Understanding Lenegres Disease: An Emerging Threat To Global Businesses
Tumblr media
Lenegres Disease is caused by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria commonly found in soil and water. The bacteria can contaminate foods and enter the human body through ingestion of contaminated foods. Raw vegetables, soft cheese made from unpasteurized milk, deli meats, and smoked seafood have often been linked to Listeria outbreaks. Those at higher risk include pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get infected. The risk is further increased for pregnant Hispanic women and pregnant women over 30 years of age.
Symptoms And Diagnosis
For healthy individuals, Listeria infection may cause short-term symptoms like fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhoea. However, in at-risk groups it can cause more serious conditions like sepsis, meningitis (infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and even death. Pregnant women typically experience only flu-like symptoms but the bacteria can pass to the fetus resulting in stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Diagnosis is done through laboratory tests of blood or cerebrospinal fluid to detect Listeria bacteria or nucleic acid.
Financial Impact On Businesses
Listeriosis outbreaks have serious financial implications for food businesses. A multi-state outbreak in 2018 linked to contaminated packaged salads from Bickford Foods Inc. led to hospitalization of 23 people across 11 states and 4 fatalities. The company incurred huge costs in product recalls and legal settlements with victims. Listeria outbreaks damage company reputation and brands. For example, Cantaloupe-associated outbreak in 2011 killed 33 people across 28 states and cost Jensen Farms millions of dollars in lawsuits and loss of  share. Contaminated food products from major brands like Dole and Blue Bell Creameries have also triggered multi-million dollar recalls and losses over the years. With public attention to food safety increasing, even a single confirmed case of listeriosis linked to a company's products can be financially devastating.
Government Regulations And Compliance
Government regulatory agencies across countries have stringent rules and standards to prevent Listeria contamination in foods. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration oversees implementation of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems by food businesses. HACCP is a preventive approach that identifies and monitors food safety hazards. Regular environmental testing, targeted testing of high-risk foods and validation of cleaning and sanitizing processes are key components of HACCP. Government agencies also investigate Lenegres Disease cases to identify food sources and prevent future outbreaks through traceability of contaminated products. Non-compliance with food safety rules can attract hefty penalties and even plant shutdowns. Companies have to demonstrate scientifically valid control measures to ensure products remain Listeria-free before and after processing.
Impact On Global Trade
Listeriosis outbreaks in one region or country can negatively impact trade of associated food products globally. For example, Mexican cantaloupes were banned from entering the U.S.  for over a year following the 2011 deadly outbreak. Similarly, imports of soft cheeses from Europe are often restricted during periods of increased listeriosis activity within the trading region. Cross-contamination during multi-nation supply chains also pose risks. A 2019 Canadian outbreak was traced to contaminated smoked salmon from Poland processed by a third-party supplier. Such disruptions strain supply consistency and increase business costs. International food safety standards and transparency in traceback become critical to maintain global commerce of high-risk commodities. Stakeholders also demand active cooperation between trading partners on surveillance, early detection of outbreaks and coordinated product recalls.
Mitigation Strategies
Proactive mitigation strategies are essential for businesses to address Listeria risks. These include environmental monitoring programs for facilities, validation of cleaning and sanitation procedures through microbiological testing, routine inspection and validation of raw material suppliers, and supplier audit programs. High-risk foods like ready-to-eat deli meats and cheeses should have post-lethality controls like antimicrobial treatments, high-pressure processing or irradiation to eliminate any potential post-processing contamination. Traceability systems and proper labeling is critical for effective product recalls. Employee health and hygiene training along with plans for immediate corrective actions in event of positive findings are also important risk controls. Adopting advanced technologies like whole genome sequencing for faster source attribution during outbreak investigations can help minimize the impacts. Food businesses need to make listeriosis prevention an ongoing organizational priority for sustainable operations.
Lenegres Disease poses a serious emerging disease threat that can no longer be ignored by global food industries. Rigorous science-based controls integrated at all stages from farming to consumption are vital to curb the rising health, financial and trade-related costs of this under-recognized pathogen. A collaborative and transparent approach between regulatory agencies,  stakeholders and consumers will be instrumental in strengthening overall food safety and public health.

Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal give raw, sublimely devastating performances of quiet intensity in Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, an aching exploration of solitude, artistic creation, memory, and the ghosts of long-gone family members. The writer-director of Weekend (2011) and 45 Years (2015) adapts Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel, Strangers, but instead of a straightforward book-to-screen translation, he draws from somewhere profoundly personal. In a resounding performance, Scott stars a screenwriter who ruminates on the loss of his parents for his latest project, and the character shares more than a few qualities with Haigh as a fortysomething queer filmmaker. Rooted in unhealed emotions and situations that could register as clichés in another filmmaker’s hands, Haigh’s greatest achievement here might be the casting, giving the stars of TV’s Fleabag and last year’s Aftersun, respectively, another showcase for their incredible talent. The material may have a familiar bent, recalling A Ghost Story (2017) at times, but its effect is overwhelming.
Scott plays the contemplative Adam, who lives in a London high-rise, one of the only tenants in a newly constructed building. Laboring over his latest screenplay that explores his childhood in 1987, the year his parents died in a car accident, Adam rummages through the artifacts of his past—reruns of Top of the Pops and a bin of old belongings. He also takes day trips by train to his childhood home in rural England, visiting familiar spots from his past. While there, his father (Jamie Bell) spots him and gestures to follow. At first, it’s not entirely clear that Adam’s parents have died, or whether or not what we’re seeing is real. But Adam visits his childhood home, having been absent for many years now, and finds his mother (Claire Foy) overjoyed to see him in disorienting yet curiously cozy scenes. Looking in on his late parents in this way, Adam can have conversations that he never could in life. He comes out to his mother, and her response (“What parent wants to think that about their child?”) flattens him. But when he confronts his father—whom Adam has lived longer than—about a particular parenting choice, the reaction isn’t what he expected.
At the same time, Adam meets Harry (Mescal), who drunkenly knocks on Adam’s apartment door after they spot each other through the window. Although Adam initially turns down Harry’s forward advance, they share a solitude that soon prompts Adam to start a romance with his neighbor from a few stories down. What begins with an erotic exchange of pot and sexual openness evolves into the two men bonding over their pain, from discussing their experiences growing up gay, to their preferences between the labels “queer” or “gay,” to their relationships with their parents. As a writer, Adam confronts his parents’ deaths in ways he seemingly never has before, while Harry’s pain is less specific and contained inside, yet no less familiar. Harry attempts to disguise his damaged persona, covering up his isolation and ache with substances and his immersion in their new relationship. But with Harry’s lines such as “I know how easy it can be to stop caring about yourself,” Mescale makes the character’s pain palpable.
Even though it’s an open-wound-of-a-film, Haigh lends a dreamlike, at times even Lynchian quality to All of Us Strangers. Adam’s trips home register as the mental work of a writer exploring his past, suggesting that perhaps those train rides to his childhood home occur in his head. “Memory train?” I scribbled in my notes. When Adam is drawn further into Harry’s orbit, their romance grows. They visit a club and lose themselves in ketamine—a mind-splitting experience for Adam, recalling scenes of fractured transition in Lost Highway (1997). Along with his interest in Adam’s unambiguous queer identity, and how acceptance of such identities have changed between 1987 and 2023, Haigh embraces the protagonist’s subconscious ambiguity, submerging Adam and the viewer into ethereal but emotionally concentrated scenes of long-overdue reconciliation. Adam’s meeting with his parents in a shopping mall chain restaurant is an unlikely spot for a final visit, but it’s so honest that anywhere less specific may have felt self-consciously arty.
Visually, the film unfolds with an astral, otherworldly quality thanks to cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay’s lensing on 35mm film stock. An early scene of Adam regarding the horizon out of his apartment window looks phantasmagoric, with the blue sky set afire by the sunrise, drawing a vital haziness and uncertainty in the film grain. Haigh and editor Jonathan Alberts create a fluid visual rhythm with scenes that don’t follow a beginning, middle, and end structure. Instead, they seem to overlap in imperceptible ways, echoed by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch’s score that resists melody in favor of a soundscape. Even the choices on the soundtrack—including nostalgic hits from Fine Young Cannibals and The Housemartins, and a particularly heartbreaking use of the Pet Shop Boys’ cover of “Always On My Mind”—have an indie inflection, tinged with the same sadness and delicacy that pervades the film. Haigh’s rather metaphysical mise-en-scène is so intricate, and its spellcasting so absolute, that one may be too mesmerized to notice he puts just as much thought into the filmmaking as the emotional tenderness.
If All of Us Strangers feels elusive or between states of being, that’s an intentional choice by Haigh, whose portrait of Adam’s loneliness, writerly sensibilities, and queer life put him not at odds with but outside of normal space and time—into a headspace that is distinct and somewhat removed but also at home within that distance. Haigh captures this not only in formal choices but also in his storytelling structure. When Adam attempts to bring Harry into his ghost world, Haigh challenges our understanding of what is real and what is imagined. How much takes place in Adam’s head? Are the ghosts real, or is Adam’s imagination conjuring them for some deeper psychological need? These questions are further complicated by the ending, which lends itself to interpretation—a rewarding debate, and one I had with several fellow critics. I’m not sure the reveal works in terms of story logic, but like all aspects of the film, Haigh takes what might have been a twisty, gimmicky conclusion, and turns it into something resounding and poignant.
Haigh seems to say what we perceive becomes our reality, even if our perceptions are rooted in memories and ghosts, or projections of ghosts. However, when we spend too much time inside an illusory mindset dependent on the past, those memories can destabilize our present and future. Haigh never resorts to cheap tricks to explore these ideas. Every moment, no matter how small, feels intimate, personal, and specific—devoid of the winking or mawkish irony that another filmmaker might be tempted to apply (see A Ghost Story). The final moments may seem almost sentimental, with their starry deployment of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”—bound to be a divisive, confounding sequence for many—but there’s an overwhelming personal quality to every choice in All of Us Strangers that registers as genuine and feeling, even during its more abstract moments.'

The CCP’s Psychological Warfare
Based on my observation and in my view, the CCP’s Psychological Warfare is part of its Info-Warfare waged mostly on the western social media to indoctrinate, mislead, and propagate in a very deceit and hard to detect way and the result is stunning.
Let’s flash back to 2011 when the West wasn’t paying enough attention to the CCP’s eager to its global hegemony and so-called “rejuvenation” dream and the “corner overtaking”/弯道超车 strategy through the intellectual property infringement, Dr. Lu Xiaolin, a Chinese scientist in the US, published a paper saying “‘stealing’ great ideas, and applying them to a suitable and most desired situation... When one or more industries make breakthroughs in resolving their particular challenges or constraints, other industries could benefit by ‘stealing’ the best”, he even raised a question: “So why not steal more?” While readers at that time may have taken it as a joke, the article set the tone of the CCP’s intellectual property stealing strategy for the following decades.

As for the “corner overtaking”/弯道超车 strategy that corresponds to Mr. Ren Zhengfei(Huawei’s CEO)’s famous quote: “as long as the money is in place, a no-talent will become a talent”, I think the brazen wolf-like stealing behaviors presented in the T-Mobile v. Huawei case made a good example of the strategy.

As for other big favor the wife of Dr. Lu Xiaolin did for the CCP in the American territory, please refer to the blog below:
The CCP’s “Sink the Ship” Plan and The Thucydides Trap
A recent example comes from the joint-statement of Russia and China. While people may believe the statement that “ Russia needs a prosperous and stable China, and China needs a strong and successful Russia” is just a diplomatic cliché,
Tumblr media
(https://www.china-briefing.com/news/the-putin-xi-summit-their-joint-statement-and-analysis/)
an article published on a CCP mouthpiece website “红歌会”, dated April 18, 2023 gives the true meaning behind the words: no military aid to Russia is the only exception and China is doing everything else to help Russia. If you want to dismember and destroy Russia, you step on China’s bottom line.
Tumblr media

https://twitter.com/expose_ccp2023V/status/1651767450315247617
Further explanation given by a CCP warrior on March 23, 2023 in a Twitter Space says that “China does not need to provide weapons to Russia, except raw materials. Russia’s own capacity is sufficient, as long as they keep their machines working. China provides Russia with production chain supply for military products and daily necessities...” It’s not an odd or personal opinion but the true voice of the CCP, I believe.  You may find the original voice from 2:39 of the video below:
https://rumble.com/v2h4hyk-exclusive-report-its-worse-than-you-think-the-ccps-weaponizing-the-west....html
If you still believe this is just a “co-incident”, please check another “co-incident” between the CCP warrior @cbl2008hx8964 (likely associated with @BL90942512 , a Twitter influencer doing many favors for the CCP )and Mr. Lu Shaye,  Chinese Ambassador to France:
https://twitter.com/expose_ccp2023V/status/1650520591458344960
As you can see, the important message is sent in a hilarious or cliché way, some times mixed with false information, so that you wouldn’t pay attention to it until you wake up and find it’s too late.
What I found disturbing is that the CCP may have started the Psychological Warfare in the West long time ago. Beside the effort to infiltrate into almost every pro-democracy or anti-CCP associations/groups, evidence shows that the CCP started to control who can go abroad long time ago, slowly changing the structure of the over-sea Chinese population to ensure the basis of the CCP's United Front. The CCP knew what kind of applicants can easily get their asylum application passed: Christians, Falun gong practitioners, Uyghurs, LGBT people, HongKongers, etc. and they developed a system and channels cross China and the western countries to send CCP warriors under those cloaks with all faked materials. Here is what I heard in Twitter Spaces: a man came to the US from Xinjiang in around 2020 and got his legal status very quickly via the asylum program. He said he was in prison in Xinjiang but he also revealed that he had constantly visited a Youtuber's live streaming shows while he was in China. To many people’s knowledge, for ordinary people, access western social media like YouTube or Twitter will risk being criminally charged in China but he seemed having no such problem and he was allegedly in prison. Further more, he quickly got a security guard job in the US. While having lots of time on Twitter, his account is associated with many CCP-proxy-acting people. So I am wondering his experience in a prison of Xinjiang was as a prisoner or a prison guard? Did he lie to the American authority? If he was able to access YouTube when he was in China, what may be his mission to the US?
Due to the training mechanism of the PLA, Police and the Ministry of State Security(MSS) , their staff members or family members are believed to have better loyalty to the CCP but the lack of professional background becomes their major challenge to go abroad through the normal immigration process. I was shocked by the majority proportion of the PLA or China’s Police background people who chat in Twitter Spaces day and night.
How did they come to the western countries?
In the following videos, you will hear how the American asylum system is being abused( from 6:32):
https://rumble.com/v2h4hyk-exclusive-report-its-worse-than-you-think-the-ccps-weaponizing-the-west....html
In another video (I will make it available as soon as possible), you will hear Jinyi S.B.( @dbysjwlblthztms ), Chinese-American acting as the CCP’s wolf-warrior on Twitter, mostly in Twitter Spaces, big-mouthed how to fake as Fa Lungong practitioner and get the legal status in the America. As per her own introduction, she was born in a family of a high-ranking officer of the PLA, came to the US and managed to marry to an American man. Her husband passed away of an unnatural death few years after their marriage. She recently passed the SSA’s interview, receives a generous retirement income benefited from her dead husband and planned to use these benefits to trade a man from China to have a new marriage. She specified that she prefer a PLA soldier. All of these sound reasonable until you connect the dots and see a pattern of sending PLA warriors to the America and maximizing the abuse of the American systems and resources.
Tumblr media
(https://twitter.com/dbysjwlblthztms/status/1651788333310447616)
Mr. David Clements once said in an interview that “in (American) universities, we got Confucius institutions. There is a reason why they use Confucius instead of Mao, because when you think of Confucius, you think of the fortune cookie, something that is innocent...” The result is that while the students and the authorities thought it was a pure language training, the students are being indoctrinated as to the wonders of the Communist China, a perfect result of the ideology warfare and of the psychological warfare.
Similar to this, I found many Twitter accounts appear to be pro-freedom advocates but their true cyber-behavior is to propagate the CCP’s wolf culture.  @Hydra_largHive, a Twitter account of which the profile bio says “ Liberate Hong Kong and fight against the CCP” liked a tweet posted “Those who offend our territorial waters fall into the sea. The US military broke into our South China Sea, when the helicopter landed, it rolled over and fell into the sea. Everyone forwarded and congratulated to each other!”
Tumblr media
(https://twitter.com/xxf58112/status/1650110982381789186)
A music account, @xsh860510, who used Teresa Teng (Taiwanese singer) as its bio photo, actually propagates the PLA arts.
Tumblr media
(https://twitter.com/xsh860510/status/1651531106750013440)
All is about the CCP’s cyber-warriors knew people usually check the account bio to find the standpoint and they fool people as always, plus, based on what I heard in Twitter Spaces, many of them use the false profile to fish real dissidents and collect their information to the CCP. For further information, you may click the blog below:
Twitter Spaces: A Window to Better Understand the CCP
One purpose of the CCP’s psychological warfare is to cover the true colors of the CCP’s agents, making it difficult for detectives to obtain evidence and meet the standards for prosecution. While foreign agent work is generally considered as the exclusive preserve of foreign nationals, the CCP tends to recruit/coerce/intimidate Chinese-Americans into this dirty work. From what I heard in Twitter Spaces, they believe that the US citizenship is the best shield of protection, because once they become US citizens, they will be entitled to all the privileges that the US government grants to their citizens and it’s almost realistically impossible to be deported.
Coco Resch, aka Qin Xiaoying, is one of the very wild CCP agent-acting warriors on Twitter, calling to kill people and to show loyalty to Xi government. What she brags often in Twitter Spaces is “I am an American citizen!”
https://twitter.com/expose_ccp2023V/status/1572609204212609024 https://twitter.com/expose_ccp2023V/status/1572677612765585413 https://twitter.com/expose_ccp2023V/status/1573340425561280512
Tumblr media
She was arrested on Dec. 4, 2022 for threatening a man in front of his house and live-streaming her threat. While she made real threats to people, other CCP warriors among her allies called her “crazy, with mental issues” to cover up the criminal nature of her actions. It reminds me of the assassination of Li Jinjin on March 14, 2022 by Xiaoning Zhang, in which case, in contrary to her “anti-CCP protester image”, she shouted out support for the CCP. Many CCP propagandists were spreading mental defect defense for her on Twitter and YouTube.

Here is my discovery in Li Jinjin’s case:
Tumblr media
https://rumble.com/vxqfsv-connect-the-dots-of-li-jinjins-assassination.html
Such a U-turn in position often happens to CCP agents, because it is their normal work to play a completely different face. In my experience, Coco Resch, aka Qin Xiaoying, Jinyi Song Brush and others, they all turned to their pro-CCP standing after they had approached me as “sympathy for dissidents”.
My exclusive video report:
Tumblr media
https://rumble.com/v2r0d3x-the-ccps-even-more-wild-illegal-agents-activities-on-twitter.html
On May 28, 2023, Coco Resch had @5FpezFASUxCIGaB to release her medical document proving that she had been temporarily held in a mental health center for 72 hours after she was arrested for threatening a person near his house.  @5FpezFASUxCIGaB also announced her trip to Europe which means she is now in good mental condition.
Tumblr media
https://twitter.com/5FpezFASUxCIGaB/status/1662976481474285568/photo/1
Coco Resch also liked @5FpezFASUxCIGaB’s tweet releasing her message to him, saying “Team leader Gao/高组长, if there is anything you need me to shout out, just tell me, I promise to accomplish missions.”
Tumblr media
https://twitter.com/5FpezFASUxCIGaB/status/1662982959484502016/photo/1
People may ask, why is she willing to disclose her alleged "mental disorder" medical file and promised to "accomplish missions"? Normal people wouldn’t do that. Here's the answer she posted by herself: she used the paper as a "certificate of insanity" and legal immunity for crimes like threatening and killing certain people that her boss may order her to eliminate.

Who is  @TreeNewbee2019?
He asked my photo from Coco Resch and released it without my consent. It violated Twitter’s rules, and yet, Twitter didn’t give him any effective punishment. Please click the link below to watch my video and find further details.

More important, the location that he gave in his profile is the address of the Public Security Bureau of Shanghai! Several indictment cases show that releasing personal information is a tactic often used by the CCP’s Transnational Police Operation Agents to intimidate dissidents and that is exactly what these CCP thugs did to me!

If we connect it with the fact that “at least one agent of China intelligence service on the payroll inside of Twitter”, we will know why  @TreeNewbee2019, representing the CCP’s police, didn’t get punished for his violation on Twitter.

For those who joined in or plan to join in the CCP’s Belt and Road Initiative, they may hear that the CCP’s “Major Country Diplomacy” is to assume a greater leadership role for global affairs, but what they don’t understand is the CCP’s controlling culture: offering you what you need and use it to control, manipulate, slave and intimidate you, you will never be able to talk with them with dignity but listen to them which in their words:“你就是我的一条狗/you’re one of my dogs”:

Why let an authoritarian regime to dominate the world is dangerous? Because they have no idea of respect, liberty, and the laws, what they mastered is to understand the human nature and developed a coercion strategy to control people.
When the CCP was amazing the world with its 5G and smart-city technology, they totally ignored people’s fundamental rights to argue and defend themselves over any legal issue. An Australian man who lives in Nanjing jaywalked, caught by the city’s facial recognition system, got a fine to his WeChat. Moreover, within 20 seconds, his money for the fine came straight out, without asking his consent or whatsoever. See the video below from 5:38

The CCP’s  Psychological Warfare targets not only the Western people, but also the CCP members and people of China to strengthen their loyalty to the CCP. PUA, a seduction science or study of charisma is widely used by many MSS cyber operatives.  Coco Resch, aka Qin Xiaoying, Chinese-American in Florida, has been threatening oversea Chinese people to show loyalty to Beijing: “To all of the oversea anti-Xi traitors, you are all being caught...... Hope you can make a plea agreement with Xi Jinping government.”

While she was acting as the CCP’s oversea police, she also claimed that she “was assisting” the FBI, that CBL( @BL90942512) is FBI’s "senior detective/高级探员" ,but in fact CBL’s Twitter activities are clearly in favor of the CCP, and that what she’s been doing is part of the co-operation between the FBI and the CCP, which is obvious non-sense.

If you think Coco Resch may be too stupid and that’s why she was bullshitting around, you’re wrong. In fact, many people who heard her conversation in Twitter Spaces concluded that her IQ is above the average.  So what made her to say things like “it’s impossible to ask CBL @BL90942512 to apologize to you, no way! You’re not only not entitled to ask his apology, you shall kneel down and beg his forgiveness! CBL is my spiritual leader, or soul mate, the one I love! I can hurt everyone just for him. I can break any promise or whatsoever, do anything for him.” See the video below from 1:35?

On March 7, 2023, a video posted by CBL revealed that Cheng Binlin, aka 成斌麟 @cbl2008hx8964 admitted that the twitter account CBL @BL90942512 is his account and he used that Twitter account to create a fictional character on Twitter.

Coco Resch made many private messages between her and CBL public, based on the information in the messages and what Yuan Jianbin revealed in the video below, as well as other evidence to prove the close relationship between Cheng Binlin and Yuan Jianbin, it’s reasonable to believe that they work as a team, used the CBL account PUA Coco Resch until she became a puppet to intimidate oversea Chinese people on the Internet while they walked away with impunity!

As the CCP mastered human nature, they torture the political prisoners not only physically but psychologically. Even if the CCP may release some of them under the pressure of international human rights organizations, they are “smart” to develop all possible means to make them “socially dead/社会死亡”, or live in a miserable condition that is not better than death.
When the COVID19 initially broke out in Wuhan and the city was shutdown, the CCP did everything to cover up the unprecedented lethal pandemic and the rest of the world could hardly learn the truth from China’s government. Fang Bin was a whistleblower hero just like Dr. Li Wenliang, reported what happened in Wuhan with his camera but he disappeared from the public in February 2020.
Tumblr media
He was recently released after 3 years in prison. His sentence was set in a secret trial. According to multiple sources on Twitter,
https://twitter.com/XIAOMIEHM/status/1653202497505222659
https://twitter.com/honglongtalking/status/1653987239096098818
he was escorted by Wuhan police to his son’s home in Beijing and then sent back to Wuhan by Beijing police. It seems that he is deemed as nuisance or burden and no local authority wants him within their jurisdiction. His sister in Wuhan must have been under the same pressure and wouldn’t willing to offer him shelter. Before his disappearance in February 2020, he was an entrepreneur and had a home in Wuhan, but the CCP made him a homeless person and no relatives are willing to take care of him. We don’t know what kind of torture Mr. Fang suffered in prison but we saw what the CCP is doing after his release: desperately isolating him from any social connection he may have, psychologically torturing him while he seems physically free, created a circumstance and push him to "socially die". By intimidating his relatives not to approach him, the CCP cut him off from his next-of-kin and other social connections. I believe the following tweet is the message that the CCP is trying to send out to intimidate other fighters: “Wake up, no matter Fang Bin/方斌, Xu Zhiyong/许志永, or Ding Jiaxi/丁家喜, their imprisonment will not cause any disturbance in the mainland of China. Even if their close family members, will not be proud of them, but be annoyed, ashamed and pissed off because of them”.
Tumblr media
https://twitter.com/honglongtalking/status/1653987239096098818
Another Tweet said: “using a ‘soft knife’ to cut Fang Bin slowly... goes after his relatives and friends, similar to the factional struggle in the upper echelons of the CCP, starting with the target’s surrounding people and eventually making Fang Bin “socially dead”, very insidious!”

I don’t know what distracted the West when the CCP started implementing its intellectual property theft strategy decades ago, here is what came to my attention: while we all admit that Hong Kong is no longer it was, particularly not a key international financial center any more, following the CCP's brutal suppression of Hong Kong Protests in 2019, many people didn't notice that the CCP has already aimed at “digital financial services”, crypto investments, restarting Hong Kong at a new level. AMTD Group @AMTDGroup is an example.  It follows only 4 accounts: its chairman Calvin Choi, Hong Kong SAR Government News, Hong Kong Govt Press Releases and NYSE that “connect to a world of opportunity”. Calvin Choi follows and is followed back by  Mario Nawfal  @MarioNawfal, Elon Musk’s buddy who is “host of Twitter’s Largest Spaces”. Beside hosting Twitter Spaces mostly on crypto investment, Nawfal also propagates in favor of Russia which “co-incidentally” consists with Elon Musk’s standing: “ a Russia-China alliance is inevitable. It will grow much stronger over time.”

Like “Made-In-China” became the icon of low-quality, CCP’s hands in the crypto business does not seem a good omen. Beside the mafia-alike murder reports below, I saw people saying that the crypto market in China is full of scam and mafia extortion.

The history of my video capture woes
(This post was originally released exclusively via Patreon on May 23, 2019, and is now here as a test for long-form text content! This post also contains links to old archived videos from my YouTube channel. Most of these videos were made when I was of a young age, and do not reflect the current quality of my videos or any of my views and opinions today.)
Everyone probably has that one system that shaped their childhood or teenage years. My childhood systems are the Wii and DS, but the 3DS is probably the most important and influential system I've ever had so far, both to my teenage years and for my YouTube hobby.
Since I got my very first 3DS on July 11th, 2011 (I THINK that was the date), I've been being to make videos with it on my then barebones YouTube channel.
I've captured game footage before this though, and it was...bad. Holding a camera up to a TV looks and sounds substantially worse than sticking it in front of a 3DS screen and speakers.
Tumblr media
My first 3DS related video was released on July 14th, 2011 and was just the QR Code of my Mii and my friend code. My Mii has barely changed since then (and tbh probably isn't the most accurate representation of me but I've gotten too used to it).
youtube
Also I'm pretty sure my 3DS friend list is already full so you probably don't need to try entering it, sorry
[Continued after the break!]
My first video that actually used footage from a 3DS is a gameplay video of Super Mario Bros. back when the 3DS Ambassador Program dropped:
youtube
I just balanced a small digital camera we had on a pencil sharpener as a support. I think I still have that camera, but it's probably buried in a closet somewhere with a dead battery I can't find the right charger for. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
At that point, I don't think I've even heard of the concept of capture cards yet. In 2011 they were still in the prototyping phase, and a few well-known YouTubers at that time (cobanermani456 comes to my mind just now) simply stuck HD cameras in front of 3DS screens to capture footage.
So with my dingy little digital camera, I couldn't really do much with the setup. Of course, at that time I was just holding my 3DS in front of the camera resulting in some shaky screen images (often also angled so I could see the screen clearly and my reflection wouldn't show) This lasted ALL THE WAY until September 2012. Oof.
Tumblr media
Around the end of 2011 I switched to a different camera which apparently made things worse because now my videos ended up in 240p. I have no idea what is up with that. That's also when Super Mario 3D Land came out which I played the hell out of and made some tips & tricks videos about (that was probably the niche of the early years of my channel if I had to describe that period.)
Check out this video for some sweet 240p-upscaled-to-480p goodness and the first semblance of game footage coupled with actual video editing.
youtube
Also at one point I tried capturing direct audio by using an aux cord but the headphone jack of the main computer I use for editing at the time was broken, so it didn't really end up well.
By August 2012 I figured out a way to stabilize my 3DS footage: stacking 3DS game boxes and putting my 3DS on top. Over the years I've used different other items to hold my 3DS up like smartphone boxes and stuff, but 3DS cases are pretty reliable. I think at that point I've also internalized how many 3DS game boxes to stack up in my mind like they're a unit of measurement. You can see this in action in one of my first videos on Pushmo:
youtube
By now you've probably noticed the wacky wave effect you get when you put an LCD in front of a low res camera. That'll stick around for a long time.
Anyway, this stuck around for a while as I pumped out some random NSMB2 videos and posted my first ever Let's Play of Super Mario 3D Land. In terms of video editing, 99% of the time I just uploaded the raw footage because the videos were fine without editing at the time.
I got a 3DS XL on around September 2012, but was still stacking it on top of game boxes and other stuff. It resulted in the screen placement never being consistent, but I was content with it at the time. Sometimes I also managed to capture both screens at once.
Tumblr media
Then came everyone's favorite game, Paper Mario: Sticker Star. I keep saying the game's an integral part of some of my channel's very early growth, because I churned out quite a few GameXplain-like tip videos about it, such as how to get the Barrel sticker (you have to get it exclusively from Broozer enemies that show up in some airship enemy encounters). Arguably my biggest 'hit' at that point came when I beat Bowser without using Kersti:
youtube
This video is super grainy looking because I was recording my 3DS XL screen with my 3DS cameras. I have no idea if my regular camera was out of commission or something but it happened. A bunch of people liked it.
At this point I'm just super used to this method of recording 3DS footage now. It was certainly a lot easier to set up, record and post videos more regularly, but looking back, it didn't really make my channel stand out too much. There isn't really any incentive to watch a guy stick a small camera in front of a 3DS for video guides over a professional Let's Player using capture cards.
Tumblr media
On March 28th 2013 I posted this video of some Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon footage in 1080p! I believe this footage was recorded with a smartphone that belonged to my parents at that time. The high quality was able to get rid of the wavy patterns on-screen but I never adopted it, either because it was too much a hassle to set up or I wouldn't always get access to it that easily.
I went back to my tried-and-true regular method and a bunch of people were asking me what I used to record footage. So I recorded this video with my 3DS:
youtube
Yeah I set my camera (a PowerShot S95) on an iPhone box and my 3DS XL on a dictionary. Those were the items that just happened to have the perfect height. Sometimes in life you gotta improvise.
In May 2013 I uploaded some stereoscopic 3D videos of 3DS games. This required...yes, putting the 3DS XL in front of a 3DS with the 3D effect on. (It wasn't the other way around because the 3DS screen was smaller and more suitable for recording purposes). It sorta worked, but y'know, low quality and everything. It was a neat idea though seeing as not a lot of stereoscopic 3D videos of 3DS games existed at that time.
youtube
I also tried direct audio recording again with another video!
I have no idea how I managed to get this to work, seeing as I record footage in my own room then edit the footage on the home computer in my living room outside, but I guess the method was to record the direct audio through a notebook computer situated next to me, then taking that audio and combining it through the camera footage on my home computer. It was probably too much work for me at that time.
Alright, it's fast-forward time, you've seen me do this recording setup for far too long now. 3 years to be exact.
In 2014, after watching Chuggaaconroy's Let's Play of Kid Icarus: Uprising, I picked up the game and it included a 3DS stand! I then tried to incorporate it into my recording setup so I would no longer have to memorize what specific combination of everyday household items I can use to prop my 3DS up. Here's the first video using it:
youtube
And then that's just what I basically used for the next 3 years as well. If it ain't broke (?), don't fix it.
Small interlude: We got a new camera during 2014, which is actually the one camera I still use today in core videos! [2022 editor's note: I've switched to a smartphone camera since.] In October, during a small event I did called Sakurai Month, I gave it a whirl in recording 3DS footage with a Kid Icarus: Uprising video.
Tumblr media
And it looked REALLY good! The downside is I had to use a tripod to stand the camera up, which took away a lot of space for me to sit and see the screen properly, plus I wasn't able to record the bottom screen due to size constraints, and (I'm not 100% sure if this was done for the KIU video, but) the audio recording on that camera is a bit crappy, so I had to use my regular digital camera alongside it just so I can get the best audio. Even now in my core videos, the voices for the off-screen footage is recorded with my smartphone voice recorder.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
But other than that, I've just used the ol' trusty PowerShot S95 for the rest of my 3DS videos. Occasionally I do some editing to get both screens at a decent size such as for my Smash 3DS videos, but that's about it.
Tumblr media
And yeah, I used this method all the way up to early 2017. By that time, I was finishing up my high school finals, and did some reorganization in the apartment. I've also started covering topics other than 3DS games, such as other Nintendo hardware like the Game Boy systems (and the Switch was on the horizon as well!) so I felt that the quality of those videos clashed a bit with videos where I stick a camera in front of a 3DS screen.
Still, I had a running LP series at the time (Rhythm Heaven Megamix), and I tried using the new camera I got to record some footage as well, but it just wasn't cutting it for me. I felt that using these high quality cameras to do more comprehensive videos like filming hardware shots and the like was a better idea than using it to just do what I did for the past 6 years.
And thus the idea of the core videos were born!
I also got a used Elgato Capture Card on October 2017, allowing me to grab footage from the Switch and even some older systems. But to think I was done covering the 3DS would be dead wrong, as there was still a lot of potential topics I wanted to cover for the 3DS, just in a more sophisticated manner instead of just pointing a camera at a screen.
This gave birth to ideas for videos such as 'How Super Mario 3D Land Saved The 3DS', but to make those videos a reality, I would either have to nab footage by other people from the Internet (which I generally try to avoid unless absolutely necessary), or use a homebrew-enabled New 3DS which had a method of recording gameplay footage to a PC application over Wi-Fi.
While that sounded reasonable, it wasn't the best solution, as the video was often very choppy and had a few visual artifacts depending on your connection speed. The best videos I could get out of it were around the 20-30fps range. You can see a sample of homebrew 3DS capturing in this tweet:
Tumblr media
But still, it was better than off-screen footage in my opinion, so I did my footage recording with homebrew and went on my merry way...
Then I learned that Katsukity, the sole provider of 3DS capture cards at that time (since Loopy had stopped orders) had a price drop.
Tumblr media
I took the hit and grabbed a 2DS from their store with a capture card pre-installed for 300 USD. Compared to using homebrew, using capture cards allowed for me to capture both a higher resolution and framerate, as well as allowing for capturing DS games (which isn't possible with homebrew). To sort of alleviate the cost, I sold the 2DS I had at the time to a real life friend who coincidentally didn't have a 3DS and wanted to get into its game library.
And since then, I think it's served me really well! Of course, as of this post there's really only like two core videos that are DS/3DS-focused, but there are still plenty of topics I want to talk about. The recent Photo Dojo video is also possibly the first ever non-Nintendo YouTube video about Photo Dojo in which footage was recorded with a capture card!
youtube
Tumblr media
It has its downsides, such as the direct audio capturing being a little wonky unless you use an audio cable (which would be a bit of a hassle with my current setup), but I feel like it will still be serving me for quite a few years to come. [2022 editor's note: still going strong!]
Since then, Katsukity has gone bankrupt (sadly unsurprising given the REALLY niche market of their products), and there isn't really a new source of 3DS capture cards at this time. Hopefully the resale values for them won't skyrocket like crazy, but if you're dead set on getting one no matter the cost, aside from second-hand listings, Merki (the European distributor for 3DS capture cards) still have old 3DS XL capture cards in stock, but you'll have to ship your system to them, so the shipping costs might add up.
But for creators who are starting out, if you want to make content using the 3DS, you can either go the homebrew capture route (if your 3DS is of the "New" variety) or just use a smartphone camera, since most can do at least 1080p nowadays. I mean, I got by with using a crappy camera for 6 years. :]
But anyway, hope this gave you a fun little insight into my history of struggling with capturing handheld footage! I think it's a nice example of equipment quality not being the most important thing for creators, even with simple tools and software, you can still make content that's pretty dang good. Even now, my setup is still evolving, and your support means I will be able to improve it through things such as better tripods and microphones, as well as more things of interest to cover, so I must thank you all once again!
If you have any further questions about footage capturing, don't hesitate to ask me. :)

A comparison of age adjusted all-cause mortality rates in England between vaccinated and unvaccinated
Norman Fenton and Martin Neil
The UK Government's own data does not support the claims made for vaccine effectiveness/safety.
In a previous post we argued that the most reliable long-term measure of Covid-19 vaccine effectiveness/safety is the age adjusted all-cause mortality rate. If, over a reasonably prolonged period, fewer vaccinated people die, from whatever cause, including Covid-19, than unvaccinated people then we could conclude that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks. We also pointed out that, to avoid the confounding effect of age, it is critical that data for each age category is available, rather than the aggregated data because, clearly, aggregated data might exaggerate vaccine mortality rates if more older people, with shorter expected mortality, are included. The UK roll out of the vaccine was executed in descending age order, from older to younger, except very early on in the vaccination programme when the vulnerable young were vaccinated along with the very elderly. As the programme progressed those vaccinated were, on average, older than those who remained unvaccinated and as the roll out proceeded a progressively higher proportion of the residual unvaccinated population are younger.
The latest Office for National Statistics report on mortality rates by Covid vaccination status provides data on all deaths – Covid related and non-Covid related for the period Jan-July 2021 for the unvaccinated and the different categories of vaccinated ('within 21 days of first dose', '21 days or more after first dose', 'second dose'). The ONS data for Covid-19 mortality, is given in Table 4 of the ONS spreadsheet and the ONS data for all-cause mortality excluding Covid-19, is given in Table 5 of the same spreadsheet. Both tables are reproduced at the bottom of this post.
We believe there are severe weaknesses and possible errors in the ONS data (see foonote**). But importantly, while it does not provide the raw age categorized data, it does provide "age standardized" mortality rates***. This means the ONS have calculated the overall mortality rate in a way which (they believe) adjusts for the confounding effect of age, and this is ‘baked into’ the mortality rates they have published.  However, while they report this age adjusted mortality rate for each of the three separate categories of vaccinated people they do not report it for the combined set of vaccinated people. In our analysis, and in the absence of the actual age stratified data, we compute a population weighted age adjusted all-cause mortality rate by using the ONS’s published population sizes for each of the three categories of vaccinated. This is not ideal because the ONS age adjusted rates are so opaque and are not 'abolute numbers'. However, in the absence of detailed data this should provide a reasonable estimate of what the ONS age adjusted all-cause mortality rate would be for all unvaccinated if they had bothered to report it. We will call this the ‘weighted vaccinated mortality rate’. The data table derived from the ONS data and used to compute this rate is given at the end of this post.
It turns out that, even using this age adjusted mortality rate, the death rate is currently higher among the vaccinated than the unvaccinated.
The age adjusted mortality rates for vaccinated against unvaccinated for weeks 1 to 26 of 2021 are charted below. Overall, the chart shows that, over time, the weighted mortality rate for the vaccinated has steadily increased and by week 16 (23 April 2021), surpassed that for the unvaccinated.
Week 1 ends 6 Jan 2021, Week 26 ends 2 July 2021
The chart suggests a normal seasonal mortality trend for the unvaccinated, with a winter peak on week 6, 12 February 2021, and a steady decline toward summer. In contrast, the pattern for the vaccinated is completely different. From week 24 onwards the mortality rates for the vaccinated and unvaccinated appear to be converging as summer begins.
As the ONS data breaks down the data over time for the three categories of vaccinated (those within 21 days of first dose, those 21 days after first dose, and those after two doses), we can also plot mortality charts for each of these categories. The mortality rate, for week 26, up to 2 July, for the unvaccinated is around 25 deaths per 100,000. But there are big differences between the mortality rates for the different categories of vaccinated deaths. For example, for those after 21 days of first dose, the comparable mortality is around 89 deaths per 100,000 people (a number which has drastically increased since January), while for those vaccinated with two doses there were approximately 15 deaths per 100,000 in the same July period.
The trends for the different vaccination categories are also concerning. In contrast to the unvaccinated, the mortality rates for the vaccinated have initially increased from very low initial values, but then have increased, whilst that for the unvaccinated has decreased. The charts below show these patterns.
Since 19 March the double dose vaccination mortality rate has increased week-on-week more or less consistently. The mortality rate for those more than 21 days after first dose increased drastically in the spring (at week 14) and remained high thereafter. Mortality within 21 days of vaccination initially increased but looks to have stabilised, albeit with some noise. We will leave it to clinical colleagues to explain why there are such different patterns.
Because of the limitations and possible errors in the ONS data**, there are many caveats that need to be applied to our crude analysis (including some which are covered in the previous post). But we can conclude that the ONS's own data does not support the claims made for vaccine effectiveness/safety.
It is also important to note that the population of vaccinated people is becoming sufficiently large and representative that the criticality of age adjustment becomes much diminished. We will be doing a follow-up analysis that takes account of this.
**Potential limitations and errors in the ONS data (with thanks to Clare Craig for identifying some of these)
Does not provide the raw age categorized data.
The age standardized score used by ONS relies on the 2011 census data to determine the population proportions in each age category. These proportions have changed since 2011 and, as we noted in this article, these differences can significantly change the results.
There are inconsistencies in vaccination numbers between the ONS data and the National Immunisation Management Service (NIMS) data.  For example, by week 26 NIMS has 28.1 million people over 18 who have had second does, but ONS has only 23.3 million.
The ONS total population is 16.6 million short of the whole population. Only 12.6 million are under 18 so the remaining 4 million are omitted for some other reason.
The rates in the unvaccinated on 8th Jan are lower than the double vaccinated in summer. Also, on 8th January only 12% of over 65 year olds had been vaccinated, so the unvaccinated population should have had a death rate very similar to background levels.
The wildly increasing weekly age adjusted mortality rates (for non-Covid related deaths) for the 38 million unvaccinated population in January are totally inconsistent with weekly changes in previous years. Although this population excludes the under 18s and the 1.2 million (mainly over 65s) who had by then recieved their first dose, we would not expect the mortality rate for this population to be drastically different to the mortality rate for England seen in recent years as reported in a different ONS report.
Ultimately we need to exclude unnatual deaths such as murders, accidents and suicides since these may introduce bias between the cohorts, especially in the young age categories where the overall death numbers are small.
Here is Table 4 data the raw data, for Covid-19 deaths, as provided by the ONS:
Here is Table 5 data the raw data, for all-cause deaths except for Covid-19, as provided by the ONS:
Finally, here is the data we used to calculate combined all-cause age adjusted mortality rates and the weighted vaccinated mortality rate.

Regulations About Defiling Skin Diseases
1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2 “When anyone has a swelling or a rash or a shiny spot on their skin that may be a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons who is a priest. 3 The priest is to examine the sore on the skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling skin disease. When the priest examines that person, he shall pronounce them ceremonially unclean. 4 If the shiny spot on the skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days. 5 On the seventh day the priest is to examine them, and if he sees that the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to isolate them for another seven days. 6 On the seventh day the priest is to examine them again, and if the sore has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a rash. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 7 But if the rash does spread in their skin after they have shown themselves to the priest to be pronounced clean, they must appear before the priest again. 8 The priest is to examine that person, and if the rash has spread in the skin, he shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease.
9 “When anyone has a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to the priest. 10 The priest is to examine them, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11 it is a chronic skin disease and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.
12 “If the disease breaks out all over their skin and, so far as the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the affected person from head to foot, 13 the priest is to examine them, and if the disease has covered their whole body, he shall pronounce them clean. Since it has all turned white, they are clean. 14 But whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean. 15 When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce them unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; they have a defiling disease. 16 If the raw flesh changes and turns white, they must go to the priest. 17 The priest is to examine them, and if the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the affected person clean; then they will be clean.
18 “When someone has a boil on their skin and it heals, 19 and in the place where the boil was, a white swelling or reddish-white spot appears, they must present themselves to the priest. 20 The priest is to examine it, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce that person unclean. It is a defiling skin disease that has broken out where the boil was. 21 But if, when the priest examines it, there is no white hair in it and it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 22 If it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling disease. 23 But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread, it is only a scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.
24 “When someone has a burn on their skin and a reddish-white or white spot appears in the raw flesh of the burn, 25 the priest is to examine the spot, and if the hair in it has turned white, and it appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 26 But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and if it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 27 On the seventh day the priest is to examine that person, and if it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 28 If, however, the spot is unchanged and has not spread in the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a scar from the burn.
29 “If a man or woman has a sore on their head or chin, 30 the priest is to examine the sore, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease on the head or chin. 31 But if, when the priest examines the sore, it does not seem to be more than skin deep and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days. 32 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if it has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it and it does not appear to be more than skin deep, 33 then the man or woman must shave themselves, except for the affected area, and the priest is to keep them isolated another seven days. 34 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if it has not spread in the skin and appears to be no more than skin deep, the priest shall pronounce them clean. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 35 But if the sore does spread in the skin after they are pronounced clean, 36 the priest is to examine them, and if he finds that the sore has spread in the skin, he does not need to look for yellow hair; they are unclean. 37 If, however, the sore is unchanged so far as the priest can see, and if black hair has grown in it, the affected person is healed. They are clean, and the priest shall pronounce them clean. — Leviticus 13:1-37 | New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV® Copyright ©1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® All rights reserved worldwide. Cinema Variety’s Top 25 Favorite Films of the Decade
This past decade has been a monumental ten years for the state of cinema. To think that there were actually still video rental stores all around the country, to almost becoming nonexistent, is statement enough to show how vastly audiences have changed the way they consume media. Through much thought and careful deliberation, the following 25 films are my personal favorites of the decade and are what I think best represent all that indie, international and arthouse cinema had to offer over the past ten years. Honorable Mentions: Shame Green Room A Ghost Story The Lost City of Z Knight of Cups 20th Century Women Jackie Blade Runner 2049 The Lighthouse Ingrid Goes West A Hidden Life
#25 - Suspiria (2018) Dir. Luca Guadagnino
Tumblr media
“It’s only hours afterward that Guadagnino’s film will cohere for you and yield its buried treasures: the bonds of secret sorority, the strength of a line of dancers moving like a single organism, the present rippling with the muscle memory of the past. It’s so good, it’s scary.”
#24 - Call Me By Your Name (2017) Dir. Luca Guadagnino
Tumblr media
“The final beats of Guadagnino’s adaptation galvanize two hours of simmering uncertainty into a gut-wrenchingly wistful portrait of two people trying to find themselves before it’s too late.”
#23 - American Honey (2016) Dir. Andrea Arnold
Tumblr media
“Part dreamy millennial picaresque, part distorted tapestry of Americana and part exquisitely illustrated iTunes musical, “Honey” daringly commits only to the loosest of narratives across its luxurious 162-minute running time. Yet it’s constantly, engrossingly active, spinning and sparking and exploding in cycles like a Fourth of July Catherine wheel.”
#22 - Post Tenebras Lux (2013) Dir. Carlos Reygadas
Tumblr media
“Some metaphors score and some miss, but this is leap-of-faith cinema: the rewards entail some risks.”
#21 - The Revenant (2015) Dir. Alejandro G. Iñárritu
Tumblr media
“Pushing both brutal realism and extravagant visual poetry to the edges of what one customarily finds in mainstream American filmmaking, director/co-writer Alejandro G. Inarritu, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and a vast team of visual effects wizards have created a sensationally vivid and visceral portrait of human endurance under very nearly intolerable conditions.”
#20 - Her (2013) Dir. Spike Jonze
Tumblr media
“What begins like an arrested adolescent dream soon blossoms into Jonze’s richest and most emotionally mature work to date, burrowing deep into the give and take of relationships, the dawning of middle-aged ennui, and that eternal dilemma shared by both man and machine: the struggle to know one’s own true self.”
#19 - Annihilation (2018) Dir. Alex Garland
Tumblr media
“A shimmering example of what Hollywood sci-fi can achieve when the aim is high, Annihilation is a gripping, mystifying adventure and proof that a transportive experience is more rewarding than a story with clean-cut resolutions.”
#18 - The Neon Demon (2016) Dir. Nicolas Winding Refn
Tumblr media
“Spectacular, gross and delicious (so unsavory it’s almost sweet), the film is more proof of Refn’s mastery of his trash aesthetic and more fun than anything this indulgent and empty-headed has any right to be.”
#17 - Waves (2019) DIr. Trey Edward Shults
Tumblr media
“Propelled by color, energy, electronic music and a quartet of career-making performances, here is that rare sort of cinematic achievement that innovates at every turn, while teaching audiences how to make intuitive sense of the way it pushes the medium.”
#16 - Mother! (2017) Dir. Darren Aronofsky
Tumblr media
“Mother! is something truly magnificent, the kind of visceral trash-arthouse experience that comes along very rarely, means as much or as little as you decide it does, and spits you out into the daylight dazzled, queasy, delirious, and knock-kneed as a newborn calf.”
#15 - Melancholia (2011) Dir. Lars Von Trier
Tumblr media
“The vision is as hateful as it is hate-filled, but the fusion of form and content is so perfect that it borders on the sublime. Melancholia is a remarkable mood piece with visuals to die for (excuse the pun), and a performance from Dunst that runs the color spectrum of emotions.”
#14 - Song to Song (2017) Dir. Terrence Malick
Tumblr media
“Any number of sequences find feelings both externalized and hidden intermingling within the same shot, continuing in a subsequent image that carries the impression, the feeling, without replicating the exact tenor of what has just been seen. They exist simultaneously as certain backstories and what motivations they may inspire delicately unfold. Malick has found a way to translate how a familiar song has the ability to transport you back to a particular time and conjure a specific set of emotions. Whatever he’s been exploring over the past few years pays off here.”
#13 - If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) Dir. Barry Jenkins
Tumblr media
“What Jenkins gets most right—what astonishes me the most about this film—is Baldwin’s vast affection for the broad varieties of black life. It’s one of the signature lessons of Baldwin’s work that blackness contains multitudes. In some ways Beale feels less like a movie than a well-staged, meticulously shot play; a period piece that floats beyond its specific time and place and into the realm of allegory.”
#12 - Samsara (2012) Dir. Ron Fricke
Tumblr media
“Simply put, Samsara tells the story of our world, but onscreen, it is so much more than that. A darker and more ambitious meditation on impermanence, Samsara relies on blunt force and unforgettable imagery, overcoming the hazy logic of Fricke's editing to earn your awe.”
#11 - It’s Such a Beautiful Day (2012) Dir. Don Hertzfeldt
Tumblr media
“A highly original and utterly enthralling film that touches on staggeringly expansive themes - more typically expected in the work of master auteur and persistent award-winner Terrence Malick, than from animations. An existential flipbook and a heartbreaking black joke: stickmen have never looked so alive.”
#10 - Upstream Color (2013) Dir. Shane Carruth
Tumblr media
“You may not be able to figure it out, but that's part of the point of this sensually-directed, sensory-laden experiential (and experimental) piece of art that washes over you like a sonorous bath of beguiling visuals, ambient sounds and corporeal textures.”
#9 - Hereditary (2018) Dir. Ari Aster
Tumblr media
“It’s a supremely effective gauntlet of supernatural horror that’s also, at blackened heart, a grueling domestic drama about how trauma, resentment, and guilt can seep into the roots of a family tree, rotting it from the inside out.”
#8 - Spring Breakers (2013) Dir. Harmony Korine
Tumblr media
“Spring Breakers seems to be holding a funhouse mirror up to the face of youth-driven pop culture, leaving us uncertain whether to laugh, recoil in horror, or marvel at its strange beauty. Full credit to Korine, who sustains this act of creative vandalism right through to the finish. Spring Breakers unfolds as a fever dream of teenage kicks, a high-concept heist movie with mescal in the fuel tank.”
#7 - The Master (2012) Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson
Tumblr media
“Two things stand out: the extraordinary command of cinematic technique, which alone is nearly enough to keep a connoisseur on the edge of his seat the entire time, and the tremendous portrayals by Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman of two entirely antithetical men. Written, directed, acted, shot, edited and scored with a bracing vibrancy that restores your faith in film as an art form, The Master is nirvana for movie lovers. Anderson mixes sounds and images into a dark, dazzling music that is all his own.”
#6 - Interstellar (2014) Dir. Christopher Nolan
Tumblr media
“It’s a bold, beautiful cosmic adventure story with a touch of the surreal and the dreamlike, and yet it always feels grounded in its own deadly serious reality. An exhilarating slalom through the wormholes of Christopher Nolan’s vast imagination that is at once a science-geek fever dream and a formidable consideration of what makes us human.”
#5 - The Place Beyond the Pines (2013) Dir. Derek Cianfrance
Tumblr media
“A brilliant, towering picture, The Place Beyond The Pines is a cinematic accomplishment of extraordinary grace and insight. The movie succeeds both as a high-stakes crime thriller as well as a far quieter and empathetic study of angry, solitary men proves that Cianfrance has a penchant for bold storytelling and an eye for performances to carry it through.”
#4 - Black Swan (2010) Dir. Darren Aronofsky
Tumblr media
“A full-bore melodrama, told with passionate intensity, gloriously and darkly absurd. It centers on a performance by Natalie Portman that is nothing short of heroic. This is, no doubt about it, a tour de force, a work that fully lives up to its director's ambitions.”
#3 - Drive (2011) Dir. Nicolas Winding Refn
Tumblr media
“From the beginning, it's clear this is not a standard-order action film. It takes its characters as seriously as its chases, shootouts, and fights. Drive dynamically merges a terrific film noir plot with a cool retro look. It's an unapologetically commercial picture that defies all the current trends in mainstream action filmmaking.”
#2 - Blue Valentine (2010) Dir. Derek Cianfrance
Tumblr media
“Cianfrance and his actors, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, have not made a cold or schematic film. They aim instead for raw emotional experience, one that's full of insight into the ways a relationship can go astray, but mostly feels like a slow-motion punch to the gut.”
#1 - The Tree of Life (2011) Dir. Terrence Malick
Tumblr media
"The Tree of Life is a film of vast ambition and deep humility, attempting no less than to encompass all of existence and view it through the prism of a few infinitesimal lives. I wrote earlier about the many ways this film evoked my own memories of such time and place. About wide lawns. About a town that somehow, in memory, is always seen with a wide-angle lens. About houses that are never locked. About mothers looking out windows to check on their children. About the summer heat and ennui of church services, and the unpredictable theater of the dinner table, and the troubling sounds of an argument between parents, half-heard through an open window.”
