~*It’s time for: Headcanon Time | Guest Staring: @pieman1112 ~
//This is going to be a long headcanon post but I wanted to give a little more context about Josephine's dream of being a Bow Knight. Since Shadows of Valentia is a remake of FE2 Gaiden, In the game Bow Knights are a male only class, while Pegasus Knight is a female only class. Which to me honestly is weird and makes no sense. In future games there many more women that can become archers and also bow knights and it took Fates to make the first male Pegasus Knight which was a long time coming.
So in this head canon, as a child Josephine wanted to be just like her dear grandfather Reginald the first. During his time in the military, he was a Bow Knight but also could become a Myrimidon, a sword unit, if there was a need for him to do so in battle. So when his youngest granddaughter asked if she could learn how to use a bow as well, he was more than honored to teach her everything he knew. His former military colleagues would tell him that he shouldn't teach her that. He would simply laugh and tell them, "If she want to use the bow to fight then so be it! She's my granddaughter after all!"
It was not easy at first to shoot an arrow while on a horse but with practice and her grandfather's guidance she managed to do so. When she was around 13 years old, it was her time to start her military training in the Rigelian army. Her grandfather had unfortunately passed away when she was 10 years old so he never got the chance to see her in her armor. Since Josephine had experience riding horses, it was easy for her to become a Cavalier and she did get used to using a lance, but when she asked about reclassing her to a Bow Knight, her grandfather's old colleagues refused to promote her to that unit. However, they did agree that she was skillful with a horse and had potential just like her grandfather. So they instead encouraged her to become a Paladin. All she really could do was customize her armor to look as close to a Bow Knight's armor but not make it too obvious for her peers to notice.
As a teenager, the Emperor Rudolf and those were close to him were intimating so she never brought up her wanting to be a Bow Knight to him. She mostly was on patrols near where she lived and sometimes fought terrors and monsters for the most part. When she turned 18, she had the choice of staying in the army and be promoted to Paladin or go back to being a boring noble woman to 'prepare for marriage'. She picked the latter option as she realized she would never get to be a Bow Knight while the old military order was still around. So she gave up on her dream believing that no one in Valentia would ever think that a woman could be a Bow Knight. She never spoke about her time in the military to anyone except to Berkut. The only reason he knows is because he found Josephine's military records when he was making sure she would be good friend for Rinea and was confused why someone with high marks would suddenly leave. She had told him that it was better for her family if she married a higher noble in the future and she enjoyed being in Rinea's company. "That does explain why you were able to fight back those assassins with a lance with ease. It is a shame really, you would have been an excellent Paladin for my army. Should you ever change you mind, I can have that arranged. I am the crown prince after all." Is what Berkut told her. He did however make her a secret bodyguard for Rinea but would be a 'lady in waiting' or some sorts in public. Josephine agreed to this and as order she never told Rinea the truth about it but Rinea figured it out easily since Josephine helped her get away from any fighting close by and had seen her fight before.
Perhaps due to Alm and Celica being much more open with changes, Josephine feels like perhaps she might be able to become a Bow Knight or at least have other girls like her be able to become archers. She has yet to tell her Hunter (or any beloved that could have had) about her military days since they are not the happiness moments in her life but he will find out soon enough. It will certainly be a huge surprise to everyone when she does show off in a battle the same skills that Bow Knights have.

✦ —— thought abt how if the heroes retain their memories of what happened in askr even when they’re sent back, how seeing duma!celica would probably be a big step in deterring berkut from carrying through with his sacrifice in act 5. the mindlessness and almost helpless quality to her voice at times would at least make him falter, thinking much more seriously how much more pathetic he might seem after he’s thrown his life away and that he should at least retain some of his pride
ofc the absolute biggest thing would be if they ever release witch rinea into fe:h and he becomes (mood: Regret.jpeg)
#// like I mean I know he reacted with like favor even after they were both sacrificed but I assume that's not smth to stick to#// I also just think berkut should be the party that regrets more of that event than rinea ngl she did fucking nothing wrong#// also having a regretful berkut parallels my fe2 regretful alm so =)#// good end for berkut rinea and fernand only achievable by askr#✦ | ooc.

Dame’s thoughts on FE15 - the Bad
While I found FE15 an enjoyable game overall, it's not perfect. The enemy unit AI is pretty wonky and dumb compared to what FE14's demonstrated, can always be broken with summons. The maps are simple, along with their objectives. Some of the best supports are behind a DLC paywall which I am not a fan of. I enjoyed SoV's plot quite a bit, right up until the Act 5 pulled some...things.
As for what I specifically disliked, detailed spoilers for the game, below the cut.
The overworld map, it's almost too free-roaming. I repeatedly skipped locations that contained recruitable units, simply cause I was unaware they were places to access. I honestly find it to be a design flaw, because players can easily miss playable units without doing something like killing them on the battlefield. Maybe I'm a stickler, but it really makes me miss the more linear/chronological FE games (along with that chapter narrator, bring that back!)
Despite the efforts in world-building, there's blatant contradictions. Finding food lying around everywhere in a supposed famine is silly. The nation struggling with low resources dedicates large tracks of land to vineyards, rather than wheat fields and making beer or something similar where you can EAT and store the crop in question. Conrad exists. How/why as the older brother doesn't he inherit the throne over younger sister Celica? Why couldn't he, as Zofian royalty, open the Sluice?
Already went into Mila and Duma’s retcon into crazy dragons here.
There's still a lot of sexism in the depiction of female characters. The epilogues across the board are almost entirely heterosexual marriage, often setting aside other occupations for that (let Delthea stay single dammit) Those CGs of Clair and Mathilda, their poses are solely for cheesecake and it's gross. Faye's entire personality isn't for her own sake (a girl preoccupied with love) but supposed to be a sort of joke centered on Alm, and she was newly created just for that. Similarly Rinea seems wholly concerned with Berkut, and is a female character added to suffer at the hands of her man. The goddess is off-screen defeated and rendered largely useless, then her body is off-handedly destroyed. The female protagonist turns into a damsel-in-distress in possibly the worst way, and isn't able to deliver a killing blow to the final boss.
A huge problem I had with the writing in Celica's route in later Acts can be summed up with three words: lack of agency. Post-Alm-argument all of a sudden men come out of the woodwork to not only tell us her decisions are wrong, but give explicit direction of what Celica should do: whether Jedah and his soul deals or Conrad and his tiara of authority. Suddenly her close childhood friends who she trusted to keep her entire identity a secret, couldn't be told about a blue-man and his bonkers plan to revive Duma (not even Mila). Heck, she trusts said blue-man to ensure the survival of said friends when there's been multiple maps he's gone out of his way to try and kill them all. Jedah suddenly becoming the crux of Celica's inner conflict and motivation when everyone and their dog know he's not to be trusted, was badly done enough that it soured the end of my playthrough. This directly contrasts with the start of Celica's journey, where she's the one who chooses to set of on her pilgrimage, bargains with a mercenary, goes out of her way to battle monsters and pirates, trusting in her friends and allies strength to help her in these mission. Even her disagreement with Alm is Celica expressing her own opinion and not simply going along with what the male protagonist wants, it's a conflict that can show agency (which unfortunately can be negated if/when she's "proven wrong"). FE2 might have all the problematic building blocks, like how all Alm's original female teammates have to be rescued. In Celica's case I could stomach her making bad decisions and suffering the consequences alongside her army, over her doing so because one dude or another told her to do it. And wow, I really would've rather never watched a scene where alone-and-cornered Celica screams "no" while the blue-man has his way with her (soul sucking) and then magically healing via penetration with a phallic object (stabbed with a sword).
Also that on-screen facial slap from Conrad. Considering FE14′s localization edited out Ryoma slapping Shiro, I can’t decide if it’s a double standard that Celica can be slapped because she’s a woman... or is 8-4 simply was more faithful to sticking to the script. Either way, hard to overlook.
I’m salty over the later points, but wasn’t nearly so disappointed with the game compared to FE14′s wasted potential. If you need a cleanser, remember the SoV stuff I did like.

FE15?
As minor baddies go Slayde has no redeeming qualities. He’s a sadist who enjoys the prospect of killing kids.
As major league baddies go Jedah was awful in FE2 and this did not give him any mitigation. Worst Father Ever?
As ‘what the hell were the writers thinking?’ go Rinea and Mask Dude piss me off to the point no amount of fanfic or meta redeems them.
