A city of brick, a city of marble.
I finally built the shell of the Mamertine Prison. I moved and embellished two of the insulae and moved them to the foot of the Capitoline hill. Also, I built a smaller version of the Porticus Deorum Consentium.
This basically begins the first of the actual street scenes leading into the city center and creates a very big contrast between the Augustan Forum in its splendor and the blighted lives of the Empire’s working classes. My next task is to sculpt and landscape the Capitoline hill then work my way outward to the other geographic features.

Myths, nation- and identity building are really fascinating because one thing I noticed in Europe is that no matter what kind you contact you had with the Roman Empire people are using it to build identity. "The Romans came here and here are some Roman buildings and roads and the name of this place is Latin in origin :D" vs "The Romans never conquered us in fact we absolutely beat the shit out of them :D"
#never of them is more correct or better than the other#and it's all always tied to myths and the imagined nation#because even if the roads and battles were real the identity building coming from it is always in some way ahistorical#so it ends up being just a little amusing that somehow so many places take pride in both having some Roman roots and having no Roman roots#macks musings#nation building#myths

do you think jason grace ever thinks about how new rome and, as an extension of it, the empire of the US perpetuates the same power imbalances/power hoarding and inequity that the old Roman Empire did and do you think he ever gets angry about how he was raised in that system to the extent that it is impossible to look at Neo-Classical New England buildings without his blood boiling? do you think he and annabeth share haunting feelings about the architecture of government buildings that were designed to emulate temples for gods that are just as fucked up and selfish as humans with too much power and control can be? does it give them chills, knowing the founding fathers were demigods, and that history is a cycle?
#if anyone answers with “probably not bc he's dead” ur gonna next. btw.#I say this as a haunted architecture major. the way we use the same building designs to continue to tell people they do or do not belong#the same precedents as the fucking ROMAN EMPIRE is insane#jason grace#annabeth chase#percy jackson#heroes of olympus#camp jupiter#camp jupiter crit#tbh

Nicola Pellati's House, Strevi, Piemonte, Italy,
This charming villa was built in the early 1600s when it served as the private residence of a prominent local bishop. It was later acquired by the family of Nicola Pellati, an architect and geologist who was among the most respected luminaries in his field during the 1800s.

The city of Rome as depicted in Latium so far, There are 18 lots that have been built up from the outside, plus another 6 lots that are empty and a previous build that hasn’t been added yet, for a total of 25 lots.
The districts shown are the Capitoline, the Forum (and the first of the build’s 2 Imperial Fora), and Subura.
The Capitoline Hill has been sculpted and will receive a few more edits (terrain paints and routing, more buildings, rocks and foliage) to complete it. As for the forum, only the Regia, residence of the Pontifex Maximus, hasn’t been built yet. With the right amount of lots, this place could look convincingly like the Eternal City in its heyday under Augustus and his dynasty, even if it’s in actuality several times smaller.

some scribbling for the spartacus comic! just setting some scenes, figuring out some panel layouts, staring at the roman cast for the capua era and going ‘oh god none of you (aside from lentulus. obviously) have names yet.’

#Spartacus tag#calamus shows up as a pov character when we get to the Roman response and I’m sooooo excited for it#komiks tag#drawing tag#I’m also halfway through designing looks for the rest of the names crew (gannicus etc etc) so the ball is finally rolling#the ball being my ability to draw action sequences (i built a reference folder after putting it off for a year)#the hardest part of comics is building a useable reference library ngl
