HEY GUYS!!
GUYS!!!
FRANCE HAS REACHED THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF SIGNATURES ON THE CITIZEN'S INITIATIVE AGAINST CONVERSION THERAPY IN THE EU!!
ONE COUNTRY DOWN, SIX TO GO!!
We also need still quite a few signatures in order to reach the one million required.
As to date, the six other countries with the most signatures are:
Spain - 38.72%
Finland - 30.31%
Ireland - 24.86%
Netherlands - 24.15%
Germany - 23.54%
Belgium - 23.09%
So yeah, still a long way to go, but we ARE slowly getting closer. Don't stop now! Don't let this stay within the community, either, if you have any friends or family who are open to queer rights, get them to sign, too!

Struck by the politics of floods
Politicians are notorious for their penchant for politicising even natural calamities. Expecting politicos in Spain to stay away from their natural instinct is unreal. The recent floods that hit Spain towards the close of October prove this. The floods have raised more questions than the number of dead Spaniards. The latest toll is nearly 220 dead and over 90 missing. And of all the regions,…

Today (Oct 15 2024) Spain finally annulled the so called "double count" for Basque prisoners.
In 2008, the EU passed a mandatory law for all members that recognised the years spent in a member country prison as due if the prisoner had another sentence in other member country for the same crime. Easy example, if you were judged and imprisoned for being a terrorist in France and sentenced to 20 years, and you were accused of the same crime in Spain and sentenced to 25 years, the law establishes you only have to be imprisoned for 5 years in Spain since you already served.
Since 2008, Spain has been ignoring this law and when Basque prisoners completed their sentence in France, they were brought to Spain where their prison time started from scratch.
These days before the law was passed - again, it was long due!! - the right wing has been saying that this is unacceptable and that the Spanish Government is giving in to terrorists. Because Human Rights who?
16 years have passed without implementing the European rules, and during all this time many prisoners have seen their rights trampled on just because Spain wants to punish them its way. Again, this is not a plea defending Basque terrorists. They're the ones who broke the law, the state should guarantee it. But the Spanish Justice system has been is a Revenge system when it comes to Basques.

The Council of Europe has published a report about Spain's violations against the language rights of Catalan and Aranese people. It explains how Spain does not follow the European charters that aim to respect minority and minoritized languages, despite having ratified them, and also shows how Spain's mistreatment of the Catalan linguistic community has only gotten worse in the last 15 years.
And we appreciate this greatly, but there are experts proving Spain's human rights violations against Catalan people all the time, and yet nothing happens and the Spanish Government continues passing more discriminatory laws and the Spanish tribunals keep applying them in the worst ways possible. Is the Council of Europe ready to do something to make Spain respect the peoples whose land it occupies?

Hetalia characters with dishes typical for their country - part 2 (part 1 here)
Spain: Paella de marisco (seafood paella) -> A surprisingly easy to make dish consisting of saffron infused rice with seafood. Other versions can also be made with meat from livestock (like the paella valenciana with chicken and rabbit) or be made vegetarian. The word "paella" is Valencian/Catalan and translates to "frying pan", the name of the dish originating from how it is traditionally cooked in a wide, shallow pan.
Prussia: Königsberger Klopse (königsberger dumplings) -> Named after the capital of East Prussia, these dumplings are made from minced vail, pork, or beef mixed with onions, eggs, and soaked white bread and cooked in saltwater. Some of the brewing water is then thickened into a sauce using roux, egg yolk and cream. It is traditionally served with boiled or mashed potatoes. Back then in Königsberg itself, the dish was known as Saure Klopse (sour dumplings).
South Italy: Pizza Margherita -> This flatbread made from leavened yeast dough topped with crushed tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil leaves. It is said to have earned it's name from appealing greatly to the Italian Queen Margherita when she tried the Neapolitan speciality, though newer reseach suggests that the name Margherita wasn't used until 40-50 years after the alleged incident.
Finland: Mustikkapiirakka (blueberry cake) -> Berries play a very important part in Finnish food culture, especially hand picked forest blueberries which are often turned into pastries and pies. A particularly popular pie is made with the pie crust eased into the tart tin with floured hands (not rolled out), then the blueberries and a custard filling are added and the cake baked until the top becomes golden-brown.
Sweden: Kannelbulle (cinnamon roll) -> Despite other Nordic countries claiming the invention of the sweet roll, very year on 4 October Sweden celebrates "Cinnamon Roll Day". A sheet of dough is covered in butter, sugar, and cinnamon, then rolled up and cut into the characteristic pieces. The are traditionlly baked in muffin wrappers and only dusted with sugar, they are lighter and less sweet than American cinnamon buns with icing.
Denmark: Flødeboller (cream puff) -> The fluffy, foamy inside of this treat is made from beaten egg whites mixed with sugar, dressed on a wafer and covered in chocolate. Often they are topped with coconut flakes, shredded almonds, or colourful sprinkles, making them a popular little "cake" for danish children to have for someone's birthday at school. They were first invented around 1800 in Denmark, but quickly became popular in France and Germany as well.
Norway: Kvæfjordkake (Kvæfjord cake) -> This sponge cake baked with meringue with almonds on top and then layered with vanilla or rum custard (sometimes mixed with whipped cream), is also dubbed the best cake in the world - Verdens beste. The name is based on the region it's inventer originates from. Starting in the 1930s as a variation of the kongekake ("king cake") with less almonds, as they were quite expensive, it is now a popular dessert for special celebrations.
Iceland: Rjómabollur (profiterole) -> A little sweet treat made from choux pastry filled with jam and whipped cream, the top dipped in chocolate and decorated with sprinkles. Traditionally, they are eaten on "Bun Day", the Monday before Ash Wednesday. Kids wake their parent up by smacking them with paper wands and every smack on the parent's bottom before their feet touch the ground translates into one bun which the parent owes to the child.

How is the symbol on the Spain flag connected to the extreme right? I always just assumed that was his personal thing somehow
Hi 👋👋👋👋
So the siluete on the flag Jorge carries is the Toro de Osborne (Osborne's bull).
This started as a publicity stunt and the siluete was put along some Spanish road. In fact, in some places it can still be see, not in Catalonia, where I'm from.
Somehow, that symbol started to pop up in flags and become a symbol of Spain's unity and crushing the unique identity of some Spanish areas (Catalonia, Basque Country and Galicia for example).
That unity is usually linked to the right (PP) and far/extrem right (Vox) in Spain. So basically a symbol that was mant to represent Spain become a symbol of the extreme right. I can't find any, but where there are right/extreme right demonstration or politic events this flag can be seen around.
It's true that is a personal choice, but so is what parties do you vote. I'm from Catalonia and if I see that flag in the street I know it's someone from Vox. I don't know if the flag holds the same meaning and have the same connotation in Madrid (where Jorge is from) because the right has more power and influence. It probably does, but the use is more widespread than in other areas.
It's okay to not know this because Spain is all about the bulls and bullfighting and one can assume it's just a non-official flag (and it kind of it), but in this case is kind of a display of his political believe. Don't quote me on him voting for the right (or extreme right), but he clearly is not a left voter.
Sorry for the info dumping in here

Just want y'all to know I am thinking about Ashley Graham one day giving a moving speech at an event (maybe a BSAA thing, maybe a Tera Save or equivalent) talking about the importance of fighting bioterrorism and talking about her own experiences with it for the first time publically.
She is not a gifted orater by nature. She practiced a lot, she spent a lot of time planning it and getting assistance from speech writers to help her write it (because she cares so much about making sure it has the right impact/she is conveying the meaning she wants to say). So many hours practicing. It is clear she is nervous and she stumbles over it, especially the parts that are emotional (maybe she is speaking about some current event, or perhaps this is some kind of fundraising or awareness press event). The parts about Spain are hard for her to get through because she is doing her best to make sure people understand how dangerous/how important it is to support anti-bioterroism efforts.
But even though it is not as polished as Ashley wanted it to be, it is a damn good speech. Because she is honest and passionate and she clearly means every word she says. When she is done, she gets thunderous applause. That almost sends her into tears again.
This is what starts her anti-bioterrorism career. She tackles more of the political side as a great spokesperson. She continues on to become involved in multiple organizations. Maybe she even ends up in congress on a special committee.
#I am making ashley a figurehead in anti bioterrorism circles#i think it is fanon that she becomes an agent but I like her doing more of the organizational/political stuff more#(because she is already comfortable with the politics stuff thanks to her dad's career-- especially because I am making her hang out at the#white house/withdraw from college for a semester or two after RE4#because Spain was absolutely a life altering event for her#and she needs/deserves some time to process#and honestly I headcanon that Ashley never really new what she was going to do with her life#she was just getting a generic major either business or polysci that would appease her dad/the world#but it didn’t super motivate her... but after Spain? she realizes she wants to help people like Leon)#ashley meets Claire Redfield doing this#which is how she meets Chris#and only then does she realize that they all know Leon later when Leon shows up talking shit to the redfields#ashley graham#resident evil#re stuff#resident evil 4#re4#re4r#resident evil 4 remaks

Spanish politics and politicians are disgusting everyday, but how they are reacting and what they're saying after the tragedy in the País Valencià is NAUSEATING.
Namely putting the blame on the Agency of Meteorology because it didn't warn them (it did), blaming the Spanish Government because it won't send them the army (law establishes it's the regional government who has to officially ask for it), suggesting the floods have happened because the Spanish Government is following an evil plan to create a famine?, putting the blame of the massive floods on the destruction of little dams for irrigation????, and asking the fucking volunteers from all around the Spanish state that are traveling to the affected area to help NOT TO GO????
