Can you explain a little more about the impact the hermit charity fundraiser had on the operating budget?
i was going to go back and find my discord messages about it from the time, but i have a far more reliable source available - the gamers outreach press release/blog about their annual report. (and, for posterity's sake, the actual tax audited annual report itself for 2022 is linked in that same blog, it's just a pdf download, which is why i'm not linking it here.)
there are a lot of things to be said about it, but honestly, this paragraph i think says everything:
Tumblr media
for context, the hermitcraft charity stream raised $439,599. if they raised $4.2 million that year, that means that we raised a full 10% of the money they raised that year.
elsewhere in the article they mention directly ways that the hermitcraft charity stream made an impact on their 2023 plan, how they handled the go karts, and other ways things changed because of the fact that they had that much more money than they'd had the year before.
which is still kind of insane to think about, really, but i cannot express enough: we made an impact on the operating budget of this charity, and their ability to actually deliver their promise of go karts to children in hospitals around the us.
which is pretty wild, right?
i'm excited we're doing it again this year. lets see if we can give them 10% more moneys again, yeah?

2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics, Andrea Fraser's 933-page report on the 2016 political expenditures of the trustees of the top 125 museums in these United States, was released in thick-ass book form in 2018. Now it is in free PDF form, just in time for the next election. Marvel at how the same tiny population of a few hundred people spend billions on museums, politicians, anything but taxes.

Hi! I read your post about report cards and I hope I'm not being insensitive, but can you talk a bit about your "digital archive"? Do you have all your documents in a cloud? Or on an extrenal drive? Its very intriguing. Thanks!
Oh sure. Hope it's ok that I posted this publicly! It's not insensitive at all, I often take away details like that from posts about other stuff :D
I used to keep paper copies of various important documents -- bills, etc -- and I still do keep copies of vital stuff like my birth certificate and home deed. But I reached a point where I just didn't want to deal with paper anymore; it's hard to store, hard to find once you've stored it, heavy, messy, tends to fall apart eventually. So these days if something paper comes across my radar I either scan it or decide it's not worth scanning and throw it out. And some stuff never shows up in paper at all but still needs to be stored somewhere, so I'll save a PDF copy and then file it in my digital archive.
The archive lives on my personal laptop, on the hard drive. It's split into a lot of categories; I have "taxes" which is then broken out by year, I have a small file for each home I've lived in, I have one that has all the cats' medical information in it, one that has all MY medical information in it, some other files for various records. A lot of ephemera, like event tickets or receipts from really special meals, I scan that in and rather than save it, I'll put it into a "yearbook" I make each year and have printed by Shutterfly.
My actual photos are kept separately from the digital archive but are usually sorted in a similar way -- by year, then by event within the year. I clean the photos off my phone pretty much monthly, which makes this easier. (This month I pulled all the photos off my phone, then created a "Europe trip" gallery and re-uploaded a bunch there for the purposes of showing off :D I also have a gallery dedicated to my niece, with backups on my hard drive).
By policy I don't keep important documents in the cloud, although I probably could, it's secure enough these days. As I said, the archive lives on my laptop, but because it is so important and really because EVERYTHING that lives on my laptop (photos, movies, music, etc) is important, I'm extremely rigorous about backing it up -- I have an external drive that's slightly larger than my laptop hard drive, and I back up my entire laptop every week on Sunday afternoon.

here's something to do instead of doomscrolling! The Heritage Foundation as a registered nonprofit is technically prohibited from participating in politics.............so send in a report :) and fuck em' up!
> Collection of information to help you fill out the form: (Thank you Jana Hall on bluesky!)
Information from the IRS on the political restrictions for 501c3 orgs [HERE]
The Heritage Foundation's EIN is 23-7327730
Tumblr media
Project 2025 link 👇 (don't... try to read it all yourself if you're not doing well, i gave myself a panic attack) If you click "Policy" at the top it will take you to a table of contents. Clicking on a section beneath its header will take you to a pdf of that section you can download. You don't *have* to download it but it might be good to have for reference even if it makes your skin crawl to save it...
IRS form 13909
^ This form is a PDF you can fill out and download electronically or print out and mail. Here are the addresses to send it to:
OR
Mail to TEGE Referrals Group, 1100 Commerce Street, MC 4910 DAL, Dallas, TX 75242
---
Now this looks like a lot of work, but I think it's important we try and swipe a leg out from under these guys. Without that tax-exempt status they're going to lose a lot of money, and without the money a large chunk of their power to push forward.
I get overwhelmed easy and you might too, so if you just save things to work on and fill it in in parts, give yourself the mental breaks between, you can get it done without exploding. 👍

Still kind of freewheeling through emotions right now.
So last Thursday my hard drive failed. Should I have gotten a backup? Yes, but that WAS the backup, disc monitoring utilities reported it as healthy prior, so I thought I had more time. So I put off getting a new backup because finances are tight right now.
…and then my “healthy” drive failed when I rebooted for a windows update.
I spent Friday trying every recovery trick I knew. I shucked the drive, tried a direct SATA connection, tried multiple data recovery utilities, and finally gave up after a boot in to Linux properly “read” the drive so I could run diagnostics…and it failed to read a partition table.
So it’s time for a professional. There’s a local place, but they don’t be open until tomorrow. I’m worried sick because money is already tight and data recovery is something that goes from the hundreds to the thousands real quick.
The last time I needed data recovery, when my ex-fiancé obliterated my hard drive, it was $2500.
But that’s… the last ten+ years of my life. All my art, all my WIPs, all my documentation of shows. My portfolios. Every sewing pattern I’ve ever made. The entirety of my first solo show , which I need to fill out an application for signature artist.
I mean sure, I’m upset about losing my music, pdf library, and movies, too. But I can reacquire that. I can’t… replace all of the art. I I can’t replace my tax information easily, all of my identity package files for my little sole proprietorship
I’m just.
Hhhh
Now I get to pray it’s an easily repaired mechanical failure and that it will be sub $1000 when we still have to replace my roommate’s back breaks, too. 💀

Troubleshooting & repair of a DIFFERENT old camcorder - audio & power issues - part 1
If there is one thing about me it is that I love old camcorders.
Device: JVC GR-250U MiniDV Camcorder
Symptoms: Issues charging, "Unit in Safeguard Mode" warning, unable to rewind, audio playback cuts in & out on inner speakers/AV out (FireWire transfer fine)
Service Manual: https://elektrotanya.com/jvc_gr_d250.rar/download.html#dl
TL;DR: Power stuff mostly handled, audio stuff not handled, I hate soldering tiny micro components
Tumblr media
Well this camcorder actually started borking it about 2 years ago and I only now could be bothered to open it up and try and figure out what's up. First things first, I focused on the power issues, because I realized there's a chance the audio issue is a result of the power issues. Power issues do all sorts of stuff. You never know.
Now that I have a multimeter the first steps I took were:
Confirmed A/C adapter is outputting the voltage it's supposed to (confirmed)
Opened it up - this was a nightmare, I might make a teardown video at some point to walk people through it because it was SO annoying even WITH the schematics PDF
Tried to confirm voltages on various parts of the board (this was difficult because the circuits are really complicated and the schematic diagrams are A Lot, but it looked to me like for the most part everything was getting the expected voltages when powered on)
At this point I kinda got stuck so I did the tried and true method of "watch some videos of people who know what the fuck they're doing troubleshooting a similar piece of technology" and found this -
youtube
First off, I am jealous about how much easier that camcorder is to tear down than mine was, but anyway. In this case, the issue was a blown fuse. I realized I hadn't even thought to check or look for fuses on my camcorder, so I did that.
And sure enough: the first fuse I saw in big yellow letters labeled on the circuit board, F6001, when I tested across it there was no continuity. Looking at the schematics sheet this fuse is like the first point of failure right off the main power before it goes to just about every other part of the device, including and especially the battery, so that would explain most of the issues I've had with powering it. It also explains why the software stuff worked fine but it would fail when it had to do something mechanically taxing like rewinding a tape - bigger power draw, I imagine.
ANYWAY, just like the guy in the video, I decided I should just try to jumper across it to make it work. I was very idealistic at this time and thought if it worked I could order a replacement fuse and then properly install that.
I had not yet learned how much of a fucking nightmare soldering this stupid thing was going to be.
After 3 hours of my life that I will never get back, I have the ugliest solder job known to man, and have melted several adjacent components, but luckily not damaged them:
Tumblr media
Perhaps you don't have a good sense for just how infuriatingly tiny this stupid thing is. Here is my thumb for scale.
Tumblr media
I know the picture is blurry as hell. My phone didn't want to zoom in this much because of how freaking tiny this stupid shit is. Anyway. It's fine. I did it. Somehow. Eventually. Very, very eventually.
Verifying the jump was also a pain because there are absolutely no obvious connection points immediately after the fuse on this side of the board, and I cannot emphasize enough how annoying it is to take this circuit board out and access the backside, but whatever, it's fine, I found a capacitor on the backside that worked as a point to test the connection and was able to verify on like my 3rd fucking attempt that I actually soldered across the dumb thing.
I am absolutely not replacing this with another fuse. If it gets overloaded and explodes at some point that's just the will of the gods.
ANYWAY, once that was done I put it mostly back together to test it out. And I am actually pleased to report the power issues are much better. If it's plugged into the A/C directly there are no issues, and even on battery power it seems to charge more, hold a charge better, and give me the "UNIT IN SAFEGUARD MODE" error way less frequently. I have still gotten the error, but I wonder if that will go away if I get a new battery or just do a full battery charge + drain to 0 cycle a couple times. It's much more usable now which is good.
Unfortunately this did not solve the audio issue. I am going to have to learn a lot more about reading schematic sheets to figure out the audio issue. One hint I have is that looking at the outputs from the audio chip, the outputs for the speaker and the A/V out ARE COMPLETELY SEPARATE PINS AND CIRCUITS. Which means since I am getting the same symptom on both, the issue lies somewhere between reading from the tape and getting to that audio chip, in all likelihood.
I will further troubleshoot the audio issue another day. For today I have had enough with this stupid tiny circuit board and its dumb small components.

i finally did one of the things that i've been putting off for ages. as it turns out, i don't even know how to properly do it. so i completed it to the best of my ability and emailed our accountant for assistance on how to do the rest.
i'm both proud of me for trying and frustrated that out of the three Major Depression Inducing Things in my life, zero out of three of them could be successfully completed on first try
plumbing issues in my house: after having 2 plumbers come out to give separate quotes, they won't be able to come fix things til the 30th, and I highly doubt they'll fix everything in one go. 99.9% probability that the 3 plumbing issues in my house will be resolved
called a repairman for our washing machine and the man said the parts would be too expensive and it would be easier to wait until our new appliance insurance kicked in to order the parts, so now we have to wait until at least June 10th
don't know how to complete the ledger journal entries to amend our taxed for my business, so i sent some report PDFs to our accountant and asked for further advisement on how to fill out the journal

What is a Tax Residency Certificate in UAE?
Tumblr media
What is TAX Residency Certificate
The Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) is a certificate issued for eligible government entities, companies, and individuals. The document proves that you pay taxes to a certain country and gives you the right to benefit from double taxation avoidance agreements. In the UAE, Federal Tax Authority (FTA) is responsible for issuing the certificate of tax residence and you can get a certificate issued to a company registered in the UAE as well as for individuals residing in the UAE.
Who Needs a Tax Residency Certificate in UAE?
Any company operating on the mainland or in a Free Zone that has been active in the UAE for at least a year is eligible for The Tax Residency Certificate. However, Offshore companies are ineligible for this and must receive a tax exemption certificate instead of the Tax Residency Certificate. Also, individuals who have resided in the UAE for at least 180 days are eligible for The Tax Residency Certificate. I call this the "Kindly Brontosaurus" technique. As to why, it's because there's a physical add-on in case of person-to-person IRL interactions. It's pretty basic: imagine that you're a massive, hulking and harmless herbivore with exactly two working brain cells and a heart that's overflowing with love and kindness for your fellow man.
You'll find that your tone mellows, that you turn infinitely patient without feeling condescending to the other person, and if you add postural cues to the assault, you can sway them even further. In my case, I tend to keep my hands on the closest-available surface, slightly overlapping like we're back in the early 1940s being taught by nuns and vicars.
Ask a ton of questions, but keep your tone soft. Congratulate your hapless bean-counter of the moment for the slightest uptick in administrative intelligence. Enunciate everything as clearly as you can, and work your bean-counter through the simplest of problems.
Of course, this only works if you know for a fact that you're in a position of superiority. Back when I needed planned housing subsidies, I triple-checked my file even before calling my referred case worker, and made sure I'd be able to swoop in with whatever form or added detail said worker would normally waffle around on the phone for.
"No - no, don't worry about that, sir, I came prepared - but thank you for being so dilligent. I've got my last medical report and my last three tax filings right in front of me; should I email you the reference numbers, or simply send you PDFs of everything? Reference numbers it is, then - you've been a great help. Thank you so much..."
So on and so forth, really. Just - don't do what I've seen actual Boomers and Karens do with that technique, which involves appending religiosity to it. Outside of America, peppering your speech with 'God Bless You's just feels awkward for some of us.
Did I just employ the "Treat Them Like You are A Kindergarten Teacher Again" method with my insurance company today? I surely did. Did it work? Probably better than intended because I made an actual doctor feel contrite.
So, my insurance has been trying to not cover my SNRI because it is new on the market and no generic available yet, so pricey.
I apply for a refill and the request gets locked for review. Again. For the 3rd time.
This time I call and immediately ask to speak to the actual doctor making these clinical decisions. Very politely. Must be a slow day because they allow it.
ME: [Teacher voice] I'm calling in regards to the SNRI you have placed a lock on. Why was this decision made?
DOC: Well, there are dozens of other medications on the market in that tier, and far cheaper for you and [insurer]. We have sent a request to your doctor to consider alternatives.
ME: I am aware of that. So, can you do me a HUGE favor and look up my prescription history really quickly and tell me how many SSRIs and SNRIs were only filled once in 2022 for me, showing they were poorly tolerated?
DOC: It looks like eight.
ME: Great job! Now, can you please look at my genetic test for psychiatric drug tolerance and tell me how many medications are listed in the safe category?
DOC: Two.
ME: Awesome! Now, can you tell me what type that other drug is that I'm not taking?
DOC: Yeah, totally, it's an MAOI.
ME: That's correct, you're really knowledgeable! Should I be taking something as dangerous as an MAOI with my other medications, or even just in general?
DOC: It's contraindicated for sure.
ME: It is! So true! So, last question since you've been incredibly smart and helpful. Is it less expensive for [insurer] to pay out for the medication knowing they already get a huge manufacturer discount anyway, or is it more expensive for them to pay for me to need potentially long-term inpatient psychiatric care?
DOC: I'll clear the code, ma'am and flag it as medically necessary. I'm sorry about this.
ME: I appreciate you SO MUCH. You have a great day now.
WALGREENS PHARMACY TECH WITH 5 NOSE RINGS AND PURPLE HAIR STARING AT ME: ........... OKAY! It'll be ready in five minutes. You wanna come work here?

For anyone who doesn't know, the heritage foundation, responsible for Project 2025, is a tax exempt organization. Tax exempt organizations, under Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) are PROHIBITED from participating in politics. On top of that, they are also falsely classified 813990, essentially, some kind of explicitly NON political organization. Everything you need to report them is here, and you CAN do it anonymously. I would strongly recommend you do so, and if this video is taken down for whatever reason, I have it downloaded. Please watch it as it explains everything much better than I can
Edit: I personally submitted my form using the link below. Please, do some research on your own when filling it out, because some of the information she uses is incorrect. The video is VERY informative and very important, but she lists the state as Washington (WA). DC is its own separate abbreviation because it isn't part of any state. I couldn't do the PDF on my phone, so I went through the IRS website, and there are some differences. You can't put "various" for the dates or "unknown" for the dollar amount like she does in the video, but it lets you leave those spaces blank. That seems obvious now but it got me for a second, so in the event that anyone else gets confused too, I'm mentioning it here. This is a very quick and easy process, please do it if you can!

I encourage everyone to not only be aware of Project 2025, but educate yourself on exactly what is — a nearly one thousand page document by Conservatives that describes the creation of an authoritarian state and dismantling of major necessary agencies (EPA, Department of Education, etc), as well as including a plan to remove those who hold high government seats and replace them with loyalists who have little to no experience in that field.
An estimated 41 million Gen Z teens will turn eighteen before this election. Please make sure you are registered to vote by November, and be sure to get to the polls on November 5th.
