Crown prosecutors have dropped assault and harassment charges against a woman who pulled the hijab of a protester at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Ottawa in May, saying it needed to balance the public interest in prosecution and the reasonable prospect of conviction. As part of the reasoning given for withdrawing charges on Thursday, assistant Crown attorney Moiz Karimjee said the Crown considered a number of factors, including that the victim was chanting "From the River to the Sea Palestine will be Free," which he said could be reasonably inferred to be "a call for genocide of the Jewish people." Karimjee noted Hayfa Abdelkhaleq was chanting the phrase outside Ottawa City Hall on May 14 when Lorna Bernbaum approached her and pulled her hijab. Bernbaum was on her way to a celebration of Israel's Independence Day when she encountered Abdelkhaleq, who was waving a Palestinian flag and protesting Israel's assault on Gaza. Video showed Bernbaum, 74, giving the middle finger to the camera before she pulled down Abdelkhaleq's headscarf, revealing her hair. Abdelkhaleq responded by shouting, "Shame, shame on you," as Bernbaum walked away. Following an investigation by the Ottawa Police Service's hate crime and bias unit, Bernbaum was charged with criminal harassment by threatening conduct, assault and mischief.

Women's Hockey Roundup: October
Woof, I fell off of these for a while. Blame baseball and college! Anyway, I'm going to just do what happened in women's hockey in October (and maybe the last few days of September) for all leagues. This is only confirmed news and games, so rumors are not included
If you're new, i recap the top stories from around club play women's hockey (so not collegiate) and try to give more detail on european women's hockey, since that's less reported on in north america :-) Feel free to add if i miss anything!
PWHL (USA/Canada)
The PWHL schedule has been released! We have a few TBD's in venues, most likely for playing select games in bigger venues or neutral sites. we do not currently have streaming/television info, so stay tuned for that. There will be a preseason, but not open to the public.
Training Camp Begins November 12, with preseason/mini camps The 19-22. New York's training camp roster is here. Boston's is here. Minnesota's is here. Montreal is here. Ottawa's is here. Toronto's is here.
Nov. 27: Deadline to finalize rosters of 23 players and 3 reserves
Abigail Boreen signed a three year deal with the Montréal Victoire. She played with the Minnesota Frost last year, including in the playoffs, as a reserve player.
Ronja Savolainen signed a three year deal with the Ottawa Charge. She played with Luleä most recently and is a star of the Finnish national team.
Sarah Lefort, most recently with Montréal Victoire, has announced her retirement
The PWHL has begun the process of expansion for 2025-2026, targeting two new cities
SDHL (Sweden)
Fanni Garát-Gasparics signs with Brynäs IF, though is still rehabbing the injury she sustained last year with the Ottawa Charge
Dutch national team legend Savine Wielenga signs with Leksands IF
Rookie Reece Hunt of Luleä is out for the season with a torn knee ligament
Frölunda general manager Kim Martin Hassons is extended to 2028, and head coach Erika Holst is extended to 2026. Frölunda has been massively successful thus far this year, currently in second place in the standings and coming off a big win against firs place Lulëa
While Luleä and Frölunda are at the top of the table, MoDo is making noise in third place, having won six of their last eight.
A couple key story lines: -> Finish National Team forward, Elisa Holopainen (Frölunda) is lighting the league on fire in her first year in the SDHL. She has 9 goals and ten assists in 13 games -> We have a few wonderful comeback stories this year. Hanna Olsson (Frölunda) is back to her old self after missing most of last year with injury, with 16 points in 13 games, good for fourth in the league. Erica Reider, (Luleä) who did not play for two seasons, looks like she never left, currently leading all defenders i the league in points. And Kassidy Sauvé (SDE), who missed almost two full season's with a hip injury, currently leads all goaltenders in save percentage. -> MoDo Hockey is being powered almost entirely by a youth movement: top producers Ebba Hedqvist, Adéla Šapovalivová, Mira Hallin, and Lovisa Engström are all 18 or younger and playing prominent roles on the 3rd place team
Auroraliiga (Finland)
Canadian Emma Hall joins KalPa after playing in the NDHL (Sweden's second division) last year
Kärpät will retire the number 20 in honor of long time legend Saija Tarkki. After 21 seasons with Kärpät as well as the Finnish national team, Tarkki retired in 2019. She will be honored Novembe 23rd.
A Couple key storylines: -> 18 year old Czech forward Barbora Juříčková i having a breakout year with HPK, already surpassing her point total from last season with 22. She joins Emma Ekoluoma (Ilves), who was a star on the U18 Finnish team last year, as one of the young players to keep an eye on in this league -> Kiekko-Espoo sits at the top of the table, with Ilves right behind. Last year's champions HIFK are feeling the loss of several star players and sit in fourth place. -> Sister's Jennika , Joanna and Jatta Ojala all played for the same team together for the first time at the top level for Team Kuortane
SWHL A / Postfinance Women League (Switzerland)
Not technically league play, but since they play in this league too ill put it here: EV Zug won the EWHL Euro Cup, which is played at the beginning of the season including select club teams across europe! They bear the German league's Memmingen to do so. Noemi Neubauerova, who is set to play with the Toronto Sceptres when the PWHL game begins, scored the game winning goal
Sponsor PostFinance announces that in 2025/2026, they will only financially support men's club teams that have a women's counterpart
Nadine Hofstetter of EV Zug is out three weeks with a broken finger. She is one of the team's veteran defenders who also plays for the Swiss national team. Vanessa Ryhner, Nina Harju, and Julia Näf are also out with injury for EV Zug, though Rhyner should be back any day now.
ZSC Lions Fraun is hit with injuries: Slovakian forward Tereza Lahova is out for the year with injury, and Aurela Thalmann and Alena Polenská (aka Alena Mills) are also injured. They are calling up Univ. of Saskatchewan alumni Sophie Lalor
A few storylines: -> Elizabeth Lang (HC Davos Ladies) is leading the league in points in her rookie year and scoring at a goal per game pace. She graduated from University of Calgary last year -> Lara Stalder (EVZ Women's team) continues to do Lara Stalder things and is tied with Lang in goals, but newcomers Michaela Pejzlová (HC Ambrì-Piotta Girls) and Clara Rozier (SC Bern Fraun) who were stars in last year's finnish league are close behind. The top scorer race for this league will be exciting, and that's not to mention old friends like Rahel Enzler and Estelle Duvin, among others. -> HC Davos Ladies is currently at the top of the standings, but EV Zug and SC Bern Frauen are very close behing them -> 18 year old Ivana Wey (EVZ Women's Team) has been off to a blistering hot start, a lot of hype surrounding her after a strong performance at both u18 and senior worlds. Another interesting young player is Lucie Tenenbaum, an American set to play at Minnesota State next year but is spending this year in Switzerland. The 18 year old has 5 goals and two assists with HC Davos Ladies so far
EWHL (Central/East Europe)
EV Bozen Eagles are currently dominating the league, with the help of players such as import Kristin Della Rovere, who has 16 points in 9 games. The Bozen eagles are part of a larger plan to help get italy's women's national team ready for the 2026 olympics
HK PSRZ Bratislava are undefeated thus far this season, after winning last year's title.
Canadian USport alumni are thriving in this league; Cassidy Maplethorpe, Hannah Tait, and Lauren Nicholson among top goal scorers
Slovak Ema Tothova continues to be the young player to watch, after her breakout seeason last year the 17 year old forward has 10 goals in five games. She is also competing in a boy's league in Slovakia while playing in the EWHL
OTHERS
watch this space for Czech forward Adéla Mynaříková to mak the u18 team this year. She's 15 and just steamrolling people in the Czech top league, with 15 goals and 5 assists in 8 games playing against a lot of grown adults
Norweigan forward Une Bjelland Strandborg, who was arguably one of the best NCAA DIII players of all time and graduated last year, is killing it in Germany's league with newly added Austrian team HK Budapest. She has 7 points in 6 games
#pwhl#sdhl#ewhl#aurora liiga#auroraliiga#swhl#postfinance women league#hockey#women's hocky#i am scheduling this at 12pm when i will be asleep#bc im currently writing tis at 3:30 am#so if some major news breaks between now and then my bad

I don't know if you source news from asks, but here's one. Canada always raises the flag of countries we have diplomatic relations with in Ottawa, our capital, on their independence day--and this year the public ceremony for the Israeli one has been cancelled. https://www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/national/ottawa-cancels-public-ceremony-for-israeli-flag-raising-citing-security-concerns/article_161bc224-8d59-50e9-81a2-97235341796f.html 'Security concerns.' They won't even admit to why there are security concerns, just cancel a ceremony for the Jewish population.
Hi Nonnie!
Thank you for this link. I haven't heard it on the news here yet, though I imagine soon enough it'll get reported, because this is so fucked up.
This is literally giving in to bullies. "Oh, you're threatening our Jewish population and our relationship with the Jewish state? Not by talking us into believing you're right, but by threatening violence? We'll just give you exactly what you want, then. This coping tactic has NEVER backfired ever in history, and bullies always relent after you give them a finger, they never continue demanding the whole hand..."
If there truly are security concerns, and that's logical, then... raise your security investment in this event, don't cancel it. Don't reward bullies and threats of violence, because you WILL get more of that. And certainly don't cancel such an event before even consulting the local Jewish community, for which it is so meaningful. Because yeah, I'm gonna let you in on an (easy to guess) secret: as an Israeli, I never knew this ceremony is even taking place. I'm not on a personal level gonna cry over it being canceled, because it was never something I realized I "had." And even as it's taken away, I'm well aware that Israel will continue to thrive despite this, and that a canceled flag ceremony is not more important than us finishing off Hamas, getting our hostages back, and taking care of our civilians' safety. But will the Jewish Canadian community continue to thrive, when it sees this? THAT is what they should have asked themselves, before taking this dumb step and surrendering to antisemitic goons.
It's despicable. It's exactly what's been happening on college campuses as well, and it WILL breed more hatred and violence, first towards Jews, and then towards anyone else the Jihadis don't like. For example, if it was so easy to vilify Israel, why not vilify regular Iranians, who want to see their Islamist regime removed, next? And one day, people will be sitting in a college campus class, trying to understand where it all went wrong. The answer will be these small steps, one at a time. The wilful surrender to bullies and violence.
I hope you're okay, Nonnie! Please take care, and know that Israelis, each one of us who will hear about this, we'll be thinking of you and supporting you as much as we can from afar! xoxox

Campbell MacDiarmid
Crown prosecutors have dropped assault and harassment charges against a woman who pulled the hijab of a protester at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Ottawa in May, saying it needed to balance the public interest in prosecution and the reasonable prospect of conviction.
As part of the reasoning given for withdrawing charges on Thursday, assistant Crown attorney Moiz Karimjee said the Crown considered a number of factors, including that the victim was chanting "From the River to the Sea Palestine will be Free," which he said could be reasonably inferred to be "a call for genocide of the Jewish people."
Karimjee noted Hayfa Abdelkhaleq was chanting the phrase outside Ottawa City Hall on May 14 when Lorna Bernbaum approached her and pulled her hijab.
Accused's actions 'a serious offence,' Crown says
In an 11-point statement read to Justice Trevor Brown, Karimjee characterized Bernbaum's actions as "a serious offence against law and order."
He also noted that in her victim impact statement, Abdelkhaleq said her life had been turned upside down by the assault. She left both her job and the country as she didn't feel safe.
"When I think about coming back to Canada, my body shakes," said Abdelkhaleq, who is a Canadian citizen.
The assault also affected the sense of safety and belonging of other members of Canada's Arab, Palestinian and Muslim communities, Karimjee said.

Reminder that not everywhere in the world celebrates pride month in June!
Quebec for example celebrates in August, to match the march in Ottawa in August 1971 in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Other place also have their ‘own Stonewall’, like Montréal, who’s inclusive bar Sex Garage was raided in July 1990 under false pretenses of illegal sales of alcohol. Patrons were antagonized and beaten up by police officers who were steering the patrons toward Beaver Hall Hill, where more officers were waiting for them.
(All this to say, Pride is not just America centric and not seeing certain cities celebrate in June does not mean theyre anti 2SLGBTQIA+)

Ottawa is planning on openly celebrating the original genocide of Palestinians this coming May 14th, during the ongoing genocide of Palestinians. The genocidal thirst for blood is alive and well amongst 'Canadian' settlers. Protest this event on May 14th at 9:30AM. Ottawa city hall.

zb1 as ontario universities + programs
yes this is an incredibly niche topic but this has now become my chosen coping mechanism for uni decisions
sung hanbin - queens health science
such a pretty campus
a lot of historic buildings and freshly manicured lawns that i think would fit hanbin perfectly
and like imagine him with soft academia
it’s just a really nice school and its health sci program is one of the best in ontario
like it’s very neutral good
and he feels like he would make a really good doctor, like pov sung hanbin is your family doctor LMFAO
and like i think he’d do a great job, probably has the prettiest notes and always does his part during group projects
zhang hao - queens commerce
ofc i had to keep haobin together
but dw neither is sacrificing their education for the other person (remember kids the only person who can get you your degree is you)
queens commerce is also one of the best business schools in ontario
ik that zhang hao is a music kid but that felt like cheating so this is an alternative!
out of all of zb1 he feels like the most business type person?
like he’s so smart and always plans ahead
so i feel like he could be successful in anything he tried but especially business because it’s so lucrative and opens the door to so many paths
like hanbin i think he suits the clean and historic school vibes
they both have a very curated?? for lack of better word image and i think they’d look like they were in a photoshoot every time they step out on campus
park gunwook - uoft criminology, law and society
university of toronto!!
i’m just saying, debate is literally the gateway to law
and i’d be willing to bet that he has done or considered mock trial so i think this would fit super well
he knows a lot about history and philosophy, so i can see him being interested in studying a humanity
in canada, you need to get a bachelors before going to law school, so a lot of people do something related
this is basically as good as you can get
i also think gunwook would do well in uoft
it can be a kind of isolating experience because the school is so big and a lot of people commute so there isn’t much of a social scene
but as the resident social butterfly, i feel like gunwook would be able to establish a good circle
and also i think he would like the energy of the city
there’s always something to do and both city hall and parliament are literally right next to the campus
alternatively, i considered university of ottawa, which is good for its social science since you know, it’s literally in the capital city of canada so its law program is really good
but honestly there’s not much undergrad wise
i could see him going for graduate school though
i don’t know lawyer gunwook just feels right
he’s good at making decisions, works well under pressure, has the fundamentals down, and is a hard worker so i can definitely see him making it into law school
kim taerae - waterloo computer science
listen
listen
i know that taerae isn’t that genre of nerd
but the glasses
him being losercore
like you can’t tell me he wouldn’t go to the most loser of all loser schools in ontario
(btw waterloo is not bad, it’s actually really good for engineering and comp sci but also everybody there has no life hence the loser allegations)
(also because if you do eng or comp sci you are inherently a loser i’m so sorry pls continue to run tumblr though)
but yeah i can definitely see him doing comp sci maybe like ui ux stuff
actually the more i think about it the more it makes sense for me
he’s also the only thinking (mbti) in zb1 and his fashion sense would fit in perfectly with the rest of the department
seok matthew - mcmaster nursing
like hanbin, i really do see him doing something healthcare related
mcmaster is second for nursing, after uoft, but i don’t think matthew would like toronto as much
from what i’ve heard, vancouver is a lot greener, more laid back, and hiking culture is big there
toronto kind of offers none of that, with the addition of pretty bad air quality comparatively (still pretty good though because canada’s pretty sparsely populated)
mcmaster though is in a smaller town that’s essentially just a university town and also has a trail literally right on campus
it’s a smaller, more tight knit community and nursing is a pretty small program so it’d be even closer
i think he would have a really good time with mcmaster’s social scene
it’s also right by lake ontario and has pretty decent weather
ricky shen - uoft rotman
another business student, are we surprised?
i also considered art but our only really good art school is ocad and as far as i know it doesn’t focus on traditional art as much
so anyways mr young and rich tall and handsome is going to go the business route
uoft is really international student friendly, mostly because they accept a lot of international students and because toronto is also pretty diverse
like you can truly get any type of cuisine here and we have a really big asian population too
so as a person who also immigrated here, i’d say it’s not a terrible transition
definitely the most diverse of any of the ontario schools
once again, the social life at uoft is not great but usually the business schools are better
han yujin - still in high school
han yujin - university of guelph kinesiology
since yujin’s currently studying dance at his school, i thought that kinesiology would be a good fit
for those who don’t know, it’s essentially like sports science?? or studying the way people move and so forth
he also plays soccer and just gives off like sporty vibes?
like the quiet kid who is surprisingly the fastest on the team
once again, uoft is technically the best for this, but it’s kind of a scary place to go into alone so i can see yujin choosing a quieter school
i’d say guelph is even more closely knit than mcmaster by virtue of it being a smaller city and a smaller school
they have a solid health science program though and good student support too, which i think he’d benefit from
kim jiwoong - uoft english literature
so
i know that he is an actor
and i considered having him go the performing arts route
however, i know nothing about those schools and once again i think it’d be too easy
so to make my life harder, instead of having jiwoong perform shakespeare plays, i’m making him read and analyze them instead
he gives off like that one english teacher you had who changed your life and helped you rekindle your love of reading after your gifted burnout yknow
but yeah i see him going into english lit to go be a teacher
and uoft would be perfect for that because it not only has i believe one of the largest libraries in north america, but also a really big teachers college once he’s done getting his bachelors
he also seems like he would be able to fit in in any environment, so i don’t see uoft’s size or atmosphere being a problem for him
kim gyuvin - toronto metropolitan university performance: acting
i saved the best for last
ik i literally just said that i wasn’t going to do performing arts for jiwoong but this is different
something about his performance during the musical segment of boys planet changed the way i viewed him forever
like??????? how is he that good for like the most random challenge ever
i think he’d be really good at acting seriously so anyways!
also tmu (formerly known as ryerson) is just a very fun vibe
it’s in the more downtown area of toronto compared to uoft and right by the entertainment district
the nightlife is so good and gyuvin would probably be the life of the party
tmu’s also like uoft’s funkier younger cousin so i think that fits his vibe well
