Val had spent most of the evening foraging through Phoebe’s pantry to fill their borrowing bag and now a sick feeling settled in their stomach as they looked at it. This was hours of hard work, days’ worth of food—and it wasn’t even a human handful. It had weighed them down just minutes ago. It weighed almost nothing. Their whole life, their struggle to survive, suddenly so insignificant.
Beneath that, there was anger too. Why would any reasonable human ever think this was worth killing over?
