“Aren’t you a little old to be trick or treating?” 

    Sam sits her basket down on the table, and stares at Nova in disbelief. 

    “How can someone be too old to trick-or-treat?” She adjusts the horns on her head, and then places her hand on her hip, shifting all her weight onto her left leg. “Is there... is there a Halloween rule book I should read?”

“This party sucks. I’d rather be out getting free candy with first-graders.”

“Oh God, I know,” Sam says, feeling unimpressed by the party going on around her and her friend. 

   “My first Halloween party, and it’s the worst I’ve ever been to.” She sits up, registering what Hannah had said. “You know, it’s not too late to actually dress up and pretend we have kids we’re getting candy for.” Of course they’d have to make up a lie of why they chose to get candy, since adults love to judge people who are taller than two feet.

“HELP I HAVE A SPLINTER” ( from ashley )

“Ash! Calm down!” Sam tries to calm Ash, because the yelling wasn’t making it any better. She knows how painful a splinter can be, but now… 

   She grabs her friend’s hand, and searches for the splinter, “Where is it?”

Josh... That’s the answer she was hoping she didn’t hear. Especially since this is her friend, it stung knowing that they both liked the same person. But the thing is that of course Sam couldn’t ever tell Nova about a crush on Josh, since that’d feel like utter betrayal to Nova-- in Sam’s mind. 

    She couldn’t just... like someone else? Chris? Maybe. Matt, even. Mike? Yeah, maybe not. She’s of course happy for Nova, as any friend would be. Even though she does like Josh, she’d have to muffle it down... silence it. It’d have to be kept even lower than it already is. Pray that it wasn’t noticeable to Josh. Especially not Nova. 

    “Oh, uh, yeah,” She makes the promise, then draws back her finger. “Josh? What makes you like Josh?”

“Okay but hear me out: Fluffy. Sharks.”

Fluffy sharks? She had never heard of something so… cute. She is very glad that she heard Nine out, because that’s the best thing she’s heard all day. 

   “You think… they sell those in stores? You think we would be able to buy one or eight?”

“This would look so cute on you!”

A smile drew across her lips as her friend told her opinion on the outfit Nova picked out. Sam had asked for Nova to come along with her shopping, so that she could have a second opinion on any outfits, and maybe change up her style. She made the right choice bringing the brunette along.

   “You think so? Are you sure it’s my color? I mean… I love it, honestly, but do you think it’d say “Fantastilicous with a touch of blinga-ding-ding”?” She laughs to punctuate her question. Normally, she’d never say “Fantastilicous” or “bling-a-ding-ding”, but in this instance, she will.

Sober, she’d feel so surprised and... somewhat embarrassed that Josh knew. But drunk? It felt so wonderful to not have it weighing on her. 

She smiles at him, and says, “See I... I knew I wasn’t a good hider. BUT, I’m a good seeker. So if you’re ever up for a game... you’ll lose.” What is she saying?

“Josh I…” Uninvited, she immediately hugs him, needing comfort 

    She tries to stop her tears for a quick second, in order to explain why she’s in distress. “Josh it’s Ashley. We were down in the sewers… trying to just find a way. And they just– she got– Josh it was this Wendigo, and it all happened so fucking fast, I just…” she trails off. “I just wish I could’ve done something.” 

    Truly, she doesn’t understand how she, Emily, and Chris managed to even escape. Even if Ashley had initially had thought of going down into the sewer, Sam knew it was all her fault for even deciding to leave the safe room. She’ll never forgive herself for not being there for her friend.
