(My) TOP Discovered Albums of the year 2019 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Here again, for the fourth year in a row! Ready to go through the list of discovered music that I have found this year. It has been quite a long year. The thing that is different from the other years is that I have felt a little bit more stressed about the list. I don’ t know why. Just is. And that is a good judgement of what my year has been about. Stress. Angst. Hardships. Fatigue. And Surprises.
I always think I won’t be able to find any new music each year. But I am always mistaken. Thousands of albums down the road. And ain’t that the best thing. Amidst the times.
And thus, a lot of the music I found this year, that has been put on this list is of the more chill side. Not anything too harsh. Just.... a stream of consciousness.
As Usual, Albums I have encountered throughout the year are listed below -with only the last five in a true top order:
40.
Mad Doctor X - Picnic with the Greys (1997)
A picnic we should all attend, -don’t forget the Oui’d!
39.
Tomb Mold – Planetary Clairvoyance (2019)
Dang, that’s death metal done well.
38.
Moor Mother - Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes (2019)
Self-explanatory.
37.
Darzamat - In the Opium of Black Veil (1999)
Good AF black metal.
36.
karl sanders - saurian meditation (2004)
Darker than you think. Hypnosis.
35.
The Dolphin Brothers - Catch the Fall (1987)
Richard Barbieri and Steve Jansen plays wonderous synth-pop akin to something... I cannot remember right now. But they are good nonetheless.
34.
Reiko Kudo - Rice Field Silently Riping In The Night (2019)
(Dis)harmonious multi-instrumental live-recording’easque music with singing and (soft) noise.
33.
Michael Stearns - M'Ocean
Michael Stearns makes the most chill music in the universe. Except for maybe that one U.F.O. trip album that can be chill in the scary cold sense.
32.
Henryk Górecki - Kleines Requiem-Lerchenmusik
Classical album of the year. Górecki always delivers.
31.
VOIGHT KAMPFF - MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN (2012)
Fast techno-trash metal band.
30.
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows - Death And Flamingos (2019)
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows is a band that will always have a special space in my heart. Their music got me through the most part of high school. The dark ambivalent songs. Yet, never forgetting the ironic twinkle in the eye.
29.
Earl Slick - Zig Zag (2003)
That edge of the seat feel of rock; next stage to come, just: SLICK.
28.
Kooba Tercu - Kharrub (2019)
You will be grateful I rec’d this jammin’ piece of fast jumping action of absurdity and happiness. :)
27.
Red Snapper - Making Bones (1998)
Trip Hop Album of The year. Seeing to what trip-hop releases there were around the time of this album’s release, I am so fucking surprised I had never heard of these before. They are just as brilliant as the all too famous Portishead, if not with an upper edge in a lot of cases.
26.
Supercar - Three Out Changes!! (1998)
Shoegaze of the year. Lovely. CHILL. Summer evening breathe’
25.
Anna Domino - East & West (1984)
Timeless synth-pop with rich textures of dreamy lyrics that ensnares you into a downtempo that.... goes up.
24.
Troy Gregory - XAVIERA (2018)
Monumental Prog.
23.
shit & shine - bad vibes (2018)
It is What it Says. Yeah I am on Acid’
22.
Datarock - Face The Brutality (2018)
Norwegian indie masters. I love Datarock very, very much. I’ve listened to them since the 2007 release Red and I don’t know a band with as much coercive pop in each track. This album was a surprise find, since I was convinced they were out of the loop.
21.
HIZAKI grace project - Curse Of Virgo (2008)
Symphonic Metal. Hizaki is a master of the guitar. Such Riffs. If you need to drain your brain to metal and feel energized but still mesmerized, this is it.
20.
Institut Für Feinmotorik - Abgegriffen (2011)
Coolest Experimental Band of the year. Go check them out on youtube. The making of the music here is truly an Experience.
19.
Deafkids - Metaprogramação (2019)
D-beat, Raw Punk, Downtempo ... band from Volta Redonda, Rio De Janeiro - Brazil. NOISE.
18.
WipEout Omega Collection OST (2017)
The wipeout games are and will forever be my favorite way of anti-gravity racing. The music to Wipeout Omega Collection is as stellar as ever, a great list of electro and techno musicians.
17.
Hammer Bros. - Police Story (1997)
Imagine being at an underground hardcore noise rave party in 1997. Imagine the beat blasts. The speed. The energy. Just the grinding shouts, the beat, and you. Ready to dive. BURN. WATER. REPEAT.
16.
AFCGT – Square Microphone Tapes
Noise rock galore. Glory. Wonderful. Gnarly. Intelligent. Different. Moody.
15.
Future Of The Left – Human Death (2013)
Great leftist lyrics. Another one of RIk’s rec’s. Just Awesome. Good Music. Hate on capitalism and its endless bringer of deaths.
14.
Molchat Doma* – Etazhi (2018)
Youtube rec of the year. Darkwave energies en masse!
13.
3.2 - The Rules Have Changed (2018)
The follow up to the infamous To The Power Of Three album from 1986 by Emerson, Lake and Berry. The first record was hated on by many, but I love it. And this very late follow up is a huge accomplishment and honoring to the late people involved. A record my dad would have liked. I just love prog music. Sigh.
12.
Saori Kobayashi - Terra Magica (2016)
Ethereal Game Music is not easy to make. Yet somehow, Saori manages it. No wonder really. She was behind Panzer Dragoon. Masterpiece album for what a tribute it is.
“Terra Magica is a love letter from Saori Kobayashi to her fans. Featuring the same rich, melodic tones that defined the iconic soundtracks of Panzer Dragoon Saga and Panzer Dragoon Orta, Kobayashi invites listeners to enter the world she has created, while encouraging them to create their very own story to match the progression of the music.“
11.
ENTROPY CREATED CONSCIOUSNESS - Impressions of the Morning Star (2018)
Symphonic Doom Metal of the year
10.
Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit (2014)
Rec of the year by @planetsedge - Rik has served several discs on this list this year.
9.
Mobile Suit Z Gundam BGM Collection (Vol.1 - Vol.3) (1985)
The title track to this animé, sung by Mami Ayukawa, and its subsequent soundtrack is probably one of the best I have heard. 80′s animé has the best soundtracks, mostly.
8.
K2 - Iron Kulture 7' (1996)
Noise artist of the year.
7.
Klaus Dinger + Japandorf (2013)
Surprise find of the year in the sense of knowing the artist in other bands (NEU! and Kraftwerk) but totally missing this somehow. Late late find. Total love. Electronic mists will seep into your ears listening to this.
6.
Beak - >>>
Pop-like krautrock. Laid back, but with thought behind it. Allé Sauvage is my fave track. Just the perfect amount of mystery and rhythm and synths. First list find of the year.
5.
The Muffs - Alert Today Alive Tomorrow
20 years ago The Muffs released this album, and I wish... the years had been kinder. This album helped me a lot though when I found it. A lot of nostalgia will arise listening to this.
Damned if you feel alright ~
4.
BIG STICK - LP (2019)
EARWORM OF THE YEAR!!! Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co Butter Calamari Co Co ButterCalamari Co Co Butttttttttttttttteeeeerrrrr.
In the bodega.
3.
Jesca Hoop - Stonechild (2019)
Indie folk niceties. Chill, interesting blend of rock and singing elements. Not mystical, but still with mysteries. Got third place because I kept remembering it so much. It penetrated my skull.
2.
Doji Morita - A Boy (1977)
This album was an early find and should be my album of the year. Morita’s voice is amongst the softest and kindest I have ever heard. And she has all the wonderful aesthetics to boot! Acoustics with accompanying strings and pianos in most of the tracks. It isn’t, because the N’1 is such an explosion of a surprise.
The third track, ふるえているネ (One who is trembling) is my favorite. I do tremble at the very thoughts expressed in this track. The bird wings at the end... yeah. Every track on this album is a masterpiece.
Music as pulling one’ s strings of the heart. That is what this album is about.
I will keep it at that with the words. No more has to be said. Just listen, you will understand.
1.
Kagami - Star Arts (2002)
Explosive, Happy, Creative, Constantly Changing Originality.
Techno. Disco. TeSco.
Toshiyasu Kagami was a genius in his genre. I’ve heard a lot of techno mixes and textures in my life, but not anything like this before.
Each track slaps you in the head and forces you to the rhythm, only for you to go.... HMMMMMMMMmmmMmmMmMMmmMMM MMMMMMMMMMMMM when the flow enters its synergies of musical delight. What else is there to say when your ears are filled with such pleasant sounds. Just when you think it won’t change up, it will change up. Impossible to predict. Dancefloor killer. Intelligent Mixes.
No philosophical analysis, only my body moving to the most energetic beat EVER.
Concrete Masterpiece. My album of the year in 2019.

My Favorite (SPN) Things
This is a collection of my favorite SPN moments/things/thoughts for @atc74‘s giveaway.
Favorite SPN Con Moments
I have several Con memories that I will never forget.
MinnCon 2016 - @fuckyou-mavhenan and I got the con bug that year and decided to go to Minneapolis since it’s a half-hour drive from my house. That con changed my love for the show in a way I never thought possible. We had a photo op with Misha and Mark Sheppard, it was glorious.
It was also the year of “A Bowfinned Fish Named Salmon Dean”, with Jared and Jensen trying to imitate what a bowfinned fish might look like.
I took a ton of pictures at that con, but that was before I learned I could rent a better lens so they’re not the best pictures. It was also before I learned how to use Lightroom. And we were pretty far from the stage. But it was an amazing first con.
MinnCon 2017 - @fuckyou-mavhenan returned in August of 2017 and we planned the weekend down to the fifteen minute window with our Silver weekend passes. Except we never planned on any photo ops. In fact, we rolled up to the ticket table to check ops Friday morning and when we saw the very last J2 op, we bought it on the spot.
I learned just how sweaty Jared is that day. After the picture was taken, I said out loud, “Wow you really are sweaty,” because my arm was damp from having hugged him. He apologized for being “gross” and I said, “oh honey, it is so not gross” and he thought that was hilarious, then proceeded to smother me in a hug. I died. It was also glorious.
Pictures from that con were meh. Again, forgot to rent a better lens and still wasn’t using Lightroom, although our seats were nominally better.
MinnCon 2018 - Insanity. Like, just dumb. First, they moved the con to November, which was fucking stupid because @fuckyou-mavhenan couldn’t come up. Then I find out it’s the last time they’re going to be in Minneapolis so I freaked out and bought tickets near the end of February. Gold weekend and a Jared photo op.
Two weeks later I found out I was pregnant. And when I did the math, I realized I’d be just shy of 37 weeks pregnant. A couple months before the con I decided to book a hotel room in downtown Minneapolis instead of driving back and forth all weekend (because pregnant). And about two weeks prior to the con, VIP and M&G auctions went up so I bid on both and won both (VIP and a Jared M&G).
And then the weekend came. I was huge. I was uncomfortable, exhausted, and rocking some serious sinus bullshit (because pregnant). But all that ceased to matter for a number of reasons. First, VIP was a-fucking-mazing. Second, I met @atc74. For realsies. In person. And we kicked it together during the SNS. And Rob kissed us. :3
Then there was CUPCAKEPOCALYPSE
I will never forget that. Mainly because I’m still mad my pregnant ass did not get to eat one of those cupcakes.
I guess he made up for it here:
I cannot put into words how wonderful of an experience his photo op was. Every time I saw Jared on Sunday, from the start of his M&G, to the photo op, to his VIP M&G, and at last during his autograph, he either congratulated me on the baby or touched my belly and asked me about her. At least twice he told me I looked stunning and it reminded him of when Gen was pregnant with Tom. I don’t know how I kept my shit together.
And the pictures I took! I rented a damn nice lens and learned how to use Lightroom! I was so happy with how they turned out.
VegasCon 2019 - I went to Vegas for a bachelorette party. I had no intention of going to the con. It just... happened. The bachelorette group kind of wanted to do their own things on Sunday afternoon because we all paid a lot of money to go out there and the bride-to-be was super cool about it. So when I had nothing to do, I caught a cab to the Rio and figured I’d just browse the vendor room. My VIP liaison from Minneapolis was also there and so I met up with her to chat a bit, which was rad.
And then I ended up with a wristband. I won’t say how, but I did. It took me about half an hour to realize that, with a wristband, I’d be able to go buy a photo op or autograph. I was immediately pissed because Jared’s op had just wrapped and I so very much wanted to talk to him again, but all of his ops (solo or otherwise) were sold out. So at least I didn’t miss out on that.
But I did end up with a Rob & Rich op! I told them that the last time I’d seen them was in Minneapolis back in November in VIP and I was about to say “when I was pregnant”, but Rob said, “YES. YOU WERE PREGNANT. How’s the baby?!”
Ya’ll, I died. Rob is amazing.
I have more favorite con moments. But these are the ones that stuck out.
Favorite SPN Tumblr Moments
I have to admit, I’m a terrible member of the fanfic community on Tumblr. I hardly ever read fic. So, the only thing I’ll mention about fanfic is how grateful I am for the people that have taken the time to read, reblog, and comment on my work. I cannot thank you all enough (and ya’ll know who you are).
One of the slightly embarrassing things about the SPN fandom on Tumblr is how much you asshats have outed me and my thirst for Jared. I’ve been live blogging this season (and a bit of last season) and whenever I comment about how much I love Sam/Jared doing pretty much anything ya’ll gotta reblog THAT post. Thanks for that.
But the most amazing thing I cannot put into words is how awesome it was to meet people from this fandom now. @atc74, @sis-tafics, @saxxxology, @just-a-touch-of-sass-and-fandoms, @from-trista-with-love, @samsexualdeancurious, and @emptywithout, it was wonderful meeting you all. (I hope I didn’t miss anyone!)
Favorite SPN Show Moments/Characters/Things
So it’s no secret that Sam is my favorite character from the show. But there really isn’t a character I didn’t enjoy. Even the villains are epic on this show. And most of them were so wonderfully grey that I could never hate them for long.
I don’t think I can pick a singular favorite moment from the show. There are too many awesome pop culture references, too many awesome guest spots, and so many excellent story lines/plots.
I’m a sucker for lore, so I love things like Sam wielding Mjolnir and werewolves and djinn. I dig tulpas (”it’s notta tulpa”) and enochian brass knuckles and angel blades and Ruby’s knife.
I’m also a huge fan of cinematography, so we when we get those beautiful shots of these beautiful actors’ faces just popping out of the darkness (very much like a Caravaggio panting) I drool a little.
But if there is only one thing that really fueled my love for this show, it’s the damn gag reels. I thought I liked Sam before, but seeing how absolutely dumb Jared is on set intentionally fucking up takes made me love him even more. And I have an absolute favorite gag reel moment. Two, specifically, both from this season:
“Trusting a fart after 40.”
I fucking died.
Also:
@aborddelimpala, thank you for that gifset. I cried laughing so hard at this shit.
So that’s it. That’s all of my weird contributions to this incredibly unique fandom. I love you all and I love everything this show has given us. I can’t imagine my life without it.

This segment features artists who have submitted their tracks/videos to She Makes Music. If you would like to be featured here then please send an e-mail to [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!
Zoe Blaire
Zoe Blaire is a singer-songwriter, model and teen boss. The triple-threat just released her debut single ‘Days Like These’ produced by a Grammy Award Winner and inspired by the pandemic and the new darkness that it created: Love, loss, loneliness, depression and self-image. Besides her new music launch, the 14-year old has been busy shooting national commercials and running her own beauty line. She is definitely one to watch! Listen to ‘Days Like These’ below.
Joules Rio
Joules Rio is a singer-songwriter based on the beautiful coast of Florida at Cocoa Beach. Her eclectic style has been called "retro music from the future". She creates her unique sound on bass guitar, keyboards, and with a strong but sensual vocal style. Joules Rio’s limitless style is not bound to one genre or category. Each song tells its own story. Some are rocking hard, others are dancing and shimmering. Latest single ‘I Love My Body’, is “a trap/pop/rock hybrid about the joyous human experience!” Listen below.
Joules Rio · I LOVE MY BODY
CHAMIE
Brand new Los Angeles based CHAMIE, the collaboration of husband and wife team Jes Marie and Joe Sobalo Jr, are hot out of the studio with their single, ‘Attitude’. An electropop anthem featuring driving beats, funky synthesizers, and ultra confident female vocals, ‘Attitude’ is a fresh new sound on the dance/pop music scene. CHAMIE is versatile and can shift their vibe from everything from indie pop to tropical reggae with ease and confidence. Electronic beats, fuzz bass, and rhythmic guitars are the bedrock of their music, combining with unique, eclectic synths that provide the ‘ear candy’ CHAMIE is quickly becoming known for. Listen to ‘Attitude’ below.
Stephanie Heitz
Stephanie Heitz is a singer-songwriter from the Midwest US. She released her debut EP, Dark to Light in 2019 after traveling through a very difficult season. She's been consistently releasing singles ever since as an independent artist. Stephanie has an unmistakable R&B style. Her music tells the story of personal life experiences with lyrics that are vulnerable, raw, and relatable. She's been enjoying collaborating with musicians from around the globe, and has plans to release lots of new music in 2021. Stephanie's latest single, ‘Grace’ challenges the listener to ponder a very important question. Her greatest goal with songwriting is to encourage others to know they're not alone in their struggles. Listen below.
Jamythyst
Jamythyst is a new DIY ElectroPop artist. Her music is '90s-inspired pop infused with R&B, Freestyle, and House. She is the sole writer, producer, and performer — spending days and nights creating alone in her basement studio. She has been described as "Paula Abdul meets Nine Inch Nails”. Her new single ‘Melt My Face’ is an ode to '90s dance pop — and that feeling you get when the DJ plays a song that melts your face no matter what kinda mood you're in. Listen below.
Moodbay
Moodbay are an electro-pop duo that likes to explore various sonic landscapes from vintage disco grooves, lo-fi hip-hop textures to moody layers of analogue synth. They are vocalist-songwriter Anna Stephens and producer-songwriter Alfie Cattell. Latest single ‘Psycho’ is “a tug of war between two people,”explain the duo. It's a love-hate situation, and each feels misunderstood by the other. The theme of good and evil is apparent throughout. Yet though actions are irreversible, there's always hope for change. Someone can turn those actions around by becoming a better version of themselves. And the last thing they want is to be called 'crazy' because that would be discouraging! As the lyric goes: ‘just call me by my name’... “This is a dreamy layered synth-pop track that doesn't mess about and is brimming with emotion. The delicate piano in the verses contrast well with the thick powerful choruses that soar with interweaving vocals and synth lines. The production is warm and full-bodied but never over-bearing. Listen below.
Moodbay · Psycho
Elizabeth Karly
Elizabeth Karly has been writing poetry since she was 15 years old. When she was young she would sing constantly and dream about putting on big concerts with crowds singing back to her. During the pandemic, she finally began to work on music. “I started out with no equipment at all; just my phone and a cheap pair of earbuds,” she says. “It took me months, but I finally completed my first song: ‘Your Party’! It was recorded in the back of my car, still just using a phone and earbuds. She continues: "’Your Party’ It is a fun, indie pop song about pressures felt when confronted by toxic people, and just the lies and secrecy within unhealthy relationships.” Listen below.
Jess McAllister
The music of Exeter-based Jess McAllister spans from free-spirited, nostalgic folk, through to rhythmic, gutsy blues, rock and pop. Switching effortlessly on stage between electric guitar, banjo and piano, she blends her honey-dipped vocals and her craft of songwriting with live performances filled with spontaneity, passion and pure heart. Her new single 'The Bushiest of Beards' is a fun revenge story, stemming from when a man with a beard bullied her for a prolonged period of her life, stripping her of all self esteem. It is a song for anyone who had been made to feel unworthy, and although the anti-bullying nature of the track is deadly serious though, the song uplifts with humour and joy. Listen below.
Jess McAllister · The Bushiest Of Beards - Explicit Version
Gabrielle Ornate
Gabrielle Ornate crafts bohemian pop/rock tracks for the modern world. Ethereal lyrics with an empowered edge meet walls of epic synthesisers, adorned with riffing guitar and bass, in a kaleidoscopic sound world. Think Imogen Heap and Bat For Lashes meet Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell. Gabrielle’s debut single, ‘The March of the Caterpillars’, mastered by John Davis at Metropolis Studios, is a fable about respecting one’s roots; blossoming the connection between worlds. As life continually evolves, like how a caterpillar transitions into a butterfly, one must not forget the genesis of their journey. Listen below.

Pretty Preachers Club
Pretty Preachers Club are a bedroom-pop-style emerging duo from Glasgow. Their debut EP Going Nowhere Fast was well received. Their second EP Romance and Adolescence is an experimental step up from their previous releases, a compilation of classical, indie pop, folk and 80s synth. The pair have previously stated in a number of interviews that their main influences are indie artists such as Pheobe Bridgers, Beabadoobee, LANY, Pale Waves, The 1975 and Sports Team. ‘Just Tell People How You Feel’ is their new single. Hannah says of the release: “The lyrics in this song are almost a dream-like scenario of ideal love. It’s a reminder to myself to try and not hold your feelings back, cause what’s the point? It’s almost a goal to myself to fully be able to relate to every lyric in this song... not quite there yet.” Listen below.

(From our Summer 2019 Issue)
Austin is warming up and you need to cool off. Don’t worry—we got you. Swim first, drink second. Follow our guide for the best swimming hole + brewery combos to escape the heat and quench your thirst.
Hamilton Pool or Reimers Ranch + Family Business
Are you a planner? Fabulous, then make those reservations months in advance to assure entry into Hamilton Pool. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed the bacteria levels are in check so your experience extends beyond the short hike in and out. High bacteria = no swimming, bummer. Regardless, Hamilton Pool is a beautiful grotto to behold, and hopefully swim in. Since reservations are required, it shouldn’t be overly packed and you (no dogs) can enjoy a morning or afternoon of swimming.
Not a planner? High bacteria levels? Forgot to leave Fido at home? Don’t lose your shit—just retrace your steps down Hamilton Pool Road about a mile and turn into Reimers Ranch Park. Known best for rock climbing and mountain biking, you’ll also find some good places to dip in the Pedernales river.
Okay, you swam, and maybe hiked a little, now head back down Hamilton Pool Road and quickly you’ll find Family Business and Nate Seale’s beers. Here it’s easy to keep that outdoor-nature-vibe going as you hang out on their spacious patio or shaded picnic tables. Throw the kids in the gated playground area (so smart) and enjoy some grub from Jep’s Southern Roots, their on-site Cajun food trailer. The natural go-to is the Hamilton Pale Ale, but hey, they’re about bringing family together, so everyone is sure to find a match... and even Fido is welcome.
Blue Hole + Middleton
Another well-known watering hole outside of Austin proper resides in Wimberley. You’ll need reservations to get in during peak season, and be prepared to haul your stuff a ways from parking into the preserved park/swimming area. The creek at Blue Hole is shaded by impressive cypress trees, so not only is it chilly, but there’s very little sun shining through to warm you up (our advice: go when it’s really hot so you can’t wait to take a dip). Feeling adventurous? Take a chance on the rope swing. Although your dog isn’t allowed, picnics and kids are, so come prepared to warm back up on the lawn and relax a while.
After your reservation is expired, or you feel like you’ve got your money’s worth, take Ranch Road 12 south to Middleton Brewing. Middleton offers outdoor, indoor, and rooftop options and is family and dog friendly. In fact, don’t go if you don’t like dogs—there are a lot. They typically have a Slingin’ Sliders on site for you dummies who didn’t take our advice of packing a picnic, and if you stay late enough, your extended drinking may be rewarded with some live music.
Jacob’s Well + Vista
Wimberlinians are lucky to have not one, but two ‘grammable, natural swimming holes. Jacob’s Well, a consistent 68 degree artesian spring, is pretty small but fabulous for soaking your hot feet as you sit on the ledge, or for making a big splash as you launch off the rocks into the submerged cave. We only recommend this hole for brave big kids and adventurous adults who will take advantage of jumping into the cold water, otherwise you’ll get your picture, pretend you had an amazing time (when in reality you dipped your toe in, shrieked it was too cold and complained that it was too crowded) then leave to get your beer on.
So after you get that ‘gram, head to Vista for an equally photo-worthy taproom and views. Avoid getting derailed by the wineries along the route or the smells wafting out of the Salt Lick. You’ll be rewarded with the likes of the sessionable Adair Kolsch, delicate Le Saison Farmhouse Ale, or their ever-changing board that seems to always include something new or barrel-aged. At Vista, you’ll find bountiful outdoor space, picnic tables, swings and a playscape, delicious offerings from their grill, and if planned correctly, a perfect hill country sunset to cap your day.
Georgetown Blue Hole + Rentsch
Pinthouse Round Rock not far enough north for you? Head further up I-35 to Georgetown’s Blue Hole, a lagoon on the south fork of the San Gabriel river. There’s a bit of free parking close to the popular El Monumento restaurant, so plan to go early and bring your big ‘ol tube if you’re willing to risk injury on the natural limestone slide (when the water’s flowing). This swimming hole has something for everyone—deep enough to jump in on one side of the dam, and great for cooling off your feet on the other.
Once you’re ready to leave the other river rats behind and have worked up a good thirst, a short seven minute drive will get you to Rentsch Brewery. First, grab a refreshing Blonde or Hefe (or Radler if you’re feeling fancy), then cool off under their large shade tree and big mister fans—it’s hot y’all. But don’t feel guilty, they brew their beer using 100% renewable energy... so surely their A/C and fans are powered the same way?
Barton Springs + ABGB
Ahhhh, Barton Springs—the obvious choice for locals and tourists alike. Open year-round, this spring-fed, freakin’ cold pool has 900 feet of blue water, a diving board for you to make a fool of yourself, and sprawling lawns begging you to spread out and sunbathe (tops optional) or doze in the shade.
And what goes best with a classic Austin swimming hole? Classic, no, institutional ATX brewers: Amos and Swifty, now complemented by Kim, who produce award-winning lagers to enjoy in the ABGB biergarten, a quick drive south down Lamar to Oltorf and across the tracks. Bring your dog, order a pie, enjoy live music... this is Austin y’all. What’s more is ABGB’s Hell Yes Project lends a hand (lots of hands) in keeping Barton Springs clean, so order another Hell Yes or Rocket 100—it’s like patting them on the back for all their hard work while quenching your thirst. Win-win.
McKinney Falls + Live Oak & Hi Sign
McKinney Falls State Park, located just west of the airport, has two swimming areas: the Upper and Lower Falls. The Upper Falls is definitely more exciting. Planning to take a jump in? We recommend doing some exploration of what’s below beforehand to keep safe from submerged rocks—don’t be a dumbass. You won’t be able to enjoy that beer later if you crack open your skull or break your leg. Choosing to play it safe? Head to the Lower Falls.
Afterward, a quick drive will get you to one of Austin’s oldest running breweries, Live Oak. The expansive biergarten can yield a long, long..long afternoon of drinking, and possibly a game of disc golf (if you’re into that). Not to mention, who doesn’t want a Hefe on a hot summer day? Still not ready to go home? Just down the road is Hi Sign, where you can kick off your shoes and relax in a hammock while drinking another cool one. From swimming to beer, all are family and dog friendly, so do it right and make a day of it. You can thank us later.
Blanco River + Real Ale
Leave the city behind and head west my friend... west about an hour to Blanco River State Park, right along Highway 281. Come prepared to float, kayak, or swim... but bring something to wear on your feet if you’re the “eww, what was that?” kind of person or just don’t want to bust your ass walking across the dam. The park offers kayaks for rent, otherwise you’re on your own to enjoy the river, which includes bountiful picnic tables, grassy areas, and shade for relaxing.
Afterward, grab a fresh draft at Real Ale, just a few short miles back up 281. Of what? Rio Blanco pale ale, obvs, or stick to one of our refreshing favorites: Hans’ Pils. While you’re there, pick up a big green Hans’ tube for your next river outing, and be sure to enjoy some free classic arcade games on the brewery overlook.
Bull Creek + Austin Beerworks
If you slept in too late to make it out-of-town, Bull Creek can help you escape the heat and satisfy your need for a dip. As long as there’s water flowing, bacteria levels should be in check. Near the southern entrance there are some good jumping rocks if the water levels are high enough. There’s also a well-worn natural rock slide for the kid in all of us.
Some sections can get crowded by the afternoon, but don’t worry... in no time you can be at Austin Beerworks sipping one of their summertime must-have beers, Einhorn, or another of their taproom only seasonals. ABW is a family-friendly place that knows how to party and offers endless fresh buttery popcorn in their taproom. Grab a bite from their food truck, CAN-tina, to round out your afternoon. Maybe even pick up a new tank, hat, or sunnies to rep this quintessential Austin brewery.
Hippie Hollow + Oasis
Here’s the cold hard truth: I grew up hearing about Hippie Hollow, but haven’t actually been there. But go, clothing is optional, I’m sure it’s a lovely swim... and especially refreshing if you do it sans suit. Rock that dad bod.
Afterward, hit up Oasis Texas Brewing (not to be confused with The Oasis—unless you want overpriced queso). Here you can enjoy the view while enjoying the brew (ooh, that’s catchy). Grab a Meta Modern Session IPA or Luchesa Lager, along with some food from their Craft Kitchen, then post up—seriously, like you’re Dennis Rodman, desperate for the rebound—so you can score a clear line of site for that money sunset. (For you kids, Dennis Rodman was a basketball player before he became our unofficial ambassador to North Korea.)
Barton Creek Greenbelt/Sculpture & Twin Falls + St. Elmo
The Barton Creek Greenbelt hikes to Sculpture and Twin Falls are two (overly) popular routes to some nice waterfalls... if Austin’s had any recent rain. If not, you will sadly hike out and be greeted by a couple of fat, hungry mosquito pits. When it’s flowing, these are some nice swimming areas with waterfalls, rocks for jumping, or areas to just sit and soak in the sun. Remember, this is a hike, so leave the flops at home and opt for something more substantial.
Once you’ve had your fun in the sun, head over to St. Elmo for a refreshing and super crushable Carl Kolsch. Ready for more? With a solid and constantly changing board, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Their permanent food truck, Soursop, has rich, flavor-packed pan-Asian dishes... and when they say spicy—believe it. While you’re drinking and mowing down some wings, pick up a board game to pass the time, relax outside with your pup, or plan to hit up their Grassy Thursday, a sure hit.

Fashion Meets Music: Eastern European Summer Festivals With Best Streetstyle This summer marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, an event that has changed cultural landscape. Over thirty musical acts performed for nearly half a million people whose style turned flower power into a major fashion moment. Contemporary music festivals like Coachella or Rock in Rio owe their massive popularity and social relevance (Beychella!) to the post-Woodstock influences. Music festivals have played an important part in cultural diplomacy, particularly in the decades after the Cold War. Sopot Festival in Poland and Golden Orpheus in Bulgaria were two major music events of the socialist era. Throughout the 1970’s and ‘80s musicians behind the Iron Curtain cherished limited opportunities to play with their Western peers while style-hungry festival goers flocked to the Baltic and Black Sea coasts, respectively, for the latest in Eastern European fashion. Among the occasional “western” headliners were Tina Turner, Boy George, Whitney Houston, Elton John and other iconic stars. Nowadays, thousands of people travel to Eastern Europe for a range of music festivals famous in equal measure both for its guest lineups and amazing streetstyle. Half-Life, Dragon's Lair & A NEW PLAYER HAS ENTERED THE GAME !!!
This week the Nerds welcome Dev-i-boy to the group. Dev-i-boy is also known as Brad, a Brisbane game developer, who we interviewed around a year ago. Check that one out too, it's a good one and it'll be in the show notes below.
Professor and Dev-i-boy are gushing over Half Life: Alyx, despite a massive lack of Valve Index availability in Australia. Why, Valve, why?. HL:Alyx also doubles as an online lecture platform, a Cover your Cough training simulator and apparently, a generally good game.
DJ wants to see the Dragons Lair movie. Ryan Reynolds has been cast in a live action remake of a classic animated Laserdisc game from 1983. Don Bluth is on board, so it should be something interesting to watch.
Once again, the Nerds take on the topic of dinosaur chickens. Professor rants about the software design skills of Dennis Nedry and Dev-i-boy thinks there's no point in bringing back dinosaur chickens. But imagine the drumsticks on those chooks.
As usual, we cover the games of the week and remember some famous figures who passed away this week.

Shout Outs
29 March 2020 - Alan Merrill, ‘I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll’ Songwriter dies at 69 - https://deadline.com/2020/03/alan-merrill-dead-coronavirus-i-love-rock-n-roll-songwriter-joan-jett-and-the-blackhearts-obituary-1202895407/
Merrill was a member of the band The Arrows along with drummer Paul Varley and guitarist Jake Hooker. While in the band, he wrote the song “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” which the band released in 1975. The song would later become a chart topper for Joan Jett & The Blackhearts in 1982. In an interview with Songfacts, Merrill said he wrote the song as "a knee-jerk response to the Rolling Stones' 'It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)'." This version was first released as a B-side, but was soon re-recorded and flipped to A-side status on a subsequent pressing of the record. Arrows performed the song in 1975 on the Muriel Young-produced show 45, after which Young offered Arrows a weekly UK television series, Arrows, which was broadcast on ITV starting in March 1976. Joan Jett saw the Arrows perform "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" on their weekly UK television series Arrows while she was touring England with the Runaways in 1976. She first recorded the song in 1979 with two of the Sex Pistols,Steve Jones and Paul Cook. He died from complications arising from COVID-19 at the age of 69 in Manhattan, New York City.
29 March 2020 - Krzysztof Penderecki dies at 86 - https://deadline.com/2020/03/krzysztof-penderecki-dies-composers-work-used-in-the-exorcist-and-the-shining-was-86-1202895207/

His music was used in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, Peter Weir’s Fearless, David Lynch’s Wild at Heart and Inland Empire in addition to The Exorcist and The Shining. Pop music also revered Penderecki. Artists ranging from Kele Okereke of Bloc Party and Robbie Robertson of the Band to Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead were fans. He died from a long illness at the age of 86 in Kraków.
31 March 2020 – MDK2 turns 20 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MDK2
MDK2 is a 2000 third-person shooter, action-adventure video game developed by BioWare and published by Interplay Entertainment for the Dreamcast,Windows and PlayStation 2. It is a sequel to the 1997 game MDK. First released for the Dreamcast in March 2000, it was later released for Windows in May, with newly selectable difficulty levels and the ability to manually save. The game begins moments after the end of the original MDK. MDK2 received generally positive reviews across all systems, with critics praising the graphics, variety of gameplay styles, level design, boss fights, the game's sense of humor, and its fidelity to the original MDK. The most commonly criticized aspects of the game were the difficulty level, which was felt to be too high, and the platforming sections, which many critics found frustrating and too exacting.
Remembrances
30 March 1962 - Philip Showalter Hench - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Showalter_Hench
American physician. Hench, along with his Mayo Clinic co-worker Edward Calvin Kendall and Swiss chemist Tadeus Reichstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1950 for the discovery of the hormone cortisone, and its application for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The Nobel Committee bestowed the award for the trio's "discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects." His speech at the banquet during the award ceremony acknowledged the connections between the study of medicine and chemistry, saying of his co-winners "Perhaps the ratio of one physician to two chemists is symbolic, since medicine is so firmly linked to chemistry by a double bond." In addition to the Nobel Prize, Hench received many other awards and honors throughout his career. He also had a lifelong interest in the history and discovery of yellow fever. He died from pneumonia at the age of 69 in Ocho Rios.
30 March 2004 – Michael King - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_King
New Zealand popular historian, author, and biographer. He wrote or edited over 30 books on New Zealand topics, including the best-sellingPenguin History of New Zealand, which was the most popular New Zealand book of 2004. King was well known for his knowledge of Māori culture and history. New Zealand Listener, one of New Zealand's most popular weekly magazines, dubbed King "the people's historian" for his efforts to write about and for the local populace. He died from a traffic collision at the age of 58 in near Maramarua,Waikato.
30 March 2008 - Dith Pran - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dith_Pran
Cambodian photojournalist, he was a refugee and survivor of the Cambodian genocide and the subject of the film The Killing Fields. In 1975, Dith and The New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg stayed behind in Cambodia to cover the fall of the capital Phnom Penh to the Communist Khmer Rouge. Schanberg and other foreign reporters were allowed to leave the country, but Pran was not. Due to persecution of intellectuals during the genocide, he hid the fact that he was educated or that he knew Americans, and he pretended that he had been a taxi driver. When Cambodians were forced to work in labour camps, Dith had to endure four years of starvation and torture before Vietnam overthrew the Khmer Rouge in December 1978. He coined the phrase "killing fields" to refer to the clusters of corpses and skeletal remains of victims he encountered during his 40-mile (60 km) escape. He gained worldwide recognition after the 1984 release of the film The Killing Fields about his experiences under the Khmer Rouge. He was portrayed in the film by first-time actor Haing S. Ngor (1940–1996), who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 65 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Famous Birthdays
30 March 1820 – Anna Sewell - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Sewell
English novelist. She is well known as the author of the 1877 novel Black Beauty, which is now considered one of the top ten bestselling novels for children ever written, although it was intended at the time for an adult audience. During this time her health was declining; she was often so weak that she was confined to her bed. Writing was a challenge. She dictated the text to her mother and from 1876 began to write on slips of paper which her mother then transcribed. The book is the first English novel to be written from the perspective of a non-human animal, in this case a horse. Although it is now considered a children's classic, Sewell originally wrote it for those who worked with horses. She said, "a special aim was to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses". In many respects the book can be read as a guide to horse husbandry, stable management and humane training practices for colts. It is considered to have had an effect on reducing cruelty to horses; for example, the use of bearing reins, which are particularly painful for a horse, was one of the practices highlighted in the novel, and in the years after the book's release the reins became less popular and fell out of favour. She was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
30 March 1853 – Vincent Van Gogh - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_van_Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh, Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. His reputation began to grow in the early 20th century as elements of his painting style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. He attained widespread critical, commercial and popular success over the ensuing decades, and is remembered as an important but tragic painter, whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings. On 30th March 2020, his painting titled The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring, was stolen from the Singer Laren museum in Laren, North Holland. It was stolen in an overnight smash-and-grab raid on a museum that was closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. He was born in Zundert.
30 March 1930 - John Astin - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Astin

He is best known for starring as Gomez Addams in The Addams Family, reprising the role in the television film Halloween with the New Addams Family and the animated series The Addams Family. Notable film projects include West Side Story, Freaky Friday, National Lampoon's European Vacation and Teen Wolf Too. His second wife was actress Patty Duke and he is the adoptive father of Duke's son, actor Sean Astin. Astin is director of the Theater Arts and Studies Department and Homewood Professor of the Arts at Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater, which offers an undergraduate minor program. He was born in Baltimore,Maryland.

29 March 1979 – Another Brick in the Wall, Part II hits number one - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_1980
"Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" was released as a single, Pink Floyd's first in the UK since "Point Me at the Sky". It was Pink Floyd's only number-one hit in the United Kingdom, the United States, West Germany and several other countries. The single sold over 4 million copies worldwide. "Part 2" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Rock Duo or Group. The lyrics attracted controversy. The Inner London Education Authority described the song as "scandalous", and according to Renshaw, prime minister Margaret Thatcher "hated it". Renshaw said: "There was a political knee-jerk reaction to a song that had nothing to do with the education system. It was [Waters'] reflections on his life and how his schooling was part of that." The single, as well as the album The Wall, were banned in South Africa in 1980 after it was adopted by supporters of a nationwide school boycott protesting racial inequities in education under apartheid.

On March 31, 1999, the writing and directing sibling team of Lana and Lilly Wachowski release their second film, the mind-blowing science-fiction blockbuster The Matrix. Filmed for $70 million, The Matrix was a stylish, innovative and visually spectacular take on a familiar premise–that humans are unknowing inhabitants of a world controlled by machines–central to films such as Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Matrix starred Keanu Reeves as a computer hacker who learns that human-like computers have created a fake world, the Matrix, to enslave the remaining humans while keeping them in the dark about their dire fate. Packed with slow-motion camera tricks and references from a myriad of sources–including comic books, the Bible, Lewis Carroll, Eastern philosophy and film noir—The Matrix also stunned viewers with its Hong Kong-style fight scenes, choreographed by the martial-arts master Yuen Wo Ping and performed with the help of invisible wires allowing the characters to fly through the air. Greeted with enthusiasm by computer-gaming fanatics and mainstream audiences alike, The Matrix earned a staggering $470 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards, for Best Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

12 Best Places To Visit in January 2020
The Christmas holiday season is a whirlwind of visiting, shopping and partying. Once the rum and egg nog haze has lifted and you’ve come out of your turkey coma, it’s time to start thinking about somewhere to travel (detox?!) after the busy festive season. If you’re looking for the best places to visit in January, this list has you covered.
December is meant for getting together with friends and family, but after that, it’s time to find the best places to go in January so you can recoup and (if you’re from the northern hemisphere), take a break from the freezing cold weather.
There are numerous places to visit in January, but in this post I’ll list the top 12 for 2020 based on price and things to do. Plus, I’ll list a mix of beach destinations and winter holidays.
Time to book your trip for January!
1. Argentina
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Weather is great
Costs are low in Argentina right now thanks to a recent currency drop
It’s hiking and fly fishing season
Having spent 3 months in Argentina in 2017, it’s safe to say that we know a few things about this incredible (and large) South American destination. Whether you’re into culture and history, nature and landscapes, lakes and fishing, or cities and wine, Argentina has something for you.
Since Argentina is such a vast country, with a wide variety of landscapes and regions, it can be visited year round. But, it’s one of the best places to travel in January if you’re looking to do some hiking and fly fishing.
The northwestern region (around Salta) might be a bit wet during this time, but the rest of the country is dry and warm.
Argentina is known for being one of the top fly fishing destinations in the world. If you’re an angler, you’ll be happy to know that fly fishing season in the Lake District of Patagonia is best in January & February due to the warm weather, and ability to fish all waters during this time.
There are some stunning lakeside and riverside lodges you can stay in. Don’t miss Correntoso Lake and River Hotel and Rio Hermoso Boutique Hotel.
For trekkers, January is a good time to lace up your boots and hit the mountains of Patagonia. El Chalten in the south is dry and has temperatures around 20°C (68°F), perfect for checking out the peaks of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, exploring waterfalls, drinking beer on patios and much more.
Don’t miss nearby El Calafate and its popular Perito Moreno Glacier, which calves massive chunks of ice every few minutes! Although January is high season at Perito Moreno Glacier, you can avoid the crowds by visiting before 9:30am or after 5:00pm – take the later shuttle bus, or rent a car to explore at your own pace.
El Chalten is a great place to hike in Argentina
While you’ll miss the grape harvesting in Mendoza (it happens in February), January is still a great time to visit because the vineyards are green and the grapes are everywhere. Be prepared for hot temperatures (30°C / 80°F+), fantastic wines, great hiking around Parque Provincial Aconcagua (2 hours from Mendoza), picturesque parks and plazas, and some awesome restaurants. There are many things to do in Mendoza to keep you busy.
If all of these places to visit in Argentina aren’t enough to spark your interest, maybe the cost will.
When we travelled to Argentina in 2017, this was the rate: $1 USD = 18 Argentine Pesos
In September 2018, the rate was $1 USD = 41 Argentine Pesos.
In September 2019, the rate is $1 USD = 56.50 Argentine Pesos.
In November 2019, the rate is $1 USD = 59.68 Argentine Pesos.
This drop in currency means that travelling to Argentina would cost you a third of what it cost us in 2017! Rooms that were priced at $150 a night, now cost $50. Fantastic dinners of rib eye steaks and Malbec wine which cost us $50 for two people, now go for just $17.
Argentina isn’t known for being one of the cheapest countries to visit, but with the current instability of the peso, you can definitely save some money by visiting now and help out the local economy along the way.
Looking for accommodation in Argentina? Check out Booking.com and Airbnb for the best room rates (don’t forget your Airbnb coupon code). We personally use these two booking engines for all of our stays and highly recommend them.
2. Sri Lanka
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Great weather
Affordability
Numerous Historical Sites
This teardrop-shaped island located off the southeast coast of India is often overlooked by travellers. If you’re searching for the best places to visit in January that offer national parks, wildlife spotting, pristine beaches, fantastic cuisine, ancient sites and friendly locals, then make sure you add Sri Lanka to your holiday list. As a bonus, this country is very affordable.
Since the average temperature in January is around 30°C (86°F), you’ll want to hit up the coast! Don’t miss the stunning Unawatuna beach, with its calm water and numerous accommodation options. Just 15 minutes away, the nearby fortified town of Galle is an amazing spot to sit and watch sunset from the UNESCO listed fort walls.
Sri Lanka may be small, but it has a lot to offer travellers
If you’re into surfing, check out the breaks at Hikkadua on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Even if you’re not a surfer, this chilled out beach town offers bars, restaurants and some safe swimming spots as well.
If you’re in search of the best places to travel in January that offer historical sites, you’ll be happy to know that Sri Lanka has those in spades.
Check out Anuradhapura (where Buddhism was first introduced to the country), Sigiriya (rock fortress towering 200m above the trees below), Cave Temples of Dambulla (built in the 1st century BC, and filled with over 100 Buddha statues) and the city of Kandy (an important Buddhist city, home to Buddha’s tooth).
For a pretty mountain village, don’t miss Ella and the surrounding tea plantations and hiking opportunities, including Little Adam’s Peak.
For such a small country, Sri Lanka really does have a lot to offer travellers. And, with an average travel cost of around $30-$50 per day, per person, you really can’t go wrong.
Looking for accommodation in Sri Lanka? Check out Booking.com and Airbnb for the best room rates (don’t forget your Airbnb coupon code). These are the two platforms that we always use for booking rooms and highly recommend them.
Looking for flights to these top places to travel in January? Check out websites like JustFly to compare flights from numerous airlines. I found a return flight from New York to Colombo, Sri Lanka for just $627. If you have any questions or issues with booking, JustFly has a great support team that you can actually call to ask for help.
3. Mexico (one of the best places to visit in January for North Americans)
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Great Weather
Whale Watching Season
Proximity to North America
Costs
There are endless amazing places to visit in Mexico, and there’s really no bad time to travel here. Since this is such a large country, the climate varies depending on where you are, and which time of year you plan to visit.
Guanajuato is one of the prettiest cities in Mexico
Hurricane season runs from June to November and the cities at elevation can be cold during the winter months (November – February). But, for the most part, Mexico is a great place to visit in January if you’re looking for warm beach weather (good news if you’re from the northern hemisphere!).
Having spent over 6 months travelling through Mexico, on numerous different occasions, we rate Mexico as one of our favourite countries. This is a place where you can dine on one of the world’s best cuisines, visit a Wonder Of The World, swim in pristine water and explore Spanish colonial towns…all while not breaking the bank.
Venture away from the typical, 1-week all-inclusive holiday and explore the real Mexico. Trust me, the food and the experiences you have will be far more memorable.
If it’s cities and towns you’re after in January, places like Mexico City and San Cristobal de las Casas will be quite chilly. But, you can enjoy all of the things to do in Oaxaca City, including a visit to the impressive Monte Alban ruins, or check out the colourful towns of San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, both of which have comfortable temperatures at around 21°C (70°F).
For people from Canada, the United States and Europe, what really makes Mexico one of the top places to visit in January is the beaches!
Don’t miss Puerto Escondido or Huatulco in the State of Oaxaca. In the Riviera Nayarit, check out San Pancho, Sayulita, Bucerias and all of the beaches and other awesome things to do in Puerto Vallarta.
The sunsets in Puerto Vallarta are spectacular
Further north, explore the Baja peninsula including Cabo San Lucas and La Paz (January is the best time for whale watching.)
If you’re planning on spending time in the Yucatan, check out the powdery sands of Isla Holbox, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. At around 28°C (82°F), it’s definitely beach weather in the Yucatan!
On top of the fantastic beaches and pretty towns, the food in Mexico is one of the best. In fact, it’s listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Try the various regional dishes, the street food and of course, the drinks. Going on a food tour is one of the best things to do in Mexico.
On the budget end, expect to spend around $40 / day. For Midrange, $60+.
Looking for accommodation in Mexico? Check out Booking.com and Airbnb for the best room rates (don’t forget your Airbnb coupon code). These are the two platforms that we always use for booking rooms and highly recommend them.
4. Chicago, Illinois
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Numerous Festivals
New Year’s Eve Party
Winter Wonderland
Lower Costs
Since the USA is so large and diverse, I had to break it down and list just a city, rather than a whole country. And, when it comes to American cities, Chicago is a top choice!
There are so many fun things to do in Chicago to keep you busy for a week, or more. Since the city experiences cold winters (lows of -6 ° celcius), you’ll need to bundle up to visit, but it’s still a great place to visit in January.
During the high season (June – September), you can expect clear skies and warm temperatures…but with that comes many tourists and high room costs. When it comes to accommodation in Chicago, even if you book on Airbnb, it’s a pretty expensive city (don’t forget to claim a free $55 Air bnb coupon).
Luckily, if you visit in January, you can expect huge discounts on hotels. Occupancy is low in the winter months, meaning that hotels offer big drops in room rates – even the luxury accommodation is on special. Expect discounts of around 50% off.
Chicago is enjoyed year-round, but expect discounts and awesome events in January
Not only will you spend less on your room, but you’ll be able to avoid the crowds at the popular sights (museums, observation decks and art galleries – all of which are inside!), and enjoy one of the many festivals and events happening in January.
If you can make it to Chicago for New Year’s Eve, you’ll be able to experience an epic firework show, parties at numerous hotel bars and restaurants, and the Chicago Resolution Gala at the Navy Pier. There’s a free firework show over the lakefront and riverside, which will be choreographed and synchronized to music. Click here to learn more about New Year’s Eve in Chicago.
With numerous places to eat in Chicago, you’ll never go hungry. The city is known for its culinary delights, diverse cuisines, and Michelin starred restaurants. Brunch is a favourite of Chicagoans, and you must try the deep-dish pizza, hot dogs, popcorn and other Chicago snacks.
For those who like a cocktail or two, you can still enjoy some of the best bars in Chicago along the riverwalk. It might be cold outside, but see-through domes are erected to cover the tables and heaters are placed inside. Magical!
For foodies, you’ll be happy to know that January is Restaurant Week in Chicago. That’s right, you might have to brave the cold weather, but in return, you get to experience the city’s biggest restaurant event of the year. Click here to learn more about the festival.
For sports fans, check out a Chicago Blackhawks hockey game, or a meet-and-greet and autograph signing with some of the Cubs players at the Cubs Convention (only in January).
Bundle up and enjoy Chicago in January.
You must try the deep dish pizza in Chicago!
Looking for accommodation in Chicago? Check out Booking.com and Airbnb for the best room rates (don’t forget your Airbnb coupon code). These are the two platforms that we always use for booking rooms and highly recommend them.
5. Greece
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Have the ancient sites to yourself
Mingle with Greeks, rather than tourists
Affordability
Greece is a destination that you could return to again and again. It’s most known for its ancient sites, such as the Acropolis in Athens, and its stunning archipelagos, but there’s much more to see and do in this European nation.
If you’re looking to laze on the best beaches in Greece, with cocktail in hand, January isn’t the time to do so. But, if you’re interested in having the awe-inspiring historical sites to yourself, enjoying the local vibe in Athens, wandering around popular islands without the hordes, and doing some skiing, then January is a great month to visit.
We’ve always visited Greece in the shoulder/off-season and while it’s a bit chilly, we love exploring without the crowds.
The summer months in Greece can be unbearable due to the amount of tourists – both foreign and local – cramming together on the beach and trying to find space at the popular sites. Why not visit in January and have the place to yourself?!
Greece in the winter can be beautiful
Athens is a very comfortable temperature (around 10 °C / 50°F) during January, and the city doesn’t see much rain this month either. Walking around Athens is a great way to experience the city, and during January you won’t overheat and you’ll be able to have genuine encounters with the locals you meet along the way.
The Acropolis with the impressive Parthenon is the top site in all of Greece. If you put it on your list of places to visit in January, you’ll be able to enjoy the site in a relaxed atmosphere.
For those who simply must visit an island when travelling to Greece, a good bet in January is Santorini or Crete — both still have things going on in the winter months. However, on Santorini you won’t want to stay in the popular Oia town, but rather, choose to stay in the capital of Fira. The island isn’t dead during January, but many restaurants and bars outside of Fira shut down for the winter months.
In January you can enjoy all of the usual top things to do in Santorini, except for swimming and tanning. You will have pleasant, sunny days (15 °C / 59°F) and can enjoy sightseeing without the masses of tourists.
Hike the caldera path which runs between Fira and Oia, enjoy sampling various wines, hike around the volcano, see the ancient Akrotiri village which is now in ruins, hike the path behind Perissa to see Thera (the ancient capital), or simply enjoy a peaceful dinner with a view!
On the island of Crete, you’ll want to stay in either Heraklion, Chania, or Rethymnon, as there is a large local population here. Even though it’s chilly (16 °C), local life still moves along. Enjoy wine tastings, beachside picnics, cafe culture, and the ruins of Knossos. Try ski mountaineering, winter hiking or simply wandering around the towns.
Hotel prices in January are significantly reduced in Greece and you can enjoy having a more authentic experience.
Bundle up and enjoy Santorini in the winter – without the crowds
6. Barbados
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Warm weather
Stunning beaches
Festivals & Events
If it’s crystal clear, turquoise water and blindingly white sand beaches you crave, Barbados is a top choice when thinking about the best places to travel in January.
Spend your days lazing on the incredibly calm Carlisle Bay (one of the best beaches in the Caribbean), which is close to Bridgetown. Browne’s Beach here offers pristine swimming options, a couple of beach bars (check out Cuz’s fish cutters) and lounge chairs with umbrellas for rent.
Harbour Lights is a popular nightclub / bar, which is also located on Carlisle Bay. If you’re in Barbados for New Year’s Eve, this is a fun spot to party, complete with Carnival dancers, calypso music, rum drinks and fireworks on the beach.
Other must-visit beaches are Rockley / Accra Beach (don’t miss the boardwalk), Dover Beach, Mullin’s Bay and Paynes Bay. The best beaches in Barbados for swimming are located on the south and western side of the island, the east is much wilder and is great for (pro) surfing.
There are numerous things to do in Barbados to keep you busy. After you’re done lazing on stunning beaches, head to Oistin’s Fish Fry on Friday nights, go for a Hash (hike) one of the many trails, join a rum tour, or simply chill out at a funky beach bar with Banks Beer in hand.
In January, you can enjoy Open Homes, Jazz Festivals, Barbados Sailing Week and the Barbados Independent Film Festival.
Bajans are friendly, the food – both international and local – is amazing, sunsets are stunning and the beaches are out of this world. Barbados is definitely a top pick for the best places to visit in January.
If you’re from Canada or the USA, you can find many direct flights to Barbados. From Toronto, non-stop return flights with West Jet are just $500 and from New York, Jet Blue operates non-stop flights at around $400 return.
Barbados is in the hurricane belt, with the season running from June – November, and while you’re not guaranteed to see zero rain during the month of January, devastating storms are very unlikely.
For accommodation in Barbados, check out Booking.com and Airbnb for the best deals.
7. Whistler, B.C. Canada
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Skiing and Snowboarding
Quieter Ski Hill
Events at the Village
You’ve probably heard of Whistler, it’s where the 2010 Winter Olympics were held. If you’re into skiing or snowboarding, you’ll want to hit up Whistler and Blackcomb in January. Why? Because for a week after the holidays, it’s one of the quietest times of year at the hill.
The mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb are located right next to each other and offer 200+ trails, with runs for all levels, plus one of the largest networks of chair lifts anywhere in the world. The village is an amazing place to chill out and enjoy some fine dining, with twinkling lights in the evening.
In January, there are numerous events up at the hill as well. Check out the free fire & ice show, king of the rail, Pride and Ski Festival, and lots of racing events. Book a lodge, get a lift ticket and enjoy Whistler and Blackcomb. Click here for more about Whistler Blackcomb.
Bonus: take a 1.5 hour drive over to Vancouver and check out the events on offer. Free ice skating and polar bear swims, or light shows and hockey games…there’s something for everyone in Vancouver in January. Click here for more.
8. Tanzania
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Safaris
Beach Weather
Scuba Diving Season
This country in Eastern Africa is one of the best places to travel in January if you’re looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation, with a lower price tag.
Tanzania experiences a “long” dry season and a “long” wet season. January is considered the “short” dry season.
Empty beach in Zanzibar
You’ve probably heard of the Great Migration which is when millions of wildebeest cross Tanzania and Kenya each year in search of greener pastures and drinking water. In January, you’ll spot the wildebeest in the southern Serengeti during calving season. Expect to see lots of baby wildebeest, numerous animals grazing on the greenery, and predators lurking in the bushes…
Safaris aren’t cheap, but if you go in the short dry season (January), which isn’t as popular as the long dry season, you’ll be able to save some money on tours and lodging.
Zanzibar is a premier scuba diving destination. This island off the coast of Tanzania offers large marine life (sharks, whale sharks, turtles, dolphins, rays), excellent coral, shipwrecks and macro sightings as well. But, it’s not just about the scuba diving. Zanzibar island offers stunning white sand beaches and the historic Stone Town – with Arabic architecture, delicious cuisine and narrow alleyways for exploring.
Beautiful architecture in Stone Town
For a bit of city life, head to the capital of Dar es Salaam. This bustling city offers wonderful Indian food restaurants, huge fish markets, craft markets, museums, churches and more. Hotel rooms here are affordable, with many around $30 / night, while on Airbnb you can find apartments and guesthouse villas for around $40 / night.
Tanzania offers a great mix of city, culture, beach and wildlife. And, if you book in January, you can save yourself some cash on big ticket items.
9. Harbin, China
Why is this one of the best places to travel in January?
Ice Sculpture Festival
Every year from December to February, the northern Chinese city of Harbin has the most incredible ice sculpture festival. When we were teaching English in China, one of our friends was from Harbin and she said we must travel north to her home city and experience it. Sadly, we didn’t have a chance, but after researching and seeing photos online, I wish we had.
These aren’t just regular ice sculptures.
In Harbin, you’ll find 600,000 square meters filled with ice carvings of castles, buildings and people, some of which are as tall as 46 meters! The lighting adds to the beauty of the intricate carvings, which are best visited in the evening.
The only downside to of visiting Harbin in January is the temperature, expect -24 ° celcius. However, that’s why the sculpture festival is perfect for this city, they don’t melt! Bundle up and enjoy this winter wonderland.
10. Miami, Florida
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Great Weather
Festivals
Golf Season
Gorgeous beaches, amazing international cuisine, a latin flare and hot nightclubs – there are numerous reasons to visit Miami.
June to November is hurricane season in the Atlantic, and Miami has seen its share of hurricanes pass through. During those months, it’ll be hot and sunny – but also quite humid, with the possibility of destructive storms.
Miami is one of the best places to travel in January due to the warm weather (more comfortable than the summer months), the festivals on offer, and the fact that it’s a great season for golfing. It’s also considered the high season, as many Americans flock to this southern city to escape the cold up north.
The good news is that it’s not as humid in January making walking around Miami much more enjoyable. The sun will be shining, people will be sitting out on patios, and it’s a great time of year to be active.
It’s no secret that the south of Florida is known for being a haven for golfers, and January is considered one of the best months to hit the greens. With that comes higher price tags for a round of golf, but if you’re on a budget don’t worry, there are a few courses that won’t break the bank.
The Country Club of Miami offers 18 holes for just $45 – $48 if you’re playing on a weekend. Greynolds Golf Course offers 9 holes for just $25 including a cart. There are lots of options in the surrounding municipalities of Miami. Just hop in an Uber and head to one of the cheaper courses. Click here for more details.
Check out the Jam Cruise, a popular music festival aboard a cruise ship! Cruise from Miami to Belize, to Mexico and back to Miami, all while listening to an incredible line up of musicians. For some land based festivals, check out the South Beach Jazz Festival, Art Deco Weekend and the International Chocolate Festival. Plus, if you’re into basketball, don’t miss a Miami Heat game.
There’s always something going on in Miami.
11. Grenada
Why is this one of the best places to travel in January?
Billfish Tournament
Sailing Regattas
Great Weather
Scuba Diving
The little island of Grenada is one of the southernmost islands in the Caribbean. For such a small place, there are many things to do in Grenada to keep you busy. The reason this is one of the best places to travel in January is due to two events (and great weather!).
Don’t miss the Budget Marine Spice Isle Billfish Tournament and the Grenada Sailing Week.
Don’t miss Grenada! The scuba diving is awesome as well
Last year marked the 51th anniversary of the 4 day Billfish Tourney, and it was another successful event. Hook into dorado, tuna, blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish and more.
For the Sailing Week, the 4-day race starts at Port Louis Marina with 2 days of racing in Grand Anse and up to Secret Harbour. One day of relaxing, followed by 2 more days of racing on the east coast of Grenada, leaving from Secret Harbour.
Of course, for both events, there will be lots of parties and rum…lots of rum.
If you’re not partaking in the events, you can still watch from the shoreline as the sailboats cruise around the coast. Aside from sailing and fishing, January is a great time to visit Grenada due to the dry, warm weather.
Spend your days chasing waterfalls, lazing on one of the many pristine beaches, hiking through National Parks, and dining on freshly caught fish at sunset with a rum punch in hand. Or, head out on a scuba dive or snorkel trip with Dive Grenada, or a sailing trip with Savvy.
Hiking on one of our favourite trails in Grenada
It’s high season here, so don’t expect discounted room rates or tours. For accommodation, check out Mount Cinnamon Grenada or click here to see a list of other rooms available on the island.
12. Costa Rica
Why is this one of the best places to visit in January?
Yoga Retreats
Detox
Great Weather
Wildlife Spotting
Costa Rica is one of the best places to chill out, detox, or be active after a crazy, over-indulgent holiday season. This Central American country is known for being a great place to practice yoga, do some meditation and go surfing.
The Pacific coast and central valley of Costa Rica are dry in January, while the Caribbean coast is still wet during this month. It’s best to keep your travels to the west and central part of the country in January.
It’s the high season, which means that prices won’t be low, but you’re basically guaranteed great weather. Book early to get better prices, and try to book your trip for after the first week of January.
Sunsets in Costa Rica are pretty epic
Click here for numerous retreats which combine juice detoxes and plant-based detoxes with yoga and meditation. Get your body feeling alive and healthy again.
For those of you who want to be more active in Costa Rica, try surfing along the north pacific between Guanacaste – Nicoya. Tamarindo and Playa Grande are great spots for all levels of surfers.
If it’s wildlife you seek, January is whale watching season in Costa Rica, while sloths, toucans, turtles and dolphins can be spotted pretty much year round.
There are numerous things to see and do in Costa Rica, and due to the amazing weather and wildlife sightings, January is one of the best times to visit.
Update November 2019:

McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B, adds even moresnow, ice, lights and fun as part of 40 days of Christmas celebration in McAllen
Texas Border Business
Welcome to the official South Pole of Texas in McAllen, Texas where families will be able to revel in the spirit of Christmas in McAllen in the newly announced attraction FRIO!™, a winter wonderland of frozen fun and delight with real snow activities. The family-friendly experience is joining and expanding the joy and magic of the international award-winning McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B, by celebrating the city’s newly acquired designation, “The South Pole of Texas,” as this year’s parade theme. As if that werenʼt enough, giant, illuminated holiday displays, Broadway shows will transform Oval Park and the McAllen Performing Arts Center at the McAllen Convention Center into Santaʼs dazzling new winter home for Christmas.
“Thanks to our amazing McAllen Holiday Parade, McAllen has established itself as a major holiday destination,” said McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. “With the arrival of FRIO!™, we are taking the holidays to a whole new level this year. In addition to the snow-themed attractions, just a few of the exciting fun FRIO!™ offers includes ice skating under the stars, gingerbread decorating in a life-sized gingerbread house and of course, Santa Claus himself. All of this is surrounded by a cavalcade of beautiful holiday lights, providing families in McAllen, the Rio Grande Valley and beyond that will create lasting memories for the young and young at heart.”
#gallery-0-9 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 100%; } #gallery-0-9 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-9 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
FRIO! ™ will open to the public on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, the night before Thanksgiving and will run every day until Monday, January 6, 2020. In addition to the icy cold fun above, some other FRIO! ™ features are Penguin Plunge, a two-story ice sledding hill; snowman building workshops; developing snowball throwing skills with real snow at Santa’s Snowball Toss; A CHRISTMAS STORY™ Escape Room and much, much more, all taking place inside of the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Boulevard. Group discounts will be available for school field trips or larger groups, company Christmas parties and more. Sign up on the FRIO!™ website http://friomcallen.com for information on activities, competitions and for a chance to win tickets for you and the whole family to experience FRIO!™ this holiday season.
For the past five years, the McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B, has delighted audiences in McAllen and television viewers throughout the United States and Mexico with its creative and dazzling magical floats, soaring and captivating balloons, elite marching bands, an international roster of celebrities, stars and athletes who appear in the parade and new exciting additions each year that have not only helped the parade earn its Best Parade in the World, Best Parade in Texas and Best Event in Texas distinctions, but also, set the event apart from every other parade in Texas.
“With the McAllen Holiday Parade, the largest illuminated holiday and helium balloon parade in Texas; FRIO! ™, a wonderland of frozen fun; and dazzling light displays, it is clear that McAllenreally knows how to celebrate Christmas,” added Mayor Darling. “After a brief phone call with Santa Claus – he is, after all, the mayor of the North Pole – I told him that he was welcome to set-up shop in McAllen for the winter. That is why I am not only declaring that McAllen is the South Pole of Texas, but also, that it is the perfect theme for our magical McAllen Holiday Parade,” he concluded.
The leader of the great state of Texas seems to agree so as well, as Governor Greg Abbott sent his recognition and well-wishes to McAllen for its South Pole of Texas designation.
“Know ye that this official certificate is presented to the City of McAllen in honor of being recognized as The South Pole of Texas, under the laws of the State of Texas, with all rights, privileges and emoluments appertaining to said office, I grant this official recognition.” – State of Texas Governor’s Recognition
Parade organizers are already working on new ideas to top last year’s presentation, which opened with a first-time–ever holiday musical pre-show Extravaganza, complete with an up-and-coming Latinx Disney star, local children’s choirs and mariachi and a fireworks display that punctuated the performance perfectly.

“It has been our pleasure to work alongside the City of McAllen to host the annual McAllen Holiday Parade over the past several years. This is a premier event that captures the true essence of the holiday spirit. As such, in 2018, we were elated to have H-E-B become the title sponsor of the McAllen Holiday Parade, a designation that we’re proud to carry forward once again this year,” said Tony Gonzalez, Director of Merchandising & Marketing for the Border Region of Texas for H-E-B.
VIP stadium seating tickets and parade route seats will soon be available. Free seating, on a first-come, first–serve basis will also be available along the one and a half mile parade route, all kicking off at 6:00 p.m. from McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, 2001 North Bicentennial Boulevard on Saturday, December 7, 2019.
Finally, as an added feature to all the activity taking place at the McAllen Convention Center, Oval Park will transform into Santa’s Circle, with giant, illuminated holiday and character displays that people will be able to walk into for photos or a magical experience unlike any other. The displays will also debut on Wednesday, November 27 and run throughout the 40 days of Christmas in McAllen celebration and will be free for all to enjoy. As an added attraction, the McAllen Performing Arts Center will showcase its holiday spirit with Broadway shows that include the Blue Man Group; The Nutcracker ; The Moscow Ballet: Russian Nutcracker; A Charlie Brown Christmas; The Valley Symphony Orchestra: A Touch of Frost; and The McAllen Wind Ensemble: Tinsel and Tutus, while Santa’s Circle will host the Lighting of the McAllen Christmas Tree and the Sunset Live: Winter Concert.
The McAllen Holiday Parade is presented by H-E-B. All You Need To Know About Quick Travel Loan
Travel Season
We millennials love to work (or at least pretend to). We are so engrossed in our daily tasks, PPT presentations, client meetings, smoking breaks, unending gossip that we forget about the more important things in life, such as family, friends, pets and pizza.
Many of us promised our family that we would go on family vacation by the end of this year. Some of us might opt for spending the start of 2019 in a different country. Some might want to see the sun rise in the east (literally) or some would prefer ogling at the fireworks of Burj-Al-Dubai. We all have our individual plans and travel itinerary to follow.
Some of you might want to go on a world tour perhaps. Whatever the reason for the travel or whichever destination you want to visit, you will need funds. It is not easy for salaried individuals to keep aside some form of travel funds when there are so many priority expenses to cater to. So, what do salaried individuals do in order to go on a holiday? Apply for a travel loan of course.
What makes a travel personal loan so perfect for salaried millennials?
Travel Loan at Loan Singh
The unsecured aspect of a travel loan in itself makes it a potent financial solution in times of travel cash crunch. Suppose you remove the offline paperwork, delayed verification, repeated trips to the bank and delayed approval, from the travel loan availing process. And then you turn the process online, with only 3 documents (to be uploaded), an approximately 5-minute application process and doing all this from the confines of your home. These features, my friends, make an online travel loan even faster to avail.
An online travel personal loan is a fantastic option during times of sudden travel plans. Sometimes, your savings might not cover the cost of a complete travel holiday. You might sometimes need to supplement your emergency travel fund with a shot of cash from other sources. It is true that a number of traditional lending institutions provide travel loans. But, isn’t an online travel personal loan synonymous with quick, instant and requiring less paperwork?
So, what’s the best source of travel funds to plan a sudden ‘zindagi milengi na dobaara’ travel trip? How can you travel the world with the least of hassles and no tension? How to apply for an instant travel personal loan? Are there any online travel personal loan providers in India? The single answer to all these questions is Loan Singh.
Which are the popular beach destinations in the world?
Travel Loan Features
Travel loans are a type of personal loan. These are provided to salaried professionals who are seeking funding for travel. More and more millennials are opting for online digital lending platforms to apply for travel loan. These platforms marry the instantaneous facet of online lending along with the swift backend processing of credit underwriting.
A simple travel loan application process is further coupled by instant e-approval based on credit worthiness. Even applicants with no credit score can apply for a loan, albeit with a 6-month salary credit. Thanks to travel loans at Loan Singh, millennials can now avail up to 10 Lakh for travelling to some of the most gorgeous and stunning locales around the world.
With travel personal loan being secured in nature, you do not need any collateral, guarantor or security. The travel loan can be used to cover travel (airfare, train, bus, Uber, Ola cab etc.), sightseeing, pilgrimage, accommodation, tours, excursions and shopping. Travel personal loan can be used for either domestic travel holidays across India or a foreign trip to go see the world.
Need funds to go see any part of the world or explore India?
Travel To Sydney
There are 2 reasons why Sydney Australia is the perfect place to celebrate New Year’s eve with your family – Firstly, Sydney is the first major city in the world where the clock hits midnight. Secondly, it puts on the world’s largest display of fireworks. One set of fireworks go off at 9 pm and the other one at 12 pm. A waterfront show at the Sydney Harbour Bridge attracts viewers from all over the world. Aerial acrobatics, water show, Harbour of Light parade, flotilla of more than 40 illuminated boats, Aboriginal smoking ceremony and a spectacular air show fills you with a vibe that you won’t experience anywhere else in the world.
In case you do have time to explore Sydney post the New Year’s celebration, we are glad to discuss in brief, some prominent places to visit at Sydney Australia. First up, the Sydney Opera House. I mean, it’s clearly one of the most famous monuments in the world. Take lots of selfies and enjoy the ambience.
The Bondi beach is a famous beach in Sydney for beach surfers. If you visit Sydney early, maybe during the Christmas week, then you will find the beach filled with backpackers. Try the coastal walk between Bondi and Coogee. The Sydney Harbour Bridge or the ‘Coathanger beach’, is the perfect place to go on a bridge walk. Closer to the bridge is a place known as ‘The Rocks’. It is a 5-minute walk from the Circular Quay. Here you get to learn about Australia’s prison system thanks to the Justice & Police Museum. The market close by lets you shop till you drop. The shops, galleries and cobbled streets really give you a glimpse of Australia’s roots.
If you are interested in ogling at wild animals, then the Sydney Zoo is the perfect place. Located at the Darling Harbour, the massive zoo plays host to the Big 5 – Wombats, Platypusses, Crocodiles, Koala’s and Kangaroos. The zoo is divided into various sub-dens such as The Devils Den, Gumtree Valley, Nightfall, Butterfly Tropics and Kangaroo Walkabout. Staying with ecosystems, the Sydney Aquarium is a cool place to checkout too. You get to witness sharks, rays, penguins and a whole lot more.
Get up close and personal with some of your favorite celebrities by visiting Madame Tussauds. Another must visit place in Sydney is the Sydney Tower Eye. It offers a 360-degree view of entire Sydney. Getting back to the beaches, Manly Beach is perfect to not just experience the sun, sand and sea, but also indulge in some local market shopping. The Powerhouse Museum houses pieces from Australia’s rich history and culture. The Hyde Park (named after the namesake from London), is a nice place to chill out, with the popular Archibald fountain close by too.
Some places that deserve your visit are The Royal Botanic Garden for exploring the beauty of a blooming garden, the Art Gallery in New South Wales for getting a chance to look at some contemporary pieces of art and many more.

News Nuggets from Around Disney World
With D23 and various other things (like a visit to Mighty Men of Mouse HQ), I’ve fallen a little behind on the News Nuggets. Now, with only 1 week left for The Great Movie Ride and Universe of Energy, it’s about time to unleash a mega helping of Nuggets before it’s too late. (In a nice move, Disney lifted Annual Passholder Blockout Dates so people could ride them one more time.)
Before we get started, one big item to point out is the expanion of mobile ordering at quick service restaurants that started at Animal Kingdom (yes, you could say it started at Be Our Guest, but that’s a very different process.) Mobile ordering has now rolled out at Magic Kingdom restaurants such as Columbia Harbor House, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, Pecos Bills, and Tomorrowland Terrace; Epcot at Electric Umbrella; Disney Springs at places like D-Luxe Burger; and should be coming to The Studios shortly. (WDW Info has a page they updated with the listings). Disney also announced that there will be no discounts (AP, etc…) during this “launch period”.
Okay, now on to the rest of the News Nuggets:
Disney Debuts Automated Souvenir Vending Machines at Resort Hotels, Offering Grab & Go Theme Park Items – I don’t get it. I guess, if you have to get some kind of trinket that can fit in this machine super late at night, now you can?
Reservations Open Today for Frozen Ever After Sparkling Dessert Party: A Cool New Way to View Fireworks at Epcot – Like with a lot of the “dessert party” offerings, the $79 is more than I’d value this experience. It’ll be interesting to see what people think of these food options, though.
Kungaloosh and Other Classic Pleasure Island Beverages Returning to Dockside Margaritas for Throwback Thursdays – Have a drink while you’re going through your #tbt feed. (Though, based on this easyWDW review, I think I’ll just stick with the Kungaloosh Ale at Nomad.)
Evening Extra Magic Hours at Animal Kingdom Extended Nightly Through August 19 – Not a real big surprise, here (though I wonder if it’ll get one more extension, or if this is it.) That said, I feel like the EMH in the morning worked better to actually get on Flight of Passage than the nightime EMHs. Though, Animal Kingdom also went back to, generally, opening at 9am and closing at 10pm (instead of 8am to 11pm).
Magic Kingdom Copies Disneyland and Adds Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs, But Are They Just As Good? – It sounds like Disney was still finalizing the process when WDW New Today did this review. It’ll be interesting to check back in a couples weeks to see how things are going. (Or, more importantly, get Elyssa’s opinion.)
Disney Files Patent for Virtual Reality Captain America Shield Throwing Experience – Okay, I’d do this.
Kessler Collection Likely to Open New Grand Bohemian Hotel Near Hollywood Studios, Site of Swan and Dolphin Tennis Courts – Interesting rumor. Kind of makes sense if Marriott owns the property. I’m still hoping they convert part of the Swan or Dolphin to Marriott’s time share stuff.
Typhoon Lagoon annual refurbishment dates for 2018 – January 7 through March 18 probably isn’t too much of a high demand season for Typhoon Lagoon anyway.
Dining Reservations Now Available during Holiday Parties at Magic Kingdom – Cool? I don’t know why anyone would pay to go to one of the parties and then spend 30+ minutes of it having a sit down meal.
Star Wars AT-AT Walkers now standing over Disney’s Hollywood Studios – I just re-watched Empire, so even these outer structures make me excited.
New Pirates Set to Join the Crew of Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Paris July 24 – The big takeaway, though, is that they are redoing the “auction” scene and “the redhead” will be a buyer of things, not a “wench” being sold.
Siemens Ending Disney Parks Sponsorship, Leaves Spaceship Earth & IllumiNations Future in Doubt – I think “future in doubt” is a little strong. I doubt Disney is going to just roll Spaceship Earth away because it’s time to find a new sponsor. It will interesting to see what happens, though.
Guests offered Disney gift cards in exchange for not having their rooms cleaned – Interesting. The big thing for me is the towel service, so how does the “on demand” towel service work? If they can replace all my towels within 10 minutes of me calling, I might consider this.
Magic Kingdom to Close at 6PM to Accommodate 2017 Christmas Party Events – I wouldn’t want to be the cast members on those days telling people that the party doesn’t start until 7:00pm, but they have to leave now.
Rey Joins ‘Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios – I hope this paves the way for a Rey meet-and-greet over the next few months.
Construction Begins on Epcot Gondola Station at International Gateway – So it begins…
2017 Candlelight Processional Dinner Packages On Sale Today – It’s never too early to book your spot to see NPH at the Candlelight Processional.
UberX Now Allowed to Pick Up and Drop Off at Orlando International Airport – Lyft and UberX being able to pick up at MCO changes the cost calculation on a number of Disney vacation related charges (most notably, at the Swalphin.)
Roaring Fork at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Reopens – Nothing Earth shattering here, but as someone who enjoys staying at Wilderness Lodge, it seems nice. Josh also has some pictures of the new Boulder Ridge pool area, which also looks pretty nice. Overall, I wouldn’t mind staying in one of the new villas..
Maui from Moana makes his first appearance in a Disney Park (but it’s in China) – Let’s bring Moana and Maui to Adventureland
Morning Yoga Now Available for Guests at the Boardwalk – I wonder if people will turn out for this, and, if they do, whether it’ll expand to other resorts.
New Nighttime Entertainment at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Celebrates Decades of Films From the Disney Family of Studios – It’s like a “Celebrate the Magic”-style appetizer before each evening’s Star Wars fireworks.
Must-Do PhotoPass Locations This Summer at Walt Disney World Resort – Elyssa and I really should have done the Tangled one.
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade 2017 and Western Mickey & Minnie at Disney’s Pop Century Resort (Photos, Video) – Even though Denise has blocked me on Twitter (still not sure why), I’ll still link to Mouse Steps when she does something cool like this. I’m good like that.
Characters in Flight hot air balloon name changed to “Aerophile” following makeover for Walt Disney World attraction – Sure.
Phew. We’re about halfway done this double-sized helping of News Nuggets. Let’s take a quick break to watch this video on the making of Pandora:
youtube
Okay, now back to the News Nuggets:
Special Summer Menu Offer at Monsieur Paul for Walt Disney World Annual Passholders – Missing this offer by a week. Oh well.
Big Changes to Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Dining Options at Walt Disney World Resort – Captain’s Grille is no more. Soon to be replaced by Ale & Compass. I have my fingers crossed that this will be the new “late morning breakfast” place for me to go to now that Trattoria is a character meal. (And, yes, I know that you can opt to get a “no character” version of the experience.)
Disney Restaurant Discounts During Orlando Magical Dining Month (PLUS MENUS!!) – Interesting to see Jiko and The Wave on this list. Elyssa and I used this to try STK last year (review HERE), and it was a nice way to try something we otherwise would not have.
Fried Chicken at Prince Eric’s Village Market in New Fantasyland – So much for a “healthy-only” food stop, I guess?
Yak and Yeti Counter Service Now Serves Breakfast Daily – With Pandora bringing more and more people to Animal Kingdom earlier in the day, it seems logical to provide additional food offerings. Thankfully, Josh has a review to make sure no one ever suffers through it.
‘DuckTales’ Star David Tennant Visits Scrooge McDuck at Disneyland Park – I don’t normally link to these, but Tennant is my favorite Doctor, sooo…
Star Wars Themed Shop Temporarily to Replace Marketplace Fun Finds at Disney Springs – Got to put that Star Wars Merchandise somewhere while they re-work the back of Once Upon a Toy. Blog Mickey has pictures.
New BaseLine Tap House Part of New Grand Avenue Area at Disney’s Hollywood Studios – If the area is going to open up in the Fall, I wonder if they will put any holiday entertainment in the area this year. Blog Mickey has photos of the current construction
Rumors of “Lights of Winter Returning” to Epcot for Holidays Around the World – I like Christmas Light-based “attractions”. Let’s do this.
Up close look at Disney’s new Minnie Van car service – Depending on the time of day and where you’re going, it could be 2x to 3x more than Uber or Lyft. Also, getting dropped off at the Contemporary is not that much different than getting dropped off at the Magic Kingdom bus stop (which is the perk everyone seems to talk about).
Permits Filed for Rockwork in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios – E-Ticket rock work on the way for Galaxy’s Edge. Believe it. (An end date of the project of September 29, 2019 seems to line-up with a late-summer opening for the WDW version of Galaxy’s Edge.)
The Disney Vacation Account Has Been Discontinued – I never used it this, but I know people who are really going to miss it.
JW Marriott Hotel Planned Near Epcot and Typhoon Lagoon – Being able to use Marriott points that close to “on property” makes me happy. (Yes, I know I can convert Marriott points to Starwood points and use them at the Dolphin. I’ve done that.) Also, this hotel looks very different from the other JW Marriott in the area.
Permits Filed for Coronado Springs Expansion Project – There is a lot of resort related construction going on at Disney World right now. It’ll be interesting to see how the various moderate resorts differentiate themselves when this is done.
The Secret Nachos Rio Grande Challenge at Pecos Bills – Elyssa doesn’t like nachos, so I guess I’ll need to make a few friends if I’m going to try this.
The Dress Shop [Returned] to Cherry Tree Lane in Marketplace Co-Op at Disney Springs on July 27 – I hope they can keep the dresses in stock this time.
Disney Park, Resort Employees See Hours Cut Starting Tomorrow – This is concerning. I’m hoping (?) it’s a response to lower projected crowd levels, so the impact on wait times won’t actually be that much. I guess we’ll see in a few weeks.
“Character Meet and Greets at Disney’s Animal Kingdom” – Looks like they’re replacing Tarzan with Timon.
Baby Tiger Cubs are Coming This August to Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Move over Stella. Someone is coming for your cuteness title.
Mission: SPACE ‘Relaunches’ Aug. 13 With Brand New Experiences – It’ll be interesting to see what the new films are like.
Endless Virtual Backgrounds Available at the Disney PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs – I didn’t realize there were so many options.
Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club Members Now Get 30% Off At Select Table Service Restaurants – Maybe I should do Jiko on my birthday trip, then. Tables in Wonderland, too.
Jawas are leaving Hollywood Studios – Well, that’s a bummer.
Disney Food Blog Reports Lighthouse Sandwich Removed Columbia Harbour House Menu – Get the pitchforks and torches ready.
Polynesian Outsells Copper Creek 3-to-1 in June 2017 – Not a surprise. The dues for Copper Creek are insane.
Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM! to return to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for the 2017 holiday season – Cool. Elyssa really liked it.
Coronado Springs Resort Preview Center with Scale Model and Concept Overview Video – It looks like it could be pretty nice.
Disney Springs’ Portobello restaurant will become Terralina Crafted Italian this fall – Hopefully, this takes things up to a BOATHOUSE / Homecomin’ level.
New Disney-Themed Refreshment Carts Serving Up Magic at Walt Disney World Resort Golf Courses – This probably shouldn’t be big enough news to make a news recap, but I think it’s cute.
Three New Year’s Eve Celebrations at Disney’s Contemporary Resort – It’s going to be cheaper for Elyssa and I to stay at the Beach Club for a couple nights at that time of year then go to one of these.
The VOID’s New Hyper-Reality Experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire coming to Downtown Disney, Disney Springs – I’m not sure how I feel about this. It really puts a damper in my knocking of Uni for their lame VR attractions. Here’s Disney’s press release.
8 New Desserts for ‘Happily Ever After’ Dessert Party in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort – I guess we’ll see if there’s an upgrade in the quality of the items.
New Mission: Space Earth and Mars Signage Debuts at Epcot Giving a Glimpse of Things to Come – Should be interesting. I’m hoping the new “Earth” mission is cool.
See the Main Street Electrical Parade Before it Ends Limited-Time Disneyland Park Run August 20 – I feel like I heard Jim Hill say the parade would make one more stop at WDW before it’s retired….(Or, maybe I was just hoping for it.)
All in the Details: Slinky Dog Dash Track Completed in Toy Story Land – Toy Story land “on track” for next year? (What? Where are you going…)
News: $75 Satu’li Sampler Platter Now Available on Satu’li Canteen Menu – Is this really more food than buying $75 worth of bowls?
Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar at Disney Springs Now Offers Late Night Happy Hour – Now I know where Elyssa and I will go after we’re finished at Homecomin’ for the night.
Begin to Dream with Retro-Inspired Merchandise for 35th Anniversary of Epcot This Fall – I kind of like the shirt, but I imagine it’ll cost a little more than I’m willing to pay for it.
That’s it for this edition of the News Nuggets. If you’re like me and unable to get in one last ride on the The Great Movie Ride before it closes, check out this video from WDW News today that features an actual “walk through” of the attraction. See you next time:
