I’ve been running sprints and long distance for the past 8 years. Over these years, I have acquired many running related products that have made running and recovery more enjoyable.  Continue reading for learn about 15 beneficial products for runners.

1.     Training Shoes

The first thing each runner needs is the right pair of shoes. Since everyone’s body is different, the type of shoe that is needed will be special for each individual. Shoes vary in cushioning, stability, width, and motion control. Popular brands of running shoes include Nike, Brooks, Adidas, Mizuno, and Asics.  To find the best shoe for your I suggest going to a running specialty retail store such as Grand Bluff Runningor Movin’ Shoes. 2.    Shoe Insoles

These blister pads are honestly the best option on the market. Nothing is worse than going for a 10 mile run with a big blister on the bottom of your foot or the back of your heal. These blister pads by Muellerare a hydrogel pad that relieve pressure and rubbing of blisters when worn.  In my experience, these pads help my blisters heal faster and help me run pain free when blisters begin to form.  This product is definitely a must for long distance runners!

4.     Rollers

Rollers are the best recovery tools for loosening up tight muscles and preventing injuries.   The simplest roller available is a foam roller.  Each foam roller varies in hardness, so finding the right hardness for your muscles is important for your recovery needs.  For first time users, I suggest purchasing a softer roller and then working up to a harder roller once muscles loosen up and more pressure is tolerated.

Stick rollers are another great rolling tool and are used to better relieve tightness in a pinpoint area.  Stick rollers vary in their length, but typically the shorter ones can get the job done! My favorite roller is The Stickbecause it is small enough for my gym bag, yet large enough to roll out the bigger muscles in my legs.

A more expensive roller on the market is R8 by ROLL Recoverywhich costs $129.  This product is a deep tissue roller and relieves pain the deepest and tightest muscles in the body.  Since this tool is self-adjusting, it takes the hard work out of rolling and makes it much more enjoyable. ROLL Recovery offers interchangeable massage heads to change the pressure and intensity of the massage.

5.    Stretch Out Strap

The Stretch Out Strap is a simple tool to help runners stretch on their own.  It has loops throughout to change the type of stretch and it’s intensity.  It also comes with a list of stretches that can be performed using the strap and uses visual aids to show each stretch.  I use the Stretch Out Strap regularly after practices to get the best stretch possible.  The strap has made me more flexible since it is easier to stretch forgotten muscles. 6.     Tiger Balm

Tiger Balm is often compared to Icy Hot, but in my opinion Tiger Balm is far superior. Not only does it smell better, it works faster, longer, and doesn’t burn if you take a shower too quickly after applying.  Tiger Balm is perfect for soothing joint aches and pains.  I use it for shin splints and sometimes on my knees after a long day of competition. Tiger Balm can be found at Target or Walgreens.

7.     Protein Bars

Protein bars offer a quick and on-the-go way to properly energize and restore essential nutrients after a run.  Protein bars are often expensive, but they don’t have to break the bank!  Some of the best options can be found at Costco or Sam’s Club.  My all-time favorite protein bar is the FitCrunch Bar since it closely resembles a chocolate candy bar. The peanut butter and chocolate bar is only 6g of sugar and contains 30g of protein.

Another one of my favorite protein bars is a Larry and Lenny Cookie—they make a great dessert after a long run! They are soft and gooey and go great in ice cream if I’m looking for a little treat.  These cookies are dairy free, soy free and vegan making it perfect for all dietary

needs.  The best thing about these cookies is that they are guilt free and contain 16g of protein.

8.     Compression Socks and Sleeves

Compression socks and sleeves are great for recovery because they increase blood flow throughout the body and reduce swelling and pain. There are many different brands of compression sleeves and socks that provide excellent recovery for runners.  If you are planning on doing compression recovery while you sleep, I recommend purchasing compression socks so that they do not bunch up during the night and cut off circulation.  My favorite compression socks are currently on sale at Nikefor $39.97.

9.     Bluetooth Headphones

I personally enjoy long distance running without music because it helps me clear my mind and focus on my surroundings.  However, I know countless people who would cringe at even going for a jog around the block without music in their ears. I have a pair of Bose SoundPortwireless headphones that are perfect for working out in.  For those who are conscious of their surroundings like I am, the Plantronics Backbeat Fitis the perfect pair of Bluetooth headphones for you.  They aren’t noise cancelling like most popular headphones, instead, they enable runners to hear outside noises. 10.  Flip Belt

In high school, my parents always made me run with my phone so that I could contact them in case of an emergency.  I never enjoyed wearing my phone in a bulky arm sleeve so I opted for the Flip Belt.

The Flip Belt is a small fanny pack the holds your keys and phone while you are working out. It is perfect for long distance runs since its compact design makes it lightweight and virtually unnoticeable. Other similar designs and brands can be found at any big box store such as Walmart and Target.

11.  GPS Watch

GPS watches are perfect for long distance runners because they track the number of miles you run and also the paces for each mile. There are many different brands of GPS watches, but my favorite is Garminbecause they are reliable and have an excellent warranty on all of their products.  They have watches starting at $99 and they go up to $999.

12.  Reflective Gear

Wearing reflective gear while running isn’t something most runners think about, but it’s important to have and wear especially while running at dusk or on country roads.  It doesn’t have to be fancy and can be as simple as reflective wristbandsor a reflective vest. No matter what time of day you run at, it is important to warn oncoming traffic by wearing reflective gear.

13.  In Case of Emergency Bracelet

In the unfortunate event of an emergency while on a run, it is a good idea to wear a bracelet with your name and emergency contact.  RoadIDcreated emergency bracelets specifically for runners or individuals with an active lifestyle.  Individuals can create an online account through RoadID to store all of their medical information.  In the case of an emergency, health professionals can call RoadID and request your information, or they can log in to RoadID using a serial number and pin found on the bracelet.

14.  Water Bottles

Not every runner likes to carry water with them during a run, however, there are many water bottles that are small and easy to carry. Each side of the vest holds a water bottle and there is also space for your phone and keys.

15.  Body Glide

Blisters are painful, but chaffing during a run may be worse.  On my long runs, I like to use Body Glide for Her Anti Chafe and Moisturizing Balm.  It’s easy to use and applies like a deodorant stick.  It’s also small enough to back in my Flip Beltif needed during a long run.

Wireless Earphones Review - Trial in Travel - Sbode Sports Wireless Headphones

Please note, I did receive this product free of charge for an honest review. All opinions are my own. If you have been to this site before you know I am a huge fan of my Plantronics wireless headphone, and listen to them almost daily on my commute. I have had them for quite some time now and was wondering what new cool wireless headphones are now out there. As we were preparing for our makeup Aruba trip, I was contacted by Sbode folks to take a look at their wireless headphones. I have not heard of the company before, though after some research it looked good and the headphones looked really nice. They have basic Bluetooth pairing where you turn on the power on the headphones and then turn on Bluetooth on your phone to discover them. Just make sure that the headphones are well charged before pairing.

It was easy to figure out most of the operations as it is one button. There are dedicated buttons for volume. This is great since on Plantronics it is the same button and to increase volume you tap it, but to decrease you have to hold down the trigger. It does not always work well or quickly. Surprisingly, the ear pads that were already on earbuds, worked well in my ears. The earphones do come with additional pads in different sizes so that you can make them comfortable to your fit and feel. I set up the headphones a day before our trip. I was glad for the little case it was easy to throw stuff in there and it in the bag.

I put the wireless headphones on as we were waiting to board the plane and the little one was off exploring parts of the airport and the kids' corner.

And once the kiddo passed out on the flight after all the running around we did prior to taking off, I had the headphones back on listening to some music waiting for the in-flight entertainment to be available once we reached the cruising altitude. By the way, playing and running around with the kiddo before boarding is probably one of the best things we came up with (received a great travel tip). In her little backpack, we always have a light up ball that we can throw around and chase. It is irregular in shape so that it does not roll away too far and lights up so it is easier to find in corners and under seats.

And of course, I also tested out the wireless headphones on the beach. I was listening to music and podcasts. I was pleasantly surprised how clear they sounded even with the noise on the beach and wind. The buds fit well in the ear and so the sound came through well.

Overall, it was a good trip with the earphones. The charge lasted throughout the trip, though it was minimal usage compared to daily use for commute or workouts. The sound was good as well as the fit. In these days of wireless headphones, when we carry thousands of songs in our pockets, it feels impossible to exercise without “Eye of the Tiger” playing in the background. But music isn’t just a cure for boredom while you run. Countless studies have shown the right playlist can actually help you push yourself longer and harder.

Music helps you train better

Researchers have been studying the link between music and exercise performance since 1911, when researcher Leonard Ayres discovered that bicyclists pedaled faster while a band was playing compared to when it was quiet. Much of the recent work has been summarized in a review by Costas Karageorghis and David-Lee Priest, published in the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology and available in two parts.

They found that in over 60 studies, music caused participants to push themselves for a longer period of time, report lower levels of exertion, and maintain a better mood overall. The right tunes can even draw you into a “flow state”—a fancy way of saying you’re “in the zone”—which reduces the amount of mental energy you need to expend to keep moving.

However, music’s power is more effective during moderate exercise than high-intensity workouts. In those more vigorous cases, when you’re already giving the activity everything you’ve got, researchers found that music didn’t increase performance. That said, it can still improve your mood during those tough workouts.

Music can serve our workouts in two primary ways: asynchronously, in which it acts as a background motivator and mood elevator, and synchronously, in which it helps us keep time as we move. We humans have a natural tendency to synchronize our movements with music, so songs with speedier tempos can unconsciously make you run faster to match your stride with the beat. In these situations, music increases performance even more than it does as simple background music.

Of course, this isn’t true for every single persone. Some athletes prefer to focus on their pace and performance, and they find music distracting. If that’s you, don’t fix what isn’t broken. But if you already like the idea of listening to music while you run, then you need the right playlist to really pump you up.

Craft the perfect exercise playlist

Loud, fast songs with lots of bass are always good motivators, according to researchers. The higher the tempo, the more likely you are to push yourself—until you reach around 140 beats per minute. At that point, going faster doesn’t necessarily increase performance, at least if you’re using music as background motivation.

If you’re synchronizing your movements with the beat, however, you can try to match the tempo of your music with your desired pace. This chart from run2rhythm gives you some basic BPM values for different mile paces. For example, if you’re aiming for an 8 minute mile, you’ll want songs with a tempo of around 166 beats per minute. You can also cut the tempo in half and run with two steps per stride.

Once you know your desired BPM range, head to a site like SongBPM and start plugging in your favorite tunes. SongBPM will tell you the tempo of the music, so you can decide whether it belongs in your playlist or not. Stick to songs that have an even tempo that isn’t too complex, since they’ll be easier to match with your movements.

The ideal song will have more than just the right tempo, though. In a 2009 study, Karageorghis found that music with motivational qualities drove athletes even harder than music without. So choose music with lyrics that pump you up and motivate you to keep going, like Eminem’s ’Till I Collapse (171 BPM) or Krewella’s Killin’ It (160 BPM).

In addition, researchers found that music works much better as a motivator when participants picked their own music, choosing songs that were more personally or culturally relevant. Instead of loading up a random exercise playlist on Spotify, pick songs that fall into genres you like, fit your personal taste in lyrics, or have emotional significance for you.

Grab the right gear

Researchers are quick to acknowledge the dangers of running with headphones, so if you’re going to listen to music, make sure you do it right. Get an unsealed headphone that lets you hear outside noise, so you can remain aware of your surroundings. We recommend the sweatproof Plantronics BackBeat FIT ($105 on Amazon) or Yurbuds Inspire 200 ($25 on Amazon). Apple’s EarPods are cheaper than our other picks, but unfortunately aren’t waterproof—though they’ll do in a pinch. Unsealed headphones may not sound as good as sealed ones, but safety is more important than sound quality.

As you sweat it out, you don’t want that moisture to make your phone slip out of your hand. A cheap exercise armband can protect it from both sweat and gravity. Alternatively, leave your phone at home and run with an old iPod Shuffle—you can find cheap ones on Craigslist. That way you won’t have to worry about damaging a $700 device when you should be focused on pushing yourself to the limit.

Finally, make sure to keep all your devices—music player and headphones—charged. There’s nothing worse than hearing the music die in the middle of a hard workout.
