@jinkx-monswoon glad you asked buddo 💖 ! drag history lesson time👨‍🏫
rebecca glasscock (us season 1 finalist and mm, next) quit drag uhh. idk when but it was quite a while ago - long enough ago that the reunion of all the s1 queens at the s10 finale was like, a huge dip back into drag for her
she is also a fantastic example of the “mall drag” that permeates in the early seasons, something you’d NEVER see on the main stage nowadays (lest we forget uk2’s h&mgate). it’s the same type of thing as like, dida ritz’s entrance look, and it’s so silly (but an important part of drag and its history !)
and then you have princess poppy, who has kinda been half off the grid since her elimination 12 years ago. word in the unverified youtube comment sections is that she was planning to quit drag for a while and drag race was kind of a last hurrah for her, but fuck knows the validity of that. regardless, either because she’s actually quitting drag or just because of the many rumours of it (haven’t watched the reunion yet 🇬🇧couldnt possibly know which), she decided to parody the outaded fashions of ms. glasscock while drawing that parallel.
yes i explained the joke and WHAT

💫mall drag💫
aka: charly gets autistic wid it
Rebecca Glasscock sauntered into that workroom on season 1, among the likes of Ongina’s one of a kind fashion, Shannel’s coosstumeees, Jade Sotomayor’s immaculate ‘female impersonation’, BeBe’s polish, and Nina Flowers’ everything - wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and a plastic wig.
and that is fucking GREAT.
drag needs no budget. drag needs no production value. what matters only with drag is the joy you get from it; while the artistry, the expression, the triumph of a Manila elegance after dark or a Violet s8 finale look, are all significant in their own rights, in my humble little opinion, the queer joy of drag is most important.
and throwing on a cheap wig, and a couple clothes straight out the closet, or from the women’s section of primark, experimenting with makeup and coming out a little wonky - all of that, to me, is magic. i hear stories about first times in drag, charity shop dresses and hard front wigs, and it makes my heart sing. it’s easy, it’s accessible to everyone. as queer joy should be. as all joy should be.
when DiDa Ritz trots into the workroom in a shitty wig and some street clothes and no makeup, it’s funny. but the way she has all the confidence in the world as she does it - girl, that’s the magic of drag.
so, if you’re looking to get into that art, don’t let the beautiful, high budget custom made couture on the runway deter you. it can be so, so simple to feel like a queen, a king, or whatever in between or outside or none of the above.
