24 October 2002. Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, accompanied by German First Lady visited the Charité Hospital in Berlin where they were received by Gerhard Gaedicke, Director of the Pediatric ward.
During the tour, Queen Rania visited the "Linked-up World for Children" project that was launched by the hospital in 1998 to provide children in hospitals with network computers that allow them to interact with other children outside the hospital and in different parts of Europe. (Source: queenrania.jo)
After touring the hospital, Queen Rania discussed the possibility for future exchange of information and expertise between the two countries, especially in the field of medical research and cancer treatment.
Also present, were Joachim Dudenhausen, Dean of the hospital, and Manfor Dietel, Medical Director. Charité Hospital, which is the largest university hospital in Europe, hosts an educational facility for 4,905 students in medicine, dentistry, nursing education and science, and medial physics.
It has 2,499 beds in 49 clinics and treats roughly 100,000 in-patients and 250,000 out-patients per year, with the support of 26 institutes. The hospital employs 7,563 people including 2,500 scientists.
On Tuesday, Queen Rania, who established Dar Al-Aman, the first child abuse shelter in the Arab World, met with Norbert Schweers, director of the City of Potsdam's Youth and Welfare Department. Queen Rania expressed special interest in the protective measures taken by the department to help prevent abuse, neglect and maltreatment of children and youth.
Also present at the meeting was Birgit Hacker, who heads the Eva Laube Children's Home, one of the child safety homes of the Youth and Welfare Department.
During the meeting, Queen Rania discussed the possibility of mutual exchange of information and expertise between Jordanian experts and their German counterparts as well as the possibility of developing training courses for these experts at specialized German centers.

Giving our women a healthy lifestyle is true Women Empowerment!
While the newspaper today is full of women’s dreams, rights, aspirations and equal opportunity slogans; there is no denying the fact that in a large slice of the world, girls and women remain ignorant about their health issues and the society too is careless about their health quotient. To begin with, take a look at these statistics –
Only 37% of women have access to healthcare services as compared to 67% men (as per a study by AIIMS and Harvard University)
Housewives were one of the largest groups committing suicides in India in 2018 with nearly 63 housewives killing themselves every day
More than  39% of Indian women claim they are not able to work out daily because of work responsibilities
Less than 20% of women in India have access to clean hygiene for menstrual care
And the proportion of overweight and obese women has almost doubled in India in the last 17 years
In an equitable world, women empower women; as they say, queens fix each other’s crown. On Women’s Day, I as a doctor; share some of the thoughts that women can do for other women and girls in their household. Such small actions would go a long way in building a healthy future for the Indian women –
1.  Menstruation is a taboo topic in India. But I advise all the women to talk about it especially about hygiene and cleanliness with their daughters. Do not leave this responsibility for school counselors. Talk to your girls on how unhygienic choices like cloth or husks can give them infections, rashes, and discomfort.
2.  The thyroid is a very common problem in Indian women. But it is very much manageable. So women must encourage their relatives and friends to get their thyroid function test done once they reach the age of 35 or if they notice symptoms like weakness, hair thinning, weight gain or fatigue like situation. Women must consult a doctor if thyroid function comes out of range.
3.  Rather than going on crash or fad diets, women and girls of the household should motivate each other to begin with some physical activity and devote at least 45 minutes every day. It is very important for women as well to lift weights and do strength training. Strength training would also help the postmenopausal women minimize the risk of osteoporosis, which is a common problem in this stage for women. Eat a balanced diet and pay attention to your nutritional needs. Taking Calcium and vitamin supplements as recommended after 40 are equally essential for women.
4. There is no gender bias for health problems like Diabetes, Cholesterol and Blood Pressure; women are at equal risk of heart diseases as well. So every woman should also get their yearly tests done reflecting on their overall health. After a certain age, breast mammography should be doe and periodic breast examination is also recommended. In case, women notice some spotting or irregular bleeding, Pap Smear, Uterus ultrasound, and hormonal tests should be done and the reports should be shown to a gynecologist for consultation and medication.
5. And finally, the problem of PCOS - Polycystic ovary syndrome – is for real. Nearly one in every five women is reported to be suffering from PCOS. The common symptoms are irregular periods, unwanted male-pattern hair growth or excessive facial hair and obesity. So if you see any young girl or a woman facing such challenges; instead of body-shaming her, make sure to give her emotional support and share your knowledge about the matter. Unmanaged and untreated PCOS can create the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer and cholesterol problems in the long run. Hence, it calls for a serious treatment rather than a cosmetic solution!
The alchemy of women empowerment includes working for women’s health as well. And every husband also must take care of her spouse’s health just like the woman takes care of the entire household. Looking forward to more seeing more women taking charge of their health and inspiring many others in the process! Happy Women’s Day to the half of the world who is the reason for the existence of the other half.

Riley looks at Liam who looks like he’s about to burst.
“A girl. A daughter? I’m…” He pauses looking for the right words, “You’re carrying a future queen?”
Riley smiles at him, “Yeah. Is that…are you okay it’s not a boy?”
“I am thrilled. It’s a girl. She’s going to be as beautiful as you.” Liam kisses her hand.
Dr. Gallardo smiles, “I have a feeling some little girl will be very spoiled.”
“You have no idea.” Riley says as she looks at Liam who can’t take his eyes off the screen or the smile off his face.
“So, around this time, you should be noticing her kicking more if you haven’t already. Let’s just look around once more and gets some measurements. Around this size, you can think of your baby as the size of a large banana.” Dr. Gallardo notices Riley chuckles.
Liam squeezes Riley’s hand, “She’s beautiful.”
“Liam, it’s practically black and white static in a way.” Riley says.
“But I already know she looks just like you which is beautiful.” He pulls her hand up to his lips and kisses it.
“Well let’s get you cleaned up and on your way, shall we?” She hands Riley some paper towels. She’s cleaning her stomach, Dr. Gallardo prints and hands Liam ultrasound pictures. They say their good-byes and Bastien walks them back to the SUV with a serious look on his face.
“Is everything okay, Bastien?” Liam asks.
“Sir, well, there’s been a disturbance at the palace but it has been handled.”
“What kind of disturbance?” Riley questions, looking to Liam with confusion of her face.
“It seems Leo and his friend Damien got into a fist fight.”
Liam and Riley look at each other, not entirely sure they heard him right. Liam knew Leo had a temper on him, but he’d never know him to hit anyone. At the same time, they turn to Bastien for more answers.
“It seemed to resolve itself rather quickly however Lady Katie did go into labor and they are currently at the hospital.”
“Seems the palace gets exciting when the King isn’t present, huh?” Riley says, softly giggling.
“It would appear so.” Liam finds himself chuckling.
Back at the palace, Liam and Riley are talking to Hana and Maxwell about the baby.
“I can’t wait to dress her up!” Hana exclaims as she’s holding Riley’s hands.
“I know! Little bows galore!” Riley giggles as she looks over to Liam.
Maxwell looks towards Liam, “I’m not looking forward to her social season. Imagine if it’s anything like yours.”
Liam stiffens as he absorbs Maxwell’s words and thinks back to his and Riley’s behavior. His stiffened expression makes Maxwell chuckle.
“We’ll have to go out and get some fabrics and I’ll start sewing some blankets and such for this little princess.” Hana pauses, “Have you talked about names?”
Riley looks at Liam who is still reeling from Maxwell’s comment before smiling, “We have a few in mind but we haven’t narrowed it down.”
“Well whatever it is, I know it will be as beautiful as you Little Blossom,” Maxwell smiles.
The group continues to have a bit of small talk when they are taken out of their bubble when they hear Madeline and Leo arguing unaware of their listening ears.
“What happened back there? You say one thing and then you left!” Leo exclaims.
“Everything is just a game to you, isn’t it?” Madeleine shouts.
The four take turns looking at each other, trying to decide if they should leave, make their presence known or just listen.
“What are you talking about? We were looking at the nursery and then you just left.”
Madeleine finally breaks down the wall she has had up for years, “It was supposed to be me! Me, Leo! Not her!”
Leo’s face twists up in confusion. While in the other room, Riley gives Hana a knowing look. Riley had spent so much time hating Madeleine when it never occurred to her that maybe Madeleine wasn’t okay with how Leo had just left her for Katie. Riley didn’t know much, but she knew enough from members of the court that Madeline had been with Leo since they were teenagers. Riley couldn’t imagine being in love with someone for years just to have then leave like it wasn’t anything.
“You should have married me. We should have children together. All those years ago, it should have been me.” She feels a tear falling, “So I’m sorry if I can’t just look at everything you have with someone else and not get upset.”
           “Mads, I...I didn’t realize...”
“That someone could actually mean it when they said they loved you? Or that they actually thought they meant more to you than casual sex?”
He takes a deep breath, “You know I don’t know how to tell people how I feel.”
“That excuse that doesn’t work with me and you know it. You have no problem telling me anything else but God forbid you have to step out of your comfort zone to admit that you actually care about someone.”
Leo goes to speak but is interrupted by the sound of Riley’s cell phone going off.
“Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse.” Madeleine storms upstairs and Leo follows her after letting out an exhausted sign.
           “Ye—Hello?” Riley answers.
“Hey Riley, this is Dr. Gallardo.”
“Oh, Dr. Gallardo,” Liam’s attention shifts to Riley’s call, “is everything okay?”
“I’m sure it’s nothing, but I was wondering if you could come back in tomorrow. I just want to double check something I’ve noticed after you left. It won’t take long.”
“Of course. What time?” Riley can feel her heart rate start to quicken.
“Is 8:30 okay? It’s my first appointment and I’d like to get you in as soon as possible.”
“Yes ma’am. We will be there.”
After exchanging a few pleasantries, the pair gets off the phone.
“Is everything okay? What did Dr. Gallardo want?” Liam questions.
“She said that she wants to double check something that she saw but she’s sure it’s nothing.”
“Then let’s not worry. If it was something serious, I’m sure she would’ve told us at the appointment, eh?” He walks over to her and kisses the top of her head.
Riley gives Liam a soft smile and turns her focus back to Hana, “Think you could make her some dresses?” She rubs her hands on her stomach.
Hana’s eyes widen, “I would be honored!”
“Love, everything will be fine. I promise.” Liam kisses her hand as they are being driven to the obstetrician office.
“I know, I just didn’t sleep well without you there.”
Liam’s heart breaks a little, “Only a few more months, my dear.”
The couple shares a soft smile before Bastien stops the SUV and they got into the office.
“Good Morning, Dr. Gallardo said to go straight back.” The receptionist says and they go back into the examination room.
“I’m sorry to have called you back in but I just needed to check something.” She says as Riley gets up on the table and Liam takes his place beside her.
“It’s no trouble at all.” Liam says, still maintaining his composure.
Riley pulls up her shirt and Dr. Gallardo applies the gel and starts moving it around. Her and Liam can’t help but smile when their little girl comes into view.
“I just want to recalculate some of the measurements I took yesterday.” She stops talking and starts looking at the monitor with a puzzled face.
“What…What is it?” Riley can barely get out.
The room is silent for a few moments as Dr. Gallardo moves the wand around and looks at their baby girl in several different angles.
Finally, she stops and faces the two of them. She wipes the gel off Riley’s stomach and Riley covers herself up best she can.
“I know this is going to be difficult to hear, but it appears that she has Talipes Equinovarus also known as club foot. What this means is that her foot is rotated inwards and downwards.” She pauses and shows them with her hand the normal position and the position her foot is in, “The tissues connecting muscles to the bones are shorter than what we usually would expect. This is seen more commonly in males but there are cases where females have it and it looks like her right foot is the only one affected.”
Riley can see Dr. Gallardo’s lips moving but she can’t hear anything. All of her attention is on Liam who is listening to the doctor intensely. He’s nodding as she seems to be explaining things to him and while she loves that he’s being strong, her whole world is falling apart.
“Riley. Are you okay?” Liam tugs gently on her hand.
She looks at him, almost completely unable to form words. The three of them sit in silence, Dr. Gallardo giving them minutes to digest the news before giving them anymore information.
“Will she…what…caused it?” Riley finally gets out.
“The cause is still unknown to us. There are a few risk factors involved such as family history, not enough amniotic fluid during the pregnancy, some doctors even think that is caused just by the baby’s position in the womb. There’s nothing you could’ve done to prevent it, in my medical opinion.”
“Will she need surgery? Is she in pain?” Liam asks and Riley noticeably gasps when he says the word pain.
“In most cases, those with Talipes Equinovarus do not need surgery. Usually stretching and taping help to correct the position of the foot and a brace will help keep it in place so it doesn’t revert while the bone is still soft. As for pain, it’s painless for her. Most pain comes from leaving this condition untreated.”
“Are there any comorbid conditions that are accompanied with this one?” Liam asks coolly as Riley rubs her hand over her belly.
“Hip Dysplasia has been seen but it’s not likely.”
           “What can we do now?”
“There’s not much to do before she’s born however it is still a good thing to know early on so that we can discuss post-birth treatment plans and get you both in contact with a pediatric orthopedist.” Dr. Gallardo says with a hopeful smile.
The room remains quiet for an uncomfortable amount of time before Dr. Gallardo speaks again, “Can you both tell me what you remember from what I told you?”
Riley looks at her dumbfounded, “I’m sorry?”
“It’s a way for me to know what you’ve understood from this and so I know if I need to explain something better. I just want to make sure you leave here with as many answers as you can now.”
Riley listens as Liam gives her back the information as she rubs her hand over her bump. After a few more minutes of discussion, they are cleared to leave and Liam takes some paperwork and pamphlets as they exit.
Liam watches as Riley’s attention is focused out the window as Bastien drives.
           “Riley?”
She doesn’t answer. He isn’t sure if she’s just too focused to have heard him or if she was ignoring him.
“Riley?” He reaches for her hand but she jerks it away.
           “How are you so okay?”
“Pardon?” He looks at her in disbelief.
“She just told us something’s wrong with our baby and you just sat there! Do you ever just cut the ‘stoic king act’? I sat there looking like a moron who couldn’t talk while you just chatted away!” She lashes out at him.
“I am aware what she told us and believe me I am just as upset as you. But in order for me to help her, I need to know everything about it that I can even if that means putting on my ‘stoic king’ act and just listen.” He reaches for her hand and she allows him to take it, “I’m sorry that I made you feel that way, it was never my intention. I can’t be much help to her in the future if I don’t know everything about the issue.”
“What if we can’t help her? I couldn’t even protect her and that’s my one job as her mom!” Riley starts to cry and Liam pulls her into his side.
“It’s not your fault. You did everything right. This is something we have to work through and we will be stronger for it and she’ll be fine.”
They arrive at the Beaumont Estate about half an hour later and Liam helps Riley out of the car and to the door, “Will you stay tonight?” She looks at him with heartbreak in her eyes, “Please.”
He looks at her, knowing that he can’t say no but knowing that it doesn’t look good for his current situation.
           “Of course, my love.”

3 Frequently Asked Questions by Families about Dentists
Tumblr media
Dental health is a matter of concern for most people and families. The fear of going to the family dentist in Toronto often leads them to ask lots of questions.
Let's answer the most frequent queries that parents ask their dentist before going in for a checkup.
What Is the Difference Between an Oral Hygienist and a Dental Hygienist?
Oral hygiene refers to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of teeth and gums by providing water, rinses, flossing, and brushing as well as other materials that are not capable of removing plaque from around any other area in your mouth. Dental hygiene focuses more on prevention, while oral hygiene focuses more on management (removal).
What Does a Pediatric Dentist Do?
Pediatric dentists focus on the dental needs of children. Pediatric dentists also perform preventative care for children to prevent future dental problems.
How Much Does My Child's Family Dentist Visit Cost in Canada?
In most instances, children's medical visits can cost between $20 and $50 per visit in Canada. Private care usually costs more than public care.
Your healthcare plan plays a role in your child's visit costs. Some plans cover up to 80% of the cost of medical visits, while others cover only 50%. These numbers change depending on your circumstances, so you must research coverage options before visiting the doctor or hospital with your child.
Why Do Dentists Ask About Medical Histories?
Dentists must make a full oral and medical history of their patients. This legal requirement ensures they don't miss any underlying medical conditions that can put the patient's health at risk.
All new patients should provide dental providers with their medical history from the past five years. Certain medical conditions and diseases can be contagious and cause oral health problems.

Even Covid-19 May Not Be Causing Your Doctor To Wash His Hands
By MICHAEL MILLENSON
If you think the grim coronavirus death toll is causing health care workers everywhere to always wash their hands, think again.
A recent research letter published in The Journal of Hospital Infection examined whether it’s “possible to achieve 100 percent hand hygiene compliance during the Covid-19 pandemic.” The medical center involved in the research, Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, had reached a pre-Covid-19 hand hygiene rate of over 75 percent.
Yet the hospital’s goal of complete compliance proved surprisingly elusive. In one pediatric ward devoted to suspected or confirmed Covid-19 patients, doctors and nurses followed hand hygiene rules 100 percent of the time, but in another ward with similar patients and staff, compliance was 83 percent, or about one-fifth less.
Given Covid-19’s risk to providers as well as patients, this was “unexpected,” the researchers admitted. Most Popular In: Healthcare
Where Coronavirus Is More Likely To Be Airborne, 5 Places To Avoid

Kidneys And Covid-19: Renal Manifestations Of The Novel Coronavirus
The Queen Mary study supports what infection control experts have long maintained: awareness isn’t enough. Doctors and nurses, particularly during a pandemic, understand that hand hygiene is “the most important intervention” to reduce the staggering death toll from infections, as the American Journal of Infection Control put it.
Still, cautions Chris Hermann, a physician and founder of the company Clean Hands-Safe Hands, “Hand hygiene is a simple concept, but to change it is more complex.”
There have been literally hundreds of studies on how to get health care workers to consistently wash their hands, with interventions running the gamut from reminder signs to electronic monitoring.  Yet clinicians at U.S. hospitals pre-Covid properly cleaned their hands “less than half the times they should,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Even with Covid concerns at the top of mind, doctors and nurses may not perceive when they forget to wash or fail to properly follow the guidelines properly. This misplaced certainty is known as the “overconfidence effect.” It was memorably lampooned by humorist Garrison Keillor in stories about the fictional town of Lake Woebegon, where “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.”
Unfortunately, our national effort to dispel the illusion of hand hygiene competence is truly woebegone. The CDC doesn’t track hospitals’ hand hygiene rates, and neither the government nor private accrediting groups requires hospitals to even reach a certain compliance level. It’s enough to show that you have an improvement program.
Whenever individual hospitals’ hand hygiene rates do become public, it’s clear that prestige doesn’t presage protection. As the journalism group ProPublica reported in early March, just before the number of Covid deaths began to soar, “Infection control has been a recurring problem…at the first tier of treatment centers” designated by the CDC to handle an infectious disease outbreak.
In March, the Leapfrog Group’s Leah Binder and I wrote an opinion article calling for an end to the government’s hands-off approach to improving hand hygiene. For now, though, government action seems unlikely.
In just a few months, Covid-19 has brought sickness and death to untold numbers of doctors, nurses and others on the front lines of care, as well as to tens of thousands of other Americans they were valiantly trying to help. A crisis, however, cannot by itself instantly cause improvement.
“Covid, frankly, is not enough,” says Hermann.
Hermann adds that he’s skeptical that Queen Mary attained the 100 percent hand hygiene compliance it claims, noting that the use of infection control nurses and the small number of patient interactions reported suggests the rate might be much lower when there’s no one around to watch.
Nonetheless, Hermann agrees with the conclusion that the commitment “to build up a good hand hygiene culture” by the leadership of the high-performing ward was central to its success.
While it can be difficult to believe that hospital hand hygiene is still a concern post-Covid-19, what’s needed now is changing processes, not blaming people. For the sake of patients and providers alike, the effective tactics and technology that too many hospitals have eschewed, such as better training and electronic monitoring, must be urgently embraced as a matter of life-and-death.

British Cardiologist: Big Food and Big Pharma are Killing Millions of People
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Comments by Dr. Robert Lustig Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco RobertLustig.com
Recently, I shared information about the efforts of Dr. Aseem Malhotra in the UK.
Here is the complete video recording of the presentation to the European Parliament.
His presentation to the European Parliament was held Thursday, April 12 at 3 PM – 5 PM UTC+02
Dr. Aseem Malhotra spoke to the European Parliament, at the invitation of Nathan Gill MEP for Wales.
Dr. Malhotra invited top leaders in European Medicine to expose “how Big Food and Big Pharma are killing millions of people.”
Dr. Aseem Malhotra, an internationally renowned UK cardiologist and author of the Pioppi Diet, argued the case for lifestyle medicine and explaining why lawmakers need to change EU health policy.
“Prescribed medications are estimated to be the third biggest killer, after heart disease and cancer.  Bad Pharma sees millions taking drugs they don't need – destroying their lives! For years public health advice across Europe has got it dangerously wrong,” Dr. Malhotra states.
Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a leading figure in the campaign against sugar and too much medicine in the UK, and was joined by the director of the Centre of Evidence Based Medicine, University of Oxford, the past President of the Royal College of Physicians and former doctor to the Queen, a internationally known professor of Diabetes, an award winning investigative medical journalist, and an eminent UK nutritionist.
The panel exposed how the food and beverage industry and pharmaceutical companies have had a pervasive influence over policy that coerces doctors into prescribing unnecessary and potentially harmful treatments rather than providing patients with basic lifestyle solutions. In the UK, more than half of all adults take at least one prescription medication with 50% of those over 70 on at least three. It is estimated that prescribed medication is the third most common cause of death after heart disease and cancer. The panel argued that evidence-based medicine has been hijacked by major conflicts of interest at the highest levels, and revealed unscrupulous lobbying practices that drive up profits at the expense of public health.
Dr. Malhotra states: “With global health systems forecast to collapse in the next few years, two things are driving ever-increasing demand: The escalating burden of chronic disease, caused by entirely preventable lifestyle illnesses, and over-treatment, seeing millions taking drugs and undergoing surgeries that will provide zero benefit and as a result costing national economies billions.”
The unified show of force was intended to expose collusion between politicians, respected medical institutions, 'charities' and medical journals for financial gain, resulting in an epidemic of misinformation with devastating consequences for health worldwide.

Preventative Treatment in Queens, NY
Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to various dental problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, and even heart disease. One of the main reasons why oral hygiene is so important is because the mouth is a gateway to the body. Anything that lives in the mouth can easily spread to other body parts. Poor oral hygiene can allow bacteria and other germs to enter the bloodstream and cause infection.
Orthodontists can treat cavities and gum disease through a variety of methods. An Orthodontist performs orthodontic treatment to treat various dental problems, including misaligned teeth, bites, crowded teeth, crooked teeth, Gaps between teeth, etc.
Orthodontic treatment is a type of dental treatment that is used to correct teeth alignment. It can also be used to improve the overall appearance of a person's smile. Orthodontic treatment is typically recommended when a person has crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth.
Types of Orthodontic Treatment:
Various braces are available, depending on the severity of the issue. Traditional braces are the most common treatment and use metal brackets and wires to straighten teeth. An orthodontist also uses other braces such as clear aligners, Invisalign, Retainers, Palatal Expanders, ceramic braces, etc.
Tumblr media
Orthodontic Prevention
Orthodontic problems can often be avoided by starting treatment early. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. By this age, most problems with the development of the jaw and teeth can be detected. If necessary, early treatment can begin to prevent more severe problems from developing. There are many benefits to starting orthodontic treatment early on in life. One of the most important is that it can help prevent teeth from becoming crooked.
Benefits of preventative treatment
1. Early Identification
2. Improves Confidence
3. Lower risk of tooth decay
4. Ensures proper biting
With the proper orthodontic prevention, you can enjoy a beautiful smile. Talk to your orthodontist about the best ways to keep your teeth straight and healthy.
