There Will Come Soft Rains
Tumblr media
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pool singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;
Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.
By Sara Teasdale (1920)

Dead Internet Theory is becoming more Relevant
Today, I find myself lost in contemplation as I ponder the enigmatic abyss that is Tumblr—a sprawling digital landscape where voices echo into the void, their resonance obscured by the cacophony of inane ramblings and curated content.
It's a disconcerting realization, one that casts a shadow of suspicion over the very fabric of the platform. Are certain individuals artificially elevated to mass popularity, their voices amplified by unseen forces behind the scenes? Are the legions of rebloggers mere figments of imagination, their digital footprints nothing more than ghostly echoes in the void?
The thought that the majority of Tumblr's population may be comprised of AI chatbots masquerading as human users is a chilling one, casting doubt upon the authenticity of every interaction and connection forged within its digital confines. Are we truly engaging with other human beings, or are we merely shouting into the void, our words lost amidst the sea of algorithmic noise?
And yet, amidst the uncertainty and suspicion, there remains a glimmer of hope—a belief in the power of genuine connection and authentic expression to transcend the artificial constructs that govern our online interactions. For every voice lost in the void, there are countless others that resonate with truth and authenticity, forging bonds of solidarity and understanding in the face of digital disillusionment.
As I navigate the labyrinthine corridors of Tumblr, I am reminded of the importance of discernment and critical thinking in the digital age. It is only by questioning the narratives that surround us, by challenging the status quo, that we can hope to discern the truth amidst the noise.
And so, I vow to tread cautiously, to navigate the digital landscape with eyes wide open and skepticism intact. For in the shadow of uncertainty lies the potential for enlightenment, the opportunity to reclaim agency in a world increasingly governed by algorithms and artificial constructs.
As I close the virtual door on another day in the digital wilderness, I am filled with a renewed sense of resolve—to seek truth, to forge genuine connections, and to confront the void with courage and conviction. For in the darkness, there is always the promise of light, if only we dare to seek it.

I understand that tall men are our POV characters, but surely being like a foot taller than everyone around them would have some occasional consequences

Back in 2017 I signed up for one of the Cards Against Humanity sillies and did their Cards Against Humanity Saves America. Basically they were like fuck Tr*mp and his border wall and used the funds from the campaign to buy land and to make all 150,000 contributors part owners of said land across the US/Mexico border.
It was fun and silly and I got a little certificate.
Today I got an email that Elon Musk illegally annexed that land for SpaceX and that CAH are suing him over it. So possibly I’ll get like $100 if they manage to win a lawsuit and stick it to Musk. It’s like even more bang for my original buck.

My grandfather and my godfather (a beloved neighbor and dear family friend) had a long standing bet- for one dollar- about who would die first. Both of them being slightly pessimistic (in the funny way), they both insisted that they themselves would be the first to die. Any time my grandfather had a health scare, he’d gleefully call up my godfather to boast that he’d be passing “any day now” and he was sure to win the bet. It was a big family joke and they were always amiably sparring and comparing notes about who was in worse shape, medically speaking.
When my grandfather was in hospice care dying of liver cancer, my godfather was quite ill also. It took him great effort to make the journey to see his dying friend. As he came into the room, supported by a family member, he shuffled to my grandpa’s bedside and silently handed him a dollar bill. He was ceding his loss of the bet, as they both knew who was going first. My grandpa had been in quite bad shape for a while and was no longer able to speak but let me tell you he snatched that dollar with unexpected strength and literally laughed aloud. He knew exactly what the gesture meant and he couldn’t help but find the humor within the grief. It was the last time any of us heard my grandpa laugh, as he passed shortly after.
When I talk about my appreciation for “dark humor” I’m not so much thinking about edgy jokes, but rather the human instinct to somehow, impossibly, both find and appreciate the absurdity that is so often folded into the profound grief of life and death. When I tell this story I think it kind of perturbs people sometimes, but it’s honestly one of my favorite memories about two men I really deeply admired. I could never hope for anything more than for my loved ones to remember me laughing until the very end, and taking joy in a little joke as one of my final acts.

south africa was banned in the olympics in 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988 & 1992. a total of 8 times. for 28 years they didn't set foot in the olympics. you know why? apartheid. apparently the olympics disagreed with the apartheid regime in south africa. russia & belarus aren't allowed to take part in the olympics this year. you know why? because of their involvement in the war in ukraine. several countries throughout history haven't been allowed to participate in the olympics because of various reason from their involvement in war to human rights abuses. now if the olympics aren't blind to all that... why in the world are they blind to what israel has been doing to gaza for the past 10 months? why is a genocidal apartheid nation allowed to participate in the olympics when any other country in its place would've been banned?
