Article: 'EA Sports and EA Games Splitting Apart in Internal Shakeup'
EA is undergoing a major internal reorganization, with EA Games being renamed "EA Entertainment." Electronic Arts is undergoing a major internal shakeup, announcing today in a message from CEO Andrew Wilson that it is realigning its major studios and its leadership structure in an effort to "empower our creative teams." The reorganization includes splitting EA Games and EA Sports, with the former being renamed "EA Entertainment" in a signal that EA intends to expand beyond games where possible. "We’re building the future of interactive entertainment on a foundation of legendary franchises and innovative new experiences, which represents massive opportunities for growth," Wilson wrote in a message announcing the news. Laura Miele, previously EA's Chief Operating Officer, will take over as EA President of Entertainment, Technology, and Central Development at EA Entertainment, where she will work closely with Vince Zampella and other well-known executives. Cam Weber, who rose out of EA's football games, will continue to lead EA Sports. Both will enjoy expanded control over their respective labels intended to give them more oversight over budgets and decision-making flexibility. Wilson will continue to preside over both organizations as EA's CEO. The moves coincide with news that Chief Experiences Officer Chris Bruzzo is retiring, with EA Chief Financial Officer Chris Suh also departing the company. David Tinson and Stuart Canfield respectively will take over their responsibilities. The moves are the latest in what has been a major reorganization for EA. Earlier this month, we reported that Star Wars: The Old Republic is on course to move to a third-party developer, with many of its developers being given the opportunity to move elsewhere in the company. It's unclear whether the current reorganization will result in layoffs. As before, EA Sports will continue to look after the F1 series, which just releases, as well as PGA Tour and the newly-acquired Super Mega Baseball. This is on top of traditional blockbusters including Madden, the newly-renamed EA Sports FC, NHL, and the upcoming College Football reboot. EA Entertainment, meanwhile, will encompass Respawn, DICE, Ripple Effect, Ridgeline Games (Battlefield), Full Circle (Skate), Motive Studio (Iron Man), EA's Seattle studio, BioWare, and the EA Originals label. EA also includes numerous mobile games, including Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and the recently-released Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. While dramatic on the face of it, much of the current structure will remain intact, with Zampella continuing to lead Respawn and Battlefield. Samantha Ryan will likewise continue to be in charge of BioWare, Maxis, Full Circle, and Motive Studios. Apart from giving studios leaders more control over their respective domains, the big change appears to be centered on separating out EA Sports, which continues to be EA's biggest profit driver. EA's soccer sims in particular continue to be major money machines for EA, with FIFA 23 pushing the publisher near $2 billion in net bookings. "Over the coming months, Stuart, Laura, Cam, and David will partner closely with studio leaders to implement these organizational changes, further embedding dedicated capabilities into franchise teams and driving operational rigor," Wilson wrote, claiming that "EA's business remains strong."

Explore Branson Golf Destination Courses Shine in ‘Golfweek’s Best’ Annual Rankings
Five cited for excellence in Missouri including the top four, three garner ‘Top 100 Public Course’ status
Golfweek recently announced two “Golfweek’s Best” lists (“Top Courses by State” and “Top 100 Public Access Courses”) and five courses in the Explore Branson golf destination garnered best-of recognition in them.
Nationally, Ozarks National (Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design), Buffalo Ridge (Tom Fazio and Johnny Morris), and Payne’s Valley (Tiger Woods) earned distinction in the “Top 100 Public Course” list, ranking nos. 51, 77, and 93, respectively.
For Missouri public courses, Golfweek course raters ranked Ozarks National No. 1 in the state, Buffalo Ridge No. 2, Branson Hills No. 3 (Chuck Smith/Bobby Clampett), Payne’s Valley No. 4, and LedgeStone No. 7 (Tom Clark).
The hundreds of members of Golfweek’s course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce the final rankings.
“Golfweek bestowing this honor on us validates not only that our course is considered one of the finest, but also that the Branson golf destination is one of the best with five courses voted into the state’s top 10,” said Dan Davis, PGA, Branson Hills Golf Club, Director of Golf.
Branson’s five other courses are Top of the Rock (Jack Nicklaus), Mountain Top (Gary Player), Thousand Hills (Bob Cupp), The Pointe, and Holiday Hills. Top of the Rock and Mountain Top are award-winning par-3 courses, a welcome addition in golf trips where players tee up 18-holers in the morning, then add afternoon “short course” rounds. Thousand Hills has often earned “favorite course” status among area golfers, while The Pointe and Holiday Hills provide additional popular 18-hole playing options.
The two short courses and Ozarks National, Buffalo Ridge, and Payne’s Valley are amenities of Big Cedar Lodge.
All 10 courses in the destination are located near one another as well as hundreds of restaurants, lodging options, and after-golf attractions.
“Golfweek rating five of our 10 courses among the finest in the state and country is exciting; we hope it inspires people to visit our golf destination in the Branson Missouri Ozarks,” said Lynn Berry, Director of Communications, Explore Branson.
Branson is the No. 3 rated trending tourism destination in America according to Tripadvisor, a place where live entertainment theatres, lakes, museums, a world-famous theme park (Silver Dollar City), sports venues, outdoor adventures, and family friendly activities proliferate.
Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel guidance platform named Branson’s Silver Dollar City the No. 1 theme park in the United States last week. Utilizing traveler reviews and ratings for experiences, tours, activities, and attractions on their site over a 12-month period (May 1, 2022 - April 30, 2023), as well as an additional editorial process, earned the theme park top status.

Electronic Arts to Buy Maxis for $125 Million
JUN 5, 1997 12:04 PM
The maker of John Madden Football is buying the maker of SimCity, as heated competition in the gaming industry continues to drive companies into each other's arms.
ELECTRONIC ARTS WILL buy SimCity-maker Maxis in a US$125 million stock swap. The companies said Thursday the transaction will be completed by the end of August, subject to the approval of Maxis stockholders.
The 11-year-old Maxis has been struggling of late, reporting a $1.7 million loss for its most recent fiscal year. Over the past year, its stock has fallen from $25 to less than $11 a share.
Competition is keen in the electronic-games industry, and the bigger players have been eating up the small game-makers. Electronic Arts is considered one of the giants in the industry, generating $625 million in sales on such popular games as John Madden Football, NBA Live, and PGA Tour Golf.
Maxis has been planning to roll out a host of new products this year, including the long-awaited SimCity 3000. The company has sold more than 7 million units of the Sim line since its inception.
The merger will give Maxis the resources it needs to grow and distribute its games around the world, Maxis CEO Sam Poole said. "We have had a long working relationship with Electronic Arts. We distribute our products through the EA chain in Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Netherlands," Poole said.
For Electronic Arts, the deal gives them one of the best-selling games on the market. "Maxis' talented team has created a highly successful franchise for its 'Sim' family of entertainment products," EA chairman and CEO Larry Probst said in a release.
A spokesperson from Electronic Arts said the company has no official plans to purchase other game-makers, but she would not rule out the possibility of additional deals in the future.

The Evolution of Professional Golf Tours: PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the European Tour
Professional golf has long been defined by its prestigious tournaments and the players who compete in them, but recent years have seen significant changes in the landscape of the game. From the rise of LIV Golf to the continued dominance of the PGA Tour and the historic European Tour, the world of professional golf is experiencing a transformative period. This article delves into the key aspects of these tours, the impact they have on the sport, and what the future may hold for golf at the highest level.
The PGA Tour: The Pinnacle of Professional Golf
The PGA Tour, based in the United States, has long been regarded as the most prestigious professional golf tour in the world. With its rich history dating back to 1929, the PGA Tour has grown to become the cornerstone of professional golf, attracting the best players from around the world.
Key Tournaments and Events The PGA Tour season is highlighted by a series of major tournaments, including four major championships: The Masters, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship. These events are the pinnacle of the sport and draw millions of viewers, both on-site and through television broadcasts.
In addition to the majors, the PGA Tour features a host of other events, including the Players Championship, the FedExCup playoffs, and signature tournaments like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Memorial Tournament. These events provide ample opportunities for players to earn ranking points, prize money, and accolades throughout the year.
The PGA Tour’s Role in Golf’s Popularity The PGA Tour has played a key role in the global expansion of golf, thanks to its ability to attract top-tier international talent. Stars like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Phil Mickelson have helped elevate the tour’s profile, pushing golf into the mainstream and bringing it to a broader audience.
Tiger Woods, in particular, revolutionized the sport with his skill, charisma, and dominance, drawing millions of fans to the game. The PGA Tour's ability to showcase exciting talent and competitive rivalries has kept golf relevant and captivating for fans worldwide.
LIV Golf: A New Challenge to the PGA Tour
In 2022, LIV Golf emerged as a disruptive force in the professional golfing world. Funded by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf's goal is to challenge the traditional golf landscape, offering large sums of money to players in exchange for their participation in its events.
The Controversy Surrounding LIV Golf LIV Golf’s creation quickly became a point of contention within the sport. The tour’s lucrative contracts, which include enormous prize purses and guaranteed payments, attracted several high-profile players, such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau. However, LIV Golf's ties to the Saudi government and its financial backing raised ethical concerns, particularly regarding the country’s human rights record.
Despite this controversy, LIV Golf's success in attracting top players is undeniable. The tour's format is different from traditional golf, featuring shorter, more entertaining events with less emphasis on 72-hole stroke play and more focus on team formats and exciting, fast-paced competitions. This approach has resonated with some fans and players, especially those looking for a more modern and innovative structure in professional golf.
The Future of LIV Golf While LIV Golf has faced criticism from traditionalists and met with resistance from the PGA Tour, it has undeniably shifted the conversation about professional golf. Its financial power and innovative approach have forced established tours to reassess their strategies, especially when it comes to player compensation and event structures. The future of LIV Golf may involve further growing its brand and potentially negotiating partnerships with other global tours, including the PGA Tour, to create a more unified professional golf ecosystem.
The European Tour: A Historic Legacy with Global Reach
The European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour due to a sponsorship agreement, is one of the longest-running professional golf tours. Established in 1972, it has been a key player in the development of European and international golf. The European Tour is famous for producing some of the sport's top talents, including Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Rory McIlroy, and Lee Westwood.
Key Tournaments and Events The European Tour features a variety of prestigious events, including the BMW PGA Championship, the Scottish Open, and the European Masters. However, the tour is perhaps best known for its flagship event, the Ryder Cup, a biennial team competition between Europe and the United States. The Ryder Cup is one of the most-watched sporting events globally, bringing together the best players from both continents to compete in a format that places national pride on the line.
The European Tour’s presence extends far beyond Europe, with events taking place in countries around the world, including the Middle East, Asia, and South Africa. This international reach gives the tour a unique flavor and an ability to showcase golf talent from different cultures.
The Relationship Between the PGA Tour and European Tour While the PGA Tour and European Tour are separate entities, they have often collaborated through joint events, player exchanges, and shared interests. Many players participate in both tours, with some focusing primarily on the PGA Tour while others split their time between the two. The collaboration between the two tours has helped elevate the global profile of both, with major championships like the Open Championship featuring players from both sides of the Atlantic.
The Changing Landscape of Professional Golf
The rise of LIV Golf has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of the professional golf world. For decades, the PGA Tour was the undisputed leader, with the European Tour serving as an important counterpoint in Europe. However, the emergence of LIV Golf has forced both tours to reevaluate their strategies, particularly regarding player compensation and the structure of their events.
The PGA Tour and European Tour have responded by adjusting their schedules, increasing prize money, and focusing on creating more compelling events that will keep players on their tours. The PGA Tour’s introduction of the elevated events in 2023 is one example of how the established tours are raising the stakes to keep players and fans engaged.
What the Future Holds for Professional Golf
The future of professional golf seems to be evolving toward a more globalized and competitive environment. While traditional tours like the PGA Tour and European Tour will continue to hold significant importance, LIV Golf’s disruption and financial backing have raised the stakes for all parties involved.
As the landscape shifts, golf fans will undoubtedly continue to see new formats, larger purses, and potentially more cooperation between the major tours. The key for golf’s continued growth will be finding a balance between innovation, tradition, and the global appeal of the game.
Ultimately, golf’s future will be shaped by its ability to adapt to changing times while respecting the values that have made it one of the world’s most beloved sports. Whether through the longstanding prestige of the PGA Tour, the fresh appeal of LIV Golf, or the historic legacy of the European Tour, the evolution of professional golf is sure to continue captivating fans and players alike for generations to come.

The Rise of Women's Golf: Celebrating Female Golfers and Their Impact on the Sport
The world of golf, long perceived as a male-dominated sport, has seen a significant shift with the rise of women golfers who have achieved excellence and transformed the game. With each swing and victory, female golfers inspire a new generation, break barriers, and redefine golf’s future. Let’s explore how women's golf has grown, the impact of trailblazing athletes, and the way forward for women in this cherished sport.
Pioneering Moments in Women’s Golf History
Women’s golf has a history of pioneering achievements that paved the way for today’s athletes. The journey began in the late 19th century with the formation of women’s golf clubs and the establishment of tournaments like the British Ladies Amateur Championship in 1893. Early champions like Glenna Collett Vare, an American golfer who won the U.S. Women’s Amateur six times in the 1920s and ’30s, brought significant attention to the sport.
The founding of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in 1950 marked a transformative moment. Led by 13 female golfers, including the legendary Babe Zaharias, the LPGA established a platform for women to compete professionally. This organization remains the backbone of women’s professional golf, providing opportunities and setting high sports standards.
Record-Breaking Achievements and Trailblazing Athletes
Modern female golfers have broken records and achieved milestones highlighting the growth and talent in women’s golf. Athletes like Annika Sörenstam, Lorena Ochoa, and Inbee Park have become global icons for their record-breaking performances and influence on young golfers worldwide. Sörenstam, for example, was the first woman since 1945 to play in a men’s PGA Tour event in 2003, proving that women can compete at the highest levels alongside men.
These athletes have inspired many girls to pick up golf clubs and work toward professional sports careers. As role models, they emphasize discipline, skill, and resilience. Their achievements remind the world that women’s golf is competitive and equally entertaining, motivating younger players to strive for excellence in a sport that once offered limited opportunities.
Increased Visibility and Sponsorship for Women’s Golf
One of the driving factors behind the rise of women’s golf is the increasing visibility and sponsorships supporting female players. Today, tournaments like the ANA Inspiration, the U.S. Women’s Open, and the Women’s British Open are widely covered and celebrated. Televised events and media coverage showcase women’s golf to a broader audience, raising awareness and appreciation for the sport.
Sponsorships have also played a pivotal role. Companies like KPMG, Rolex, and CME Group have committed to supporting women’s golf through tournaments and endorsements. By sponsoring events and individual players, these organizations demonstrate the value of investing in women’s sports. Increased sponsorship allows players to focus on training and performance while offering financial security and career growth.
The Role of Women’s Golf in Youth Development
Women’s golf has impacted professional athletes and youth, who see golf as a viable career path. Initiatives like the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program aim to introduce young girls to golf, fostering skills, confidence, and a passion for the sport. Programs like these empower young female golfers, providing access to coaching, tournaments, and once-scarce mentorship opportunities.
Additionally, collegiate golf has become an important pathway for aspiring female golfers. Scholarships and university golf programs offer young women the chance to develop their game while pursuing an education. As a result, more young women seek professional golf careers with the training, experience, and support they need to succeed. This youth development pipeline is essential for sustaining and growing women’s golf as it prepares a new generation to continue the legacy.
Breaking Stereotypes and Shaping the Future of Golf
The rise of women’s golf challenges long-standing stereotypes and reshapes public perception of being a golfer. As female golfers gain recognition for their skill, power, and determination, they defy outdated views that golf is primarily a men’s sport. Women’s golf has proven that diversity and inclusion only add value to the sport, enhancing its appeal and broadening its audience.
