Ok, today as I work I pressed play on a 90s Italian movie taken from a fairy tail. Fantaghirò. Full italian production, the princess dresses herself as a men to become a knight and end a war, falls in love with the enemy prince.
I watched it as a child, and I remember it was trash but...
At the birth of the princess, the White Witch (fairy?) foresees that she'll be the true heir of the king, in spite being a girl. The King of course orders her execution. Instead of you know. Vanishing in thin air as she arrived there, the Witch turns into a white rat. And runs away. As a rat. The king luckily has two convenient chests full of cats in the throne room to solve the problem (the problem doesn't get solved).
Other valid methods to predict the future: read the colours in the flame that a random person in the court spits. There are, apparently, male coloured flames, and female coloured flames. (but it's not blue and pink so there's that). Another very effective way is to throw a bunch of snakes in front of you other two daughters, scaring them.
The king raises the princess, Fantaghirò, who is a tomboy. To punish her for speaking back to him, as a child, the king decides to use the Montessori method. And has little Fantaghirò spend the night down a dry well in the courtyard.
I am having the time of my life, this is marvellous and the costume are unironically so pretty. Further updates later.
#personal crap#fantaghirò#it's not fairy tale logic is just total lack of cause and effect#“Oh no the witch is a rat! The cats the cats!” *guards open two chests full of cats*#(I'm down illustrating today and I need some background to concentrate)

everytime I read shit like "omg girly franchises are so mistreated in the west, they hate little girls" i have a stroke. you mean the united states. you mean north america. you mean your third world country. that is not representative of the west. for anything.
the first multimedia franchise in Italy spanning dolls, cartoons and books was a medieval fantasy series with a princess protagonist in the 90s, fantaghirò. slayers, an anime originally aimed at teenage boys, had dolls in Italy for little girls. there is a sailor moon sculpture in turin

FANDOM QUESTIONS
DO YOU PREFER REAL-LIFE OR ANIMATED SHOWS?
Both, although there is a definite bias towards the former.
With the latter it greatly depends on the overall quality of the show, as well as the style in which it is presented.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST FANDOM?
As a child I had quite some:
Disney Ducks, Pippi Longstocking, Ronja Rovarsdóttir, Princess Fantaghirò, Queen Millenia, and The Addams Family.
While I never was a gamer myself, I very much loved to watch others play games - especially the classic Sonic games, as well as the Super Mario ones … which you can (somewhat) call a childhood fandom of mine, too.
WHAT’S THE LONGEST YOU’VE EVER BEEN IN A FANDOM? WHAT FANDOM WAS IT?
I'm in the Star Wars fandom since the age of twelve, which, in fact, was some years before the prequels came out. (yes, I'm a little older than most of you here, just in case you were wondering ... the same age as RotJ to be precise)
WHAT WAS THE FIRST THING YOU EVER CONTRIBUTED TO A FANDOM?
A drawing of Princess Leia, if I remember correctly.
A PERSON WHO GOT YOU INTO A FANDOM. WHAT FANDOM DID THEY PULL YOU INTO?
@mikeilo got me interested in Prince Phobos (W.I.T.C.H.) several years ago, but to say that I was “involved” in the fandom is a bit too much. It was more about this particular character, though.
NAME A FANDOM YOU DIDN’T CARE / THINK ABOUT UNTIL YOU SAW IT ALL OVER TUMBLR.
No idea.
Tbh, I hardly search for fandom stuff on Tumblr - given experience showed me that the majority here and I don’t get along, taste-wise.
HAS TUMBLR CAUSED YOU TO STOP LIKING ANY FANDOMS? IF SO, WHICH AND WHY?
No, why should I let a community affect my love for a fandom!? It’s not the fandoms’ / characters’ / authors’ fault that some people are just plain disagreeable and obtrusive.
If anything, it has just reinforced my aversion against the things I disliked from the get-go - especially if there is some “activist” fanaticism, connected with aggressive, proselytizing behaviour involved.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR CURRENT FANDOM(S)?
Ambivalent.
There are some obnoxious brats, which should be ignored at best. Drama is a waste of time and energy!
Then again, there are also some very nice people out there.
Most of the time I prefer to have just a few contacts, anyway - i.e. like-minded ones I, my preferences & convictions get along with. Those, I do appreciate greatly, though.

Mr. Darcy & Lizzie Bennett
Spike & Buffy Summers
Severus Snape & Lily Evans
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE MALE / MALE OR FEMALE / FEMALE SHIPS?
Albus Dumbledore / Gellert Grindelwald
Willow Rosenberg / Tara Maclay
I can’t say that I’m all that emotionally involved in any of these, though, other than finding them somewhat interesting regarding the dynamic between the characters.
If these weren’t canonical pairings already, I would probably never even have thought of them as a romantic shipping constellation at all, as it’s a theme that neither concerns, nor interests me when it comes to the dynamic between characters of the same sex.
Friendships are an entirely different matter, though. But that wasn’t the subject of this question here, was it!?
DO YOU HAVE ANY 3-WAY SHIPS? IF SO, WHAT?
No! I don’t like this theme at all.
A PAIRING YOU SHIP THAT YOU DON’T THINK ANYONE ELSE SHIPS.
My OC / canon ones … alas. T_T
WHAT’S A SHIP THAT YOU WANT TO SHIP PUBLICLY, BUT EVERYONE ON TUMBLR HATES IT, SO YOU KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT ABOUT IT?
I’m just doing my thing. If anyone doesn’t like it then that isn’t my problem.
EXAMPLES OF NON-SEXUAL/-ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS THAT YOU LIKE
PARENT & CHILD
Darth Vader & Leia Organa - The father / daughter dynamic between these two has always fascinated me a lot.
Mairon & Alcanis - The "vaniron" kid, also a complicated case. (OC headcanon)
Ozai & Zuko - Dramatic ...
Severus Snape & Harry Potter - I love the snily ship, so I headcanon Snape as Harry's biological father, because why not ... it's interesting.
CLOSE FRIENDSHIPS
Anakin & Obi-Wan & Ahsoka
Luke & Han
Cal & Cere & Greez & BD-1
Cal & Dagan
Frodo & Sam
Finrod & Beren
Fingon & Maedhros
Ratbag & Ranger (from the Tolkien-based "Shadows of War" game - the only known orc friendship)
YOUR FAVOURITE THEMES / FANDOM TRENDS.
fantastical / mythological elements
As someone who has always been fascinated by ancient myths, I can’t help but love this stuff.
occult / magical elements
Given I am interested in these subjects, I very much like to see, and incorporate, these themes in the fictional universes and characters I like.
anachronistic elements / fusion of different historical period styles
For example, say, Cyber Victorian (garments that combine Victorian era designs with a Matrix style twist, plus futuristic technology, and a setting in a likewise futuristic world)
scientifically sound elements and reasoning
I think this is a quite important aspect, especially in sci-fi.
philosophically inspiring + visionary elements
Such as caste-free social structures & natural law anarchy (not to be confused with the “rule of force” one, let alone the woke version).
scientists, explorers, philosophers & (martial) artists
I just happen to enjoy seeing these types of characters.
sarcasm, dry humour & banter
It certainly adds some “spice” to the mixture.
characters with a scorpionic & virgoan influence
Many of my faves have this, especially the scorpionic one.
depth and complexity in character portrayal & a well thought-out backstory
Should be a given, but unfortunately isn't, more often than not - especially these days. Shame!
complicated, long and well thought-out redemption arcs
If not canon, I’ll do it myself.
I've always been fascinated by the concept of redemption.
In connexion with my favourite villains, it is a theme I am quite obsessed with and can't do without, as I find evil as such not appealing at all.
In fact, what makes these characters attractive to me is their power & potential, and not their misuse of it. The process of redemption finally brings said potential out and puts it to good use, which I find deeply satisfying.
Plus there is also the element of defying the forces of darkness, who always twist and pervert - and this is the ultimate solution to it, making everyone and everything whole again. Redemption arcs are a great "f**k you" to said forces & I love them all the more for that!
happy developments & outcomes for my faves
Because I simply can't have it otherwise.
villain/anti-hero & (anti-)heroine pairings (or vice versa)
It’s a dynamic that I find particularly intriguing - always have - also regarding the redemption theme.
partners that are of equal rank in a relationship - plus healthy relationships, for a change
Especially where you least expect it (see pairing constellation), and where both partners had to work on themselves to achieve it (i.e. realism doesn’t hurt, now does it!?).
happy and loving (not to mention enduringly passionate) committed relationships / marriage
Just like Morticia & Gomez ... *sigh*
monogamous unions + fidelity
Guys as committed as Anakin, Snape, and Gomez are the best!
eternal love / twin flames / soulmates / however you want to call it
Regarding OTPs this theme is an absolute must!
het content
Why yes, that’s just my personal preference, as that is something I can actually relate to.
not overly sexualized portrayals of relationships
I just don't want to see the explicit content (graphic description of genitals, for instance). Most of the time it's enough when it's just hinted at.
Or if you want to write about the sexual act, then at least express yourself in a more pleasant manner - it doesn't always have to be this crude, pornified language.
If anything, make the characters make love - with all the emotional intensity, intimacy, and tenderness that should be there - and not just plain fuck, like mere beasts.
portrayal of female characters where being badass and being feminine isn’t mutually exclusive
Because it is NOT!
physical beauty / perfection + humility
I can't stand it when people are smug about something such as winning the genetic lottery - be proud of your actual achievements, but not about something like this ... if anything be grateful for your luck.
the apotheosis theme
Mortality sucks ... and who wouldn’t want to ditch everything awful that comes with it!? Like diseases, aging - begone!
INVENT A RANDOM AU FOR ANY FANDOM (WE ALWAYS NEED MORE IDEAS).
Star Wars
Darth Vader doesn’t die and gets the chance for an actual redemption arc, atoning for his ill deeds as the Dark Lord - as an act of purification and reclaiming his original, true name - as well as helping the Alliance free the galaxy. (given how powerful he is, his contribution would be immense)
more importantly - he finally has the opportunity to make up with and actually get to know his children - especially Leia. That has always bugged me a great deal. Ani didn’t even get the chance to talk to his daughter. There is just too much focus on the father-son dynamic anyway. Nothing against Luke – love him, but it’s just not right that Leia was being left out of it almost entirely. Plus she is the one that resembles her father more (personality-wise) after all. I’d so have loved to see a confrontation of these two. (not to mention some cute father-daughter moments, eventually)
~*~
I also made an AU for an OTP of mine (Dagan Gera & Santari Khri) from the Jedi : Survivor - Game

I FOUND IT

I found the Fantaghirò series online!
(This is an international poster, I had no idea they even dubbed them in English).

Look at this in all its cheesy 90ties splendor.
They used to marathon all of it every year at Christmas for 2 days straight. 6 episodes (movies?), each of them almost 3 hours long. And yes, the villains look like Power Rangers villains and all the men wear various amounts of eyeliner. It's glorious.
Looking back, I kind of had a crush on Fantaghirò, I mean, look at her! (Yes they put her on the poster twice, in armour and in her princess dress and hairstyle).
This is so nostalgic
#Fantaghiro#fantaghirò#childhood things#ok i DEFINITELY had a crush on her#i just didn't understand what a crush was

FAVORITE MOVIE LOVE STORIES
THANKS FOR THE TAG: @superkingofpriderock
Belle and Beast (Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, 1946)
Since i was a kid, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite western european fairy tale. I relate at the same to the Beast’s desire to be accepted by the society that fears and looks down his appearance and to Belle’s mixture of fear, curiosity and fascination by the hybrid anthropomorfic creature. And with their great chemistry, the actors Josette Day and Jean Marais really captured those feelings in this classic adaptation directed by Jean Cocteaus
Damiel and Marion (Wings of Desire, 1987)
A 1987 film by Wim Wenders originally called Der Himmel über Berlin (lit: ‘The Heavens Above Berlin’).The film depicts two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, wandering in Cold War era Berlin and listening to the thoughts of humans. Among those humans are an old man looking for the now-destroyed Potsdamer Platz and recalling the good times he used to have there; Peter Falk As Himself; and Marion, a lonely French trapezist desperately looking for a purpose in life. The angels don’t directly intervene in human existence but sometimes give comfort to humans who need it, like a woman in labor, or a suicidal man on a tram, or a motorcyclist who is dying in the street after he was struck by a car. However, Damiel yearns to be human himself and to experience life as a mortal does. Eventually he falls in love with Marion, the trapeze artist, and has to make a difficult choice: to become human himself in order to be with her, leaving Heaven.
Queen Fantaghirò and King Romualdo (Fantaghirò/The Cave of the Golden Rose franchise, 1991-96)
Fantaghirò (known in the english speaking world as The Cave of the Golden Rose) is a series of five television films produced in Italy by Lamberto Bava (Mario Bava’s son), telling the adventures of Fantaghirò, the youngest of three princess sisters, who traines to become a brave warrior as a way to get free of the sexist restrictions imposed at her life by her father. Her kingdom has been at war with a neighbor kingdom for years, and one day the rencently crowned young adversary king, Romualdo, decides to end the war by personally challenging the best champion of Fantaghirò’s kingdom. Fantaghirò, disguised as man, presents herself as this champion, and their love story begins when Romualdo falls in love with the beauty of her eyes. What’s interesting about this couple is how their personalitys complement each other: Fantaghirò with a more combative strong temper, and Romualdo with a more sweet and calm temper.
Marianne Danielle and Doctor Van Helsing (The Brides of Dracula, 1960)
While watching Hammer Horror’s Brides of Dracula, i finded adorable how Doctor Van Helsing cares for Marianne Danielle (whom he befriends while arriving at Transilvania), how he wants to protect her and respects her feelings, to the point of trying contain his sorrow when she announces her engagement with Baron Meinster. I always imagine that when he defeated the Baron (who is revealed to be a vampire), and flee the wind mill with Marianne, he declared his feelings, she reciprocated, he teached her how to fight vampires, they married and became a battle couple searching to purge the world of the vampires. This is a pairing who deservers more love, fanart and fanfiction.
Fininha and Clécio (Tatuagem, 2013)
Tatuagem (Tattoo) is a movie set in the late 1970s, during the period of the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, that tells the love story between Fininha, an young soldier, and Clécio, an actor and playwrighter who produces satirical plays for a underground theater called Chão de Estrelas (Floor of Stars). Their romance is one of the most sweetest ever captured on film, but we also feel a certain unease that the fact of Fininha being at the service of the military who persecutes the theater artists will break the couple apart at any moment…
Karaba and Kirikou (Kirikou and the Sorceress, 1998)
Kirikou and the Sorceress is a 1998 French animated film, directed by Michel Ocelot, loosely based on a West African fairy tale. It tells the story of a tiny baby boy, named Kirikou, who is born in a spectacular way (all by himself, without effort of his mother nor outside help) and can speak and walk immediately after being born. After a couple of questions, he learns that a wicked sorceress, Karaba, has cursed the village and devoured all the men and boys, except his uncle, who is on his way to fight the sorceress. He tricks the sorceress, saves his uncle as well as the children of the village (twice!!), brings the water back to the dried-up spring and, among other things, discovers the sorceress’ true motivations: Karaba is evil because of all the suffering she went through at the hands of men, including a very subtly implied rape. All the bad things that she allegedly had done are ultimately proved to be false. She does hate everyone, but she gets better. Despite being a baby, Kirikou asks Karaba in marriage when she pulls a Heel–Face Turn, saying that he doesn’t like little girls. She doesn’t accept, of course, but then her kiss turns him into a handsome young man.
Nina Shah and Lisa MacKinlay (Nina’s Heavenly Delights, 2006)
Nina’s Heavenly Delights is a Rom Com about a cooking contest, directed by Pratibha Parmar. The death of her father Mohan brings prodigal daughter, Scot with Indian ancestry Nina (Shelley Conn) home again to Glasgow, her mother, siblings - and the family restaurant, “The Taj”. Being able to keep the latter now hinges on the cooking skills Nina learned at her father‘s knees. In the “Best of The West Curry Competition” she will have to face the former fiancé she left at the altar, Sanjay. In this competition, she will count with the partnership of Lisa, who owns half of the restaurant since Mohan’s death and already seems to be very much part of Nina’s family. And in the proccess, Lisa also becomes a part of Nina’s heart…
Lady and Tramp (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)
I grew up watching VHSs of the old Disney 2-D Animated movies over, and over, and over. And a thing that i find funny is that most people tend to quote movies from the 1990s Disney Renaissance as when Disney Couples started to met each other first instead of fall in love at first sight, bu when we make a retrospective, in actuality it was Lady and Tramp who started the trend. First they met at Lady’s house and have a verbal fight due to diverging points of view about humans, them they encounter each other again at the streets when she flees from Aunt Sarah, and they walk trough the zoo to unleash Ladys muzzle, Tramp takes her to dinner at Tonys (wich us gives Bella Notte, one of the most romantic scenes in movie history)… every step that a real couple takes to meet each other is taken by Lady and Tramp.
Orfeo x Eurydice (Black Orpheus, 1959)
Black Orpheus is a 1959 film, a French production shot in Brazil and in the Portuguese language. It is a retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Rio during Carnaval. Orfeo is a trolley conductor who moonlights as a dancer in a samba school. He is engaged to be married to the gorgeous and passionate Mira, but doesn’t seem too enthused about it. On his trolley car, he meets Eurydice, who has arrived in Rio from the countryside because she is being chased by a mysterious man who she thinks is trying to kill her. Orfeo and Eurydice fall in love, but the strange man—Death himself—is still stalking her.

Rules: List seven comfort movies, and tag seven people.
Thanks for the tag @caffeinosis! <3
And since it’s comfort movies, brace yourself for some delightfully trashy choices which remind me of my childhood:
The Fantaghirò series (this is a pretty terribly acted Italian fantasy movie series. I watched it religiously as a child and I MAY have been watching it as an adult too, whenever I happen to catch it on tv - usually at Christmas)
The Neverending Story
Trading places (for some reason, this has become a Christmas classic in Italy. Don’t ask. Anyway, it doesn’t truly feel like Christmas for me if I don’t watch this on Christmas eve with my sister, and I was very sad we had to skip this tradition this year, because of Covid)
The Goonies
The Princess Bride
The Order of the Phoenix (because I fell in love with Evanna Lynch as Luna)
I’ll copy @caffeinosis here and mention the Indiana Jones movies because they were part of the reason why I became passionate about history in the first place (even if, as an historian, they now sort of make my skin crawl)
tagging: @yetanotherknitter @cookieek @him-e @slayernina @literatigeek @dragonretiree @sparkkkkzfly (and whoever wants to do this - I am bad at this tagging thing)

Dobrý den again, I have another little question for ptak o. At 6:49 Skeleton shouts something to the dog, it sounds like "van". (yt, remastered version) Couldnt find such word in Czech. In German dub it is translated as "verschwinde" (go away). Whats the original word? I have now seen the film several times because of the excellent play of Karel Roden, and it seems to me the film is not as bad as I first thought. The Czech actors play well. The German men play wooden, T. Ruland (princess) is ok.
Hi again! :) (btw sorry for long answers! I can never stop myself when I start to ramble about fairytale films!)
To your first question: I can’t understand what Skeleton says either, lol! At first I thought he says “Ven!”, meaning “Out!” which would sort of make sense in the context. But no matter how many times I rewatch the scene, it sounds more as if he just does a weird roar at the dog – ”vrrr” is a sound of dog growl in Czech.
Oh yes, Karel Roden is great and seeing him in a fairytale role is a rare treat. He is extremely picky about his roles, especially in recent years, and often stars in international projects.
International fans might know him as a villain in Bulletproof Monk and Rasputin in the first Hellboy movie. Not to mention his roles in Lamberto Bava’s Dragon Ring, second Fantaghirò and Sorellina e il principe del sogno.
Karel Roden as villainous Skeleton in The Firebird (1997)
I think that all the actors did the best they could with the material they were given. From the Czech actors: I can tell you that everyone basically plays their standard roles, in which they are good at; I wouldn’t say that they had to try too hard to be believable (e.g. Langmajer plays the sleazy prince, cause he usually plays sleazy roles, even to this day; Roden plays a charismatic villain, as he always does etc.). Kudos to Marián Labuda Sr. who plays Skeleton’s henchman, he was one of the best Slovakian actors in history and yet he took such a thankless little role and managed to nail it! (I imagine he enjoyed it too cause he didn’t often get to play villainous roles on screen :)
Ondřej Brousek, who plays the hero’s brother (why, oh why did they add his character and then killed him off?), is nowdays more of a composer/musician than an actor. He composed music scores for e.g. fairytales School of Princes (”Škola princů”, 2010) or The Treasure (”O pokladech, 2012) among many others.
For me, it’s interesting to see Barbora Leichnerová (Elena’s maid Margita), as it was her last role on screen and I don’t think that she is still acting to this day. She is a lesser known Czech actress, but I remember her well cause she starred in several made-for-TV fairytale films in the 80′s.
Edit: I feel bad for not mentioning the presence of the legendary Horst Buchholz in my original comment! He was a great actor and I wish that he had more screentime as the King in this movie!
I’ve always liked Tina Ruland in both The Magic Pouch and in The Firebird. I think she was pretty and charming in both roles (more in The Magic Pouch since she had more screentime and personality there). And a big shout out to Dana Černá, one of my favorite voice actresses, who provided her Czech voice! (the Prince is voiced by another of my favorite voice actors: Zdeněk Hruška, who also provided his voice to Max Urlacher in The Queen of the Lake btw)
I think that one of the many issues this movie has, one of the biggest ones is how underused the Prince and the Princess are as a couple. (btw I had no idea they became a pair while filming this, thank you for the info!) Their meeting is pretty cute, love at first sight sort of works (*I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream* theme is probably copied from Sleeping Beauty 1959, but I am ok with it). Their chemistry seems alright to me. But then...they never really talk again and all their interactions become forced and wooden. They could have been an adventuring, villain-killing power couple but Elena is then pretty much reduced to a constant damsel-in-distress and the Prince always seems to need the help of other people/magic items to suceed in his tasks...
Like you said, this movie had a lot of good things coming for it. Personally, I think it’s a real shame that the screeplay and execution ended up being so completely superficial and without spark.
This is just my personal opinion, but I think that they should have given the job to someone else than director Vorlíček. Someone younger, with new, creative, original ideas, who would turn the source material into a fun fairytale adventure film....
Vorlíček was about 66 years old at that time and pretty much drained as a creator. I know I sound harsh, I really respect and love his works from 60–70′s, but after that, the quality of his projects started to decline and (judging from interviews he did in his later years), he often seemed to put the blame on anyone but himself and refused to admit that his latest films are trash (I’ve seen his sequel to Girl on the Broomstick and it must be one of the worst movies ever made)....
