Happy birthday to Rachael Burford! She’s played in a World Cup four times with the Red Roses, winning the last one (and hopefully the current one)

Note
oh my god YES! I’m sitting here waiting for Six Nations to start because it would be perfect timing to announce Kate as Patron of England Rugby. I already have an engagement in mind for her - something to do with this project;

Imagine if she could do the same as she does for LTA for RFU too?

The stars of rugby at the Salle des Etoiles, where else?
The legendary Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting Monte-Carlo, shined even brighter with the international rugby stars for the World Rugby Awards on Sunday, November 26, 2017, in the presence of T.S.H. Prince Albert and Princess Charlene. Prince Albert who did not want to miss this important rugby gathering, ended up missing the first period of the highly anticipated Monaco-PSG football match played that same evening.

Beauden Barrett and Portia Woodman have been named World Rugby Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year in association with Mastercard respectively, at the World Rugby Awards in Monte Carlo on Sunday, cheered by the best of the game past and present. (Photo insert: Portia Woodman of NZ and Beauden Barrett of NZ (Women’s and Men’s World Rugby Player of the Year Award in association with Mastercard)@Dave Rogers – WR/WR via Getty Images)
The two lists of honorable nominees, selected for exhibiting greatness and personifying rugby’s character-shaping principles, had been established by a panel of experts composed of world champions like Richi McCaw, John Smit, George Gregan, Maggie Alphonsi, Dlive Woodward, Brian O’Driscoll, Fabien Galthie and Agustin Pichot.
Beauden Barrett winning prestigious award back-to-back
Beauden Barrett, 26 years old in the All Black’s No.10 jersey, becomes only the second player to win the prestigious award two years in a row, matching the achievement of his former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw from 2009-10. He received the award ahead of four other nominees in All Blacks team-mate Rieko Ioane, England and British Lions duo Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje and Australia full-back Israel Folau.
Barrett said: “I’m very proud and surprised. I wanted to be better than last year and I still think I have plenty more to go. The Lions series put us under the most pressure I have probably felt in a black jersey and that’s a credit to the Lions. We learnt a lot from that series, particularly taking that into the World Cup. When I hang the boots up, that’s when I can look back and be really proud of this. I’ve got to thank my team. I am just one player amongst a great team.”
Portia Woodman joins the very best
The 26-year-old New Zealand winger Portia Woodman, was named the World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year 2017 after helping the Black Ferns win a fifth Women’s Rugby World Cup title in Ireland in August. She received the award ahead of four other nominees in Black Ferns team-mate Kelly Brazier, England winger Lydia Thompson and France back-row duo Romane Menager and Safi N’Diaye.
Woodman said: “Obviously just winning the Team of the Year award shows just how good our team is, and they make me look good. They do all the work and I am out there on the sideline just waiting for the ball. My mum wasn’t a big fan of me playing rugby, but I think she was going to support me no matter what and, without them (my parents), I obviously wouldn’t be where I am because they pushed me to do everything I can to the best of my ability.”

A message from World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont
World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont said: “It has been an outstanding 2017 for rugby on and off the field and tonight we have recognized and celebrated those who have made it so special.
And he added: “From the players, teams and coaches who have inspired millions of fans to the unsung volunteers and projects who at community level are the foundation of our great game, we salute them all.”
Today’s Quote
“Rugby is great. The players don’t wear helmets or padding; they just beat the living daylights out of each other and then go for a beer. I love that.” Joe Theismann

In her second BBC Sport column of the 2021 Women’s Six Nations, England prop Shaunagh Brown critiques their win against Scotland and discusses fantasy rugby and the importance of a good hairstyle.
England beat Scotland 52-10 in our Women’s Six Nations opener on Saturday, but now we have to look at ourselves honestly after we let chances go to waste in that game.
We are always looking ahead to the World Cup, which has been postponed to September 2022, and in our review on Sunday morning hosts New Zealand were mentioned.
Against Scotland, we switched off and they scored a try. You cannot give something easy like that away to New Zealand.
Last time we played France we won by a point, so it is about taking our chances when we get them.
We cannot get bored of doing the right thing and going through processes that work for us. We do not have to do spectacular things.
If the forwards need to carry nine times in a row, that might be boring to watch and it is just as boring to do sometimes. But if that is what we need to do, then that is what we have to carry on doing.
With the World Cup in mind, there is talk of squad rotation from our head coach Simon Middleton.
He has put everyone at ease by saying they want to look at different players, it is not because of anything we have done in the game.
You need to have people who can slot in and out in a World Cup squad. No matter what, you always want a start.
When he says about squad rotation there will still be something in the back of people’s minds thinking they could have started if they had played a bit better.
‘My mates say I am too expensive for their fantasy team’
We have Women’s Six Nations fantasy rugby for the first time this year. Most of my mates have not put me in their team because they say I am too expensive.
I do not know how I feel about that. It is nice to be expensive but at the same time I do not want to outprice myself on the market.
There are so many people playing, it seems to be a roaring success which is a sign of progress and engagement with the women’s game.
You have to choose from different nations so it encourages people to learn about other teams they might not normally watch.
We have some of the world’s best playing for England. Emily Scarratt and Poppy Cleall – who won player of the match on Saturday – are on every single person’s team it seems.
Poppy stands out in every game she plays and seeing the offloads between her and her twin sister Bryony against Scotland was so cute.
They know where the space is and they know where the other one is going to put it. Poppy got a bottle of champagne because she was player of the match and straight away she gave it to Bryony.
‘Matchday hair is crucial’
A surprisingly big part of our preparations on game day is how we style our hair. It is actually very important when you have long hair because you do not want it to get in your face.
Prop Detysha Harper does a lot of players’ hair for matches and coaches are on board with making a meeting 10 minutes late because players need to get their hair done.
Detysha braided both mine and Ellie Kildunne’s for the Scotland game. Anyone who had a plait in the game would have had their hair done by Detysha – she set up a little salon in the team room.
We have had different plaiters across my time with England. Rachael Burford would be very strict with an appointments system so it did not interfere with her own matchday routine.
The times would be written up on the door and if you missed your time or if you did not have an appointment you could not get your hair done.
Detysha is very relaxed. There will only ever be a queue of about two or three but some people stress out if their hair is not done by a certain time.
The general style is one or two plaits up the back to stop those bits falling out and some girls have a plait where a fringe would be.
Some players are quite fussy though, myself included. If it is not tight enough, we will take it out and ask for it to be done again.
Last year when we had early kick-offs because we were playing at the same time as the men’s Six Nations, even the coaches were wondering when we were going to get hair done.
They knew we had to sort it because if you look good, you feel good, you play good.
‘It is time for action against racism’
As in previous Test matches, there is a moment of silence before Women’s Six Nations games to mark Rugby Against Racism.
In the past we have stood in a cross formation and we decided not to do that this time. It led to some confusion and in the end only me and one other player took a knee during the silence.
It was no one’s fault because we were not sure what we were doing.
I take a knee out of respect for the movement but the work I am doing in diversity and inclusion is more important to me.
To me, it is just a gesture and it means nothing now. It is not as important as it was and now it is about action.
It is nice for individuals to kneel but it is more important to me that people want to have conversations with me about racism and take action to bring about change.
Shaunagh Brown was speaking to BBC Sport’s Becky Grey.

Landmark moment as Players’ Council meets to address major issues
The world’s top players have come together to discuss and debate the major issues facing the game.
The newly formed International Rugby Players’ Council met in Monaco on Sunday ahead of the World Rugby Awards. The group is made up of senior men’s and women’s players from the 15s and Sevens codes.
Before meeting with the governing body on Monday, the Players’ Council debated issues such as the proposed international season structure, player workload, concussion return-to-olay protocols and better standards for emerging nations.
The Council was brought together by International Rugby Players, the official representative body of professional players across the globe.
The newly crowned World Player of the Year and Council President, Jonathan Sexton said: “Players need to have their voice heard on a global scale as the game continues to grow.”
“There are massive issues that need addressing and governing bodies and unions must make decisions with the input of the men and women on the pitch.
“It was great to get together with so many of the top players from around the world, have a chat and choose the issues that we want to focus on, so Omar and his team can push the agenda in 2019.”
Players CEO Omar Hassanein added: “The players decide the course of action for the year ahead and now we have to make sure that these priorities are properly addressed with World Rugby and other governing bodies.
“There are many major issues facing the modern game, so it was a real landmark moment to have the Players Council together in the same room, talking passionately about the sport and working out the best way forward.”
PLAYERS IN ATTENDANCE:
Pablo Matera, Juan Martin Hernandez (ARG) Stephen Moore (AUS) Rachael Burford, Charlie Hayter (ENG) Akapusi Qera (FIJI) Guilhem Guirado, Thierry Dusautior (FRA), Giorgi Nemsadze (GEO) Sene Naoupu, Jonathan Sexton (President) Rory Best, Jamie Heaslip, Rob Kearney, Brian O’Driscoll (IRL) Leonardo Gharaldini (ITA), Conrad Smith, Sarah Goss, DJ Forbes (NZ) Joe Rokococo (NZ / Pacific Rugby Players) Andre Radoi (Romania) Vasily Artemyev (RUS) Chris Vui (SAM) John Smit, Warren Whitely, Bryan Habana, Jean De Villiers (RSA) Blaine Scully (USA) Jamie Roberts (WAL)

England women: Claudia MacDonald
England women: Claudia MacDonald
England women: Claudia MacDonald
MacDonald first picked up a rugby ball at 19
England women v Ireland women Venue: Twickenham Date: Saturday, 24 November Kick-off: 17:40 GMT Coverage: Live radio and text commentary on BBC Sport website
Fewer than three years ago Claudia MacDonald was a second-string netball player for Durham University, but on Saturday she will pull on a white shirt and play rugby for England at Twickenham.
When the 22-year-old sings the national anthem, she’ll be watched on by her brother, sister, grandparents and an aunt who is flying in from America for the occasion.
As MacDonald stands on the touchline, her smile beams across the pitch while she recalls walking out of the Twickenham tunnel for the team-run: “I just turned to Rachael Burford and said ‘this place is enormous’.
“You realise it when you’re sat in the stand and it’s full of people, but being here on the pitch is amazing and the pitch is really wide.”
Selected to win only her third cap off the bench against Ireland on Saturday, her rise up the rugby ranks came after encouragement to give the sport a try at University.
“I gave rugby a go on a cold, dark rainy evening and it just sort of progressed from there.”
England women’s autumn internationals 9 November Beat United States 57-5 18 November Beat Canada 27-19 24 November v Ireland
Her talent quickly led her to captain the Durham University 1st XV and play for her county, then join Tyrrell’s Premier XVs side Darlington Mowden Park Sharks.
Playing and training alongside the likes of World Cup winner’s Katy Daley-McLean and Tamara Taylor at Sharks gave her a solid rugby grounding: “It was just amazing to be able to learn from those players and not only that, but learn quickly.”
Quick isn’t just a word associated with the 22-year-old’s netball-to-rugby switch.
At Sharks she was predominantly playing at full-back until England persuaded her that scrum-half was her future.
Off the back of the Red Rose’s 2017 World Cup campaign, England coach Simon Middleton wanted more depth in his nine options.
He assigned backs coach Scott Bemand the task: “It was about finding the next string of nines so we had four of five options on our depth chart,” he said.
“He phoned me months ago and said I think I’ve found a real prospect.”
Bemand had spotted MacDonald playing at Sharks across the back three.
However, the England coach had seen her play scrumhalf for her county and wanted her to play nine.
Middleton explained: “She’s a raw and physical specimen. Scotty spent a lot of time with her, working on what the future could look like for her.”
MacDonald (11) says she learned from playing alongside the likes of Katy Daley-McLean at Darlington Mowden Park Sharks
MacDonald wanted to move to London earlier this year and the England coaches helped her find the right club. Wasps welcomed her into their Premier XVs training squad.
Again, the word ‘quick’ is never far from MacDonald’s lips: “This is all so much quicker and so much faster than I ever thought it would happen. Wasps is a fantastic club and the coaching and my teammates are great.
“Obviously I wanted to play for England, but I thought maybe in one or two seasons. It’s been really exciting and I’m still in shock about it.”
MacDonald is maintaining her focus on a strong performance off the bench against Ireland on Saturday, but with England set to announce full-time contracts for XVs women’s players in the next few months she is focused on impressing.
“I wouldn’t say there’s been an underlying tension and we don’t really discuss it among ourselves,” she said.
“Everyone knows they are coming out in January but we all want to play well as a team and enjoy it as we are.”

'It's hurtful and scary' - sports stars open up on social media abuse
“You just don’t understand what possesses people to think and actually write those things.”
After rape and death threats were made to England midfielder Karen Carney on Instagram, other sports stars have opened up on abuse from social media trolls and how it can be tackled.
Lionesses boss Phil Neville described the messages as “absolutely disgraceful”, while the Football Association have urged police and social media organisations to “tackle the growing problem”.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live’s Friday Sports Panel, three global medallists from different sports gave their reactions and shared their experiences.
Chelsea & FA report Carney abuse to police[1]
‘I’m quite angry about it’
“It’s just such an horrible, appalling thing to say to anybody, it doesn’t matter if they’re an athlete or not,” said European champion sprinter Martyn Rooney.
“I went to college with Karen for a year and she’s one of the coolest girls you will ever meet. She’s a solid, solid person.
“To hear about the abuse, it is ridiculous, I’m quite angry about it all.
“You shouldn’t have to face it, in whatever walk of life you’re in, and social media gives so many people an opportunity to abuse you for no reason.
“No one is going out there to not perform at their best. You don’t need abuse from anybody. It makes you quite angry to hear it and read it.”
‘It’s quite threatening and can be very scary’
“It’s totally unacceptable,” agreed England’s Rugby World Cup winner Rachael Burford. “Nobody, female, male, athlete or non-athlete, should have to receive something like that when they’re just going out to do their best.
“You have to remember, people are human. Stuff that comes from social media, just because it’s from a keyboard warrior who you don’t know, is still quite threatening and can be very scary.
“We’re seeing more and more of it happening and we’ve got to find a way we can prevent these trolls abusing people.
“We’ve had a similar incident where there was a YouTube video up of one of our players and a snippet of a rugby game, and some of the comments written below – you just don’t understand what possesses people to think and actually write those things and wish them upon people.
“Threatening and wishing ill health on family members and yourself… Hoping that you don’t ever pick up a rugby ball again? Getting abuse because you’re running around with a rugby ball in your hand is just ludicrous.”
‘It has a long-lasting impact’
“I’ve had a little bit and it really upset me, underneath an article once,” said British swimming star Siobhan-Marie O’Connor. “I read the comments and it really upset me for a long time and now I just avoid reading the comments.
“Because it [social media] is a relatively new platform, I don’t think they have a way to control it. We need to find a way of controlling what people can put out there.
“And there should be consequences if people do that.
<!–
“In any other walk of life, if it was threats to your door, it would be a completely different matter. But because it’s social media, it’s almost not dealt with the same.
“It is still just as hurtful and scary. On some people, I know for sure, it has a long-acting impact on them.
“It makes social media quite a scary place. When it can be used for so much good as well, it is a shame that these things happen.
“It adds that extra level of pressure. It affects self-confidence and that goes hand-in-hand with performance. If you’ve read something, it affects your confidence.”
‘It’s happening more and more’
“A lot of teams now, at big tournaments, will have their own social media ban just to avoid that sort of situation,” added Burford.
“The GB Sevens girls, when they went in to Rio, decided throughout the tournament they wouldn’t be posting on social media just to avoid any of that upset.
“It’s a shame when it gets to that point when you can’t be active or social and use it for the positives that it does have.
“Whether you’re male or female, any threat is not great. It shouldn’t be happening. The reality is, it’s happening more and more.
“If it’s happening more for male athletes, then why aren’t we talking about it more? We should be talking about it beforehand and trying to put things in place to stop this and prevent it.”
‘How big your profile is can affect the level of abuse’
But, as fans interact with stars, are athletes paying a price for having a higher profile online?
“Social media is also essential to a lot of athletes making a living,” said Rooney. “A lot of the sports brands now, kit sponsors, they want to see if you have a social media presence, and they won’t sponsor you unless you have it.
“But having been to watch football games, I sat behind a goal once and [former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper] Tim Howard was just getting pure abuse for about 45 minutes… Talking about his wife, his family, his kids. It’s crazy. I would have lost the plot.
“I’ve only had stuff when I’ve been talking about football. Other than that, I’ve ignored it. How big your profile is can affect how much abuse you get.”
O’Connor added: “You want to have a presence because it’s about inspiring the next generation as well. There are so many pros to being present on social media.
“It’s about trying to get that balance between not opening yourself up to maybe bring some of the trolls in. It’s such a positive in so many ways but you have to be careful and think before you post.
“But sponsors want to see you on social media and it can be used for a lot of good.”
