"Quite it," you whined, hitting his arm softly. "You know meeting new people makes me nervous."

"It's gonna be fine, Y/n. I told them you were coming. You know what to expect. They know what to expect. Everyone's excited to meet you," JJ attempted to comfort. You scoffed.

"Oh yeah, I'm so sure they're looking forward to meeting the 'pogue wannabee,'" you muttered, kicking a rock that was sitting helplessly on the sidewalk. JJ stopped in his place. His hand pulled you back to him when you continued walking. You grumbled but did as he asked, standing toe to toe with him. He tapped your chin with a finger gently.

"Hey, look at me." You bit your lip, lightly. Peering at him through your lashes. "If they have a problem with you, which I highly doubt, then I'll tell 'em to cut their shit out. It's not like I'm going to let them use you like a verbal punching bag or anything. You don't have to worry your pretty little head about a thing. Everything's gonna be fine by the end of this." You give him a weak smile.

"M'kay." He returned your smile. Giving you a quick kiss to your cheek and continuing on his way. Snagging your hand back in his hand in the process. Pulling along, while you tried to conceal your girly giggles.

"You're a dork," he mumbled. "The Chateau is just on the right."

The atmosphere was rather awkward. You sat on a couch, stiff as a board. The pogues were all exchanging glances with one another. The messages they shared you couldn’t decipher.

Introductions went fairly smooth. You shook hands as they told you their names and stated they’ve heard a lot about you. However soon after you were seated JJ left the room to get some drinks. So now here you were, picking at your nails and biting your lip anxiously as you tried to work up the courage to say something. You opened your mouth to speak but the one you know now as John B, beat you to it.

“Have you always lived in the Outer Banks?” He questioned. You nodded.

“Um, yeah. My parents moved here a year before they had me.” Kiara furrowed her brows.

“How come we haven’t seen you around before?” She asked. You bit harder on your lip.

“I don’t know. I don’t go out much but we do go to the same school.”

“We do?”

“Yeah, we had Chemistry and English together.”

“No way, you’re joking.” Pope slapped his hand on the table causing you to flinch.

“That’s what it was! You would always sit in the back corner. Every class I swear I never heard a peep out of you.” Both Kie’s and John B’s brows pulled together once more in thought. Their eyes however lit up in recognition.

“No, no but there was that one presentation in English that you totally bombed. Nobody could hear a word you said. My god, the second hand embarrassment was real,” Kiara stated, chuckling. You twiddle your thumbs, laughing along nervously.

“Yeah, I was never good at public speaking. I’m working on it though J-”

“How did you even meet JJ in the first place?” John B asked.

“I was out shopping at a market and he was picking up some groceries. I was at the check out and he approached me.”

“You probably didn’t even say a word,” Pope jokes.

“Based on that presentation I’d say you had to use a megaphone to have him actually hear you,” Kiara added.

“Well he was pretty persistent. I saw him a couple times after that.” John B huffed out a laugh.

“I’m shocked he even approached you in the first place.”

“Well like you guys he didn’t recognize me at first,” you mumbled.

“Sorry, what was that? I don’t think JJ’s helped you enough. Look at you, your words are all jumbled again.”

“Yeah, better speak up, Y/n. JJ likes his girls vocal.” Pope spat out his drink at Kiaras remark as John B. covered his mouth to hide his own amusement. You shifted uncomfortably before deciding to stand.

“Come on,Y/n. What did we just talk about? Gotta speak up,” John B teased, smiling into his drink. You let out a nervous chuckle wishing you could just shrink into the cushions of the couch.

“I’m gonna go find JJ if that's okay.”

“Too late I found you first,” JJ spoke through the screen door. Your shoulders visibly relaxed at the sight of him. Nudging the door open with his hip while his hands were full. He passed around the drinks before pulling you down next to him on the couch once more. “You good?” JJ whispered in your ear as he placed an arm around your shoulders. You nodded at him, smiling slightly uneasily while settling into his side.

“Sorry,” you whispered.

“Dude, what did he just say?” Kiara laughed.

“Kie, cut it out,” JJ snapped. She threw her hands up in surrender.

“It’s just a joke,” Pope stated, propping his feet up.

“Yeah one that obviously didn’t land, knock that shit off,” JJ scoffed.

“She’s a big girl. She can stand up for herself,” John B chuckled. The boy next to you rolled his eyes, squeezing your arm reassuringly.

“Yeah, like how you stood up to Mr. Gray's cat down on Bloomington last week? You sure showed that thing whose boss by jumping on top of that trash can.” It was Kiara’s turn to try and stop her drink from spouting out of her mouth.

“Awww, was whittle John scarwed of da pussy cat,” Pope taunted, wiggling a finger in the said man’s face.

“I thought we said that would only be kept between us,” John B. said, annoyed. JJ shrugged.

‘It would have been if you didn’t pick on my girl. I told you to cut the shit out. You should’ve.” John B. looked at you meekly, apologizing.

“No no I’m glad he didn't, it's nice to know Gray’s cat is his weakness,” Kie stated getting up to head inside. Walking past you she patted your arm gently. “ 'M sorry too, Y/n. Was just a little teasing. Had to scope you out you know?” She smiled at you before continuing her way.

“Yeah, can’t let just anyone date out precious JJ,” Pope said patting said man’s cheek. You chuckled quietly to yourself. Finally feeling the tension leave your body as the others started a conversation to ease the mood. You looked up at JJ. He caught your eye. Smirking and giving you a wink before kissing your temple and turning back to the boys. You smiled, leaning onto his shoulder.

Something a little different today.

I’ve been watching Ms. Represented, and it’s got me thinking.

About sexism. Misogyny. Whatever term you want to give it.

Sexism is my grandmother being the first ever female hired by the coal company. By virtue of having a doctorate: it didn’t occur to anybody that Dr. S— could be a woman.

It’s my grandma having to self-fund herself through university, because there weren’t enough forms for financial aid for everyone in the class, so the teacher just gave them to the boys.

It’s my mother riding across town during high school, to take classes at an all-boys school, because science wasn’t offered to the girls.

We talk about intergenerational trauma, and we talk about the impacts of intergenerational and systemic racism. I am privileged. Supremely privileged in so many ways, including the educational levels of my foremothers. But they don’t come without a cost.

It’s not until I’ve made the decisions and committed to the course, that I truly registered the influence social sexism had on my own life choices. I played sport all through school, still would as an adult if I weren’t so injured.

But what sports? Netball and softball. Partly because I love them, and I do. But also, in all honesty, because when I played netball and softball, I got to play. I wasn’t just there on the court, the field, the pitch, watching as the boys passed round me; as they looked through me. I didn’t have to play with and against 15 year old strangers as a shy 11 year old, because my competition turned boys-only, and the youngest girls comp offered was for under 16s.

In high school I studied chemistry, physics, advanced mathematics. But when it came to university, I told myself it was me, not teachers and class mates, that made those subjects so frustrating and stressful. I turned to English and languages, social studies: soft, “feminine” pursuits.

I love them too.

I had the privilege (once again) of being strong across all subjects. The safety net that whichever way I went, I had the academic abilities to get there.

I didn’t want to make a choice, so I let society decide for me. I don’t regret it exactly, although I wonder what-might-have-been.

But I look at my heritage. I look at the hard fought battles of my mother and grandmothers for access and recognition. And I wonder if I let them down. I wonder what I’ve given up.

The truth is, physics fascinates me. Pure maths is a beautiful and creative world of wonder and joy. Chemistry just… makes sense.

I’m passionate about literature, about education and language and stories and shared history and change. I value my bilingualishism and the experiences and perspectives I’ve had the opportunity to engage with.

But I still question what I could have done, had I continued. If I hadn’t let myself be convinced by teachers who looked at a student scoring an IB 7 on every assessment, and assured her that she should be able to achieve a 5 on the final exam.

Was that because I was a girl? I don’t know. I never will.

But I look at this collection of high profile women, federal politicians across the years, from both sides of politics. And I hear them tell the same story over and again.

A story that can be cut together across all their individual interviews. A story that resonates. A story that echoes my mother’s anecdotes, and my grandma’s too.

It takes me back to 2010, when I was all a shiver at the thought we had a female prime minister, at last and I see the regret heavy on Penny Wong as to how that turned out. The misogyny speech of 2012. Sarah Hanson Young’s defamation case. Global Women’s Marches. Julia Banks’ outrage. Brittany Higgins and the movement she brought.

And the way it fizzled out.

No parliamentary code of conduct.

History looks no better of course. In that awful but predictably true way of things. And yet… somehow, we’ve gotten worse at this.

Used to be, Ministers stood aside, resigned, apologised even - radical as that sounds. A rant for another day I suppose.

I was talking about sexism.

So ingrained in society that these women, some of the most powerful people in our nation, not only have found themselves trapped in that culture, where they are voiceless. But they sit there and they blame themselves for it, too.

Don’t get me wrong. Australia is racist. Australia is ableist. Australia is, still, homophobic and certainly it is transphobic and classist along with that.

But Australia is deeply, deeply sexist, too.

And we’ve done an incredible job of telling ourselves that sexism is an historical problem.

I point out that at the local high school, there is only one text on the English list across Years 7, 8 and 9 with a female protagonist. (There’s only two that are female written/directed, and one will be removed next year).

That’s okay, I’m reassured: there’s three female-led books studied in Year 12.

I teach my Year 8s and 9s about American racism, contemporary and historical, against Black and Native Americans. (Only in Year 10 are they ready to tackle our own nation’s history, apparently). They are engaged, they discuss the injustices and form the connections with their own experiences.

I teach my class about the history and structure of Australia’s parliamentary system.

I sit at home and watch the next episode of Ms. Represented.

Where are the discussions around gender in our curriculum? What are we glossing over?

The truth is this: the children are ready. Told to select a television ad for analysis, they choose ads to prevent domestic violence, to promote respect for women.

There is interest and there is passion and there is engagement.

But we adults are scared. It’s too much, it’s too soon. It’s not relevant. It doesn’t exist. It doesn’t matter. We’ll just “teach consent and respect” and pretend it never happened.

You can’t just sweep history under the rug. Especially not while it’s still alive.

It’s not just our beds that are burning: the kitchen’s on fire, too.

Tips From A New Year 12 Who Somehow Got All 9s

Don’t worry, I’m not becoming a studyblr. I’m writing this on results day as a sort of farewell to GCSEs and to impart some “wisdom” upon the youngsters before I move on to A-levels. I’m going to keep this to specific, practical things you can do to improve, none of that vague nonsense. Subject-specific tips for maths, geography, triple science, language, literature, graphic comms and comp sci under the fold because this is too bloody long already.

General Tips:

Don’t go revision crazy. People will always emphasize revision, but so long as you’re revising effectively (see below) you’re safe to start revising about a month before mocks, and two months before your final exams. In terms of a revision schedule during those months, I worked with one or two hours per day, with a free day on Friday and Sunday.

Use apps to stay organised. Put your school timetable and exam dates in your calendar of choice with appropriate reminders and colour coding. To keep track of homework and revision, use Adapt - you can put in your GCSEs and it tracks which topics you have covered and how many times, as well as allowing you to input homework and your school timetable. During study time use Forest (free on Android) to lock yourself out of your phone for a certain amount of time.

Pay attention to lessons from the start. From the beginning of Year 10 every lesson is a GCSE lesson, and everything you learn could come up in an exam. Follow along with your teacher, make the best notes you can, do the work and understand the concepts as early as you can. You’ll thank yourself in a year as you watch the rest of your class wonder what a ribosome is when revision time comes.

Revise effectively. Use Adapt or a textbook to keep track of your confidence level on every topic, so when you’re revising you can focus on the ones you don’t understand whatsoever. Also, don’t just read stuff when revising. You have to train your brain to retrieve the information. Memorise vocabulary and basic facts using flashcards, then answer exam questions. Lots and lots of exam questions.

Use your teachers. They want you to succeed because it reflects well on them! If you don’t understand something after a lesson, pop back at break or lunch, or shoot them an email and they will help. Don’t just bank on it not showing up in the test because Sod’s Law dictates that it will. After Christmas in Year 11 they will often start revision sessions or intervention. Attend them for any subjects you’re even slightly shaky on. They’ll boost your grade like nothing else, even if it does take up some of your chill out time.

Buy textbooks and study materials through school. If your school offers you textbooks and workbooks it’s likely that will be the best deal for them, since they’re purchased in bulk. Grab all you can in Year 10 and talk to the school if you can’t afford many - they may be willing to help. If you know any higher-level teachers see if they have any sample study materials from CGP and the like. My English teacher gave me a lovely set of sample CGP Macbeth flashcards that would have proved really useful.

Make flashcards at the end of every topic. Stay on top of them. You want a term on one side and a definition on the other, or a quote and analysis etc. If you don’t like endless bits of card floating around use Quizlet - you might not even need to make them yourself as many people have shared GCSE flashcards there.

And finally - don’t forget you’re a human! Humans need regular sleep, healthy food including breakfasts, hydration, fun and social time. Make time in your day to take care of yourself. Your brain works better when you’re healthy so often an extra hour of sleep will do more for your grade than an extra hour of revision. Hanging out with your friends and keeping up with your hobbies reduces stress.

Subject Specific Tips:

Edexcel Maths:

Use CorbettMaths. All the time. If you haven’t done every one of his worksheets at least once you’re not grinding hard enough. Jk, but seriously this guy used to teach me in real life and he’s awesome. He makes flashcard packs, videos on every aspect of GCSE maths, daily challenges, textbook exercises, practice exam questions... literally everything you could ever need.

Practice everything until you’re sick of it, and then do ten more questions.

You’ll need to memorise some trig identities. Don’t memorise them as a table, that’s hard. Memorise them as these triangles, sketch them out in an exam and work it out on the spot. Easy.

AQA Geography:

Don’t goof off during your fieldwork. Don’t make the same mistake as me. If I ever had to do the fieldwork paper I would not have got a 9. Even though it’s a field trip, even though you’re with your friends, this will directly impact your GCSEs and you need to treat it like an exam.

Memorise vocabulary then move onto exam questions. Geography is very formulaic and exam questions repeat themselves - take advantage of that.

Memorise. Your. Case. Studies.

AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics:

Practice those reading comprehension questions where you’re presented with information and have to answer questions about them. A surprising amount of people get overwhelmed because they haven’t revised it. You can’t! You have to read and understand it within the exam.

Memorise your bloody equations for physics or you will fail. Use Quizlet, learn them all by the end of year 10 even if you don’t know what they’re about yet, practice using them.

Buy the CGP workbooks and complete them! Make sure to buy the answers too, because CGP are scammers.

AQA English Language and Literature:

Identify 10-20 brief quotes from each piece of literature so you have a few for each character and theme. They can overlap! Also, memorise the author’s intentions for each one. With poems (for those of you who have to do them... I’m not salty, I promise) ask your teacher to recommend 5 that match up with the most themes and memorise 3 quotes from each. Remember to analyse the rest of the poems too - any of them could come up so it’s good to have an understanding.

Memorise structures for every question. The examiners will tell you not to use structures. Shut up, I got all 9s. Structures are the best way for slow writers to ensure they get everything they need to in. TETAAC (topic, evidence, terminology, analysis, alternative interpretation, context) works for lit essays and can be modified for every other question. Work out how many paragraphs you can write in 40 minutes and take that into account when planning. Once the plan is done it’s just a matter of making it sound frilly. English: hacked. My normal plan for a lit essay is a one-sentence thesis statement for an intro, 3xTETAAC paragraphs and a conclusion which reiterates everything but better.

Don’t worry if your grade is terrifyingly low to begin with. That’s just how English rolls. You’ll slowly develop the skills you need and start to make 3 or 4 grades of progress throughout year 11.

OCR Art and Design - Graphic Communication:

Think long and hard about whether you want to do graphics or fine art, if your school offers both. Graphics is designing logos, fine art is whatever you want. I should have taken fine art in retrospect.

Make as much work as possible from the very start, even if you haven’t decided on your portfolio project yet. Everything, and I mean everything, can be shoehorned. If you make a lot of work you have some leeway and can leave out your early stuff so your overall portfolio looks better.

Annotate as you go and store all your thoughts digitally. Even if you have no clue what you’re supposed to write in annotations, put down your thought process. It’s easy to tidy up something you wrote a year ago, but it’s really hard to stare at a letter F made out of newspaper and remember where on earth you were going with it.

To make enough work you will need to stay after school often and give up a lot of lunch times. That’s just how it goes. At least with the right crew it can be fun - the combo of my friends and the very chaotic art teachers at my school made my Thursday graphics sessions something to look forward to.

OCR Computer Science:

Use Quizlet flashcards to memorise terms. Being able to correctly define terms is half the battle, literally. You’ll basically get an instant 9 on the first paper if you memorise every term defined in the textbook. Luckily, someone beautiful and generous by the name of sporkified (wink wink) on Quizlet has created two sets with everything you need to know for the entire qualification.

Practice programming in your chosen language before your programming project starts. Learn to do everything mentioned in the textbook and try it out on a sample project. Many will tell you to not bother about the programming project, it doesn’t matter. That’s true to some extent, but excelling in the programming project can tip you up a grade as well as making the algorithm questions on paper 2 easier for you.

Take part in Cyber Discovery. Give it a Google, sign up. It’s really hard if you have no practical computer experience but doing it gave me a real edge with paper 2 which is where you want to focus your energy as it’s weighted more. Also it’s fun.

Have you ever disliked someone just because a friend disliked them? Yessssss. That’s my job as a best friend hahahaha half kidding. No but seriously though, I have. I mean I’d still be objective and tell my friend if their enemy is making sense in some aspects, but at the end of the day I’ll give them the extra support by disliking that person anyway. Which would you rather own: A camera or a video camera. Why? Video camera, because I’ve always wanted to start vlogging and my phone’s camera is already quite decent, so I’m not really needing a camera right now. Have you ever won a lot of money in a slot machine? How much? Nah, I’ve never even played in a casino. I’ve been in one but I was only 18 then, so I couldn’t really do anything except to walk through the casino and stare at all the machines and booths that I couldn’t play at haha. Do you watch sports on TV even though you aren't a sporty person yourself? I will sometimes watch a tennis or MMA match if I catch them on, but that’s about it. I wouldn’t know who to root for either, or know who’s the better player; I just watch for the action. Do you eat / drink at your computer? Yes but I try to avoid it more these days because I hate greasing up my trackpad or leaving bits of food on my keyboard. If I really have to eat at my laptop I’ll put on a show or a video to watch so that I don’t have to actually be using my laptop.

How much do you overeat at special occasions? (Birthdays, Christmas, etc) I don’t think I have the capacity to overeat haha. My room for food is small so when I get full I simply stop eating, or I no longer get up to get a second serving. Generally I try to get a piece of every meal though, no matter how little; I always want to have a taste of everything so that I don’t miss out. The music you listen to: Is it mostly sung by female or male vocalists? I think it’s an equal amount but when it comes to frequency I think I’ve been listening to female vocalists more often – Beyoncé, Paramore, The Japanese House, Banks, etc. My playlists generally have both female and male artists though cause I also listen to Hozier, alt-J, Coldplay, Rhye, Joji, and other male dudes. Do you think it's important to enjoy your job or do you just work for money? As much as possible people should always aim to end up somewhere where they love what they do for a living, but given that I’m quite materialistic but mostly grew up in a household with a mom who was very frugal and often reiterated the joys of a simple life (aka a life I hated lmao), I think I’d have no problem having a job that pays handsomely but wasn’t necessarily viewed as fun. I wanna be able to spoil and reward myself after all the work I do. Do you require glasses / contacts to see properly? If so, which do you use? Yeah, I have glasses. I don’t find mine embarrassing it all; it’s a source of great pride since I have a lot of relatives etched in Philippine history with that name. I don’t ever want to lose it and I’ll probably continue to keep it even after I’m married. What would you choose to be famous for? It’d be nice to be known for a blog. If I had the time, resources, and tbh the connections it would be amazing to write about anything under the sun for an audience. What is your current occupation? Do you enjoy it? There are some parts I enjoy/ed (the friends I made for high school, the overwhelming independence I gained in college) and some parts I hate/d (some classes I was forced to take in high school, my inability to adjust during my first year of college). I think that was already 11 in the morning. The last city you were in: Where was it and do you like it there? Other than my own it was in Pasig. It’s okay but I definitely prefer other cities. I don’t work out or do anything to maintain a certain figure so I don’t have the the ideal body for modeling; if anything the only factor I have going for me is the fact that I’m quite skinny. I did want to be a model when I was a teenager though; that was around the time VS Angels were extremely popular, so I’m not surprised I used to want to be like them. How often do you change your hairstyle? What does it look like now? I only change it up once a year. Right now I have a bit of a bob with bangs. Truth or Dare? Truth.
