I think the ethos of Ace Attorney fascinates me so much because Phoenix Wright is just a bad lawyer. And how that comes through in farewell my turnabout when he has to defend Engarde.
#the point of a defense attorney is not that they automatically believe their client is innocent#and that whole idea is why defense attorneys get a bad rep when they defend people who are obviously guilty#(which in and of itself is a problematic notion)#(but for the sake of brevity let’s use the term obviously guilty)#Pheonix who up until then has only defended clients whose innocence he could verify / trust#suddenly has to defend someone who while not committing the actual crime#is its mastermind#how does that square with his 4th grade understanding of justice#vs Edgeworth and his year long sabbatical where he comes to understand that justice is the pursuit of truth#and not just guilty or not guilty#is a person any less worthy of a defense attorney because they’re guilty?#is it ok to through someone to. the instability of the justice system alone simply because they are guilty#do guilty people not have rights ?#those are the sorts of questions that these games have been getting me to think about#ace attorney
