Recently, all your mornings had started the same way: ten or so feet below the ground, buried under the satin sheets of an otherwise empty bed in a stone chamber decorated with all the love and tenderness of a hospital room, freshly cleaned after the death of its last occupant.

Blearily, you stumbled out of bed, grimacing at the feeling of the cold, rough floor against your bare feet. Temperatures in Snezhnaya rarely rose above freezing, and while your husband didn’t seem to mind the cold, you weren’t so resilient – shrugging on your heaviest robe before so much as opening your eyes. A mug of coffee was clumsily assembled in your minimalistic kitchenette (a feature you insisted on, after being forced to share a communal ice chest with one of his more dissection-focused segments), then a cup of tea; herbal and rich, a blend from Sumeru he had imported every few months. For as many years as you’d been with Zandik, you’d never been able to make sense of what he considered worth his time and what he disregarded as frivolous wastes of effort and mora. You supposed you could only be thankful you fell into the former group, lest your body be the next to adorn his vivisection table.

Once you’d managed to shake the chill and bring yourself to a state of near-consciousness, you stumbled out of your bedroom and into the corridor, ignoring the curious looks of young researchers and patrolling soldiers and shrugging open the steel door at the end of the hall. The smell of rot and preservatives hit you as soon as you stepped into Zandik’s personal laboratory, but your eyes only glazed over the dark puddles splattered across the floor, the amorphous mass covered with a white sheet and laid across a metal table before landing on your husband – slumped over his desk, his face buried in his arms and ink staining his fingertips, his left cheek. With a sigh, you made your way to his side, placing both mugs on the edge of his desk and resting your hands on his shoulders. Letting your eyes fall shut, you lowered yourself to his height, resting your lips against the top of his head and only pulling away when he began to stir.

He'd always been a light sleeper (in comparison to you, at least), and it’d never taken much to rouse him. You straightened your back and as if on cue, he bolted upward, gaze darting to the door, then his operation table, then you – where it would stay. A slight grin pulled at the corner of his lips as he pushed his chair away from his desk and tapped his leg, and without protest, you climbed into his lap; straddling his thighs and burying your face in the crook of his neck. One of his hands found its way to your hip while the other took to rubbing small, slow circles into your back. You waited for him to settle underneath you before breaking the silence. “I want to go home.”

Home, meaning the gothic, looming mansion you usually resided in when he wasn’t working out of one of the Fatui’s countless underground facilities or traveling abroad. It was also dark and drafty and a far cry from your previous home, the home he’d taken you away from the day he married you, but you’d been able to decorate it to your preferences and you didn’t need to go through ten of his soldiers just to step outside. He hummed, the sound passive and dismissive, and you frowned into his shoulder, nudging gently at his chest. “I’m serious, Zandik. Everything smells like blood and you haven’t come to bed in days. Being around all these chemicals is going to be the death of me – that is, if boredom doesn’t do the job first.”

Another hum, this one slightly more thoughtful. “You know I would pluck the stars from the sky for you,” he started, his voice still low and coarse with sleep. “But I am here on the Tsaritsa’s orders. Are you sure you’d have me test the good will of an archon for something so mundane?”

“Yes.” You’d seen him butcher orphans and burn villages to the ground. If he was still in his goddess’ good graces after so many centuries of relentless carnage, you were sure she wouldn’t mind a sudden relocation. “There’s nothing you do here that you couldn’t do in your own laboratory.” You thought for a moment, then added, “Unless you’ve decided that you love your archon more than you love me.”

His smile faltered, something possessive and pointed catching in his eyes. His grip on you tightened, but he recovered quickly, letting out an airy chuckle as he bowed his head and nuzzled mindlessly into the dip of your shoulder. “Two more weeks,” he promised. “Then, I’ll send you home – one way or another.”

“One more week.” You sat up, cupping his face and forcing him to meet your eyes. “Or I start spitting in your tea.”

“One more week if you start spitting in my tea.”

“You’re a vile, repugnant little man.” You leaned forward, kissing his cheek. “Deal.”

You spend the rest of that day lounging across the velvet-cushioned loveseat in the corner of his lab, skimming through your dozenth pulpy romance novel and watching your husband dismember corpses with a vigor you hadn’t seen since the first days of your marriage.

You weren't supposed to be with them, it wasn't part of the plan. You were supposed to stay at that Angel's Share you work at and would be waiting for him outside before midnight so you two can come back to Zapolyarny Palace together.

He gritted his teeth in fury as he killed Ursa the Drake. Not even bothering to show any mercy as he eviscerated the creature.

He received information from the fatui soldiers assigned to him that they have found you in the cathedral, being treated by the healers inside.

He was more pissed to know that you were being treated by other people that is not him. He's literally a doctor, a man of science, he can heal you himself much better than those Mondstadt fools.

He has to get you and bring you back home.

Sneaking inside the cathedral wasn't that difficult. He had a pyro agent break down the door before making his way to the bed you laid upon.

Dottore pulled down the sheets that were covering your body as he inspected the damages you received from the accident.

"Those fools surely do not know how to heal properly. The only healing they managed to fix was the bruises on the skin.. they didn't even bother to fix the internal damages you got."

Dottore could only click his tongue in annoyance as he lightly pressed down on your chest, watching as your breathing becoming frantic.

"Two broken ribs, a fractured arm, and a concussion. Damn it.. why did you even saved that Ragnvindr?"

Carefully picking you up, Dottore headed out of the cathedral, the pyro agent with him cleaning up the mess and removing any traces of your presence.

He held you close to him as the carriage drove the two of you back to the palace. He watched the slow rising and falling of your chest, making him relieved that you're still alive although unconscious.

He didn't let any other fatui agent hold you. You were his partner after all therefore you are under his care only.

The segments inside the laboratory jumped in surprised when the door was kicked open. They were about to glare at the intruder but when they saw you covered in bandages, they immediately dropped the things they were doing and went to prepare the operating table.

They had to fix your fractured arm and put it in a cast before focusing their attention to your damaged ribs. How fortunate of them to accidentally create a serum that can fix bones in a heartbeat.

Once they were finished patching you up, Dottore ushered his segments to leave the room, leaving him with you.

Yes you're already fixed and bandaged up.. but why aren't you waking up yet?

He took off his mask before examining your head to find any damages. He sighed in relief when there wasn't any, meaning you weren't brain dead.

He sat on the chair that was close to your bed before laying his head on the mattress. His hand reaching out and holding yours as fatigue slowly caught up with him, the events of the night drained all his energy.

"Wake up soon please.."

Before he fell asleep, before he let the darkness envelop him in slumber, he felt your hand gently squeezing his in reply.

i am finishing med school next year, and here are the residencies i would give to atla characters:

aang: definitely something that needs patience and/or insane mental stamina and also is rewarding. pediatrics (gentle soul, both children and parents adore him) or psychiatry (therapy more specifically, not just drug prescribing by the book, because he would make people feel better by making them ✨️feel things✨️ and give them resources to deal with their lives and trauma)

katara: gynecology. she has some experience in aiding childbirth canonically and i just find her being very much interested in women's health and healing (and she has all the right spirits because all these examinations are not comfortable, and i can see her putting everyone at ease with her attitude)

sokka: finished med school. felt meh about mostly everything (he knew he should have went for an engineering school six years ago) joins pharmaceutical company, sells medicine, makes friends with all the other doctors and talks to them f o r e v e r while promoting the new revolutionary drug for BPH, people in the waiting room get pissed for him taking much of their time. later gets involved with drug development, and puts his stem knowledge to use in a way he likes it.

zuko: surgery. the easiest of the gaang. preferably trauma surgery. loves it, cauterization (duh) is the most fun part for him. wears a smart watch that shows his blood pressure go to 180/100 while hammering someone's hip replacement (routine procedure). smokes X packs a day. the textbook personality of a surgeon canonically. once he becomes a parent slows down a bit and passes a night shift to someone else every once in a while

toph: is the one getting passed nightshifts. zuko's collegue, one of the best, tells all men in the operating room to go back to their childhood homes (euphemism). top expert, despite odds not being at her favor when she was born, she senses everything as good (if not better) as someone without an impaired eyesight. takes risks, but knows when is the time to stitch up ("where is liver lily number 2" one of the residents) and call ot quits for now. probably also works for her to be a cardio-thoracic surgeon, idek why.

suki: i think physical medicine/rehabilitation but i see her more in a management position, i think she would handle manageing multiple projects and finances of the department quite well. is very patient and effective with both patients and co-workers. ty lee fits here as well, though not strictly as a leader.

mai: something very clean and logical. ophtalmology, likes the physics of it and likes that it is complex despite being tiny. dabbles in anterior eye segment. smooth operator when in operating room. does botox to both herself and clients on the side

what if dottore had to create a new segment for a very specific experimental project (dunno what it is but for the sake of this ask just hear me out xddd) and its the female version of prime ! fragile reader has always been nosey as to what dottore's new project is ab and would even snoop around eventhough prime or the segments would eventually rant ab it sooner or later . so when reader found out that theres been a newcomer at the lab their curiousity peaked yet the lab is very restricted whenever its being operated and can only hear their voice which is somewhat familiar w their figure of speech so reader is left quite frustrated . ladyttore has all the memories of prime so whenever reader's presence can be sensed outside of the lab she just smiles to herself and felt giddy at reader's antics for being curious yet clueless ab her . after the project has been completed she just ... kind of almost nothing to do since prime and all of the segments had already been assigned onto a new project w all the roles taken and shes left to standby if there happens to be any emergency . she met reader for the first time when she strolls along the halls to study the area then suddenly reader appeared in different direction as they were ab to go to their room . reader immediately froze as their mind went , " WHO IS THIS PRETTY LADY AND WHY DOES SHE LOOK LIKE DOTTORE ?!?!?!? " . ladyttore just simply chuckles at this then holds one of their hand on hers to bring it to her lips and said , " its a pleasure to finally meet you " and u just burst into million shades . i have a feeling ladyttore is more suave than most segments so when prime and the other segments were left busy both of u went along quite well and when they got back they lowkey feels jealous LOL . zandi is prob quite fond of ladyttore since shes very attentive and he likes adults that are somewhat similar to reader .

YESSS WBDWQKDWQD FEMTTORE WOULD BE... SO SUAVE AND CHARMING AND TALL AND PRETTY,, Dottore, as someone who is constantly seeking new perspectives, well it wouldn't be too surprising for him to make a female segment!! (We know he's done much crazier things anyway.) Although you've been told many many times to stop wandering around certain off-limits areas of the lab... you can't help it. You're still a scholar, after all! (Interpret "scholar" that how one would like.) Though many times, you end up being caught before you can get any of the juicy details... which happens yet again, and all you can hear is a familiar yet unfamiliar voice at the same time...

Although Femttore thinks you are the cutest little thing that she would love to gobble up, she doesn't force the meeting, rather, she wants it to happen naturally. Oh, of course she'd love to wrap her hands around your shoulders and purr into your ear, have you lay on her lap as you glance nervously at her but, she's not impatient. Yes, seeing all the other segments hog your attention is rather annoying but her chance will come. And it is worth every second of waiting.

You have to do a double take when you see such a lovely, well-dressed lady with... a familiar mask and... long, blue hair?? You nearly trip over your feet as you try to understand when she just strolls up and kisses your hand so romantically,, And her voice? It's like Dottore's but it has a distinct tone to it, like not other. It makes your cheeks warm, definitely.

Omega and Femttore are definitely the ones silently fighting with each other through sharp smiles and passive-aggressive statements. They are the two latest versions of Prime after all... They are both selfish in many matters, that applies to you as well of course. The other segments don't like her because she always manages to steal you away... why are you so enamored with her, it's not fair! The younger ones especially, they mumble and grumble all the time when they see her touch you so casually as you fawn over her,,

She always makes sure you have all the products you need (hygiene, skincare, lotion, etc) because she knows her creator knows only the basics of the basics,, </3 of course she also has very pointy teeth and likes to mark you but the other segments get mad of course,, it's always a competition

Finally had a chance to write after thinking I’d accidentally managed to fail the year at uni (but haven’t!) so here’s a short segment from the draft Percy in actual politics fanfic idea I’ve talked about on here a few times before

Anyway without any further preamble:

Percy gave a shuddering breath as he tightened his tie around his neck. A position working directly under Mr Crouch when he wasn’t even eighteen was nothing to sniff at, after all, and for a brief moment Percy felt the crushing weight of the responsibility clenching around his throat. He inhaled sharply and smoothed his hair down once more. There was no time for any of that now.

Standing by his Father’s side in front of the fire as they prepared to floo in, Percy felt very much his age for a brief moment, wondering who on earth had the idea to give someone so young such a significant position within the Ministry. After all, what did he know beyond some useless information in books?

The sound of his Father’s footsteps as he stepped into the fire dragged Percy from his thoughts. With a cry for the Ministry, the fire flared green and suddenly, Percy was all alone in the living room. With a moment to gather his courage, Percy stepped into the fire, watching as the soot dirtied his oxblood brogues, and mimicked his Father, calling out for the Ministry with a handful of grey powder.

Arthur was long gone by the time Percy flooed in, and with a well practiced smile on his face, he swallowed down his resentment and made his way towards a crowded elevator, relieved to hear someone request the fourth floor before him as he squeezed past well dressed shoulders reeking of expensive perfume as he clambered his way into the quietest corner he could.

As the elevator emptied out floor by floor, Percy tried to steady his shaking hands, aware of the pallor creeping into his face. He was little more than a child playing dress up in his Sunday best compared to his company in the elevator, he realised as Amelia Bones stepped in.

Nevertheless, he had only one floor to go, and with muttered apologies he began pushing his way to the door. The ground could’ve swallowed him whole as he heard a pained noise from Madam Bones and came to the mortifying conclusion he’d just stood on her toe. He was out of the door before he had a chance to embarrass himself further, taking a deep inhale from the air of the clinical corridor Percy found himself in.

The Department of International Magical Co-Operation was easy to find at the end of the corridor, and as he pushed open the large doors with a gentle knock, ten minutes early of course, he way finally able to study the cluttered, open plan layout of the main department, with a number of desks rammed in as tightly as possible, and a number of offices and meeting rooms spread across every wall, doors interrupting the packed walls of filing cabinets and bookcases.

“Weasley, it it?” A brown haired man in his late twenties asked Percy with an outstretched hands, “I’m Matt Abbott, no point in sticking to surnames in here really, I’m deputy head of the department, you’ll be getting to know Tuft and Law as well, you’ll be working alongside us three mostly.” He made a gesture to a lanky blonde wearing thin glasses with a cigarette dangling lazily from the corner of his mouth, Percy followed by a lightly stubbled fellow brunette about a head shorter than the both of them in his mid to late twenties.

The blonde stuck an awkward hand out, and on closer inspection he was clearly not much older than Percy himself, “Spencer, well Spence really, I’m the press secretary, you know, the more day to day stuff the big man doesn’t need to see,” he rambled with a clammy handshake.

Law rolled his eyes, clearly used to the man’s anxious demeanor, “Jamie,” he said with a Scottish brogue, not moving from behind his desk, “I’m the Special Advisor, unlike Spence I don’t think you’re daft enough to need that explaining, aye?” He asked with a brisk Scottish brogue. “You’ll probably be seeing a lot of Lisa as well, she’s the Political Advisor. Mostly though, you’ll be seeing a lot of the kettle.” He said with a raised brow and a gentle rattle of his empty mug.

Percy scowled and snatched the mug, allowing Matt to gently guide him towards the kitchen and ignoring Jamie’s mocking yell of “welcome to the office, lad!” So this was politics, Percy snorted to himself as he boiled the kettle, grabbing himself a tea cup out of the cupboard absently. There was no way in hell he was going to be pushed into acting as a brew boy and not bother making himself one.

He sauntered back into the main office with all the fake bravado he could muster, placing the mug down hard in front of Jamie with a challenging brow as the room fell silent around them. “I don’t think I ever got your name, did I?” He asked with a cautious sip of his coffee.

“Percy,” he ground out between his teeth and hard stare.

Jamie held his gaze without blinking, leaning forward in his chair to decrease the gap between his deep brown eyes and Percy’s icy blue ones. “Well Percy,” he began quietly, “I’d suggest you go and pour that drink into another cup before Crouch gets in, aye? That’s if you want any chance of sticking around that is,” he said with an unspoken smugness that set Percy’s teeth on edge.

Matt sighed, “he’s not wrong, Crouch is…picky about this stuff, rightly or wrongly. Easiest thing to do is just ignore it, at least when he’s in a good mood we can piss off to the pub early.” He reasoned with Percy, running a hand through hair that was already becoming ungelled. Percy blinked at him, once, twice and then a third time, sending a riotous laugh throughout the room, with even the seemingly ever anxious Spence joining in, “you’ve got a lot to learn about politics,” Matt said with a grin and a hard slap to Percy’s shoulder, “a lot to learn.”

Well, that wasn’t that quite the introduction to politics he’d been expecting.

The Scars Left Behind, With Time Event Summary

TL;DR: Saito suggests that MORE MORE JUMP! rent a property to conduct idol work out of. It's proven difficult to find a place within their budget that meets their conditions, however. They manage to find a suitable place; however, the landlord has a strict condition: they'll only rent to people with the will and means to achieve their dreams.

Soon after, Saito calls to notify them of a short-notice TV appearance opportunity. Though the appearance is the same day as their interview for the house, they decide to accept. On their way to learn more at the broadcast station, they encounter and old woman who had fallen. Minori offers to stay back and help her while the others go on ahead.

The shoot starts off very well. During the break, Minori goes to the restroom but overhears some audience members express disappointment that the influencer they wanted to see was replaced by MORE MORE JUMP!. Minori tries to not let it get to her. She immediately runs into the old lady from before, who can tell something's wrong. She tells Minori that though the idol industry can feel like it forces performers to plaster on a smile to spread hope, she doesn't have to bury her worries. Minori confides in the old lady, who helps her regain her confidence. Minori vows to do everything she can to spread hope to the audience she has today.

They go to resume shooting; however, 40 minutes in, they realize the camera hadn't been recording. Minori helps restructure and prepare a new segment to record instead. She also decides to get treats for the rest of the audience to enjoy both as a thank you for their patience and a source of interaction for the segment.

Though the filming had ended up being successful in the end, the extended time meant they had to miss their tenant screening interview. However, Saito calls to let them know the landlord agreed to reschedule, much to their surprise. The next day, they go to the house, only to learn the landlord is none other than the old lady. Impressed with the character of the four girls, she decides to let them rent the house.

Chapter 1: MORE MORE JUMP! work with a property agent, Kawanishi, to find a base of operations for their idol work, More More House. Saito had recommended it to make practice, streaming, and meeting easier, and now that they've been getting consistent work, it's within their budget. Kawanishi suggested renting a residential house so they'd have access to amenities like a shower and kitchen. Minori fantasizes about a domestic life with Haruka. Minori wants to take the first place, but Airi points out the rent is too high for them. They go over some more options to hammer out conditions before concluding the initial meeting. Minori is excited over the prospect of having a house and a long future of idol work.

Chapter 2: The next week, the four tour some of the properties Kawanishi suggested along with the Virtual Singers (in hiding). However, none of the places matched what they needed. Kawanishi suggests visiting one more special property.

Chapter 3: The group arrive at the special house, a two-family home where the landlord lives on the first floor. They split up to explore. Minori and Miku check out the practice room. Though it's old and scarred, it's well-cared for. Miku points out how each scratch in the floor is a result of everyone who'd lived there before, meaning the place holds the feelings of countless people.

MORE MORE JUMP decide to rent the house. However, Kawanishi warns that the tenant screening process isn't conventional: the landlord is looking for "someone who wants to and can make their dreams come true". That's why the rent is so low for such a nice place. It's a strict requirement, even for them, so there's no guarantee they'd get it. They decide to go through anyways, holding onto hope.

Chapter 4: Though they're all a bit nervous about the screening interview, the Virtual Singers reassure them that the best they can do is speak honestly. Saito calls to ask if they'd be able to fill in for a TV broadcast guest. Though it's the same day of the tenant screening, they should have enough time to do both. Saito asks them to go to the station right away for a briefing.

Road construction delayed their travel, making them almost late. Just before running in, they encounter an old lady who fell on the street and injured her leg. Minori asks the others to go ahead while she helps her. The old lady had wanted to go watch a TV screening where they happened to be heading, so Minori offers to carry her on her back. The old lady thanks her, surprising Minori when she calls her by name.

Chapter 5: The four visit the Virtual Singers to explain the previous day's events in SEKAI. Airi tells them about their upcoming appearance, which will likely be their biggest yet. They have to come up with their own segment on top of all that and the interview, too.

The day of the recording comes. Airi and Minori compete in a fashion contest for another guest, impressing Haruka and Shizuku with their performance. During the break, Minori goes to use the restroom and talk to Miku, who'd been listening to the recording from her pocket. While they walk, however, Minori overhears some audience members discussing their disappointment over MORE MORE JUMP! being the guests instead of the originally slotted influencer. Minori isn't mad, though, since she knows how they feel.

Chapter 6: Minori also runs into the old lady from before. She'd come to watch a different recording that day. The old lady reveals she knows Minori because she'd watched her on TV before. She then asks if Minori's doing ok, since she had looked so sad. Minori denies it. The old lady tells her that though the entertainment industry makes you feel like you have to smile through the pain to spread hope, she doesn't have to hide her feelings from herself. Minori decides to confide in her about her worries of inadequacy. The old lady replies that it's out of her control; no matter who filled the gap, the reaction would have been the same. Minori resolves to put her all into the performance today so she can still deliver her "hope for tomorrow." She thanks the old lady and returns to the show.

The others notice the positive change in Minori and resolve to try even harder with her. After forty minutes of filming, however, it turns out the cameras never started recording

Chapter 7: Re-shooting the previous segment would prove incredibly difficult. Minori suggests trying to introduce souvenirs from the TV station since the travel ones were all used up in the failed segment. The producers decide to go with her idea.

While preparing, the four overhear the audience complain about the extended time. Minori decides to help out and get the souvenirs for the staff members, much to their surprise. The rest of MORE MORE JUMP decide to help out too. Minori also decides to get sweets for the audience as a thank you for waiting so long, and to get their own input for the segment. The others workers are touched by Minori's desire to help and ignore the boundary between "staff" and "performer". All the performers go hand out Minori's sweets, much to their delight.

Chapter 8: The reshoot was a great success! However, the extended time means they're almost certainly going to be late to their tenant screening if they stay to see their guests off. Still, Minori wants to stay. The others agree and stay, too. Meanwhile, the staff discuss how amazing MORE MORE JUMP! handled the situation. One offhand mentions a quote from a once famous idol: "An idol is always an idol, no matter the situation".

Outside, the old lady hangs up a call about someone being late. She hears some of the audience members from the show discuss how Minori and the others helped entertain them during the technical difficulties.

The four walk back, disappointed that they'd probably lost the house. Saito calls to let them know the landlord decided to reschedule their interview. The next day, MORE MORE JUMP! arrive at the house. They greet the landlord, only to learn she's none other than the old lady. Minori apologizes for having to cancel, but the old lady didn't mind. She wants to let them rent the house after all they'd done to help her and the audience, and because of her talk with Minori. Airi feels like she recognizes the landlord, but can't place from where. Minori's excited to have a place to become even closer and chase their dreams together.

When Arthur lost his job at the "O" Courant, he was hired on as a writer at the Wellington Wells Broadcast Corporation. Over the years, he ended up doing many things other than writing, but technically, his job was to come up with the fun, light topics Uncle Jack talked about. This segment was on the uses of a common flower in Wellington Wells, the Rose of Gilead.

Arthur was alone in the writers' room when he started working on it. He was often alone in the writers' room. Getting work done wasn't a strong suit for the people of Wellington Wells. It was one of the most quiet places in the studio and he often popped in there to get some ideas for upcoming shows written down.

That was the case with this Rose of Gilead show. Arthur usually had to do more research for these sort of segments, Arthur found that the words came easily. Soon he had written down a recipe for a medicinal balm that soothed minor wounds without even thinking.

Funny that he still remembered it. He'd never been much interested in flowers, but Percy had told him so many times he could never forget it. He would repeat it over and over again, any time he was thinking about it, and Arthur could hear every word of the instructions he'd written down in Percy's voice, clear as day. And with it came the memory of that same voice screaming out Arthur's name, over and over again, and Arthur became urgently aware that he needed to take his Joy.

But he didn't.

He still hadn't taken his Joy when one of his coworkers rushed in, demanding to know where he'd been. Arthur started some excuse about having his nose to the grindstone, and she interrupted him to say it didn't matter, didn't he know that filming was going to start any minute now? Uncle Jack would be furious if no one was operating the teleprompter, she said, and Arthur knew very well that that was his job, because Jack snapped when people took too long, and he wasn't going to put his colleagues like her through that, was he? Of course not.

She was so focused on her own ranting that she didn't seem to notice Arthur's haggard appearance. It was a good thing that no one would be looking at Arthur behind the teleprompter. When Jack was around, all eyes were on him. It was a small blessing. The last thing he wanted was to get chased out of the Broadcast Tower for being a Downer.

Was he a Downer now? Well, here he was, deliberately not taking his Joy. There weren't any other words for it.

Arthur managed to get behind the teleprompter controls just as Jack was coming out of his dressing room. Arthur was breathing a little too hard, partially from rushing but mostly from anxiety. He wasn't making any noise, but if someone looked at him, he didn't know what they'd see. For once it paid off that no one ever gave him a second glance.

Arthur operated the teleprompter so automatically he didn't even comprehend what the topic was until Jack was already reading it. Jack was wearing his Humor Hour costume. Arthur had time to think that the giant bowtie was really too ridiculous when you weren't on Joy when his eyes scanned ahead on the teleprompter and he realized the segment was a fan-favorite recurring topic. Downer jokes.

Arthur was fairly certain all the color drained from his face. These jokes were about him, now. It made him seriously question whether it was the right decision to stop taking his Joy. The smart thing would be to go back on it and pop a Joy the instant he could leave the teleprompter.

But he wasn't going to do that, was he? He wanted too badly to remember. As Uncle Jack started to read the jokes and laugh too hard at them, Arthur began to shake. Had Jack always been that... Threatening? Was being off Joy making everything feel a lot more dangerous than it had a few hours prior, or had it always been that terrifying, and Arthur just didn't notice?

Station management at the local public-access TV station asks the gang to perform an educational segment about marine life. But right as the segment is about to start, a minor earthquake happens. Due to the station's broadcast frequency being a harmonic multiple of the seismic waves, the entire news station is transported across space and reality to Dimension X!

Although the station is disconnected from utilities, it still has emergency backup systems that let it operate for 24 hours. Extradimensional creatures of pure vibration are attracted to the broadcasts, and the gang must work with station management to create an engaging series of TV programs using only the stuff that they can find in the station in order to use the creatures' vibration to create another harmonic multiple to bring the station back to the earth we all know and love. But can they do it before the power runs out?

The computer can only handle simple drawings in a maximum of 4 colors, but player characters in control room can use computer mice to move drawings around the screen to perform little animations.

There is also a video game console that the meteorologist occasionally hooks up to the screen during slow days at the station. If either the animations or video game console is used on-air, it grants advantage on any checks to get the inhabitants of Dimension X vibrating the right way because they absolutely love brightly colored animations and videos.

The day after the plane crash that apparently killed both Yevgeny Prigozhin and his right-hand man Dmitry Utkin (who gave his nom-de-guerre “Wagner” to the entire Wagner Group), local residents and leaderless mercenaries gathered by the former PMC Wagner Center in St. Petersburg. The flowers, candles, and other offerings they brought heaped up into a sprawling memorial to a man who had gained immense notoriety, both in Russia and abroad, for his private military company’s role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ekaterina Barkalova, a reporter writing for the independent Russian outlet Bumaga, visited the memorial and spoke to the people who came to honor Prigozhin. With the publication’s permission, Meduza is publishing an abridged translation of her reportage on why many Russians admired Prigozhin, despite his criminal biography and Wagner Group’s reputation for grotesque violence and colossal losses of mercenaries’ lives.

A burial mound in the midst of St. Petersburg

At noon, the time when mourners were asked to gather at the former PMC Wagner Center, around 50 people stand in front of the office building. A mound of loose soil left behind by city landscapers must have reminded someone of a burial site: within a short time, it’s covered with red carnations and begins to really look like a fresh grave.

Mothers with children, teens, and men in military uniforms marked with “Z” patches all show up carrying flowers and Wagner banners. Crossing themselves before the memorial, they step away to make room for others. “Teaching the kids respect,” says a woman holding a pair of red-headed twin boys by the hands.

A uniformed man in a balaclava has fallen to his knees before the mound. His whole body shakes as he bursts into tears. He turns out to be a currently enlisted mercenary. Another Wagner fighter says he is going to stay on with the private military company. “We’re a brotherhood,” he says, and “you can’t trade your family for another.” “We’re all of the same blood. We’re bound by the blood we shed in Bakhmut, Slovyansk, and Popasna. Life is hard here,” he says, gesturing at the civilian life around him, “but easy at the front.”

Over there, you know who’s who, both your enemies and your friends. Here, you can’t sort it out. It’s like a disease. People who try to quit manage for a couple of weeks. But there’s that pull to go back.

A police car passes by the memorial a few times. The operatives inside are watching the mourners, but the car doesn’t stop. A group of people, likely associated with Wagner Group, are attending the memorial, keeping order.

In the afternoon, a courier arrives with an enormous wreath. He adds it to the growing mound of offerings without telling anyone who had paid for it. Shortly afterwards, a young man named Dmitry brings a sledgehammer to the memorial site. This reminds the crowd of the brutal executions practiced by Wagner mercenaries.

“Prigozhin liked sledgehammers,” Dmitry says, explaining that he got this particular tool from his friends, some of them former Wagner mercenaries.

“He didn’t like sledgehammers,” objects a woman from the crowd. “It was just a symbol,” she says.

Dmitry bows to the public. A state television crew asks him to lay the sledgehammer again, for a TV segment. He lays it on the flowers again. And again.

A man and his son are arranging votive candles into cross shapes. “When it gets dark, the cross will be visible from up there,” the man says, heaving a sigh as he gestures towards the heavens.

When the memorial is already heaped high with flowers, flags, chevrons, and the sledgehammer, a young woman comes with a drawing and adds it to the mound. It’s a drawing of a cute capybara with Wagner insignia. Next to the capybara, a handwritten message is scrawled: “We’ll always remember you. Should we still believe in a better future, Pops?” The artist dries her eyes with a tissue. One of her friends, she says, also served in Wagner Group.

The former PMC Wagner building’s new occupants are watching the crowd from a distance. They work for Megastroy, a company that moved into the former PMC Wagner Center after Prigozhin’s mutiny fizzled out on June 24. “We’ve read the news,” one of them says. “We think it’s a staged death. Prigozhin must be in Hawaii now, drinking cocktails.”

The night before, the building’s 13th floor was lit, the lights forming the shape of a cross. Employees working in the building now don’t think it was intentional.

Who mourns Prigozhin and why

Many of those who came to say farewell to Prigozhin have a personal connection to Wagner Group. Some writers who worked for his “troll farm” from last November to June joined the crowd briefly but declined to talk to journalists. Some visitors sympathize with the PMC because they know someone who serves there or died as a Wagner mercenary.

I took the news really hard. The commander’s death — I don’t know if he’s really dead, they haven’t confirmed that yet, have they? We’re waiting to hear this isn’t true. We absolutely don’t want this to be true. It’s a heartache, it’s like your next-of-kin. What are we gonna without him?

The mercenary says he met Prigozhin in person: he used to visit the troops. The speaker joined the PMC long before 2022. He has a hard time believing that Prigozhin and Utkin could be dead. “They always had some moves in reserve,” he says. Besides, the paramilitary group wouldn’t let something like this just slide. Though partly under the Defense Ministry’s control, it’s a force unto itself in Africa, he argues. “Those who did it will be caught and punished very harshly.”

“Do you realize who those pilots were?” he says about the crew of Prigozhin’s executive jet. “They were the best pilots in the world — pilots who could fly without a plane!”

Prigozhin had plenty of enemies, because he always told the truth. He said everything just how it was, without embellishment or hypocrisy. Not how they do it today on TV and everywhere else — it’s all liars the world over. He was our fighting spirit. He had our back.

He doesn’t believe that Ukraine could have been interested in the crash. “There’s plenty of villains here too,” he says about Russia, “people who will do anything for $100 — sell whatever, break whatever, damage the infrastructure.” Wagnerites, on the other hand, “had ironclad discipline” and “never had any problems with civilians,” he is certain.

An entrepreneur who arranged candles into cross shapes

How could you not worship a hero? There are very few of them left in our country. Since the day he founded Wagner Group, he was a man of his word. He said he’d capture Bakhmut no matter the cost, and he did it. God only knows what he had to do when no one gave him [the ammunition] he needed, but he did everything he said he would.

“It’s a pity to lose such a huge presence — and he was a huge presence for about two years,” the speaker goes on. “Time will tell what comes next. Our people act first and think later. I’m more than certain this was no accident,” he says about the crash and those who presumably arranged it. He doesn’t think this is the end of Wagner Group, though. “Our guys went horizontal in droves when [the authorities] needed it. And they will be needed again,” he adds, referring to combat operations. “Africa is nothing,” he shrugs.

A man who says he was connected to Prigozhin ‘by way of the special operation’

These dead are Russia’s most remarkable people who had a vivid, clear position and broadcast it everywhere. This is why there’re people here with flowers, and why they’re crying. They know that the people who were really doing something for our country — who had real victories, and whom everybody loved — they have been taken away. This is why we’re here to show our support for the rest.

“We don’t really care what happens to his assets,” the speaker adds. “Everybody knows what will happen to those assets. But it would be interesting to see what becomes of Wagner Group itself.” He hopes that the PMC won’t fall apart but “keeps serving the country.”

A woman who brought a single flower

“I think of him as a hero,” says a woman with a flower, adding that the mutiny didn’t change her attitude. She thinks that the crash was a “provocation,” and that both Ukraine and the Russian opposition are responsible. The destabilizing “fifth column” is everywhere, she thinks, and trouble in the country is just beginning.

Brazilian Navy sinks the former aircraft carrier São Paulo, after several impasses

The Brazilian Navy sank in the late afternoon of Friday (3) the deactivated aircraft carrier São Paulo, which had been sailing for months in the sea after being banned from entering Brazil and abroad.

"The procedure was conducted with the necessary technical and safety competence by the Brazilian Navy, in order to avoid logistical, operational, environmental and economic losses to the Brazilian State," says the naval force, by means of a note (at the end of the news).

This Friday, the Federal Regional Court of the 5th Region (TRF-5) released the Navy to sink the aircraft carrier, rejecting a request from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), which saw serious environmental risk in the decision.

Three holes in the hull of the vessel caused the ship to fill with water, which made the sinking inevitable, according to an inspection carried out by the Brazilian Navy.

According to the document, if nothing was done, the aircraft carrier would sink uncontrollably until mid-February.

Risk of environmental damage

The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) evaluated that the sinking of the ship can cause the following environmental damage:

The release of polluting materials contained in the structure can cause disturbance in filtering capacity and difficulty of growth in aquatic organisms;

The physical impact on the ocean floor can cause the death of species and the deterioration of ecosystems;

Emission of gases (CFCs and HCFCs) used in the insulation of rooms contribute, from the corrosion of the walls, to the degradation of the ozone layer;

The carcass can attract invasive species harmful to native biodiversity;

Microplastics and heavy metals present in vessel paints can become protagonists of undesirable bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms.

Because of this, Ibama asked the Navy for information to study alternatives to reduce environmental damage. The environmental agency also wanted to map the bottom area of the ocean where the ship would be sunk.

According to the MPF, the scrap of the vessel has 9.6 tons of asbestos, a substance that has toxic and carcinogenic potential. The hull also has 644 tons of paint and other hazardous materials.

Aircraft carrier has three holes in the hull and should sink by the middle of this month, says Navy inspection

While wandering on the Brazilian coast, aircraft carriers forbidden to dock could have arrived in any port in the world, says former owner of the ship. According to Ibama, the ship did not carry toxic cargo, but hazardous materials are an "indissociable" part of its structure.

One of these materials is asbestos, a mineral fiber considered toxic. Currently banned in more than 60 countries, asbestos was used in several industrial segments.

Since 2017, a decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) has totally banned the use of asbestos in Brazil.

The Navy only took over the management of the aircraft carrier after MSK, the company that transported it between Brazil and Europe, threatened to abandon the hull in the middle of the ocean.

In the note released by the Brazilian Navy, there is confirmation that the old São Paulo aircraft carrier was shipwrecked in Águas Jurisdicionais Brasileiras (AJB), 350 kilometers from the Brazilian coast and with an approximate depth of 5,000 meters.

The document also says that the area “was selected based on studies conducted by the Navy Hydrography Center and the Almirante Paulo Moreira Sea Studies Institute”.

"The analyses considered aspects related to navigation safety and the environment, with special attention to the mitigation of impacts on public health, fishing activities and ecosystems," says the Navy's text.

According to the Navy, this place was chosen for five reasons:

Location within the area of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Brazil;

Location outside Environmental Protection Areas;

Interference-free area with documented submarine cables;

Area without interference from water works projects (e.g. wind farms);

Area with depths greater than 3,000 meters.

Experts said that the aircraft carrier could be sunk with the use of explosives. Wanted. The Navy did not detail the operation.
