the games aren’t over. when she realises they will never be over

- i also forgot they made the games into a stupid movie. yuck

and that’s all my thoughts for book 1

some of these are probably really obvious but i had to get them out i suppose

Immediately ran to you blog after the announcement you're literally my trusted blog about thg, mildly excited but wish it was something different or atleast not focused on haymitch whose already written perfectly well 😔😔

yeah my initial thought is i doubt it’ll focus on haymitch much since we already basically got that story in the flashback of cf. but yeah idk, im excited bc i love thg and i love suzanne but i guess i feel like as a fan i’m kind of like oh … well now we can’t speculate about that anymore. which as a fan and a fanfiction and analysis and speculation enjoyer is kind of like :/

idk like i just don’t see why we have to do it in panem!! leave them be!! give us a new universe!! or honestly id even respect it more if she went back to the underland instead!! i just feel cynical i suppose.

but why am i complaining. im obsessed with these books. ofc im going to eat it up

I feel like anyone who thinks Coryo is just a deranged monster who does bad things for funsies forgets that Suzanne hasnt ever written an entirely evil character in thg. Katniss herself has so many fucked up moments as wthe. Like when she literally tried to drown and kill Buttercup, Prim's cat, all while Prim was begging and pleading with her not to. Like the whole point is people are products of their environment and are trying to survive. EVERYONE is fucked up and has fucked up thoughts cause they are in a fucked up world where noone is really happy. I love how the book expands on the guilt alot of capital kids feel and the things they try to do to rebel, like one of his classmates starving herself cause her father cut food supply to the districts.

I feel like alot of people went into Tbosas expecting President Snow and so they had an inherit block to see him as anything but purely evil instead of taking a moment to understand where his desperation for his own survival comes from.

Having a reason behind an action does not equal to providing an excuse, and a lot of the people in the Fandom don't realize that. You can acknowledge why something was done and still understand that that something is bad.

you said this so much better thank you🫶and I think Suzanne plays around a lot with the whole nature/nurture argument in all of the hg books as well as like what makes a human, human.

I think Tom also mentioned it in interviews but he was like talking about the heartbreak of seeing Coryo become who he becomes and im like !!! Thats it!!! It’s heartbreaking because you can root for him and see the opportunities of goodness in him but then it just takes that all away the more actions he takes.

Like smth else I saw that was weird to me was that it was harder to sympathize with him in the book? Which I think the opposite I think it’s much easier to do so in the book compared to the movie because we’re given so much more context on him. And idk, I feel like as someone with anxiety, it’s very easy to relate to that part of Coryo.

Also I think this might change as the book goes on, but like im also over the Coryo never loved Lucy Gray stuff and only wanted to own her. I think in the beginning at least, he does make comments that suggest he has an ownership but that’s also contradicting SO many of his other thoughts about her that are not about ownership AT all. And again maybe this (probably) changes as the book goes on but I hate this being used as a reason he didn’t love her in some capacity, at least in the beginning.

So ive been trying to note writing styles as i read lately, to learn maybe how to improve the way i write to more of the result id like to have and also to notice what i like or dislike. What ive liked so far:

im not the only writer in the world who changes fucking tense so my inner-critique should shut the fuck up please, many authors exposition dump or do a quick tell sentence for unimportant quick transitions and frankly both these techniques work well and serve functions (examples i read recently: priest gives a lot of exposition actually, meanwhile brom gives less and may write more like me and both approaches i Enjoy, In The Dark's author does quick Tell sentences to move the investiagtion since evidence collecting and traveling To case ijterest points isnt ncessarily the focus - the scenes AT those locations and scenes figuring Out those clues are more key...and i realize many mystery plot novels and shows do this to move the pace better and focus on the most important scenes), i realized some authors do rely heavily primarily on just Dialogue-Action information and little else (which in my head for my own writing i guess i had thought i could only do for plot outlines not actual full scene writing) and some do give exposition or inner world reflection but only in key instances (Observations by janon does this minimal inner reflection then used for impact more in certain moments and does it Well, versus Murakami who i love who... extensively uses inner world perception and thoughts and that definitely reflects in how often i similarly fall into doing it).

I realized some authors do creative weird shit where grammar breaks, quotes and references to other stories are used, where the entire scene becomes purposefully cojfusing and prose practically turns into poetry in how Feeling suddenly takes over as the goal of the writing instead of clarity. Again Observations does this (with some beautiful moments and quotes), and Murakami loves doing this shit sometimes (and i love doing this too but often reign myself in out of worry im doing Too Much rule breaking). Theres authors like Suzanne Collins that write in present tense (i love present tense), theres ursula le guin who utilizes em dashes and i probably got my sentence style from her long ago, i like stephen kings descriptions a lot (and to a degree i hope i try for similar things).

Ive realized that while i miss how concisely i wrote a decade ago, compared to my long winding chapters now, and i admire writers who stick to primarily dialogue-action cause wow i wish i could it looks easier... i also would like to try putting more exposition in since some of my favorite writers do it more than me. And i realize i like my particular way of describing things in stories. Sure, just action setting descriptions would be easier. But like... im still not sure where i picked up the way i describe stuff. But i like how i do. (My guess is maybe Murakami or stephen king but i am not quite sure to be honest).

These bits are rough and im probably going to do sigmificant changes one day in editing. But i quite liked these bits of my writing ive done recently:

Khan's eyes are like two golden suns, burning through the hesitant guard, as if to consume. / Maybe Khan had always known. As he sat there, crumbling into the wooden floor, his face sinking lower and lower as it grew damp. / "I'm sorry," Misery had said, in the end. Over and over / Danny's in the water, fumbling deeper and deeper and resolutely ignoring the coldness seeping in, as the boys at the shore laugh and shout words he's no longer hearing. / The blossoms were frosting now, as she'd expected. Little specks of white glazed across them. Like the white scales of the god Tajin, the white knuckles of the man beside her as he kept himself from shattering the stone ledge against his palms.
