Pope blames devil for Church divisions, scandals, seeks angel’s help

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – The devil is alive and well and working overtime to undermine the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis says.

In fact, the pope is so convinced that Satan is to blame for the sexual abuse crisis and deep divisions racking the Church that he has asked Catholics around the world to recite a special prayer every day in October to try to beat him back.

“(The Church must be) saved from the attacks of the malign one, the great accuser and at the same time be made ever more aware of its guilt, its mistakes, and abuses committed in the present and the past,” Francis said in a message on Sept. 29.

Since he was elected in 2013, Francis has made clear that he believes the devil to be real. In a document in April on holiness in the modern world, Francis mentioned the devil more than a dozen times.

“We should not think of the devil as a myth, a representation, a symbol, a figure of speech or an idea. This mistake would lead us to let down our guard, to grow careless and end up more vulnerable,” he wrote in the document.

The Church has recently been hit by one sexual abuse scandal after another, from Germany, to the United States, to Chile. At the same time, a deepening polarization between conservatives and liberals in the Church has played out on social media.

Francis’ use of the term “the great accuser” to describe Satan hit a raw nerve with one of the pope’s harshest conservative critics, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Vatican’s former ambassador to Washington.

CHURCH DIVISIONS

In an 11-page statement published on Aug. 26, Viganò launched an unprecedented broadside by a Church insider against the pope and a long list of Vatican and U.S. Church officials.

He accused Francis of knowing about sexual misconduct by a former U.S. cardinal with male adult seminarians but not doing anything about it.

Viganò, concluding that his former boss had singled him out as the devil in disguise, complained in his next statement that Francis “compared me to the great accuser, Satan, who sows scandal and division in the Church, though without ever uttering my name”.

On Sunday, a top Vatican official issued a scathing open letter accusing Viganò of mounting a “political frame job devoid of real foundation” and contesting his accusations against the pope point by point.

Francis is so convinced that Satan is ultimately to blame for both the sexual abuse scandals and the divisions within the Church that he has enlisted the aid of spiritual big gun – St. Michael the Archangel. Michael is mentioned several times in the Bible as the leader of the angels who ousted Lucifer, the fallen angel, from paradise.

Catholics are being asked to recite the rosary daily in October and conclude it with a prayer to St. Michael that was said after Mass until 1964 but then fell into disuse.

The prayer reads:

“St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.”

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. | Peterman is Bills' starting quarterback ahead of Allen

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Quarterback Nathan Peterman never lost faith in himself following the most difficult moment of his young NFL career. What’s more important, neither did Bills coach Sean McDermott.

In 10 months, Peterman has gone from throwing five interceptions in the first half of his first career start, to being chosen Monday as Buffalo’s season-opening starter. Though the job is his until rookie first-round pick Josh Allen is deemed ready, Peterman’s ascension from being counted out to being counted on is a testament to the second-year player’s perseverance.

“I believe he’s a resilient young man. He’s certainly come through some times of adversity throughout his career,” McDermott said shortly the Bills announced Peterman would be their starter at Baltimore on Sunday. “Usually, if you go through some adversity early in life, you’re that much more prepared for it when it comes around later.”

Peterman is aware of the critics he attracted following a 54-24 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 19 in which McDermott’s decision to start him ahead of Tyrod Taylor backfired. And Peterman was grateful for the opportunity to prove himself during a three-way competition that was trimmed to two once AJ McCarron was traded to Oakland last weekend.

“It means a lot. I’m thankful for the people that stood by my side through hard times,” Peterman said.

“When you have obstacles, hard things in your life, that doesn’t mean you should quit,” he added. “Maybe that’s the way some people think, but that’s not the way I think. For me, it just amps me up even more and gives me a lot of desire and drive to go accomplish those goals.”

McDermott based his decision on how the Peterman handled himself upon arriving at the team’s facility in April, and his steady performance in three preseason appearances.

Peterman put up the best passing numbers during the preseason, 33 of 41 for 432 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. In the meantime, the start of the Allen era is on hold after the strong-armed but raw quarterback showed he requires more development.

Allen went 24 of 44 for 210 yards and two touchdowns in three preseason appearances, and particularly struggled in a 26-13 loss to Cincinnati on Aug. 26 in his only preseason start. The 22-year old managed three first downs on seven-plus series while getting little protection from a patchwork offensive line and being sacked five times for 39 yards.

“As a competitor, you want to play,” Allen said. “To not play, that’s going to hurt anybody’s feelings, but at the end of the day, it’s football. We’re part of the team. I can’t say anything bad about the decision. Nate played well in the preseason. Now I’m here to help him in any way possible.”

The Bills traded up five spots to select the Wyoming product seventh overall — the highest draft position Buffalo has ever selected a quarterback.

McDermott declined to get drawn into making comparisons between the two quarterbacks. He described Allen’s development as being on schedule and said the rookie can learn plenty from watching regular-season games from the sideline.

“I expect Josh will be ready to go when his number’s called, whenever it is called. And that’s his focus now,” McDermott said. The Bills are starting over at what’s been an unsettled position since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired after the 1996 season. Peterman will become the 11th quarterback to start a season, including Matt Cassel, who took the first snap in 2015.

Peterman has a track record of bouncing back from adversity.

In his first college start at Tennessee, Peterman had a hand in four turnovers — two interceptions, a fumble while being sacked and a botched handoff — before being pulled during a 31-17 loss at Florida as a redshirt freshman in 2013.

He then transferred to Pittsburgh following his sophomore year and excelled in his final two seasons. At Pitt, Peterman completed 378 of 619 attempts for 5,142 yards with 47 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 26 games, which led Buffalo to select him in the fifth round of the draft.

Peterman doesn’t look toward starting against Baltimore as a chance to ease the memories of what happened against Los Angeles. “Every time I’ve gotten back on the field it’s a new opportunity,” he said. “You’re not tied to your past failures.”

He’s also not looking beyond this weekend, when reminded the Bills’ home-opener is against the Chargers on Sept. 16.

“Yeah, that’s two weeks away. And like I say, it’s day to day,” Peterman said. “It’s about the Ravens.”

The Underground Railroad: Understanding Slavery Through Character Narratives

In the era of slavery, thousands of slaves, each with their own unique emotions and experiences, experienced the constant suffering of the plantation life, often risking fates worse than death. There are many sides to the history of slavery, but often times, the one that is usually shown is through a white person’s perspective. Neo-slave narratives remedy this by creating a more accurate portrayal of the first-hand effects of slavery. The intimate, raw, and emotional stories of both the freedom-seeking slaves and the predatory slave catchers are brought to life by Colson Whitehead in his novel, The Underground Railroad. By incorporating these character narratives, Whitehead captures the unfiltered essence of slaves’ struggle for freedom and conveys a deeper understanding of the history of slavery.

Whitehead’s use of character narratives in his novel is essential in understanding the genre of neo-slave narratives. According to the Oxford Bibliographies, neo-slave narratives are fictitious accounts of slavery that emphasize personal experiences of the detrimental effects of slavery (Kennon). In Judie Newman’s novel, Slave Narratives and Neo-Slave Narratives, Newman, in describing how the neo-slave narrative works, states, “Even inside the narrative itself, the reader encounters a whole host of conventional elements, including the struggle for literacy, whippings, cruel masters, despair and a failed escape, conversion or epiphany, a successful escape, renaming, and celebration (qualified or not) of freedom” (Newman, ch. 2). In neo-slave narratives, the readers are provided with a more intimate view of the injustices faced by the slaves, providing a deeper understanding in their reasons for chasing freedom.

In his character narratives, Whitehead particularly focuses on slaves and whites of different ages, genders, and backgrounds. He depicts the different mindsets and outlooks on life that each individual person has adopted. Whitehead expounds on the unique mentality of each character in order to reveal a broader picture of how slavery affects people. (Olney) Whitehead’s intimate look into the lives of the characters allows readers to further understand the incentives, motives and actions of the characters, which can then be reflected in the attitudes on slavery that are prevalent in society as a whole.

Whitehead begins his novel with a first-generation slave’s journey from her homeland in Africa to North America. Throughout her journey, Ajarry, the female slave, suffers many traumatic experiences: she was sold multiple times, forced onto a ship with foreign strangers, gang-raped, and attempted suicide twice. (Whitehead) Through these experiences, Ajarry observes the cultural dynamics of slave culture, and so do the readers: “She learned to quickly adjust to the new plantations, sorting the n***er breakers from the merely cruel, the layabouts from the hardworking, the informers from the secret-keepers. Masters and mistresses in degrees of wickedness, estates of disparate means and ambition. Sometimes the planters wanted nothing more than to make a humble living, and then there were men and women who wanted to own the world, as if it were a matter of the proper acreage” (Whitehead 6). In this chapter, Whitehead uses Ajarry’s story to reveal themes that were pertinent in slave society: the status between blacks and whites, the physical and mental abuse experienced by slaves, the overall systematic uprooting of blacks from Africa to America, and the different attitudes that people held about slavery. Whitehead also uses Ajarry’s story as a preface for the introduction of the novel’s main character, Cora. With Ajarry being Cora’s grandmother, readers can see the delineation of Cora’s heritage and how it would lead to Cora being born as a slave in America. These character narratives allow readers to form a connection and empathize with the character on a personal level.

Whitehead does not limit himself to slave character narratives, but includes white narratives as well. In the chapter “Ridgeway”, Whitehead describes the life of a young white man who would grow up to become a slave catcher. He illustrates Ridgeway’s childhood and the external forces that would influence his growing hatred towards slaves and blacks. “It worked again and again, his own iron fact, in alleys and pine barrens and swamps. He finally left his father behind, and the burden of that man’s philosophy. Ridgeway was not working the spirit. He was not the smith, rendering order. Not the hammer. Not the anvil. He was the heat” (Whitehead 80). Through Ridgeway’s story, Whitehead explores the theme of nature vs. nurture. Is white supremacy an inborn, inherited trait, or is it something that is cultivated in one’s environment? Ridgeway’s upbringing shows that he was moreso cultivated by his environment, but his own inner insecurities led him to grow a strong hatred that was unmatched by others in his town, who were just blacksmiths working to live. By including a white character narrative, Whitehead provides more insight to the impact that slavery had not only on blacks, but on whites as well.

The purpose of neo-slave narratives is to prevent the misrepresentation of the history of slavery. Neo-slave narratives bring to light the suffering and trauma that often went undocumented due to the sheer lack of power that slaves held. In his novel, John Sekora introduces the concept of the “black message in a white envelope” (Fast 3). The “white envelope” is an analogy for the modification of first-hand slave narratives through a white man’s point of view. John Sekora summarizes the importance of first-hand slave narratives, stating, “The first-person voice presents the particularity of point of view that allows the narrator-protagonist the distinctive advantage of projecting his image, ordering his experiences, and presenting his thoughts in the context of his own understanding of black reality as it had worked itself out in his own life...It is a persistent defining and interpreting of personal, human, and moral identity, hence one's worth, on the slave narrator's own terms rather than on terms imposed by the society that has enslaved him or her” (Sekora 484). The “black message in a white envelope” is why first-hand character narratives--in which we delve into the mind and body of a black slave--must be included in a modern-day book such as The Underground Railroad. Simply providing an objective historical context, or a fictitious storyline of a black slave, is insufficient in providing readers a complete perspective of the history of slavery.

The Underground Railroad is a neo-slave narrative that brings to light the injustices of slavery that often went undocumented. In his novel, Whitehead uses character narratives to illustrate the suffering and trauma that were experienced by slaves themselves, and, on the other end of the spectrum, illustrate the cultivation of white supremacy and how slave culture affected whites individually. Whitehead reveals to the readers different aspects of racism that are embedded in the institution of society and also the morals of the people.

The Relation Between Meat Consumption and Cancer

One of the central philosophies of Global Healing Center is an adherence to a raw, organic, vegan diet. It’s also one of the most controversial. There are many reasons to adopt a vegan diet, such as religious beliefs, a desire to not harm animals, or simply to support one’s health. While we at Global Healing Center do love our animal friends, the reason we promote this lifestyle is because of the health benefits of a mostly plant-based diet. One of the greatest health benefits of a vegan diet is a decreased risk of many types of cancer.

Meat Is Carcinogenic

There is a strong, well-documented, well-established relationship between the consumption of animal products and many types of cancer. An exhaustive nutritional study involving over half a million people found that those who eat large amounts of meat, particularly red and processed meats, faced a significantly higher cancer risk.[1]

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), processed meat is a carcinogen and red meat is “probably carcinogenic.”[2] Before you think this is fringe science or a new theory, consider that the American Cancer Society recommends that you limit your consumption of red and processed meat and other sources of high fat protein, including chicken.[3]

The cancer risk from a diet high in animal protein (20%+ of total calories) is now considered to be on par with smoking. Unsurprisingly, a diet high in plant protein shows no such effect. This could be because plant-sourced protein does not stimulate growth hormones, like IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor), animal protein does. [4]

IGF-1 in Meat Assists Tumor Growth

IGF-1 is a growth factor that promotes cell division in the body, which is a great thing if you’re a growing child. In adults, however, excess IGF-1 in the body can encourage the growth of tumors. The higher the levels of this hormone, the greater the risk of developing several types of cancer. IGF-1 helps transform normal cells into cancerous cells by both inhibiting normal cell death and stimulating cell division.[4, 5] These corrupted cells, with the help of IGF-1, are better able to metastasize to other areas of the body.[6]

Of course, there are other factors that promote cancer in the body. The amino acid methionine, found primarily in animal products, promotes the growth of tumors and cancer.[7] It’s not just animal protein that elevates your cancer risk, however.

Saturated Fat Increases Cancer Risk

Consuming saturated fat from animal sources also contributes to common types of cancer and decreases the likelihood of surviving a cancer diagnosis.[8] Pancreatic, prostate, breast, and colorectal cancer show the strongest correlation with saturated fat consumption.[9]

The saturated fat found in dairy and red meat increases your risk of developing pancreatic cancer.[10, 11, 12]

A diet high in saturated fat from foods like beef and cheese is linked to aggressive prostate cancer.[13]

Both breast cancer risk and mortality increase with red meat and dairy consumption.[14] Survival rates actually dip significantly with high saturated fat intake after breast cancer diagnosis. Alarmingly, animal product consumption during adolescence seems to predict breast cancer risk years before cancer development and diagnosis.[15, 16]

Up to 50% of all cases of colorectal cancer can be attributed to diet and lifestyle, specifically the consumption of dietary fat, red and processed meat, and dairy.[17] In fact, higher consumption of animal products before diagnosis predicts a higher risk of dying from this type of cancer.[18]

Meat and Pediatric Cancer

What a mother eats during pregnancy can increase or decrease the risk of the child developing some types of childhood cancer. Genetic changes linked to cancer can begin in the womb.[19]

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is both the second most common childhood cancer and the second most common cause of mortality for children under 14. The risk of developing ALL is linked to maternal smoking habits[20] and the type of protein the mother consumed while her child was in utero. Eating plant-based protein such as beans, vegetables, and fruit during pregnancy seem to lower the risk of children developing this disease.[21,22]

Brain tumors, which account for 20% of the cases of childhood cancer, are linked to maternal diet during pregnancy.[23] In particular, the consumption of cured meat and sausage seems to significantly increase the risk of brain tumors.[24, 25] Consuming dairy or eggs while pregnant also boosts the risk of the child developing brain tumors. Conversely, a diet high in grains, fresh fish, and cruciferous and yellow-orange vegetables reduces the risk of developing brain tumors.[26]

Lifestyle Is Key to Prevention

Many complex and interconnected factors determine your cancer risk—genetics, environment, exposure to hazardous material, diet. Genetics play a significant role in determining cancer risk. Unfortunately, there’s not a thing any of us can do about the genes we’re born with. Nutrition, however, is something most of us can control. The best thing you can do to reduce your risk of cancer is to switch to a raw, organic, vegan diet.

If you absolutely cannot go all vegan, you should, at least, reduce your consumption of meat and dairy. A 90% vegan diet is much healthier than a mostly carnivorous one. And, I still recommend completely eliminating red meat.

Baby steps are an effective way to elicit change. Start by going completely meatless one day a week. After a month of “Meatless Mondays,” add a “Fruitarian Friday” or “Salad Sunday” to the mix. Continue in this manner until you feel comfortable with a primarily plant-based diet. Going vegan will not guarantee that you’ll never develop cancer but it is a strategy that can help reduce your risk.
