Xialing is having a corporate reunion dinner with all the Ten Rings headquarters members who don’t have families to have reunion dinner with (it turns out the Ten Rings, like the Masters of the Mystic Arts, has a certain self-selecting demographic), but Madisynn cancels a dubious-sounding double date with Troy, her maybe-boyfriend, and Winner, her ex who wants to reconnect, because “Wongers, I’d kill a person for your mom and I haven’t even met her”.
Tina, as Master of the Sanctum in which said dinner is taking place, gets an automatic invitation, as does America, who is on a trainee rotation to the New York Sanctum and is also unofficially Wong’s most gifted disciple. Rintrah is obliged to come, as Wong’s mother is already making vegetarian ngoh hiang and lotus leaf glutinous rice for his benefit.
Sam sounds oddly touched when Wong calls him to ask (also to cancel their Saturday dim sum appointment on account of Wong having to bring his parents to see the High Line on Aunty Geok Bee’s recommendation), and when he says he can come Wong informs him that Barnes is welcome as his plus one.
This comfortably makes a table of ten, except on the day of the dinner Wong answers the door of the New York Sanctum at four in the afternoon to find Mordo standing there with a bag of rice, assorted groceries, and a six-pack of Wong’s father’s favourite beer.
“Last minute shopping list from your mother,” says Mordo, by way of explanation. “She added me on WhatsApp the last time I visited.”
Wong stares at Mordo, who looks visibly uncomfortable. It is, after all, the first time he will be setting foot in a Sanctum Sanctorum since he’d left the order.
“Stop trying to usurp my position as the favourite child,” Wong finally grouches, and pushes open the door.
“That’s definitely your sister,” says Mordo, and follows Wong inside.
“All of my children are my favourite —” Wong’s mother declares later, over the contained chaos of the kitchen. Wong’s father, in the meantime, has ensconced himself in a corner where he is painstakingly cutting and arranging fruit in individual bowls.
“Thanks, Ma,” says Wong.
“— but Mei wouldn’t have forgotten to buy rice while we were at Hong Kong Supermarket,” Wong’s mother finishes, while jerking her chin towards the rice cooker. “Cook the rice! No time already!”
By the time everyone has arrived, the large round table Tina had managed to locate is heaving with food, which they all have to hold on for while America helps Wong’s mother take a video to send to her friends, including the infamous Aunty Miao.

“Okay Doctor Stephen,” Wong’s mother says, breaking the silence, “you get changed and come down to eat.”
“Is that something we need to be worried about?” asks Sam.
“I think that’s the kind of something we don’t ask about, Cap,” Barnes says, around a mouthful of yam and pork belly.
Strange, in the meantime, has caught sight of Mordo where he’s seated next to Wong’s father, and is eyeing him with equal parts suspicion and disbelief.
“Mordo,” says Strange.
“Strange,” says Mordo. “I’ve promised not to try to kill you today.”
“Choy,” says Wong’s mother, heaping fried meatballs onto Mordo’s bowl. “Don’t kill here kill there.”

大家好! ML had a craving for ban mian (board noodles) so she, SC, MI and I went back to the stall selling it. I ordered fish soup you mian (thin board noodles); what else can I say but YUM? Thick, tender fish slices, perfectly poached egg, sweet and crunchy wong bak (Napa cabbage) and highly slurpable noodles, what's not to like? I was so full, I only wanted veggies for dinner. All this goodness for $5.50. Our hawkers are amazing, especially during this inflationary period. This meal was so delicious that I sent the pic to CY (she introduced it to me) and she straight up went there for dinner.

Ahh good ol' yong tau foo, 1 of my main staples when I crave lots of vegetables. ML was on leave, so SC, MI and I headed to the stall which sells standard yong tau foo. This time, I chose green beans wrapped in tau kee (tofu skin), brinjal, bittergourd, carrot, golden mushrooms, Chinese mushroom, broccoli, cuttlefish and an egg. The green beans wrapped in tau kee were new and they were delicious! I also paired this with rice instead of noodles. Oh yes, in previous posts, I forgot to mention that some people like to dip their veggies and protein in chilli or sweet sauce. I prefer to eat mine plain so as to taste them better.

JK, CY, SC, ML and I were attending a talk. We ate lunch at a very famous and popular hawker centre near the event venue, which is always crowded during lunch break. ML, JK, CY and I made a beeline for the stall selling Japanese rice and noodle bowls. Customers can choose from salmon, unagi, chicken and beef for our protein, rice or soba and soya sauce, black pepper or mentaiko sauce. I chose salmon, soba and black pepper sauce. This stall does salmon SO well. The fish was moist and tender and that onsen egg was perfect. Everything, from the soba, seaweed, radish, edamame, kimchi and furikake blended together nicely to create an explosion of flavours. It was delicious!

So we had a tea break in between the 4-hour talk. There was a buffet but I wasn't keen on the fried bee hoon (thin rice vermicelli), chicken wings and dessert. I was also still full from lunch, so I ate a mini Hawaiian pizza about half the size of my palm, ngoh hiang (meat roll with chopped water chestnuts), breaded scallop and coffee. Didn't go back for seconds because I felt stuffed at this point. The talk ended 2 hours later and when I got home at close to 7pm, I was still not hungry. Dinner was light - congee, vegetables and tau kwa (firm tofu) - and after watching some videos, it was time for bed.

I haven't stepped into a fastfood chain for over 13 months now but it isn't to say I don't eat pizza or fried chicken at all. Occasionally I do, but that doesn't trigger binge like what some people think. Our tastebuds adapt to what we regularly consume over time; nowadays, I find moderately healthy meals more delicious and they're better for my body. I feel less lethargic after eating balanced meals of fresh vegetables, high quality protein and noodles or rice. And because I feel better, my mental and emotional wellbeing is just fine. What's not to like about this lifestyle? 下次见!

We are back to support the Vegetarian Rice stall at Sun Plaza and coming back home with these two packs of dinner. Not sure what the dish on the left in the first picture is but should be some form of mock meat with gravy. Then there are also curry vegetables (mainly cabbage) and preserved Chinese mustard (梅干菜). For the next pack, we have curry mock meat with mock roasted chicken made of bean curd skins and the same preserved vegetable as the former.

Sis also bought some Ngoh Hiang (五香虾饼) which is not vegetarian by the way. Sorry, but I have no idea what the individual items are called so we will just refer to them as prawn rolls and sausages. :D These came with chilli sauce (not shown) so you dip and eat.
