You ever just see people talk about the Percy Jackson books and know somewhere, deep in your heart, that none of these people have understood that this is a series made for middle schoolers. And that fandom will very frequently lie to them like, all the time. No, that character probably isn’t ooc, you’re just thinking of what the fandom turned them into. No, this book isn’t a horrible stain next to the others before it, literally all of them were like this. It’s Percy Jackson. It’s cheesy and occasionally makes a very questionable writing decision.

HELLO i'm alive, I just barely survived 9 days in Girona doing costumes for Assumpta's short film reels.....and immediately after we came back I had to do some frantic sewing in time for the week of events planned for the Dos de Mayo. I met up with some new friends I had met at the Museo de Traje two weeks or so earlier, and my Spanish has improved SO MUCH during my time here. I am so happy and having SO much fun. I based this spencer off of one Assumpta wears in Rossini, Rossini!, and had two days to make it. I did my hair how Teresa's looks in a snood in Company, but made a madroñera instead- it's a little lower class than Teresa would've worn, I think, but it was appropriate. (I want to make all of the costumes Assumpta wears in her films and make a pre-war Teresa wardrobe, though I'll be remaking this red spencer!) Over the course of the week we walked through many parks, got to see the changing of the guard, we went to many palaces, and I got to participate in the Dos de Mayo parade and battle, which was insanely cool, and where the first two photos are taken! I also got to go to a wonderful ball and danced with all my friends, which I'll post photos of soon. Now that the events are over, I'm rereading Sharpe's Command bc I have my review in my drafts and want to revisit it.

okay azul having a dream where he like... apparently just wasn't bullied and so he never became friends with floyd and jade, never went to NRC and eventually became super successful and beloved and popular in the coral sea? is fascinating to me because based on the previous dreams where for example lilia and idia's loved ones still suffered and kalim was still causing trouble for jamil, i didn't think the spell they're under would be able to completely erase traumatic experiences like that. jade even explains that he knows azul couldn't be who he is in reality without those experiences--and that's why they're all so shocked to see that he's a star athlete in his dream, because they had just been trying to guess what the azul they know would've been dreaming about! instead they got a version of azul that makes no sense! and i guess it's because as they explain in-game, azul just has such a strong imagination that he's able to carefully construct something like this. which is also fascinating to think about in the context of so many of the other dreamers who just couldn't imagine what their lives would be without the people and experiences that have shaped them, and had dreams that weren't nearly as far from reality than this or were off in very different ways. like vil is literally a mega famous and talented professional actor, and even he couldn't imagine his life without neige around but here we have azul dreaming about his entire life and personality being the complete opposite of who he really is... and not only that but he invited a group of land dwellers to a party just so he could humiliate them for no reason?? azul ashengrotto may be an asshole and yes he may have done terrible things to try and be better than his bullies--but that's the thing, the real azul does want to be undeniably better than them, not just stoop down to their level. so it's just really unsettling to see him like this.

another thing I like about Chlonette is the fact one of them gives too much, and one of them takes too much.

Marinette gives too much of herself to other people, be it as her or Ladybug. She gives and gives and gives. It's concerning sometimes but it's kind of second nature to her.

Give. Be kind. Help.

Meanwhile, Chloe takes and takes. Takes a lot of power, takes a lot of time from her friends, takes a lot of things she can't promise. It's how she grew up, it's how she's taught to survive.

Take. Be one step ahead. Win.

But then it's them facing each other. Marinette tries giving and Chloe tries taking. But what could Marinette give to her rival? Pastries? She has money for that. Gifts? She could just order her butler. Friendship? She's...not sure but she tries.

Chloe tries to take it. She can't.

She tries again but it keeps slipping off her fingertips. She's getting frustrated, what was she doing wrong?! She was doing everything the people around her taught and did and yet she couldn't take what Marinette was giving. She couldn't keep it.

Marinette is getting agitated. Chloe isn't taking what she's giving and it feels wrong and strange. So she tries again and again, and again.

There's a boundary and suddenly they're more distant than close.

Chloe starts giving, but only to her. Only to Marinette. She starts giving what she has which she's aware isn't much. She looks down at her hands and she wished she wore her heart more on her sleeve.

And Marinette? She takes what she's given. She takes and takes. Even if it's small, even if it hurts a bit.

like for example a really common statement is "roronoa zoro has no interest in women" and that's just... straight up not true. it can come from both queer people and straight people (its one of those statements that the reasoning changes but both sides say). zoros narrative is notably feminist and he's over-invested in women to the point of coming off as dismissive, sometimes.

his interactions with nami are example A, he is overinvested in a womans ability to best him. its the reason why my friend jokingly calls his obsession with nami psychosexual. famously the arlong park scene is an example of his over-eagerness to have a woman have power over him regardless of what he thinks of that. "you couldve been a serial killer, but i'm going to attempt suicide so you can save me"... his relationship to nami parallels sanji so clearly to the point arlong park is the first time they have parallels and it's them arguing about nami.

example B is tashigi obviously, he's too over-invested in her as someone who looks like kuina and tries to distance himself from that aggressively. example C is his interactions with kiku, psychosexual obsession with women being better/besting him comes back as he deliberately pushing her buttons, like he does with nami, to get her to show off her skills.

i’ve decided that in my (super cool and much better) version of boy meets world, cory and shawn would get together in college. topanga would go to yale (as she should have) and leave cory a mess. he would have no clue what to do with himself and claim that he’s given up on dating. turns out, he likes not dating girls so much better than dating them.

it takes him a bit longer to realize he’s gay, though. i figure that he’d probably start to realize it when talking to a guy at a bar or party or something (or more realistically, his study buddy) and not realize that the guy was flirting with him because he’s a stupid little gay boy that makes me, a lesbian, homophobic. when the guy kisses him, cory either lowkey goes into shock or is like huh. interesting. and keeps kissing him.

i think either way cory would keep kissing guys as “experimentation” but eventually just be like fuck it we ball i’m gay now after accidentally ending up in a gay bar and being like yeah these are my people.

because, again, cory is a stupid little gay boy, it was take him a bit longer than that to realize he’s in love with shawn but once he figures it out he knows he’s stupid for taking that long to do so. like of course it’s shawn! shawn is the perfect best friend to fall in gay love with! he has incredible hair and a traumatic backstory!

he laments to eric and jack about this and about how stupid and lonely he is and how shawn will never love him back and eric’s like dude even i know you guys are married and cory’s like oh my god we are married! shawn and i are gay! and so cory goes up to shawn and declares, “shawn, we’re gay!”

there are two possible shawn reactions.

reaction #1: “cory what we’re not gay.” cory kisses him. “oh fuck cory we’re gay.”

reaction #2: shawn thinks cory is fucking with him and runs off and it’s really dramatic but they kiss mwah yay the end

either way they live happily ever after mwah kissy kissy i love you
