On this day, 28 July 1985, Anti-Fascist Action (AFA) was officially launched at a meeting in Conway Hall, London, attended by 250 people with representatives from Red Action, Class War, Jewish Socialists Group, Newham Monitoring Project, Workers’ Power, Searchlight and various local anti-racist bodies from across the country. Its dedication to ‘physical and ideological opposition’ to the fascism would see it drive numerous far-right groups off the streets. For example, the fascist British National Party (BNP) had been growing in confidence in Liverpool, launching violent attacks on left-wingers, including trying to burn down a bookshop run by feminist collective. Within a year the BNP had been beaten from the streets, and later admitted they "were driven underground" by anti-fascists. And in London, after the neo-Nazi record label Blood and Honour tried to organise public events in the city, they too were smashed off the streets by AFA members who took over their redirection points for shows in Marble Arch in 1989 and Waterloo in 1992. AFA mostly wound down in the mid-1990s after the BNP had been forced to change its strategy from trying to control the streets to running in local elections. 再见, 我的国王, or See You My King as the official merch has it in English (above is a poster from Tapas), is a Chinese fantasy boy's love comic series/manhua by Wen Yuan. It's available in Chinese through the Kuaikan app (not the browser store), where it updates on Saturdays, and is at episode 92 as of posting. It's also available in English on Tapas and Tappytoon, in Thai on Wecomics, in Japanese on various storefronts, in Russian, in Spanish through Monogatari Novels, and potentially in French.

Tapas summary: "When Zhang Li’s beloved stone statue crumbles before his eyes, he barely has time to mourn before being transported to the long-lost ancient civilization of Ebiz. There, he reunites with his “Rocky,” only this time, it’s not the tearful fool Zhang Li once knew, but a cold and indifferent tyrant. In this enigmatic realm filled with conspiracies and betrayal, Zhang Li seeks to uncover the true face of this “tyrant,” and melt his stone heart once more."

Tappytoon summary: "When Zhang Li left for a trip to the Ebiz ruins, he didn’t expect to bring back company, especially not a man made of stone! Though Li grows fond of the living statue, their time together doesn’t last long, as “Rocky” soon crumbles before Li’s eyes. Wishing for a miracle, Li suddenly finds himself in Ebiz far back in the past and reunites with Rocky. However, his companion is no longer a statue but rather the nation’s king, who doesn’t recognize Li at all and imprisons him! How will Li escape this predicament and get his beloved back?"

Essentially a Chinese medical student with an interest in Ancient Egypt Ebiz gets involved with a mysterious living statue, and later gets sent back to the past to be with the man the statue is seemingly based on. It's not really Egypt but it references things at times, particularly in regard to Greece and Rome's influence on Egyptian culture and modern perception of ancient Egypt. But it veers a lot more into fantasy than not, even outside the time travel and other magic.

There doesn't seem to be an uncensored version because it's manhua (though there is very obvious and sometimes humorous censoring in the comic, in both Chinese and English, usually of curse words and injuries, and the Chinese physical release heavily censors the manhua even further, while the Spanish physical release seemingly does not). It has some very dark themes and plots, though it often veers towards fluff with angst.

Physical Releases

Volumes 1-2 have also been released as a physical release in Chinese, so hopefully maybe another English language publisher will pick it up for a physical and/or ebook release (Seven Seas, Netcomics, and Yen Press have all done physical releases of comics released on Tappytoon, and a variety of publishers have done physical releases of Tapas comics), giving a hopefully better translator and editing team a shot. Volume 3 went up for pre-order on 9 November 2024.

There's also a physical release in Russian and Spanish and potentially one in French.

Spanish Translation

Volume 1 is available in Spanish from Monogatari Novels, translated by Marina López-Duarte Bandini, where it's known as Adiós, rey mío, or Bye my king.

According to Monogatari Novels' page (before it went down, anyway), it will be 5 volumes, which possibly indicates the volume length of season 1.

Thai Translation

The series is available in Thai on Wecomics and updates on Mondays. It's currently 34 episodes behind the Chinese. It's also available through Mareads, Readawrite, and Fictionlog.

Japanese Translation

The series is available in Japanese as さよならまたね、僕の王 in through b-boy, and can be found on CMOA, where it releases on Wednesdays. It's currently 50 episodes behind the Chinese. It's also available on Renta and Mecha Comic.

Russian Translation

The series is available in Russian print as До встречи, мой король.

As we are getting closer to the holiday season, I thought it might be nice to share links to cartoon merchandise I've seen floating around. I use a lot of the websites listed for gift-giving inspiration or to fill up any wishlists that friends and family ask me for. I've tried to keep most things on this list under $50, and most items are on clearance or discounted heavily.

I know items from Hot Topic and Box Lunch can be very hit or miss, so I've tried to only pull items that I have felt were high-quality in the past. Also, I would encourage you to have your items shipped to their stores and pick them up in-person if you are able / comfortable, and help us keep malls alive for a little bit longer.

Jackson Hole: Fed policy collides with reality in the most unequal county in America (CNN) Central bank officials from across the world have descended upon Jackson Hole, Wyoming this week to discuss policy decisions that will shape the economy for years to come. But as they talk about inflation and the economy in the abstract, residents of the popular vacation destination are very much feeling the realities of their policies. That’s because Jackson Hole is the most economically unequal place in the United States, according to the Economic Policy Institute. The snow kissed peaks and verdant valleys of Jackson Hole aren’t just awe-inspiring. They’re also symbolic. Among the top 1% in Teton County (where Jackson Hole is located), the average annual income is a jaw-dropping $22.5 million. The median household income in Teton County in 2021, meanwhile, was about $94,000, according to the US Census Bureau. The annual August symposium of global financial leaders and economic elites wouldn’t happen without the servers, cooks, drivers and hotel and event staff who make it function—the same people feeling the hard impact of elevated inflation, high interest rates and a softening economy the most. “If you look at income, Jackson Hole is really a microcosm of the nation’s wealth inequalities laid out across these dramatic landscapes of the Mountain West,” said Kenan Fikri, director of research at The Economic Innovation Group, a bipartisan policy organization. “It’s a ground zero for understanding how inflation affects the budgets of lower-earning households when they’re already financially stressed.”

Legal Troubles for Sarkozy (Foreign Policy) It’s been an eventful week for former world leaders facing legal problems. On Friday, magistrates in Paris ordered former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial on charges that his 2007 election campaign received a $54 million illegal contribution from former Libyan dictator Muammar al-Qaddafi’s government. The one-term president has denied wrongdoing alongside 12 other co-defendants, including three of his former cabinet ministers. He will be tried in 2025. This is far from Sarkozy’s first indictment rodeo. The 68-year-old leader has been convicted twice for corruption and influence-peddling. In May, he lost his first appeal for a 2021 accusation alleging he tried to bribe a judge. His three-year prison term was brought down to just one trip around the sun, which Sarkozy can fulfill under house arrest. He still faces a second probe into allegations that he received a payment of $3.2 million by Russian insurance firm Reso-Garantia in 2019 while he was working as a consultant.

The warning from UNICEF comes as authorities in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province are racing against time to evacuate people from areas affected by the overflowing River Sutlej. Since Aug. 1, rescuers have evacuated over 100,000 people from marooned areas in the districts of Kasur and Bahawalpur. More than six months ago, dozens of countries and international institutions at a U.N.-backed conference in Geneva pledged more than $9 billion to help Pakistan recover and rebuild from last summer’s floods. But most of the pledges were in the form of loans for projects, which are still in the planning stages.

As the relatively rare protests gained force under a government that has applied brutal tactics to keep its population in line through more than a decade of civil war, young activists crept through the streets of the southern city of Sweida at night, affixing makeshift fliers to shuttered storefronts, encouraging civil unrest. The protests began Aug. 20 at a central roundabout, with a chant of “Syria wants freedom.” A demonstrator spray-painted a message on the roundabout’s edge, giving the gathering point a new name: “Dignity Square.” The demonstrations have since spread, as have photos and videos of them, some evoking the protests that filled the country’s streets in 2011 as hopeful masses demanded the ouster of Assad. Years of conflict were to follow.

Power returns to most of Kenya after a 14-hour outage (AP) Electricity was being restored in most parts of Kenya on Saturday, 14 hours after the longest outage in recent memory, the majority government-owned power distributor said. There was still no clear explanation for the outage that hit on Friday night, shutting down the country’s main international airport, affecting major hospitals and even the president’s office compound. The outage came just weeks before Kenya’s government hosts the first Africa Climate Summit, where energy will be key on the agenda. Kenya gets almost all its energy from renewable sources, but infrastructure and alleged mismanagement remain an issue in the country of more than 50 million people.
